"Carols by Candlelight" - Special guests at the Moy Singers "Carols by Candlelight" Christmas Concert in Belleek Castle Hotel on Sunday 9th/Mon 10th December are members of the Lawlor School of Song. A MAJOR row which may yet impact on Enda Kenny has developed over the Government’s decision to significantly subsidise Shannon Airport in a manner which may have a negative impact on the future of Ireland West Airport, Knock. The announcement of a major financial package for Shannon, which includes a €100m debt write-down and the creation of up to 850 jobs, has also give rise to anti-competitive claims and IWAK management said they may have “no choice but to challenge the Government’s inequitable behaviour towards the airport in the courts”. This is particularly due to the separation of Shannon from the DAA. Chairman Liam Scollan explained, “The decision to intervene so generously in one airport [Shannon] while ignoring other airports amounted to an unfair, wasteful and possible illegal use of scarce resources, which would not serve the interests of national aviation.” There are hopes among the coalition that the separation from DAA will lead to increased traffic, greater passenger numbers and more jobs at Shannon. A proposed new international centre for aviation services was also announced by Ministers Richard Bruton and Leo Varadkar at a midday press briefing on Tuesday. However, Scollan believes the measures could “trigger the terminal decline of an efficient, growing airport like Knock, which has begun to compete successfully with the State-owned Shannon at a fraction of the cost. It was also a financially disastrous policy for hard-pressed taxpayers.” Continued on Page 2

Knock Airport Row Could Rock Fine Gael

Continued from Front Page The political fall-out is already taking hold with Fianna Fail’s Dara Calleary accusing Fine Gael and Labour of “selling out” on Knock Airport again. Also, Ballina-based Fine Gael TD., Michelle Mulherin said she felt that given we now have a Taoiseach and Minister of State in Mayo people will be deeply disappointed that the needs of local communities, and the North West as a whole are not being met.

Freelance Journalist No need for soup kitchen, says Roscommon councillor DESPITE the apparent “good” news in our last issue concerning the opening of a soup kitchen in Roscommon town a Roscommon Councillor has commented that the people who are in severe financial difficulty will not benefit from a soup kitchen in Roscommon. Independent Councillor Paula McNamara has again hit out at the opening of a soup kitchen in the County Town.

Ice rink in Carrick for Christmas Carrick-on-Shannon will play host to an ice rink this Christmas, as part of a raft of initiatives being put in place to entice shoppers into the Leitrim County town. The rink will be open in the Town Park in the Town Centre on December 15th and 16th. Over the weeks before the holidays there'll be a number of events including a Christmas themed road race; a visit from Santa; street entertainment; and story-telling for children among others. And as well as free parking being implemented for shoppers, local taxi drivers are running a free Saturday transfer service from the surrounding train stations to help bring shoppers into the town. Margaret Doherty of the Christmas in Carrick Committee says there's been a great rally within the community to help boost footfall for traders this year.

The manager has confirmed that the facility will open on Castle Street on Monday. That's despite widespread concerns in the town that it's not needed and is giving out a wrong message making the people of the town appear as poor. Councillor McNamara says there are a number of facilities already in place and there's no need for this soup kitchen.

SLIGO and North West “Dragon’s Den” enthusiasts will be looking forward to the participation of Sligo pharmacist and owner of Cara Pharmacies at Quayside SC and Wine Street, Ramona Nicholas, as one of the new “Dragons” following the earlier decision of Bobby Kerr and Niall O’Farrell to step down from the popular RTE television series. Ramona, the 35-year-old mother of one, lives in /Bundoran with her husband of seven years, Canice, and owns the Cara chain of pharmacies. She recently featured on an episode of The Secret Millionnaire where she helped people with alcohol and drug addiction problems in Galway. Both former Dragon ladies also have

Sligo connections. Sarah Newman assisted in an advisory capacity during the set up of entrepreneurial companies run by students at IT Sligo while Norah Casey was the principal judge at the Sligo Races Ladies Day hosted by The Clarion Hotel Sligo and is a frequent visitor to the county. It is expected a fourth Dragon will be announced in the coming weeks as businessman and media guru now remains the last one standing from the original line-up. The final member is expected to be a wealthy businessman from the Irish “diasporo”. Gavin Duffy commented recently that it was more difficult for ideas and ambitions to foster in such a recessionary environment. It is only when the cameras stop rolling that the real work starts for the dragons. Helping start-ups to flourish in this environment is not easy. Ramona qualified in Pharmacy from Queens University, Belfast, in 1999, and spent a three years in Dublin before the Cara company was formed in 2002. Ramona is originally from Ardboe, Co Tyrone and moved to Donegal in 2001.

New educational option for beauty industry in Mayo

Sinead Scahill (Founder, Skin Deep Institute) with Aoife Jennings (Steiner Leisure Cruises) who offically opened Skin Deep Institute Beauty College in Claremorris.

Claremorris now boasts a top quality beauty training college, Skin Deep Institute, offering courses for both beauty professionals and students entering the industry. Skin Deep Institute was officially opened by Aoife Jennings, Recruitment Manager of Steiner Leisure Cruises, on Monday 26 November 2012. Speaking at the launch, Aoife Jennings, who is originally from Westport, emphasised the opportunities within the beauty industry and the value

of quality training. “Our recruitment team travel the world looking for staff, but we only want exceptional graduates”, she said, “In this industry you have to lay your foundation well. We need people like Sinead Scahill to provide training at the highest level”. Steiner Leisure operates in spas onboard 157 ships worldwide. “Success in the beauty training business is always down to the person in charge”, Aoife Jennings con-

tinued, “Sinead Scahill has everything needed to make an emphatic success of Skin Deep Institute, and I wish her well in her new venture”. Skin Deep Institute has been set up by Sinead Scahill who has many years industry experience behind her. Sinead spotted a gap in the beauty training sector, in that for advanced training most therapists have to travel to Dublin. Now a wide selection of advanced training courses is available in Claremorris in the evenings and at weekends – exactly when it suits busy salons. Courses use leading brands such as MUD Make Up, Astonishing Nails and Wax Logic. Full time courses are also on offer for school leavers seeking a rewarding career with excellent opportunities. The full time Beauty Therapy course runs for 9 months, Monday to Friday, followed by a one month work experience placement. Graduates of Skin Deep Institute will be well qualified therapists with

Appeal from Oxfam Castlebar shop “Make Christmas a little sweeter for people in need” This November and December, the Oxfam Castlebar shop is urging people to choose their Christmas presents from its range of Unwrapped gifts. Since Oxfam first launched its Unwrapped range of Christmas presents more than 500,000 people in countries like Tanzania and Malawi have had their lives improved and at the same time mums, dads, grannies and teachers all around Mayo have received Unwrapped gifts like goats, seeds and school books that have made them smile. In 2010, residents of County Mayo raised a total of €6,052 towards Unwrapped and this year Shop Manager Catherine Cunniffe is hoping Castlebar can match that total and spread even more goodwill at this time of year. As Catherine, Oxfam Castlebar Shop Manager says, “It’s not every day your shopping list includes bees or a donkey; it might well include a Turkey but not really

one whose job is to be a life-changer. This year we’re hoping people will continue to buy Christmas gifts like these to help put an end to global poverty. If we can match last year’s total we can raise enough to help hundreds of families in Africa.” Award-winning Irish radio and television presenter Lucy Kennedy is supporting Oxfam Unwrapped in 2011. As well as helping to promote the launch of the campaign, Lucy is a big fan of the gifts and the way they work. She said: “Oxfam Unwrapped gifts are fantastic Christmas presents. Every single gift is tailor-made to empower people and improve lives. They really are some of the best gifts you could give this year.” When you give an Oxfam Unwrapped gift for Christmas it goes to an individual, a family, or even a whole community in the countries where Oxfam works. You receive an exclusive gift card and fridge

magnet to give to your friend or family member on the day; or Oxfam can send it directly with a personalised message from you. Prices in the 2011 range of Unwrapped gifts start from €7 for the mosquito net gift. Other gifts include chicks (€9), turkey (€20), piglets (€33), goat/s (€38/€76), cow (€105), farmyard (€179), cooking stove (€15), school books (€18), sunflowers (€24), drinking water for 3 families (€25), give girls a headstart (€30), plant trees (€36), feed a family (€45), supergranny (€59), water for a community [1,100 people] (€1,000) and water for a community [3,300 people] (€3,000). Historic day as married men to be ordained in ? Sligo

IN what has been described as an historic day in the life of the local Church six married Catholics will be ordained later this week in Sligo to carry out specific functions. These will include baptisms, funerals, liturgies and even weddings. It is considered that developments such as these are essential with the shortage of regular clergy and the introduction of what will be known as Permanent Deacons may help many parishes in the country from disappearing. The six, all men, will be ordained in a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at

2.30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon by Bishop Christy Jones. A statement in the Cathedral’s online bulletin says the six men will ''assist the Bishop and priests in their pastoral ministry”. In addition to baptisms, funerals and weddings, the Permanent Deacons may also preach and take care of various charitable works. Many people will look upon this as a positive move in the life of the church which may result in a renewal of sorts while others will look on it as a necessary response to the shortage of vocations. Many may not be aware that the office of Permanent Deacon was a feature of the early Church and was restored as an ordained ministry by the Second Vatican Council 50 years ago. ''They will continue in their chosen professions,'' adds the bulletin: ''and minister parttime in various parishes throughout the dioceses.'' Member of the public are invited to attend next Saturday's ceremony.

Local Sligo Community Come Out in Force to Shape Wild Atlantic Way

H

opes and Dreams Montessori School were delighted with the recent visit from Professor Gail Jordan of Minnesota. Professor Jordan is well known for her work in the design of the innovative kindergarten family literacy programme Project Ease. After giving talks in both Trinity College, Dublin and IT Sligo on Early years literacy

Professor Jordan was delighted to get the opportunity to see early years literacy in action in Ireland. Hopes and Dreams Montessori School is a big advocate of early years literacy and it plays a crucial part in the programme of Care and Education. Professor Gail Jordan was accompanied by Dr. Perry Share and Roisin McGloine both from IT Sligo.

Fáilte Ireland held two public meetings in Enniscrone and Sligo town for local communities in Sligo to get involved in the development of the Wild Atlantic Way, a significant new driving route for the west coast. The Wild Atlantic Way is set to be Ireland’s first long-distance driving route for tourists, featuring a 1,400km driving route from Donegal to West Cork. It is anticipated that the Wild Atlantic Way will be launched in 2014 – the current stage, identifying the route, is only the start of the process to develop a driving route to rival the best in the world. A Route Identification Report is now available on the Fáilte Ireland website www.failteireland.ie/wildatlanticway <http://www.failteireland.ie/wildatlanticway> which contains proposals for a ‘preferred route’ for the Wild Atlantic Way. Views and comments are being invited and should be received in writing by Friday 14th December. Speaking about the project, Paddy Mathews from Fáilte Ireland said –

“We were delighted to see such a great turnout in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone and the Clarion Hotel, Sligo town, which shows the local interest in the Wild Atlantic Way. The next two years will involve a lot of hard work - developing a series of world class viewing points along the west coast, erecting directional signs, developing loops and itineraries in each of the destinations through which the route passes and devising a comprehensive marketing strategy and campaign. “Most importantly though, we will be working with the local tourism industry so that they are ready to capitalise on the opportunities that will be on offer as a result of the Wild Atlantic Way.” To begin the development process, the spine of the route will be identified – the single route that will lead the visitor along the Atlantic coast – and then later in 2013, it will be supplemented by identifying loops off the spine which will encourage visitors to circulate within the wider destinations along the west coast.

Tooreen man’s new game can “sweep” the boards

A

NEW board game invented by Tooreen native Kieran Henry could be the big seller this Christmas and it is believed to be the first board game devised and patented in the west of Ireland. Kieran Henry has worked as a landscaper and gardener for many years, but has always had an inventive mind. He is currently enthused and excited with the response to his new board game which goes nationwide this

Christmas. ‘Foxes and Chickens’ is being stocked by Smyth Toys and Toymaster at their stores around the country. It will also be available at World of Wonder, Ballina. According to Kieran, the idea was spawned while visiting his brother’s farm and he felt it was very cheeky of the fox who had made off with two of the chickens. That was in November 2009 and with the idea in his head he set about with great enthusiasm

to produce rough drawings. Eventually, he came up with a prototype. Firstly, he tried the game out by playing it with his two sons and other family members. After a few months of tweaking and changing bits they were happy with the game. “I and my two brothers, Padraic and Dermot, formed a company and we made up a more professional prototype. After about two years of research we have finally arrived at our finished product. It has been an interesting journey so far and we know there are many more twists and turns before this story is finished.” Getting the game out for Christmas has been a great boost as these are the prime weeks of the year for the purchase of such products. Ballyhaunis Chamber of Commerce were delighted to lend their support to Kieran and will help promote the product as much as possible. Listeners to the Joe Duffy Show would have heard Kieran

speaking with the popular Liveline show host about the product. This was a major boost for Kieran. Joe’s enthusiastic response generated a wave of goodwill for the venture. In an age when computer games have taken such a grip it is indeed refreshing to know that there will always be a demand for the good old fashioned games that directly involves families and friends sitting around the table and away from the TV or computer screens. For sheer fun and entertainment board games still retain a magic that can never be had from computer games. Foxes and Chickens is now available from The Gem and Newsround, Ballyhaunis, Totally Toys, Castlebar, World of Wonder, Ballina, Flanagan’s in Tulsk, Smyths Toys (Claremorris) and countrywide, most Toymaster outlets and other premises around the country. Details of the game and how to acquire it can be found on their website www.hencro.com.

Opening of Drumshanbo Multipurpose all weather facility AS the rain poured down in Drumshanbo on Thursday of last week it proved an appropriate launch-pad for the town’s new all weather multifunctional recreation facility which was certainly put to the test against the elements. The facility which is located behind the Mayflower Centre and adjacent to Drumshanbo Vocational School, showed its worth during the opening as it shone through the undesirable weather. The astro turf, which can be used for a variety of sports and in any weather all year round is a very impressive and functional facility. The grounds also have impressive floodlights which means that games can be played at night. Drumshanbo Vocational school will use the facility each day during school term and afterwards the pitch is available to the whole community through appointment. After testing out the grounds with a playful kick about, Cathoirleach Enda Stenson officially opened the facility. He pointed out that during a recession,

recreation is vital and he was delighted to see this facility here. He acknowledged the “hard work” that went into securing funding and said he hopes “young and old” will enjoy the result. Acting Principal of Drumshanbo Vocational School Sean Wynne was also praised for his involvement in the project. Padraig McLoughlin, Chairperson of Drumshanbo Community Council, said they are “eternally grateful” for the funding for this much needed facility. He thanked everyone involved in bringing the project to fruition. Leitrim County Manager Jackie Maguire said it was great to see the facility in the surrounds of Lough Allen. She said the Drumshanbo astro turf was the first of a number of projects being funded from the Harnessing Natural Resources budget of €3m. The facility was funded through the European Harnessing Natural Resources (HNR) project, which comprises 26 rural tourism and enterprise initiatives across

the three counties of Cavan, Fermanagh and Leitrim including three flagship projects, Dowra Courthouse, the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre and the Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre. Delivery of the project will be managed by a consortium led by Cavan County Enterprise Board and comprising Cavan County Council, Fermanagh District Council, Leitrim County Council, Swanlinbar Development Association, Coillte and Inland Fisheries Ireland. HNR aims to build on cross-border opportunities by promoting a shared approach to rural regeneration through tourism, enterprise and social development.

Health and Wellbeing Evening a Resounding Success

Pictured at the Health and Wellbeing Event hosted by Connacht Gold and the National Dairy Council at the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, are Jackie Cahill, chairman, National Dairy Council; Tony Bates, psychologist; Paula Mee, expert nutritionist and Aaron Forde, CEO of Connacht Gold.

THE HEAD of Finance at Roscommon County Council has warned that the council could publish the names of businesses who don’t pay their water charges and rates. Responding to a call from the Concerned Business and Householders for transparency from the council, Mr Martin Lydon told a meeting last week: “If we want clear transparency, that includes naming defaulters who aren’t paying their rates. We’re happy to be transparent, if we want we should be publishing the names of all defaulters in relation to rates. We haven’t done that before but the council is allowed to publish the names of defaulters and those with uncollected rates at the close of the financial year in a newspaper,” Mr Lydon outlined. “A number of businesses can afford to pay their rates and water charges. Perhaps if they paid what was due to the county council, we could afford overdraft and legal costs, put more money into frontline services and therefore allow us to reduce rates,” he commented. The finance officer also took issue with a number of points raised about the council’s finances by the Concerned Business and Householders in a recent letter. “The group has only taken a snapshot of the accounts and has not looked at the overall context of the accounts,” Mr Lydon emphasised.

Aaron Forde, CEO of Connacht Gold, said on the night, “This event is very much a ‘thank you’ to our loyal customers and I hope that everyone here tonight will take away something of value to keep their families happy and healthy

this Christmas season.” Jackie Cahill, chairman of the NDC, also said, “We are delighted to host this event with Connacht Gold; tonight is a celebration of Irish dairy products – recognising them as important sources of many nutrients, as well as their versatility in cooking and baking.” For further information, please visit the Connacht Gold facebook page, or the NDC website, www.ndc.ie.

CASTLECONNOR Amateur Dramatic Society are back on stage bringing a uniquely Irish slant on the telling of Robin O'Hood. The cast have been busying themselves in rehearsals for the last month, under the direction of Gretta Harrison and Tommy Barrett. With a cast of over forty joined by national school students singing carols and songs in the show along with the secondary school students and Foroige members contributing to the all-singing, all-dancing repertoire, it promises to be an evening of comedic entertainment. Robin O'Hood has been transported from his usual haunt of Sherwood to Merkleham and tells the tale of the evil Sherriff Hogan who, along with his henchmen, will not stop until they have increased taxes and sought payment from every family for the septic tank fees. Robin and his merry men try their best

to thwart the plans of the sherriff and of course Robin has the Beautiful Maid Marion to occupy his thoughts also. With the cast singing and dancing their way through the show the inevitable climatic scene featuring an Archery competition steals the limelight as the sherriff trys to cheat his way to victory. Can Robin and his men evade capture from Hogan's henchmen? Will Maid Marion and Robin get married? Will the sherriff win the archery contest? Can Friar Tuck sing? Will the Rabbitte family be able to pay their septic tank fees? For the answer to these questions and an evening of laughter and old fashioned entertainment get to the Castleconnor Community Centre where the Pantomime Robin O'Hood will be staged on Friday 7th , Saturday 8th , and Sunday 9th of December. county. There is no other county in Ireland that can rival Mayo for its natural beauty and for the wealth and diversity of wildlife habitats found here. From the mountains to the coast, to the rivers and lakes, peatlands, farmland, the wealth is truly remarkable. “We hope that this book will encourage people to explore their local area and further afield, visit a woodland, a bog, or a lake shore, climb a mountain, take a walk along a beach, and look around at the wildlife that inhabits or uses these places” said Deirdre Cunningham. “The book highlights a selection of species that you will find in these places and gives a description, an illustration and useful information about each” she added. The book is available from the Heritage Office of Mayo County Council. Tel 094 9047684, email heritage@mayococo.ie, and also from Mayo book shops around the county, cost €20.

Achill-henge still standing one-year on

IT was the subject of much publicity and legal controversy and remarkable for its size and the audacity of its construction. One year on the structure known as Achill-henge remains standing on a hill above Pollagh on Achill Island. Its builder, controversial developer and Achill native Joe McNamara, and his stone structure, which is close to fifteen feet high and 100 metres in circumference, has been the subject of lengthy court battles. It was built without planning permission. McNamara argued it didn’t require it; Mayo County Council demurred and the High Court and An Bord Pleanála agreed with the local

authority and Joe McNamara was informed he must take Achill-henge down. However, on Sunday last, exactly one year from when construction started, it was still standing strong on commonage land above Pollagh. Graffiti currently adorns parts of the structure. The first statement people see as they approach reads ‘Hands off MCC leave alone’. Another column has ‘lest we forget’ daubed on it while ‘we went bust’ is written on the inside of a column. ‘Viva Joe’ is also written on an inside column. In the middle of the structure a concrete semi-circle is still visible, as is a rectangular concrete base. It’s believed the second phase of the structure was designed to be placed here but one year on from the completion of the first phase, the future of Achill-henge remains very unclear. A spokesperson for Mayo County Council said last week that High Court enforcement procedures were ‘in the course of being followed through. The council did indicate some weeks ago that if Joe McNamara doesn’t take down the structure, they will and he will be liable for the cost.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE

Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process

A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.

A Loss Assessor will:

• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf

Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company.

• Public Loss Assessors • Independent Claim Estimators • Property Damage Insurance Consultants

There are always grey areas Claims assessing is not an exact science and there are many instances where there is no absolute answer to the way a claim for a particular item should be settled. Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. When should I appoint my Loss Assessor?

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?

The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims

Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your

Manchester’s Mayo Community Greets President of Ireland

Cllr James Hennigan with President of Ireland - Michael D.Higgins and his wife, Sabina.

M

anchester’s Mayo community turned out in force to greet the President of Ireland – Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina Coyne at ManchesterTown Hall on Thursday 22 November. The President in his speech to the audience which was delivered in English and in Gaelic, congratulated the assembled community on their work in keeping the Irish culture alive in the UK. He also used the opportunity to promote and urge support for the forthcoming 2013 Gathering in Ireland The President was first greeted by St Mary’s GAA coach

and Levenshulme’s very own Olympic Torch bearer – Brenda Harkin and the team captain of St Mary’s award winning GAA team – Lawrence Hennigan junior (whose Irish roots stem from Attymass in County Mayo). Lawrence recently had the privilege of playing at Croke Park during Mayo's victorious win against Dublin in the All Ireland Semi-Final. Proud dad Lawrence Hennigan, the president of Levenshulme’s annual Levfest festival and the marketing director of the Manchester’s annual Irish Festival, said “It was great to

see Brenda, who has done so much work in the community, greet the President. My son came along to represent the team; I am just sorry that we did not manage to get the President to visit Levenshulme to meet the whole team.” Levenshulme’s Liberal Democrat Councillor - James Hennigan added “Manchester has always had strong connections with Ireland. The visit of President of Ireland – Michael D Higgins, can only help strengthen those ties, which are so important in the present climate. I would be delighted to see him return and would like to officially extend an invitation to him to visit Levenshulme village in South, which is home to the biggest Mayo community outside of London.” Attymass man, Declan Mulhern said “His speech on the Gathering was very moving and we hope that the President and his wife Sabina, who comes from County Mayo might be able to visit the Mayo North Gathering in August next year. I know that Sabina has a lot of relatives and friends in Ballina where the festival will be based, along with the parishes of Attymass, Bonniconlon, Foxford, Lahardane and Swinford from the 1-9 August. It would indeed be a great honour for the area to have their support at the festival. ”

MacSharry wants Regional veterinary lab services maintained

Galway Firefighters may strike over cutbacks STRIKE action will be considered by city firemen if a County Council cutback arrangement on part-time operatives comes into force, the SIPTU union has warned. Galway County Council were due to implement a new work regime from December 1 that would mean part-time or ‘retained’ firemen would only be ‘called in’ as back-up when their full time colleagues were more than five miles away from their Claddagh base. Under the current arrangements, the ‘part timers’ are called in when their full-time colleagues are working outside a 2.5 mile radius from their work base. The new proposals are understood to be part of a cost-cutting package. This week a SIPTU representative warned that for ‘a very small amount’ in savings, lives could end up being put at risk because of the proposed measure. Anthony McCormack, SIPTU Assistant Organiser, told the local press that where time was vital – such as in the case of water rescues – the availability of the retained (part-time) firemen in such emergencies could be the difference between life and death. “We would really have to ask the question at this stage: What price is a life worth? The really strange thing about this whole issue, is that the funding is there and provided for, under the budget for emergency services,” said Mr. McCormack. He said that there were very real and serious concerns – both among the firemen and the general public – that safety and, indeed, life and death, could be compromised, with the introduction of the new measures. He warned that the union and its members were now considering the option of strike action over the coming weeks, if the Council declined to defer their new proposals.

SENATOR Marc Mac Sharry has called on Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to immediately confirm his plans for regional veterinary laboratories throughout the country. Senator Mac Sharry has called on Minister Coveney to maintain existing services, following rumours that the Minister plans to consolidate a number of labs, resulting in the closure of some regional centres across the country. “These laboratories provide vitally important services to the farming community. The provision of post-mortem and sample testing is critical in the continuing good health of the national herd. Any closure of the regional services will continually undermine the potential to maintain the health of the herd,” the Sligo Senator said. Centres in Sligo, Athlone, Kilkenny, Celbridge, Limerick and Cork provide a valuable service to

the farming community. Closing any of these regional centres would further undermine rural Ireland and the farming sector's ability to perform to its full potential. Senator Mac Sharry continued: “Labour and Fine Gael continue to display a blatant disregard for rural Ireland. This Government is marginalising rural communities through cuts to small schools, the closure of local garda stations, a complete dismissal of the needs of small farmers, discriminatory and unworkable commonage management plan and now with the rumoured closure of the regional veterinary laboratories. Where will it end? “I am calling on the Minister to immediately clarify the future of these services and to begin to acknowledge that rural Ireland and the North West region have a huge amount to contribute to national recovery.”

AC/DC seal digital downloads deal

Stress link to online social groups

Rock giants AC/DC have become one of the last major bands to agree a deal to have their back catalogue released digitally. The band - famed for tracks such as Back In Black - were among a number of acts who had held back on allowing their music to be sold as downloads through sites such as the iTunes Store. Groups including The Beatles and Radiohead eventually tied up deals which allowed their music to be sold digitally. Now the Australian/British rockers have joined them after with their entire catalogue - dating back to their 1976 debut High Voltage - cleared for online sales. AC/DC's 16 studio albums plus four live albums and three compilations have been mastered for iTunes and went on sale on Monday. The entire digital set of studio albums is selling for ÂŁ79.99.

Game fans queue for Wii U console Nintendo has launched its eagerly anticipated Wii U in the UK - the first major home console launch since 2006. Close to 300 fans queued outside HMV's Oxford Street store in London, which hosted the official midnight launch following the US release earlier this month, a spokesman for Nintendo said. HMV ensured it was well-stocked for the launch following high demand for preorders. The Wii U features the GamePad controller, a tablet-type device that allows users to continue playing after the connected television has been turned off or switched to another channel. The controller boasts a 6.2in touchscreen display and a three to five-hour battery life. Among the games expected to be bestsellers are ZombiU, which carries an 18 age restriction, Nintendo Land - the Wii Sports for the new console - and New Super Mario Bros U. The console has received mixed reviews in the US, with most concerns surrounding the amount of games that will be available to justify the minimum ÂŁ250 cost. Others have mentioned the controller's weak battery performance, a lack of stand-out launch games and frustrating menus and online services. Four men had camped outside the store since Saturday to ensure they would be the first to lay their hands on the console. But the majority of the crowd joined the queue on Thursday evening, entertained by a DJ set and gaming experts. Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce said: "We can't wait to get the Wii U into the hands of our fans in the UK and are delighted to be partnering with HMV on this exciting night."

C

onnecting with a large number of social groups online can increase stress levels, according to a new report. As an individual increases the number of social circles they are linked to online, they become more likely to find social media a source of anxiety, ex-

perts found. The study pointed to "social landmines" which can arise when people become online friends with conflicting social spheres, such as their boss and parents as well as their usual friendship group. The report was compiled by researchers from the University

of Edinburgh Business School who surveyed more than 300 Facebook users, those taking part being mostly students with an average age of 21. Researchers concluded that stress arises when a user presents a version of themselves on social media which would be deemed unacceptable by some

of their online "friends", such as posts about swearing, drinking or smoking. The more groups of people in an individual's collection of online friends, the greater the potential for causing offence, the addition of employers or parents to the friendship list particularly resulting in the greatest increase in anxiety levels. The report said 55% of parents follow their children on Facebook and more than half of employers claim to have not hired someone on the basis of their social networking page. Researchers also noted that, on average, people are online friends with seven different social circles, the most common group being friends known offline, followed by extended family and siblings. The report also found that more people are online friends with their former partners than with their current partners. Only 56% of users were pals with their boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse online, compared with 64% of exes. A third of people used privacy settings to control the information seen by different types of friends on their profile.

Mother 'names newborn daughter after Twitter symbol Hashtag'

A new mother on Facebook has caused controversy after she apparently named her baby daughter after the Twitter symbol Hashtag.

The parent put a picture of her little girl on the social network with a post that read: 'Hashtag Jameson was born at 10oclock last night.

'She weys 8pounds and I luv her so much!!!!' Some internet users were not happy someone could name their child after a symbol that's

used on Twitter to highlight a word by putting it in front of letters. The main reaction was utter disbelief, with Twitter user @WordsOfWisdommm questioning the decision, writing: 'This women named her child.. Hashtag? 'Tf.. Why in God's name would you name your baby girl Hashtag?' @Kayla_Junker was also stunned and added: 'to the parents who named their baby girl Hashtag #Really??' Another tweeter was more concerned about how you wrote the name. @Skinnyguy23 said: 'The baby girl called # or Hashtag! #hashtag #youserious?' Ironically, several hashtags then sprung from the announcement, including #StupidestNameEver, #TerribleParenting and #FoolishParents.

Bacon flavoured shaving cream goes on sale

Police mistake rotting bait box for corpse in fisherman's car

Men could soon wake up to the smell of bacon from their bathroom after an American company released a crackling flavoured shaving cream.

T

he smell of the breakfast meal normally emanates from the kitchen but J&D’s Foods has decided it would be a good idea if you could experience the delights of bacon while you shave. The new product is described as 'high end, luxurious bacon-scented shaving cream' and the US business adds you should use it after a hot wash or prior to a date with your potential soul mate. Justin Esch, the 'inventor' of the strange shaving product, said the smell of bacon was the most powerful. He said: 'There is nothing more powerful than the smell of bacon, nothing. Bacon is the smell of champions. 'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and bacon is the best part of breakfast. Why not smell like it and be the best?' The self-titled bacontrepreneur has also come up with other pork inspired products such as bacon salt. He added: 'Bacon is delicious, people get excited when they smell it. 'When you walk into a room don’t you want people to be excited to see you?' Bacon flavoured shaving cream is available for around $14.99 (£9).

Firefighters remove roof of house to help man impaled on table leg in loft Firefighters were forced to cut off the roof of a house in St Albans, Hertfordshire, so they could help a man who was impaled on a metal table leg in his loft in what was described as a 'very delicate incident'. THE man had to be taken to hospital with the metal table leg still attached. Ambulance crews were called to the house just after 6pm on Saturday. The man was brought out of the section of roof by firefighters and taken to St Mary's Paddington Hospital in London. An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said firefighters had to approach the incident with care, and work well with paramedics. The spokesman said: 'This was a very delicate incident to deal with and our crews, a critical care paramedic and Hart operatives worked extremely hard alongside the fire service in a very difficult environment to treat, stabilise and immobilise him before he was removed out of the roof to an awaiting ambulance. 'Due to the confined space, the fire service removed a section of the roof so the patient could be passed through onto their aerial ladder which brought him down to ground level.'

Police broke into a fisherman's car in Norfolk after mistaking a fly-ridden bait box for a rotting corpse, it has been claimed. George Wallis said his Chrysler Neon, parked in North Walsham, had its rear windscreen smashed before the officer involved realised his mistake. A passer-by had called 999 after becoming worried that a swarm of flies visible in the car hinted at grisly contents, but in fact the bluebottles had hatched from maggots in a bait box four days earlier. Police subsequently towed the car to Great Yarmouth, but Mr Wallis said he will have to pay for the car to be scrapped as he cannot afford the £150 towing fee or the £20-a-day storage charge. 'The police made my vehicle insecure by breaking into it, they should pay not me,' he told the Daily Telegraph. 'I can't afford to get it back, but I need a vehicle.' Norfolk constabulary said the car appeared to be abandoned when it was broken into. 'The officer had genuine concerns about what could have been in the vehicle,' the force said. 'If the owner feels they shouldn't pay, they can write to legal services at force headquarters.'

Drunk farmer drove three wheeled tractor A farmer has been banned from driving after he drove five miles with just three wheels on his tractor before passing out. Drunk Marcin Pietrowski, 39, was arrested when police in Janow, Poland, found him fast asleep in a ditch beside a dirt road leading to his farm. "We had lots of calls from other drivers saying he could barely steer the vehicle," said a police spokesman. "When we got there, he'd stopped the tractor and had fallen out of the cab where he passed out," they added. Shamefaced Marcin - now facing a hefty fine or jail - told police: "I'd had a few and needed to get home but I'd completely forgotten there were only three wheels on that tractor."

Red State, Blue State: 10 Tips for Feuding Families to heal or even dare to get together. But a recent vacation was a great success, she says, largely because they avoided getting into touchy subjects after having a few drinks. Recognize your triggers As you prepare for your next family gathering, think about what's happened in the past, and also about what others do that triggers you to react, says Julie Glovin, a clinical social worker from Worcester, Mass. "What feelings come up when you get triggered?" Glovin says. "Do you have a history of not being validated in your thoughts? Not heard? What happens to you physically and behaviorally? Does your stomach hurt? Do you want to cry? Do you reach for another glass of wine?" Identifying your triggers can help you control your anger.

It's normal to disagree It may help to know that arguments aren't necessarily a sign that your family is dysfunctional. "If you are willing to get into any depth of a relationship with anyone and be genuine, you will eventually run into areas in which the two of you don't see eye to eye," says Simon Rego, PsyD, director of psychology training at Montefiore Medical Center, in the Bronx, N.Y. The same is true, of course, in family relationships, he says. Although there usually is less conflict in su-

perficial relationships, Rego says, "You don't get the richness of human connection." Don't drink too much Jennifer S. (not her real name), an editor and mom from New Jersey, learned this lesson the hard way when her liberal family teamed up on her beloved—but conservative—stepdad during a boozy post9/11 argument that ended with him leaving the house. She didn't witness the scene, but knew it took a while for the family

Take a time-out If you're starting to feel angry or threatened, it's a good idea to take a time-out to collect your thoughts. "Ideally we give our kids time-outs so they learn to manage their feelings; we need to do the same for ourselves," Glovin says. "Remind yourself that you are an adult and your thoughts are valid." It's OK to disengage and say, "I don't think this is a good conversation to have—I'm getting too worked up." Control your reaction Much as we would like to, we can't control how other people behave—but we can control how we

react. "Family relationships fall back on old habits, so someone might try to goad you by saying, ‘You're too sensitive,'" Glovin says. "Take a moment. Is it true? Do you agree?" If not, recognize that—and that it might be the other person's issue. By reacting differently than you might have in the past, she says, you're changing the family dynamic—and maybe pushing the other person to react differently too. Avoid labels A person and their politics are not the same thing. "You have to recognize that people are more than their political beliefs," Jennifer says. "They are deserving of respect....It's not that they're Darth Vader, it's just a different perspective." Don't get caught up in thinking, "they're stubborn or they're racist or they're sexist or they're homophobic or they're so righty or they're so lefty," Rego says. "They get put in a box, so if you're in a different one, you only see difference." Agree to disagree Take a look at the dinner-table debate and know that trying to change someone else's mind is pretty much always a lost cause, Glovin says. "Are people trying to share information to help each other be better informed, or are we trying to change belief systems?" she says. "The latter is futile—and ultimately people are looking for their own beliefs to be validated. Agreeing to disagree can be a way to validate and defuse the situation."

TED & CO: THE DINNER SHOW Smash hit comedy treat Ted & Co is on its way to the Theatre Royal, straight from a 26 date tour of Ireland in which it gained critical acclaim from national Irish broadcaster RTE. A tribute to the cult TV classic Father Ted, the unique and interactive comedy dining experience ‘Ted & Co – The Dinner Show’ debuted at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival selling out every show and picking up five star audience reviews, thanks to an evening of high-energy improvisation, audience participation and perfect comic timing. The priests are heading east from Craggy Island to serve up another comedy treat this December. Mrs Doyle, the housekeeper is never far away with her precious teapot and sees it as her sole purpose in life to supply the priests and audience with copious amounts of tea. Performed to perfection, the highly acclaimed cast combine satire and surrealism with a good helping of old fashioned comedy to bring the tribute show to life, it’s highly interactive and a delicious 3course meal is included, this 2-hour show promises a hilarious and fun evening, with the audience as the diners and Ted, Dougal, Jack & Mrs Doyle as the hosts. Not to be missed! (Ahh, Go on, Go on, Go on, Go on!). The most enjoyable dining experience you will ever have! So, it’s no surprise that the sell-out shows at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe earned high praise: “Best show I’ve seen in years”, ”Hilarious from beginning to end”,

”Excellent show, lots of laughs”, ”Acting was great” were just some of the audience reviews. The Ted & Co Dinner Show is suitable

to book for corporate, private and public events. Tickets €50 per person, including sit down meal. Available from The Royal Theatre Box Office on 094 9023111.

TOP TEN TOYS TO BUY YOUR CHILD THIS CHRISTMAS

L

EGO, Cabbage Patch Kids and other retro toys are being tipped to make a comeback this Christmas. The Toy Retailers Association unveiled its top 13 Dream Toys expected to fly off the shelves during festive season. As well as modern gadgets and electronic tablets, children are likely to be unwrapping some old favourites on Christmas morning. Making a comeback is the Furby, the electronic owl-like creature which soared to popularity in 1998. Around 40 million were sold in the first three years of production although the phase didn’t last for long. The latest model

sports expressive LCD eyes and the ability to adapt their personality in reaction to user behaviour. Also making the list are Monster High Ghouls Rule dolls and a Web Shooting Spiderman. Parents are also expected to shell out for electronic children’s tablets and other electronic toys and games. The InnoTab 2, a multi-media learning device which children can use to read books, play games and draw pictures, is tipped to be a favourite. The similar LeapPad 2is also expected to be a popular addition to Christmas stockings this year.
