It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the Washington Aviation Association’s 37th Annual Northwest Aviation Conference & Trade Show in Puyallup, WA. “Fly Safer,” is the theme of this year’s conference. Pilots and aircraft owners can enjoy two days filled with safety and educational seminars, visit the conference exhibitors and enjoy some personal renewal time away from busy schedules. “Aim Higher” is the theme for this year’s NW Aviation Career Forum. This unique event provides a venue for students, mechanics, pilots, industry professionals to network oneon-one with businesses, airlines and colleges. The big change in 2020 is the Career Forum has been moved from Friday to Saturday. Not only will this shift allow students and others working Monday to Friday the ability to explore all the forum has been offering for the last eight years – they will be able to experience this in the palpable energy and enthusiasm that is the hallmark of the annual Conference!

2020 SPEAKERS Rachel Hansen, Event Coordinator Washington Aviation Association(WAA)
The one thing all our speakers have in common is they are passionate about aviation and graciously share their stories and knowledge with other aviators and aircraft owners. Other than that, there are no rules. When I first took on this established event nineteen years ago there was only one speaker area– the second floor of the Pavilion Hall. The goal was to pack the schedule with one stream of interesting, and sometimes very expensive, aviation greats. When we moved to the newly built Showplex Exhibit Hall – everything changed. Suddenly we had five rooms equipped with high tech audio visual as well as the keynote area seating over 1000 – the sky was the limit. We were able to accommodate historical presentations, provide space for group annual meetings, host product demonstrations and even began offering an on site FAA approved IA Renewal course for aviation mechanics that had the added effect of bringing in more aircraft parts companies hoping to connect with the new influx of mechanics attending the event. Some of the product demonstrations have become standards over the year – like Wayne McGhee’s annual Saturday morning Gar-
min update or Seattle Avionics’s educational workshops. SPA president, Steve McCaughey’s seaplane centric sessions are popular and also presenting new and current information on float flying. The Aviation Safety Institute’s annual sessions are also always on point. We are very grateful to the many speakers who take the time each year to volunteer to include the Northwest Aviation Conference in their annual agenda: thank you Johnny Summers, Bruce Williams and Gary Reeves – your educational spirit is engaging, appreciated, and integral to the success of this event!

One of our well received and reliable speakers we count on each year is MIKE ADAMS, Senior Vice President of Underwriting with Avemco. Mike is an instrument-rated pilot, a Northwest native and the former President of the Oregon Pilots Association. Mike holds a property and casualty insurance license in all 50 states. His more than 37 years of combined experience of general aviation and the aviation insurance industry helps pilots to understand why many of Avemco’s coverages and underwriting decisions are designed to help keep you safe. Mike will be presenting his new seminar entitled “Traits of a Superior Pilot” at 3:30 PM Saturday in the Pioneer Room.

An award-winning author, TOM HAINES, Senior Vice President, Media and Outreach at AOPA was named editor in chief of AOPA Pilot in 1994. Under his leadership, AOPA has expanded its media properties to include Flight Training magazine and a host of electronic media. He is the co-anchor of the weekly video magazine AOPA Live This Week. His staff also manages AOPA’s presence at regional fly-ins and air shows. Haines holds an MBA and a BA in Journalism. He is a 3,500-hour Commercial pilot with multiengine, instrument, and seaplane ratings, and holds type ratings in Eclipse 500 and Cessna CJ business jets and a second-incommand type rating in the North American B-25. He owns a Beech A36 Bonanza. Haines will be speaking at 1:00 Saturday on General Aviation in the New Decade.
Prior to joining ASI, Alicia worked as a flight instructor, air tour pilot, and also towed banners in Citabrias. Originally from Los Angeles, Alicia received a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Science from Rocky Mountain College. She enjoys reading, hiking, music, baseball, and all types of adventure. Alicia is an active pilot and aspires to learn aerobatics and own her first airplane. Alicia will be speaking both days in the Keynote Area on behalf of the Air Safety Institute.

He served with the US Air Force Special Operations Command working the AC-130 Gunship, and has spent the majority of his flying time in tailwheel, seaplanes, aerobatic aircraft, and warbirds. Steve was instrumental in creating a Seaplane Rating Scholarship program, working with organizations to save seaplane access and has created an app for SPA members listing seaplane landing areas, flight schools, and destinations.
Author and flight instructor AMY HOOVER has been flying commercially and teaching backcountry flying for more than 25 years. She has over 7,000 hours of flight time, more than 2/3 of it in the Idaho backcountry, and is an original co-founder of the Mountain/Canyon Flying School in McCall, Idaho. Hoover is the primary author of the 2019 book Mountain, Canyon, and Backcountry Flying, and has given more than 100 presentations in various forums throughout the U.S. She holds a Ph.D. in Education and is a Professor of Aviation at Central Washington University.

He has had a successful career as a civil, military, and commercial pilot. His being hijacked to Cuba in 1980, while as a Second Officer on a Delta Airlines flight, changed his life. who have often encouraged him to write a book about the experience. Now retired, Art lives with his wife near Paine Field in Everett, Washington, where he has began his flying in 1967. He is a Volunteer Ambassador at the Boeing Future of Flight Aviation Center, and he writes articles about aviation for it’s volunteer Newsletter. Art will be sharing his exciting story both days at the Conference. JEFFREY LUSTICK, owner of Tomahawk Aero Services will be speaking on aircraft sales Saturday. Lustick is a graduate of Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, and has practiced aviation law for 20 years. Jeff’s seminar is designed to provide helpful information and pro-tips to first-time airplane buyers seeking to find their dream airplanes. He will cover what to look for when shopping for an airplane, from what airplane models are the most desirable to purchase and own, to how to evaluate engines, airframes, and avionics. He will also cover the best process for reaching a fair purchase price, and how to negotiate with brokers and private sellers. Finally, he will discuss the legal paperwork, such as sales contracts, escrow options, etc., and cover the FAA forms needed to safely buy your new airplane. He will answer questions and hand out printed sample forms during the seminar.
As always, we are pleased to hold a place Saturday morning for WAYNE MCGHEE. Wayne is the Northwest Regional Sales Manager for Garmin International. An instrument rated private pilot, he has nearly three decades of experience working for avionics manufacturers like IIMorrow Inc, UPS Aviation Technologies, and Garmin. Wayne was also involved in the first widespread test of ADSB technology in Alaska known as the Capstone project. While working with Garmin, Wayne has conduct ADSB themed seminars educating fellow pilots on how the system works.
For the last couple years PHILIP MANDEL has been traveling up from his home in Oregon to teach the AOPA Rusty Pilot’s workshop. This year we are pleased to welcome back him as a new regular on the Keynote schedule. When Philip Mandel was young, he had no idea flying could be affordable for someone with an average income or possible for someone with an IQ under 200 – that was until he met a private pilot, just a “regular guy” with an average job, who flew for fun and owned a beautiful Mooney M20. The very next day, Phil drove to his local flight school and signed up for lessons. The bug bit so deeply that sometimes he went for two or even three flight lessons per day! That was back in 1981. He earned his Private Pilot certificate followed by an Instrument rating, Commercial Pilot certificate, CFI, CFI-I, MEI, and more recently AGI and IGI certificates and ratings. Through the years he has owned airplanes ranging from a C-150 to a Piper Apache and is currently the proud owner of his tenth flying machine, a Thorp T-18 (Experimental). Now a “recovering engineer,” Phil is an independent flight instructor based at Starks Twin Oaks Airpark (7S3) near Hillsboro OR. Philip will be presenting both days at the 2020 Northwest Aviation Conference.

Johnny Summers
Annual show planning with JOHNNY SUMMERS usually starts with – “use me whereever you need me, Rachel.” And that’s the kind of ardent aviation supporter Johnny is. An excellent educator, inspiring and always smiling – he is an important element of what makes someone continue this job after 19 years! Johnny is a professional pilot with over 13,000 hours. He is an FAA DPE, airline pilot, academic, and consultant. He administers tests for ASEL Private, Instrument, Commercial, military competency, foreign pilot conversion, Canadian conversion, CFI, and CFII certificates. Johnny started flying as a US Army helicopter pilot. He transferred to the USAF and flew KC-135s. He piloted the US Air Force Academy’s Wings of Blue competition parachute team and was an instructor pilot at the Academy’s Flight Screening Program. Johnny spent three years as an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at Texas Christian University where he was recognized for his teaching skills. Johnny has been a Regional Director of Flight Operations, Regional Director of Training, Chief Flight Instructor, Chief Pilot, and FAR §141 Commercial Chief Instructor. In 1997, Johnny was recognized as the FAA National Aviation Safety Counselor of the Year. In 2012 Johnny received the Washington Aviation Association’s Spirit of Aviation Award. Currently Johnny is flying 737s for Alaska Airlines. Academically, he is an Assistant Professor for ERAU with a Ph.D. in Business Administration. His graduate and post graduate studies focused on aviation and airport management, airport construction, and finance. Johnny and his family make their home in Buckley, Washington, USA. Johnny will be speaking Saturday at the Conference and is once again offering his services to present at the Career Forum. GARY REEVES is a well known national speaker and expert in Single Pilot IFR and GPS use. He teaches individuals and trains whole airline staffs how to use the new Avidyne and Garmin

During his career at Microsoft, he worked on six versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator. In the 1980s, he edited the Western Flyer (now the General Aviation News). He has authored two books on using PC-based simulation to complement flight training, plus many features on a variety of topics for aviationfocused periodicals. Bruce will once again speak both days at the NW Aviation Conference and we thank him for his support.

The company was incorporated in 1977. In 1981, Joe Finelli joined the organization, bringing 20 years of experience in printing and publishing with him. Publishing and manufacturing has since become the principle company mission.
In 1984, the sale of the ground school (Aviation Training and Research, Inc.) and the retail store (The Aviator’s Store) allowed all efforts to be directed towards becoming a major supplier of pilot supplies and educational material in the United States. In 1985 Mike Lorden joined ASA as Marketing Director. That year, ASA moved to larger quarters in Georgetown, and again to its present Newcastle location in 1990 to provide more warehouse and office space. Jackie Spanitz joined the operation in 1993 and is currently ASA General Manager. ASA remains a family-owned business, overseen by Mike Lorden, President.

Along with airlines, businesses, colleges and government agencies, this event represents the cumulative efforts from all aspects of the industry. “As an aviation non-profit, we are concerned about our industry’s future,” said Jamelle Garcia, Executive Director of the Washington Aviation Association, “hosting this event is an opportunity for new aviators and experienced aviators, and provides resources to those who need to get to the next level.”
“There are alarming aviation workforce shortages,” Garcia continues, “we all need to be proactive in helping the new generation find paths to a career in aviation.” The presentations, divided into interest tracks, are led by panels of aviation operators and educators including airline, coast guard, WSP, float pilots, colleges faculty, training facilities and airports. In 2019, the event brought together over 600 attendees from all over the nation. Attendance is not limited to students. Another year brings more opportunity for aviation maintenance students from colleges around the Northwest Region to showcase their skills as they compete at the NW Regional Aviation Maintenance Competition. In keeping with WAA’s continued efforts of aviation related education and awareness, this year’s competition is bound to entertain and educate the general public, while providing a challenging series of maintenance related events. The event enters it’s fifth year and is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. The 2020 competition features eight teams from around the Pacific Northwest, two more than last year’s competition. Aviation Maintenance Technology Schools (AMTS) fielding teams this year have undertaken rigorous internal vetting processes in the months leading up to the competition to select their most skilled students to represent their school in this annual competition. The schools participating in the 2020 competition include Big Bend Community College, WA; Clover Park Technical College, WA; Everett Community College, WA; North Idaho College, ID; South Seattle College, WA; Spokane Community College, WA; Idaho State University, ID, and Trinity Aviation Academy, WA. The number of competitive events has grown in 2020 as well. Competitive teams will show case their aviation knowledge as they perform eleven competitive events
during this one day competition. Last year’s competition featured eight different skills events. Each event is designed to test typical aircraft mechanic skills and knowledge that an AMTS student encounters during their training experience. Aviation industry members in the audience will be watching closely in hopes of recruiting future aircraft mechanics for their company. Not only has the event grown is size and scope, but sponsors have stepped up their game too in terms of awards. Thanks to the generosity of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, the first place winner of the 2020 competition will compete at the national Aerospace Maintenance Competition, part of the Aviation Week Network’s MRO Americas conference, held April in Dallas Texas. The Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air sponsorship pays air travel and hotel costs for a 6-person competition team. 2222

What do Atlantic Turtles, Pacific Whales and Pilots have in Common? A NATIONWIDE EFFORT TO SAVE SEA CREATURES’ LIVES Each fall in the Northeast, sea turtle conservation gains a unique partner: the general aviation community. Private pilots volunteer to help transport sick turtles to rehabilitation hospitals along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Recently Turtles Fly Too expanded that reach to the Northwest with organizing rescue flights for NOAA and SR3 whale entanglement teams. The Idaho based non-profit Turtles Fly Too is the inspiration of True-Lock Aviation Fasteners developer, Leslie Weinstein. If you had difficulty connecting whales, turtles and pilots – add wheel fasterner inventor to the mix! But it works. With an ability to find creative solutions to difficult problems, Leslie can bring the right people together for a common cause. Whether it be wheel fasteners, sea turtles or pinnipeds – he enjoys making big things happen! As water temperatures drop in the fall, sea turtles must migrate south into warmer waters. Otherwise they risk becoming “coldstunned,” a condition similar to hypothermia in people. Cold-stunned sea turtles strand on frigid beaches in the Northeast and will die if not rescued and brought to a rehabilitation facility.
There are an average of 750 cold-stunned sea turtles found in the Northeast every year between November and January. This quickly overwhelms local rehabilitation facilities, and turtles must be transported to other facilities to continue their care. NOAA Fisheries identifies permitted rehabilitation facilities that can care for these turtles and coordinates their transport to these hospitals. Transports can be stressful for turtles, especially those in poor health. Anything that can be done to minimize transport time reduces that stress and increases the chances of successful rehabilitation. Transports to southern Florida could take 24 hours by ground! That can take a toll on a sick sea turtle, so flying is preferred.
To address this issue, a partnership was born in 2014, during the largest coldstunned sea turtle stranding season on record. More than 1,200 cold-stunned sea turtles stranded in Massachusetts alone, and local rehab facilities quickly filled. When Weinstein first heard about the endangered sea turtles in needing “rides,” he starting reaching out to aircraft owners, his True-Lock customers. Leslie contacted NOAA Fisheries to offer assistance in enlisting pilots to volunteer their planes and their time to transport turtles. He created the non-profit organization called Turtles Fly Too, which initially only involved a small number of pilots. Now there are more than 150 “Turtle Fliers.” Each fall they answer the call to assist NOAA in transporting hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles. Leslie’s efforts have grown to a nationwide network of pilots and sponsors to also assist in rescues of stranded or entangled whales. Leslie coordinates with NOAA and SR3 to find rides for gear and biologists quickly.

Team members are first or second year AMT students currently enrolled to earn their FAA Airframe and Powerplant mechanic licenses. With this certification they will be authorized to maintain, repair, service, and inspect fixed-wing and rotary– wing aircraft. These students represent future aircraft mechanics, whose profession demands a high degree of skill, knowledge,
and integrity to provide safe and reliable aircraft, at any hour of every day, support a variety of air operations, such as business, recreation, cargo, fire fighting, air ambulance, ust to name a few. Instructors and students from several AMT colleges will be on hand to demonstrate and coach anyone who wants to get involved in a variety of fun and interesting aircraft maintenance activities, such as: weighing an aircraft, rigging a flight control system, designing and testing a simple electrical circuit, securing a bolt with lock wire, and more.

Welcome future Aviators and Aviatrixes to the NW Aviation Conference’s interactive Flight Zone Activity Area. This year we are proud to announce that the Seattle World Cruiser Association and its volunteers will staff and provide many hands on educational activities to learn about aviation. This year we celebrate the upcoming re-creation of the first World Flight with the Seattle II departing Sand Point, Washington April 6, 2020. The Pacific Northwest is known around the world for its rich aeronautical history and as the birth place of the aviation industry. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) recognizes this at the Seattle Museum of Flight with a special Historic Aerospace Site plaque that was forged in Scotland for The Red Barn. The Red Barn is officially the first home of The Boeing Company, founded in 1916. The Boeing Company acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1996 to form the largest integrated aerospace company in the world. The 1924 world flight of the Douglas World Cruisers was a cornerstone in the Pacific Northwest’s aviation history by accomplishing this First circumnavigation of
the world. These flights took off from Sand Point, Washington, and ended in Seattle. Douglas Aircraft Company built four World Cruisers each named after a U.S. City. They were #1 The Seattle, #2 The Chicago, #3 The Boston, and #4 The New Orleans. You can learn more about this incredible history at Our Flight Zone, and enjoy other hands on interactive activities. Melincko’s Museum Hi Everybody! It’s me, Melincko, the famously adventurous aviation monkey. I have exciting news to share with you, and I hope you take it seriously even though I’m just a monkey. Somehow I always happen to be at the right place, at the right time. I have many stories that involve historic airplanes, flights and aviators you see attending the Northwest Aviation Trade Conference! First of all I should probably tell you where my home is. I live in a1930 gas station that is painted up in the Gilmore Gas Station colors in the City of Wallowa, Oregon. Gilmore Gas station? Back in the 20s and 30s was the golden age of Air Racing. Many colorful pilots filled the sky. One aviator, Roscoe Turner, personified this era the best. His waxed mustache, sharp blue military jacket, riding breeches pressed into tall black boots, and diamond studded aviator wings made him a larger than life character. He also flew with a real lion!
The lion was Roscoe’s flying companion.
Gilmore flew over 25,000 miles and participated in two transcontinental races. Gilmore the flying lion even had a parachute and oxygen mask made special for him by the Irvine Parachute Company (1930). The humane society and the rest of the public were concerned with Gilmore’s safety in case Roscoe had a malfunction
with the airplane. Huge public outcry resulted in these modern safety features for Gilmore. His parachute was activated by a static line so he could safely exit the aircraft if he had to. Gilmore the Lion became the mascot for Gilmore Gas and Oil. The brilliantly painted gas stations were done in high gloss yellow, white, and red trim. The reason that I live in an old 1930s Gilmore Gas station is because it has been converted into a model airplane museum that even has a stuffed giant lion just like Gilmore with his parachute deployed. This incredible model airplane museum was put together so that students of all ages could learn about aviation in a fun and eclectic way. As you will see when you visit, the first learning lesson in this airplane hangar of mine is the history of Roscoe Turner and Gilmore the Flying Lion! Inside you will also learn about Josef Kotula. He was one of the most prolific aviation artists from 1931 until 1987. He did many of the covers for Model Airplane News, Popular Mechanics, and also did the “Box Art” for Aurora Flying Models. Many of his best covers, since I have one of the most complete collections in the world, and his early “Box Art” can be found on display, along with his rich history and induction into American Society of Aviation Artists. I should probably let you know that I am part of the Seattle World Cruiser Association and I am the first team member to take the First flight in the Seattle II down 44
Boeing’s 10,000 foot airstrip. I will be flying as part of the flight team on this incredible adventure that begins April 6, 2020 departing out of Sand point, Washington. The real flight in 1924, the first circumnavigation of the globe, actually took stuffed monkeys as mascots. My great, great grandmother, Maggie, was on that flight and now lives at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. I am the April 6, 2020 mascot that has the privilege of flying around the world with the Dempsters and our official flight crew. What other famous flights have I made with many of the pilots you see right here at the trade conference? Well, I was fortunate enough to fly with Addison Pemberton in the Beautiful Boeing 40C from Historic Pearson Field to Boeing Field. This Boeing Model 40 was brought back to its former glory by Pemberton and Sons Aviation in Spokane, Washington. This Boeing Model 40 is the oldest flying Boeing airplane in existence, and can be found in the incredible Golden Age of Aviation Collection at The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum in Hood River, Oregon (WAAAM). WAAAM is one of the many exhibitors at this Conference too. I have a really big poster of this Boeing 40C hanging in my museum that you must see with a giant monkey holding a wind sock next to it! Captain Mac and Roni, who fly their historic 1929 Travel Aire 4000, and give biplane rides all over America, also flew
historic model airplanes in suspension, some as small as a moth, like our Wright Flyer, some yet as giant as the ten foot wingspan Douglas World Cruiser (New Orleans #4) that was here at the trade show last year, makes the Scavenger Hunt a real challenge. alongside the Boeing 40C for this trip. We flew the old C.A.M. (Contract Air mail) Route 8 from 1200-1400 AGL, and you can see this adventure at my aviation museum. Captain Mac’s amazing story about barnstorming and the Great American Flying Circus can be found in Richard Bach’s book: Nothing By Chance, A Gypsy Pilot’s Adventure in Modern America. Richard also wrote; Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I also had a fun time flying with the pilots that built and flew the replica of the historic Miss Veedol, also known as The Spirit of Wenatchee. Miss Veedol flew nonstop across the Pacific Ocean on October 5, 1931 with Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon. They crash landed their airplane safely in East Wenatchee, Washington. When I flew in the Miss Veedol we flew out of Wallowa County at Joseph Airport, OR. There are many exciting aviation developments taking place inthe Pacific Northwest besides my aviation museum. Joseph Char-
ter School in Joseph, OR, just built a new facility dedicated to teaching students how to prepare for careers in the aviation industry. Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho is building the Schweitzer Career & Technical Education Center (CTE). Hillcrest Aircraft Company became the first corporate partner to donate $100,000. It will house many of the technologies like CNC machining, and engineering& electronics technology. Getting back to Melincko’s Museum in the City of Wallowa,` you will also learn about the famous Marine and Air National Guard “Happy Hooligan” Aviator, James “Fang” Maroney. Fang was one of four pilots flying F-16s providing protection over Washington D.C. for the first thirty days after 9/11. His 80 inch wingspan North American P-51D Mustang can be found inverted over our aero modeling area. Fang was a lifelong member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Fang and his father built this huge Mustang with retractable landing gear, flaps, and opening canopy. Building flying models, gliders, learning about drones, experiencing the Vertical Wind Tunnel, flying the radio controlled flight simulator, or just basking in the rich history of the famous Aviatrixes and leaders of aviation like Katharine Wright, Harriett Quimby, Bessie Coleman, Jackie Cochran, Helen Dutreau, and Mary Riddell, are just a few reasons to come and learn. Dozens of beautifully scaled model aircraft move by themselves creating a giant aircraft mobile while you visit. This aviation museum is an exciting place to learn about aviation in a fun way. What I find really neat too are the informative Talking Towers built by Touchstone Enterprises LLC that you can find all around my museum. They inform and instruct using my fun monkey voice. These push button Talking Towers are a great way to get precise information delivered to our visitors especially since the wing walking monkeys can distract even the most focused docents. My favorite exhibit is The World Flight Wall that tells the amazing rich history on the flight I will be going on this April 6, 2020. The history of the Douglas World Cruisers is one of the greatest adventures ever to take place, and the largest peacetime logistical effort of the United States Government until the landing on the moon. A very special thank you to my monkey friend, PJ Mueller, at Seattle Museum of Flight who made these incredible reader boards for my exhibit. Seattle Museum of Flight, without a doubt, is one of the greatest aviation education museums in the world, and they were so very kind to even help out this little monkey. So come out to visit me in Beautiful Wallowa County. My Melincko Museum is just the place for you. You will find me on The Oregon Hells Canyon Scenic Highway 82 in the City of Wallowa, and you cannot miss the brightly colored historic building, and of course my funny little monkey face and a P-40 Flying Tiger War Hawk on the big lit sign. The Greater Seattle Chapter of The Ninety-Nines provides camaraderie, networking opportunities, activities, and educational opportunities for women pilots. The chapter is a diverse group of women pilots including private pilots, sport pilots, student pilots, and commercial pilots- airline, corporate, and even test pilots!
