L
AST week say the launch of a joint campaign by drinkaware.ie and Irish Water Safety to raise awareness ahead of the summer of the dangers of mixing alcohol and water-based activities. With the weather getting warmer, the launch provides a timely reminder to everybody of the need for safety on the water. On average, 140 people drown in Ireland every year and Galway and Mayo have the unenviable record as being among the top counties in terms of death by drowning. Also, for people between the ages of 5 and 24, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death. It doesn’t have to be that way though. Most water-related accidents can be avoided by knowing how to stay safe and following a few simple guidelines. Learning how to swim is essential if you plan on being on or near water. Toddlers and young children should always be supervised in or near water. Many deaths occur, as we know, in just a few inches of water. With children, also, who usually have tender skin, the regular application of sunscreen is essential. Sun reflecting off the water or off sand can intensify the burning rays. Kids may not feel sunburned when the water feels cool and refreshing, but the pain will catch up later. Even for “older children” some basic guidelines apply:: Swim in safe areas only: It is advisable to swim only in places that are supervised by a lifeguard. No one can anticipate changing ocean currents, rip currents, sudden storms or other hidden dangers. Continued on Page 2

140 people drown in Ireland every year continued from front page
Buddy up: Always swim with a partner, every time – whether you’re swimming in a backyard pool or in a lake. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or get muscle cramps, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. Know your limits: You will probably want to stay in the water as long as possible. If you’re not a good swimmer, or a learner, don’t go in water that’s so deep you can’t touch the bottom . . and don’t try to keep up with skilled swimmers. Be careful about diving: Diving injuries can cause permanent spinal
cord damage, paralysis, and sometimes even death. Pay attention to “No Diving” signs as it means the water isn’t safe for a head-first entry. Feet first might be a better option, but even so make sure there are no hidden rocks or other hazards. Drink plenty of fluids: It’s easy to get dehydrated in the sun, particularly if you’re active and sweating. Keep up with fluids, particularly water, to prevent dehydration. Getting too cool: It’s also possible to get too cool. Your body temperature drops far more quickly in water than it does on land. If you feel your body
start to shiver or your muscles cramp up, get out of the water quickly; it doesn’t take too long for hypothermia to set in. Alcohol and water don’t mix: At the start we spoke about the dangers of alcohol and water-based activities. In fact alcohol is involved in up to half of all water-related deaths. Alarmingly, half of all adolescent male drowning are tied to alcohol use. Finally, the pool and the beach are great places to learn new skills, have fun and check out everyone’s new bathing suit. However, being prepared for the possible hazards will make you feel more comfortable.

Tumbling Bones continue Irish tour
F
rom Maine on the coast of northeast USA, TUMBLING BONES play a mix of down-home, old-fashioned American traditional and folk music that belies the youth of its three band members. But their folk is no museum piece; it is living, breathing music infused with a little of the contemporary rock ‘n’ roll the fellas were reared on and reworked into their original arrangements and compositions. Tumbling Bones have a passion for the heritage of American music and a penchant for honest, no frills-attached acoustic music. Ireland is becoming a second home for Tumbling Bones due to the hospitality and appreciation the Irish have for American traditional & roots music. The band have made a trip from their home state of Maine to tour Ireland for the second time from May 17th to June 16th. They will appear at the Westport Bluegrass Festival
and Mannions, Balla, in mid-June. Founding members Pete and Jake will be joined by their newest band member, songwriter Kyle on guitar and vocals. The band last toured here in summer 2012 following the release of their second album Schemes. That tour was a smashing success packing in 19 dates over 22 days Taking influence from a broad range of styles including old country and bluegrass, jug band blues as well as classic songsmiths like the Beatles, Tumbling Bones original songs reflect a mix of traditional influences as well as contemporary. As Pete says “Really the only rule we have for picking material is that it sparks us. As a result, our music is pretty diverse: one song might be an old gospel song or mountain ballad, the next a rockabilly number, and the next might be a Motown song.”
Founders Pete and Jake met a decade ago when they were placed together at random as roommates at Vassar College. Sharing a love for bluegrass, blues and trad, these road warriors have toured all over the United States from busking on street corners to several nationwide tours through to an acclaimed performance on the National Public Radio (NPR) program A Prairie Home Companion. The formation of Tumbling Bones in Maine was the result of an impromptu allnight recording session with Pete and Jake, and fiddler Sam McDougle in the winter of 2011. The ensuing debut album Risk Not Your Soul reached the top ten on the Roots Music Report's folk radio chart a phenomenal achievement for a newly formed group. Just recently Tumbling Bones were invited to audition for the prestigious American Musicians Abroad program, a U.S. State Departmentfunded program that sends 10 American bands overseas every year to perform and lead music workshops for school-age children. The remaining western dates of their tour are as follows: SAT JUNE 8TH: THE HELIUM FESTIVAL, MAIN ST., BALLYMAHON, LONGFORD 5pm Tickets E40 www.heliumfestival.com SAT JUNE 8TH SKELLY'S PUB, MAIN ST., BALLYMAHON, LONGFORD Midnight Free. 22-camera CCTV system should make Ballina a safer place BALLINA will have a 22-camera CCTV system and local Sergent Amanda Gaynor believes that“People will feel Ballina is a safer town to live in.” That was the view of the sergeant as she made a presentation on the community based scheme to Ballina Town Council last week. Sergeant Gaynor said years of dedication and setbacks have been worth it and gave a detailed presentation about the 22 camera scheme to the Council. The Council heard that the system will be linked up to screens in the Garda Station which will allow Gardaí to review incidents, enlarge images and even pan, tilt and zoom some of the cameras around the town. Some benefits of the scheme outlined were an increasing confidence among business owners, a feeling of safety,
assisting community alert groups and developing a safer tourism environment. Sgt Gaynor explained the benefits the system will have in assisting Gardaí in Ballina with namely missing persons incidents, monitoring drug activity, identification of suspects and the ability to use footage as evidence in court. “The benefits to Gardaí are never ending,” said Sgt Gaynor. Currently 18 of the 22 cameras are up and running in the town with cameras located and entry and exit points of the town, on all major streets, along the Moy river, in a number of car parks and in two residential areas. Outgoing Ballina Superintendent Pat McHugh assured the meeting that as more resources become available, more cameras could be added to the system. Expressing her approval of the scheme, Councillor Mary Kelly said the system
‘exceeds what I expected’ and said she was ‘amazed at the quality of the cameras’. Cllr Barry McLoughlin praised fellow councillors, Cllr Johnny O’Malley and Mark Winters for ‘going beyond the call of duty’ for the CCTV scheme. Cllr Winters stated that the system would allow Gardaí to condense a month of investigations into two hours using the system, resulting in cases being brought before the courts quicker. “It’s a tool that will be used swiftly and the system has loads of room for expansion,” stated Cllr Winters. Town Manager Paul Benson concluded that although the project had gone on for many years, councillors aided in funding towards the €150,000 cost of the scheme. Mr Benson added that the maintenance of the scheme will cost €10,000 annually and would have to be found.

“Future We Need” group poses questions on Fracking
DEPUTY Joanna Tuffy last week answered some questions from the ‘Future We Need’ group on the issue of proposed Fracking in Counties Leitrim, Fermanagh, Donegal, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Limerick, Cork and Kerry. The Future We Need group are particularly alarmed about the issuing of a fracking exploration licence in Derrygonnelly, Enniskillen, close to the Irish border. The group asked Deputy Tuffy to enquire if crossborder agencies were involved in this important decision that has major implications for the Republic, and if the Irish Government raised any concerns. The Future We Need group also raised major issues about the proposed joint EPA/DCENR/NIEA Research Programme on Environmental Impacts of Fracking. The group believe the present Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Research Programme is flawed for several reasons. They have concerns over the programme’s narrow TOR ; the lack of a Health Impact Assessment in the terms; and the absence of assessment on further Issues, including impact on urban and rural life and the disposal of waste. The Future We Need group, which comprises Irish Religious congregations including the Sisters of Mercy and Presentation Sisters, raised their concerns with Deputy Tuffy about the exploration license and the EPA Research Programme, as many of their members live and work in these Counties and serious concerns have been raised in the local communities about the harmful effects Fracking could have on their areas and their lives. The group are also aware of the many problems that have arisen as a result of fracking in Canada and North America. Speaking after the meeting, Mary Purcell, Assistant Director at Mercy Global Action said the discussion was productive – “The issues that the Future We Need group have raised with Deputy Tuffy are extremely important, and we feel that they must be addressed by the EPA before any research can happen. Fracking will have an impact on the communities where it takes place, and we in the Future We Need group believe it is up to law-makers to ensure the best interests of the public are served with this report. We have every confidence that Deputy Tuffy will assist the Future We Need group to work with the Oireachtas committees that influence these decisions.”

Local designer’s “Love Letter to the west” wins critical acclaim at Bloom S
ligo woman Leonie Cornelius was the star of the show at this year’s Bloom Garden Festival in Phoenix Park, Dublin. Scooping a silver gilt medal for her lush interpretation of the beautiful north west of Ireland, Leonie was visited in her showgarden by several famous faces, such as President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who were full of praise for the young designer’s work. This year’s festival was blessed over the June bank holiday weekend with some of the finest weather we have seen so far this summer, lending an atmosphere of warmth and pleasure to events. Sunshine abounded as Leonie welcomed thousands of garden enthusiasts with her characteristic, beaming smile. “A Love Letter To The West” is Leonie’s homage to her homeplace; Doonloch, on the Sligo/Leitrim border, where she lives with her six year old son, Armando. She describes what she set out to achieve thus: “It’s based on the lush, opulent planting of the west in the summer... The planning process has been ongoing since the end of last year’s festival. It actually began as I
arrived home, and felt the familiar joy of seeing my garden in full bloom – I just thought “Ohhh, it’s so nice to be back in the North West of Ireland – and I realised I already had my theme for Bloom 2013!” Incredibly, this is only Leonie’s second outing at Bloom, after making her debut last year as winner of RTE television show, “Supergarden”. Winning the coveted ‘Best in Category’ prize and a gold medal in 2012 as a relative beginner in the world of showgardens, brought Leonie instantly into the spotlight as a rising star to be watched. She insists that she will definitely be back next year to the popular festival, which attracts in excess of 90,000 visitors each summer. “Bloom is a great place for designers to come together – to meet as a community and to help each other and inspire each other. Sometimes as a designer, you can find yourself quite isolated, and events like Bloom really remind you that we are all in it together at the end of the day. Bloom is such a great showcase of what we can really do – and it’s also a wonderful inspiration for all the visitors, as to what they
can do at home, with their own gardens.” Leonie’s love for the Sligo/Leitrim area, and her decision to theme her showgarden around the same, won her much needed funding from the Leitrim Development Company, who explain: “Leonie’s garden design for Bloom 2013 takes inspiration from Leitrim’s sloping meadows, as well as the county’s unique heritage and style. This is a unique way of promoting Leitrim’s beautiful landscape to a wider audience.” Leonie is effusive in her thanks to LDC, as well as her contractor Paul Taylor from Gorteen, her building team and suppliers, Horkans Garden Centre. “It’s so vital to have support in this kind of project. It quite simply could not have been done without the funding I received from Leitrim Development Company and the hard work of Paul and his amazing team.” Well, do it she did, showing off to perfection the wild, natural beauty and heritage of our part of the world – well done, Leonie, you’ve done the North West proud with your award-winning love letter.

All set for Drumshanbo Riverside Amenity project
T
he people of Drumshanbo have been waiting for it for years. Now, finally, after a long period of planning, the eyesore at the rear of the main car park in Drumshanbo is no more and work is now ready to start on the long-awaited Riverside Amenity project. The Pride in Drumshanbo Group (PID) and Drumshanbo Town Enhancements Ltd (DTEL), the company set up to manage the project, are delighted that the contracts have now been signed, the building has been removed, the site cleared, and now
signed off by our engineers allowing DTEL to move forward to the next phase of this unique project supported by Leitrim Development Co and Leitrim County Council. “We have already instructed our consulting engineers, CST Group, Sligo, to complete a full site survey which will allow our consulting engineers and landscape architects Murray & Associates, Dublin to understand the topography of the site in greater detail and map out the area based on the agreed design following a feasibility study report produced back in November
2011,” noted a Steve Stead, Chairperson of PID and DTEL. “The next step will be for our engineers to put together the necessary information for a Tendering process to appoint a suitable contractor to carry out the construction works for Phase 1.” Phase 1 of the project will include major landscaping and ground works including footpaths, retaining walls and fencing, staircases and ramps, pedestrian bridge, lighting, planting of trees, plants, flowers with a flat area space with seating. Once complete it will create a new and
different amenity in Drumshanbo, one that will enhance the quality of life for the community at large and improve the experience of visitors, tourists and festivalgoers. “It will be an accessible space, open to all and servicing a wide range of community groups and individual preferences, offering reflective and contemplative space, practical spaces and communal spaces for performances, markets or fairs will be encouraged as will wildlife, a place for exercise and for play and will allow people to enjoy the currently hidden millrace river whilst walking between the different areas of the town more safely, separated from traffic,” notes Mr Stead. “The journey hasn’t been easy, often very frustrating, due to one reason or another though the demolition of the major eyesore has given those involved great satisfaction in seeing it gone , this alone has made a huge difference, the fact that work will start soon to create The Riverside Amenity is very exciting knowing that our voluntary efforts will have a lasting impact on the town. “Although work has just began, if possible I’d like to thank those involved to date whom without their support wouldn’t be at the stage we are to, including PID & Association, DTEL Board Members, Joe Mooney Summer School Committee, Leitrim Development Company and Leitrim County Council.

Senator Henry highlights Sligo crèche concerns in Seanad
T
HE fall-out from the recent RTE Prime Time programme on activities in crèches around the country continues with Sligo's Senator Imelda Henry joining in a Seanad debate on the implications of exposing the failures of some crèches in providing adequate care for young
children. She told the Upper House that it was worrying that having visited a Sligo creche last year she was told las week that no parents had ever requested a HSE inspection report on the premises. Senator Henry (FG) said she was a parent who used creche facilities
in the past. “It is important that the staff employed in creches have the necessary qualifications to work in them, but, most important, parents have an obligation, when they hand over their children, to ask questions and know what is going on,’’ Ms Henry added. She recalled taking the Minister to a fantastic creche in Sligo last year, but she had been told that no parent had ever asked for an inspection report. She found that worrying. Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald had told the Seanad that the breach of childcare standards was the legacy of providing direct cash payments instead of investing in services “That is the reality of the legacy,’’ she added. “We need to discuss the implications of that and where we go from here.’’ According to the national press, Ms Fitzgerald said the legacy meant Ireland lagged behind many other developed countries when it came to the early-years sector and had much ground to make up. There was a need to improve quality standards and workforce
NEW HOUSE FOR SALE
capacity. She said that up to the last decade, Ireland’s preschool sector was almost non-existent and, during the late 1990s, Ireland still had one of the lowest female workforce participation rates in the developed world and one of the highest unemployment rates. The Celtic Tiger years saw a scramble to put services in place in response to demand, but a wholly inadequate approach to quality and sustainability. They saw what happened when there was a failure to invest in building an effective system and culture of quality-focused, childcentred service provision and when there was no investment in robust oversight and inspection. Terry Leyden (FF) said the Minister must feel somewhat embarrassed that she was relying on Prime Time to find out what was happening in creches. “If I was the Minister, I would be appalled by what was exposed and shocked that lack of action by the Department and the HSE and inspections allowed this to happen,’’ he added.

Knock Airport bracing itself for cessation of exchequer support
THE future of Knock Airport continues in focus and the Department of Transport is seeking tenders for consultancy advice ‘concerning options for the viability and growth of Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK)’, it has been confirmed. The successful tenderer will be required to develop scenarios to ensure a secure and viable
future for the facility into the future from a financial perspective. The appointed consultants are expected to examine alternatives for the airport, including a realignment of operations based on the cessation of exchequer support after 2014. They will be asked to outline if the proposed realignment will result in the reduction of services or passenger numbers at IWAK and the actions that need to be taken over the medium term to maintain the current level of service when government funding stops. The plans should identify realistic growth options, both aviation and aviation related, for IWAK. In addition, the consultants will be asked to provide a separate quotation for coordinating the work and reports from the IWAK study group into a coherent draft report format with conclusions and recommendations. In response to a parliamentary question by Deputy John O’Mahony, chairman of the airport
steering group, Minister Leo Varadkar outlined the level of funding and supports provided by his department in 2011, 2012 and to date in 2013 for the airport. He stated: “Under the regional airports programme, a sum of €431,907 in operational (Opex) subvention was provided in 2011 and €589,644 in 2012. Applications from regional airports for Opex funding for 2013 will be invited later this year. Funding for capital works at IWAK under the Capex grant scheme amounted to €233,282 in 2011 and €699,007 in 2012. “Capex funding of €2,039,927, including an additional €650,000 announced earlier this month, has been approved for drawdown at Knock in 2013, while a further €1,710,993 has been approved for drawdown by the airport in 2014.” In addition, Tourism Ireland is investing in cooperative marketing campaigns to drive inbound tourism on IWAK routes, he said.

St. Angela’s College, Sligo – offering more than you might think…
A
s a College of National University of Ireland, Galway - all programmes at St. Angela’s College are accredited under NUI standards offering the only university-level degree in the region. Programmes are focused to meet the needs of the sector and with that in mind; the Departments of Education, Home Economics and Nursing, Health Sciences and Disability Studies develop programmes which are unique to the North West. ‘St Angela’s College student enrolment now stands at over 1200 students,’ explains Dr Taheny, President of the College. ‘This unprecedented growth over the last decade places the College in an excellent position to continue to offer high-quality universitylevel programmes with modern campus facilities, small classes and a strong community spirit.’ St. Angela’s College has recently introduced two new Undergraduate programmes to its list of CAO programmes on offer. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Business Management is a four year degree
which is designed to provide this growing industry with multi-skilled graduates. ‘The course is so diverse, there are a wide variety of job opportunities which can be pursued’ explains Emma Douglas, 2nd year student. The Bachelor of Arts (Health and Disability Studies) is designed to explore the concepts and principles of health and disability in the 21st century. This three year degree gives students a solid understanding of the issues that people face in relation to health, wellness and disability. BA student Patricia Coleman, describes her College experience; ‘the campus environment has a welcoming atmosphere about it. Class sizes are small which means it’s easier to make new friends and lecturers get to know every student and their abilities’. The College introduces two new programmes for September 2013: The Bachelor of Arts in Textiles, Fashion and Design with Business Management is an exciting new initiative which will enable students to become competent in developing garment and textile craft designs. A portfolio is required for entry purposes and applications for 2013 are now closed. Applicants are encouraged to view the Portfolio Guidelines available on the College website. Also new for 2013 is the Diploma of Applied Science in Food and Business Management. This two year Diploma will enable students to develop a sound understanding of the food production and food consumption process. Students of this Diploma may progress into year three of the B.Appl.Sc. (see above), subject to conditions. For details on these or any of the programmes on offer at St. Angela’s College, call Seán Kelly on 071-9135658, email schoolsinfo@stangelas.nuigalway.ie or visit www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie

Mulherin says NRA is wasting money replacing road signs
M
ayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has criticised the NRA's national policy of replacing road signs on national roads including in County Mayo at a time when there isn't
enough money to fill potholes is a waste of money and overkill. Deputy Mulherin is now calling for the signage funding to be made available to Mayo County Council to repair non-national roads. The cost of the re-signing of the N26 is 171,710 plus VAT, under a fixed price lump sum contract, which also includes the cost of the re-signage of the N66 (Gort to Loughrea), Deputy Mulherin has been informed by the NRA. The NRA disclosed the cost of the resignage work after Deputy Mulherin questioned the Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, in the Dail on the need for, and cost of, replacement signage on the N26. Deputy Mulherin said: "It is unbelievable that this is a priority for funding by the NRA while there isn't enough money to fill potholes and repair and maintain non-national roads throughout our County leaving the County Council under severe pressure to attend to these roads without sufficient resources available to them. "While good signage is important for business and tourism it should be pointed out that there is already directional signage on the N26 and in fact this Carrentrila by-pass is only open a few years so its signage is relatively new. The signage on the N59 has only recently been replaced at a further
cost. "I believe that this policy of replacing signs at this point in time is a waste of money and overkill looking at the actual size of replacement signs and the NRA should instead be making that funding available to Local Authorities to address the terrible condition of some nonnational roads which are also the responsibility of the NRA. "I am taking the matter up with the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar at the earliest opportunity and will ask for some common sense to prevail so that we get proper value for money. Further the consultation with local authorities being undertaken by the NRA in relation to the placement of signs and the impact on visual amenity is very questionable. "The County Council and the Town Councils spend a lot of money clearing signage and trying to tidy up and improve our towns including bye-laws to control the use of signage by local business and then the NRA comes along and erects signs in all sorts of locations. "For example the Council has just spent €65,000 improving the Carrentrila junction and the NRA comes in without due regard for the amenity of the area and erects new signs. The same applies to the roundabout at Gurteens on the Crossmolina Road."

Sligo Animal Rescue
Sligo Animal Rescue has a powerful online presence. Recognised as one of the most successful and well run resources of its kind in the region, SAR is where people turn if they come across an animal in need.
W
hat is less well-known is the fact that Sligo Animal Rescue is run solely on donations and fundraising, with no premises to call their own, and an overwhelming dependency on goodwill and assistance from vets, foster carers, volunteers and members of the public. The women at the helm of this completely voluntary service are Dorothy Kilgallon, who started SAR in 2009 when the Sligo SPCA shut down, and her right and left hands Tania Carron and Siobhan Watters, who runs the vitally important Facebook page that is the public face of the service. Quite aside from the work they put into SAR, all the women in question have full time jobs and families. When I ask how they find the time, Dorothy explains; “Early mornings and late nights! I myself would have always dipped in and out of rescue centres wherever I lived, it’s just something I’ve always done. I suppose it’s something that even if I tried to get out of it, I wouldn’t last. I would always be worrying about these animals – if we aren’t there to help them, who is? Perhaps life would be easier without trying to do all this, but I wouldn’t be able to sleep easy at night if I
wasn’t doing what I’m doing. There are high points and happy points, but there are sides to it which are almost soul-destroying too. It’s a balancing act.” Scroll through the heartwarming pictures and stories that can be found on their Facebook page and you will soon find yourself falling in love with almost all the animals in SAR’s care to date. While endeavouring to offer care and treatment to any and all animals in need, and having seen such diverse creatures as pygmy hedgehogs, horses,
goats and terrapins pass through their hands, it tends to be overwhelmingly dogs that SAR find in need of their help. Each animal rescued by the service is placed in a foster home temporarily, where they receive food, shelter and love as they wait to find a new “forever home” as Dorothy calls permanent adoptive homes that take on rescue animals. Unfortunately, foster homes are in short supply and Dorothy finds that demand more often than not is far too high, when it comes to people looking to give up their dog or cat. In most cases, especially with dogs, this situation arises through no fault of the animal in question. “Sometimes if we aren’t in a position to help immediately, we can come across some bad will. If we don’t act instantly, a lot of the time people just can’t understand that. They can’t see that we don’t have a premises, that we literally have nowhere to put this dog or cat they want rid of at a moment’s notice – we have to wait for a foster home. I think the perception sometimes is that we are just sitting in an office somewhere waiting for the phone to ring, which we’re certainly not! It’s very frustrating sometimes.” There is plenty of information out there about the benefits of rescue dogs – generally, they have better temperament, health, character and life span, as well as costing less than full bred dogs and being ultimately more rewarding. However, people still continue to pay outlandish sums of money for ‘designer dogs’ – a particular breed they think suits their image, or whose coat doesn’t shed, or which looks a certain way. This, despite the fact that a frightening percentage of full bred puppies on the market (even from pet stores in some cases) come from the shockingly squalid backgrounds of puppy farming and black market breeding. “I think there’s a perception out there that if you pay money for a dog, what you’re going to get is a perfect dog. And that with rescue dogs, there’s something ‘wrong’ with them. In ninety nine percent of cases, this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s often the puppies that are bought because they’re fluffy, cute little things that are going to be a problem once they are grown up. People don’t know anything about the breeds they are buying,
how much work goes into training them and keeping them stimulated, or what health issues they might have. They literally just like the look of them.” The darker side of the job undertaken by SAR is animal cruelty. Dorothy is passionate about helping these creatures, who suffer desperately at the hands of abusive owners, be rescued and re-homed with families who will give them the love and care they deserve. Several of the stories she related to me almost brought me to tears. The absolutely shocking levels of neglect and outright abuse that innocent animals go through, and the many, many happy endings that SAR have been a part of creating, would touch the hardest heart. Despite having to work incredibly hard just to keep SAR open, despite the sometimes thankless nature of this work, these happy endings are what make this job so rewarding for Dorothy. In her own words; “It’s just so nice to see these animals go to a good home – to see the joy the people who take them in get from them, as well as to see them safe and sound and happy out. Seeing the good in people too, seeing what the public are willing and able to do for us, that’s another real plus of the job.” To help Sligo Animal Rescue, you don’t need to take on a pet you are not ready or willing for. There are many, many ways to help this worthwhile cause to continue and flourish. Dorothy is always looking for new foster homes – a place for the animal or animals in question to find shelter and a little comfort while they wait to be adopted. Emergency foster is another area of assistance – even just taking in an animal in need over night, or transporting it to the vet can mean the difference between life and death. Donations of money, food, bedding and toys are always very appreciated, as would be any form of fundraising. On a very basic level, awareness is key, so if you can, take a moment to like and share the Sligo Animal Rescue facebook page. You might not be able or ready to adopt one of the many fantastic characters on display there – but someone you know could find a perfect companion. As the owner of two rescue animals myself, I can tell you there is very little more rewarding than rescuing a pet and seeing them flourish with your love and attention.

Man no longer thinks he is a zombie after help from top university S ome of us have woken up feeling like death before but for one man the sensation went further and he actually thought he had passed away. ‘Graham’ suffered from a severe mental condition known as Cotard’s Syndrome, which made him believe he was no longer with us. He had woken up with the disease, also known as Walking Corpse Syndrome, nine years ago after trying to commit suicide. Despite the doctors and everyone else around him insisting he was still breathing, the man was adamant he had moved on. Before he recovered, he would spend his days wondering around graveyards like a zombie because he wanted to be close to death. ‘Graham’ also decided to give up smoking and stopped eating and speaking during his delusion. But now the man, who is thought to be British, is better after receiving treatment from experts at the University of Exeter. ‘I don’t feel brain dead anymore,’ he said.
Burger King thieves have getaway car stolen by employee who hides it during robbery A pair of criminals were left without a getaway car after it was stolen by an employee of the fast food restaurant they were attempting to rob. The armed men had just raided a branch of Burger King in Stockton, California, when they found themselves in a bit of a pickle. They had fled the restaurant and were ready to make their getaway but couldn’t locate their vehicle. It turned out it had been taken by a quick-thinking employee who saw it unattended and decided to drive it away. The worker had initially gone out back to alert authorities to the robbery and was shocked to find the criminals had been stupid enough to leave their car running. He then proceeded to drive the vehicle around the corner, which obviously caused considerable confusion for the thieves once they had stepped out. Jeremy Lovitt, 23, and Gabriel Gonzalez, 19 were arrested by police at the scene.

Secret knitters strike again with creations that have won renown for seaside town
THEY are secretive street artists who go on the prowl at night, depositing works that have earned global acclaim. But unlike urban graffiti guerrillas such as Banksy, this lot are more knitty than gritty. The elusive Yarnbombers struck again over the bank holiday weekend, leaving behind woollen versions of seaside sights such as ice creams, sunbathers and fish and chips. Such colourful scenes –including donkeys, mermaids and a daring RNLI rescue – have become a summer tradition on the front in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Teesside. The secrecy surrounding the knitters has played a big part in getting them into the headlines – and that’s probably all part of the plan hatched by residents of the east coast town. So while most locals are thought to know who is involved, the information is shared on a strictly ‘needles to know’ basis by members of the close-knit community. Do I knit? Yes I do,’ said Edna Vernon, who runs a café in Saltburn. But asked whether she knew who the mystery knitters were, the answer was a firm no. ‘That’s part of the thing, isn’t it, that no one knows who it is,’ the 78-year-old explained.

Vintage 1976 Apple computer sold One of Apple's first computers, a functioning 1976 model, has been sold for a record 516,000 euros (£441,000). German auction house Breker said an Asian client, who asked not to be named, bought the so-called Apple 1, which the tech company's founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak built in a family garage. Breker said it was one of only six known remaining functioning models in the world. Breker sold one last year for 492,000 euros (£421,000). It said the computer bears Wozniak's signature. An old business transaction letter from the late Steve Jobs was also included. The Apple 1, which was sold for 666 US dollars (about £440) in 1976, consisted of only the circuit board. A case, a keyboard and a screen had to be bought separately.
Microsoft reveals Xbox One console
Google goes to Galapagos Islands
M
icrosoft has unveiled its next generation video games console, Xbox One. At an event at its US headquarters in Redmond, Washington, which was streamed around the world, the electronics giant said the new voice and motion-controlled device was an "all-in-one system" for games, live
television, films and music. Don Mattrick, president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft, told the audience and millions of people on the internet: "Today we put you at the centre of a new generation in the living room - where your games look and feel like nothing else, where your TV becomes more intelligent, where all of your entertainment comes alive in one place. Team Xbox is on a new mission - design and build an all-in-one system to light up a new generation of games, TV and entertainment." The sleek black console, with a new Kinect camera sensor and game pad, is the successor to the hugely successful Xbox 360 which sold a reported 77 million consoles around the world. The new machine, which will be released later this year, sees Microsoft add a blu-ray drive to its console and the use of video calling service Skype. An upgraded Kinect camera allows the device to better analyse body movements and can even read a user's heartbeat when exercising, Microsoft said. Fifteen exclusive games, including eight new franchises, will be available on Xbox One within the first year of its release, the company added. Hollywood director Steven Spielberg appeared on video during the event to an-
nounce a live-action television series of the video game franchise Halo. A first look of the latest instalment in the Call of Duty series - Call of Duty: Ghosts - was also shown and will launch first on Xbox One. Microsoft's high-profile preview of the console follows the announcement of rival products from Sony and Nintendo. Sony held a press conference in February when it revealed details about its upcoming PlayStation 4, while Nintendo launched its next-generation console, the Wii U, last year. Both Microsoft and Sony plan followup "keynote" announcements at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles on June 10. Among the new features on Xbox One are "snap mode" which allows users to run two programmes at once, while "trending" allows users to see which games and television shows are popular with friends. The console has eight gigabytes of memory and a 1080p camera for HD Skype calls is built into the new Kinect sensor, Microsoft said. However the price of the new machine was not announced during the launch event. Fifa 14, Madden 25, NBA Live 14 and the fighting game UFC would all launch on Xbox One using a new games engine called Ignite which will "blur the line between real and virtual", EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson told the audience.

Communications minister Ed Vaizey said: "Government realises that the world has moved on since these exemptions were written into the Video Recordings Act some 30 years ago. The changes we've announced today will help ensure children are better protected, and that parents are provided with the information necessary for them to make informed choices about what their children view." It comes as the Government announced it was pushing for other measures to protect children from unsuitable images on the internet. Work is under way with wireless internet providers to introduce blocks on some content, such as pornography websites, in family friendly places such as cafes and restaurants. Edward Timpson, children and families minister, said: "Parents need to be confident that their children are not exposed to adult content when out and about in public places. This progress is encouraging. "Through the UK Council for Child Internet
Safety we will push for a firmer commitment from WiFi providers, retailers, shops and cafes so parents are reassured their children will not be able to access pornography when they are away from home."

house and
home guide to renovation
part 1
F
orewarned is forearmed, especially when it comes to renovating.
Prepare yourself with lessons learned, expert advice and our best money-saving tips - before you pick up the sledgehammer! 1. Getting started Avoid: Starting the renovation before getting a feel for the house Solutions: Live in a house through as many seasons as possible before you start any major changes - unless the building is about to collapse! Rather than attempting to design your own blueprint, the priorities in the early stages should be a schedule of your needs and wishes, a master plan of how to achieve them and a budget,.A big-picture vision can prevent extra costs on electrical and structural work. Design and decorative elements are equally important. Slowly gather inspiration for your mood board - a batch of pages from magazines, fabric swatches, design postcards and furniture brochures
- to convey your visual passions. 2. Assembling a team Avoid: Hiring a team without comparing prices and personalities Solutions: Cheapest isn't always best when putting together the team - a person's workmanship, commitment, management experience, communication skills and availability should be the major priorities. You'll save in the long-term with someone who can take educated shortcuts, work faster and who will make less errors. A building designer or draftsperson can keep costs down for a simple house extension, but for a new build or an extensive reno, an architect is the ticket. They can advise you on everything from design, planning and managing the budget to designing the interior, landscaping and even checking the builder's invoices. An architect's fees are around 10-15 per cent of the project value. To find a local architect, visit the Institute of Architects' website at www.architec-
ture.ie. They're also experienced in dealing with local councils. Many architects will recommend their regular builders; talk to at least three to compare packages and check references. Rather than just relying on the builder's references, talk to the owners themselves. Prospective trades people need to show home warranty insurance and public liability insurance. Be sure that your trades people are covered for workers' compensation by their employer. 3. Controlling the budget Avoid: Being unprepared for an unexpected budget blow-out Solutions:While an architect can estimate upcoming costs, a quantity surveyor will supply a more detailed price expectation. The break down the building into elements, such as floors and walls, and amend the cost depending on the materials. Keep a log of all products and materials used and changes made - each decision to upgrade adds up and could blow your budget. To help minimise risks, a contingency plan of 10-15 per cent extra budget is imperative. All sorts of things can go wrong - latent conditions get discovered and they usually cost money.. During a major renovation, be prepared for a raft of specialists battering on your front door. These include engineers and building surveyors, and the ever-increasing list of consultants required by local councils, such as sustainability experts. Visit your local council for a full list. Consider the cost of rental fees if you move out during the renovation. Moving out could save you money - and sanity. When the owners move out, the house can be fully gutted and will run on minimal electricity and no hot water. Renting also saves time and money because tradesmen don't have to pack up each day.

4. Getting the timing right Avoid: Thinking that the renovation will run on time and to schedule Solutions: Timing is crucial. "If you haven't ordered a kitchen before November, it probably won't be installed until February. You can be guaranteed that the factory will shut down over Christmas, making the kitchen at least a month late. Builders and architects take time off for holidays throughout the year.Ask them to confirm their vacation plans early on.Another slow down can be the winter season. Builders are entitled to extensions for winter weather during the early stages of the construction. Aim to complete construction before January:The team can keep working on the interiors throughout the bad weather 5. Starting the demolition Avoid: Failing to show the construction plans to your neighbours before lodging the development application Solutions: Consider showing site plans, elevations and shadow diagrams to directly affected neighbours before applying to the council. Loss of privacy and overshadowing are common complaints, so consider the impact your design may have early to speed up the planning approval process. After this hurdle, you, your architect or building designer can lodge the development application with the council before building commences. Patience is a virtue, since councils are notoriously slow, and if complaints are lodged, you may have to attend council meetings. Most councils require a construction certificate for building work to start. Once done, the blissful sounds of jackhammers can begin.
In the bathroom, save money by sourcing taps, the sink & the bath yourself.
6. Keeping costs down Avoid: Project managing a full renovation yourself - it can cost more Solutions: An architect can be commis-
sioned for different stages, starting with the plans (preliminary sketches, briefing a structural engineer and a quantity surveyor), the design development stage (preparation of the final design and documentation required for council submissions) and contract administration (tendering, signing of building contracts, site inspections and monitoring the builder's progress). For a reasonably simple renovation, it may be possible to project manage the final stage yourself. As a back-up, hire an architect on an hourly rate; they understand the specifications, can solve difficult issues with the builder and spot flaws a layperson would never notice. Source fittings, lighting and decorative elements yourself.Time and research is key to achieving a high-end look for a fraction of the cost. You can often save money by negotiating all the furniture from one place, or offering to pay cash in exchange for a discount.
7. Adopting an eco attitude Avoid: Assuming eco-sensitive options are more expensive Solutions: Incorporating green solutions into a design in the early stages may have an initial added cost, but they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. By installing solar panels, you can generate your own electricity, saving money in the long term as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Design your renovation to work with the seasons to regulate temperature, humidity and air flow. Site orientation is critical to take advantage of solar power and cross-ventilation. Insulate and use materials with good thermal mass (those which absorb and release heat slowly, cutting down the need for heating and airconditioning). Work with non-toxic products and avoid over-consumption. Use renewable resources where possible for energy, along with energy-efficient appliances. Collect and store rain water for daily use.

f the dining room furniture is the most often used furniture in the house, then the living room is often the room where the family spends most of it's time. It is a multi functional room as it is for relaxing and also less formal entertaining. Living room furniture needs to be hard wearing since it gets such use, yet this should not be allowed to stop the room from being stylishly decorated. What is considered living room furniture?
Living room furniture is made up of a wide variety of different pieces of furniture including the following: • Settee and foot stool sets, Coffee tables, Book cases, Mirrors, Occasional tables, Sideboards, Display units, Lamps and other ornaments, TV stands and cabinets, Fireplaces, Statues and hearth decorations, Rugs and floor adornments. There are as many combinations of furniture as there are people. With the variety of furniture available, combined with the room size and shape, it is possible to create a truly original living space.
How to furnish your living room Furnishing a living room can be a tricky exercise, and is one that requires quite a deal of thought and planning. For many homes the living room is the showcase. The first consideration is the size and shape of the room and included in this consideration is also location of door(s), window(s), radiators and fireplace. When these have been taken into account you will have a good idea of what configuration of furniture will best fit into and complement your living room. You should also set a budget guideline at an early stage to help narrow down the possibilities a little. Stick to a style. With your basic living room furniture it is best to use a common theme throughout. You can introduce different ideas through the accessories you choose to go with the basic furniture.

bed when you feel sleepy again. Choosing the right base: It's surprising how much difference a base makes. And we’re not just talking about how they look or how much storage they have. Matching the right mattress with the right base is the key to perfect comfort. So here's some handy bed advice.
lems and go to bed and get up at roughly the same time every day.
Firm support base bed advice: Solid or platform top divans, have a rigid, non spring top panel, often used with orthopaedic mattresses, these bases will typically give the whole bed a firmer feel.
Good housekeeping: Unwelcome bedroom guests like dust mites cause allergens that can affect your breathing and are a common cause of sleep problems. Simple things like using a mattress protector and keeping your room well ventilated will make a big difference.
Sprung slatted base bed advice: The sprung slatted base is the most common way to support the mattress on many of today’s bedsteads. Two rows of curved wooden slats, usually beech, run across the width of the bed and their bowed shape provides a mattress with extra spring support.
Take more exercise: 20 to 30 minutes exercise a day goes a long way to reduce common sleep problems. So go for a walk, bike ride or swim, it helps relieve the stresses and strains of the day and is one of the best ways to make sure you get a refreshing night's sleep.
Drawer base bed advice: The base of your bed can do so much more that provide a little extra support. Thanks to the number of options now available with one, two, three or four handy drawers to full size ottomans, it can help you de-clutter your room too.
De-stress before bed: Everyone needs time to wind down before bed, so make time for it. Take a bath, listen to soothing music or try a bit of yoga. We all have our own way of relaxing, so find yours.
Don't over indulge: Tea and coffee may be great in the morning to get you going, but the last thing you need when you want to go to sleep. So avoid sleep problems, cut out the stimulants and go for relaxing hot milky drinks or herbal teas instead.
Train your body clock: When your body knows when it's time to sleep, good quality sleep will come much more naturally. So avoid sleep prob-
Can't sleep – don't count sheep, get up: Don't lie there thinking about why you can't get to sleep. Get up, do something relaxing and go back to
Buying a mattress: Mattresses may look pretty much the same from the outside, but underneath there are huge differences. To help you buy a mattress that's right for you, here's the insiders guide to the ins and outs of our mattresses. When you buy a mattress the cover is the first thing you'll see. And whilst attractive designs are a plus, remember it will spend all of its life covered up. When you buy a mattress go for the best quality cov-

here's no secret to a great night’s sleep. Just follow these simple steps and say goodbye to sleep problems. Is your bed up to the job? Even the best bed in the world won’t last forever. Chances are if it's ten years old, or less if it's a cheap bed, it's probably past its best and isn't giving you the support you need. Old mattresses are often the biggest cause of sleep problems. Get your room right: Make your room your sleep sanctuary and not a storeroom or home office. A room dedicated to sleep will help to eliminate sleep problems. It's that simple. So create a calming, restful space and de-clutter your bedroom.

ering you can. Woven or knitted high quality viscose or cotton yarns will be comfortable, tough and tear resistant. Many mattresses at Sleepmasters have anti allergy and anti bacterial properties. Some of our mattresses including our Sensaform beds feature a very special covering that helps regulate your body temperature while you sleep. Quilting or tufting: Most mattresses are finished by either quilting or tufting. Quilting is where the outer fabric is stitched to the surface fillings to create a comfortable sleeping surface surface. Tufting is where tapes are passed through the mattress at regular intervals and secured at each side by tags or washers, to prevent movement of the upholstery within the mattress. Open coil: Probably the most common type of mattress, springs are arranged in rows and connected to one another, top and bottom, by a spiral helical wire. The thickness, or gauge, of the steel will determine how hard or soft
the mattress feels. Pocket spring: Individual springs are contained within their own cloth pocket and positioned in rows. This design allows each spring to work independently, supporting the body exactly where it needs it and prevents the age old problem of roll-together. Spring counts vary from 600 to up to 3 or even 4,000, and like other types of mattresses are made in a range of tensions. Higher quality mattresses are often hand side stitched to increase their life expectancy. Pocket sprung mattresses are generally more expensive, and are used mainly in higher quality products. Memory foam: If you're looking to buy a mattress, go for the ultimate in sleep comfort. Our exclusive NASA developed Sensaform memory foam uses your body heat and weight to mould itself to your exact shape. This allover, perfectly balanced support reduces stress on pressure points, improves circulation and can even help alleviate back pain.

choosing the right
flooring for your home
Carpet Carpets were probably first made by nomadic peoples to cover the earthen floor in their tents. It is not certain however, if the Egyptians, the Chinese, or even the Mayas first invented carpet making. It is quite possible that many peoples, none of whom were in contact with each other, began to make carpets at about the same time. We can be certain however, that by
the fifth century BC carpet making had reached a high artistic level. This was proven by the Russian archaeologists Rudenko and Griaznov, who in 1949 discovered the oldest known “knotted” carpet in the Pazyryk valley, about 5000 feet up on the Altai Mountains in Siberia. Today, Carpet weaving is by far the most widespread handicraft in Iran; it is also the best-known one abroad. Persian carpets are renowned for
their richness of colour, variety of patterns and quality of design. Wooden Flooring Wooden flooring made its appearance in the Middle Ages, with some of those 800-year old floors still in use today. The upper levels were the most common placement, with the most expensive wooden floors being stained colors, laid in patterns, parquets and even marquetry. Less costly floors were decorated with painted patterns and designs starting in the early 1600’s, with the genesis probably being painted oilcloths which are still popular today. Colonial times brought smooth pine wooden flooring boards, and the 18th century saw painting to simulate stone and simple checked patterns combined with floor cloths in elaborate wood floor designs and marbelized diamond patterns being very common. These were used primarily in hallways, dining rooms and parlors. Finer cuts of wood flooring and inlayed designs were limited to the formal and nicer rooms. The 19th century was characterized by unfinished pine wooden flooring that evolved to being stained and finished by mid-century. Pine soon became subflooring as parquet got popular, with prefabricated parquet patterns being sold to install on cloth yielding “wood carpet.” Herringbone oak parquet patterns abounded with the emergence of custom borders featured in dining rooms, libraries, and drawing rooms. The 20th century visited lighter wooden flooring in the 20’s and 30’s, with strip oak the standard in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Peaking in 1956, wood flooring was overwhelmed by carpet following the FHA’s accept-
ance for new home construction. Throughout the 60’s and 70’s hardwood flooring was a specialty surface utilized very selectively until the appearance, durability, health and maintenance benefits returned it to favor again in the 80’s and 90’s. Vinyl Flooring Vinyl Flooring first came into being as a light-weight and durable building material during World War II. As more and more use of this product began being discovered, vinyl entered into the commercial market with a vengeance. Today, one very important usage of this chemical is in the flooring industry in the form of vinyl floor tiles. Depending on the composition of the material, vinyl tiles tend to have variance in characteristics, leading to choices in terms of whether a given tile is more or less suitable to be installed in a bathroom, doorway, or basement. In the VCT, for example, manufacturers add a printed design layer created through a rotogravure printing process. This design layer is
what gives the vinyl floor tiles those beautiful designs and colors and sparkle, making them attractive. It is in VCT again that manufacturers sheath a high-performance “wear” layer on top, in order to withstand heavy duty traffic. It is not for nothing that these tiles are called “Resilience tiles”. They tend to bounce back from whatever impact and pressure they are subjected to, whether through footfalls or static load. A few other notable characteristics of this product are as follows: Diversity of designs Thanks to technology, vinyl flooring tiles can imitate the look and feel of wood or ceramic floors, but at considerably less cost than these more expensive counterparts. It is very easy to cut the tiles and give them any shape; so the floor can be turned into a mosaic of designs and art. Company logos can be planted on the floor through vinyl floor tiles. Direction signs can be impregnated on the floor using this product… the list is as endless as your imagination.

Protect yourself from the Sun W
E are now well into the summer season and it is high time we started thinking about sunscreen. Ireland may not be blessed with a tropical climate, but that does not mean that the sun cannot do damage to our skin. More often then not, the only time Irish people buy sun lotion is when they are going
abroad. What people do not realise, is that even in Ireland, the sun can do damage to the skin, causing all signs of premature aging such as; wrinkles, pigment spots and sagging skin. Deeper in the skin, it can cause changes that increase the risk of skin cancers. This damage can be permanent and irreversible. The answer however is not simply to become a hermit for the summer. After all, sunshine is needed to stimulate the formation of D-vitamin, strengthen our bones and other structural tissues in our bodies including skin. Dermatologists recommend that you protect yourself from exaggerated sun exposure by wearing sunglasses, hats and using sun cream. A sun protector factor (SPF) of at least 15 is needed to give you the protection needed from the Irish sun. You should apply 20 minutes before going outside, we often fail to remember this and as a result only apply when we have already basked in the sun. Not all SPF's are suitable for your skin, so be diligent when purchasing sun lotion. If your skin tends to be on the sensitive side opt for a natural chemical-free sunscreen. Ask in your local pharmacy for the most suitable product for your skin. You should apply a lotion with a SPF of 30 or higher if you are getting above-average daily sun exposure on the face and body. By using higher-rated products, sunbathers and outdoor enthusiasts can safely remain longer in the sun. Make sure that you give protection to the parts of your body that get the most exposure (Nose, ears, neck, shoulders, face, hands, forearms and top of head). Pay particular attention to skin near the edges of clothing such as straps and necklines, which are easily missed. If you are outdoors for long periods, do not forget to reapply. Try to avoid exposure around midday. A general rule of thumb is if your shadow is shorter than you are, you’re more likely to
sunburn. After sun exposure, you should always moisturize your skin. Look for sun products that contain moisturizers, such as vitamin E and aloe to replenish the lost moisture after sun exposure. Dermatologists maintain that Irish people should be wearing a form of sunscreen all year round. They recommend that even on a cloudy or overcast days you should have a form of sunscreen on since 80 percent of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist and fog. Also, incidental exposure, the kind received unintentionally such as while gardening or walking the dog, accounts for 80 percent of lifetime exposure. Everyone loves a hot summer, but it is important to remember that babies and young children are at risk of becoming ill during very hot weather. Dehydration, heatstroke, and sunburn can all have serious effects on your health.
