T’S all over! The people have spoken! But what have they said? In the midst of Storm Ciara Irish voters delivered an electoral bombshell which has baffled most analysts. The winds of change have struck. For so many years Ireland’s two main political parties, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael – which each trace their roots to Irish nationalist divisions in the 1920s – regularly polled over 80% of the votes between them in most elections. This changed, to an extent, in 2016 with smaller parties and independents gaining ground. But last week, the big two polled just 44% between them in a historic, ground-breaking election which saw Sinn Fein top the poll and could have seen them scoop 40% of the seats had they sufficient candidates in the race. The count resulted in the election of well over 40 new TDs and before it was over an unprecedented number of big names (and, in some cases, talented politicians) were toppling in a surge towards Sinn Fein and, to a lesser extent, smaller left-wing parties and independents. In the North-west, these included names like Lisa Chambers, Eamon Scanlon and Pat The Cope Gallagher. The resounding success of Rose ConwayWalsh, who almost topped the poll with over 14,000 first preferences, was the story of the election in Mayo while in Sligo-Leitrim Martin Kenny left the others well behind. The outcome has resulted in a political scenario where there are now three main parties – Fianna Fail (22.2%), Fine Gael (20.9%), Sinn Fein (24.5%) and a plethora of smaller parties and independents. Undoubtedly, the electorate voted for change on a massive scale, but the result creates many problems. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar broke new ground when he opted for Saturday voting – a positive move which made life easier for the younger voter. Continued on Page 6

Need for infrastructure in the NW - IBEC Whatever the make-up of the next government regional development and infrastructure in the north west will be a priority. IBEC is already calling for the next government to deliver quality infrastructure. North-West Regional President Seamus Hughes said; "We are hearing a consistent message from business across the region which see investment in public infrastructure and services as key to remaining competitive and easing the problems evident in housing, education, transport and health." "The North-West needs critical infrastructure to support growth and enhance regional connectivity and competitiveness, which are vital to a thriving regional economy. The lack of quality

infrastructure is having a direct effect on expansion plans, business productivity, and ability of companies to attract and retain talent." "Overhauling the regime for planning consents and appeals is essential to ensure fewer projects get bogged down in lengthy delays. Delays with key infrastructure projects have significant costs implications and pose a real threat to economic growth and competitiveness. "Growth targets were identified for the region in Project Ireland 2040. However, unless we deliver the infrastructure, the region will continue to develop at a slower pace. If we want to continue to attract investment and jobs and grow the regional economy as planned, infrastructure

investment and its timely delivery must be a priority. Its provision is central to the economic development of the North-West and achieving more balanced growth across the country. "We are calling on all election candidates to publicly get behind the need for quality infrastructure in the North-West and shape the future direction of the region. We must harness the rewards of economic success over recent years to make real and meaningful improvements to the quality of everyday life for people. Ensuring that we match record private investment with a renewed and expanded public infrastructure will be the defining challenge of the coming years. It will be up to the next government to make this happen."

Calling all North-west Creative Amateur Gardeners to apply for Bord Bia Bloom 2020!

Bord Bia Bloom festival returns this June bank holiday weekend from 28th May to 1st June in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. With planning well underway, Bord Bia Bloom is calling for budding gardeners from the North-west to submit entries for the popular Postcard garden category. Postcard gardens offer passionate amateur gardeners, garden

clubs, community and GIY groups a chance to showcase their talents to over 115,000 visitors attending the event. The Postcard gardens are small but perfectly formed 3m x 2m plots which can be used to represent a club, locality, special person or character from your community. Last year schools, communities, day care

centres and resource centres from around Ireland brought themes such as autism, mental-wellbeing, climate change and children’s literature to life through flowers, planting, art and woodwork. Longford Town Guild, Irish Countrywomen’s Association received ‘Best in Show’ for their Postcard Garden ‘Fork to Fork’ which demonstrated how we can turn the tide on unsustainable consumption by using the earth around us to feed ourselves. Kerrie Gardiner, Bord Bia Bloom Show Garden Manager said, “The Postcard gardens are such a special part of Bloom and are a personal favourite of mine! They offer emerging gardeners and community groups a chance to showcase their talents, while also inspiring other amateur gardeners to get out into nature and experience the joy of gardening”. The seat belongs to the people - Rose

Story by Catherine Gilmartin

U

ndoubtedly, the resounding success of Sinn Fein candidate Rose ConwayWalsh was the main feature of the 2020 General Election in Mayo. A delighted Rose, speaking to North West Express after the election, had this message for our readers and her supporters: “Thanks to everyone - I am deeply grateful to the people for their support, you have been there for me and I will be there for you. People want real change in their lives and don’t want to be left behind as they have been by other parties – that’s why they broke with tradition and voted Sinn Fein.” “I know we have challenging days ahead but I will put Mayo and rural Ireland in the front and centre of government. I will be working hard for equality of opportunity for all, healthcare and for farmers and fishermen who have not been treated very well and also importantly for pensioners who have a rightful expectation to a fair pension

at 65.” “This seat doesn’t belong to me it belongs to the people of Mayo.” Finally, Rose wants to say a big thank you to all her canvassing team who knocked on doors or worked quietly behind the scenes.

“I am so glad I have lived long enough to see people taking their power back. We can achieve great things when they realise the power they have.” Rose will be opening offices in Ballina, Castlebar and Belmullet.

Change? - or more of the same? - Continued from front page

Martin Kenny – Sinn Fein poll-topper in Sligo-Leitrim.

As yet, however, few have commented on whether this influenced the outcome, though it has been conceded that this demographic, many of whom are impacted by the housing crisis, flocked in their droves to Sinn Fein. Undoubtedly, Sinn Féin owes its relative success more to a groundswell of young voters’ impatience on domestic economic and welfare issues rather than to a resurgence of old-style republicanism. It probably also helped that Mary Lou McDonald has replaced Gerry Adams since

the last election in 2016. It all meant that one in three voters under 35 had a readymade vehicle for their frustrations. Also, the majority of these had no experience of the Troubles. Fine Gael has been punished for its failures on health, housing and childcare. Fianna Fáil were tarred with the same brush for “going to bed” with them in the manner they did and they weren’t really forgiven for their role in the 2009-10 banking crisis either. When the dust settles, however, we don’t know what will replace the FF-FG

confidence and supply “marriage”. Sinn Fein were the winners in the election and the momentum is with them. But to enter any coalition arrangement they will have to compromise. Their promises of change won’t be easily honoured. If Michael Martin’s apparent “softening” towards them materialises into substantial negotiations some of their party’s promises – increasing taxes on business and higher earners, a rent freeze abolition of property tax, etc. – may have to be watered down or dropped. So, while the election result signalled change the kind of change voters want is far from settled. Unfortunately, it may lead to a frustratingly familiar outcome and there will be no decisive break after all? Since the early ‘80s Ireland has produced coalitions or minority administrations (and sometimes both at once). That is likely to remain the same after this inconclusive election. The talking and posturing will occupy many weeks to come. We have to be prepared for some kind of fractured coalition and, if not, another general election within a short period – something the country doesn’t want as the Brexit negotiations take hold. The 2020 General Election was unquestionably what the political class likes to call a “change election”. It cannot be good for Ireland that, for now, the outcome looks likely not to be change but may instead mean more of the same.

Popular Ballina General Election candidate Michelle Mulherin was magnanimous in defeat after a gruelling election count at the end of which she was eliminated before F.G. colleague Alan Dillon. Like so many others, Michelle’s vote was impacted by the Sinn Fein surge which swept the country. Speaking to North West Express she had a simple message for all her loyal supporters. “I just want to say thank you so very much to everyone who

placed their confidence in me and voted for me.” Obviously Michelle had hoped for a better outcome: “I would have been thrilled to represent the people of our county in the Dáil again and to continue to work on the many great projects and issues which I have been pursuing - but it was not to be so. “I bow to the will of the voters, very mindful as always and grateful we live in a democracy with so many opportunities and freedoms deprived of so many people in the world. I have

been honoured and humbled to participate in the cut and thrust of it. It has been so much part of my life but now a new chapter has opened and I will embrace this too.” “A special word of thanks goes to my family, friends and supporters. We had the best campaign ever. I couldn't have gone on this journey without so much support along the way. Thanks to each of you for all the encouragement, work, effort and at times blood sweat and tears you put into GE campaign 2020. We were a great

A total of 605,000 passenger journeys were recorded on the Dublin/Mayo rail line in 2019, the highest figures ever recorded on the route. This represents a 4.9% increase on 2018. With congestion on roads, more and more people are opting to take the more sustainable option of the train when travelling between Dublin and Mayo. Economic improvements, greater numbers of people in employment, and increased tourist numbers visiting the Mayo region

have all contributed to the highest passenger numbers ever to be recorded on this route. Nationally, Iarnrod Éireann recorded its highest ever number of passenger journeys in 2019, with 50.1 million passenger journeys made across intercity, DART and Commuter services. This represents a 4.4% growth on the previous year. Commenting on the figures, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, Jim Meade said: “Recording the highest ever

passenger journeys on the Mayo route is a high point for us as an organisation, but more importantly it gives us the chance to thank all of our customers, who have voted with their feet in choosing to travel with us. Throughout 2020, I and my colleagues commit to providing a sustainable and reliable service for the people of Mayo. We will also be progressing investment in new fleet to help us address the continuing increase in demand for our services.”

A

presentation was recently made to A Lust for Life the and Irish Cancer Society in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon arising out of monies raised by the Fló Beo Shannon Swim 2019. In August 2019 Fló Beo made history when they became the first women to swim 245km the length of the River Shannon and raise €21,118. Mother and daughter, Eileen and Heather Maxwell, and friend Toni McGlynn started in Dowra, Co Cavan and swam 245km to Limerick City. Due to the unique and challenging nature of the swim the ladies gained a lot of public interest and wanted to use this opportunity to raise funds for two charities close to their hearts – The Irish Cancer Society and A Lust for Life. Everyone has experienced, either personally or through a loved one, the effects of mental illness and cancer. A Lust for Life and the Irish Cancer Society work to support people going through illness, and also to promote awareness of how to keep well. Fló Beo is delighted to have raised

€21,118 for these amazing charities. The money is being used by the Irish Cancer Society towards the Night Nurse Service in peoples homes. A Lust for Life is using the money on Future Flix, a new Mental Health support programme. A Lust for Life would love to reach every single student in Ireland. Schools all over the country are crying out for help and support. They are desperate for talks, resources, workshops: something to help the teachers deal with the challenges they are confronted by on a daily basis. The help and support of many people and organisations made this amazing journey possible. Permission was granted by Waterways Ireland to facilitate the swimmers and safety crew navigating the river and lakes. Jane Brady, from Brady Insurance played a blinder to get insurance cover for all the team for this unique event. The organisers wish to thank the main sponsors REA Brady, Carrick-on-Shannon, and Irish Contract Seating, Dromod. They also thank the local press were

also thanked for their help and support. Safety on the water was paramount during the swim and a strong support crew was with them on the journey. A special mention to the following: Dave Price from The Shannon Queen who is launching unique guided tours on the Shannon. Longford Sub Aqua who provided safety RIB for the whole of the swim. Kieran Walsh, his daughter Debbie Murphy, and grand-daughter Rebecca Murphy for providing boat cover, and excellent knowledge of the river. Joe Cleir from Leitrim Village guided the team down into Lough Allen as far as Drumshanbo. Many days the wind prevented the swimmers getting into the water and this proved to be a big mental challenge. The entire event took 32 days; with 23 days of swimming. They wish to thank each and every person from far and wide who donated money for the chosen charities. This includes Tesco, Carrick-on -Shannon who donated through the Tesco Community Fund.

Ring throws down gauntlet to Sinn Fein

J

UST after he was returned as a Fine Gael Deputy in the Mayo constituency this week outgoing Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, has challenged Sinn Féin to enter government. The Westport-based TD said the party 'opposed everything' during the last government and should now experience what it is like in government. "It's time we saw what solutions they have to the problems of this country. I know from my own experience that you have to make tough decisions in government and Sinn Féin should experience politics from that perspective," he said. On a personal level, Minister Ring said he is not in favour of Fine Gael entering

into coalition with Sinn Féin. "People have voted for change and it's time for Sinn Féin to take up the challenge," he said. He told Midwest Radio he does not think there will be a change of leadership in Fine Gael after the election. "It won't be on the agenda. Leo Varadkar turned the campaign around for us in the closing days of the campaign and he has my full support," he outlined. He thanked the electorate of Mayo for returning him to office once again with a resounding first preference vote of over 14,000. "I am very proud to serve my county for another term," he said, congratulating Sinn Féin Senator Rose Conway-Walsh on her election to Dail Eireann.

When making these statements Minister Ring also added he was confident of Fine Gael taking the last seat in Mayo due to its 40 per cent rating. He was proven right. When the final votes were counted early on Monday morning newcomer Alan Dillon came out on top, to take the fourth and final seat with popular Ballina-based Michelle Mulherin and Castlebar’s Lisa Chambers (FF) losing out in a nail-biter.

Weight Loss at Anne Tobin Beauty Clinic BY ANNE TOBIN

H

ere at Anne Tobin Beauty Clinic I understand the pitfalls of weight loss. Input of food must be less than output of energy and activity. This is the maths, easier said than done. You say! However I am here to guide you! I use the Dr Winterklinic meal plan with marvellous results. Every client needs motivation and support when striving to get to their recommended normal BMI. This is what is medically recommended as a healthy person's guideline. I am here to give the support. The plan includes an allergy test to pinpoint foods that the client has an intolerance to. In this way the foods that are toxic are identified and eliminated. The plan is designed for the client to lose at a safe rate at least 4kg a week. It works on the basis that insulin production is reduced in the body and weight loss is therefore speeded up. Insulin is the substance that breaks down sugar so limiting fat storage. The plan leads to a healthy change of lifestyle that helps identify and address the habits, behaviours and emotions at the root of the problem, so prepare to be transformed. The plan works because it addresses the physical and emotional reasons for weight gain and gives the tools to aid weight loss. Improve health by preventing type two diabetes and

joint and muscular pain. You'll find out why you turn to comfort eating when you are bored, stressed, tired, anxious and upset. The plan includes healthy eating options to satisfy your cravings. In order to achieve long-term goals, changes are encouraged. I will guide you with a long term plan that will give you techniques to conquer your cravings, get off the diet roller-coaster and achieve your goals. You will not be hungry on this plan as normal foods are eaten and the results speak for themselves and get rid of the sugar highs and lows. You will feel energised and will know the difference between hunger and cravings. This advisory meal plan is strictly on a one-to-one basis and is private. Along with the plan you can have lymphatic drainage and G5 massage which speeds up fluid retention and weight loss. Anne Tobin is an anatomy and physiology lecturer, allergy specialist and injury pain management therapist along with many other qualifications. Beauty classes are also available at the clinic. Anne has also been awarded by Kodak for her wedding make-up work and the clinic also offers tanning treatments and nail treatments for your wedding day. For more information call into the clinic located at 21 newline Castlebar, phone (094) 9026741 or email: annetobinbeautycollege@eircom.net.

1800 480 888 “I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

“From the start, Minister Ring has supported our efforts to get this greenway up and running. He is now delivering the funding to make it happen.” The work will entail: • Site Clearance over 1.5km • Wall set back • Provision of lateral Drainage • Boundary construction incl wall and fencing • Path kerbing • Installation of Cl 804 foundation subbase • Macadam surfacing • Adjoining accommodation works • Signage, seating

t was good news for Knockmore last week, the culmination of many years of hard work by a dedicated local committee. Fine Gael Councillor, Neil Cruise, confirmed that Mr Michael Ring TD, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, was set to announce €200,000 in funding for the construction of the first phase of the Foxford/Pontoon Greenway under his Department’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. Cllr Cruise said: “It has been confirmed to me by Minister Ring that he will next week be announcing €200,000 in funding for the construction of the first phase of the Foxford/Pontoon Greenway. “This will ensure the development of a 1.5km Greenway from Bellass to Clossagh townlands at Foxford for walkers and cyclists. “The Greenway is the first part of a greater route linking Foxford to Pontoon and ultimately connecting into the existing Castlebar/Turlough greenway at

Turlough. “The benefits for the Foxford/Pontoon area will be significant and long standing. We are blessed to live in beautiful part of the world and this greenway will help attract visitors to our area and will provide a wonderful outlet to locals. I genuinely believe this is the start of something really special.

This project forms one part of the proposed Foxford / Pontoon Greenway which is planned to ultimately connect into the Mayo Greenway network at Turlough. According to Fáilte Ireland, walking attracts more visitors than any other holiday activity and contributes significantly to motivating visitors to choose Ireland as their holiday destination. Walking offers the highest potential of any activity for Ireland for both domestic and overseas markets.

Roscommon local doctor says he will be last GP in village The village of Ballygar, Roscommon, could be without a GP in the future according to the village’s current GP. Prominent local doctor Martin Daly has warned that he will be the last GP in the village unless there is a significant investment in general practice. Dr. Daly, who is former president of the Irish Medical Organisation, said that general practice had been “gutted” by cuts since 2010. At the same time, GPs were serving a growing and aging population, many of whom had complex medical needs. “We never had waiting lists in general practice until the last three years,” he said. “GPs are turning away patients because they are unable to take on the responsibility and the workload associated with the provision of a high-quality service.” He said that GP posts were becoming increasingly unattractive, with very few young GPs willing to commit to a 365-day-a-year medical card contract as well as provide all the infrastructure and take all the responsibility “for a service that is increasingly state-run”. “There are only 136 GMS contract holders under the age of 35 and there are almost 600 GPs that will retire in the next five years,” the Ballygar doctor said. “The figures are stark.” In terms of Sláintecare, the cross-party 10-year programme to transform the health and social care service, Dr Daly warned that “if the State continues to deny there is a problem in general practice then there will be no GPs to deliver Sláintecare.

Wedding Fashion for 2020 Slip dresses are the season must-have

teeters on the brink of a fall. Deliberately modest design and translucent fabrics used in the dresses infatuate us. Magnificent lace, thin tulle, a smoky grid alternates with more denser materials… They emphasize seductive forms of a maiden figure without trite hints. Among slip models deep necklaces or high cuts of skirts are quite rare. In this case designers suggest covering juicy details with a long veil. And they trim the veil with the same lace as on the dress. Provocative slip dress trends were excitedly supported by many Russian celebrities. The singer Pelageya, designer Kira Plastinina, model Anastasia Shubskaya… They have worn effective, lacy dresses and covered open parts with a long veil.

Dense matte texture fabric is one more punch line of a royal dress. It turns any modest design into the embodiment of stylish elegance and exclusiveness. The mermaid and trapeze

Capes and Stoles easily move in the first wedding dance. In 2020 the list of such dresses will be headed by minimal models with simple cut lines. Unique Wedding Ideas

Y

ours won’t be just another cookie-cutter wedding—here are our top ideas to make your wedding a standout celebration.

Convenient Child Care Hire a babysitter (or two) and set her up in a room so your youngest guests have a place to go when they tucker out. If it’s possible, pick a room near your reception location so parents can stop by to check in on the tykes and then return to the party easily. Stock the room with snacks, games and a portable DVD player to keep them entertained, and make sure there’s a soft sofa and blankets for those inevitable naps.

A Memorable Guest Book Think beyond the typical guest book. One creative idea we love: Create a jigsaw puzzle of your photo and let guests sign each piece. Or put out silver trays with engraving pens so guests can carve a lasting message on a useful keepsake for you. A (Friends and) Family Tree Seating Chart You worked hard on figuring out that seating chart, so get the dinner conversation started by showing guests how they’re connected. Create a sign that shows the relationships between the guests who will be sitting next to each other—it’ll help break the ice for those who haven’t already

met. A First-Dance Confetti Drop Your first dance will be one of the highlights of your wedding, so add this extra-special touch to up the entertainment factor (and make for some serious photo ops). If your song is slow and romantic, have fresh flower petals instead of confetti dropped from the ceiling. Your rental company and florist can work together to make this happen—and don’t forget to make sure the reception waitstaff will be standing by to clean up.

petals and birdseed. Jazz up your exit by passing out small bags of colorful confetti, paper airplanes, mini beach balls, or even lavender buds for everyone to toss your way. Even better: Stage your own mini parade by passing out parasols and noisemakers for your guests to escort you to your getaway car. A Surprise Choreographed Dance Take a few dance lessons before

your wedding, but instead of the standard waltz, kick it up a notch by learning a sultry tango or a high-energy swing routine, and then surprise everyone during your first dance. For an unexpected surprise, get your dad or even your grandpa in on the act. Imagine the looks on your guests’ faces when you and your pops break into a hip-hop routine mid-father-daughter dance.

A Video Confessional Booth For a fresh twist on the hot photo booth trend, rent a video booth where guests can record a quick on-screen message for you. Ask your videographer to edit some of the best clips into your wedding video. Then, post your other favorite video “confessions” on your wedding website and encourage guests to check them out in your thank-you notes. A Showstopping Ceremony Exit If you play it right, your ceremony exit will be one of the most heavily photographed moments of your wedding, so forget the rose

Together Now exhibition

22nd February, 5 p.m. Together Now (in Ballina Civic Offices) is an exhibition of painting, drawing, installation and sculpture by artists from the Kilkenny Collective for Arts Talent (KCAT), in Callan, Co. Kilkenny and artists from very different practice contexts from all over Ireland, who have been working together in residencies and other forms of engagement since 2014. The work on show has been made as a result of their collaborations and conversations, involving performance, installation and a variety of media from film and video to very un-traditional interpretations of traditional media such as painting and sculpture. The exhibition is curated by Catherine Marshall and runs until 22nd March. The exhibition runs simultaneously across three Mayo galleries: Linenhall Arts Centre; Ballina Civic Offices; and Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle. An opening tour of the exhibition will take place across all three venues on Saturday 22nd February. Admission: FREE. All Welcome. Free bus transport will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking for the bus is essential. Contact 096 73593 for more details.

Crowman coming back to Arts Centre

Wednesday, 21st February Crowman is a dark comedy starring Jon Kenny (D’Unbelievables), written and directed by Katie Holly (Marion, Sharon), about one man’s loneliness – and his pathological hatred of crows. Dan is a man on a mission; to scatter, maim or kill every crow that has ever blighted his land and his life. However he gets distracted easily by flights of the imagination and memories of events from his past and a weekly schedule of funerals and masses he must attend, imagined conversations with his beloved sheepdog, and a stream of racing commentators, TV chefs and David Attenborough - all so that he can hear a voice that is not his own. Tickets: €18 / €16. Early booking advised.

The Importance of Being Earnest Riverside Theatre Group Produced by Olivia Loftus and directed by Ray Collins. Celebrating its 125th anniversary, The Importance of Being Earnest was first performed in London on 14th February 1895 to great acclaim. No doubt there will be the same acclaim for this production from our own Riverside Theatre Group! Save the date: Wednesday, 13th February, 8.00 Oscar Wilde’s brilliant comedy The Importance of Being Earnest takes a satirical look at the lives of two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the utterly reliable John Worthing J.P who lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily

Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions, and with the formidable Lady Bracknell. Considered Wilde’s witty masterpiece, this production, featuring an all local cast, produced by Olivia Loftus and directed by Ray Collins, is not be missed! Tickets: €12 / €10. Early booking advised.

Neil Delamere: End of Watch Fri 28 Feb 2020, 8pm / €24 Fresh from a sell-out tour, star of BBC’s the Blame Game, Fighting Talk and the Newsquiz Neil Delamere returns to Hawk's Well Theatre with a brand new show. Time waits for no man, especially one trying to buy a watch. Things always get complicated. “You’ll be hard pressed to find a more gifted comic at the Fringe. *****” The Scotsman cos he don’t do mornings

Laugh out loud: The healing benefits of laughter

Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasureinducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.”

A

little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy! “Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and

lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laugh-ologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress and increase motivation, and to the

health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.” Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being.

Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibodyproducing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response. Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and

promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent. Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient. Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism. Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive. Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic. Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits. Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Look up at the ceiling, and you’ll notice a positive lift. There’s no science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.
