JMS DIGITAL SYSTEMS Channels Hot Chef Top 10 place for Jamestown chef Time200+ to Change - Free to View
H
e is well-known in Jamestown, but is now reaching higher levels. Jamestown chef, Sham Hanifa, has been named in the Bridgestone Guide’s Top 10 Hot Chefs for 2013. Sham came in at number six in the top 10. The accolade is the latest in a string of honours for Sham who opened The Cottage Restaurant in 2008. Since
then Sham has earned a reputation as a cult chef, with unique menus based on a fusion of European dishes created with an Asian twist. Sham prides himself on using only the freshest of locally sourced ingredients admitting it’s something he is “very focused on”. Taking this philosophy to the next
stage, he is now working on creating a garden at the rear of his premises which will contain not only freshly grown herbs and vegetables, but also edible flowers and salad leaves as well. “I wanted to have a garden where my customers can come and see where we source some of our ingredients from. The idea is not only to show the emphasis we place on food from garden to plate, but also to help educate people about Although Sham already had some capacity for growing produce for his restaurant before this, with the assistance of Mary Maguire from Attirory Allotments, he is working to greatly expand the capacity of his garden. Their hard work is already beginning to pay off and it is expected that all groundwork and initial planting will be complete by the end of this month. “I think that Irish people are now more adventurous than then used to be about food but there is a growing interest in knowing just where the food you eat is coming from. People want to know that food is not only traceable, but also locally produced,” notes Sham. The award winning chef also believes in changing his menu to reflect what is in season. “I change my menu every three months. I like to reflect what produce is in season and I like to challenge myself to create something different for my customers. This is something I love. I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t.”
Ballina Lions to raise funds with “Race the Ras” Ballina Lions Club will take part in Ras 2013 (Race the Ras Charity Cycle) to raise funds for three charities – Breast Cancer Research, Multiple Sclerosis and Cystic Fibrosis. Members and friends will cycle 145 km from Naas to Skerries as part of the fund-raising effort. Cheques will be presented to the three chosen charities in Skerries at the conclusion of the Ras. Cystic Fibrosis is Ireland’s most common life-threatening inherited
disease. CF affects the glands, damaging many organs including the lungs, pancreas, the digestive tract and the reproductive system. Funds raised from this event are required to build the much-needed five-bedroom MS Respite Centre at Woodhaven, Sea Road, Sligo. This building will provide a spacious treatment facility and residential accommodation in a scenic location for people in the North West with Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions, their families
and friends. All donations will be greatly accepted. Funds can be transferred to the following bank account: AIB Bank, Pearse St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. Account No: 03456043; Sort Code: 937079. Further information can be obtained from Oliver Murphy (087) 2441605, Mattie Coleman or any member of Ballina Lions Club. Last year the club raised over €20,000 for Aware and Local Charities in the same sponsored cycle.

St. Mary’s Secondary School hosts cyclists supporting Suicide Prevention

ECRET Millionaire Jim Breen lauded Ballina’s St. Mary’s Secondary School for its “outstanding” welcome on Monday last, April 29, when hundreds of cyclists rolled into the north Mayo capital for the national Cycle Against Suicide. Led by Mr Breen, the CEO of Pulse Learning, told the 600-strong student cohort: “The welcome we have received here has delivered the message of positive mental health. It has boosted our mental health today. The message we are spreading is “it’s ok not to feel ok, and it’s more than ok to ask for help” and that message is loud and clear here today in Ballina.” Addressing invited guests, students, teachers and the wider community, the television personality and business man, outlined his own personal story of depression and mental health issues and the legacy of his Secret Millionaire show, which saw thousands of cyclists taking to the highways and byways of the country in an anti-suicide awareness campaign. Echoing his message of positive mental health was Joseph Dixon, who lost his son
to suicide accompanied by two other speakers, Collette and Manus. The speakers gave a personal and very powerful presentation on the importance of ‘TLC’ - talking, listening and calling for help. St. Mary’s Secondary School Principal, Mrs Patsy Sweeney, said the school was “honoured” to welcome the participants. “This is a very special event for St. Mary’s

South Roscommon man is top earner
A SOUTH Roscommon man has come in on top of the list of highest-earning bosses in Ireland in 2012, scooping €15.5m in pay and bonus share deals. Owen Killian, chief executive of international food group, Aryzta, is a native of Hezeldene, Drum. Mr Killian, who has a degree in Agricultural Science from UCD, earned over €42,000 a day last year, fuelled by a mega bonus share payout and a €3.85m salary. Mr Killian’s pay was a reward for having completely transformed Aryzta from the Irish-focused IAWS croissant and agri-business firm into a €4bn global
and we are proud to spread the message that it is ok not to feel ok,” she said. Paying tribute to the wider community of Ballina, she added: “If ever we needed proof that Ballina is a powerful place, then today is certainly the evidence. The response of the town has been absolutely overwhelming with sponsorship coming from an endless list of businesses in the community. The minute the message of suicide prevention was mentioned, the people came out in huge numbers to support us and for that we are eternally grateful. The response has been truly incredible.” The all-girls secondary school was chosen as one of just 28 anchor stops across Ireland over the duration of the two week cycle in association with the 2FM Colm Hayes Show. As part of the Ballina stop off, cyclists will be provided with refreshments sponsored by scores of local businesses, while students attended the positive mental health presentation. A host of dignitaries were in attendance including Ballina Mayor, Cllr Willie Nolan, deputies Dara Calleary and Michelle Mulherin as well as Chair of the Board of Management, Sr Mary Corr, Board of Management members and Parents Council representatives. The event also incorporated a mental health organisation exhibition with organisation representatives on hand to discuss the importance of positive mental health.
?
power. Aryzta was created in 2008 when Mr Killian merged IAWs with Swiss baked goods firm Hiestand. The 50-year-old who now resides in Dublin is the son the late Peter and Maureen, Hazeldene, Drum. The late Mr Killian is well-known throughout the West of Ireland, having been an NFA activist for many decades. Earlier this year Aryzta moved to substantially transform its European manufacturing business with the €280m acquisition of German bakery company Klemme. The Zurich- and Dublin-based group said the deal remained consistent with its
policy of targeting acquisitions “which add new geographies, customers, channels, and product capability”. The company’s share price has risen sharply as profits have gone through the roof. Last year, the Aryzta executive bonus scheme paid out in spades, with Mr Killian bagging shares worth €12.12m at yearend. Mr Killian’s right-hand man at Aryzta, Patrick McEniff, was in second position on the pay list, having earned an estimated €9.97m last year. Much of Mr McEniff’s earnings came from the bonus scheme payout, which saw him pick up shares worth €7.27m at year end.

New Bishop of Kerry served as priest in Sligo M
OST people from Sligo would be familiar with Fr. Raymond Brown who served in St. Mary’s for seven years from 1995 to 2002. The popular priest, who had previously served as Spiritual Director at Summerhill College from 1983 to 2002, has just been appointed the new Bishop of Kerry. 56-year-old Fr. Browne was educated at Summerhill from 1969 to 1974. Since 2008 he has been responsible for the safeguarding of children in the Diocese of Elphin while serving as a parish priest in County Roscommon. A canon lawyer, he has worked as a judicial vicar in Elphin, judging cases that come to the diocesan ecclesiastical court. In a statement of welcome Cardinal Sean Brady said last night that he had known Fr Brown "for many years" and said that Bishopelect Brown "will prove to be an excellent and gentle pastor, a faithful teacher of the faith

and a trustworthy and generous leader". Fr Browne's move to Kerry is the fourth episcopal appointment in the Irish Church in six months. Last March, seven out of 26 dioceses needed new bishops. On appointing Bishop-elect Browne, the Pope accepted the resignation of Bishop William Murphy, who has reached the retirement age of 75. The new Bishop also has directly met in the past with the Papal Nuncio, Charles Brown. Fr Browne is still a surprise choice, not least since he is currently serving in the Elphin diocese. He has never served in Kerry. He has never featured publicly in shortlists for the vacancy which exists here in Elphin. Bishop Christy Jones in Elphin submitted his resignation when he turned 75 in March 2011. A native of Athlone, Fr Browne’s CV lists his extensive experience in marriage counselling and child protection.
Star dancer James helps Manchester troupe for Mayo Gathering THE Manchester based multi-award winning Irish dancer, James Keegan, who is one of the principal dancers of the world-famous ‘Lord of the Dance’ show. is just one of the stars who has confirmed his appearance at a special ‘Young, Gifted & Green’ re-union concert for the Manchester-Mayo Gathering. The special event will take place on Friday 2 August at the prestigious Ballina Arts Theatre. It will feature performances from former members of ‘YGG’ and the Keegan Academy of Irish Dance along with a host of special guests from Manchester and performers from Mayo which include the Atlantic Rhythm Production company and Carmel Gunning. The group is still looking for other performers and companies from Mayo who would like to get involved with the event. Tony Hennigan, one of the organisers of the event and the creative director of the troupe which was based at St Bede’s College, said “The idea for the re-union came from Louise Keegan who was the group’s choreographer and now has her own Irish Academy with her brother, James. They have already been in touch with a number of former members who are scattered around the globe. We want to try and trace as many of the hundreds of performers and special guests that have been involved with group over the last 15 years. Everyone is being invited to either come along to perform
or just to enjoy this special one-off concert and weekend celebrations. For further information they can email mayogathering@gmail.com or contact me direct on 00447912512977. Vincent Roche, chair of the Mayo North Welcome Home Festival, which incorporates the Manchester-Mayo Gathering, said “I look forward to welcoming a big influx of visitors from Manchester and other UK centres to North Mayo for the Welcome Home Festival which runs from 1st to 9th August, 2013. We will have a full programme of day and night entertainment laid on for visitors, culminating in a Gala Dinner with former President, Mary Robinson. We can guarantee everyone a great time in Mayo. Full details of the programme are available on www.northmayo.ie” The Manchester-Mayo Gathering is part of the Mayo North 9 day flagship festival which is being sponsored by the Mayo.ie, Mayo North Gathering, the Gathering in Ireland and the Manchester-Mayo Tourism group and is working closely with Gathering events in Attymass, Bonniconlon, Ballina, Crossmolina, Lahardane and Swinford. It will feature a host of Irish Agriculture, Music, Song, Dance, Heritage, Sport and Culture events in and around North Mayo. 'Young, Gifted & Green’ was first founded in 1995 and staged its last concert in 2010, raising over €200,000 for different charities. The one

Clarity on the restrictions of the new Personal Insolvency Act
I
n recent days, the media and politicians have been highlighting the criteria of acceptable living expenses under the new Personal Insolvency Act. Reports suggest a person may be required to quit their job in order to reduce expenditure on childcare, they may have to surrender their car if there is adequate public transport locally, and they will have to live on a set amount of money every week to cover food, clothing, utility bills and other normal family expenses. This has caused some anxiety and stress for those seeking to avail of the new debt relief mechanisms contained in the Act, but it must be understood that this is not as black and white as it has been described, and is similar to process of evaluating the circumstances of a distressed debtor under the Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process (MARP). The difference is that under MARP, the banks have been negotiating directly with the borrower, and not the intermediary – the Personal Insolvency Practitioner (PIP), whose responsibility it is to obtain the full financial picture of the debtor.
Accepted levels of living expenses, called ‘trigger figures’ already exist in the UK, and are used extensively by Insolvency Practitioners and Citizens Advice Bureaux when compiling the Common Financial Statement under Insolvency laws there, so it is not surprising that our own Insolvency Service is following the same course. The purpose of the ‘trigger figures’ in the financial statement are that they are designed to serve as a guideline to Personal Insolvency Practitioners in terms of how much a family should be spending on normal living expenses, such as food, electricity, heating oil and medical expenses. They are designed to ensure that applications made under the new Insolvency Act are as efficient as possible, and that questionable expenses are explained at the earliest stage. The idea is, that a PIP along with the debtor, will work through the various expenses that the debtor has, to be submitted to their creditors. An expenditure of €600 per month on food and groceries would not be unreasonable for a family of two adults and two dependents. However where there are only two adults in the household, €600 would be considered unacceptable. This would be alerted to the PIP that is unlikely to be accepted, without some explanation, for example where a coeliac person or someone with Crohn’s disease has specific dietary requirements, and foods can be more expensive. As another example, if you are unemployed living in an urban area, and spending €200 per month on fuel would be questioned, however if you live in a rural area, this would probably be acceptable, as they have to leave kids to school or use the vehicle every time they go to the shops. Similarly, where a family has a vehicle, it will not normally be the case that the vehicle should be sold, unless the vehicle is not fit for purpose, or a cheaper
alternative may be available. It is unlikely that a debtor would be able to keep a 2011 BMW, however the family could trade down to a more reasonable or economical vehicle. Remember that in bankruptcy, you are allowed to keep a vehicle up to the value of €2000. The surrender of private health insurance is a contentious issue, but it may not necessarily have to be surrendered, as there are other factors which PIPs will have to take into account, for example if there is a history of illness or the age of the debtor, as an illness could cause an acceptable arrangement to fail. You may not be allowed to have a full Sky package, but that does not mean you have to cancel it. You may be allowed to keep the basic package. You are entitled to have a life, not just an existence. This process is also not a new concept. Prior to the introduction of the Personal Insolvency Act, we already have extensive experience of assisting debtors restructure their debts through informal arrangements, and this process is well established when negotiating with creditors. It is certainly not reinventing the wheel, but it will come under more scrutiny over the months and years ahead, once the new Insolvency regime takes effect. It must be remembered though, that the new reliefs available, such as the Debt Settlement Arrangement and the Personal Insolvency Arrangement are negotiations in themselves. PIPs must be fair to both the creditor and the debtor alike, and by acting as the intermediary will be required to get the best outcome for both parties. It will mean concessions on both sides, and it will not work unless both parties to the negotiation are realistic. Drumshanbo in lockdown over traveller fueds GARDA checkpoints were placed on all roads in and out of Drumshanbo, vehicle searches were carried out and a large number of uniformed and plain clothes officers were stationed in the town last week after concerns were raised that an ongoing traveller feud could escalate at a horse fair. Superintendent John Furlong said Gardai had received information that there may be a confrontation in the town and the Garda numbers had been increased as a “precautionary measure”. There was no trouble, no arrests were made and nothing was seized although a number of vehicles were stopped and searched entering Drumshanbo. The alert comes after two incidents over the last two weeks. On April 21, Gardai were called to the Rosebank halting site in Carrick-on-Shannon after a dispute arose between two groups of youths. Just over 24 hours later local gardai were called in to investigate a ramming incident between a car and van in the centre of Carrick-on-Shannon. Superintendent Furlong said that Gardai would continue to monitor the situation but stressed there was no indication at present of any further escalation of violence between the feuding parties. Drumshanbo based county councillor, Enda McGloin acknowledged it “was a bit disconcerting to see the increase in gardai in the town but I believe that the Gardai took appropriate action and I think people are glad they did.”

Spurning a crust: Italy suffering shortage of pizza makers T hey may be short of ways of making some dough but recession-hit Italians are reportedly reluctant to become pizza makers because of long hours and average pay. The country is short of about 6,000 ‘pizzaioili’ to deal with the nation’s insatiable hunger for a lunch-time slice, according to Italian business federation FIPE. ‘Notwithstanding the economic crisis and unemployment, it is proving difficult to find them,’ it said in a report this week. Italians in cities such as Rome, Milan and Turin are avoiding sweating over ovens and preparing dough despite the long-term recession and youth unemployment reaching about 35 per cent. Alessandro Rossi, who runs a pizzeria in Rome, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘The Italian mindset is that being a pizza-maker is humiliating, it is a manual labour job. Young Italians want to own 40,000 euro cars and wear nice
clothes but they are not prepared to work for it.’ Instead, immigrants have filled the gap and are happy to help produce the three billion pizzas scoffed in Italy each year. Filipinos, Arabs and especially Egyptians have been able to carve themselves a slice of the action in many big city restaurants and takeaways. About 100 Egyptians are training to be pizza makers each year. Cairo-born Amadeo AlWikel, who owns another pizzeria near Rome’s Trevi Fountain, said: ‘We are good at it because we are prepared to work hard. Italians, in contrast, want a nice comfortable office job where they can work six hours a day, five days a week, in air-conditioning. They’re not prepared to work 10, 12 hours a day.’ David Mandolin, the head of the Italian School for Pizza Makers, told Corriere della Sera newspaper: ‘To make a good pizza, it needs to be crunchy but also digestible. Not everyone can do that, but the Egyptians can.

Glasgow passenger plane’s ‘near miss’ with UFO leaves air experts stumped A passenger plane flying over Glasgow came within 90m (300ft) of colliding with an unidentified flying object (UFO) ‘bigger than a balloon’, an official inquiry has revealed. The pilot and his non-flying colleague saw an object ‘loom ahead’ and reported the collision risk as ‘high’, a report by the UK Airprox Board said. Experts were unable to explain the ‘blue and yellow’ object that passed below the Airbus A320, which was flying at about 3,500ft in December last year. Nothing appeared on the air traffic control radar as the aircraft flew over the area of Baillieston as it made its final approach to Glasgow airport. ‘We seemed to only miss it by a couple of hundred feet, it went directly beneath us,’ the pilot told the Glasgow Aerodrome Controller upon landing. ‘Wherever we were when we called it in it was within about ten seconds. Couldn’t tell what direction it was going but it went right underneath us.’ The board ruled out the object being a meteorological balloon, while a glider was

PAMPERED Pandora is a spider who enjoys the finer things in life. The giant Chilean tarantula was bought as a pet by Cassandra Tainsh, from Leeds, to overcome her fear of spiders, known as arachnophobia. The 20-year-old, from Leeds, decided to get a spider as a pet to conquer her terror a year ago. Her plan worked so well that Pandora became her new best friend, moved into her bedroom and was treated to a range of miniature furniture to play with. ‘I used to have a massive phobia of spiders and just before I got Pandora, I had to get my mum to get one out of my room while I was shaking and crying in the corner,’ she said. ‘But then I went to a local garden centre and there was an animal charity there that gave people the chance to handle a tarantula. I thought if I got one of my own, maybe I could overcome my fear.’ Ms Tanish has since collected another six spiders and takes pictures of them enjoying their toys. ‘Pandora is still pretty much the one who’s in charge. A lot of my friends were freaked out at first but after a while they all started asking what she was up to. That’s why I started doing things like dressing her up and getting her furniture, for a bit of fun,’ she said. ‘It’s all doll’s furniture, and the last thing I bought, the lady in the shop asked if it was a present for someone – then I told her it was for my tarantula.’

One for Me, One for You The Suspended Coffee Movement has reached Sligo. Since the concept went viral on social media in the last couple of months, local people have jumped on board in a big way. Kate Winter investigates.
I
f you haven’t heard about suspended coffee yet, let me explain. “Caffe Sospeso” as it’s called in Italy, where it has its roots, is a simple act of anonymous charity, whereby a customer ordering their coffee pays for an extra cup, which is then ‘suspended’. This suspended coffee is held, paid for and awaiting a pair of cold hands to warm, until a person in need enters the shop and enquires if there are any suspended coffees available, at which point, they receive the pre-paid coffee in question, with no money exchanging hands. This generous Neapolitan tradition, which started as a nod to the Gods after an individual found themselves on the receiving end of good fortune, has been revived in the past few years due to the recession and the ensuing Eurozone crisis. Although nowadays, it’s not so much a repayment of good fortune as an exercise of, as Oprah would put it, “Pay it Forward”. Thanks to the modern day phenomenon of social media, this charitable concept is spreading like wildfire. There are pages dedicated to the cause all over Facebook, and heartwarming memes and stories cropping up daily on the internet. Cafes all around Ireland are offering suspended coffee, as the trend makes headlines and brings a much needed boost in publicity to many small, privately owned businesses. Jessie Smith, owner of the Strandhill based mobile cafe “The Driftwood Coffee Cart”, and one of the first Sligo baristas to jump on board with the movement explains its value to her:
“It has brought with it some great, truly unexpected publicity, which is wonderful. But far more than that, the ethos of it appeals to me. It’s such a pure idea; a sense of giving, anonymously, from the heart. We’re not going to gain customers from this, but we’re helping our existing customers to do something good, which really fits in with our own ethical/fair trade model of business.” Even the big guns are getting involved lately. Starbucks, one of the biggest corpo-
rate chains of coffee shops worldwide, came under considerable fire in the media when the spotlight first shone on the Suspended Coffee Movement, with journalists and bloggers challenging them outright to join. What has ensued has been a crafty move on the part of Starbucks; moving the goalposts a little to suit their own needs. Yes, suspended coffees can be paid for in Starbucks. Yes, that coffee will find its way to somebody in need. But not in their shiny store. It will be delivered to homeless shelters and local charities in bulk, where it will be distributed. There is still good being done here, but whether the true nature of the concept of suspended coffee is being embraced is something I will leave up to you, reader, to decide. Personally, I would rather stop at a locally owned cafe on the streets of Sligo and pay for an extra cuppa, knowing that a person who will truly appreciate it will receive this from the same hands that accepted my few coins, with dignity and respect. This movement is as much about social solidarity as it is about charity. It’s important to recognise that the impact of being treated like a dignified human being in a setting which is usually out of bounds for such individuals may be almost more valuable to them than the actual cup of coffee itself. There are a few hiccoughs in this plan, wonderful as it is. Firstly, the question arises: How do the homeless and poverty stricken of Sligo know that this is happening and which cafes are going to welcome them enquiring after suspended coffees? There is an easily recognisable sign which will be visible in the windows of participating cafes, but how do we know the people who matter even know what that sign means? In other countries, there are lists of participating businesses posted in hostels and shelters – I hope this is happening in Sligo too. Because if it’s not, the goodwill and effort of Sligo businesses and people will be somewhat going to waste. I asked Brid Torrades, owner of Osta Cafe and Wine Bar, what her approach would be if they saw a lack of uptake on suspended coffees donated: “We haven’t seen so much of an uptake as yet, to be honest. I’d love to be able to
say to someone on the street, ‘Come in and have a warm coffee.’ I hope that people are going to take that approach, as well as buying the coffees, to actually take a moment to say it to someone who may be in need. I’d also consider making some kind of vouchers, which could be potentially distributed to places where they will go to the right hands, and then can be redeemed with us. If the worst comes to the worst, and the coffees aren’t claimed, I suppose we’ll put the money to some charity in the town, but I’d much rather see those coffees claimed, because that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.” All in all, it’s a great thing to see Sligo business people getting involved in such a warm-hearted project. It needs social participation to succeed. It’s that part that falls to us; the general, coffee-drinking public. I’m happy to buy a suspended coffee here and there, and bask in the warm glow of doing something simply kind for a less fortunate fellow human being. Are you?

Apple celebrates decade of iTunes Apple has been hailed for pioneering a "listening revolution" as it celebrates a decade of iTunes. The music store, which started out more than a decade ago with 200,000 songs, reached its 25 billionth download earlier this year. Since its launch on April 28 2003, iTunes has accrued a catalogue of more than 35 million songs and has around 435 million active account-holders across the world. On average, more than 15,000 songs are downloaded every minute and according to the technology website Pocket-lint, it would take more than 140,000 years to listen to every single music download available through the famous store. Gennaro Castaldo, of HMV, said the music store - along with the iPod - had "undoubtedly" played a major part in changing the way consumers discover and listen to music. "Between them, they've helped to reshape the music landscape - in the process creating a commercially viable model for digital technology in much the same way the gramophone did for recordings some 100 years ago," he said. "The challenge for Apple now is that digital consumers appear to be moving away from owned downloads to streaming, and there are now a growing number of competitors all looking to challenge their market dominance. "Demand for physical product also remains surprisingly resilient and there's even been a mini-resurgence for formats like vinyl as some fans look for a more authentic music experience." Cameron Farrelly, a music specialist at the advertising agency pd3, said: "Over the past 10 years iTunes has drastically changed the way we share, purchase and consume music. It has given us unrestricted and portable access to music's extensive back catalogue and taught the masses the art of a perfect playlist. iTunes have pioneered a listening revolution." Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, said the company took "great pride" in exposing music fans to new and emerging artists. He said: "When Apple introduced the iTunes Store on April 28, 2003, we thought if consumers had a great, legal way to download music they would embrace it - did they ever. "Apple was floored, as were the labels, when customers bought over one million songs during the first week. And now, 10 years later, we continue to be amazed by how much customers love the iTunes Store with more than 25 billion songs sold." The iTunes store is now available in 119 countries around the world. Besides its vast collection of music tracks, it holds more than 190,000 episodes of television programmes and more than 45,000 films.

Two-year-olds 'using the internet'
C
hildren aged two or younger are being allowed to use the internet, while many youngsters are spending much longer online than their parents realise, a new poll suggests. The survey reveals that almost four in five children (79.8%) have seen images or information about eating disorders and self harm
on the internet, and more than two in five (42.1%) admit that they have seen online porn. Others have seen content on suicide, child abuse, animal cruelty, gambling, terrorism or cults. In many cases, children accidentally accessed this inappropriate content, but al-
most one in 10 (9.4%) revealed they found it on purpose because they were looking for it, while a further 18.1% found it by following links they were curious about. The Netmums survey questioned around 1,100 parents and about 825 children aged seven to 16 for their views on the internet. The findings show that three quarters (72.8%) of parents believe that their child spends under an hour a day online. But an analysis of the children's poll suggested that on average, youngsters are spending two hours each day on the internet, Netmums claimed. Around one in eight (12.8%) of the parents surveyed said that their son or daughter was two years old or younger when they were first allowed to go online, while 16.7% said that they let them use the internet at age three. The survey also found that almost three in 10 parents (29%) let their youngster use the internet without any restrictions or supervision. More than three quarters (77.1%) of the children questioned said that they had not acted on information they had found on an inappropriate site. But 17.3% said it made them think about acting on it, while 5.4% said they tried to restrict their eating, 3.4% self-harmed and 2.1% considered suicide.
Shoppers to try on items virtually A "magic mirror" is set to revolutionise online shopping by allowing consumers to try on clothes virtually using a personal avatar, developers have said. Engineers have created a prototype which enables users to form computer-generated representations of themselves to gain an impression of how items would look when worn. Shoppers could then browse websites with the model to find garments that fit correctly or complement their skin tone. Developers believe the technology could benefit both customers and retailers by reducing the number of returns on clothes bought online. The prototype works with a camera which enables the avatar to mimic a shopper's movements when standing in front of a computer screen. This allows the consumer to examine an item from all sides and decide if it fits correctly. Developers hope the concept - dubbed the Magic Mirror - will eradicate problems associated with sizing which can differ significantly from one brand to another. The prototype avatars - from technology firm Intel - are created by inputting a series of measurements and would allow users to adjust hair colour and skin tone. Engineers
envisage shoppers taking their models from shop to shop as they browse the internet. An Intel spokesman said: "This is likely to save money for both consumers and retailers. It should mean fewer products are shipped to customers and then returned. Retailers will be able to manage their inventory better while it could save on trips to the post office when items don't fit." Developers were unable to give any idea
when the avatar would be brought out. The prototype was unveiled at the Intel Future Showcase event in central London. Other innovations on show included a 3D Face Log-on system which allows a user to fire up a computer using their face as the password. Developers believe this is the first time the concept - which already exists in 2D - has been trialled in the more secure 3D form.

Peugeot's iconic GTi is back
but can it live upto the legend?
T
antalised by idea that this little hot hatch will bring us back to the heady days of the 205 GTi, the latest offering promises "the perfect blend of performance and style." On paper that promise looks like becoming a reality with a 0-100kph in less than seven seconds and a top speed of 230kph. The 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine generates an eye-watering 200bhp and will go head-to-head with the Ford Fiesta ST, the Clio Renaultsport 200 and the Citroen DS3 Racing. You see, the ethos of ‘less is more’ seems to be the order of the day as the overall aggression of the 207 is completely toned down. In fact, so diluted is the savagery of what lies beneath, only a keen eye will spot the tell-tale signs. In-your-face styling with go-faster stripes and garish colours are replaced by subtle indications of its DNA and raw power.

Flared wheel arches, full body kit, unique chequered flag grille and 17 inch alloys hints at its real identity. A quick walk around the back and the roof spoiler, sports exhaust and red brake calipers confirm your suspicions. Thankfully the designers have run riot inside with an interior fit for any true petrol head. It's a veritable mix of red, black and chrome making this cheeky chap stand out from the bread and butter models. The freakishly small steering wheel sports a prominent GTI logo which sits along the soft leather, flat bottomed wheel. Standard specification on the new Peugeot 208 GTi includes 17" alloys, red brake calipers, twin chrome exhaust and body coloured rear spoiler, sports seats with black half leather, rear parking aid and armrest. Available to order in Ireland from next month, the new Peugeot 208 GTi 3-door 1.6 THP 200bhp model will retail from €27,995 plus dealer delivery related charges.

Meet the station wagon that’s faster than a Ferrari!
I
t hits 0-100kph in 3.9 seconds, has an electronically governed top speed of 305kph and has enough space in the rear to carry a fridge freezer! Ladies and gentlemen ... I give you the blisteringly brilliant Audi RS6 Avant - the quickest station wagon in the world. She sits on 20inch forged aluminium alloys although the test cars were all dressed in class-leading 21 inch super sexy wheels which complimented the flared arch. Piano black. 19 inch brake callipers embossed with the RS logo add to the sportiness. The louder she growls the more you whoop and holler. Inside it's the perfect mix of luxury meets sport with wall- to-wall leather coupled with the latest techno gadgetry known to man. MMI navigation is a given here as is cruise control, park assist package and Ardnaree, Ballina. 096-70523 Morgan
state-of-the -art Bose sound system. Driver information comes with its own RS menu courtesy of a 7-inch colour display detailing high performance aids like (turbo) boost pressure, lap timer and five-light gearshift indicator while the gearbox is engaged in tiptronic mode. Now, the true measure of a fast machine is not the 0-100 kph time it's the 100-200 kpm and beyond, how it handles and more importantly how it stops. Drop the hammer and this two tonne of fun will catapult you to 0- 100kph in under 4 seconds. The roar of the twin turbo tingling every nerve ending as she tips 200 in a slightly longer beat. The adrenaline is pumping as quick as the injectors under the hood as it hurtles up the autobahn heading for the Holy Grail of 305kph. Wow... 260... 270... 280 .. 285 then disaster struck.
MK Tyres
No, not a speed wobble, not a blowout or even a pesky traffic cop (we’re on an autobahn) - the dream has been scuppered by a pensioner in a - Smartcar! Thankfully the 20 inch ceramic brakes don’t do drama and as quick as the RS6 hit warp factor 5 she was back in double figures without any real fuss. It’s back to business and as the revs drop and the madness eventually calms down the electronic message flashes up on the dash that four of the eight cylinders have shut down to conserve fuel. Now that’s cool. The Audi RS6 will cost between €140-145,000. The Ceramic brakes mention above are an option extra costing around €17k. Other options include Dynamic Plus Package (unrestricts the speed from 250kph), Sports Suspension Plus with Dynamic Ride Control which adds electronically tweaking of individual shocks.

IVE of us sat into this, on a broad pathway, near Dublin Castle. Why? So we could test Citroen's contention that its new three-door DS3 Cabrio could take five adults. I can tell you it can, but I'm not sure I'd want to head to Maam Cross on a wet Thursday night as one of the backseat passengers. Of course this wasn't built for wet Thursdays. It was built for any day it doesn't rain. The little cabrio, with its folding fabric roof and fetching design, tried hard to cheer us up on a chilly, slightly depressing Monday. Starting at €21,195 ex-works it does invoke a certain mindset from a potential buyer (I think women will love it) which is why they are not expecting mega sales. But it is a sort of signal of what the French maker is about as it continues to distance itself in practice and by example from the appalling vista of a few years back. This cabrio is all about styling – you can customise the roof, body and wheels – and that electric roof (16 seconds up or down) that can be manoeuvred even at 120kmh. I wouldn't have put practicality at the top of its attributes but Citroen say it has the largest boot in its category and its
James Foy Auto Service
engines are so clean they start at 99g/km (€180 road tax). Oh yes! and it is, they claim, "the only real five-seater in the category". Which is why five of us ended up putting the claim to the test. Obviously based on the C3 family hatchback (recently revised and here in the summer), it is 3.95m long, 1.71m wide, 1.46m tall and just 25kg heavier. There are three engines and spec levels. Ex-works prices and models include: DSIGN VTI 82 petrol at €21,195, DSTYLE eHDI diesel at €25,045 and the DSPORT THP 155 petrol (€26,545). Standard equipment includes cruise control with speed limiter, rear parking sensors, sports suspension and 3D LED rear lights. Next spec level adds air-con, interior mood lighting, daytime-running LEDs and 16ins special alloys. And the top-of-range spec adds digital airconditioning, 17ins alloys and double chrome exhaust pipe. We didn't get to drive it but they insist the cabin is as quiet as the family hatch when the roof and windows are closed. I hope both are open more often than shut. We could do with a bit more of a cabrio climate – economically too.

Mouth Ulcers For most people, mouth ulcers are a minor problem that needs minimal treatment. For some, the pain of ulcers can be very severe and difficult to control. Mouth ulcers are usually caused by damage from food, teeth or dentures, or are sometimes due to infections. Most will heal within a week or two but ill-fitting dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. After removing the cause these ulcers are best treated with an antiseptic mouthwash such as chlorhexidine (Corsodyl). Treatment The treatment of mouth ulcers depends on their type and cause. Many over-the-counter preparations sold for treating mouth ulcers
may irritate the lining of the mouth. They may reduce the pain of the ulcer but may make it last longer. Chlorhexidine mouthwash is safe and fairly effective. It is used for one minute, twice daily. It is important to brush your teeth before using chlorhexidine, as it will stain the plaque on teeth. It is advisable to use chlorhexidine at least half an hour after using toothpaste since the foaming agents in most toothpastes stop chlorhexidine from working. It is also important not to swallow the mouthwash after rinsing. For best results, avoiding rinsing the mouth, or drinking, for 10 minutes after using chlorhexidine. Mouth ulcers may take up to two weeks to fully disappear. The most painful phase usually ends after three or four days. They will usually just go away on
Abscess An abscess is a collection of pus (infected fluid) surrounded by a thick wall. Abscesses can occur in almost any part of the body. ‘Boils’ are abscesses in the skin. Soft tissue abscesses occur in the tissue just beneath the skin. Abscesses can also occur in the abdomen, liver, brain, anus, rectum, kidney, lung, tonsils, ovaries, heart, pharynx, spleen, vagina and mouth. Occasionally, infection may spread from an abscess to surrounding tissues. A tooth abscess is usually a result of dental decay. As the bacteria multiply in the skin or soft tissues, the body responds by forming a wall around the area to keep the bacteria from spreading. The bacteria in this pocket (abscess) continue to multiply, the middle of the abscess turns to liquid and the area becomes more swollen and painful. Symptoms include swelling, redness, tenderness, fever and shivers. A tooth abscess usually causes severe toothache. This may be a sharp or throbbing pain that gets worse on chewing. There may also be a bitter taste in the mouth and bad breath. Abscesses in other parts of the body such as the liver or brain are less obvious because they are not visible. However, there may be pain in the affected area, accompanied by fever, sweats, chills and general aches and pains. Abscesses in the brain or spinal cord can cause drowsiness or confusion and require urgent medical attention. What is the treatment for an abscess? Antibiotics do not work because they cannot penetrate the abscess wall. However, they may sometimes be used if the infection has spread. An abscess is treated by a surgical procedure called Incision and Drainage. This is a minor surgical operation where the abscess is cut open and the pus allowed to drain out. For abscesses in other areas such as the liver, lung or brain, complicated surgical drainage procedures may be necessary. Prevention: Washing your skin at least once a day with water and soap. Taking care when shaving to avoid nicking your skin and Cleaning any wounds.
