Local communities to pay for road maintenance I
N what must be regarded as a shock to hard-pressed communities across the northwest comes the news that they are being asked to contribute up to half the cost of repairs to their roads, as part of a State-wide scheme being
promoted by the Government. Under a pilot programme announced by Minister for State Alan Kelly within the past few days the Government is providing €10.6 million which has been matched by almost €4 million of private money.
The announcement follows comments from Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar in March that no regional or local road improvements will take place for “the next couple of years”. The news may give rise to concern
in Sligo where the council at present contributes the least amount nationwide of the road tax fund or other “own resources” for the upkeep of roads. Continued on Page 2

hanks to Leitrim Development Company, it's all systems go for talented young garden designer, Leonie Cornelius from Fivemilebourne, Co. Leitrim. Her show garden for the prestigious national gardening show Bloom In The Park, has just received Leader funding to ensure it goes ahead. "It's busy busy busy for me now", says Leonie Cornelius, "My building team and myself are working against the clock now to ensure everything is perfect for the judges when Bloom 2013 begins on Wednesday 29th May". Leonie Cornelius is a qualified garden designer and interior architect who runs Blume Design House (www.blume.ie). In 2012 she came to national attention, winning the RTE SuperGarden competition for designing a family garden. This was followed by a prestigious gold medal and Best in Category award at Bloom In the Park, Dublin. This year she was the garden design expert on RTE television show ‘Today’ with Dáithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane. Her regular
fortnightly slot featured her own designs and plantings based on wild nature and beautiful architecture. Leonie's show garden for Bloom next month has a gorgeous title - "A Love Letter to the West" based on the beauty and spirit of the West. It is modern yet stylishly natural, with a dramatic scorched timber garden hut and beautiful natural planting. After Bloom, "A Love Letter to the West" will be moving back to Leitrim so everyone will get a chance to see it and enjoy its beauty. Tom Lavin, CEO of Leitrim Development Company is very supportive of the project, saying, “Leitrim Development Company (LDC) is delighted to support Leonie Cornelius of Blume Garden Design with the development and expansion of her business. Leonie came to us with a strong proposal to grow her business and client base over the next five years. Leonie has a unique style, approach and talent and this is evident in her success to date. "When assessing projects for approval
the Board of LDC takes into consideration a number of factors including innovation; sustainability; value for money; job creation and the social and economic impacts for the local area. The Company feels that Leonie’s project represents all of those factors in abundance. "Leonie’s garden design for Bloom 2013 takes inspiration from Leitrim’s sloping meadows as well as the county’s unique heritage and style. This is a unique way of promoting Leitrim’s beautiful landscape to a wider audience.” This project received grant aid from the Leitrim Development Company Rural Development Programme (LEADER). Leonie is effusive in her thanks to LDC, contractor Paul Taylor from Gorteen, her building team and her other supporters, including Horkans who are supplying her with the enormous number of plants needed for a successful show garden.

Communities asked to pay for road maintenance Continued from front page According to official figures, Sligo’s contribution was just 9% of the funding required for roads. Just ahead was Roscommon at 12%, with Longford (15%), Offaly (15%) and Donegal (16%). These are some of the councils seemingly reluctant to contribute more of the road tax fund or other “own resources” to the upkeep of their roads. Speaking this week, Mr Kelly said the new Government pilot scheme was extending nationally arrangements which were already in place in a number of
local authorities. Under these arrangements businesses, local chambers of commerce and even individuals either contribute labour or finance to road maintenance. “We have got to be realistic we do not have the same amount of funding as previous years”, Mr Kelly told RTE’s Morning Ireland . Local authorities have already been told €42 million previously earmarked for road improvements could be switched to road maintenance this year. Local communities are being asked to identify which road repair schemes they

might consider assisting, either through the provision of direct labour or by financing the repairs. While figures of up to 50 per cent have been mentioned Mr. Kelly said the usual contribution where such schemes have happened in the past was about 20 percent of the cost being provided by the community either in works or in cash. This issue of road maintenance is pertinent at the moment, of course, since after a series of long and wet winters with flooding and freezing conditions many of the West’s regional and local roads are in a very poor condition.

Countdown to Ballina Lions “Race the Ras” fund-raiser
J
At Rás launch: Bernard Brogan, Mattie Coleman (Organiser) David Brady and Declan Darcy
UST a few days left before the Race the Ras Charity Cycle and Ballina Lions Club’s fund-raiser to raise funds for three charities – Breast Cancer Research, Multiple Sclerosis and Cystic Fibrosis. Members and friends will cycle 145 km from Naas to Skerries this weekend as part of the fund-raising effort. Cheques will be presented to the three chosen charities in Skerries at the conclusion of the Ras on Sunday, 26th May. Cystic Fibrosis is Ireland’s most common life-threatening inherited disease. CF affects the glands, damaging many organs including the lungs, pancreas, the digestive tract and the reproductive system. Funds raised from this event are required to build the much-needed five-bedroom MS Respite Centre at Woodhaven,
Sea Road, Sligo. This building will provide a spacious treatment facility and residential accommodation in a scenic location for people in the North West with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions, their families and friends. All donations will be greatly accepted. Funds can be transferred to the following bank account: AIB Bank, Pearse St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. Account No: 03456043; Sort Code: 937079. Further information can be obtained from Oliver Murphy (087) 2441605, Mattie Coleman or any member of Ballina Lions Club. Last year the club raised over €20,000 for Aware and Local Charities in the same sponsored cycle. This year they are endeavouring to help these worthy causes, so the support of the public would be much appreciated.
1 in 4 Irish people diagnosed with Hypertension
A
nationwide consumer survey, commissioned for the World Hypertension Day 2013 public awareness campaign, launched on Friday last revealed that 1 in 4 (24%) Irish people have been diagnosed with hypertension. Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure and is a common cause of stroke and heart attack. The survey findings also detailed that just 6% of Irish people are aware that hypertension usually has no symptoms. This is unsurprising since 48% of respondents with hypertension were diagnosed
while visiting their medical practitioner for a different complaint. The survey also highlighted that only 1 in 3 people (32%) actually know their personal blood pressure reading. Medical Director of the Irish Heart Foundation, Dr Angie Brown commented at the launch of this year’s World Hypertension Day, “The only way to know if you have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is to have it checked. Even if you feel well and healthy, you could still have hypertension which is a silent risk factor for stroke and heart attack. If left unchecked and
unmanaged, hypertension can cause narrowing and blockage of the arteries leading to heart attack, stroke and kidney damage. The good news is that once detected, hypertension can be effectively managed through lifestyle changes such as being a healthy weight, being active and consuming less salt, less calories and less alcohol. In some cases doctors will recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and medication to manage the condition.” To mark World Hypertension Day (May 17th), the Irish Heart Foundation has created a dedicated webpage where the public can find out more about this chronic condition – www.irishheart.ie/hypertensi on. The Irish Heart Foundation also coordinated a free blood pressure check road show which visited Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Galway throughout the week and today (17 May) visits Dublin’s Blanchardstown Centre until 2pm. Shay Byrne, Radio One DJ and Ireland’s World Hypertension Day ambassador, said, “Your blood pressure can be
affected by so many factors such as your lifestyle, your diet, your weight and how much exercise you do. It’s important to know what your numbers are and if they are healthy. Remember healthy blood pressure equals a healthy heart beat.” The survey findings also noted that Irish people get their blood pressure checked quite regularly with 77% having checks in the last 12 months; just over 53% have their blood pressure checked once a year or less.
Key Stats: 24% Irish people diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) 6% know that hypertension usually has no symptoms 48% people diagnosed with hypertension presented with unrelated symptoms 32% know their blood pressure 77% Irish people have had their blood pressure checked in the last year 53% have their blood pressure checked once a year or less 7-11 months average time span between blood pressure checks for Irish people

The Secret Life of the Shannon
Major new television series explores the wildlife of Ireland’s great river BATS, squirrels and the humble Irish pike all along the Shannon basin are getting set for the Hollywood treatment in a ground-breaking documentary to hit our screens in the coming weeks. With technology previously used in Christopher Nolan's Inception, a small Irish film company has captured an intimate portrait of Irish wildlife in never before seen slow motion detail. Snapping kingfishers and dragonflies at 1000 frames per second, the twopart documentary to be shown on RTÉ uncovers surprising secrets about the private lives of Ireland's wildlife. Scored by Ronan Ó Snodaigh of Kila, and shot around Athlone, Clonmacnoise, Roscommon, Leitrim, Portumna, Longford, Tipperary, Lough Allen, Lough Derg and Lough Ree, the series reveals new animal behaviour, showing for the first time water bats hunting at night and remarkable underwater footage of the mating dance of Shannon’s great predator, the pike. The elusive kingfisher is shown hunting underwater and slowed down by 40 times is seen in all its vivid colour and grace. Wicklow film-makers Crossing the Line hit the international stage last year with an Emmy nomination for their film about tigers in India and are currently filming gorillas in the Congo for the BBC – but they are delighted to be bringing it all back home for the Secret Life of the Shannon. “We have filmed on seven continents and honed our techniques and technology over the past 20 years,” says camera man and director John Murray. “So it's great to be bringing all that knowledge back to the banks of the Shannon, where we've found just as much mystery and beauty as anywhere around the world.” Emmy-award winning wildlife presenter Colin Stafford-Johnson, who also got the Emmy nod last year, explored the little-known islands, lakes and tributaries of the Shannon over two years, paddling his canoe to discover the teeming life of our largest river. The two-part film follows the river from dawn to dusk through four seasons and captures the changing moods and atmosphere of the river – as well as the acrobatic antics of our red squirrels, magnificent whooper swans ending their migration and the exquisite orange tipped butterfly. The filmmakers also gain access to a series of remote places few ever experience – shooting high in the tree canopy for weeks following the intimate goings-on of a little egret colony as parent birds brood their young in a giant nesting platform some 30 feet in the air. Broadcast as part of the RTÉ Goes Wild Season - a month long season of wildlife themed programmes on RTÉ, the Secret Life of the Shannon is set to cast a whole new light on the trials, struggles and surprising domestic dramas of Ireland's rich riverside wildlife. ‘The Secret Life of the Shannon’ will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 at 6.30pm. on 26th May & 2nd June 2013. It consists of 2 x 1 hour episodes.

Play to recapture Ballina WW1 days
T
HE centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 is to be remembered in Mayo in the autumn of 2014. Several hundred from the county died in
the war, and countless others were injured in trench warfare on the battle fields of the Somme, Flanders, Ypres, Gallipoli, etc. Many had enlisted with the Connaught Rangers. Today the Mayo fallen are remembered and named in the wonderful Mayo Peace Park in Castlebar. Over 200,000 Irishmen fought in the war, and approximately 30,000 died. Now plans are being made for the staging of a specially written commemorative play to honour the memory and the times of some of those men and women and their families, their neighbours and the social conditions that prevailed between 19141918. The play, by Terry Reilly, who has written extensively about the First World War, will be performed by Ballina’s celebrated Riverside Theatre Group under its highly experienced director Ray Collins. The play will track the lead into the war, the ups and downs of life during the conflict at home and overseas, the
Easter Rising and the ending of the confrontation in November 1918. Author Terry Reilly said the play will deal with many aspects of local life during the period. “It will be a mix of sadness, fun, tears, music and song, and hopefully the narrative will lead to a better understanding of the motives of those from the region who went to war, and in many cases paid with their lives,” he said. Award winning Director Ray Collins, whose connection with local amateur dramatics extends over a lifetime, said he was very excited at what would be a challenging undertaking. “Happily, we have great talent in the town and area and I am looking forward to casting new and old faces for this historical production,” he said. The play will open its run in Ballina, and the author and director say they are most anxious that as many as possible will share in a unique learning experience, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Over €1m in new funding for Ireland West Airport JUST over a week ago Ireland West (Knock) Airport’s founder, Monsignor Horan was honoured for his contribution to the aiport project. The celebrations coincided with the announcement of major capital and marketing funding which should help secure the future of the airport. An announcement last week by John O’Mahony TD of €650,000 in capital funding for essential works at the airport was preceded by Minster for State Michael Ring announcing last week that €420,000 was available to market the airport’s tourism potential. Minister Ring also announced a new tourism action plan for the west. Mr O’Mahony, who is chairman of the IWAK Study Group (IWAKS), established some months ago at the request of Taoiseach Enda Kenny, was speaking after the group’s second meeting, held at the weekend. “Since the first meeting of IWAKS just over three weeks ago, it was evident that progress has been made on a substantial work programme which the group has identified as being necessary. Included in this programme is to determine the role of the airport in the region and how it can support sectors such as enterprise and tourism,” John O’Mahony said. “I am also delighted to able to confirm that additional capital funding of over €650,000 will be provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport for essential capital works at the airport,” he added He also confirmed that the group will now commission a study on specific elements of required works which will

help secure the future of the airport. Tourism potential In another funding announcement, Minister Ring said he was delighted to confirm new ‘marketing campaigns’ to increase British and European tourism numbers through the airport. The €420,000 fund includes a €340,000 campaign in Britain, targeting the main catchment areas around airports where there are direct flights to Knock. There is also €60,000 promoting the Milan to Knock route and €20,000 promoting the Barcelona route. “This is a very significant year for Irish
tourism with events for The Gathering taking place throughout Ireland. Recently published overseas visit figures for the first quarter of 2013 were very impressive showing growth of over 7 per cent. These measures will help ensure that this positive momentum is maintained in terms of overseas visitors to the west of Ireland,” said Michael Ring. The promotion of the recently announced Wild Atlantic Way as well as the harnessing of legacy projects from The Gathering have also been identified under the remit of the new tourism action plan.

GAA stars get behind Ireland West Airport WHILE Ireland West Airport received some good funding news last week they were also happy to announce that five of the best known GAA stars in Ireland will join forces as ambassadors for the airport this coming summer. The five players, who represent counties from the region, are Alan Dillon from Mayo, Michael Meehan from Galway, Karl Lacey and Michael Murphy from Donegal and Dessie Dolan from Westmeath. The players will be the face of a new marketing campaign titled ‘Supporting Your Community’ which will be rolled out across various media channels throughout the summer season showcasing the important role Ireland West Airport Knock plays for the regions in which it serves. You can check out their first video here. The airport employs over 125 people from around the region, supports 900 additional jobs and contributes a tourism spend of over €110m to the wider region. This summer the airport will have flights to over 25 international destinations including exciting new services to Malaga with Ryanair and Palma Majorca with Sunway as well as increased flights from both London Luton and Stansted. Karl Lacey, Donegal GAA star and current Player of the Year, speaking at the launch of the airport’s summer schedule said: “When the airport approached me about the ambassadorial role, I had no hesitation in accepting. As a frequent user of the airport I can see first hand the importance and invaluable role the airport plays for
the region and it’s a great asset for people living in Donegal and the North West region, providing employment, connectivity to over 25 destinations and so convenient, only a little over an hour down the road. I’m delighted to play my part in supporting the airport in this regard.” Commenting at the launch of the summer schedule, Donal Healy, Marketing manager of Ireland West Airport Knock said: “We are delighted to have Karl, Michael and the other GAA lads as ambassadors for the airport. These players
are brilliant role-models and some of the most recognised sports personalities in Ireland. "As a community-owned airport, the airport prides itself on our ‘community ethos’ and we feel the GAA represents the perfect partnership for the airport given the lads represent counties from across our catchment region and have all given so much to their local clubs and counties over the last number of years. We’re very proud to have them on board and are looking forward to working with them over the next few months in their new roles.”
THE MINISTER for Health, Dr. James Reilly made it clear in the Dail last week that he wants mammography restored in Sligo. "I do not want women travelling from Sligo to Galway unnecessarily," he said. "I have made it clear many times," he added, "that I want to end the days of 30 people travelling to see a specialist." The Minister was responding to Dail queries in the BreastCheck programme when Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghin O Caolain specifically asked him about election promises in Sligo. Mr. O’Caolain had noted that the equipment there has been lying idle for the past two years. "Both Fine Gael and the Labour Party made commitments in their pre-election manifestos and the programme for Government that full breast cancer services would be restored to Sligo. The Minister responded: "We are very keen to see the mammography service restored to Sligo. However, we are experiencing great difficulty in attracting mammographers. We have been obliged, therefore, to consider recruiting from abroad and, in final frustration, we are going to begin retraining people here. "We have already appointed two people to training posts in order that they will be available to work either at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. Deputy Reilly said it was definitely his intention to assign a mammographer to Sligo. The matter was under the remit of the Galway group, which is constantly under pressure. "I have made it clear to Mr. Bill Maher, who is keen to have this mammography service restored, that these people should be available to the Sligo service. "I have made it clear many times that I want to end the days of 30 people travelling to see a specialist. Instead, a specialist should travel to see them, in this case for mammograms, the Minister concluded.

Future of Castlebar’s Sacred Heart Hospital in doubt MAJOR concerns have arisen, particularly in political circles, over the future of the Sacred Heart Hospital facility in Castlebar. The two main parties in the town, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, are at loggerheads following claims the facility is in genuine danger of closing in two year’s time with the loss of 150 jobs, 77 long-stay beds and 36 rehab beds. Fianna Fáil representatives told a press conference that HSE West management in Mayo was making no progress in respect of its application to the national planning steering group for €10.43 million in funding to make the centre compliant with HIQA standards beyond its existing licence of June 30, 2015. The conference was called after Councillor Al McDonnell and Councillor Blackie Gavin held a meeting with the HSE West manager in the county, Frank Murphy. Stated Councillor McDonnell: “Despite several attempts on the part of the applicants to secure a positive response, there has been no indication of a favourable outcome to date. “Mr. Murphy confirmed that from the date of the grant approval, the minimum estimated timescale in bringing the project to fruition is two years. “As a consequence, this matter is extremely urgent and grant approval must be provided for the project immediately. Otherwise, we face the extraordinary possibility that this outstanding facility will close in 2015.” Councillor Gavin said Taoiseach Kenny is in a position to secure the funding if he is prepared to make the necessary representations to the national planning steering group, which is responsible for capital health allocations. “I can’t understand why he has not

already done so and it appears to me that our Taoiseach has turned his back on Castlebar,” he added. Deputy Dara Calleary said he will be tabling a parliamentary question on the funding in the coming days. Conor Smyth, chairman of the Castlebar Fianna Fáil Cumann, said the people of Castlebar were led to believe by the Fine Gael party that the refurbishment of the Sacred Heart Hospital was ‘a done deal’. “As we have found out, nothing could be further from the truth. But if Fine Gael members are convinced otherwise, then why doesn’t Enda Kenny make that phone call to the national planning steering group?” he asked. While Deputy Kenny was unavailable for comment on the matter, his constituency assistant, Councillor Ger Deere, accused Fianna Fáil of ‘indulging in scaremongering and opportunism’. He hit out: “The reason the Sacred
Heart Hospital is finding itself in its current position is because of the years of neglect under Fianna Fáil governments. They have some cheek coming out with the statements they have made and it’s even worse to be using the staff as pawns in this issue. “An Taoiseach is well aware of the urgency of the situation and there is no question of him ever turning his back in Castlebar. It is unrealistic and naive for anybody to suggest that he can just ring up the national planning steering group and everything will be rosy in the garden again. “It does not work like that. There is no question the Sacred Heart Hospital has a future and the money will be sanctioned in due course. It’s impossible to put a date on it at this point, however.” In the meantime, the Castlebar FF Cumann has organised a community rally to be held at the Sacred Heart Hospital on Monday, May 27, at 7 p.m.

P
eople with physical disabilities and their families joined community and voluntary organisations, public sector representatives and notfor-profit agencies to listen to nationally recognised speakers and policy makers at Irish Wheelchair Association’s Annual Conference which took place this weekend. The conference was chaired by Broadcaster, Journalist and Television Documentary Presenter, Charlie Bird. Presentations from national experts including John Lonergan, Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison and Liam O’Sullivan, Director of Care Alliance Ireland addressed the areas of civil society, social protection, community organisations and their current position, and the relationship between the state and the community and voluntary sector.

Deeply embedded in local communities and with a presence in every county in Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association has a strong reputation as one of the leading service providers and representative organisations in the sector. The conference also featured the launch of Irish Wheelchair Association’s Strategic Plan: Driving on - Determining our Future: A Strategy for People 2013 – 2016. CEO, Kathleen McLoughlin introduced the strategy to delegates emphasising: ‘IWA is one of a number of notfor-profit organisations that work to build a more inclusive society. We have been successful at this because we keep the person at the centre of the process in all that we do. We have also been successful because we listen and respond in a timely manner to our member’s needs. This has been most evident in the development of our 2013- 2016 strategic plan. The involvement of members at every stage of the planning is a clear testament to the ethos of the Association. IWA’s new
strategy Driving On- Determining our Future again sets out a personcentred approach to how the Association will move forward in the coming years and address the issues that have the biggest impact on our members’ lives and ensure that they can remain in control of their lives and shape their own futures’. The strategic plan has been developed at a time of unprecedented pressure on resources, and against a backdrop of financial uncertainty for the entire economy. Despite this situation, the Association is determined to continue to plan effectively for the future and to ensure that what has been achieved to-date is built upon and improved. Marian Harkin, Independent Member of the European Parliament for North West constituency, also attended the conference dinner and presented the Irish Wheelchair Association’s Volunteer of the Year Award to Mr Tony Hassett, who is from Tipperary and has volunteered with the Association for thirteen years.

Bonkers: Council paints double yellow lines on cycle path too narrow for cars A t just 136cm (4.5ft) wide not even a Smart car could drive down this narrow cycle path painted with double yellow lines. But Nottingham council says they are essential to stop drivers blocking the narrow route in the city centre. ‘We realise how this may look peculiar to the casual observer, but we are committed to making Nottingham accessible and safe for cyclists,’ said traffic safety manager Caroline Nash. ‘Sadly, sometimes drivers park half or wholly on pavements making it difficult for cyclists and pedestrians. ‘For the avoidance of doubt and so that we can enforce the restrictions, we have placed yellow lines on both sides of the track.’ However local residents have criticised the yellow lines as ‘rules gone mad and a waste of time’. Local businessman Tim Garratt said: ‘Parking in Nottingham is bad enough but this is just bonkers. ‘Clearly anyone who could wedge a car in that gap deserves a ticket. ‘Parking in the city needs to be made easier or else we will start pushing people away.’
Two men take on labour pains simulator to experience child birth TWO brave male volunteers were left screaming in agony after ‘experiencing’ child birth while attached to a labour pains simulator. Walking confidently into the hospital, one of the men announces to the camera: ‘According to women child birth is the worst kind of pain there is? ‘But did you know according to men, women exaggerate everything?’ he adds. The confident duo’s words came back to haunt them later on in the day after being zapped with electrodes that replicated the contractions women experience during child birth. As their amused wives watched on, the pair were left grimacing as the intensity of the fake labour pains slowly increased. Covering their faces with pillows, the two men were filmed kicking their legs in agony and letting out wailing screams. That was not good,’ said one at the end of the ordeal. ‘Mum if anything that I just experienced is anywhere close to what I did to you all those years ago, I’m sorry, you’re like a superhero.’ The clip has already racked up over 25,000 hits on YouTube. Two Dutch men took part in a similar stunt a couple of months ago.

Brighton resident ‘discovers vortex to another dimension, complete with giant snake’
BRIGHTON could be the centre of an invasion from dimension-hopping snakes if a report from a resident that a wormhole exists in the city is anything to go by. According to The Argus a concerned local reported the mysterious sighting to the council through the Fix My Street website, which is used to register concerns. The person, who remained anonymous, wrote: ‘I was recently walking my affenpinscher (a toy breed of dog) around the Hanover area of Brighton when I noticed that a wormhole or vortex has opened up on Montreal Road. ‘On closer inspection it seems to be some kind of portal to other times, places and dimensions. ‘I would have investigated further but I was concerned my little dog would be sucked into it. ‘Is this meant to be there? At first I believed it might be part of the Brighton Festival but I believe it could be a hazard to the general public. I look forward to your response.’ And if possibility of a spooky wormhole wasn’t enough, the poster then said he had returned to the site earlier this month and had spotted a serpent escaping from the opening. ‘I went past the other day and it seems to have got worse – it is now emitting an unsettling yellow light and a large snake appears to be emerging from the wall,’ they added. When The Argus contacted Brighton and Hove City Council they said they would not be following up the claim.

Social network just for students
A new social network designed to protect students from the prying eyes of parents or employers has been launched and could rival Facebook at universities. Unii.com has been developed purely for those in higher education and promises to keep student antics strictly under wraps. Only those with official university email addresses will be able to join the site which developers claim will afford under-graduates complete privacy online. The social network will operate in a similar way to Mark Zuckerberg's brainchild which began by restricting membership to students before opening up to the rest of the world. Marco Nardone, the 24-year-old CEO of Unii.com, insisted his site would ensure "what happens at Uni, can now stay at Uni". He said: "Most students wouldn't invite their parents to a party, or loop them into a phone conversation, so why should they have to worry about what they might see on social networks? "University is a place where students experiment responsibly, make new friends and find their feet, so we've developed a social network that allows them to do just that solely amongst their peers." Developers say the site should help students make the most of their university experience, with pages dedicated to assisting societies with events and a dedicated "jobs board" for students to find internships or employment. As with other social networks, members of Unii.com can group their connections within circles to decrease or expand on the number of people who can see each post. A spokesman said: "It is available to all students at university within the UK and as such requires a university accredited email address in order to log in. This gives students complete privacy in their online activity meaning they can post and communicate with other students in their networks without worrying about their online footprint with families and potential future employers."
Over 7m 'have never used the internet'
M
ore than seven million adults in the UK and Ireland have never used the internet, official figures suggest.
The data revealed around one million more people have ventured on to the web since this time last year. But the latest statistics show 14% of those over the age of 16 have never accessed material online. Significantly more women than men have never used the internet (4.2 million compared with 2.8 million), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. It found 326,000 adults used the internet for the first time between January and March this year. The ONS said: "Internet use is linked to various socio-economic and demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, disability, geographical location and weekly earnings. For example, those who are less likely to have used the internet include elderly and disabled adults." A breakdown of the population by age showed almost all of those between 16 and 24 (99%) have used the web. Those least likely to have connected were 75 or over. However, there was a marked increase in internet users among people of this age in the past two years. At the beginning of 2011, estimates suggested 23.8% of this demographic had accessed the internet, compared with 34.3% this year (1.6 million people). The 3.1 million non-users aged 75 or over make up 43% of the 7.1 mil-
lion who have never connected, the ONS said. But it warned estimates relating to elderly people should be treated with a degree of caution because of smaller sample sizes. A regional breakdown of the figures showed Londoners were most likely to have made a foray online. An estimated 90% of those in the capital have accessed web content. People in Northern Ireland were least likely to have embraced the digital age. In this area, 79% of adults have gone online, the figures suggested. The ONS said the overall increase in internet users since last year stood at 13%. In the two years since it began to collate the data, it said the number of adults who have used the web has risen by 2.4 million (6%), from an initial 41.1 million. Its data showed income and disability remain a barrier to getting online. "Individuals with no disability are over three times more likely to have used the internet than individuals with a disability," the ONS said. It added: "Internet use has almost reached full coverage for those earning in excess of ÂŁ500 a week, with internet use at 98% or above for all adults with weekly pay rates above this level." It found more than 5% of workers with a gross weekly pay of less than ÂŁ200 per week have never connected.
Hackers sought 'global notoriety' Computer hackers who considered themselves to be "modern day pirates" led sophisticated cyber attacks on websites and systems of major institutions including the CIA, Sony, the FBI and Nintendo, a court has heard. Britons Ryan Ackroyd, Jake Davis, Mustafa Al-Bassam and Ryan Cleary were "hactivists" with the LulzSec collective which also targeted organisations like News International, the NHS and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), the court heard. Working from their bedrooms in 2011, they stole huge amounts of sensitive personal data including emails, online passwords and credit card details belonging to hundreds of thousands of people, Southwark Crown Court in London heard. This was then posted openly on their website and file-sharing sites like Pirate Bay. They also carried out distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on many institutions, crashing their websites, the sentencing hearing was told. Prosecutor Sandip Patel said the men lacked the political drive of groups like Anonymous, from which they had developed, and seemed to have been doing it for kicks saying: "It's clear from the evidence that they
intended to achieve extensive national and international notoriety and publicity. They saw themselves as latter-day pirates." Ex-soldier Ackroyd, 26, from Mexborough, South Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to one charge of carrying out an unauthorised act to impair the operation of a computer, contrary to the Criminal Law Act 1977. He hacked major institutions, including stealing huge amounts of data from Sony, and a hack of News International websites that led people visiting the Sun's site being redirected to a fake story about Rupert Murdoch committing suicide. Al-Bassam, 18, from Peckham, south London, was still at school at the time and used the alias tFlow. Davis, 20, from Lerwick, Shetland, who used the alias Topiary, smirked in the dock when details of his activities were outlined to the court. He was also LulzSec's main publicist and in charge of media relations. Both he and Al-Bassam previously pleaded guilty to hacking and launching cyber attacks on a range of organisations, including the CIA and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. Cleary, 21, of Wickford Essex, also known as ViraL, pleaded guilty to the same two charges as well as four separate charges in-
cluding hacking into US air force agency computers at the Pentagon. He also admitted possession of indecent images relating to child pornography including rape scenes found on his hard drive by police. Davis, Al-Bassam and Ackroyd were core members of LulzSec along with a New Yorkbased hacker, the court heard. Cleary worked with them and also made up to ÂŁ2,500 a month working as a freelance hacker for third parties. Lulz is internet slang that can be interpreted as "laughs", "humour" or "amusement", and Sec refers to "security".

This years St. Patrick’s Day parade in Ballina
B
ALLINA town is gearing itself for the Summer season and the business and retail sector is looking forward with confidence even in recessionary times. The town is now the largest in County Mayo and the third largest in the province of Connaught, after Galway and Sligo. In the context of the West Region, Ballina forms a major centre in the regional settlement hierarchy and is a focal point for the North Mayo/West Sligo area with a catchment population of in excess of 40,000 people. Ballina is situated at the most southern tip
of Killala Bay, at the mouth of the River Moy and is now the well-established centre of commerce for this region. The total population of Ballina stands at 14,001 (Urban & Rural) as confirmed by the Central Statistics Office. The population of Ballina Urban is 6,842, of which 3,326 are male and 3,516 are female. The town is built along the world famous River Moy, one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in Europe, which attracts a huge influx of visitors each year. In 2008 Ballina was officially launched as the Salmon Capital of Europe. Indeed, the

River Moy is internationally acknowledged as an exceptional salmon fishery, producing several thousand salmon to the rod annually. The famous Ridge Pool, the salmon anglers’ paradise, is located in the heart of the town. The salmon is also at the centre of one of the west’s longest established Summer events, Ballina’s salmon festival. In July this year, as in years past, the town will come alive in a frenzy of activity. Over the past five years it has developed into one of Ireland's major festivals, providing a week long feast of free entertainment for the entire family - music, song, theatre, art, heritage, culture and novelty events. Foreign visitors view and experience what is best about Mayo during this spectacular week. The town’s newest bridge, Salmon Weir Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge over the River Moy from Barrett St. to Ridge Pool Rd. The bridge, which was designed to resemble a fishing rod, was opened in July 2009.
The town is well serviced with its road, rail and bus network and is just approximately 50 miles from Knock International Airport. Ballina is the principle service centre in North Mayo. While there are a number of national multiple retailers within the town centre, including Tesco, Penneys, A|wear, Easons, Shaws, Dunnes Stores, Boots and others, which are all key anchors and attract customers to the town, the traditional businesses are still a major attraction, and continue to provide locals and visitors with an unrivalled range of products and services. Ballina has a very lively entertainment scene with ample choice when it comes to eating out and hitting the town. A longstanding reputation for being a great place to eat out, Ballina has a wide variety of restaurants serving Irish, European and Asian cuisine. It also has a fine choice in late night bars and night clubs.

Steeped in history, it is the birthplace of many of Ireland’s famous sons – Charlie Haughey, former Taoiseach; Louis Brenna, inventor of the mono-rail torpedo; Margaret Burke Sheridan, world famous soprano, and is also the home place of Lord Lucan. AUDI A6 Bi Turbo - Can it take the crown as King of the Super Diesels?
T
he king is dead - or so Audi would have you believe. Yes, the mighty BMW 535D - crowned supreme ruler of the diesels for the last decade - has finally met its match. The stats alone will make your eyes water boasting an unrivalled 313bhp and a 0-100kph sprint of just 5.1 seconds. The twin turbo, V6 is packing enough torque to pull down a house and constant all-wheel drive Quattro means it'll eat corners for breakfast. Pound for pound it trumps the Beamer on horses, torque and acceleration and only falls short on CO2 emissions. Still, a family saloon with that kind of grunt which is capable of returning over 42mpg (6.4l/100km) is no mean feat - even in the uber-efficient world of a Bavarian boffin. It looks absolutely savage too with stonking 20 inch alloys in 5 arm Rotor design (option), lowered suspension and smoked-out rear windows. Inside it's executive luxury all the way with soft Valcona leather at every touch and heated front seats as standard. The list of inclusive kit on the S Line test car is
generous by Audi standards and includes climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth interface, Audi Drive Select, Driver Information System – all displayed on a slim, 7 inch colour monitor which retracts into the dash. Body-wise, you get sports suspension, full S Line body kit with Platinum front spoiler, diffuser lip, chrome tail pipes and 19 inch twin spoke alloys. The trademark Xenon lights with LED surrounds complete the beastly look. But we're in Supersaloon country so lookin’ pretty is not enough - you gotta walk the walk or in automotive terms “drive the drive”. Wow … and what a drive it is? The raw power is nothing short of spectacular. Open the taps and hell on earth is unleashed as the double turbo set-up gets about catapulting this hulking (almost 2- tonne) limo along the tarmac at a Ferrari-like speed. The eight-speed automatic tip tronic gearbox is sublime and twinned to the Audi Drive Select means you can potter about town in the lap of luxury and should the road and mood take you - a swirl of the knob and it's hooligan time.

BMW luxury on speed for the price of a three-bed semi
I
n a way this was a simple assignment. Get into a 4dr highperformance coupe that will cost €181,180 and drive it hard – but safely – on parts of the autobahn with no speed limit. Where there are limits on twisty smaller roads, obey them strictly. And see how it feels. I did so. The M6 Gran Coupe is a seriously stoked-up 4.4-litre (4,395cc, 560bhp) V8 petrol. It thunders from a standing start to 100kmh in 4.2 seconds and on to 200kmh in a total of 12.7 seconds. It has a top speed of 305kmh. For most buyers it will be limited to 250kmh. Suffice to say the one I drove did not have a limiter. There are four seats (technically five), decent room in the back, a 113-millimetre longer wheelbase and a reasonable boot. It is 60 litres down on the M5 saloon, though you can increase it from 460 to 1,265 by dropping the rear seats. And the road tax is €2,350. The M6 shares a platform with the great M5 but its interior is much closer to the 640i Gran Coupe. It will take two rear passengers; headroom and knee room are not too bad. Luxury-on-speed kinda sums it up. Leather upholstery embraced us, two twin-pipe exhausts snarled impatiently, and off we went. Gently at first through windy Ardnaree, Ballina. 096-70523 Morgan
roads; leather on the seats and in the roof lining, power burbling under the long bonnet. Before we hit the autobahn, we looked at it again in the sunshine. The lightweight carbon-fibre roof, with its central recess, made it look much lower and reduced the centre of gravity. At the back there was a carbon-fibre diffuser to help stabilise us at higher speeds. It was to be worked hard. We ogled the 20ins twin-spoke five-arm M-light alloys, could not escape the boom from the two twin exhausts (at the extremities of the rear) and looked askance at the 'gold' ceramic brake callipers, great big chunks of them to reel us in. As an M, it gets those 20ins alloys, lots of leather, a brilliant heads-up display, heated seats (but cooled ones are extra), sat nav (got it wrong a few times with us) and all sorts of rocket and parachute enhancers to propel and slow you down. There can be an extraordinary buzz when you are in control of (and I was) something like this. For a few moments the real world faded. It was just me and a gargantuan invention of power and speed. It had awesome ability to almost nonchalantly handle the stresses and strains of such velocity. They have tweaked steering and suspension to better accommodate
MK Tyres
that blast of V8 power through the seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox. Seamless. You can choose Comfort, Sport and Sport+ suspension/ performance settings. We settled for Sport most of the time. Comfort was a little soft and Sport+ a little harsh. Then I took it back down, back to where 160kmh felt easy, where 120kmh was pedestrian. That is the sort of car we are talking about. Rarified performance, madly pricey, but every now and then a real experience to drive. I'm not advocating speed, but it was thrilling to have the ability to drive fast and safe. The pace, power and ability of this 4dr coupe to take my flat-to-thefloor demands was hugely impressive. Where would you drive it in Ireland and not inadvertently break limits? As well as that there is more room in an M5 saloon, which is cheaper. All true, but there are always those who want, and can afford, super-cars like this and potential rivals such as the Mercedes CLS AMG, Audi RS7, Porsche Panamera etc. So this will be bought by a handful in Ireland 2013. They're open for orders now. The price of a good three-bed semi. The next assignment beckons.

T
HE countdown to the second new-car registration period, which starts on July 1, now begins in earnest. The only question is, what shape is it going to take and what it will mean for buyers and sellers? Are we going to see some marques come up with 'unmissable' special offers so their sales don't slump over the next weeks? Or are we going to see something of a flat-lining for May and June as everyone waits for a spike and flush of new-car deals in July? One can conjure all sorts of scenarios but we are into unchartered territory. As you know, this is the first year of split registration periods (January to June; July to December) with the new 131 and 132 plates. The same will apply next year and into the future. It is generally accepted within the industry that it will take a while to settle into the new rhythm. That is of little consolation to dealers, salespeople and buyers right now, because the uncertainty is feeding into the economic reluctance to spend money on a new car. I visited a few showrooms last week and at the
James Foy Auto Service
weekend. The silence was frightening. I've also had a look at the most up-to-date newcar registration figures and I'd say they are around 12pc down on the year to April 30. It is so hard to gauge with the prevalence of pre-registering. But the sales crisis goes much deeper than even the figures suggest. The big concern coming across to me from ordinary people is how they are ever – not this year, probably not next – going to afford to replace their existing car(s). The average age of cars on the road is 8.25 years. You are not going to get a lot for such a vehicle as a trade-in. You are looking, therefore, for a sizeable chunk of money to seriously upgrade. And it is not there. People are getting by. Just. I know some who live in absolute dread of something going wrong because they will be faced with the dilemma of repairs costing more than the car is worth. The nightmare is repairs will be postponed or skimped. The money simply isn't there. It is fair to say we are all entering choppy, unchartered waters.

naturalhealth What is Self-Esteem?
The information provided to you on this page is for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical advice and it is important that you do not make medical decisions without first consulting your doctor or other healthcare professional.
self-esteem. To Maintain Healthy Self-Esteem... • Celebrate your strengths and achievements. • Forgive yourself for your mistakes. • Don't dwell on your weaknesses, every human has them. • Change the way you talk to yourself stop putting yourself down! • Be sure that you are not judging yourself against unreasonable standards. • Beating yourself for your weaknesses is self defeating. Use that energy for positive thoughts about you.
H
ealthy self-esteem means thinking as highly of yourself as you think of your friends and peers. We are so used to negative feedback that we are more aware of our weaknesses than our strengths. We are often taught we will "fail", so it is often hard to enjoy success, no matter how small each "success" might be. According to Nathaniel Branden, Ph.D., noted author and expert on the subject, "Self-esteem is the experience of being competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and of being worthy of happiness." Why is High Self-Esteem Necessary? As Branden notes, "Positive self-esteem is the immune system of the spirit, helping an individual face life problems and bounce back from adversity." So, high self-esteem is crucial during the turbulence of your teenage years. How Can A Teen Build Self-Esteem? The process is simple, but putting it to work is difficult. Self-esteem is built upon the experience of success. Think of it as a circular process. When people experience success, they grow in self-confidence. As self-confidence grows, they feel empowered to face new challenges. As they succeed in confronting each challenge, they develop the capacity to cope with whatever life throws their way. That feeling leads to further growth of self-confidence, self-reliance and
People With High Self-Esteem Are: • Able to accept and learn from their own mistakes. • Confident without being obnoxious or conceited. • Not devastated by criticism. • Not overly defensive when questioned. • Not easily defeated by setbacks and obstacles. • Unlikely to feel a need to put others down. • Open and assertive in communicating their needs. • Not overly worried about failing or looking foolish. •Not harshly or destructively critical of themselves. • Not aggressively driven to prove themselves. • Able to laugh at themselves, not taking themselves too seriously. Why Do You Think You Have So Few Strengths Worth Celebrating? • Because everyone has always pointed out your shortcomings? • Because you rarely get any positive feedback for a job well done? • Because the things you do well are so familiar to you that you take them for granted? • Because you have learned to focus only on your mistakes? When You Make A Mistake, Do You Say: • What an idiot! How can you be so stupid!
• Can't you get anything right! What a loser! • There you go again! You're not really up to it, are you?!! • Who else has talked to you this way in the past?
ARE YOU OVER WEIGHT? Something special coming up - Safe Herbal Programme. Paddy and Mena MrDermott looking after your weight for over 14 years. Call: 048-66327490 Herbalife Distributors
Why Are You Still Listening To Them? • You can't change your past, but you can change the way you talk to yourself today. • Start by making a LONG list of all the good things you have ever done. • Catch yourself saying nasty things to yourself, then STOP. • Recite your list of achievements to yourself. Convince yourself to be proud of what you have done and of what you are working on doing, on anything you have done for another person, on any improvement in your school work, or on how well you manage your time, your money, your friends, your schedule, etc. Affirmations for Self-Esteem • There are many things I do successfully. (Write them down if you have to.) • I can improve my self-esteem by meeting my own expectations. • I don't have to strive for perfection to approve of myself. • My worth as a human being does not depend upon achieving a perfect weight, or by being the smartest, or the most popular, or the fastest, or having the highest grades, or being the funniest, or having the coolest friends, or getting into the best college, or... • I alone am responsible for the decisions I make. • I am a unique individual. • Persistence will help me succeed. • Every mistake I make can be an opportunity to learn. I can't be afraid to make mistakes, this is how I learn to improve. • I deserve support and will ask for help when I need it. • I have the power to forgive myself for past mistakes.
