SO YOU’VE JUST GOT ENGAGED – CONGRATULATIONS! UNDERSTANDABLY YOU’RE ON CLOUD NINE AND NOBODY CAN WIPE THE HUGE SMILE OFF YOUR FACE RIGHT NOW. BUT WHAT NEXT? PLANNING A WEDDING IS A HUGE DEAL – JUST WHERE DO YOU START? First things first, have you both decided whether you want a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony? The difference being, a civil ceremony is being married in the eyes of the law and the religious ceremony is being married in the eyes of the faith you follow. Your faith will also determine what ceremony you will have if you’re planning a same sex marriage, as some faiths will not allow a religious ceremony, meaning that you will need to book a civil ceremony. For couples who are having a religious ceremony, you will also need to check with the church you’re planning to marry at whether you need to book a local registrar. If this is the case, make sure you book both at the same time to avoid a change of date or time further down the line, which could be costly especially if you’ve sent out save the dates or your invites. Once you’ve made your decision on the type of ceremony you wish to go for, you can then choose your venue.

If you’re having a religious ceremony, you’ll need to look at the logistics between the church and the wedding reception venue. How long does it take to drive between the two and what is the maximum capacity for each, so you know how many guests to invite? And, if you’re having a civil ceremony and wedding reception both at the same venue, then you’ll also need to check what is the maximum number of people you can invite. You will also need to ensure that it has a suitable area for immediately after the ceremony where can your guests relax if the room needs to be turned around for your wedding breakfast. There are plenty of other questions to ask when it comes to choosing your wedding venue but, to start with, make sure you visit a variety of venues so you have enough information to compare different places and options. n

The Quay Hotel and Spa We have just returned from Bride: the wedding show at Tatton Park, where our wedding team have had an intensive two days chatting to brides and grooms about their needs and wants for the “big day”. While there, the team were delighted to discover what it is that makes The Quay Hotel and Spa stand out from the crowd. Firstly, of course, the Quay has breath-taking views of the Conwy estuary, the mountains, the marina and Conwy Castle. Yet there is no venue charge: just a per head fee which generously includes everything, from food and drink to chair covers and bows. The cake pop The chocolate cake Let’s face it, fruitcake isn’t for everybody. But, if you want a large cake to cut while doing without the raisins, then a good old chocolate cake could be the answer! There are a huge amount of chocolate options out there, from bespoke masterpieces to a simple bake-it-yourself cake. Just make sure that you don’t get any down your dress…

If you want to personalise your cake with your wedding colours, but don’t want to bother with the ceremony (or mess) of cake cutting then cake pops could be the answer! A cute cross between a cake and a lollipop, cake pops lend a modern edge to your big day. But, if you don’t want to go the whole hog, then why not have a traditional multi-tier wedding cake for the adults and a selection of cake pops just for the children? Or, if you are having a sponge cake, then perhaps just add a few gluten-free cake pops so that everyone is catered for?

The cheesecake Combining your cake with your dessert course is a great money saving tip, and a trick that is ideal if you prefer puddings over fruitcake. Sleep tight BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE WITH YOUR CHOSEN VENUE, MAKE SURE YOU’VE ASKED ABOUT ACCOMMODATION FOR YOU, YOUR WEDDING PARTY AND GUESTS. Some wedding venues will allow you exclusive use where you take all the rooms for your wedding, in which case you need to know how many rooms there are and be confident you can fill them, as you will be covering the cost. If your wedding venue doesn’t have enough rooms to sleep your immediate wedding party, you need to find out the nearest accommodation for them and the logistics of the night before and the night of the wedding. It might be best to confirm the rooms at your venue and rooms at nearby accommodation providers for your wedding party, before you announce the date and location. For all other guests you need to be mindful of where they’re travelling from. Are the majority travelling a distance where they’ll need to stay over the night or even two nights? If so, it would be best to include a couple of suggestions for your guests to stay along with the wedding invite, so they can arrange their own accommodation.

For a large majority of venues there will always be neighbouring hotels, B&B or self-catering options available however, for those areas where you literally are in the middle of nowhere, you may also wish to consider organising a mini bus or coach for your guests. This can either be covered and organised through yourself or what would be better is asking one of your bridal party to organise this with guests, as you will have enough to organise and pay for on the day itself. And don’t forget you will always have some guests who are happy to drive no matter where you hold your wedding, so they may even be able to offer lifts for some other guests too! The main things you need to ensure is that you’re in love with your venue, your immediate wedding party can be catered for and there’s either enough accommodation in the locality or transport has been arranged to help your guests get to and from the wedding. n

Whether that be through the colour scheme or a specific theme, your ‘save the dates’ and invites are a little taster of what the guests can expect. Many people now opt for digital invites in order to be as sustainable as possible, but there are many of alternative eco options available too.

The flowers Nothing quite says “it’s a wedding” as well as decedent floral displays. But, before you get carried away, ask a couple of florists for a basic price list as this will help you budget for your flowers. Most people do not know how much flowers will cost for a big event like a wedding, and the cost can vary dramatically depending on your chosen blooms – not to mention the sheer volume of them. Also go and meet a few florists to see which ones you get on with as you’ll be working closely with them in the run up to your big day!

The rings For centuries wedding rings have been used to symbolise commitment, devotion and loyalty to a loved one. Yes, your big day is important, but remember that you will both be wearing your wedding bands for the rest of your lives – so it is vital to choose carefully and prioritise accordingly. Do your research and find out which wedding bands are most likely to stand the test of time – in terms of both durability and fashion.

The dress Choosing THE dress is, perhaps after the venue, the biggest wedding decision that you will make. It has to suit your personality as much as your figure, and so it’s not surprising that finding the perfect wedding dress is quite a daunting prospect. The good news is that bridal boutiques have seen it all before, and are on hand to make the experience as positive as possible – if only all shops offered a glass of Prosecco while you were browsing! Allow plenty of time for both your shopping experience and the alteration process – and make sure that you have a suitable place to hide it once you bring it home!

The mother of the bride The wedding of a son or daughter is a very special occasion, so Mum needs almost as much VIP treatment as the bride! But did you know that it’s etiquette for the mother of the bride to be given first choice of colour for her outfit? Boutique experts recommend a colour that compliments (but does not match) the bridesmaids’ dresses – otherwise Mum may fade into the background of photographs. It’s a good idea for both mothers to put their heads together, as creating that fabulous, timeless, wedding photograph requires a good balance of colours...

The cake Your wedding cake is the centrepiece of your day. Once your guests have had a good look at your gorgeous dress, the next big moment is to check out the cake. However a wedding cake doesn’t have to be a traditional three-tiered affair – anything from chocolate to cheese is perfectly acceptable nowadays. Again, just like your dress, make sure that you choose a cake that suits your personality more than anything – although it doesn’t hurt to have as many tasting sessions as possible!

A good photographer is a vital component to your day. After all, you will be looking at these photos for years to come. To choose the right one, look at the websites of five or six local photographers and ask yourself which style you like best. Can you imagine yourself in those photos? When you have a shortlist, arrange to meet them and ensure that they make you feel comfortable – and make you smile! Your photographers will be with you from early in the morning until after your first dance – so it’s important that you get on.

The wedding planner People might assume that a wedding planner is bit of an extravagance, but they do more than meets the eye. Many wedding planners can assist in setting you off on the right track if you’ve just got engaged, and they can find specific suppliers and even come up with overall themes and ideas. They also provide event management on the day ensuring that all of your plans fall seamlessly into place – without you having to worry about a thing. Your makeup It’s time for your close up! Or around 500 of them to be precise, so choose the right makeup artist to ensure that you look your absolute best. Take your time and do some research on what style of makeup you want, be it dramatic glam or a soft, vintage look. We all have our own styles so it’s important to choose an artist who is right for you and, again, make sure that you get on well – having your makeup done is a pretty personal experience, so you want to be looking at a friendly face! Also remember that your makeup is something that needs to last all day and, not only must it look good in person, but also in your photos…

The music We best not forget the music. A wedding just isn’t a wedding without a bit of Dad dancing after all! As a result many couples are in a dilemma about whether to book a band or a DJ for their evening entertainment. So, consider your venue. You don’t want to be squeezing a ten-piece band onto a small stage or a solo singer in the middle of a field. Do your research too, and make sure that your venue doesn’t have a noise restriction, and check on any noise curfews. Also ensure that you have a collection of songs, about 25-50, which mean something to you both – or you could ask your guests to request a song along with the wedding invitation to make for a truly memorable night!

The insurance OK, so this might not be a very glamorous topic, but wedding insurance is vital if you’re having a big do. The two main reasons people buy wedding insurance are venue cancellation and supplier failure. Have you considered what would happen if your venue closed overnight or a supplier lets you down? In addition, what would happen if you had to cancel the wedding due to key people in your wedding party becoming ill or they were involved in an accident? If you do decide to purchase wedding insurance do this at the start, as some policies allow cover for up to two years before the wedding. Just make sure that you have written confirmation of everything you book, as you may need these later if you have to make a claim.

In order to ensure that nobody’s feelings are hurt, it’s best to have a strict rule when it comes to children. In reality, you have four options: • Welcome children with open arms • Have an “adults only” wedding • Include immediate family only • Hire a childcare service to provide entertainment

When looking for your ideal venue there is a vital question that you need to ask yourselves: How many people are you looking to invite to your ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception? You may think this is jumping ahead slightly if you’ve just got engaged, but the answer to this question will help you narrow down your venue search. If you’re looking at a church ceremony, what is the maximum capacity the church can hold and does this fit with your guest list? This will then give you an idea of numbers for the venue you’re hosting the wedding breakfast. If you’re having a civil ceremony what is the maximum number, you can have? Does the venue have separate rooms for the ceremony and wedding breakfast or, if everything is taking place in the same room, what will be the turnaround time and where can you and your guests go while the room is transformed?

The accommodation Some wedding venues will allow you exclusive use where you take all the rooms for your wedding, in which case you need to know how many rooms there are, and be confident you can fill them, as you will be covering the cost. If your venue doesn’t have enough rooms to sleep your immediate wedding party, you need to find out the nearest accommodation for them and the logistics of the night before and the night of the wedding. It might be best to confirm the rooms at your venue and rooms at nearby accommodation providers for your wedding party, before you announce the date and location. For all other guests you need to be mindful of where they’re travelling from. Are the majority travelling a distance where they’ll need to stay over the night or even two nights? If so, it would be best to include a couple of accommodation suggestions for your guests along with the wedding invite, so that they can arrange their own room.

The schedule The biggest tip for any bride-to-be is to put together a detailed schedule, as this will help immensely on the day itself! With a schedule in place you can then ask someone close to you, who you trust, to take over ‘on the day coordination’ or you can work with a professional wedding planner who will take care of every detail for you. A detailed schedule covers every element of the day from the minute you wake up, to the minute you go to sleep. Include every tiny bit of detail you can think of on it, so someone else other than you or your partner can use it to ensure your day runs as perfectly as you had hoped for.

The ceremony A big decision that you both need to agree on is whether you would like a civil or a religious ceremony. The difference being, a civil ceremony is being married in the eyes of the law and the religious ceremony is being married in the eyes of the faith you follow. Your faith will also determine what ceremony you will have if you’re planning a same sex marriage, as some faiths will not allow a religious ceremony, so you will need to book a civil ceremony. For couples who are having a religious ceremony it is worth noting that you might need to book a local registrar, but check with the church you’re planning to marry at first. If this is the case, make sure you book both the church and the registrar at the same time to avoid a change of date or time further down the line, which could be costly – especially if you’ve sent out save the dates or your invites. 22 EXQUISITE WEDDINGS 2020

As a result, a North Wales wedding venue was their dream and they discovered Talhenbont months before the completion of the extensive Coach House renovation project. “It was wonderful to see their day come together,” continued Alicia. “The bridesmaids looked gorgeous in winter green and the groomsmen handsome in their tuxedos. When the bride walked downstairs in her bespoke Suzanne Neville gown, we all gasped. Fay looked absolutely stunning. Her shoes were also something special!” The Wedding Ceremony took place at Talhenbont’s beautiful Grade II Listed Coach House, which had been expertly dressed by the awardwinning florists, Springbank Flowers. The festive theme was subtle and stunning. The centre pieces were wooden trees made by Fay’s mother which were adorned with personalised glass baubles, to be taken away by guests as favours. The high ceilings allowed for incredible tall display frames of eucalyptus, pine and white roses and there were candles everywhere. It was a special moment when the bride and groom made their way back down the aisle. “The party kicked off with a champagne reception in the main hall followed by a stylish, vintage high tea in the Coach House. Cheeky Chilli, our award-winning event caterers, served up a delightful array of sweet and savoury tiers to all the guests,” continued Alicia. “The party then moved back to the hall where the guests made use of our bar and settled around the roaring fire and the 9ft Christmas tree in hall. We loved being a part of such a fantastic, festive, fun wedding and were so pleased that the couple chose Talhenbont for their big day.” And Fay and Rob themselves were equally pleased to have tied the knot at Talhenbont Hall. “As soon as we saw Talhenbont Hall and met with Alicia and Paul we knew we wanted to get married here,” explains Fay. “We can honestly say it was one of the best days of our lives. We’ve also got photo wall, so there’s no need to book a photo booth and a lovely candy cart that you can fill with your favourite sweeties. And the daftest thing of all... a doughnut wall! Planning the perfect ‘hen weekend’ with unique activities and universal appeal, can often be a challenge, but it need not be an insurmountable task with the inclusion of a PuzzleDuck digital treasure hunt either as the backdrop to or at the forefront of your experience. Our interactive digital treasure hunts are designed for those who want an alternative to traditional ‘hen weekend’ activities. Of course, there’ll still be spectacular selfies to take and memorable moments to experience. But you’ll also have the opportunity to learn more about your chosen city, seek out hidden locations, solve perplexing puzzles and answer trivia challenges in our “mobile pub quiz” feature. Each player will access our innovative digital treasure hunt app via their phone - so everybody has the opportunity to participate and contribute. You’ll still be able to stop off at amazing, sophisticated bars and eateries if you wish (and sometimes the hidden clues can be placed here!), but historical points of interest, art galleries, architectural gems and magnificent monuments can also play their part in your weekend. Our hunts can be run competitively, as either a fast-paced energetic sprint or you can take things at your own speed and soak up the atmosphere of the city.
