It’s October and autumn has officially arrived. The good news is that beautiful North Wales is at it’s best in these cooler months, with the region taking on a golden hue as the trees transition into their bright new shades. Long country walks come into their own at this time of year, with families turning their back on the beach in order to kick leaves and collect acorns. In the east of the region you will find walks in little known wooded side valleys, along the River Dee and over open hills and mountains – all of which show off North Wales at its autumnal best…

WHICH WITCH IS WHICH?

As Halloween looms, Lowri Llewelyn talks to Efa Lois – and discovers that North Wales has got quite a bewitching history…

Witches have had a tough old time throughout history, with torture, hanging and being burned at the stake all hazards of the job. Between 1482 and 1782, 40-50,000 people across Europe were accused of witchcraft and murdered – though ‘luckily’, only five witches were ever executed in Wales. In her project Gwrachod Cymru (Welsh Witches), Efa Lois documents witches from across the nation. “Welsh folklore has always been a part of my art; even in primary school, I was portraying figures from Welsh mythology,” she explains. “The legends and women of Welsh history are still an integral part of my artwork. In more recent years I’ve focused on less familiar aspects of Welsh folklore – such as witches. “For some years I’ve been collecting books about Welsh mythology and old articles in order to compile some sort of archive of Welsh witches. What is interesting about these ‘witches’ is that some feel more mythical than others, and it is likely that most myths are inspired by real women.”

BETWEEN 1482 AND 1782, 40-50,000 PEOPLE ACROSS EUROPE WERE ACCUSED OF WITCHCRAFT AND MURDERED – THOUGH ‘LUCKILY’, ONLY FIVE WITCHES WERE EVER EXECUTED IN WALES

So far the fruits of her labour have produced two prints – Welsh Witches, and Welsh Witches II – which document 60 witches in all. In 2019 and 2020 she shared an image of a witch along with her legend on Instagram every day throughout the month of October.

were able to cast out unclean spirits and demons by holding ceremonies, anticipating a need or want in the ebb and flow of the sea.” Meanwhile, just outside the Eryri national park: “Local legend has it that there is a large oak tree at the crossroads between Conwy and Betws-y-Coed near Llanrwst. There was a witch called Beti the Baten who lived in the tree. She would hear all the things that people would say about her as they walked past. One day she heard that someone was going to burn the tree, with her in it, so she fled the area.” Then there’s Sara’r Gadwen, a witch from Rhoslan. “Legend has it, she had the ability to predict the future by using the chain that hung above her fireplace. She also had the ability to create medicine from herbs, read the stars and communicate with ghosts.” But Sara wasn’t Rhoslan’s only mysterious resident. “The people of Llanfrothen were afraid of Mallt the witch. Legend has it that she was from Rhoslan, near Criccieth, but no one from Rhoslan had heard of her. Legend has it that Mallt would get her clothes and food from the people of Llanfrothen free of charge, as they feared her.” A love of animals appears to be a theme among Welsh witches. “The people of Beddgelert were fearful of Beti Ifan. A local poacher created problems for her, as he was not afraid of her. To avenge the poacher, Beti turned herself into a duck, sneaking behind him when he was poaching and quacking loudly. Beti always ensured she was a little beyond his reach so that he was unable to shoot her!” Meanwhile, there’s Siwsi Dôl y Clochydd from Llanfachtraeth. According to myth, at one time there were many deer in the area, whom the lord of Nannau enjoyed hunting. But, however close he got to the animals, he could never capture them near the River Glas; when the dogs were upon them, the deer would leap over the river and out of sight. Eventually, the lord decided Siwsi was responsible, and that she was herself morphing into the form of a doe and evading hunters in order to protect the rest of the herd. A bridge was built over the river and named ‘The Bridge of the Doe’s Leap’. When asked whether there will be a Welsh Witches III, Efa is tight-lipped, insisting: “We’ll see!” n Limited edition prints of Efa’s work are available at her Etsy shop Rhithganfyddiad. Be sure to follow her on Twitter and Instagram @efalois

Game changer Robert H. Griffiths’ family have been supporting Wrexham AFC for nigh on 100 years. As the club enters an exciting new era, he looks back on its fascinating history…

The glory years for Wrexham Association Football Club – founded in 1864, the third oldest professional football club in the world – have until very recently appeared to have gone forever, never to return. The halcyon days of exciting excursions into European cup competitions playing the likes of F.C. Porto, A.S. Roma, and even Manchester United lie in the past, remembered only by ‘those of a certain age’. Then there were the great F.A. Cup runs of yesteryear, the stand-out result being the thirdround beating 2-1 of the mighty Arsenal at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham, on 4th January 1992. Arsenal the previous season had easily won the old First Division. Wrexham stunned the football world with goals from Mochdre born Mickey Thomas, and Wrexham born Steve Watkin, in front of a crowd of 13,343. Whenever ‘giant killing’ F.A Cup victories are shown this Wrexham one is very much to the fore. The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham (In Welsh: Y Cae Ras) is the oldest football stadium in the world still hosting international football matches, and is officially recognised as such by Guinness World Records. But sadly, gone are the days of ‘competitive matches’ taking place at the Racecourse against the likes of England, Scotland, Denmark,

But to Rob and Ryan the heritage aspect has great appeal. Under their co-ownership for this season of 2021/22 Wrexham have a new manager in Phil Parkinson, who has successfully managed at a higher level, plus the marquee signings of Paul Mullin and Aaron Hayden. In Paul Mullin they have signed a genuine goal scorer who netted 32 goals last season for League Two runners-up Cambridge United. Mullin’s total is a record for League Two, and he was voted Player of the Season for League Two. The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways half term services include the ‘Woodland Wanderer’ experience

f l a h r e tt e b e Th Take a once in a lifetime adventure on the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Due to our fabulous Welsh weather, October half term can been a tough time of year to entertain the kids. But fear not, because there are actually far more options available than you might think… Having been locked up for more months than we care to count, many parents had no choice but to turn a blind eye on their kids screen time. So now that the world is beginning to open up it makes sense to get the family out and about as much as possible. The good news is that a visit to North Wales during the autumn is a truly delightful experience with the beautiful morning mists, the vibrant colours of the forests in fall and the local culinary delights! The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways run through Snowdonia National Park with its stunning mix of mountains, lakes, forests and coastline. Departures are from Porthmadog and Caernarfon stations and half term services include the family favourite ‘Woodland Wanderer’ experience, where passengers enjoy a journey in Victorian style carriages to Tan-y-Bwlch Station, where they can enjoy a delicious lunch

This is a great service for kids (and dogs!) as it is not too long

Snowdon Mountain Railway is also on track to keep you entertained this half term. Often described as one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world, Snowdon Mountain Railway trains depart from Llanberis Station and begin their climb up Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa, a journey experienced by some 12 million travellers since 1896. What to do

Visit Conwy Castle No visit to Conwy is complete without a tour of the town’s famous castle. This magnificent medieval fortress is exceptionally well preserved – in fact it contains the most intact set of medieval royal apartments in Wales. The high curtain wall and eight lofty towers rise almost as impressively as when they were built more than 700 years ago. Get Pampered Escape to the beach and relax with a luxurious treatment at Aberconwy Spa. Whether you’re looking for a couple’s massage, a friends spa day or just some time away from the daily grind, Aberconwy Spa provides the perfect beachside retreat just minutes from the centre of Conwy. www.darwinescapes.co.uk Climb Conwy Mountain A walk up (and back down!) Conwy Mountain takes about three hours and, while it is a rather strenuous excursion, the views from the top are nothing less than superb. A leaflet describing the walk and information about the mountain’s history, geology and wildlife is available to order from Conwy County Borough Council. Visit the country’s smallest house The Smallest House in Great Britain can be found nestled amongst a terrace of houses on Conwy’s quayside. You really can’t miss the smallest house and you’d be crazy not to pop in for a look on your way past. This national treasure measures just 72 inches wide by 122 inches high, and it was occupied right up until May 1900. Walk the town walls Conwy’s town walls are a medieval defensive structure which were constructed between 1283 and 1287 after the foundation of Conwy by Edward I, and were designed to form an integrated system of defence alongside Conwy Castle. Stretching almost uninterrupted around the town, they run for three quarters of a mile, with 21 towers and three original gateways along their length. Visit a distillery If you fancy a bit of a tipple after all that walking, then it’s worth visiting the Penderyn Whisky Distillery in Llandudno. Penderyn recently opened its North Wales distillery, and the shop is now open for business seven days a week. Tours are available daily and can be booked via Penderyn’s website, along with whiskey masterclasses. www.penderyn.wales

A drive down memory lane

As Stephen Gregory embarks on a nighttime drive he has plenty of time to dream about the rich history of Bangor…

Three o clock in the morning. A perfectly empty road. A huge full moon is rising above the horizon. I’m not usually out and driving in the middle of the night. I’m grumpy at first, because I’d been fast asleep in bed – and then my phone had woken me, buzzing and fizzing on my bedside table, and my son was wondering if I might come and pick him up? Not grumpy for long. It’s three o’clock on a Sunday morning, and I’m utterly alone on the highway, high above Felinheli and

d r a o b All a How a local group of volunteers brought Prestatyn Railway Station back to life…

A whopping 22 million rail passengers travel along the North Wales line each year, so it comes as no surprise to hear that the Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station regard their local station as the town’s shop window. This active group reformed in 2013 following an extensive refurbishment at the railway station. A lift and disabled access had been introduced which, while a much needed amenity, transformed a once pretty station into something of a concrete and steel eyesore. The group started small by installing tiered planters on the main platform and six 6ft planters in the High Street. Then they slowly extended their operation to include the station embankment and the disused platform. “We are an official Transport for Wales Station Adopters Group and a Network Rail Community Group,” explains Councillor Gareth Sandilands. “We have also won a number of prizes over the years, including the Tidy Towns Best Kept Manned Station in Wales for two consecutive years, the top award (Level 5 – Outstanding) in the Wales in Bloom It’s Your Neighbourhood Competition for the past three years, and an award from Prestatyn Town Council.” The group are keen to promote Prestatyn as a destination for walkers. With this aim in mind, and with the support of the Prestatyn Business Forum and the Prestatyn Walking Festival, they have erected a large sign on the disused platform welcoming visitors to the official ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town. This year a wooden sculpture of a walker designed by

The work that has taken place at the station – from the wonderful displays of thousands of daffodils, crocus, tulips and bluebells on the embankment in the spring, to the magnificent well-stocked planters and raised beds and two small gardens at the station entrances, the main platform and disused platform – are much appreciated by Prestatyn’s visitors and residents alike. “Prestatyn Station is a blooming marvellous station for customers to visit and passengers to see on their travels along the North Wales coast line,” commented community rail manager Melanie Lawton. “I’m extremely privileged to work with the award winning station adoption group, and proud that they are part of our railway family in North Wales. There is always a warm welcome, lively conversation and a job to do! A credit to Transport for Wales.” The group meet twice a week throughout the summer months to water the planters, and they can be found on Sunday mornings throughout the year litter picking at the station and surrounding area. “Twice a week during the summer months you will find me down at the station at 6pm with other members of the team watering and tending the planters at the station,” says Sherry Edwards, who is a volunteer and the secretary of Friends of Prestayn Railway Station. “Sometimes, at the end of a busy afternoon, I would prefer to sit in the garden with a glass of wine, but once down at the station and working alongside people who have become my friends my initial reluctance is forgotten. And the reward – seeing the flowers perk up and dance in the breeze, and the usual lovely remarks from people passing by who appreciate our efforts – makes it all worthwhile.” n Many thanks to Tony Griffiths for supplying the images The Friends of Prestatyn Railway Station is a lively, friendly group who welcomes new volunteers to join them. OF THE

Month Fall From The Tree

As the temperature drops so do the apples, so what better cocktail to embrace autumn than the ‘Fall From The Tree’? Just like food, cocktails can be tweaked to include seasonal ingredients, and this drink literally tastes of autumn thanks to its blend of aromatic spices. This warming tipple is best enjoyed after a brisk walk through a golden woodland, kicking up fallen leaves in order to work up a suitable thirst…

Of course, if you’d rather sit back and relax while somebody mixed your ideal cocktail for you, then why not visit Sheldon’s in Colwyn Bay? From a Margarita to a Mojito, it has quite the cocktail selection and is quickly becoming the place to go for cocktails in North Wales. 01492 339821 www.sheldonsbar.co.uk

Penblwydd Hapus i Ni Hello all, Happy birthday to us, we are five. All those years ago Tim knew he had a great concept, that people would love and enjoy and would open up their ability to confidently explore new wines, comfortably. He knew that he could guide people on a journey, helping to push their boundaries, expand their knowledge, enjoyment and understanding of wine. The most important part for me though is knowing we are able to help our customers (friends) understand what they do and don’t like about wines, which massively helps you explore and understand more about your taste and the wines that you may enjoy. However knowing that is all well and good, but on that first day, when the door is unlocked, the sign flipped to open, and the wait for customers begins, there is a lot of time for the doubts to creep in. Totally unfounded doubts though, as here we are five years

EDUCATION NEWS Awards recognition for Rydal Penrhos pupil Fayeth Jones, who is a Year 11 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, was chosen as one of two Welsh ambassadors for the Right to Food Federation this summer. As part of her role, she was appointed as a panellist at the Valley Fest Festival, which took place from 29th July until 1st August. Fayeth (pictured) was advocating for the rights of young people and children across the country to have access to affordable, healthy food. This has become a more concerning aspect of life across the country over the last 19 months, with the COVID-19 pandemic thrusting even more disadvantaged families into poverty. Almost 10,000 people attended the festival and Fayeth got the chance to many people about the Right to Food Federation’s work, taking questions from those in attendance and conducting herself in exemplary fashion. Her efforts at the festival and raising awareness regarding the topic were recognised with a prestigious award. Fayeth was presented with the Guild of Food Writers distinction, which was down to her investigative food work that is produced as part of her on-going podcasts. Fayeth managed to beat out big guns such as The Guardian to the award – which is a testament to her tireless commitment within a field she is extremely passionate about. www.rydalpenrhos.com

WGU achieves rapid rise in The Guardian’s University Guide league table rankings Staff and students at Wrexham Glyndŵr University are celebrating the university’s climb of more than 40 places up The Guardian University Guide league table. The national newspaper has just published its annual University Guide for 2022 which sees Wrexham Glyndŵr rise an incredible 41 places, from 107th overall in the UK last year, to 66th this year. Glyndŵr scored highly for satisfaction with teaching and feedback, achieving an overall score of 65.3. In compiling the Guide, universities are measured across nine categories ranging from good teaching to job prospects for students. This year the Guide has added the 2020 and 2021 survey results together to reflect the universities pandemic response and their performance in a normal year. The huge rise in The Guardian’s rankings tops what has been a fantastic summer for Wrexham Glyndŵr which saw the University ranked highest in the UK for Adult Nursing for overall student satisfaction in this year’s National Student Survey (NSS). The University was also successful in gaining a Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) tender to launch an exciting raft of new Nursing and Allied Health Practitioner courses. The hill fort continued to be used long after the Iron Age ended. Legend has it that it was used by Owain Gwynedd, the self-proclaimed King of Wales, while King Henry II was camped on the nearby Berwyn Mountains and it is also believed to be the site where Owain Glyndwr gathered together his troops after he proclaimed himself King of Wales in 1400. Today all is peaceful here and after a stiff climb to the upper reaches of the fort you will no doubt settle down to enjoy your lunch surrounded by history and magnificent views.

New history app launches The clocks are to go back a little earlier for the launch of a new history app. The first of its kind in North Wales, a free history app, called Imagine Trail, will shed light on some of the Bay of Colwyn and Mochdre’s old tales and bring them to life through augmented reality (AR) technology. The app has been created as part of Imagine Colwyn Bay, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund with support from Conwy County Borough Council and the Bay of Colwyn Town Council. Local arts charity TAPE Community Music & Film and tech experts Reality Boffins worked closely with local creatives, heritage groups and the wider community to develop it. Animated videos, old footage and photos, sound recordings and interviews have been used to recall stories of note from monks in the Middle Ages through to the mod rallies of the 70s and 80s. “The app is a real treasure trove of stories,” said TAPE’s Neil Dunsire. “We’ve been fortunate to unearth some terrific tales and memories from Dinosaur World to Medieval ambushes. It has been brilliant to work with 20 local creatives, who have adapted and overcome challenges brought about by the pandemic. In all, we’ve worked with 300 people, from school children to local historians to create the 52 pieces of video, sound, and animation included in the app, which will be free to download. We’re hugely grateful to everyone who has taken part and are very much looking forward to being able to share the Imagine Trail.” tapemusicandfilm.co.uk

While everyone remembers Russell Grant from his Breakfast TV appearances in the 1980’s, most people don’t realise that Russell was the first astrologer in over 300 years to present a horoscope forecast to a member of the Royal Family (HRH Queen Mother). Now dubbed the “Royal Astrologer” Russell has appeared on numerous television shows, including Strictly Come Dancing. He divides his time between London and his North Wales home near Portmeirion. www.russellgrant.com
