INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

Brian Lillie is the Director of Hospitality Operations and Distribution at Chateau Chantal. From the start, his passion for promoting and sharing wine with others has been unstoppable.

Brian came into the industry at the time that wine in Michigan was becoming more than just a tourist attraction. He says, “Over time, I worked with winemakers and visited wine regions all over the globe. I’ve tasted with professionals from novice to Master. In every case, one thing remains the same — an inherent camaraderie in everyone that possesses the passion for wine.”

Sharing his passion, Brian teaches series of wine tasting classes through NMC Extended Education and always enjoys the inevitable “aha” moments. “When the student connects what I’m saying with their experience it makes it worth the journey,” he shares.

For those with an interest in wine, Brian’s advice is simple. He suggests, “Taste all kinds of wine. You don’t need to like everything, but if you limit yourself to only one variety you are doing yourself a disservice. There is SO MUCH wine out there.” Cheers!

Anyone can meditate anywhere at any timethat includes your greatest moments of stress. Meditation does not require comfy pillows in a temperature controlled room with soft lighting and singing bowls (though that is rather magical and we will do that once in class). Side Flow Yoga for All Levels

Connecting yoga poses in a flowing sequence is called vinyasa. Learning the basics of foundation in our Beginning or Beginning & Beyond classes is best before doing a flowing type of yoga, which requires good health and strength. Side flows compliment sun flows with the majority of poses moving laterally, thus minimizing upper body weight bearing positions. Side flows are great for strengthening legs, opening hips and shoulders, and increasing stability and stamina.

The First Amendment: Free Speech and Religion

The First Amendment is the hottest area of law right now. Many of the most contro versial decisions being handed down by the Supreme Court are being brought under some provision of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.....” But what do those words mean, exactly? Where does the free speech of one person or group conflict with the sensibilities or protections of another? What about “hate speech?” Antiwar protests?? When does the “free exercise” of one’s religious beliefs effectively constitute the “establishment” of a religion? Debates and controversy rage on issues that touch our deeply held religious and/or phil osophical beliefs, such as abortion, war, sexual orientation, vaccinations, whether to preserve certain memorials, etc. This class will discuss the scope of these First Amendment “freedoms” and some of the key U.S. Supreme Court decisions on these issues. We will not try to solve these controversies but you will leave with a much better understanding of the backdrop and ratio nale for the cases interpreting this part of the Constitution. You will read the news about new cases being handed down by the Court with much keener insight. There will be some reading materials and be prepared for lively class discussions!

Poetry Out Loud NEW!

Many poems are meant to be experienced out loud, whether performed or listened to, and not merely remain silently on the page. Using your favorite poem(s) or ones the instructor will provide, we’ll explore the bodily presence of a poem, as Robert Pinsky said — its rhythm and sounds, its characters and drama, and its language and imagery. Your selection may be as familiar as Poe’s “The Raven” (Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary), as rousing as King Henry’s Saint Crispian’s speech (We few, we happy few! We band of brothers!), or as stirring as Tennyson’s “Ulysses” (I am a part of all that I have met). We will lend to the rhyme of the poet/the beauty of thy voice (Longfellow) and physically experience the meaning of sound and the feeling of rhythm as we both perform and listen to poetry. No previous experience or memorization necessary, just sheer enjoyment!

This experience may well inspire students to write essays or stories for publication or even book-length works. At minimum, it will help participants better compre hend the role of place in their lives.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

From an early age, Kirk Waterstripe has been an avid birder and outdoors enthusiast. Love of his backyard bird feeder first sparked his interest. At 10 years old, his mom signed him up for Birding for Beginners and he was hooked.

Kirk shares his passion through teaching several popular birding classes each Spring through Extended Education, covering topics such as bird identification and migration patterns. He loves watching students have their “aha” moments, while also asking questions and showing their enjoyment.

A particularly fond memory of Kirk’s comes from leading bird walks in Leelanau County in the 1990s. “Every so often, this kid of 10 or 11 would come along. He’s still birding, chasing rare birds all over the state. He’s gotten darn good at it too! And he still remembers seeing a rather rare shorebird on one of our walks,” he shares.

Kirk encourages everyone to get outdoors. He says, “Birders are the nicest people! Give birding a try. At least spend some quiet, slow time outside.”

Implicit Bias Training (3 SCECH) (LARA Compliant)

Considering the fact that our human brains make upwards of 35,000 decisions everyday, it’s no wonder that we rely on decision making shortcuts. We make over 120 informed decisions each day, guided alone by the unconscious mind. To save time (and effort) our brains use bias to create these shortcuts. Bias is one of our largest tools that enables us to thrive in a complex society. These biases can be good, bad, and neutral - but all of them can impact our lives in significant ways. Join Brett Sinclair, interculturalist with a background in psychology and marketing, to learn how to recognize some of the common implicit biases that often lead to negative reactions and outcomes. Explore the effects this has on our society and connect it back to your own experiences and place of work. Review case studies that will strengthen your ability to act for the best outcomes; with clarity, consciousness, and intentional decision making. This 2-hour livestream class meets LARA requirements for Implicit Bias Certified Courses.
