N the lead-up to the Abortion Referendum the news that one woman per week from Sligo and more than one woman from Mayo travels to England and Wales for an abortion may have come as a shock to many. Indeed the numbers may be even greater when those who provide incorrect addresses, English addresses or choose other EU locations are drawn into the equation. The information revealed that between 2008 and 2011 196 women from Sligo, 338 from Mayo and 726 from Galway travelled to the UK for an abortion. However there is more to this story. Most commentators would agree that no matter what the outcome of the forthcoming Referendum there will be no dramatic change in these statistics. The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children were told that the proposed changes in the law were dealing with a very, very narrow issue and if it were drafted correctly there would be no chance of abortion on demand if the Referendum was carried. It was also felt there would be many more X cases in Ireland were it not for the proximity of the UK. The Irish Family Planning Association reveals that according to the UK Department of Health at least 152,061 women living in Ireland have travelled to England and Wales between 1980 and 2011 for abortions. The trend actually reveals a steady drop from a peak of 6,673 in 2001 to 4,149 in 2011. While some of the drop may be due to the fact that women are opting for greater confidentiality or choosing to travel elsewhere for the terminations there is no doubt that the increasing acceptability of unwanted pregnancies is playing a part in women’s decisions. So, while the figures of one per week or greater may seem alarming statistically the gradual drop in numbers over the past decade reveals another story which deserves analysis and will, no doubt, be discussed at length in the forthcoming debates on this controversial issue.

news

St. Patrick’s weekend marred by tragedies WITH Spring and Summer ahead the issues of water safety will be to the forefront again. For two families this advice is too late with the news that two men died in separate drowning incidents on Monday. A Polish man who had been living in Ireland for a number of years died after being hit by a freak wave on a fishing trip with friends. The 55-yearold fisherman, who was married and had been living in Co Kildare, drowned when he fell off rocks into the sea at Mullaghmore Head, Co Sligo. He was with several other anglers in the area when the incident occurred. It's understood two companions had left their friend to fish further up the coast at 8am and raised the alarm when they returned to find him missing. They were able to pull his body from the water. The incident happened in an area notorious for freak waves. Local anglers tend to avoid the area. The body of the man was taken to Sligo General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. In a separate incident a body was

taken from the sea at Westport, Co Mayo. It was that of a Scottish man who had been visiting the area for the St Patrick's weekend. The man was identified later as Michael Reilly (54) from Ardrossan, North Ayrshire. Mr. Reilly, who had been travelling alone, was booked into a local B&B. He was identified from documents he had been carrying. The body was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem examination. The deaths of the two foreign nationals are in addition to the death of a Norwegian fisherman at the weekend. The body of the fisherman – who fell into the sea at Killybegs, County Donegal – was located on Sunday. Gardai described the death of the 41-year-old father of three as a tragic accident. They said he was on his way back to his trawler at 3am on Sunday morning after a night with colleagues in Killybegs. He was walking ahead of them and they believed he reached his trawler, which sails out of Hagesund, Norway, some minutes before them. But when the boat's chef went to wake him in

the morning the bunk had not been slept and the alarm was raised. His body was discovered around 1pm in the water at neighbouring Blackrock Pier. People in Westport are still coming to terms with the stabbing of local youth, Henry Newham, who was repeatedly stabbed in the Railway Walk area of the town and is still in a serious condition, though the family have been told he is doing well. His family are still puzzled over the circumstances of the attack. A spokesperson said on Monday that he was still under sedation and they didn’t know the full story until he woke up. The attack occurred just before 11 pm on Saturday night. He was rushed from Westport to hospital in Castlebar, where doctors performed surgery to remove his spleen. Meanwhile, three men in their late teens who were arrested in connection with the attack have been released by Gardai. All three were released without charge and files are being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Continued success at Knock marriage service

FORTY-FIVE years after it was founded, the Knock Marriage Service (Bureau) continues to thrive and the country’s oldest introduction service facilitated 11 marriages last year. Clearly Cupid remains smitten by the traditional-style service, which has increasingly attracted young professional women – including teachers, doctors and nurses – aged in their thirties. Recently renamed Knock Marriage Introductions, the Catholic Church service was founded by the late Father Michael Keane in 1968, leading to 910 marriages over its 45-year history.

Figures just released from the service’s 45th Annual Report reveal that in 2012 they received 1,000 telephone inquiries and 580 written queries. The applicant breakdown by gender and age showed: 69 men (aged 25-45), 29 men (46-75); 66 women (aged 25-45), 23 women (46-75). Canon Joseph Cooney, Director, said the service’s ‘proven track record’ ensured consistent levels of interest year-on-year. “I believe that a significant part of our success is that our clients feel secure throughout the introduction procedure. After we process the questionnaires we try to match them based on age, location and educational level. We also look at height too. Certainly women don’t want to be with smaller men but we have to take into account the height of their heels!” Canon Cooney said. He explained the process requires that a client must accept one of any three matches suggested and mobile phone numbers are only exchanged when agreement is reached.

Clients are not asked a direct question about their faith either, said Canon Cooney. Confirming the upsurge in thirtysomething professional women signing up to the site, Canon Cooney said the largest number of recent applicants were from Dublin, with Mayo, Galway, Cork and Waterford following. The website states that if introductions do not progress, the person who decides to opt out should inform the other person frankly of their decision and also inform the Knock office, where both parties may receive further introductions. It also confirms that applications for introductions are accepted and considered valid for one year at a cost of €150. It ensures prospective clients that their applications are ‘treated in the strictest of confidence with no address divulged by them to either person concerned in an introduction and all correspondence is forwarded by post in plain, sealed, envelopes’.

Gangs slaughter sheep for fresh meat

A

SKILLED gang of sheep slaughterers is believed to be extending its geographical area of operations following a renewed bout of activity in the Mayo/Galway area. One of the latest victims is a farmer from the Burren area, near Castlebar, who found in recent weeks that all

that remained of two of his best ewes were clumps of wool and piles of offal. The carcasses had been expertly stripped clean of meat in what was described by the farmer as ‘an expert butchering operation’. Horrified and worried farmers have

nicknamed the perpetrators ‘slaughter, skin and scarper merchants’ because of their ruthlessness and efficiency. The Burren farmer, who does not wish to be identified publicly, has reported his loss to gardaí but said he has received no word back as to how their investigation is progressing. He told the local press: “I was out one evening inspecting my hill flock when I met a man with a rifle. He had a hunting belt and carried a knife. “When I demanded to know what he was at, he told me he had the shooting rights for deer in the local forests. I told him there were no deer in the forest.” While checking his flock the following day the farmer found the remains of two ewes who ‘had been shot in the head’. The farmer maintained: “Whoever did this knows what they are at. They picked the best ewes, two year olds, to kill. They are the best from a meat point of view.” As well as Burren, Castlebar, there have been other attacks in recent times on sheep flocks in the Athenry and Turloughmore areas of Co. Galway as well as in Cavan and Monaghan.

Boyle Garda Station closed to public after 6 pm

Pyjama Day at Hopes & Dreams Montessori School

Boyle Garda Station has lost it’s 24/7 status and will now only open to the public during daylight hours - 10am - 6pm. Minister for Justice Alan Shatter confirmed that following the amalgamation of the Boyle Garda district with Castlerea, the station will only be open to the public during daylight hours. No date has been set for the proposed amalgamation which was revealed in the Dail last week but it is scheduled to happen “in the coming months this year.” There are currently 32 gardai assigned to Castlerea and 26 assigned to Boyle. Minister Shatter said that policing would still be provided on a 24/7 basis; it is just the station that will operate from 10 am - 6pm. Castlerea Garda Station will remain as direct headquarters and will open to the public on a 24 hour basis. Boyle Garda Station will support Castlerea.

Staff take on eight-week Wellness Challenge

I

T Sligo has launched an eight-week series of activities highlighting “wellness” as a vital extra dimension to the traditional image of “health and safety”. Yvonne Roache, the Institute’s Health and Safety Officer who is the prime mover in the initiative, says she hopes it will help staff and student become more health-aware by taking advantage of benefits on their own doorstep. “Here on campus we have a wealth of knowledge on the subject, great fitness facilities and some really good walks,” said Yvonne, who lives in Carney, Co Sligo. “This is our first-ever Campus Wellness Programme and staff and students across a number of our specialist Departments have been arranging events and activities to spotlight Health and Wellness.” The programme includes nutritional talks, Diabetes Ireland checks, a Stop Smoking campaign, walks in the 70 acre campus, a Healthy Eating Week, gym fit-

ness promotions, and blood and body mass index checks. But while most staff and students are able to dip in and out of the events at their leisure, 16 hardy souls are already in the throes of the most testing but perhaps most rewarding central element of the programme – the ‘IT Sligo Employee Wellness Challenge’. From February 5th to March 26, the 16 employees are involved in an intensive week-by-week programme of group and one-to-one talks and advice with a professional nutritionist, and fitness and exercise regimes under the supervision of personal trainers at the Institute’s Knocknarea Arena. And Yvonne Roache is practising what she preaches by signing up for the Challenge. Last year she discovered that she has Multiple Sclerosis and for her the Challenge is a way of getting fitter while also demystifying perceptions about MS. “People have certain images of MS

which don’t reflect the reality that many people who have it, cope with it and are able to get on with their lives and work and raise families. As a Health and Safety Officer, I am certainly not shy about talking my condition. I take the view that if bad things happen there are ways of dealing with them and getting on with life. “My condition is called Relapsing Remitting MS. I reckoned that the Staff Challenge would do me good because I feel when things are not going so well for me, the fitter my body is then the quicker I can come out of a relapse. I’m hoping to do a 5K run at the end of the programme along with the others on it.” The Staff Challenge is not about “fad” diets, muscle-pumping or one-size-fitsall, Yvonne explains. The trainers adopt a holistic approach by, among other aspects, looking at behavioural changes that are needed to sustain health eating and by matching gym activity to individual capability and goals. Nutritionist Aine Waldron in her talks with the participants emphasises that a balanced lifestyle is key to good health. “Diet and physical activity are equally important. You can’t have one without the other. They are interlinked in preventing or combating chronic diseases and obesity. It is about lifestyle change.” Aine, who operates Nutri-Mission Health and Nutrition, in Sligo says: “In life you’re going to have your good days and your bad days, and as dedicated as people are to a new lifestyle of healthy eating and fitness, some inevitably will ‘fall off the wagon’ at times. But one of the benefits of programmes such as this Staff Challenge is in recognising that, and learning how to cope and getting back on track.” Aine has a weekly blog at nutrimission.ie giving step-by-step details about the nutritional lifestyle that the Staff Challenge participants are following.

NUIG students favour right to choose OVER 70% of students voted in favour of adopting a woman’s right to abortion as official Students Union (SU) policy in a referendum which took place at NUI Galway last week. The poll, which coincided with the election of new SU officers for the coming academic year, will see the representative body adopt a ‘pro-choice’ policy for the coming year. In what is understood to have been one of the highest turnouts for a SU election in years, 2,478 students voted in favour of a pro-choice stance, with 1,118 voting against, from a total poll of 3,596 voters. The proposition will see the NUI Galway SU support the national campaign for full reproductive rights, including a woman’s right to abortion, as part of its policy for the coming year. It calls on the SU to “use every available” measure to realise a woman’s right to abortion both on campus and at a national level. Robin Potke of the NUIG Choice Society, who campaigned successfully for a yes vote, said that the death of Savita Halappanavar in Galway last October

had galvanised the students to press for a change in SU policy. Ms Halappanavar (31) died at University Hospital Galway (UHG) a week after being admitted for back pain while she was 17 weeks pregnant.

Her death generated headlines all around the world and prompted renewed calls for legislation to allow legal terminations in Ireland, in order to prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

Leitrim Rose to help children in Chernobyl

T

HIS month Leitrim’s Rose of Tralee for 2012, Niamh Flanagan, will be making a transition from the glitz and glamour of the Rose pageant in Kerry to the squalid and heartbreaking conditions of a children’s orphanage in Chernoybl. The Aughawillan lady, who won the Leitrim Rose title last year, is heading to Chernoybl next Sunday, March 24 for five days to join Adi Roche’s Chernoybl Children’s Charity. The charity cares for children too sick and too disabled to be cared for by state institutions. The children, most of whom suffer from Cerebral Palsy, are severely

impaired and because of the severity of their disability, they can’t attend local rehab centres. Although the trip will be tough on Niamh as her first time volunteering, she sees the opportunity as a privilege. Niamh said that former Leitrim Rose Brenda Stenson who volunteered over there last year has warned her about the experience and the state she will find the children in. She said she has been told that she will be crying leaving the children and will be upset seeing how they live over there. Niamh fundraised €3,000 for the orphanage and has also packed over 100 nappies, sudocream, tal-

cum powder and toys for the kids. Niamh said items like nappies that we take for granted are luxuries over there. “Kids could be in nappies for 3 weeks” at the orphanage, she explained. The orphanage caters for babies up to 18 year olds. Niamh will join 13 other roses from last year’s competition, escorts and the charity’s founder Adi Roche to go out and help the less fortunate babies, children and teenagers in Chernobyl’s children’s orphanage. To embark on the trip, Niamh had to fundraise; a fortnight ago she held a very successful Charity Car Wash in Aughawillan GAA Grounds. The day was very successful and Niamh said “the generosity of the public never ceases to amaze me.” She paid special tribute to Aughawillan Drama Group, Tesco Ballinamore, Aughawillan GAA, An Gardai Siochana, Brian Corrigan, Michael McGovern & Staff of Super Valu, Ballinamore, Des Quinn for their donations. Thanks is also extended to Colette Flanagan, Margaret Maguire & Marie Fleming for providing refreshments on the day and to Gene, Colin & Aileen Maguire, Sean Quinn, Emmet Mahon,Gerard McGovern, Micheal & Declan

Flanagan for their tremendous hard work on the day. She said “they left every car in the locality gleaming!” Prizes were sponsored by McDevitts Pharmacy, Ballinamore, and Madge & Eddie Fleming. Niamh said “I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your help and support, it means so much to me and I know that your generosity will make a big difference and bring some joy to the children that I’ll meet in Chernoybl.” With the Leitrim Rose Selection just around the corner, Niamh is also actively promoting the event and asking young ladies from around Leitrim to send in their applications. Niamh stated the experience in Leitrim and Portlaoise as well as her week in Tralee and the entire year as the Leitrim Rose has been so special. She said becoming Leitrim Rose has given her so much confidence. She added all the events gave her a chance to meet new people and make new friends. She said it was also great to get involved in Leitrim events and fundraisers. Also the glitz, glamour and escorts made it an unbelievable, unforgettable experience for any young woman!

Concerns over anti social behaviour in Leitrim estates A Fine Gael councillor has sought greater clarity in procedures for dealing with anti-social behaviour in Council estates in Leitrim. Speaking at the recent monthly Council meeting, Cllr Sean McDermott noted that the Council had a clear procedure for dealing with issues such as drug-taking in Council estates but “the means of dealing with the problems of noise and drinking seems vague.” He put forward a motion seeking a review of the current procedures in place to ensure clarity for residents of such estates. Responding to his motion a spokesperson for the Council noted that the Local Authority’s Anti-Social Behaviour Strategy 2010-2015 included reference to Noise/Disturbance, and the procedure for investigating complaints.

It was noted this procedure included verbal warnings, warning letters and, if necessary, the referral of the problem to other agencies such as the gardai. “In addition Section 108 of the Environmental Protection Agency Act 1992 provides that an individual, or a Local Authority, may seek to institute proceedings in the District Court in instances where noise presents as a nuisance,” added the spokesperson. “The Council’s legal advice in the matter is that in order to present a case for hearing in the Courts, instances of noise/disturbance must be recorded on noise monitoring equipment over a continuous period of time, and such recordings together with documentation of the alleged incidents, including witness

statements to An Garda Siochana, should form part of the Prosecution’s evidence to the Court.” It was noted that the Council endeavoured to get an amicable resolution to all reports of anti-social behaviour. “However where such resolution is not possible, the preparation of a substantive body of evidence is required in order to pursue action under the existing legislation,” he said. A discussion on anti-social behaviour also took place in Boyle Town Council last week. Concerns were expressed over anti-social behaviour at certain council houses in Boyle. Boyle Town Council heard that no tenant was ever evicted by Rosocmmon County Council on the grounds of anti-social behaviour.

Mayo and Leitrim’s low land prices

AGRICULTURAL land prices in Co. Mayo fell by 8 percent last year, bucking the trend elsewhere in the country which saw a significant upswing. According to the Irish Farmers Journal’s Agricultural Land Price Report, released last Thursday, the price of agricultural land has increased to just under €10,000 per acre nationally – its highest point in six years. Mayo is lagging this trend, but it is not alone: Seven other counties also experienced an average price decrease. Louth had the largest percentage price decrease at an eye-watering 27.6 percent, followed by Kerry at 14 percent and Galway at 9.3 percent. The average price of agricultural land in Mayo was €5,684 per acre in 2012, down 8 percent from the 2011 average of €6,180 per acre – the second lowest average in the country. Leitrim had the lowest average at €4,517 an acre, while Sligo was third-lowest at €6,446 an acre.

Nationally, the average price paid for agricultural land in 2012 was €9,954 an acre – a healthy increase of 14.3 percent on the average for 2011 at €8,708 an acre. Dublin had the highest average at €13,724/acre followed by Kilkenny at €13,203/acre and Kildare at €13,023/acre. Tipperary saw the highest percentage price increase at 40 percent, followed by Wicklow and Clare, both at 33 percent. The volume of land offered for sale in Mayo substantially increased in 2012, with 1,522 acres brought to the market – over 1,000 acres more than the 515 acres brought to market the previous year. The increased volume of land for sale is thought to be due in part to greater confidence in farming, but also to ‘an element of forced sales’. Partry was a brighter spot in Mayo’s agricultural land market last year, with 32 acres there fetching €240,000, or €7,500/acre, at public auction.

Mulherin welcomes step-down beds at Ballina hospital MAYO Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has welcomed the decision by the HSE to open step-down beds at Ballina District Hospital in order to alleviate the chronic trolley problem at Mayo General, mainly caused by delayed discharges. Deputy Mulherin said she has been informed by HSE management that the deci-

sion will be reviewed on a month by month basis depending on the situation at Mayo General which means the step-down beds are not open on a permanent basis for now. Deputy Mulherin said: "This is will go a considerable way towards resolving the overflow of patients now at Mayo General, including relieving pressure on A&E. It will help get people off trolleys and into beds for better care. It is one of a number of measures being pursued to address the problems at Mayo General. "I have been pursuing this matter with the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, local HSE and hospital management in conjunction with the Special Delivery Unit and I am very pleased with this outcome and delighted to see them working together giving a practical response to issues on the ground even with limited resources and credit should be given where it's due in that regard. It is also evidence of the Minister's commitment to try to tackle the trolley problem. "Also this clearly demonstrates the importance of Ballina District Hospital not just locally but in the proper functioning of our hospital and health system in Co. Mayo."

Keg thieves on the increase as criminals track lorries

C

RIMINALS are turning their minds to the stealing of kegs as deliveries of beer, stout and lager to pubs are increasingly being tracked by criminals, a senior garda officer has warned. Inspector Joe McKenna warned publicans last week that vigilance on their part was necessary more than ever because of the amount of kegs, both full and empty, being stolen. He told a meeting of Mayo Vintners’ Federation that steps were necessary to halt the keg theft epidemic. “Criminals are mindful of the times when deliveries are being made,” the inspector said. Kegs are being stolen shortly after being dropped off. They (criminals) are tracking the movements of the lorries. “Fresh kegs should be taken off the streets immediately. They are worth a lot of money nowadays, both for their contents and the value of the metal in the kegs. “The empties are worth money. Unscrupulous metal dealers are willing to buy the kegs. It’s a way of making money.” Manufacturers and suppliers are finding their stocks of kegs are being diminished

because of the ongoing theft situation. One major brewer, Guinness, had contacted the Garda Commissioner to highlight the matter. At the Mayo VFI meeting recently, Inspector McKenna asked publicans to keep bottles of spirits locked in a cage in a storeroom. He also advised they should keep cigarettes locked up as well and not make anything handy for the thieves. Recently, the Irish Brewers Association (IBA) issued a similar call to that made by Inspector McKenna. According to IBA executive Stephen Lynam, new kegs can cost up to €100 each. Stolen kegs are being advertised for sale in local media and on the internet, often in batches of 100 or more. The IBA estimates that up to 100,000 kegs belonging to their members went missing last year and say there’s little doubt that organised criminal gangs are involved in the racket. Beer companies are asking publicans to hold empty kegs in a secure location prior to collection and be ready to whisk full kegs off the street the moment they are delivered.

Council for the west calls on government to support Ireland West Airport

A

leading west of Ireland lobby group has called on the Government to back proposals designed to safeguard the future of Ireland West Airport, Knock. The airport has requested a €75m investment over the next five years to expand its routes and develop other aviation-related business, in a bid to secure the airport. Almost 150 people are directly employed at the airport, which supports an additional 900 jobs in the region. It also provides an annual tourism and related spend of €117m in the west.

Now the Council for the West has added its voice to the campaign for immediate investment in the airport by the Government. “The Government has recently received excellent proposals from Ireland West Airport. These proposals should be supported and we believe there should be a high-level implementation plan setting out how the Government – particularly the Departments of Finance, Enterprise, Trade and Employment; and Tourism and Sport – will can assist Ireland West Airport in securing its aviation, enterprise and regional development

objectives,” said Sean Hannick, Chairperson of the Council for the West. “We call on the Government to ensure that the proposals submitted by Ireland West Knock urgently receive the attention and the commitment which they require and deserve. The continued successful development of Ireland West Knock is central to the economic future of the region.” The Council has made its call in the context of the recent announcement of a €300m Government investment initiative to support Shannon Airport. “The Government’s decision to accelerate these measures for Shannon Airport has added urgency to Ireland West Knock’s requirement,” added Mr Hannick. “While the Council commends Shannon Airport on its success in obtaining funding which is required to secure its future, the Council urges the Government to ensure that Ireland West Knock also receives the necessary investment it requires to maximise its development potential and to secure jobs. “Shannon and Ireland West Knock compete for business. Notwithstanding this, there has been history of co-operation between the two Airports. Government policy must be developed and implemented in a way which is fair to both, so as to provide a level playing field”.

HAVE you ever wondered about life in the ‘Big Houses’ of Sligo? Have you ever thought about the people who lived on the estates and their relationship with the local landlord? Did you know some estates used to have hurling and football teams and play against others estates, lords and servants side by side? A new Sligo project ‘Hidden Histories’ will explore these different pasts of Sligo Big Houses, the background of Sligo, the fortified garrison town, and the not-always-obvious legacy of partition. Looking at the past may help us understand the present and perhaps think twice about our perceptions of the landlords and estates of Sligo. Hidden Histories was launched by Senator Susan O’Keeffe, at well known ‘Big House’ and hotel, Markree Castle. She spoke passionately about the project and ‘its value in terms of peace building and

the examining and recording of Sligo’s history’ . Hidden Histories is one of three Sligo PEACE projects managed by Sligo LEADER Partnership; these projects are funded by the PEACE lll Programme through the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund managed for the Special EU programmes Body by Sligo County Council on behalf of Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee. Kate Bell, research facilitator for the project, highlighted the work she will undertake with supporting six heritage and historical groups with their research into Sligo history. Working together, these diverse groups will join together to publish a book at the end of the project. Each Big House explored will also have an information panel installed on site. These panels will be marked on a map trail of the

sites and will be available for people to view and follow. This project is also examining the Legacy of Partition through a cross border project working with active age groups in Northern Ireland and Co. Sligo. The group will discuss their own stories and experiences of Partition, the effect it still has on themselves and their local areas. hello@westportfestival.com Garrymore Drama Group presents Brian Friel’s classic “Dancing at Lughnasa” at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 21st March at 8.00pm. Since its premier production at the Abbey in 1990, Brian Friel’s “Dancing at Lughnasa” has rapidly established itself as a modern classic in both Irish and international theatre. Set in 1936 in Ballybeg Co. Donegal, the home of the five unmarried Mundy sisters and their brother Jack, a priest recently returned from 25 years in an African leper colony, this memory play unfolds from the point of view of adult narrator Michael, then 8 years old, the illegitimate son of the youngest sister. His memories of that fateful time, centred round the festival of the Celtic god Lugh, bring into sharp focus images of love, loss, and moments of intense emotion in a play of layered meanings, conflicting rituals and family tensions. Garrymore Drama Group has been in existence since the early 1980s and is well established with many successful productions and two All Ireland Confined titles to their credit. This year they bring to life Brian Friel’s much-loved classic, in a production directed by Frankie Ralph O’Malley. Cowell launches global talent hunt

TV and music mogul Simon Cowell is to launch a global talent search online allowing people to show off remarkable skills - with video auditions on YouTube. The X Factor boss's company Syco is teaming up with the site to enable people to show off talents which may not be recognised by traditional TV shows, such as make-up artists or doing trick shots The You Generation contest - expected to launch in late March - will continue for at least a year and will seek out a different skill each fortnight with each vying for an "amazing prize". An overall winner after the first 52 weeks will be given a further reward. The contest will extend across 26 territories, taking in the UK and Ireland, the United States, Russia and much of south east Asia, with entries made simply by uploading a video, and all competing together. There are likely to be searches for talents such as TV presenting, singing and cooking over the months. Cowell is already exploring food with his new ITV show Food Glorious Food which launched this week. Cowell has been keen to harness the power of YouTube after seeing how popular performances of his shows have been on the video-sharing site. Susan Boyle, runner-up on Britain's Got Talent in 2009, had more than 500 million YouTube views for her performance on the show. And One Direction, signed up by Cowell after being formed on the 2010 X Factor, have been seen more than 800 million times on the site. A panel of experts, tailored to each twoweekly contest, will be assembled to choose the top entrants, and winners will have their efforts highlighted on the YouTube channel. Contestants have been able to audition via YouTube for Cowell's TV shows, although they have then had to take part in a live audition. His new venture will be fully online. Cowell's company said: "The channel offers people with unconventional and original talents the opportunity to have their talent recognised by the world and become the next internet star." Announcing the launch, Syco and YouTube called it "a new worldwide entertainment concept". They said You Generation would be "the first global audition process", adding that people would have "the chance to show off their outstanding skills and win amazing prizes - simply by uploading a video".

Boy, 5, racks up £1,700 iPad bill A five-year-old boy who racked up a £1,700 bill in just a few minutes on his parents' iPad has said he has learned his lesson. Danny Kitchen innocently ran up the debt by playing a game on the tablet device which automatically billed his parents, Greg and Sharon, as he progressed. His parents provided the schoolboy with a password for the game after he told them it was a free download. Despite having several emails from iTunes the next day itemising the successive £69.99 payments Danny incurred, the Kitchens dismissed them as simply an error until a call from their credit card company made them realise what had happened. Mrs Kitchen, from Bristol, told the BBC: "We were pretty distracted on Sunday with it being a family day. He'd asked my husband if he could have the passcode for a free download. My husband said no and he (Danny) insisted. He said 'Please, Dad, it's only a free one'. My husband put the iPad close to his chest, put the code in and gave him back the iPad. He continued to play for about 10 or 15 minutes because shortly after that we were due to go out so it wasn't a long period of time he was playing. "At 6am on Monday I checked my emails and I saw the repetitive emails coming through from iTunes. The first three were £69.99. It all looked like it was the same

thing, I presumed it was a mistake. It was only when the credit card company called to say were these 19 transactions normal? I said 'No, it's not'." She added: "He (Danny) was very upset when he realised what he had done. His brothers and sisters were telling him off, but of course he didn't know what he did he's only five. To be honest, I'm not sure how he did it." Mrs Kitchen said Apple, the company which owns and runs iTunes, had been "fantastic" in helping them get a refund for the money. Describing how he came to rack up

the eye-watering bill, Danny said: "I just clicked on it because it said it was free. I gave it (the iPad) to Dad, he put the password in, and the next day it cost the money." Asked what he had learned from the saga, Danny replied: "Not to do it again." But it does not appear he will get the chance. His father said: "I have now barred the iPad from any more downloads, so that's the end of that." Martyn Landi, writer with British-based Apps magazine, said parents concerned about their children running up similar bills should turn off "inapp purchases" on the iPad's settings tab.

All-male gaming 'just a stereotype'

L-R: Mark Bamford, Callum Goold, Rosie Ball, Sophia George, Kristian Francis

A young computer games designer has called for more women to follow her into the industry. Sophia George, 22, won a Bafta "Ones to Watch" award last year and has since co-

founded Swallowtail Games. Launching her first game, Tick Tock Toys, the Abertay University graduate said she wants to inspire young women to create fun, accessible games for people of all ages.

"The popular stereotypes of gamers just being young men couldn't be more wrong, but they still persist despite around half of all gamers being female," she said. "What's really worrying though is that this male-dominated idea is so pervasive, and it influences what families think about games and what young women think as they grow up and make decisions about their careers. "I just hope that the release of Tick Tock Toys will help show young women that they can get into the games industry and that they too can create the games they love to play." Ms George and her team won Abertay University's Dare to be Digital game design contest in 2011 and founded her company late last year with the help of a £25,000 award from the institution. Tick Tock Toys is described as a familyfriendly puzzle game for the iPhone and iPad. Professor Louis Natanson, who leads computer games education at the university, said: "Through initiatives like our game design competition Dare to be Digital and the huge games festival we run in Dundee every year, we're introducing thousands of school children to the idea of creating their own games. "Strong female role models like Sophia are an important part of that."

Iran battles plague of giant mutant rats with team of snipers

G

iant ‘mutant’ rats are being hunted down by a team of snipers in Iran. In scenes which sound like something out of an arcade game or sci-fi movie, a team of army snipers in the capital is trying to deal with the rodents at night by using rifles equipped with infrared scopes, according to reports, with around 2,205 rats apparently killed so far. Although Tehran has had a decades-long struggle with rats, the problem seems to have grown to epic proportions. Rodents – estimated to number millions – have been flushed out of their nests by melting snow and some reportedly weigh as much as 5kg. Authorities have imported 45tonnes of rat poison but have had to ramp up their efforts. Tehran city council environment adviser Ismail Kahram told Iranian news website Qudsonline.ir these rats ‘seem to have had a genetic mutation, probably as a result of radiations and the chemical used on them’. ‘They are now bigger and look different,’ he said, according to the International Business Times. ‘These are changes that normally take millions of years of evolution. They have jumped from 60g to 5kilos, and cats are now smaller than them.’ Dr David Baker, laboratory animal veterinarian at Louisiana State University, told The Huffington Post it’s unlikely the rats got super-sized as the result of a mutation.

‘Nearly all genetic mutations identified across the field of biology are harmful and confer a disadvantage to the species rather than an advantage,’ he said. ‘It’s not like in the sci-fi movies.’ However, he pointed out that there are several species of giant rats found around the world that can achieve the sizes described by Mr Kahram. This is because their growth plates don’t fuse after puberty, Dr Baker explained – even common black rats can get very large. ‘During the Middle Ages, black rats in Europe reportedly grew large enough – and children were small enough – to carry off babies,’ he added. ‘Those had to have been some big rats.’ The situation is like a warped bonus round of arcade game Big Buck Hunter – except the only ones scoring points off this emergency seem to be the media. The Times in this country took aim at Tehran’s ‘experience when it comes to [exterminating]… its political opponents’, while The Times of Israel made a Princess Bride reference in its coverage. Whether Tehran’s rats are mutated or not, some scientists have reported that certain rat populations are becoming resistant to poison. Last year, British researchers published findings that estimated three quarter of rats in west England were resistant to rodenticide.

The only person I give a s*** bout is the other driver, bless him.’ The Aston Martin’s owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘I was filling up and then I saw the car coming towards me. ‘She drove out of the petrol station onto the roundabout, lost it, and came over the kerb and came straight into the car. My car moved into the pump and bumped the pump off.’ He added: ‘It will be a write-off. They won’t fix that.’ Powered by a 6-litre V12 engine, the 510bhp DBS is capable of 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 190mph. Prices started from £180,000 but the model was discontinued last year.

Chinese ‘told to swap chopsticks for knives and forks’ to save trees

CHOPSTICKS in the wrong hands are a danger to good table manners, but it is their threat to the environment that is causing a stir in China amid claims restaurants may be told to replace them with knives and forks. A staggering 80billion disposable sets of the eating implement are now created in the country each year and demand is putting a heavy strain on the nation’s forests. Now Bo Guangxin, chairman of the Jilin Forestry Industry Group, has asked people to use them less sparingly by carrying ‘their own tablewear’. And it was also reported that he has gone as far as to suggest that restaurants offer metal knives and forks instead. The cutlery debate is one which has raged over Chinese meals in Britain for decades. Mr Bo told delegates at the National People’s Congress that ‘consumption habits must change’. He said it takes 20million 20-year-old trees every year just to meet demand. It is not the first time the issue of chopsticks and the environment has been raised. In 2006 the government introduced a five per cent levy on disposable chopsticks but had little success in reducing their use. And in 2010, Greenpeace created a sculpture with 80,000 pairs to bring attention to the problem. The exact origins of chopsticks are unclear but they are thought to have been in use in China for up to 3,000 years.

Orange Flour for Gluten-free Bread

D

URING the processing of fruit and vegetables one third is discarded as ‘waste’. The waste or by-product can be described as the core, pips and peel of the fruit or vegetable. This waste can be costly for the manufacturer to dispose of and it may

also have hazardous effects on the environment. Research has shown that a high quantity of nutrients such as dietary fibre and bio-actives are present in these by-products, thus the full potential of the fruit or vegetable is not fulfilled. For example, orange pomace, a by-product from the smoothie and juice industry, has proven to have good nutritional attributes; it is low in fat (2% dry matter) and high in dietary fibre (40% dry matter) and has the potential to be used as a food ingredient. Researchers at Teagasc Food Research Centre and University College Cork have been looking in to possible uses for this discard, for example, the use of orange flour in gluten-free bread formulations.

Presently in Ireland, approximately one in a hundred people suffer from coeliac disease. Coeliac disease can be explained as an autoimmune reaction to the prolamin fraction of the gluten protein, which causes damage to the villi in the small intestine. The only treatment for coeliac disease is lifelong avoidance of foods containing wheat, barley, spelt, rye and some oats. Many gluten-free products available on the market are calorie dense, lacking in flavour, mouthfeel and nutrients, and are costly to buy. Gluten-free formulations Dr Eimear Gallagher, Teagasc Food Research Centre, explains: “Developing gluten-free formulations can be challenging for the cereal technologist, as the struc-

ture-building protein (i.e., gluten) is absent. In the present study, a response surface design was created to statistically calculate the optimal level of orange pomace addition, water addition and ideal proofing time to produce an optimal bread formulation. This study investigated the effects of these three factors in different combinations on bread parameters such as loaf volume, crumb structure, crumb colour, texture, microstructure, nutritional and sensory properties and the optimised samples were assessed using sensory panellists.” “Sensory panellists scored the bread favourably with respect to appearance, flavour, texture and overall acceptability,” says Norah O’Shea, a PhD student of Dr Gallagher. “The inclusion of orange pom-

ace as a novel structure-building and nutritious ingredient in a gluten-free formulation was illustrated in this study. Using response surface methodology as a tool, successfully created bread with favourable baking characteristics and enhanced dietary fibre. Orange pomace proved to be a viable, low cost food by-product for improving the physical and nutritional characteristics of glutenfree breads,” explains Dr Gallagher. “The addition of this ingredient is not limited to gluten-free bread; it has potential to be used in both gluten-containing and gluten-free breads and confectionary,” adds Dr Gallagher. The orange pomace was kindly supplied to the project by Wild Orchard, Hospital, Co Limerick.

T

HE majority of the money, some €397,000, is to be clawed back by the Commission because of weaknesses in Ireland's Early Retirement Scheme and Young Farmers' Installation Scheme. It is believed that the Commission was highly critical of weaknesses of part of the Early Retirement Scheme in which agricultural advisers provided declarations or certificates vouching that the farmer had farmed for 10 years preceding the farm transfer and that the transferee had a specific number of years experience in farming. However the agricultural advisers did not provide any documentation or information to support the claims and so they could not be verified by the Department of Agriculture. In relation to the Young Farmers' Installation Scheme, it is believed that the Commission was unhappy that objectives contained in the young farmer's business plan were not always measurable and so compliance with the business plan could not be verified. Almost €200,000 is being clawed back because of "known errors" found by the Commission during the financial clearance for 2010, while a

further €30,000 is to be paid for non-reporting of interest on debts. However, Ireland's penalty for infringements of the CAP rules pale in comparison to the bills being sent to other European member states. The Commission is claiming back a total of €414m of agricultural funding unduly spent by 22 members states. WEAKNESSES Over €110m is being clawed back from Britain for weaknesses in its Land Parcel Identification and Geographic Information Systems (LPIS-GIS) in England, as well as for problems with applications, administrative cross checks and on-thespot controls for its area aid payments.Italy must pay back over €48m for infringements in cross compliance, including poor control of several statutory management requirements (SMRs), three undefined good agricultural and environmental conditions (GAECs) and incorrect application of sanctions. Spain must also pay back €40.6m for shortcomings in the management and control of export refunds.Among the other members states' bills include Poland (€34m), France (€29m) and Romania (€12.5m).

ackson Engineering (Castlebar) Ltd are now an Authorised Treatment Facility where the public can bring end of life vehicles for safe disposal. Vehicles normally reach the end of their lives either due to age or because of damage, or DOE failures. To prevent vehicles being abandoned or illegally dumped, the owners of intact end of life vehicles must deposit such vehicles at an appropriately permitted or licensed authorised treatment facility (ATF). Inappropriate disposal of end of life vehicles causes a threat to the environment because of the hazardous materials contained in the car/van such as lead acid batteries, lubricating oil, coolant, brake fluid and catalytic converters, all of which must be disposed of safely in order to prevent pollution. By depositing your vehicle at an authorised treatment facility you cannot be charged, if you are the registered owner of that vehicle and the vehicle is intact. Please remember to bring the vehicle registration documents with you. The operator is obliged to issue the registered owner with a certificate of destruction which details are recorded on the National Vehicle and Driver File, maintained by the Dept of Transport Tourism and Sport. ESIGNED to provide more comfort, performance and versatility, John Deere’s 5E Series three-cylinder utility tractors will be available from this spring with a new John Deere designed cab. A 5055E model was shown for the first time in the UK at LAMMA 2013, and in Ireland at the FTMTA Farm Machinery Show 2013. The 5055E, 5065E and 5075E models from 55 to 75hp (97/68 EC rating) can be ordered with two new cab options, equipped with either basic roof-mounted heater/ventilation outlets and controls or a higher specification air conditioning and heating system. The cabs also feature opening front, rear and side windows for extra visibility when required. An additional new feature is a digital instrument panel, as featured on the bigger 5M Series tractors from 70 to 100hp. All three models feature a John Deere PowerTech M Tier III engine, providing good fuel economy and low emission levels, and an open centre hydraulic system with independent pumps. A

single rear SCV is operated by a dedicated lever as standard. Additional options include a second rear or mid-mounted SCV, operated by a joystick control. The synchronised nine forward/three reverse inline transmission follows an H pattern and can be shifted on the move via side-shift levers within the range. A standard 540rpm pto operates at a rated engine speed of 2400rpm, while the 540E economy version runs at 1700 engine rpm. The tractors can be fitted with a choice of two mechanical self-levelling or non self-levelling loaders, with lift capacities of either 873 or 989kg to a maximum lift height of 3.38m. Rear lift capacity is 1.8 tonnes at the hitch balls. John Deere 5E Series tractors are suitable for a range of customers including smaller livestock or mixed farms, speciality growers and parttime farmers or private landowners, as well as the commercial groundscare market. Prices of the new models and cab option are still to be confirmed.

PLANTS require nutrients for healthy growth, and of these nutrients, phosphorus is very important. However, in agricultural systems, the amount of phosphorus that is available to the plant rapidly decreases after the farmer applies it to the field. This occurs because phosphorus interacts with soil material at the soil surface. Phosphorus can then be washed away into streams and local water-bodies, which can have harmful effects on the environment. Teagasc researchers at Johnstown Castle have been investigating the ability of earthworms to reduce this accumulation at the soil surface, since earthworms have a substantial effect on the soil by redistributing and mixing material. “Earthworms are classified into three groups, those that live in the litter layer at the surface, those that live below ground, and those that produce semi-permanent vertical burrows. By feeding on material on the soil surface, earthworms can mix phosphorus present at the surface with soil below the surface,” explains Dr Rachel Creamer.

An experiment was conducted to investigate how earthworms redistribute phosphorus and how plant communities assimilate redistributed phosphorus. To replicate this accumulation at the surface, two soils with contrasting phosphorus concentrations were used. The upper soil (1 cm) was approximately seven times greater in phosphorus concentration than the lower soil (30 cm). Plant communities (grass-only or grass, forb and legume communities) were planted and established for six months before earthworms were introduced. Following a further nine months, the experiment was deconstructed and divided into different layers for laboratory analysis. “This experiment showed that earthworms promoted a more even distribution of phosphorus by removing this nutrient from the soil surface (0 – 1 cm depth range). Furthermore, it was shown that more phosphorus was assimilated by plants in the presence of a grass, forb and legume community compared to a grass-only community,” explains Dr Creamer.

IFA President John Bryan and a delegation of the National Chairmen from the main commodities will be in Brusselsthis week for the next round of crucial talks on CAP Reform. John Bryan said these reforms are very damaging for Irish agriculture, and the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney must reject the most negative aspects of Commissioner Ciolos’ proposals and secure a deal that works for active productive farmers in Ireland. “As the proposals stand, 80,000 farmers would lose over €250m from their Single Farm Payment. This will result in income losses of between 30% and 50% for tens of thousands of farm families totally undermining their viability.” John Bryan said IFA remains opposed to flattening and regionalisation or a mandatory minimum payment. He reminded Minister Coveney of what he said in the Farmers Journal two weeks ago: ‘I have not proposed a mandatory minimum payment within countries’. Mr Bryan said forcing a mandatory minimum payment on Ireland would completely negate the outcome suggested by the Minister under his approximation model, and any benefits that could accrue from a flexible greening option would be eroded. The IFA President said a minimum payment would take money from productive

farmers and redistribute it to inactive farmers who produce little. “This is unfair and unacceptable. IFA is insisting that monies available for re-distribution are targeted at active farmers with low payments, using objective criteria such as stocking rates and the option of coupling.” Mr Bryan said the Minister must also commit 50:50 co-financing for the next Rural Development programme for the next seven years to support vulnerable regions and vulnerable sectors. The IFA President will be joined in Brussels by the Chairmen of the Livestock, Dairy, Rural Development, Sheep and Grain Committees.

IFA say OPW moves on Shannon water levels step in right direction IFA Floods Project Team Chairman Michael Silke has said that the announcement by the Minister with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes, to lower the levels of the Shannon by 4 inches (100 mm) is a step in the right direction. Speaking following a meeting with the OPW in Athlone yesterday, Michael Silke said that the main problem with the River Shannon over the past number of years has been the recurrence of summer flooding, which has had a devastating impact on farming in the Shannon callows. “The fact that a number of bodies have a say on the levels in the Shannon such as ESB and Wa-

terways Ireland has led to a situation where water levels were kept artificially high and when heavy rain occurred in summer this has led to serious flooding.” The IFA Floods Project Chairman acknowledged the OPW efforts in securing this reduction, mainly with ESB, but he said more needs to be done. Michael Silke said, “IFA has pointed out that water levels at the Athlone weir need to be lowered thus releasing water in advance of heavy rainfall. We will be monitoring the impact of this reduction and will continue to press for further action so as to reduce the incidence of flooding”.

Springtime Car Care

25

Because we feel the effects of winter more harshly than summer, we go to extra lengths to protect ourselves with coats and hats and gloves.

M

ost of us make sure that our cars are ready for the onslaught of frigid winter weather too. We make sure we have snow tires, an ice scraper and deicer. However, in these milder months we can shed our heavy and restrictive coats and hats and take life easy. We also tend to be more lax with our car care too. Remember, your car needs protection and routine maintenance year-round, no matter what the temperature. Your engine is effected by extremes of temperature. Don't think that it isn't hard on the engine when you sit idling in a traffic jam with the air conditioner blasting away inside. The first reason to keep up a maintenance schedule is to save yourself money in the long run. If you have a newer car in order to keep the warranty in effect you need to have it serviced according to your manufacturers recommended schedule. If your car is older and out of warranty you need to be more vigilant. It's up to you to make a service schedule for your car.

Make a checklist and keep track of the following items;

change businesses check belts, hoses, fluid levels, tires, etc.

Oil: This should be changed every 3,000 miles. If your car is "using" oil as the saying goes, check it every other time you fill up. Carry an extra quart of oil in the trunk. Along with an oil change most "speedy" oil

Antifreeze: Have your cars heating and cooling system checked at least yearly. You want to make sure you have adequate temperature protection, summer and winter. Air filter: This should be checked at the same time you have your oil changed. A clogged air cleaner can really slow down your engines performance. Brakes: If you notice any squealing of your breaks have

them checked as soon as possible. It's much cheaper to replace worn pads than it is to have to replace expensive rotors if they become worn. Tyres: The air pressure is usually checked at the same time you have your oil changed. You should also have the tires rotated on a regular basis, this can really prolong their life. Battery: Batteries are sealed units now. Have the battery checked at least once a year. Following these tips all year round will help you keep you car in top running order.

Raw Food Nutritional Coaching: The Latest Trend in Raw Food Living By Megan Fennell

W

hile the raw food movement was once considered trendy, many have discovered the amazing benefits of this lifestyle. With health issues plaguing our country, many people have transformed their lives by adopting a raw food lifestyle and literally reversing diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, and chronic digestive problems just to name a few. Some choose to eat a 100% raw food diet, while others deem it practical to consume raw food at a more moderate level. Whatever the preference and no matter what “diet” one chooses, the one common factor all experts agree on is this: We all need more raw food such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds in our diet! The latest trend in the raw movement The latest trend in the raw movement is Raw Food Nutritional Coaching. Raw food coaching is specifically designed to give people the

information and support they need by learning how to adopt the lifestyle and make lasting changes that can positively impact their health. Many diets don’t work well because folks lack support and one on one coaching to help them stay motivated, continue learning and addressing underlying issues which keep them from achieving success. It might seem simple enough to start adding more raw food such as fruits and vegetables to your daily diet, yet so many people don’t eat enough, get bored, or don’t know how to make raw food interesting. For the most part, our minds have been trained to cook and prepare food using traditional methods. Raw Food Nutritional Coaching provides all the essential information to make transitioning to raw food easy, fun and healthy. More often than not, many think of raw food as nothing but a plate of veggies with ranch dip dressing. Surprisingly, incredible foods can be made from using the four basic food groups of the plant based variety: fruits, vegetables, nuts

addiction counselling • Alcohol • Drug & Substance Abuse • Smoking • Gambling • Overeating • Addictive Sexual Behaviours • Addictive Compulsive Habits and seeds. Favourite foods such as pizza, veggie burgers, pâté’s, desserts and soups are just some of the recipes raw foodies enjoy on a daily basis. Once the basic raw food skills are mastered, the recipes and ideas are endless! Raw Food Nutritional Coaching helps to restructure the “recipe bank” and bring out the creative chef inside of all us. With the help of a trained Raw Food Nutritional Coach, making raw foods will become second nature.

We give a personal guarantee that we will get to the root cause of your problem, and we are totally committed to helping our clients achieve their goals.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE

Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process

A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.

A Loss Assessor will:

• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf

Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

White & Associates

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company.

• Public Loss Assessors • Independent Claim Estimators • Property Damage Insurance Consultants

There are always grey areas Claims assessing is not an exact science and there are many instances where there is no absolute answer to the way a claim for a particular item should be settled. Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. LOSS ASSESSORS charge a fee agreed with you in advance, for the work undertaken ON YOUR BEHALF

When should I appoint my Loss Assessor?

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?

The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims

Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your

The way a claim is prepared and presented if every bit as important as the way in which it is negotiated and settled. You therefore need to appoint a LOSS ASSESSOR as soon as you realise that you have a claim. DON’T WAIT until things start to go wrong – when the Insurance Company’s LOSS ADJUSTER tells you that you are not entitled to claim for something which you were convinced forms part of your claim – or when the LOSS ADJUSTER tries to reduce the amount you are claiming.
