EWS that lead concentrations of nearly 15 times over the legal limit have been found in tests in north Dublin and unsafe levels found elsewhere in the country is bound to give cause for concern. In fact, since the start of 2017 unsafe levels of lead have been found in drinking water in more than 30 areas, according to figures from Irish Water obtained by the Irish Times under the Freedom of Information Act. Among the tests listed was a property in Rosses Point, Sligo, last year which found levels six times higher than the limit for safe consumption. A test in Kilkeedy, Co. Clare, found lead levels more than 10 times above safe drinking limits at 113 mg/l. The most serious result was from a test of drinking water near Sutton Dart station, north Co Dublin which found lead contamination nearly 15 times above the legal limit last year. Other parts of north Dublin, including Coolock, tested with concentration 12 times above the legal limit. HSE guidelines state that long-term exposure to lead can affect brain development in children, or babies in the womb. It can also cause harm to kidneys and cause high blood pressure, and is classed as a probable carcinogen. It is generally accepted the contamination is the result of older lead pipes still in use across the public water network. Irish Water say there are no lead water mains in Ireland. However, service connections within properties can contain traces of lead. The vast majority of lead pipes are contained within properties built up to and including the 1970s. Continued on Page 2

I
conic Irish (and Sligo) folk group Dervish released their new album, The Great Irish Songbook last featuring performances by a remarkable array of guest vocalists. One of those is Irish actor and director Brendan Gleeson - known for his portrayal of Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody in the Harry Potter films - who lends his lilting baritone to the band’s spirited rendition of DK Gavan’s muchloved classic “The Rocky Road To Dublin,” which chronicles the adventures of a man as he travels from his home in Tuam, County Galway to Liverpool. The Great Irish Songbook, Dervish’s first studio album in more than a decade, is an ambitious project that boasts guest appearances by an extraordinary assemblage of singers and musicians from both sides of the Atlantic. Dervish - Michael Holmes, Cathy Jordan, Liam Kelly, Brian McDonagh, Shane Mitchell, Tom Morrow, with Seamie O Dowd - is joined on The Great Irish Songbook by fellow Irish artists Andrea Corr, Brendan Gleeson, and Imelda May; English singer Kate Rusby; Welsh singer-songwriter David Gray; and from the United States, Steve Earle, Rhiannon Giddens, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, The SteelDrivers, and Abigail Washburn. The album has been highly recommended by Hot Press: “If you need an urgent injection of nourishment for your mind, body and spirit, treat yourself to this invigorating excavation of the The Great Irish Songbook,” while The Irish Edition’s Jamie O’Brien calls Dervish “one of the best bands in any genre to ever come out of Ireland” and proclaims the album their “best so far.”
On September 19th, Dervish will premiere The Great Irish Songbook at London’s famed Palladium. Special guests David Gray and Kate Rusby will perform on the show and more guests will be confirmed shortly. A full slate of tour dates for summer
and fall will be announced in the coming weeks. The band, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, was interviewed by Scott Simon on NPR’s Weekend Edition on April 13th.

T
reat yourself to a weekend of exquisite music this May bank holiday as the 20th Sligo International Chamber Music Festival brings some of the finest Irish and international musicians to perform with the internationally acclaimed ensemble-in-residence, the Vogler Quartet. Taking place from Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May in the intimate surrounds of St. Columba’s Church Drumcliffe, nestled below Benbulben Mountain, and The Model, a contemporary arts centre in Sligo town, the Sligo International Chamber Music Festival is a highlight in the annual calendar of music events. More details at www.sligochambermusicie. Commenting on the festival programme, Artistic Director Tim Vogler says, “For our 20th anniversary, we have put together an ambitious high-quality programme which sees the return of many festival favourites from the past 20 years – both musicians and music – we look forward to welcoming them back and performing with them. We are very excited to present a new commission by Nick Roth and we pay homage to our dear friend Seán McSweeney in a very special event called His Deep Gaze.” This year’s festival boasts an exciting line up of Irish and international guest artists including the Grieg Trio, Eugène Mursky (piano); David Orlowsky (clarinet); Michael McHale (piano); Dermot Dunne (accordion); Sharon Carty (mezzo-soprano); Vashti Hunter (cello); Malachy Robinson (double bass); Bruno Schneider (French horn); Henrik Rabien (bassoon) and Nick Roth (composer, saxophone, producer). These illustrious performers, along with the Vogler Quartet will perform music from all
periods and musical styles including quintets, quartets, trios, duos, solos and songs by composers Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Beethoven and many, many more, something for everyone from music lovers and enthusiasts to the novice and the curious. In celebration of the 20th anniversary year, two very special new
events take place funded by Sligo County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme 20182022. On Monday 6th May, the premiere of Nick Roth’s Second Quintet for Accordion and String Quartet commissioned by the Festival will be performed by Dermot Dunne (accordion) and the Vogler Quartet On Saturday 4th May a very special event featuring music, poetry and art curated by poet Gerard Smyth to honour the late artist Seán McSweeney takes place. His Deep Gaze coincides with the inclusion of a number of Seán’s pieces in The Keeper exhibition, the Model’s biggest showcase of The Niland Collection to date. The festival once again features the successful Tuned In! Youth programme cofunded by the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership, in association with Music Generation Sligo. This unique and innovative programme is curated by Professor James Cavanagh from the Royal Irish Academy of Music. The Grammy-nominated Vogler Quartet together for over thirty years and, with all four of its original members, continues to build upon its reputation as one of the finest quartets of its generation. Founding members Tim Vogler, Frank Reinecke, Stefan Fehlandt, and Stephan Forck are widely recognized for their uncommon musical intelligence, homogeneous sound, insightful interpretations, and unconventional programming. They have created a vibrant ensemble spirit, as well as a unique string quartet sound which consistently offers new insights into the genre. Formed in East Berlin in 1985, the quartet continues to pursue an ambitious international schedule of concerts and master classes in prestigious venues around the world. make a delicious sparkling orange flavoured drink. Get plenty of sleep: Try to keep your sleep routine as regular as possible. Sleep helps your brain to assimilate new knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to test day. Put away the phone: You probably don’t even realise the number of times you check Facebook, Instagram or whatever your vice is. When you add it all up together, it amounts to a significant waste of time. Try to leave the phone out of sight and reach during study time Time for yourself: Try to leave enough time in your revision for some fun. Do something you enjoy for a while if you want to stay in a good mood. Don’t (always) listen to others: "comparison is the thief of joy". While it is helpful to discuss topics with fellow students and often to revise together, try not to compare other peoples' revision to your own. Chances are you’re doing just fine Eat properly: Make sure your diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables. Try New Beeline Teenager Vitamin D3 and Multivitamins to make sure your body is getting all the vitamins and minerals you need.
Be realistic: Don't try to do too much work each day and make a study plan that is realistic. This will put you in control. Give yourself plenty of short breaks as you revise, this keeps you fresher for longer, so you will learn more.
Get some exercise: It's a fantastic stress buster. Go running, skateboarding, play a sport, or just go for a brisk walk. If you are not sleeping very well, exercise can make a real difference. Try Beeline Co-Enzyme Q10 to helps to optimize your energy levels.

Making the Right Connections

Irish emigrant’s career as an early telephone pioneer in America to be launched in Mayo County Library
Michael Larkin and 2019 Mayo Person of the Year and Chairman of Portwest, Cathal Hughes, holding a framed copy of Thomas Larkin's American passport. "That's an amazing invention Mr Bell…But who would ever want to use it?" (US President Rutherford B Hayes) Issued 10th April 2019 - A fascinating new book, aptly entitled Making the Right Connections, is due to be launched in the coming weeks. The book, published by Bookhub Publishing, written and compiled by local author Michael Larkin, vividly describes significant milestones in the evolution of telecommunications, predictions made regarding Alexander G Bell's new invention, Irish emigration, transatlantic connectivity and an outline of the journey undertaken by Thomas Larkin, one of the early telephone pioneers of America. Following the invention of the
telephone by Bell in 1876, most of the American people, including President Rutherford B Hayes remained sceptical as to the merits of Bell's new speaking telegraph. In today's world of instantaneous connectivity, it's interesting to note that it was as recent as 1983 before the cellular or mobile phone became commercially available for the first time. The first delivery of mail 'by air' between North America and Ireland occurred on June 15, 1919, when John Alcock and Arthur W Brown made the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic ocean, crashlanding in a bog near Clifden, County Galway. Making the Right Connections has
received endorsements from a number of respected Irish and Irish American academics, including author, historian and 2019 Meitheal Mhuigheo recipient Terry Reilly who stated: “Here is a terrific story about a young man from a rural village in County Mayo, who, like so many of his friends, emigrated to the USA, simply to find employment. As a distinguished member of the Bell Telephone Company in Pennsylvania, he made a significant contribution to the telephone industry in the early 1900s.” Thomas Larkin, the central character in the book, was a grand-uncle of the author Michael Larkin. He was born in the townland of Derrew, Ballyheane, on July 4, 1874. Similar to thousands of other young Irishmen and women, he made that perilous voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in the hope of securing a better future in the New World. His 'American Dream' became a reality when he secured employment with the Bell Telephone Company in Pennsylvania. Having had a distinguished career as one of the early telephone pioneers of America, he received many accolades for his role in the delivery of the telephone network into the American mid-west. Speaking in advance of the launch, author Michael Larkin said: “It's very fitting that Making the Right Connections will be launched in advance of Mayo Day, a spectacular occasion dedicated to celebrating our culture, heritage and connectedness with our diaspora throughout the world.” Award winning Midwest Radio presenter Tommy Marren will officially launch this eagerly anticipated book in Mayo County Library on Monday, April 29 at 7pm. All are welcome. Book signings and sales will take place from 6pm.
Connacht Battle for the Paddle this Easter weekend
S
tand Up Paddleboarding or SUPping is currently experiencing a huge surge in popularity with people of all ages and sizes discovering a wonderful new way to enjoy our waterways. Leading the way is Harbour SUP and Sail from Adventure Sligo who are responsible for introducing many to this relatively new sport. It’s not only a way to enjoy an afternoon however, SUPping also has a competitive side and on Easter weekend Harbour SUP and Sail are holding the wonderfully named Connacht Battle for the Paddle. Now there’s a different way to enjoy a day out with the family,
watching SUP experts showing their skills in the surf. “The Connacht Battle for the Paddle is Irelands premier all discipline SUP event”, explains Mikee Hamilton of Harbour SUP and Sail, “That means competitors have a choice of events to take part in. The event includes Distance Racing, Technical Sprinting (racing around a course in the surf) and a SUP Surfing contest”. This is the fourth year of the Connacht Battle for the Paddle and competitors are expected from all around the country. “We’re hoping to get some from
the UK and Europe as well”, says Mikee Hamilton, “The Irish SUP Surf Classic is taking place the weekend before at Aughris/Tra Bhuí so we are hoping that the majority of travelling competitors will compete in both events. We welcome entries for all categories and subject to ability we have equipment available to hire for competitors”. The SUP events take place on both Easter Saturday and Sunday. Saturday begins mid-afternoon in Enniscrone with the 3km Technical Sprint race which is three laps of a course running from Enniscrone Pier into the beach and surf. On Saturday evening it’s time for the Distance Races (2.5km and 5km) on the River Moy from the first bridge in town to The Quay with a finish loop in front of Crockets. On Sunday, Enniscrone Beach is the venue for SUP Surfing centred near the Old Bathhouse. The exact schedule will be announced about four days in advance; weather plays its part in making final decisions. Spectators are very welcome and will be well catered for with food and drink stalls. The event is kindly sponsored by Billabong Ireland and Typhoon International. For further details, contact Mikee Hamilton (086 0315737, mikeehamilton20@gmail.com or look for @harboursup on Facebook).

LEARN TO DRIVE IN 2019 WITH
New Yoga Exercise DVD for People with Lung Fibrosis
ROSCOMMON DRIVING SCHOOL
Tel: 087-2295551
D
ublin GAA footballer, yoga instructor and patron of the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association, Michael Darragh Macauley, is the face of a newlylaunched yoga exercise DVD for people with lung fibrosis. Yoga has been shown to provide benefits to people with lung fibrosis in helping their health and wellbeing through improved breathing, mobility, flexibility, as well as through the relief of tension and anxiety. In the video produced by the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association – which is available to view online or to order at www.ilfa.ie – Michael Darragh takes three patient volunteers through a series of breathing and meditation techniques, followed by physical exercises. There are two levels of exercises featured which are suitable for beginners and those who feel they can progress to a more advanced stage. Before undertaking the exercises, viewers are asked to adhere to the “BORG” scale – named after Gunnar Borg – which helps them assess how breathless they should be when exercising and gauge what is the right level of activity for them. Personal Loss For Michael Darragh Macauley, lung fibrosis is a cause especially close to his heart having sadly lost his father to the disease: “My father unfortunately had lung fibrosis and sadly passed away in 2012. It was a very tough time for all the family as you can imagine. Consequently, I was very happy to become involved in this DVD which I hope will make a real difference to the lives of people with lung fibrosis. I have a deep appreciation of yoga and the holistic benefits it offers across a whole range of areas. Even though it becomes increasingly difficult to exercise with this condition, it’s important that patients do try, and yoga is perfect because they can push themselves as hard as they see fit. “In the video we go through a series of exercises that can help people manage their health and cope with the
challenges of living with the condition. The great thing is that the exercises can be done whether seated or standing and can be adapted to suit each individual’s abilities. People can go at their own pace and no one gets left behind.” Matt Cullen, from Swords, is one of three people with lung fibrosis to volunteer to take part in the yoga exercise DVD under the expert guidance of Michael Darragh. Matt’s visions of becoming a body contortionist were slightly wide of the mark: “I had never tried yoga before and had the false notion that it would involve somewhat contortionist body movements! However, doing the yoga class with Michael Darragh was a very relaxing experience and there was no pressure whatsoever. The yoga exercises were safe, easy to follow and very doable, and I found them good for both mind and body. Not only did they help with my breathing and flexibility, but they were also really helpful in reducing the stress and anxiety that comes with living with lung fibrosis.” Home Comfort For Dr Kate O’Reilly, Consultant Respiratory Physician, and Irish Lung Fibrosis Association spokesperson, physical exercise is key to helping manage lung fibrosis: “One of the great things about yoga is that it is suitable for people with varying levels of lung fibrosis, including those who may have had a transplant or are oxygen dependent. For those on oxygen, we would urge them to speak to their medical team about turning up their oxygen levels to agreed levels so that they can cope with the activity and exercise comfortably. Everyone gets breathless when they exercise but what is important is that lung fibrosis patients know how to manage their level of breathlessness. Positive lifestyle changes and, in particular, physical exercise, is hugely important for people with lung fibrosis. This DVD now means that they can exercise in the comfort of their own sitting room.”
There are more than 200 types of lung fibrosis and IPF, or Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (meaning the cause is unknown), is the most common. IPF is a rare, chronic, progressive condition that causes irreversible scarring of the lungs. It is characterised by extreme breathlessness, low energy and fatigue, dry cough and, ultimately, respiratory failure requiring medical oxygen therapy 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, there is no cure. Approximately 400 patients are diagnosed with IPF each year and 1,000 are living with the condition. It is usually diagnosed in people over the age of 50, affects more men than women, and is more common in smokers or those who have smoked in the past. However, a substantial number of patients with lung fibrosis have never smoked, and it has been known to develop in different family members, suggesting a possible genetic link. Top Tips for Living with Lung Fibrosis If you smoke, stop. Ask your family and friends not to smoke around you. Eat healthily. This, along with exercise, will help you to maintain a healthy weight as being overweight can make it harder for you to breathe and cause you to become more tired. Stay active. Exercise will help you keep fit and strong, not to mention improve your mood and well-being. Attend pulmonary rehabilitation classes. These are supervised exercise programmes that take place in hospitals or in the community – just ask your doctor for details. Get out there! Continue to socialise, enjoy your hobbies and join a lung fibrosis support group. This yoga exercise DVD has been made possible thanks to the support of US philanthropic organisation, Three Lakes Partners. The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association also offers a number of other exercise tools for people with lung fibrosis, including its 2,000 Steps a Day Exercise Challenge Walking Pack and an exercise DVD. On Friday April 5th the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN), North West Regional Awards were held; Fourteen businesses were nominated for awards including Dan Flannery, F1 Car Wash & Valet, Ballymote and Dave Lawless, Trad Softly, Tour Music Guide, Sligo. The winner’s announcement was made to a packed room at an awards ceremony held in the Farnham Estate Spa & Golf Resort in Cavan. Fourteen entrepreneurs from all over the North West counties of Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim, Sligo, Monaghan and Louth anxiously awaited to hear Mr.
Terry Hyland, CEO Breffni Integrated, a member of ILDN, announce the winners. Victorious on the night were Patrick McDermott, Creative Landscaping; and Daniel McGrory, Building Services, both from Inishowen, County Donegal and Rachael McCabe, Sound in Motion School of Music, from County Cavan. Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr. Terry Hyland, CEO Breffni Integrated, a member of ILDN, said “There are 49 Local Development Companies (LDC’s) operating throughout the country and their representative organisation, the
Irish Local Development Network (ILDN), is championing the recognition of enterprise creation in the border region through this business awards initiative. In my view every one of the companies represented here tonight are winners. They all have had different business experiences and challenges and we in the LDC’s were delighted to be able to support them to set up their own business. Why a STEAM SHOWER should be the next luxurious addition to your bathroom
S
team showers are the next big thing in bathroom décor—and they have more benefits than just relaxation. Shower trends can be all over the place but steam showers may be here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. All trends shift, but in bathrooms, décor preferences, styles, and features seem to be moving in a more luxurious direction, while also celebrating a little industrial modernism; just look at the exposed pipe shower trend. Now, the steam shower might just be the bathroom must-have of the year. What is a steam shower? A steam shower is a shower— typically a standalone stall, without a tub—that can produce enough steam to create a soothing, warm, humid environment without running hot water for an extended period. Steam has proven positive effects for dry skin and clogged sinuses; it also provides a huge opportunity to relax completely and comfort stiff muscles in a warm, moist space. Adding some essential oils or other mood-boosting scents can introduce some aromatherapy benefits, too. Once someone has reaped the benefits of a good steam soak, a quick rinse in the very same shower is easy. Most steam showers are made with glass enclosures that help keep the steam trapped, and many have benches to maximize steam enjoyment. Steam showers certainly aren’t for everyone, but anyone seeking some extra spa-like features might love the idea of coming home to steam.
HOMES
Northwest Express April, 2019
& GARDENS
What does a steam shower cost? To install a steam shower, homeowners have two options: A standalone steam generator or a steam shower kit. Generators start at around €800, plus installation costs, and can cost thousands, depending on the different features, power levels, and more. Installation is best left to the pros, especially because plumbing is involved. Steam shower kits cost around €3,000 and more. A standalone generator can be added to a new shower stall to produce steam through a steam head; the generator can be installed in a wall, with the rest of the plumbing, leaving the control panel and steam outlet exposed for a sleek look. A steam shower could be installed in an existing shower, but it would take some clever maneuvering and is probably most efficiently done with the installation of a whole new shower. Steam shower kits (like the Ariel steam shower, of which there are several variations) include the glass enclosure, steam generator, and typical shower tools—think rainfall shower head, massage jets, and more. Priced at approx.€3,000 and more, these are certainly luxuries, and include surround sound speakers, radio, and more for a truly sublime steam shower experience. Installation of steam shower kits is also best left to the pros. Why should you get a steam shower? Steam showers certainly sound luxurious, but with such a hefty
cost, they may not be at the top of the typical homeowner’s must-have list. (If they could clean themselves, eliminating the need for figuring out the best shower cleaner and learning how to clean a shower head, it would be a different story.) Maybe they should be, though. According to a new analysis from real estate sites in the UK homes with steam showers sell for 31 percent more than their expected values; that could mean tens of thousands of extra dollars. Homes with steam showers did take 18 days longer to sell than expected, on average, but home owners not in a rush may appreciate a sale price above ask price more than a quick sale. Adding a steam shower could give home sellers a good chance of making good money (again, potentially tens of thousands of euros) on the sale of their home, especially if they plan to sell in the recent future and are already considering a renovation. Remodeling costs certainly aren’t cheap, but making the right decisions in the process can pay off in increased home values later. With that knowledge, a steam shower seems less indulgent and more like a savvy, resale-oriented decision. (And who doesn’t want to come home to a sauna every day?)

Enjoy growing your own healthy fruit and vegetables - it’s easy with the help of the experts at Ardcarne Garden Centre.
T
ent varieties are grown nearby. Everyone can grow fruit and vegetables, you don’t need acres of space and it’s great fun to keep even a small patch, or a few pots at home. The satisfaction of picking your own, not to mention the difference in taste, will make you want to try more and more every year.
he taste of home-grown fruit and vegetables really is far superior to anything that you can buy. You know exactly what has been used, or more importantly what has not been used, to grow your own produce and of course knowing that you have grown them yourself adds to the flavour! Home-grown goodness This is a perfect time to make a start growing your own fruit and vegetables and it’s so easy. Do you fancy picking your own sun-warmed strawberries in summer or perhaps a bunch of fresh herbs or salad leaves from right outside your own back door? Well everyone can enjoy these delicious pleasures, even if you are completely new to gardening. Get a head start Sowing vegetable, salad and herb seeds is fun and rewarding, but you may want to save time and buy ready-to-go baby vegetable plants, offering convenience and fast results. You’ll find all your favourite vegetable plants here at Ardcarne Garden Centre, including cabbages, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, beetroot, spinach, peas, salads and a great selection for growing under cover such as tomatoes and cucumbers. New potatoes Having your own new potatoes is a real treat in summer and now is the time to get planting. You’ll find a fabulous range of early, second early and maincrop varieties at Ardcarne Garden Centre and some of the newer blight resistant varieties such as ‘Sarpo Mira’. It’s also a great time to put in onion sets, garlic and shallots.
Fruity flavours Every garden should include a couple of fruit trees and bushes as with the minimum of care, they provide healthy and delicious fruit for years, perhaps even generations. Children also love to grow their own fruit, especially strawberries, which crop easily and are so scrumptious with ice cream! They will happily grow in a pot on a sunny patio, where you can watch the fruit ripen and pick them at a moment’s notice. The taste of home-grown strawberries is simply sublime and a great treat in summer. Blueberries are very easy to grow as well and if you’ve never grown one before you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well they crop. The fruit grows on a bushy plant which is very happy to live in a large pot of Ericaceous, or lime-free, compost (the same type that is used for rhododendrons). Give them plenty of water in dry weather and they will reward you with delicious blue-black fruits in summer. Blueberries are regarded as one of the new super foods, full of antioxidants, so they do you lots of good as well! Enjoy your own apples If you have a reasonable-sized garden, then why not try a few apple trees? They are very long-lived trees and will give years of pleasure and fruit for generations. Varieties such as ‘Katja’ and ‘Discovery’, are particularly suited for our climate in the west of Ireland and highly recommended. Plum and pear trees will also give good crops in most sheltered locations. It’s worth remembering that fruit trees will set more fruit if at least two differ-

How to decorate a cosy and compact sitting room, snug or lounge
& GARDENS
SMALL LIVING ROOM IDEAS HOMES I
f you are looking for small living room ideas, take inspiration from our gallery of beautiful small space designs to unlock the potential of your compact living room. When you are redecorating, one of the easiest ways to make a small living room feel more spacious is to inject soft, pastel shades into your design scheme to keep the room warm and inviting.
SWAP YOUR SOFA FOR A SNUGGLER
A bulky sofa can gobble up living room space quickly, so if you have an especially tiny room, ask yourself if you could manage with an equally comfy but far less invasive ‘snuggles’. Otherwise known as a 1.5 seater, it can easily accommodate a parent and child – or a cuddly couple. This room also employs another neat trick that’s genius for small rooms that back onto gardens – a botanical decorating scheme. ‘Pretty florals are perfect for blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors,’ says our Senior Features Editor Stephanie Durrant. Creating this visual link will draw the eye outside and again make the rom feel bigger.
AVOID A CORRIDOR EFFECT WITH A CORNER SOFA
This reception room is quite long and thin, and previously the owners had a long dark sofa, which only added to the corridor effect. By swapping it for a pale L-shaped design, they’ve created a cosy corner and opened up the space. There’s now also room for more seating by way of large floor cushions.
INVEST IN MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE
When it comes to small living rooms, hard-working, multi-functional pieces of furniture are your friends. Take this coffee table, which doubles as a storage bin, allowing you to clear away any clutter at a moment’s notice. You could also invest in lidded stools, or even a sofa with storage under the seat. Add wall mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces into your design scheme to maximise the amount of natural light in your living room to make it feel bigger and brighter.
DRAW ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE DOOR USE STOOLS AS SEATS
The first thing you should never do if you have a small living room is cram in too much furniture. Instead, choose a sofa that’s proportional to the size of the space, and if you’re still in need of more seating, use stools. They’ll take up far less room than bulky armchairs, and can be easily manoeuvred. If you like your living room cute and cosy, try clustering colourco-ordinated objects together – from pictures to cushions – to create a coherent look. Make the most of natural light in the room by keeping window dressings simple. If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings, full-length curtains are a good choice as they’ll draw the eye upwards and create the illusion of space, even if the square footage in your living room is a bit meagre. Subtle stripe designs add to the feeling of extra depth. If you do choose curtains, make sure they can be swept away from the window for light or alternatively go for Roman or roller blinds.
Whether it’s a bijou country cottage or a studio flat, it can be tricky to create a relaxing bolt hole when your front door opens straight into your living room. Take the emphasis away from the entrance by creating a focal point with thoughtfully arranged seating. Here, a neat twoseater and comfy armchair have been placed at a 90-degree angle to a slim side table and lamp. A cool neutral palette works beautifully with the rustic plasterwork and the roller blind makes the most of a recessed window to add extra square inches to the room.

SHOW OFF INTERESTING OBJECTS
Just because your living room is verging on the small side, it doesn’t mean that you should hide away all your favourite belongings in storage. If you have objects that are worthy of showing off then display them along an open shelf, above the sofa. This idea is great for when floor space is at a premium.
DISTRACT THE EYE WITH CHARACTERFUL FURNISHINGS
While banishing clutter might help a smaller living room feel more open, if you’re a fan of the cosy, lived-in look such a pared back scheme will do little for you. But small doesn’t have to mean bare and characterless. Try the classic combination of dark leather armchair and traditional fireplace – there’s nothing like it for creating a warm, cosy environment. Add much-loved items and accessories – in an interesting, character-filled scheme, no one will be thinking about how small the room is.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE SPACE UNDER THE STAIRS Make the most of the unused space under the stairs by incorporating everything from storage to quirky accessories. If you have space issues in your small abode and need to make the most of every nook and cranny then turn to that nimble spot under the stairs into a warm and cosy living space. Here, a built-in bookcase and sofa tucks in neatly in that often unloved and underused area.
WORK WITH ORIGINAL FEATURES
MAXIMISE STORAGE POTENTIAL
Small living rooms need to be kept fresh and uncluttered with well-chosen storage. A great way to make a small living room feel larger is to keep it meticulously tidy and in order to do that, everything in the room needs to have its proper place. Floating shelves are perfect for small rooms because they can hold a lot of things on a wall or in alcoves, or choose bespoke fitted, floor-to-ceiling shelves and cupboards that make use of every inch of spare space.
Give architectural features a modern update with a fresh coat of paint and light retouching. Here original features have been painted to give this living room a modern edge. The black fireplace remains the focal point, and adds a sense of cosiness along with the chunky sofa and rustic wooden coffee table. A wool rug brings texture to the scheme and enhances the inviting feel of the room.

or a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's a spot to do schoolwork, play games, rough-house, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile toys. As you plan out your child's bedroom, you'll need a space that serves all those functions — and is comfortable and practical for several years to come. The ultimate experts on what kids like best are kids themselves, so get them involved in the design process by letting them help with selections. That being said, children's preferences change often, so use accessories and colors that be easily replaced. Written by Gail Louw and Jeffrey Holland, fulfilling a long held desire to pay tribute to his hero Stan Laurel, Jeffrey Holland tells this intriguing, funny and often poignant tale of friendship, love and dedication about one of Hollywood’s great film comedians. Jeffrey (Hi-de-Hi, You Rang M'Lord) stars in this one-man show about friendship, memories and a couple of remarkable lives. Set in the bedroom of a sick Oliver Hardy the show takes place during Laurel's visit to the dying man. Recounting their past success as the comedy double act Laurel and Hardy, this is a humorous and touching look at one of the great cinematic partnerships of the last century.
"I say to people, have you heard of John Cooper Clarke and if they say, yes, yeah he's an absolute genius and you just go, 'oh - ok, you've saved me a lot of time" Steve Coogan. John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original ‘people’s poet’. Today, JCC is as relevant and vibrant as ever, and his influence just as visible on today’s pop culture. Aside from his trademark ‘look’ continuing to resonate with fashionistas young and old, and his poetry included on national curriculum syllabus, his effect on modern music is huge.

Most people overlook key to weight loss higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low. Dr Robinson offers the following tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. “If getting your body in shape hasn’t work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind,” she added.
T
he key to weight loss is not what you put into your mouth, but why, US researchers have said. With 2016 just weeks away, a lot of people will make a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that two-thirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it off. However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the
emotional aspect. “There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off longterm, we need to do more than just think about what we eat, we also need to understand why we’re eating,” she noted. A recent survey of over 1,000 people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. “This may explain why so many of us struggle,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very young age, people are emotionally

attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food. “If we’re aware of it or not, we are conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but for comfort. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical’. “We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences,” she said. Studies have found a link between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a

KEEP YOUR HOME WARM & COSY!
10 tips to save on your heating bill
G
etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder
from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
