T

HE reason for the brutal murder of popular Sligo man, Eugene Gillespie (67) at his home in Old Market Street last weekend still remains a mystery and has sent shock waves throughout the community. Further mystery has been thrown into the mix

as a consequence of the 999 call which the Gardai received on Thursday with information that a man was tied up in a house with a brown gate. Though a Garda statement said they investigated the matter and found nothing untoward further explanation is now necessary

since the Gardai admit they are tracing the source of the call and carrying out house to house searches. Speculation from other sources indicate the Gardai may have checked the wrong house. Continued on Page 2

BARBARIC: Sligo Community in shock after brutal murder Continued from front page However, Mayor of Sligo, David Cawley, defended the Gardai, saying the information was too vague, that they would never take a 999 call lightly and he had every confidence the Gardai would be successful in tracking down the perpetrators of this terrible crime. The Gardai are also probing into whether it could be linked to several other vicious robberies on elderly people in the town after the pensioner was found tied up, beaten and left to die inside his own front door, after his house was ransacked by those who attacked him They are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to clues, as they are aware that several other pensioners have been targeted recently. Elderly twins who live just streets away from Mr. Gillespie were beaten up and their home was ransacked by four men months earlier. Two men, who are in their late 80s, from the same area, were assaulted during a raid in recent months and a substantial amount of money was taken. "This has happened to some other old men in the town; now it's happened to poor Eugene but it ended very badly. Every-

one who lives alone is very worried," said one elderly resident. This statement is echoing throughout Sligo and the NorthWest this week following the “barbaric” events of last weekend. The majority of people (not just the elderly) that have spoken to North West Express now feel that our judicial system must take cognizance of the extreme fear that permeates the community at large. Thousands of elderly people will not sleep easy until the perpetrators of this foul deed are apprehended and brought to justice . . . and the Gardai must be provided with every facility and support possible to achieve this end. Perhaps it was lack of resources that prevented an adequate investigation of the 999 call in the first place? Time will tell. Surely, no stone should be left unturned when it comes to investigating such a call – utilizing local radio or any other media available. The victims of assaults and robberies – those who are lucky to be still alive – will never be at ease, or sleep at night, until their attackers are put away. Unfortunately, some of these attackers, if apprehended, are given lean sentences . . . or community service or the like . . . and are at large again after a short period. Judges, when applying the law, appear to be di-

vorced from reality. In the eyes of all fair-minded people, a zero tolerance solution is most appropriate for those who “trespass” and break into private dwellings with intent to rob, plunder and injure innocent people. Remember, Eugene Gillespie was found lying behind the front door of his home. He had been brutally beaten and had sustained a severe gash to his forehead and a broken jaw. His hands had been bound so tightly with wire cables that doctors would have been unable to save them had he survived. What the poor man had suffered in order to drag himself to his front door in such a condition can only be imagined. If his attackers had any remnants of humanity (after they robbed and battered him) they would have made greater efforts to ensure they gave adequate information to somebody before they made their getaway. We now have regular episodes of cars being robbed while people attend funerals and weddings and even during Mass on Sundays. There was a spate or robberies in Cliffoney and Donegal recently. Only a few short few years ago a man was murdered in Bellaghy, Charlestown, and the culprits are still at large . . . though many would contend the police know who they are, but are powerless to act. Surely, those who are convicted of trespassing, with intent to rob or injure private individuals, should be severely punished, to deter others from attempting the same acts. We live in recessionary times and many people are struggling to make ends meet. But those who resort to such criminal acts cannot be allowed to prosper and evade justice. The past week in Sligo may yet prove to be a watershed in terms of what ordinary citizens can endure. Yesterday, Gardai were trying to establish Mr Gillespie's movements prior to his attack and are examining CCTV footage. They also revealed they were carrying house to house searches, particularly after the 999 call. The Gillespie family are too devastated to even talk about the tragedy. Meanwhile, a friend of Mr. Gillespie's, living in Australia, Declan Foley, who has set up a fund in a bid to offer a reward for any information that could help catch the Sligo man's killers, says he is getting a tremendous response. He has asked people to email him at declanfoley@ireland.com with any information they may have. Gardaí said that members of the public are entitled to do what they wish but that their only official involvement with any kind of reward would be through Crimestoppers. Anyone with information should contact Sligo Garda station on 071-9157000, the Garda Confidential telephone line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. As we go to press there have been no arrests.

Cistercians College: a Great Tradition and Future A t this time of year when parents and students are examining academic options, it is opportune to be reminded of the achievements of one of Ireland’s most recognised centres of learning. Cistercian College, Roscrea is a leading educational establishment in Ireland. Today it has the unique distinction of being the only college in the world run by the Cistercian monks. The college, while steeped in tradition, offers the most up to date facilities in sport, education and technology. Cistercian College offers a climate of academic ambition. The college believes that each student has talent and great potential. The goal is the pursuit of excellence - for each student to be the best that he can be. “We believe that our role is to equip our students not only to take their place in today’s Ireland, but to make a difference and help transform it,” says Dom Richard Purcell, Abbot, Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea. Boarding School As a seven day school, Cistercian College sees itself very much as a home away from home. While recognising the importance of academic achievements, the college reflects a holistic approach in their diverse programme of sports, technology and education. Renowned for its achievements on the rugby and hurling fields, the college’s programme also includes swimming, tennis, athletics, golf, basketball, show jumping, discus and javelin. In addition, a large number of musical instruments are taught at the college, as well as debating and public speaking in 4 languages. The on-campus facilities speak for themselves. These include an indoor

swimming pool, nine hole golf course, five tennis courts and an allweather pitch. Meanwhile, the Millennium sports complex caters for all indoor sports. The college claims Dick Spring, Brian Cowen, David Andrews, Stephen Lucey and Gavin Duffy, Tiernan O’Halloran and Arthur Spring among its past pupils. Celebrating One Hundred Years of education, Cistercian College aims to cater for all students, building upon each student’s achievements to date. To this end, a committed staff of more than fifty teachers, deans, housemasters and sports personnel led by the college president Mrs. Marcelline Cody, are there to help students through their time at Roscrea. While many students begin in First Year, each year a number of students join from transition year to complete the senior cycle. The Cistercian College Transition Year programme consists of film-making, outdoor activities, charitable work abroad, driving lessons and a regular academic programme. Cistercian College has always been more than just a school. It is home to those who live and work there, be they students or staff. Set in an eight hundred acre campus, the college is surrounded by sportsfields, woodlands and forest. Built in the shadow of the Cistercian Monastery, the college is under the direction of the Abbot and Community assisted by a Board of Governors. MacSharry slams Government on Sligo-Dublin rail line F ianna Fáil Senator, Marc Mac Sharry, has called on the Government to intervene amid fears that services on the Dublin Sligo train route are to be cut. Senator Mac Sharry was responding to reports that cuts to the Dublin-Sligo rail service are imminent. “I find it deeply worrying that there seems to be plans to cut the rail service link between Sligo and Dublin. This is a critical part of the access infrastructure of the entire region. For many people the rail link is the only viable way to commute to work on a daily basis. “The massive price of petrol is precluding many people from driving and the possibility of the train service being cut will deeply distress a lot of families. “Near the main employment hubs serviced by the Sligo line, people are commuting to work on

the train route rather than pay more expensive rents in the larger towns and the only option they have is to make the journey on a daily basis. “I find it perplexing that Irish Rail was given a €36 million cash injection in July to stave off the threat of cuts to services yet here we are in August with the same threat hanging over our heads. “I am calling on the Minister for Transport to clarify where the €36 million investment went and what areas of Irish Rail received the cash injection. For a Government that presided over the closure of the Sligo-Dublin air link, it seems incredible that they now plan to scale down rail services. The north west access is critical for tourism and business, both indigenous and through foreign direct investment, and to set about further dismantling our access medians will undermine our marketability as a location for

business. “I am under no illusions as to the problems that exist in the economy and clearly Irish Rail

must deal with their own finances but cuts must not be made to the Sligo line, which is the north west region’s critical access artery.

Ballina girl stars in Fair City

?

?

BALLINA followers of RTE’s Fair City couldn’t help but notice a familiar face on their screens in recent times. Budding Ballina actress Annette Flynn plays the part of school-teacher Maeve McIlhinney. Annette is daughter of Paddy and Anne Flynn, Bohernasup, Ballina. Paddy is perhaps best known for his long-standing involvement with Ballina Town Soccer Club. Annette co-produced the show “Orphans” with English playwright, Dennis Kelly, in Dublin’s Focus Theatre in 2010. It was her performance in this show which helped the Ballina girl achieve her

current role in the popular Irish soap opera. Undoubtedly, she is very excited with this opportunity and Maeve’s role is expected to develop over the coming weeks. Currently Maeve is sharing a house with bachelor characters, Sean and Finn, and there is speculation there may be romance in the air before long. Previously, Annette has had roles in a number of TG4 dramas, but Fair City is her first big break into prime time TV with a strong character in Ireland's long-running popular soap drama. Annette is very enthusiastic about acting; she loves working on Fair City and has been made very welcome by everyone on the show. It can be a tough business, though. The hours are long and the work is hard – from 7.30 a.m. to 6.30. During rehearsal week, the day starts on Monday at 9.30am and the cast read through episodes for that week with writers and producers. We can look forward with enthusiasm to Maeve’s developing role over the next few months. Perhaps we will see Annette perform in Ballina’s state-of-the-art Arts Centre in the not too distant future.

County & City managers back the Gathering COUNTY and city managers from across Ireland told Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring last week that they are backing the Gathering Ireland 2013, the festival of festivals which is running for the whole of 2013. Minister Ring met a number of County and City Managers to thank them for their support to date, and to brief them on preparations for next year. “Communities right across Ireland will be key to making the Gathering Ireland a success. The Gathering is an invitation to the world, and especially our Diaspora, to come and join in our celebration of all that is best about Ireland. “That celebration will take place in clubs, parishes, companies and organisations everywhere in Ireland as they host their own Gatherings and extend that invitation to their own connections. “This is not just a Government initiative. The Gathering Ireland 2013 is something everyone across the country can own and belong to. Local authorities have a key part to play in the Gathering, by taking lead responsibility to drive events and activities at a local and county level and working with local communities on their own Gatherings. This is all about bringing additional overseas visitors into every village, town and county in Ireland and getting the benefit of that extra tourist spend spread right around the country. “I know that County and City Managers have already responded to the Gathering by appointing a designated Gathering coordinator in every local authority area and that in many counties, the mobilisation effort to get communities actively supporting The Gathering is well underway.”

UNDAY may have been an important day for Mayo people all over the world, but the previous Monday was a significant one, particularly in the life of Ballina town, as former President and UN High Commissioner Mary Robinson chose her home town to launch her memoir “Everybody Matters”. It was also significant that the book was launched by another important Mayo person, An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, who expressed his delight that the former president who lit that symbolic candle in the window of Áras an Uachtaráin to reach out to the millions of Irish dias-

pora, and travelled the world as the High Commissioner for Human Rights, had chosen her home county for the launch. Indeed, the launch in her home town of Ballina was made doubly significant by the earlier announcement of a new Mary Robinson Centre, to be established in her birthplace, Victoria House, situated on the banks of the River Moy. The centre, which is the brainchild of Mayo County Council and Ballina Town Council, will incorporate a Visitor Centre and an academic research centre. In his speech, Enda Kenny observed: “Home in so many ways is what makes us who we are and it’s wonderful for the people here to have Mary, Nick and the family home.” And, unsurprisingly, he left his prepared script on the occasion to say that Sam Maguire would hopefully be coming home to Mayo, too, very soon. This was, however, before Donegal had their say. It was also appropriate that the event took place in front of a packed theatre in Ballina Arts Centre, overlooking the River Moy. Mr. Kenny noted that personal and public love merged in this book, which is underpinned by Mary Robinson’s characteristic convictions about justice, truth, freedom, dignity, respect, human and civil rights. “This is the memoir of an Ambassador from and a citizen of the ‘Republic of Conscience’. Everybody Matters is not just an excellent title of an extraordinary book; it is the philosophy by which Mary Robinson lives and works”, he continued.

He said this ‘beautifully written and brilliantly observed’ book managed to be haunting, brave, disturbing, uncomfortable, reassuring, illuminating and also very funny, while also revealing an innate humility. Mr Kenny suggested that the book be required reading, particularly for the under 40s. “In particular, in our schools and universities, where I believe there needs to be new moves on teaching others knowledge to look again at teaching our children and young people not just to learn but to think. And to do so critically, independently and imaginatively. In a way that involves not just their rights but their responsibilities, what they can do for others, what they can do for their community, their country, their world,” Enda Kenny said. Addressing that iconic term, Mná na hÉireann, which she used in her inaugural speech as president, he said: “I know a woman who came home from London by coach and boat so she could say to her own children, in time, that she voted for Ireland’s first woman President, Mary Robinson.” He continued: “Mná na hEireann might never have called themselves that before but they knew who they were and they knew what they were and they came out in force to put one of their own in the Áras. And by that I don’t mean gender alone. I mean someone who incorporated their values. Someone who spent their life and career defending the dignity of the individual, promoting their rights, reminding them of their responsibilities as individuals and as part of the human family. Someone who made equality not just an issue or a headline but who made it a human and civil right in this country.” “This book shows clearly Mary’s belief that everybody does indeed matter and that what we do now, the decisions we take now, may well decide not just the quality of life for future generations but whether those generations will even exist in the future on this planet at all,” he remarked. After the official launch by Enda Kenny, veteran broadcaster and journalist, Olivia O’Leary interviewed Mary Robinson and reflected on many significant events in her life. She thanked Enda Kenny, but spoke first about the beautiful choral service in the cathedral the previous night.

A

n innovative partnership between IT Sligo and the Irish Prison Board was recognised this week when 10 Institute staff were presented with a National Award for Excellence in Teaching at a special ceremony in Dublin Castle. The IT Sligo team was honoured by the National Academy for Integration, Research and Learning (NAIRTL) for their role in designing and teaching the Higher Certificate in Custodial Care (HCCC), a programme designed for prison officers working for the Irish Prison Service. Fifteen Higher Education staff representing six different Higher Education Institutions were recognised at the awards, with five in-

dividual awards presented, as well as one team award for IT Sligo. There were 32 nominations from 14 HE Institutions. The IPS and IT Sligo commenced delivery of the HCCC in September 2007 and since then 740 prison staff have enrolled for the programme, which is delivered over a two year period through a mix of professional and vocational training. Fergus Timmons, Manager of the Programme, said it was the first time IT Sligo had received one of the NAIRTL awards and he described it as a great honour for the Institute. He pointed out that the programme had been developed from scratch, being the first of its kind in the country, reflecting the

flexible, adaptive and dynamic learning environment at IT Sligo. “The HCCC is very much a collaboration with the IPS. It is a social science course which covers sociology, criminology, psychology, ethics, and health studies and there is a big emphasis on professional development and professional practices”, said Mr Timmons. The Chair of the HCC programme is Dr Kevin Sludds, a qualified therapist and contributor to the Government’s strategy on suicide prevention. Other members of the team include Sinead Barrins who lectures in advocacy and communications, Ethics lecturer, Finola Colgan-Carey, Dr Marcus Hopkins who runs the Humanising Conflict Group for those affected by conflict from

any political or religious background and lecturer Dr Liam Leonard who is the current President of the Sociology Association of Ireland. Also involved are lecturer Paula Kenny, Treasurer of the Sociology Association of Ireland, Jessica Mannion a part-time Lecturer on both the Custodial Care and Social Studies courses in IT Sligo, Maresa McGee who has a BSc in Biochemistry and an MSc in Neuropharmacology and works as a Health Sciences lecturer in the Institute and Sinéad Meade, a member of the Psychology Society of Ireland who teaches communications, psychology, and professional practice and development to the prison staff.

Councillor hits out at ‘inconsistent planning decisions’ AN independent member of Mayo County Council has launched a fresh broadside on what he described as ‘inconsistent planning decisions’ by the authority. Councillor Frank Durcan hit out that a couple failed to obtain planning permission for a dwelling at Cloonconra, Straide, Foxford. Yet, he claimed, a family member of an elected representative got approval for a similar development on a site nearby. Speaking at a meeting of the Castlebar electoral area committee, Councillor Durcan repeated previous allegations he had made in respect of planning decisions in the county which he deemed to be ‘utter corrupt’. He challenged the council ‘to take him to court’ where he would ‘have no problem in proving his allegations to a judge’. He also called on the council ‘to report him to the ethics committee’. “The days of Irish freedom are long gone as couples are being placed in limbo by inconsistent planning decisions. I am not going to stand for it any longer. “The couple in question were told to withdraw their application as they would be refused planning permission. That’s wrong”, said Councillor Durcan.

Sligo Protest over Home Help Cuts

H

UNDREDS joined in protest at the HSE offices in Sligo last week against cuts which it is claimed will mean a loss of 10,000 home help hours each months in Sligo/Leitrim. Last month the HSE announced plans to make savings of 130 million euro in the health service, between now and the end of the year. The Cathaoirleach of Sligo

County Council, Councillor Veronica Cawley, has condemned the HSE for looking after the interests of private profiteers instead of members of the public Speaking to local media Declan Ferry, industrial organiser with SIPTU’s health division, said: "The most vulnerable in our society are again being hit hard by this Government, we have 1,600 clients in Sligo receiving home help and over

400 carers providing the service. The loss of these hours will have a knock-on effect on the economy of Sligo." Mr Ferry advised home helps against being coerced into providing free hours in their work and said that the 'government should be concentrating on creating a fair tax system that also looks at the more wealthy in our society.' The HSE said in a statement that it was facing “an ex-

tremely challenging financial situation” and a 4.5 per cent reduction in home help hours was being targeted nationally. It hoped to achieve this “through a more rigorous approach to ensure that the people most in need receive these supports”. Independent Socialist Cllr Declan Bree, who marched in solidarity with the protesting home helps, said: “The Government decision to cut back the Home Help Service cannot be justified under any circumstances. Instead of proposing cut backs the Government should be making good on their commitment to provide additional care in the community for older people in need. The HSE has constantly said that care provision in people’s homes is the preferred option. However the proposed cut backs will have the opposite effect and will inevitably lead to increased hospital admission and increased costs. “The consequences of these cuts will be earlier admissions to nursing homes, longer stays in acute hospitals and anguish for families who need support to care at home for relatives suffering illness, frailty or disability. “Elderly people receiving home help services and the Home Help workers who provide the service need the support of the general public. The Government’s proposed cuts must now be reversed.” said Cllr Bree.

Return of Tops of the Town IF you can remember the Tops of the Town then you are likely to be at least 40. But the good news is the national amateur variety competition is set to make a return to the North West in 2013. The competition established in 1962 was a nationwide favorite and ran for thirty-threeyears until June 1996. Competition organisers are encouraging stage schools, youth groups, community groups and everyone from five years up to compete for a prize fund of twenty thousand euro. Closing date for receipt of entries is Wednesday 31 October, 2012. Gerry Quinn of Variety Ireland says the Tops of the Town revival will have something for communities and groups from all around the country.

Families struggling and children “going hungry” A new report reveals that child poverty is on the increase in Galway and the Society for St. Vincent de Paul say that a growing number of families in Galway are becoming caught in the poverty trap. Almost one-in-five households with children were at risk of poverty compared to one-in-eight childless households, according to a new report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Over 200,000 children are living in poverty nationally and a growing number of families in Galway are struggling to provide basic necessities for their children in the current recession. The report found that households with children were facing a drop in income and an increased risk of poverty at a national level. “That would be reflected here,” confirmed Madge McGreal, Acting Area Administrator with SVP Galway. “We have an increase in single parents coming into us. About 40% or 50% of our clients would be single parents or two-parent families who are on social welfare. Two of the factors assessed in judging the risk

of poverty are a household’s ability to provide food and heat, and many families in Galway are struggling to provide these basic necessities. “People are coming in hungry. One woman who came in recently had only 40c to feed her three kids for the week.” The cuts to the fuel allowance for those on social welfare and the rising costs of electricity, oil and gas have left growing numbers of Galway families struggling to heat their homes. “A good number of people coming in here cannot pay their ESB bills or put oil in their tanks and that would be a lot of our clients. “Our clients would have gone up by over 30%.” Ms McGreal believes that any government plans to cut social welfare or the children’s allowances would be “very short sighted” and would have far reaching consequences. “I think it is really hitting families,” she said, noting that working families would also suffer. “We have people coming in who are employed and who have never had to seek help from us before.”

Scullion bring ‘LONG WAVE’ to Sligo

SCULLION, one of the most popular and influential bands to emerge in Ireland, have recorded a new collection of songs and to celebrate the band will be embarking this Autumn on their most extensive tour for many years coming to the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo on Friday 12th October at 8pm. The Tour will follow the launch of their new album “Long Wave” at Triskel Christchurch in Cork on the 27th September. The Album is their first in over 20 years, and includes a new version of Philip King’s “Fear” and an instrumental by Robbie Overson, among other new tracks. This group of musicians, Sonny Condell, Robbie Overson and Philip King remain true to their eclectic musical roots, they are nourished by tradition, translate and deconstruct it, and transmit an individual musical experience for capacity audiences whenever they choose to perform.

The show at the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Friday 12th of October promises to be special, intimate, warm and uplifting. Speaking about the tour and the new album, band member Philip King said “there will be new music and a journey through the band's back pages.” The music and songs of Sonny Condell are the foundation of the unique Scullion sound. His artistry is the creative beating heart of the trio, a trio that makes a mighty sound. These evenings will celebrate that sound. Tickets for Scullion at the Hawk’s Well Theatre are €20 and are available from the Box Office on 071 916158 or www.hawkswell.com. “Three decades equals a remarkable repertoire in Scullion's world, most of it drawn from the creative genius of Condell, whose subtle lyricism and matchless melody lines bear scant kinship to anyone else on the planet” Irish Times

Death of Archdeacon Sean Durcan WIDESPREAD regret and tributes have been expressed following the death at the weekend of the Very Rev. Archdeacon Séan Durkan, Ballina. Archdeacon Durkan was, undoubtedly, one of the best known priests in the Killala Diocese and a former chairman of the Mayo GAA County Board. In the 1960s he served for a number of years as CC in Rathduff in the Parish of Backs and he played a key role in the development of the Knockmore GAA Club. Indeed, he was also a key backroom figure in the successful Knockmore GAA team of the late 1970s. Renowned for his exuberance and enthusiasm, particularly in sporting matters, he retained a permanent interest in his native Knockmore. Expressing sadness at his passing, many commentators at the weekend felt it was

apt that Mayo GAA appeared to be reaching a pinnacle just when one their most ardent supporters was moving on to greater things. Another former chairman of the Mayo GAA County Board and of Knockmore GAA and active in GAA nationally, Paddy Naughton, paid a warm tribute to the Archdeacon on Midwest Radio. He said Sean Durkin always demanded high standards and will be sadly missed in his native Knockmore and in the wider counties of Mayo and Sligo where he worked. Retired for a number of years, Archdeacon Durkan also served in a number of parishes in the diocese, always taking an active role in community development. After Requiem Mass at St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina, on Tuesday, he was laid to rest in the grounds of the Cathedral.

A

fter an outrageously funny evening last October, Basil, Sybil and Manuel make a welcome return for the 4th year running to The Royal Theatre on the 5th and 6th of October after selling out for the last 3 years. Faulty Towers the Dining Experience is a hilarious 5-star international show and is back for two nights only to serve you dinner and a feast of comic delights. So if you ever wondered what it would be like to dine at

Faulty Towers, now you can find out. Enter the snobbish world of manic Basil; his domineering wife Sybil; and their hopeless language-challenged waiter Manuel. Be one of the steady stream of bemused guest trying to make Manuel understand what it is you want. Asking for an ice bucket ends up with you being presented with a “nice bucket”. A Simple procedure like opening a bottle of wine can become a huge drama. One-third of the show is scripted and

the remaining two-thirds are improvised so no two shows are the same. They had us in absolute stitches last year so we can’t wait to see what lies in store this season. Rude waiting staff, a rat in the kitchen, unidentified floating objects in the soup, diners with no forks, others with no spoons for their soup, usually means a meal from hell but they also add up to an unforgettable show, Faulty style service of course. Each of the three actors is a keen impersonator of their respective characters and much of the show’s enjoyment comes from watching how well they can take off Basil, Sybil and Manuel. Everything that can go wrong will……. In fact this can best be described as organised chaos bundled into two hours of gut – busting laughter” whilst at the same time, enjoying a light meal. There will be a Champagne reception on arrival at 7pm and shortly afterwards Basil and Sybil will take everyone to their seats. Tickets €50 are on sale now from the Royal Theatre by calling 094 90 23111. All Details are on the Royal Theatre Website so log onto www.RoyalTheatre.ie Full Sit down Meal is provided so please advise of any dietary requirements. Paralympics proved to be online hit

The London 2012 Paralympic Games proved to be a stellar online success, enjoying record-breaking hits on its website and social media channels. According to figures released by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), almost two million people visited the official Paralympics website during the Games - with day one of competition seeing more online hits than the entire Beijing Paralympic Games. One in six visitors came from the host country, with the United States, Germany, Poland and Canada making up the top five visiting countries. Videos of the sporting action and medal ceremonies uploaded to the IPC's YouTube channel received nearly nine million views, and Google+ and Flickr pages made live before the opening ceremony now have over 50,000 followers and page views. Talk of the Games also dominated Twitter, with 1.5 million Tweets mentioning 'Paralympics' during competition time. Such online attention is unprecedented in Paralympic history, and has had a hand in raising the profiles of the athletes. Irish sprinter, and fastest Paralympian on the planet, Jason Smyth enjoyed 2,174% growth in Facebook fans while golden boy of the Games, T44 100m champion Jonnie Peacock, saw his fan page grow by 3,258% during the 12 days of competition. Cyclist Sarah Storey, who took four golds in London, placing her alongside Tanni Grey-Thompson as one of Britain's most decorated Paralympians, saw a 178% growth in her online followers. The IPC'S Craig Spence said: "We said prior to the Games that we expected London 2012 to be a digital Games however even these numbers have surpassed our expectations. "By embracing new technologies and media it is not just the IPC who enjoyed astronomical figures during the greatest Paralympic Games ever but so have international sport federations, National Paralympic Committees and LOCOG."

New iPhone 5 set to be best-seller

T

he latest iPhone goes on sale soon and is already guaranteed to be a bestseller. Apple reported pre-orders for the new iPhone 5 around the

world of two million in just 24 hours and said demand was so great many customers would not get them until mid October. The phone, which is thinner and lighter than previous mod-

els can use the newly-announced 4G network which is yet to come to Ireland. It will go on sale soon. The phone, which weighs in at 112g, has a 4in screen - half an

inch bigger than previous models and has a new, more powerful A6 chip. Its voice control software Siri, first unveiled in the iPhone 4S, has been updated so users can ask it to recommend films and restaurants and update their Facebook accounts verbally. The 4G network - which offers speeds up to five times faster than 3G - will allow uninterrupted access to the web on the go, high definition films to be downloaded in minutes and TV to be streamed without buffering. The battle for domination of the mobile and tablet market has become increasingly heated recently with Apple's competitors taking it on with a series of new products. Nokia and Microsoft recently joined forces to launch two new phones which will run on the Windows operating system and online retailer Amazon unveiled new models of its Kindle Fire tablets, which were previously not for sale in the UK, and are seen as rivals to Apple's bestselling iPad.

Nintendo's Wii U launch date set Nintendo has a knack for changing the course of video games, appealing to the masses from kids to grandparents even if its technology isn't the most advanced. The creator of Mario Bros and Donkey Kong said on Thursday that it will launch its first highdefinition gaming console on November 18 in the US, later that month in Europe and on December 8 in Japan. It's the first major game console to launch in years. But Nintendo is merely catching up on HD with Sony and Microsoft, which began selling their own HD consoles six and seven years ago, respectively. The question is whether a touch-screen tablet controller, coupled with TVwatching features, will be enough to surpass them. The original Wii console revolutionised gaming and surpassed its rivals not because it had more power or better graphics, but because it gave people a new way to play. Its motion-sensing con-

troller was not the most advanced, but it got people off the couch, swinging virtual tennis rackets, bowling and flailing around in living rooms around the world. But over the years the novelty faded even as the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 have managed to keep loyal, hardcore gamers enthused with massive shooters and multi-player features. Whether the Wii U can bring people back will depend on Nintendo's ability to lure people in with classic games from Mario to Call of Duty, entertainment features that go beyond gaming and a price that doesn't break the bank. Nintendo first announced plans for the Wii U last year, but it had not disclosed the price or availability date until Thursday. The Wii U will start at 300 US dollars (ÂŁ185) for a basic model, which is just 50 US dollars more than what the Wii initially sold for. For 350 US dollars, gamers can buy a deluxe version that is

black instead of white. The deluxe model will also have a charging stand for its controller, 32GB of memory instead of 8GB and Nintendo Land, a smorgasbord of 12 popular Nintendo games. Nintendo has been trying to drum up excitement for the Wii U. What sets it apart from other

consoles is the tablet-like Wii U GamePad. This controller allows for asymmetrical gameplay, so two or more people can play the same game but have different experiences. Players can also turn off the TV entirely and play on the GamePad, watching the game on the tablet's screen and using the controllers on the sides.*

London cinema hires team of ninjas to keep noisy film fans quiet

Nothing is too much of a stretch for Britain's bendiest woman

Morph-suited ninjas are keeping noisy film fans quiet at one London venue to help enforce better cinema etiquette.

T

he Prince Charles Cinema in the capital's Leicester Square is clamping down on inconsiderate filmgoers with the help of a team of 'cinema ninjas'. Anyone caught flouting the rules will be targeted by an army of volunteers dressed in

black skintight lycra suits, who in return for their time can watch films for free. The novel idea came from the firm Morphsuits, which helped with the clean-up operation following last year's London riots. Co-founder Gregor Lawson, explained: 'I

thought I'd find a cinema and see if we could bring a light-hearted taskforce to the aid of movie fans.' Loud popcorn crunching and failing to switch off your mobile phone are just some of the rules which, if broken, can land you in trouble with the Morphsuit squad. Paul Vickery, head of public relations for the cinema, said the scheme had been a great success so far. 'The cinema ninjas may sound ludicrous, but they have been a real success in clamping down on those ruining films for everyone else with inconsiderate behaviour,' he said. 'Like every cinema, we were irritated and upset by the minority of people running films for everyone else.' Morphsuit volunteer Catherine Small said the zero-tolerance policy on noise creates a better film-watching environment. 'The role of a ninja is to help the cinema stop any naughty behaviour,' she said. 'We've all been there in cinemas when people are throwing popcorn and and getting their phones out.' She added: 'It's all about cinema etiquette and making people have a great experience and hopefully enhance the experience. 'So if we can stop the people from being naughty then everyone else can enjoy it. 'We will quietly sneak up on them, obviously not wanting to scare anyone and we'll give them a little tap and explain why they are doing something wrong.'

Fleet of Ferraris break world record for most expensive traffic jam SNAKING around Silverstone, 964 Ferrari owners have set a new world record for the biggest ever supercar parade. The most expensive traffic jam of all-time is led by Formula 1 Ferrari driver Felipe Massa at the wheel of a black Ferrari 458 Spider. Petrolheads gathered at Silverstone race circuit in Northamptonshire to see the record of 490 set in Japan four years ago comprehensively smashed. Featuring models from the last 40 years, the total fleet boasted more than 500,000 horsepower. So many

Ferraris took part there was only 250m of road free on the 5.8km track. Dave Whiteley, 61, from Birmingham, who drove his 1983 Ferrari 308, said: ‘I've never seen so many Ferraris in one place and I've been a member of the Ferrari Owner's Club for 14 years. 'It's incredible, a lot of people appreciate Ferraris and this has made a lot of people's day. I took part in the 2007 record and then the Japanese beat it. He added: 'Hopefully today has made it impossible for them to beat. It has been exceptional.'

MOST people’s arms have to be twisted when it comes to doing the household chores. Piles of washing and ironing send Pixie Le Knot round the bend – but she couldn’t be happier. Britain’s most flexible woman has crafted a career out of her ability to contort into eye-watering positions. And in these images the 24-year-old – real name Jennifer Keith – shows off her dexterity around the home. In one shot she loads the washing machine while bent over backwards, while others show her doing the dishes and helping with the ironing. She said: ‘I was always the most flexible child in the class and knew I had a gift as soon as I took up dance and gymnastics as a kid. It’s fun being able to do something other people can’t. But I really don’t know where I got the natural ability from – all my relatives are doctors.’ Ms Le Knot, from Leyton, London, spends several hours every day training her body to cope with the physical demands of contortion before performing up to five live shows a week. She recently appeared in horror film The Devil Inside and became a contortionist after a chance meeting with a circus performer five years ago. ‘People do say I sit in positions which look really uncomfortable,’ she said. ‘But I do hate it when people ask me if I can get into a box. There’s so much more to the art form than that.’

Robbers make off with 20c piggy bank WEARING masks to cover their faces, maybe from embarrassment, the bungling duo also escaped with two bars of chocolate to complete their disappointing haul. Police in the western German city of Dusseldorf said the panicked pair ran away when they set off an alarm as they tried to open a till before grabbing what they could. Relieved shopkeeper Mehdi Eghbali told German newspaper Bild that the robbers failed to get their hands on any large amounts of loot. 'While the pair's sevenand-a-bit pence each may not go very far, at least they had some chocolate snacks to cheer them up on the way home!

Earache and natural cures

O

talgia or earache can occur for a multitude of reasons. The buildup of pressure in the eustachian tube is one of the top causes of earache. Usually the eustachian tube drains fluids out of the middle ear through the back of the throat. Sometimes a cold, allergy or sore throat can cause the eustachian tube to swell up and shut. Tonsillitis and sinus infections also result in earache, especially among children. Sometimes high altitudes or rapid change in altitude, as when flying, can cause earache. Earache can be an indication of obstruction of the ear canal with a foreign object or earwax. It also may also indicate a perfo-

rated or broken eardrum, because of a blow to the head, infection in the inner ear, suction applied to the ear or the insertion of a foreign object into the ear. Swimmers ear is also a common ear infection. It is an infection of the outer ear structures and happens because water is trapped in the ear canal. Bacteria multiply in the ear canal, causing infection and irritation. In this case the treatment of earache requires treatment of the infection. There are many homeopathic and herbal solutions traditionally used in the treatment of earache. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that these have a good effect. Bel-

ladonna, a homeopathic medicine is recommended for a throbbing earache, while Chamomilla is given to babies who are also teething. Some common herbal cures used in the treatment of earache are echinacea and goldenseal herbal combination formula. Echinacea and goldenseal are essentially antiviral and they stimulate the immune system. Garlic, an antibacterial, and may be useful in the treatment of earache through helping to heal an ear infection. A few drops of garlic juice in sesame oil is heated and put into the ear to clear up any infection. Mullein oil is a traditional Native American cure which reduces swelling and inflammation. The oil is warmed to just above body temperature and one or two drops are put into the affected ear. It is important to remember that earaches could be an indication of more complicated problems. If persistent or accompanied by fever, a qualified doctor should be consulted. The treatment of earache, if persistent, usually requires a prescribed antibiotic course and possibly eardrops.

update your

kitchen with new worktops

• You can also buy upstands and splashbacks to complete the look. You can opt for a varity of materials including wood, composite and natural materials. Deciding what worktop will work best in your new kitchen can be a little hit and miss. This is where you want to find a supplier who is willing to send you samples. You will want to see how it works against your new kitchen doors and whether it catches the light or absorbs it. A new worktop is an investment, so getting the colour and material right is important. Fitting your worktop It is true that fitting a worktop can be a difficult task, but only if you are attempting to make invisible corner joints. If you are an experienced DIYer you may be able to attempt this yourself. Worktop fitting jigs can be purchased from DIY stores or even hired especially for the job. The jig

allows you to cut the perfect angle for your worktop corners allowing you to fit two sections together at a ninety degree angle. You will also need coloured adhesive to disguise the joints. Having your previous worktop as a template will help you to make the right cuts. Of course if you feel this may be too difficult for you, getting a tradesman in to do this one job may not be too expensive. It is unlikely to take a good tradesman longer than one or two days to fit your new worktop and this might even be a cost which is met by the savings you have made on your new kitchen. Adding new worktops and kitchen doors to your existing kitchen design will give you the best of both worlds. You will get a great looking kitchen which feels new and looks stylish and you will be getting it at a fraction of the cost of a brand new kitchen where everything is replaced. The choice is yours!

H

ow do you get a brand new looking kitchen without paying brand new kitchen prices? The answer is replace your kitchen doors and your kitchen worktops. You may be wondering how this is any different to installing an entirely new kitchen and how it could possibly be any cheaper. Well, read on for an explanation of exactly how this can work for you. Many of us expect that a new kitchen means that all the units, worktops, appliances and sinks needs to be ripped out and new versions put back in. It doesn’t have to be this way. In fact most of your kitchen can be reused or even left exactly where it is. You can replace just your kitchen doors and the worktops and you kitchen will look like it has had a complete makeover. You may consider that replacing the kitchen doors via an online kitchen door replacement company is enough to get the wow factor. If your worktops are still in great condition this may be the case. But

often the simple act of replacing your kitchen doors can highlight the fact that your worktop has seen better days too. So replacing both together is a great idea. New worktop benefits Getting your worktop from your kitchen door supplier is a good move for lots of reasons: • They will have worktops which match well with the doors they sell. • They often sell worktops which come in a variety of lengths. This eliminates or reduces waste compared to the larger DIY stores where you must buy one standard length regardless of how much you actually require. • You can get a variety of thicknesses to suit the profile of your units and the position of your tiles.

Benefits of home insulation

If you want to save significant money on your energy costs you need to have home insulation as part of your plan of action.

I

T is a reality that if your home is more than five years old it is probably under insulated. With the expense of energy today your home needs to be well insulated to protect you from the loss of heat in the winter time and to keep your house cooler in the summer time. Homes older than five years old probably did not have enough insulation in the attic or have the proper R value. Now is the perfect time to check your insulation and add new insulation if needed. The most common type of home insulation today for an attic is Fibeglass quilt insulation. This will offer significant protection for your home. You can also add additional protection by using roll foil and even polyurethane foam in other areas of your home. Foam is particularly great for those hard to reach areas in tight spots and cracks. Roll foil can be used underneath the basement ceiling for good protection. You should also take the time to check your roof for damage and replace any faulty roof tiles or slates. Reflective tape and insulated tape is always a good idea for pipes and outside walls where any wires or cables enter your home. There are also other benefits of home insulation that you might not have considered. Insulation acts as a sound barrier as well. This can help to lower the noise levels in your home. It is also additional protection from fire and the spread of fire. Good home insulation will also add value to your home. The resale value of homes with proper insulation is higher than those homes with little insulation protection. It will add comfort and security to your home.

Overall, insulation is a great investment for any home. The cost of insulation and installing it is small compared to the returns you will receive. With good insulation you will be helping to protect the environment by saving energy as well as saving yourself money every month. About Better Energy Homes As with all schemes administered by SEAI, the Better Energy Homes scheme is subject to continuous review with the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources with respect to programme objectives. To date over €115m has been paid in grant support towards 270,000 upgrade measures in 110,000 homes. There is also a noted continued downward trend in the typical cost of works, particularly in the case of wall insulation. Therefore after a review with the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources a number of scheme revisions have been agreed, which have now come into effect. The two key changes to the scheme are: Revised grant amounts for all wall insulation types and Building Energy Rating (BER) Internal and external wall insulation grants will no longer be one single amount, but rather be based upon the house type. Grants for attic insulation and all heating system upgrades including solar remain unchanged. What grants are available? Grants are available to eligible applicants for undertaking the following works, in accordance with the requirements contractor

Code of Practice Technical Specification. Energy Efficient Works Attic Insulation...€200 Wall Insulation - Cavity...€250 Wall Insulation - Internal Dry Lining Apartment (any) /Mid- terrace House... €900 Semi-detached or End of Terrace...€1,350 Detached House...€1,800 Wall Insulation - External Apartment (any) or Mid- terrace House...€1,800 Semi-detached or End of Terrace...€2,700 Detached House...€3,600 Heating System Heating Controls with Boiler (Oil or Gas) Upgrade...€560 Heating Controls Upgrade only...€400 Solar Heating...€800 Building Energy Rating (BER)...€50 ***Cash Grants are set value unless expenditure is below the set value, in which case the actual expenditure will be reimbursed. **A Building Energy Rating (BER) is an integral part of all grant applications under the Better Energy Homes scheme, whereby homeowners must undertake a BER on their home after grant aided works have been completed. A homeowner is entitled to BER funding of €50 once per home. This funding will be applied to your grant application automatically provided you have never applied previously for BER funding. You will be informed during the online grant application process if BER funding is available for your home or as part of your Letter of Grant Offer if you have applied through the post. It is advisable that you apply for and undertake all planned grant

aided works at the same time to minimise the costs of multiple BER assessments. *** From December 8th 2011 internal and external wall insulation grants will no longer be one single amount, but rather be based upon the house type. Please note the minimum grant amount for the first application must be €400. A BER grant, where applicable, does not count towards the €400 minimum. In the instance where a Contractor is completing works within his own home then only the cost of materials will be deemed qualifying expenditure.Grants are claimed after the measures are completed and the contractor has been paid by or entered a financing agreement with the homeowner. Living room

furniture at a glance I

f the dining room furniture is the most often used furniture in the house, then the living room is often the room where the family spends most of it's time. It is a

multi functional room as it is for relaxing and also less formal entertaining. Living room furniture needs to be hard wearing since it gets such use,

yet this should not be allowed to stop the room from being stylishly decorated. What is considered living room furniture? Living room furniture is made up of a wide variety of different pieces of furniture including the following: • Settee and foot stool sets, • Coffee tables, • Book cases, • Mirrors, • Occasional tables, • Sideboards, • Display units, • Lamps and other ornaments, • TV stands and cabinets, • Fireplaces,

• Statues and hearth decorations, • Rugs and floor adornments. There are as many combinations of furniture as there are people. With the variety of furniture available, combined with the room size and shape, it is possible to create a truly original living space. How to furnish your living room Furnishing a living room can be a tricky exercise, and is one that requires quite a deal of thought and planning. For many homes the living room is the showcase. The first consideration is the size and shape of the room and

included in this consideration is also location of door(s), window(s), radiators and fireplace. When these have been taken into account you will have a good idea of what configuration of furniture will best fit into and complement your living room. You should also set a budget guideline at an early stage to help narrow down the possibilities a little. Stick to a style. With your basic living room furniture it is best to use a common theme throughout. You can introduce different ideas through the accessories you choose to go with the basic furniture.

he heating industry is changing with an increased move towards energy efficient and enviornmentally friendly products. The emphasis is now on efficiency, with the new rating of new homes. Oil still remains the most popular choice among householders. Oil is a versatile fossil fuel, which is easy to store and cleaner than coal. Modern oil systems are among the cleanest of combustion devices. Heating oil is environmentally benign, is biodegradable and carcinogen free. Gas prices are expensive, but it guarantees a constant supply of fuel, even when electricity fails. Gas is a highly efficient fuel that is piped directly into the home, meaning there is no need to store fuel on site. Gas boilers need regular services, to ensure they run efficiently.Gas fireplaces are also a very good option for the sitting room. As they do not

produce smoke, they can be a great option for people with asthma or who are sensitive to air pollution. In terms of safety, Gas fireplaces will shut down the gas supply if a pilot light blows out. Assuming your gas line is installed according to code, the chance of a mishap is virtually nonexistent. Many people feel that there is nothing that can match the look, feel and smell of a woodburning fireplace, which spreads a warmth around the house, not just in the room. Solid fuel open fires are reliable. Regardless of the weather, you never have to worry about supply. It’s tempting to go with a solid fuel open fire, a simple, dependable, renewable resource that’s been available to us since the beginning of time. Unfortunately, some of the heat from an open fire is wasted, as it goes up the chimney. However, the use of the chimney will induce ventilation into a home drawing fresh air and removing polluted air. The ventilation reduces the risk of hay fever, asthma and eczema. Burning wood or coal emits particles, however they have become friendlier to the environment in recent years with the advent of smokeless fuels. Fireplaces once meant chimneys, venting, plumbing

and masonry work, but the advent of electric fireplaces, coupled with advances in cabinetry and technology have made them a smart choice for apartment dwellers. Electric fireplaces create the ambience associated with solid fuel open fires for the fraction of the cost. Electric fireplace simulate the flames of traditional fireplaces. Literally, nothing is being burnt and the illusion of burning is achieved through the use of audio and visual effects. They are an instant source of heat, as they come to life with the flick of a button. They also are 100% efficient. Electric fireplaces are relatively more environment-friendly than wood burning units, as they don't emit any fumes. However, they are not carbon neutral, as electricity that is utilized by these fireplaces comes from the grid, which also emits greenhouse gases. Due to increasing awareness of environmental issues combined with energy prices, people are turning to stoves and burners. Wood stoves come in all shapes and sizes and burn wood efficiently and cleanly compared to traditional types of solid fuel fires. They can produce maximum heat, using less fuel. Wooden stoves are a cost effective heating system. Stoves have a negative pressure system that propel hot air outward, reducing the need for a large chimney to channel smoke out of the home. Fitted Wardrobes with Sliding Doors shelves and flimsy cabinets are usually the items that come to mind. Not only are these fairly limited in terms of creating real additional space, they often impair the overall style and feel that has been created in the room. This is where fitted wardrobes with sliding doors really come into their own. Not only do they create substantial amounts of additional space for everything from clothing and footwear to spare bedding and linen, they can be fitted in a style that complements and enhances your current style and bedroom atmosphere. inding enough space around the home these days is as difficult as finding more time to yourself or more money to treat yourself with. We all search for it, but it somehow always remains just beyond our grip. Luckily, there are a few simple and cost effective things we can do to create more space around the house. Here we take a look at one of the most long term investments you can make in a home that will radically free up more space in the bedroom: fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. makeover in years to come. For instance, if you prefer a modern and sleek interior design scheme, bold black glass sliding wardrobe doors are perfectly matched to enhance the masculine design scheme. Alternatively, if you like light, open spaces, a sliding door in classic cream and walnut colour schemes should complement your own design scheme perfectly. Fitted wardrobes are a fairly permanent alteration, meaning they are naturally more expensive than some of your other spacesaving measures. This means they are inappropriate if you're only renting a property, or planning to move to a new home shortly. However, they do help to add considerable value to the sale price of any building - after all, we can never have too much space and this is something which all prospective buyers will prioritise when viewing properties.
