S the government licks its wounds following an embarrassing result in the weekend’s Seanad Referendum, the voting patterns throughout the country show a glaring disparity in opinions between east and west and the significance of the large Dublin voting bloc. The result, which was much closer than expected and went against what all the earlier opinion polls had indicated, revealed that 12 out of 12 Dublin constituencies voted to retain the Second Chamber. The proposal to amend the Constitution was defeated by an overall margin of just 42,500 votes, with the largest No vote coming in the Dublin South East Constituency at 61.33 per cent. Dublin North Central also had the highest voter turnout in the country at 48.23 per cent. By contrast, the biggest Yes vote was recorded in the Taoiseach’s home county of Mayo with 57.46 per cent of voters in favour of scrapping the Seanad. In Sligo-North Leitrim the Yes vote was 50.76 per cent, while in Roscommon - South Leitrim the Yes side recorded 51.67 per cent. Galway East recorded a Yes margin of 51.37 per cent with Galway West the only western constituency with a narrow No margin at 50.88 per cent. Cavan-Monaghan recorded a Yes Vote of 54.87 and Clare voted for abolition with a Yes Vote of 51.33 per cent. Further north-west in Donegal the No vote won by a slender majority, 51.69 and 50.42 per cent. While the result is sure to raise many questions, particularly in Fine Gael, as to how the campaign to abolish the Seanad was run, if the margin was closer it would have raised even further questions as there was approximately 14,500 spoilt votes. There is also strong evidence to suggest some people didn’t quite know what they were voting for and what a Yes or No represented. In Wexford, where the winning margin for the No side was just 69 votes, there was 579 spoilt votes. While many voters from rural Ireland who shared the view that the Seanad was unnecessary, too costly, undemocratic and unrepresentative, will be shocked and frustrated with the result, they will be less concerned with the urban-rural issue that with the decision of the government to run the Referendum at this time, with inadequate preparation and during a period when they are enduring a general public backlash on other issues.

MAYO Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has called on Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, to say when the report on the plan of action for the future development of Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) will be published. Addressing Minister Varadkar in the Dail on Tuesday evening, Deputy Mulherin said the report, which the Minister had signed up to with the Board of Directors of IWAK, was supposed to have been ready by June last and she would have expected it to be forthcoming by the time of the budget which is just a fortnight away. Deputy Mulherin expressed concern that the legislation to give legal effect to the government's plan for the merger of Shannon Airport Authority with Shannon Development designed to secure a sustainable future for Shannon airport will be coming before the Dail shortly, but we still have no plan to secure Knock's future. She also stressed that the plans

relating to both Knock and Shannon should really proceed in tandem as Knock will be at a real competitive disadvantage once the new company Shannon Group plc is forged. "I also sought an assurance from the Minister that the recommendations of the report will be implemented in full. “IWAK is a transport hub and the gateway to the West and strategic to our future economic and social growth for the region. It has to be supported, “Deputy Mulherin said.

Sligo hotelier plans expansion after strong sales
D
alata, the hotel group founded in 2007 by Sligo man and former Jurys Doyle chief executive Pat McCann, saw its revenues climb last year by 55 per cent to €54.1 million, according to accounts details released last week. It added five new properties in 2012. In Sligo, the group controls the Clarion Hotel in Sligo Town and the Diamond Coast Hotel in Enniscrone. Dalata’s operating profit more than doubled to €3.2 million but it still made a loss of €2 million after charging interest and tax. About €4.1 million of the interest charges, however, were paid out on loan notes held by the company’s shareholders, including McCann. Dalata owns the 12-strong Maldron chain of three and four-star hotels, which includes one property in Cardiff. It also operates a further 22 unbranded hotels in Ireland under management contracts, mostly on behalf of banks and receivers. It is backed by TVC Holdings and private clients of Davy stockbrokers.
“Trading conditions in the sector improved in 2012 with increased demand growth in Dublin. As the year progressed there was evidence of stabilization in the rest of the country,” Dalata’s directors said, before adding it is continuing to look for expansion opportunities. The five-star segment of the market is leading a rebound of hotels in the capital, according to a recent study by Crowe Horwath consultants, which also found that Dublin properties had occupancy of 74 per cent last year while rates at luxury hotels climbed 10 per cent. The Dalata directors continued: “The outlook for 2013 is positive with further growth expected in earnings, driven by gathering and conferences and events, particularly in Dublin.” The capital’s conference market is expected to receive a 15 per cent boost next year following the launch of Google’s Foundry research centre, which will bring an extra 15,000 overseas delegates to the city each year. Dalata highlighted the special 9 per cent
VAT rate for tourism related services, and said it has boosted its trade. “The rate has ensured the group remains competitive in a difficult marketplace and has increased employment,” it said. Michael Noonan, the Minister for Finance, has hinted he is likely to increase the rate in next month’s budget, however, as it was only ever a “temporary measure” that costs taxpayers €360 million annually. Dalata is examining further expansion opportunities in the UK, and is believed to have held talks with institutions about obtaining finance for any expansion. The group has bank debts of just €8 million, but owes its shareholders about €31.5 million in loan notes, which pay out interest of 9 per cent each year. The accounts state, however, that the loan notes must only be paid back if Dalata is sold, lists on the stock exchange, or sells some of its assets. The shareholders have shared almost €19 million in interest payments since 2007. Ballymote native McCann invested €1 million of his own cash in the notes, according to the accounts.
O’Dowd to narrate kids TV programme Boyle actor and writer Chris O’Dowd is set to narrate a new kids TV programme Puffin rock. The co-producers of Puffin Rock, Cartoon Saloon, global publisher Penguin, and Derry’s media company, Dog Ears are delighted to announce that the series will be broadcast by Nick Jr in the UK and RTÉjr in Ireland. Production begins this month and delivery will begin in October 2014. The multi-platform brand follows the adventures of a family of puffins living on a wild and beautiful Irish island. Penguin will produce products to accompany it. O’Dowd will mix observations with interesting facts about the wildlife. He said “I love the whole idea behind Puffin Rock and the style of the artwork...I do love anything with Puffins.”
Minister Ring Hopes 9% VAT rate for Hospitality Industry will remain
Chris O'Dowd with Carrigallen's David Rawle
The Junior Tourism Minister is hopeful that the 9% VAT rate for the hospitality industry will not be raised to 13.5% in next month’s Budget. Earlier this week, Finance Minister Michael Noonan suggested the VAT rate may return to 13.5%, which has prompted hoteliers and restaurant owners to remind the Government how successful the lower VAT has been over the past two years. Minister Noonan now says a decision on this will not be confirmed until Budget Day, and Mayo-based Minister Michael Ring told Midwest News today that he will continue to campaign for the 9% to be retained. Minister Ring has also welcomed the latest CSO figures, which show a 6.5% increase in the number of overseas visitors to Ireland for the first 8 months of this year.
Roscommon MABS referrals double since 2007
T
he number of people in County Roscommon seeking advice on managing their money and debts has more than doubled since 2007 when the recession began to bite. New figures furnished by Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton showed that the county had seen a higher rate of increase in the number of people seeking assistance from the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS). MABS, which is available through Citizens Information Boards around the country, assists people who are over-indebted and need help and advice in coping with debt problems. Figures furnished by Minister Burton recently showed that nationally there was a 70 per cent increase in the number of people going to MABS for help over the past five years. In 2007 more than 15,000 people attended MABS services throughout the country and last year this number increased to over 26,000. In County Roscommon the number of people availing of MABS more than doubled over the same period. In 2007 as the recession began to bite just over 110 people availed of the local service. This figure, however, has more than doubled since then with 256 people availing of MABS last year and an even higher number in 2011 at 268. The latest available figures for this year also suggested little improvement in the economic circumstances of many, with 120 referrals to MABS in Roscommon in the first six months of the year. The service in Roscommon is provided by three staff and can be contacted by calling 0761 07 2720. The service, which is located on Abbey Street, Roscommon town, is available Monday – Friday, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm. For more information log onto www.mabs.ie.
Sligo Hospital revamp! MINOR upgrading work commenced in the Emergency Department at Sligo Regional Hospital on Monday 30 September. Commenting on the planned works, Grainne McCann, General Manager said, “The upgrading works will involve creating a dedicated treatment and waiting area for children, an improved minor injuries area and an additional reception area. The works are due to be completed in December. “Patients attending the Emergency Department may be inconvenienced during the works which may on occasion cause minor delays. We would like to apologise in advance for any disruption that the works may cause; the Emergency Department is a very busy Department and some inconvenience is to be expected in order to facilitate these improvements. “The hospital would like to thank the public for their co-operation during this time.”

Put your best foot forward at the Foxford Walking Festival
W
alkers from all over Mayo and beyond are set to descend on the town of Foxford on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October for the Foxford Walking Festival. Now in its third year, the festival has gained a reputation for providing excellent walks for every standard of walker from easy strolls on level ground right up to climbing mighty Nephin itself. Unlike many other festivals, young people are welcome to participate, although under 16s must be in the company of an adult. "Even Mums and Dads with buggies will find a nice flat walk along the River Moy to enjoy", smiles Jerome Coleman of organisers, Foxford Ramblers Walking Club, "Our walks are at three different levels: easy 90 minute walks on the flat for beginners and older or younger walkers, moderate 2 ½ or 3 hour
walks for more active walkers, and a tough 5 hour mountain hike each day for the experienced walker". Often families split, with one parent and smaller children doing an easy walk while the older children try a more ambitious level with the other parent. County Manager Peter Hynes has pledged his support to Foxford Walking Festival, and plans to take part in a couple of walks himself over the weekend. "We want Foxford to be the walking capital of Ireland" was his ambitious call at the festival launch. Mr Hynes also joined with the organisers in thanking the local landowners for their cooperation and generosity in helping the festival go ahead. Every walk is led by experienced guides who act as tour guides as well, pointing out interesting features and drawing attention to
the truly magnificent scenery. Orange-clad marshals also join each walk to ensure the safety of all participants. Festival goers can either go to Foxford for the entire weekend or just take part in the walk of their choice. Foxford has a good choice of hotel or B&B accommodation and staying over means enjoying the festival atmosphere to the full without having to drive home. Walks are priced very attractively starting at just €10 for an easy walk and rising to €20 for the difficult walks. The price of the tougher walks includes the coach transfer to and from Foxford, and there is a discount for anyone who does two walks. The assembly point and registration for all walks is the Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre. Full details are available on the website www.foxfordwalkingfestival.com.
Hopes in young blood as Mayo licks wounds WHILE County Mayo is cursing their All-Ireland final day bad luck again, it was not all doom and gloom in the Citywest Hotel last week-end as Mayo’s triumphant minor team did their best to lift the gloom and remind the audience there was an important piece of silverware present, the Tom Markham Cup. It may not have been the big one they had all being waiting so long to get our hands on, but theCup in question has a history all of its own and Stephen Coen, Mayo minor captain, was a proud man as he led his team-mates into a room packed with some 1700 guests. Twenty-eight years is a long time for a footballing mad county like Mayo to go without winning a minor title and there is no doubt that the victory over Tyrone gave everyone a chance to celebrate, a chance that so obviously wasn’t there at previous banquets in the aftermath of the recent senior defeats in 2004, 2006 and 2012. Most of the players looked uneasy, accepting handshakes and pats on the back, and as Andy
Moran explained, their main concern was that they did not want to take away from the marvellous victory of their younger counterparts. All of the speakers, Paddy McNicholas, Mayo County Board Chairman; Frank Burke, President of the Connacht Council and senior manager, James Horan, re-emphasised the great achievement of the minor team but Horan was also keen to impress on the U-18’s that this could just be the start of a great footballing journey for them during their playing careers. Both captain Stephen Coen and manager Enda Gilvarry spoke eloquently about what the victory actually means to them, with Coen stating the victory would mean he and his 30 or so teammates would now be ‘friends for life’. This prior planning had been done in the hope that Sam Maguire would be hosting a party to remember. Sam had an able deputy in the shape of Tom Markham, but the majority of conversations were really about how Sam ended up in the Gibson Hotel with the Dublin team and

not in Citywest. At the end of the day Mayo ended up marginally second best for the second year in a row at senior level, but the minors are top dogs for 2013 - and that in itself is something to celebrate.

New €1.8m unit at Mayo General cannot be opened
T
HE HSE finds itself in the wars in recent weeks over a renal dialysis unit at Mayo General Hospital which is lying idle despite a sum of €1.8 million being invested in extending the over-stretched facility.Work has been completed under the HSE’s 2012 capital programme at the Castlebar site in upgrading the unit, but it cannot reopen to patients until a specialised filter system is installed. Patients are currently being treated in temporary accommodation at the former St. Mary’s Hospital where there are 10 beds in place. The new facilities had been due to be commissioned in June before a lack of funding to erect the filter system forced a postponement. There had been 54 patients on renal dialysis in Mayo General Hospital before the extended unit was built, with others waiting to use the service. At present, the overflow is catered for in Galway, which means that some patients have to undertake a several hour round trip to avail of essential medical intervention up to three times every week. An independent member of Castlebar Town Council, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, said it was incredible the HSE had spent €1.8 million on a facility and could not find a relatively small sum in comparison for the filter system. “The longer this situation prevails, the greater agony patients from this county must suffer in travelling to Galway for dialysis. It’s imperative this issue is resolved as a matter of urgency,” he argued. Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Blackie Gavin concurred with Councillor Kilcoyne. “It is totally unacceptable that this is happening,” he added.
Naughten seeks €7m gas windfall for Carrick Local TD Denis Naughten has called for part of the cash generated from the sale of Bord Gais to be ringfenced to extend the gas network to towns such as Carrick-on-Shannon. This would reduce the energy cost to local businesses in the County Town by €7m each year he has claimed. Speaking in the Dáil recently, Deputy Naughten said: “This is a golden opportunity for government to support existing businesses and create new jobs locally. We must ensure that some of the money from the sale of the company is ploughed back into job creation in this region.” Deputy Naughten said that based on a report by the Western Development Commission (WDC) the town with the most to gain is Carrick-on-Shannon, which would benefit by over €7m/year if it were to get access to the gas network when compared with the cost of existing energy supplies such as oil based fuels and electricity. “Such savings for local business would not only protect existing jobs but also make these towns attractive to future investment by Irish or international companies,” said Denis Naughten.

Wynne Family gathering at Hazelwood
A
successful Gathering weekend was enjoyed September 6th – 8th by descendants of the Hazelwood Wynnes from far and wide, hosted by the Hazelwood Heritage Society (HHS) as part of Ireland’s national tourism initiative to bring the Diaspora back ‘home.’ The event started with an evening launch and a warm welcome by both Mayor Councillor Marcella McGarry and Cathaoirleach Councillor Pat McGrath. Graham Wynne of Calgary, Canada, thanked the HHS for organising the w.end ?and the group was also treated to a photo montage complied by Aidan Mannion and Gerry Foley. Guests poured over extensive family trees and chatted throughout the evening. Beatrice Macdonald, HHS chair, in her speech reminded the audience that “almost three hundred years ago Lt Gen Owen Wynne II, when he built his house at Hazelwood, made a huge statement to the people of Sligo and beyond to the effect that The Wynnes had arrived in Sligo and were an important family and a force to be reckoned with. In a similar
way the Hazelwood Heritage Society were sending out the message that they are intent on protecting the House and overseeing its eventual renovation. With careful planning this renovation programme would provide huge employment for the area, and a welcome boost to the local economy.” The next day the family was treated to a tour of parts of Hazelwood House by architectural conservation expert Wendy Lyons. Wendy told those present that Hazelwood House, built by the Wynnes to the design of Richard Cassells in 1727, was the first Palladian villa built by him in Ireland, and was used as a model for all subsequent houses later, i.e. Castletown and Powerscourt etc. “The architectural importance of this house cannot be over stressed, and it is vital that this great house is not allowed to deteriorate any further”. “The Irish Georgian Society are monitoring the situation closely”, said Wendy. Lunch followed in the ‘Morning Room,’ bringing the house to life again. A cruise on Lough Gill on the Rose of Innisfree
then dinner at the Model rounded out the big day. The weekend series of events was then brought to a close with an outing to Lurganboy, the original family seat, where the group was treated to its historical background and generous hospitality at Lurganboy church, finishing with a drive through lovely Leitrim, including spectacular rain-swollen ‘wandering water gushing, from the hills above Glencar.’ Participants exchanged contact information, with many planning to return to Sligo, bringing cousins unable to attend the first time! Many thanks to all of those who assisted in making this Gathering a great success: County Sligo Heritage Office, Mark MacSharry & Jackie McMahon, Sligo Leader Partnership’s TÚS scheme, Sligo Field Club, and other volunteers. For those who would like to assist in Hazelwood Heritage Society’s campaign to save Hazelwood House, please contact Kate Bell at nature.learn1@gmail.com or 085 107 4078, or 071 919 7926, Find us on Facebook (HazelwoodHeritageSociety) and at hazelwoodheritagesociety.ie.
Tuam Conference on what it means to be a Catholic today Pope Francis has admitted that the church has been ‘small-minded’ on certain matters while also saying that church teaching has been ‘clear’ on issues. In his first extensive interview the Pope said that it is time to find a ‘new balance.’ * Is it a case of ‘too little too late’ for many Irish Catholics? How relevant is faith today? Has it any meaning? Some of the issues facing believers will be explored at ‘The Challenges of Faith – Reflections on Being a Catholic Today’ in the Ard Rí Hotel in Tuam on Saturday, October 12th between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Submissions from the floor will be encouraged. Midwest Radio presenter Monica Morley and Fr Pat Donnellan, the parish priest in Islandeady, Castlebar, will speak about their experiences of church, belief, difficulties and hopes for the future. Service, compassion, reaching out, rights and responsibilities are issues that will be explored by Monica Morley while Fr Pat will highlight the positive contributions of people working together in a parish. The pope said: “This church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a
small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal church to a nest protecting our mediocrity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds.... And you have to start from the ground up. “The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in smallminded rules. The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. And the ministers of the church must be ministers of mercy above all. The confessor, for example, is always in danger of being either too much of a rigorist or too lax. Neither is merciful, because neither of them really takes responsibility for the person. The rigorist washes his hands so that he leaves it to the commandment. The loose minister washes his hands by simply saying, ‘This is not a sin’ or something like that. In pastoral ministry we must accompany people, and we must heal.”

he ‘Get Export Ready’ Workshop held in Galway on 5 September attracted more than 50 attendees to hear about the Enterprise Ireland and Galway County & City Enterprise Board programme of supports aimed at getting more Irish companies exporting. The workshop was aimed at preexport and early-stage exporting companies, and existing businesses seeking to explore new opportunities in export markets. As part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs 2012, Enterprise Ireland’s Potential Exporters Division delivers a wide range of initiatives focussed on helping companies to export more. The ‘Get Export Ready’ programme includes practical measures for early-stage exporters including the importance of research, how to develop a value proposition, and the skills required for export selling. The programme helps prepare companies interested in targeting international markets to confront the challenges that any company faces as it prepares to export.
David Byrne, Manager – Potential Exporters Division at Enterprise Ireland said: “Exporting can be a valuable source of new business for companies with innovative products or services and the ambition and drive to focus on international markets. There are many companies operating successfully in the Irish market who are capable of growing their businesses through finding new customers overseas.” As part of the Workshop attendees had the opportunity to hear first-hand from companies who have successfully made the leap from selling locally to exporting to world markets. Michael Walsh, Marketing Director of Dubarry of Ireland spoke about their journey from traditional manufacturer selling in Ireland to gaining global recognition as a leading brand of high performance footwear, clothing and accessories. He stressed the importance of thoroughly understanding the needs of customers, their buying habits and practices and stressed that competitive advantage
should be based on more than just price. The passion that he feels for the Dubarry brand was evident and in the context of recommending that there was no substitute for getting out into export markets and putting in the hard yards he encouraged those attending to harness that passion in direct communication with their customers/prospects. Speaking at the Workshop he said ‘Nobody will be as passionate as you in representing your company and products’. Barry Egan, Director – West Region at Enterprise Ireland said: “Irish products and services are among the best in the world. This workshop was about casting the net wider and reaching out to the many West of Ireland companies that are mainly focussed on the domestic market to encourage them to consider exporting as a new route to expanding their businesses. The range of supports available from Enterprise Ireland and the Galway City and County Enterprise Board will help these companies tap into their export potential, ultimately helping to create more jobs here in Ireland.” As a follow on, Enterprise Ireland will hold a one-day ‘Exploring Exporting Workshop’ in Galway on Thursday 26 September. The workshop will assist pre-export companies to make sound business decisions as to whether they are ready to export, and will help them to understand how to plan for successful export entry. Mentor support will be available to participating companies to help them identify the issues and challenges they need to address to become export ready. Resources from Enterprise Ireland’s Market Research Centre will also be available. Further details are available at http://www.enterpriseireland.com/en/events/ourevents/exploringexporting/exploring-exporting-workshopgalway-26-sept-2013.html The dedicated website www.enterpriseireland.com/getexportready with ‘how to’ guides, links to relevant information, selfassessment tools and templates, outlines the new supports.

Spread over five action-packed episodes, the series follows Chairman of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ judging panel, Padraig Ó Céidigh, as he travels across the island of Ireland to meet the 24 leading Irish entrepreneurs competing for the title of EY
Entrepreneur Of The Year™. The first three episodes will focus in on the 8 finalists shortlisted per each of the competition’s 3 categories – Emerging, Industry & International respectively. As a finalist in the International Category, Galway-based James Murphy, CEO of Lifes2Good and one third of the Galway Tenors, will be profiled in Episode 3 of the series airing on Monday 14 October. “Over the past 6 months the 24 selected finalists have participated in a once in a lifetime peer-to-peer, business building experience. Now the entrepreneurs have the opportunity to share their stories with the nation” said Frank O’Keeffe, Partner-in-
Charge of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ programme. “We created this series to inspire Ireland, allowing the general public to go behind the scenes of our home-grown entrepreneurs’ businesses; share their successes and failures and witness, firsthand, what these 24 incredible individuals are doing for Ireland Inc.” Split between three categories – Emerging, Industry and International – the 24 finalists represent the full spectrum of Irish businesses, from the “ones-to-watch” to our trailblazing international market leaders. The series offers an all-access pass into the finalists’ journey through Ireland’s premier business awards programme, tracking their progress as they come face-to-face with Ireland’s entrepreneurial heavyweights for the final judging interviews. The penultimate episode follows the finalists to the USA as they join over 100 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Alumni™ on the high-octane CEO Retreat across Chicago, New York and University of Notre Dame. Mark Little and Miriam O’Callaghan, reunited for the first time since Little’s departure from Primetime, will take to the stage at the televised live awards, the final episode of the series, to co-present the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Awards Night. Held at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin on 24 October, the Awards will bring together over 1,300 of Ireland’s business elite to celebrate our island’s top entrepreneurs. A winner will be selected from each of the three categories and, from these three winners, an overall winner will be selected as EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ 2013. Pioneered by EY, the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ programme is run in association with Enterprise Ireland, InterTradeIreland, Invest Northern Ireland, RTE, Newstalk and The Irish Times.
Racing For the LauraLynn Children's Hospice CAR racing enthusiasts and drivers came together to support the LauraLynn Childrens Hospice at the Formula Vee Motor Racing festival recently. Sponsored by Dunlop Tyres Ireland they raised a much needed €15,000 which was presented to the hospice by Dunlop Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Steve Lynch. Steve Lynch, commented: “We are delighted to present this cheque to Ireland’s only children’s hospice. We would like to thank everyone who donated money throughout the weekend and contributed to such a worthy
cause. LauraLynn Children's Hospice is a very worthy cause and their continued efforts to support children and their families during very difficult and trying times is unparalleled and very deserving.” The LauraLynn Childrens Hospice assists families with children that are suffering with life limiting conditions. The charities' philosophy is not only to support the children in their care but to provide respite for all the family from the parents who need a much needed break to healthy siblings that can often get lost in the circumstances of the illness.
Jane McKenna, Founder of LauraLynn said: “Heartfelt thanks to all involved in the Dunlop Formula Vee Festival, for their fantastic support. Our service is a real lifeline and the funds raised will help support the children & their families who rely on our care, making the most of their short and precious time together." The festival was one of the best attended events on the Irish motor racing circuit this year and the supporters were treated to some spectacular racing from some of Ireland's top up and coming racing drivers. Hosted at the Mondello
international circuit the money was raised for the charity through income of gate receipts, programme sales and a gala charity auction. Steve continued, “It has been a difficult year for all charities and we at Dunlop were thrilled by the generosity of the racing fraternity on the day. Not only did they get to see some great competitive racing but they showed their willingness to help out this very worthy cause. All of us involved with the sport are very much appreciative of their continued support.”
Male Infertility – “as important as global warming” Whilst Gordon Ramsay and other celebrities speak out most men remain silent. Leading Irish fertility clinic, ReproMed warns that male infertility continues to be a growing problem. A study from the European Science Foundation (ESF) has revealed a rapid increase in male infertility over the past few decades. Whilst 1 in 6 people in Ireland are affected by infertility, and traditionally it was believed that 90% of infertility issues lay with women, contemporary statistics reveal that in fact, 40% of infertility issues lie with women, 40% with men, 10% with both and 10% unexplained. Declan Keane, Senior Embryologist and Director of ReproMed Clinics says “we are seeing more and more Irish males coming to our clinics. Advances in technology have allowed us to offer greater insight into male fertility issues and we see men of all ages attending here to avail of our services. It’s important that couples seek advice to ensure that unnecessary tests are not carried out on women purely because satisfactory interest is not being taken in male issues.’’ Keane continues ’’Many males attending our ReproMed clinics have expressed feelings of failure at not being able to provide healthy sperm to their partner to conceive their child naturally. This feeling of a loss of “masculinity”, while unwarranted, can lead to stress and strain on the relationship and in some cases depression.“ Gordon Ramsay talks about his infertility and his low sperm count. Hugh Jackman, Dennis Quaid and Robert De Niro are also vocal about their experiences of infertility. Keane believes that the stigma attached to infertility is preventing men talking about this hidden problem. Neils Skakkebaek, a professor at the University of Copenhagen and co-author of the report says: ‘’The important impact of men’s reproductive health on a couple’s fertility is often overlooked’’. The ESF study uncovered that 1 in 5 males aged 18-25 are affected by sub fertility – low semen quality and quantity. This can be caused by issues they are born with, such as undescended testes which later can be linked to testicular cancer in young males. Infertility can lead to stress; strain on relationships; and particularly in men, a feeling of failure. In the sub fertile general population, the majority of couples will eventually successfully become pregnant within a year with little or no intervention. This can come about through changes in lifestyle, diet and more often than not, a consultation with a fertility expert, which can help a couple to relax, leading to natural conception. Fertility issues in men come in different forms: • 15% of males are affected by a varicocele – an enlarged vein located in the scrotum which, if temperatures rise, can decrease the quantity and quality of sperm • Undescended testicles is a common defect that males can be born with and can lead to fertility issues in the future • Orchitis – inflammation in the testicles/genital tract is also a common cause of male infertility • Unhealthy diet and lifestyle can also damage or interrupt sperm production

50-year-old father-of-three ordered to show ID to buy alcohol A 50-year-old forklift driver was left bemused after checkout staff asked him to prove that he was over 18. Father-of-three Charles Brown, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, had gone into his local Morrisons to buy a bottle of rum. The youthful-looking dad had to contend with a member of staff on the tills as well as a manager due to not having any proof of age on his person. Mr Brown, who turned 50 in July, managed to buy his booze in the end after convincing staff, at the supermarket branch in Elland, that he really was the age he said he was. Many supermarkets and off licences use a ‘Challenge 25’ rule which means that staff have to ask for age ID from anyone that looks under 25. While fed up with the constant IDing, Mr Brown said that he does, still, take it positively: ‘I take it as a compliment but it’s getting a bit frustrating. I think they need to retrain their staff. ‘I know I don’t look my age but there’s no way I’m 24,’ he added. Morrisons reiterated its adoption of the Challenge 25 policy and said that it takes its responsibility ‘very seriously.’
‘We hope Mr Brown took the request as a compliment as he must look very young for his age,’ a spokesman said.
Lisdoonvarna dismay at lack of men at history matchmaking festival Organizers of the Lisdoonvarna matchmaking festival are facing an unusual problem — a shortage of eligible bachelors. Chiefs of the six-week love fest admitted they’ve received complaints from single women, including many who’ve flown in from the U.S. looking for romance, that there are too few Irish men at this year’s event. And they fear the number of single males in the Co. Clare spa town will drop to its lowest level for years this weekend, when thousands of locals head to Croke Park to cheer on the county’s hurling stars in the AllIreland final. Local matchmaker Willie Daly said, “The festival has been very successful this year. It’s probably busier than it’s been for a good number of years, because of the good weather and the influence of The Gathering. “We’ve definitely noticed that numbers are up, partic-
ularly women. But we’ve a shortage of bachelors. A lot of American women have flown in and they’ve said there just aren’t enough Irish men to go around. “A lot of these women are dreaming of finding romance with an Irish fella, but they’re struggling to find one this year. “The problem’s only going to get worse this weekend when Clare play Cork in the All-Ireland. We’ll be losing a lot of lads from Clare who’ll be heading up to Dublin. And there’ll be fewer bachelors from Cork around too. “So if there are fellas out there who want to find a match, they’ll never have a better chance than this weekend, because the American women will be falling over them.” Daly, 71, a third-generation matchmaker, said that since the end of last year’s festival, he’s conjured up around 300 successful introductions.
Earlier this month the Lisdoonvarna love doctor welcomed “The Outing” to the festival for the first time - the town’s first-ever gay and lesbian matchmaking event. “I hope we see a few more fellas
down here between now and the end of the festival. We don’t want to see the girls go home disappointed,” said Daly. This year’s love fest runs until October 7.
‘Pregnant’ boy, 2, gives birth to his own parasitic twin DOCTORS in China were left stunned after discovering a two-year-old boy was carrying an undeveloped foetus inside his stomach. Xiao Feng had to undergo an operation to ‘give birth’ to his own parasitic twin after doctors in Huaxi discovered the foetus. The child was rushed to the operating room after arriving at hospital with a severely bloated stomach, according to The Inquisitr. Doctors say the foetus took up two thirds of Xiao’s stomach, resulting in
breathing difficulties for the child. The unborn foetus measured 20cm in width and had also formed a spine and limbs, as well as fingers and toes. Experts believe that the parasitic twin would have killed Xiao if it had been left untreated. Identical twins are formed when an egg splits in half after fertilisation, but conjoined twins are formed when it fails to fully separate. Conjoined twins can survive as ‘parasites’ but not when one is absorbed into the other twin.
WeBuyAnyCar.com ‘loves’ prankster’s fake company letter
A humourless letter purportedly from webuyanycar.com which ‘landed on the doorstep’ of a prankster has left the used car firm scratching its head after it was unveiled as a hoax. Jamie Jones created a fake letter which looked like it was from the company replying to his attempt at selling them a child’s plastic car. The ostensible corporate ‘reply’ did the rounds on Twitter on Saturday after it looked like the company was reprimanding Mr Jones for ‘wasting their time’. But Mr Jones later tweeted: ‘I’m being forced to admit that the letter was fake. We Buy Any Car will buy any car and whatever else they’re lawyers want me to say.’ Mr Jones’ photograph of the ‘letter’ has been retweeted over 28,000 times, including by Ant and Dec. ‘After reviewing your request that we value your ‘Little Tikes car’ and viewing the attached photo, we’ve come to the conclusion that you sent your request to simply waste our time,’ the hoax letter began. ‘The frequency in which you alluded to the toy as a vehicle and made reference to our name ‘We Buy Any Car’ makes it clear you knew this result was forthcoming. We have no interest in buying your item. ‘We’ve been kind enough to return your photo on the basis that you refrain from contacting us again,’ and was signed off by fictional employee Adam Jennings. The letter was also shared thousands of times on Facebook, with many people on social media believing the funny ‘reply’ to be real. The firm then took to Twitter to debunk the hoax, while also joking that ‘Adam Jennings’ had been sacked. A spokesperson for the company told Metro: ‘We loved the hoax letter thought up by Jamie AKA Adam Jennings. It gave us a giggle and the engagement on Twitter has been great fun. ‘At webuyanycar.com we really will buy any car. We do love the colour of the Little Tikes and it’s clearly in good condition – but toy cars are just not our area of speciality…. maybe Jamie should try eBay?!’

Choosing the Perfect Bridal Gown Northwest Express October, 2013
18
O
n your wedding day, you’re the star. Of course you want to look like it, all the while feeling comfortable in your own skin and of course your dress. Often brides spent more time choosing their wedding dress, than choosing the husband. While dress shopping can be very exciting, it can prove very difficult. Choosing a wedding dress that will impress is not a job you can do overnight, it takes hours of 'trying on' and browsing through magazines for ideas. A wedding gown is one that you will remember for the rest of your life, so make it be extra special. Not only has it to suit your figure and your skin tone, it also has to fit in with your personality. Before
you go out shopping, take some time to establish the look or looks that you like and ask the sales advisor for them styles, to save you a lot of time and effort, sorting through dress styles you simply won't wear. Sales advisors will appreciate that you know what you are looking for and will work hard to find the dress that meets those wants.
Dress shopping When you do decide to go dress shopping, make sure you wear the correct underwear, because you will be spending a lot of time showing it to random strangers. It is best to bring a shoe with a heel similar to the size of the heel you will be wearing on the day, so you
can gain an idea of how much to take off your dress. Beware of bringing your mother with you when trying on dresses, as most mothers tend to get emotional and shed a tear at each fitting, commenting; “that's the one”, “no that is the one”, “no wait, I think this one is perfect”. If she tends to do this on your first day shopping for a dress, consider bringing your future mother in law on the second, she at least will be completely honest with you. Even if you come away from a day at a bridal boutique, feeling like you have not accomplished anything or seen anything you like, fear not, you have at least seen what the store had to offer and will be able to eliminate
Photograph by Cathal Devlin certain styles. It will also give you an idea of what styles to head hunt for in the future. Be careful not to hastily buy a dress that is a fashion fad. After all you want a dress that is timeless and elegant, so when you look back on your photos in the years to come, you won't think 'what was I wearing?' When picking a dress, keep in mind the time of year. If you are having a Christmas wedding, make sure your dress is heavy and maybe purchase a shrug, so that you do not freeze, when it comes to posing for photographers. If it is a summer wedding, opt for a light material dress, so that you do not over heat! The biggest mistake that a bride to be can often make is ordering a size smaller than they actually are in the hope that they will fit into it by the time the wedding day comes. It often happens that a bride fails to ditch the weight in time and has to fork out a small fortune on letting the dress out. The same can happen if you lose weight. While you may be overjoyed that you have slimmed down, you may not be so happy when you see how much it will cost you to get the dress taken in. Slender and curvy Halter-neck tops expose beautiful shoulders and welltoned arms. The halter-neck top
echoes the lower half of the dress, so if you have slim hips the halter-neck will be an excellent counterpoint. A mermaid shape dress is ideal for curvy girls with balanced hip and bust measurements. It will bring out the Marilyn Monroe in you. If you want Hollywood glamour, this is undoubtedly it. Strapless dresses look fantastic on slim women with a medium bust. Strapless dresses can be very elegant if you have a long neck, good shoulders and well-toned arms. Big Busted Well endowed women ought not to go for strapless dresses, as it will only put all the attention on one area. I nstead, a large busted woman should look at off the shoulder dresses, which move the attention away from the chest and onto the shoulders. Corsets or bodices are great choice for big busts, as it hides the bad bits and highlights the good bits. If you have a slimhipped figure and a full bust, a ball gown will balance top and bottom perfectly, giving you that "fairy-tale bride" look. The good news is that a V-line dress can look fantastic on a well endowed woman. The V-Line style plunges to the bust and is complimentary to cleavage.
Northwest Express October, 2013
19 lengthens the body. Long sleeve dresses can look great on people with wider hips, as it draws attention to your upper body. Long sleeves will also conceal larger arms, and cover square shoulders, provided that they are loose rather than close fitting. Long sleeves will also save you from getting goose bumps if you have a winter wedding. Full figure If you have a full figure, an A-line dress will lengthen the whole body and move the focus away from the waistline. An 'Empire waist' dress is perfect for those who are concerned about their figure, as it is narrowest below the bust and conceal the hips and waistline. Colour If you are not a big fan of white,
Petite Your main goal with a square body shape is to find a dress that gives the illusion of curves. A fuller skirt and a lot of details at the bust area, with a V at the front or back, will create the illusion of a smaller waistline. The A-line dress will also give the illusion that you are taller than you really are. Avoid a sheath style dress as it will make you look shorter than you actually are. It is also advisable to avoid high necks or halter necks, which make shoulders appear narrow, and as a result do not flatter that
waistline. If you are small all over, avoid the ballerina/full skirt style of dress as it will make your bust look smaller than it actually is. Tall If you are tall, a sheath style dress or column dress will flatter your figure and frame. The Column dress hugs the figure and will give you the catwalk look. Avoid an empire line dress as it lengthens the body even more. Go for a dress with short sleeves, as it will break up the line and make your arms appear smaller than they are. A dipped neckline can be very
or just feel that you won't be able to pull it off, then consider going for ivory, cream, champagne or a dress with a tint. You also can look at coloured dresses, to take a less traditional approach to the wedding attire. The key thing to remember is to make sure you choose a shade that makes you stand out. In other words, avoid colors close to your skin tones. For example, if the tone of your skin is yellow, it is wise to avoid ivory wedding dresses. Ivory wedding dresses will make you fade away. Similarly, those with very fair skin should better not purchase a pure white wedding dress. It will drain the person's look and will not flatter their skin tones. People with darker skins find it easier to purchase a suitable wedding dress, since most of the white ones can flatter their skins.
complimentary to a taller woman with a small to medium sized bust. It will give a hint of cleavage but not enough to be described as 'booby' and is perfect for people who may be worried about showing too much. However it is good to remember that skin is sexy. This is your day to shine, so do not shy away. A dipped neckline dress can also be good for hiding fleshy under arms. Bottom heavy If you have concerns about your hips, perhaps a two piece would be a good option. An A-line skirt

Choosing the Wedding Cake Northwest Express October, 2013
20
W
hen it comes to planning a wedding, few decisions are as delightful as choosing your wedding cake. After all, what could be better than sampling slice after slice of delicious cake. The cake is one of the most prevalent symbols of your wedding. It will feature prominently in your wedding pictures and it will be a focal point for your guests when they arrive at the reception hall. Your cake can pull together your colours and wedding theme in one beautiful and delicious package. When it comes to choosing a wedding cake, you must first consider what it is you are looking for? Do you want a traditional ivory tiered cake? a modern chocolate and vanilla cake or fruit flavoured art piece? Whether you are utterly clueless to what you
want or have a good idea of the style of cake you want, next you must visit bakers to see what they can offer you. This task must be done in good time (approximately 4 months before the big day itself). You should visit two or three bakers and ask to see their portfolio. This will help you determine if you like the bakers style. In order to ascertain what size cake you will need, consider how many guests you will have in attendance. Remember, the bigger the cake, the more expensive it will be. One way of saving money is to order a smaller cake for display at the reception and two sheet cakes that can be cut and placed on plates in the kitchen and served to the guests. The sheet cake can be considerably plainer than the
cake on display. This saves a huge cost and still means you get to show off a cake! When considering the shape and size of the cake. Traditional round and square cakes are still very popular and easy to cut. Look through wedding magazines and bakers samples to find a wedding cake design that dazzles you! The cake's design should match the aesthetic of the day. A formal wedding generally calls for a structured, multi-layer cake. For a less formal wedding, you can embrace the unconventional cake. Multiple tiers allows you to offer several kinds of cake each level can be different, offering something for everyone. So if the bride is a fan of cheesecake, but the groom is a big fan of fruit cake, you can now have both in
Photograph by Cathal Devlin one cake. A common combination includes one tier - mouse filled cake, one tier fruit, one tier chocolate and vanilla cake, frosted with butter cream frosting or rolled fondant. Icing traditionally comes in either a simple sugar recipe or rich cream cheese variety and usually is white or ivory, but more contemporary approaches involve other colours. If you wearing ivory or champagne, let the baker know and they can tint the icing accordingly. Remember, anything goes from dark chocolate to pale pastels, with modern wedding cakes. They tend to be decorated to match the bride's lace pattern on her gown or even the bouquet. Some couples design the cake around the decor or theme of the wedding. Brides often go for lace, embroidery applique or elegant drapes. Common features include; ruffles, bows, swirls and ribbons formed from pastiage and blown sugar. Cakes can also be garnished with real ivy leaves, non-toxic flowers and chocolate towers and truffles. When it comes to wedding cake, your imagination is the only limit to the appearance of your special confection. While it is essential that the wedding cake appeals to your
visual senses, it is even more important that it taste's moist and delicious. Tasting is not only a fun task, but an essential one also. Do not just settle on a cake, because you cannot see anything like what you wanted. Shop around for the best offers and do not be afraid to ask the baker if they can work with your design and style, you might just be very surprised at how accommodating they can be. It is always wise to bring along cuttings of cakes you like and sketches of the style of cake you are looking for. Take samples of your dress, bouquet and bridesmaids colours to leave with the pastry chef. Ask the baker about additional costs, such as cake tops, pillars, columns and whether or not these items need to be returned to the store. Also ask about the delivery process. Will the cake be set up at the reception by the baker or will the caterer have to do this? Once you have decided on a cake and a baker, get a contract in writing. There is no point agreeing aspects orally, make sure you have a written record of what you have ordered and are fully aware that the baker knows what you are looking for, this will avoid any nasty surprises on the day.

Peace of mind for the bride and groom
W
eddings can be stressful enough for a bride and groom without the worst coming to the worst, so to give the happy couple a bit of peace of mind, that in the eventuality that anything goes wrong on their special day, that they will be free from sever financial outlays, opt for wedding insurance. Wedding cancellation insurance is one of those aspects of your wedding that can feel wrong. It can almost feel like you are making some sort of assumption that suggests you have concerns and worries about the success of your marriage, but it isn't. Moreover, it is common sense. Wedding insurance isn't a statement of uncertainty, it is your safety net. It ensures a worry free wedding, if something like severe weather postpones or drastically affects your wedding. Odds are you won't need it, but what would you do if something did go wrong? Would you like the stress and worry of having to fork out money for an event that never even happened? Like most insurance policies, wedding coverage is tailored to each insured's personal needs and wants. Policies generally provide rescheduling, replacement or reimbursement for things such as cancellations, stolen gifts, lost rings and protects you against the loss caused by the failure of many of the traditional elements of a wedding (wedding attire, photography, transport etc). When buying wedding insurance, its all about getting the right level of cover for your needs. If you are having a tight budget wedding, perhaps only go for limited cover, but if you are organizing a lavish spread, perhaps it would be wise to make sure you have comprehensive insurance. While prices vary from provider to provider, prices generally start at €89 for a basic insurance package up to €200 for all the extra's such as honeymoon trip cover and legal expenses cover. Remember the cost of a typical wedding with the full works can be colossal, so it is well worth investing in insurance for the event.

The Perfect Match
hen choosing wedding flowers, it is best to make appointments with more than one florist to view the arrangements they can offer you and compare them in terms of price, value and styles. Many churches will have a contract with a florist, so you need to be clear on this before you start booking. The wedding bouquet is an extremely important piece of the wedding
ceremony, as its a focal point. There are many types of bouquet shapes you can choose from, but the common three are; Cascade, Round and hand-tied bouquets. Cascading bouquets are great for slimming a bride's appearance, especially if a bride is worried about her hips. However, a round bouquet emphasize the body shape, so if the bride has a good figure, why not show if off! Smaller framed
individuals generally opt for round bouquets as it will give the appearance of elevated height. Slender brides often go for a hand tied bouquet, as it balances body shape. With style out of the way, next you will have to decide on the flowers themselves. While this is very exciting, for some brides, it can also be troublesome. 1 in 5 Irish people suffer from an allergy to pollen. Hay fever sufferers can find summer weddings a difficult experience, as there is so many flowers pollinating during the summer season. If a member of the wedding party suffer from hay fever, it is best to opt for either artificial flowers or for pollen free flowers such as Orchids, Calla Lilly or Roses. .Orchids petals appear to be very delicate but a re surprisingly robust and can withstand a lot of handling. Orchids are the picture of elegance and are great anytime of year. Tulips have long been another common option as they are pretty and elegant. Roses are the classic flowers for a bouquet and emanate radiance and grace. Calla Lilies are the latest trend and are a sophisticated choice. It has become a modern trend to mix white calla lilies with one black 'schwarzwalder' calla, as a striking vocal point. However, if hay fever is not a concern, your choice of flowers is endless. Why not opt for red Chrysantemum's which symbolise love or amaranths which are symbolic of fidelity. White and pink Lily flowers are a popular choice for summer weddings, while lilacs are often picked for spring weddings to bring a touch of violet to the bouquet. Brides often go for forget-me-not flowers as they are symbolic of true love and add a lovely touch of indigo to the bouquet, which in spring can look fantastic, mixed with white chrysanthums. If you are not a big lover of flowers, tulips are the best
choice as they can be kept simple, without too much frills or foliage. In terms of cost, the prices can vary from florist to florist, but a standard bouquet will set you back in the region of €100. Bridesmaids bouquets can tally up to a similar cost, so its best to go into the florists with a budget in mind. A word of warning, in season flowers will dramatically reduce your flower bill, compared to ordering flowers that are out of season. A trend that is emerging in modern weddings is to use silk flowers. The idea behind using silk flowers is that many brides like the idea of being able to keep the bouquet as a keepsake. Silk wedding flowers are available from floristry shops or online and are a novel way of having lasting memories from your wedding day. Now that the bouquet is out of the way, you need to start thinking about other members of your wedding party. Corsages and buttonholes are great for groomsmen, while Boutonniere's are ideal for parents of the bride
and groom and other members of the family. They are a great way of including members of the family, that may not have a role in the ceremony also. Once you have all the people accounted for, you need to start thinking about the venue flowers. Since the altar will be the focal point of your ceremony, consider using the most elaborate and beautiful decorations on it. Many weddings now include flowers at the reception, as they bring the scents, the colour and the style of the marriage to the evening section of the wedding day. The mood you want to create for your guests can be your guide in helping you decide on appropriate floral arrangements for a wedding reception. Consider your dinner plan, will you need a flower centre piece for guest tables? for the cake stand? for the gift table? or for the dance floor edge? All of these will push up the overall costs, so choose wisely and cut out where flowers may not be needed, to help keep the cost down.

hoosing a wedding photographer is not as easy as ringing up the first name that comes into your head. You need to invest time in choosing a photographer that will provide you with the service you are looking for on your big day. It is important to shop around, pay attention to photographers style. Does that photographers portfolio excite you or bore you? Would you like a similar photo collection of your wedding day? If you are not keen on the photographers work, look elsewhere. You should also go and
visit the photographer, to see if you like the person. You need to make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer, as they play a huge part in your wedding day line up. Look for a photographer that makes you laugh and feel relaxed. It is important that you look happy and at ease in your wedding photos. Compare various photographers rates in terms of value for money and what services and packages are they offering you! Do not be afraid to negotiate the price and ask about add ons such as Slideshow DVD and videography. There are
photographers to fit any pocket, but generally speaking you are looking at anywhere between â‚Ź1,500 â‚Ź2,500 for a decent sized album, produced by a creditable photographer. Photographers who charge big money for their services do so for a variety of reasons, so do not be afraid to ask why they are so much more expensive then another photographer in your locality. The most important thing to remember, is to know what you are getting for your money. Make sure you know what kind of album you are agreeing to and do not be afraid to ask about how the
photos will be grouped in the album. Ask the photographer about the kind of photo's he or she will be taking. Are you happy with all posed pictures, which give you a glamorous fashion shoot collection? Or do you want all 'reportage' photos, which are the opposite to posed pictures, where the photographer catches the subjects in action. Many brides and grooms are asking for a balanced mix between the posed and reportage as it portrays a balanced story of the days events. Make sure you are clear on copyright and licensing.
The copyright issue is a major hot potato. Many photographers will keep the copyright, which means you won't be able to print recopies for your family members later down the line, without using the photographer in question. Some photographers will give you a CD, which you can have printed again. One golden nugget of advice is to seek recommendations and ask other brides and grooms about their photographers and their satisfaction with them. This will help you
decide on a photographer that is right for you. Once you have decided, it is wise to meet the photographer before the wedding day to discuss location, the plan B, if the weather lets you down, the time spend on shooting and the photo plan. Perhaps you want a number of friends photos, family photos, romantic photos and a few comedic photos, make sure you give the photographer a heads up of what he will need to bring with him, so there is no shocks on the day for either party.
How to Save Money on Your Wedding Ceremony and Reception
Northwest Express October, 2013
Y
ou are getting married and want a beautiful event, yet you need to stick to a tight budget. This is a problem that faces many brides. Don't worry; there are ways to have your dream wedding without breaking the bank
1
Prioritize! Make a list of the most important things you want for your wedding and have your fiancĂŠ do the same. Are you most committed to having gorgeous flowers, inviting 400 people, hosting the wedding at a particular location, or serving filet mignon and lobster? Knowing your priorities before the planning starts will help you decide what to spend money on, and what you don't mind doing cheaply or doing without.
2
Trim the guest list. This is difficult but sometimes necessary if the cost per guest is going to break your budget. Cross off names on the list of guests who might feel obligated to come to the wedding if they are invited, but would not have their feelings hurt if they are not asked to attend. Think of
29
inviting only relatives with whom you have a close relationship instead of everyone related to you. Invite only the people who are important to you and your parents, rather than everyone you know.
3
Reduce the number of people in your bridal party. You have to buy nice gifts for every member of your bridal party, and that adds up. Plus, traditionally, the entire bridal party plus their dates are invited to the rehearsal dinner. Seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, all their dates, ring bearer and flower girls, and their families, plus both sets of parents and all the readers in the ceremony, plus officiant could add up to 40+ people to feed!
4
Have your wedding ceremony and reception held at a hotel, and ask for discounts when family and friends are staying at same hotel. Reserve a block of rooms for your guests several months before the wedding for the best rates. Speak with the appropriate manager when asking for discounts and reserving rooms.
5
Stick to the schedule for your ceremony and reception. Musicians will charge more if asked to perform beyond the time stated in their contract. You will also incur additional limo charges if your event runs longer than planned.
6
Ask friends to lend their talents by helping out with such things as invitations, flowers, and programs. Ask a friend with pretty penmanship to address your invitations instead of hiring a calligrapher. If you simplify your flowers and arrangements, perhaps a friend can assemble fresh or silk flowers which will save you hundreds of euros. Some of the most attractive wedding programs are printed from a home computer and then creatively assembled with coloured cardboard, tissue paper, ribbon, etc.
7
Consider having your wedding any day but Saturday. Fridays are also popular wedding days but may cost a lot less than a Saturday event. For even greater savings, choose a weekday evening for
Charlie Brady Photography
your wedding. Schedule the wedding to allow guests time to arrive at the ceremony after the work day has ended. Many guests enjoy weekday weddings as this frees up their weekends for other activities. Choose a date between November and April (between May and October if you live in the southern hemisphere) to avoid higher peak season rates in many areas.
8
Professionally posed and properly lighted photographs are one of the few beautiful keepsakes you'll have from your special day, but getting them doesn't have to break the bank. Choose an EXPERIENCED photographer who will include ALL OF THE IMAGES ON A CD for one low price. Then you can make as many inexpensive copies as you need rather than pay a huge reprint fee to the photographer. Also, consider a private prewedding encounter for the bride and groom followed by all of the posed photography. Completing everything before your wedding means you can spend the entire remainder of your day enjoying yourself and the company of your
guests. (Guests can't stand to be kept waiting between the wedding and the reception.)
9
After looking at the final plan of your wedding, but before paying any deposits, decide where you can simplify the whole process. Consider whether you really need choral singers and a string quartet at the ceremony and a wedding singer and a DJ at the reception. Releasing doves or butterflies or having a candlelighting ceremony are all wonderful, but may end up costing a lot of money. Simplicity saves money and if done well, your wedding may seem more serene and awe-inspiring.
10
Remember that the wedding is one day at the start of a life-long commitment. Look beyond the wedding day to the goals you will have as newlyweds. If you want to purchase a house in the next few years, keeping that as a priority throughout the wedding planning process will help you to be prudent about how much you spend on that one day.

What’s happening at Ballina Arts Centre
N
ow that the annual All-Ireland grieving is beyond us for another twelve months, Ballina Arts Centre is giving lots of opportunities to forget about the football and concentrate on some good arts events coming up in the months ahead. On top of that, other developments to look forward to at the venue include the long-awaited wine licence. From this month – October – we will be selling wine prior to events, as well as during the intervals. Patrons can look forward to a nice chilled glass of white or a warm red to wash down the cultural delights on offer. Ballina Arts centre is constantly striving to improve the experience of attending events at the venue, and the addition of a wine licence is a big one. Another exciting development is the completion of our new website. Our old one was almost seven years old, and a revamp was badly needed. We are delighted to announce that the revamp has been completed and our new swanky site is up and running, filled with information on upcoming events. Ballina Arts Centre will be showing some amazing
theatre, music and visual art, such as Andy Irvine, Jack L, the Ballina Chamber Choir, RTE Vanbrugh Quartet, Don Baker, Gerry Guthrie and Ronan Ó Snodaigh. An exciting autumn of theatre awaits too, with Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Caucasian Chalk Circle’, Patrick McCabe’s ‘Frank Pig Says Hello’ (based on his chilling novel The Butcher Boy” ), Sean Lysaght’s ‘Achill’, and Conal Gallen’s ‘A Bit on the Side’. Lacken-based playwright John Breen’s modern Irish classic ‘Alone it Stands’ returns to Ballina like a prodigal son after an eventful life on stages all around the world, with two nights in October to celebrate once again Munster’s historic win over the all-conquering All Blacks. There is also a treat for Beatle fans with the Beatlemal show on Friday, 11th October and the hilarious all Irish female group, The Nualas on 18th October Full details of all events at Ballina Art Centre can be found at www.ballinaartscentre.com. For more information on imminent events please contact Ballina Arts Centre, 096 73593. www.ballinaartscentre.com.

Car 'sold out' on Facebook before it gets here A
CAR has 'sold out' before it even gets here after five people bought the Irish allocation on Facebook. Ford last week launched a limited edition of their Fiestabased crossover, called the EcoSport. The company made 500 'available' on Facebook across some European countries, with the UK getting 120 and Ireland five. We understand the Irish buyers are from Louth, Cork, Wexford, Mayo and Kerry. The motor comes with either a 123bhp 1-litre EcoBoost petrol or 90bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine. And it costs €23,995 -- for both diesel and petrol. These limited edition models also have an upgraded version of the marque's Sync AppLink infotainment system -- it has new apps and functionality. Among them is 'Autoread' which reads out emails and text messages and allows you to dictate replies through the car's voice-recognition service.

Ten things we can ALL do to make our roads a little safer track. There is always the temptation to cut in or out, or take a shortcut. Too many take a chance. Again, I'm taken aback at the numbers cycling at night without a light of any sort. 6. Pedestrian dodgers You can't just dodge your way through traffic when crossing the road. Stop. It has reached the point of madness the way people feel they can take to the road while traffic flashes past them.
1. Mobile phones We've got to stop using them at the wheel. Think of trying to drive with one hand tied behind your back. Or your eyes closed. It's much the same thing. If it is so important that you should take a call, then pull over and give it your full attention. Driving requires your full attention. A second's distraction at 100km/h means you travel 'blind' for 88 feet. That is how much ground you are covering. PLEASE, if you do nothing else this week – STOP. 2. Children Please make sure they are securely strapped into your car. I am shocked at how often I see them given the freedom of the cabin by otherwise doting and loving mothers and fathers. But they are reckless mums and dads if they expose their children like this. Make sure the child-seats are properly secured, too.
3. Lights Turn on your lights in the evenings. I have been amazed at the number of cars I've met over the past few weeks where people have driven off, under street lights, without a flicker of illumination on the car. Suddenly they are in darkness and can't see or they are in darkness and can't be seen. Really dangerous. 4. Thought for deed Just because you indicate does not give you the right to do what you are signalling. Two narrow escapes for me have taught me that people are not really thinking much of the time. They put on the indicator and straight away pull out. I would say I've never seen people so preoccupied. And that is dangerous. 5. Shortcut cyclists There are junctions and junctures where cyclists find themselves at the end of their

7. Roundabout horrors We should all go back to our Rules of the Road. Nobody knows what to do in roundabouts. If you want to save yourself the price of a scary movie, watch the hairraising antics at the Sandyford Industrial Estate roundabout any weekday morning. 8. Speed merchants If we all knocked 10kmh off our speed, we'd be significantly safer. Not only that, there would be far fewer 'small' accidents and far fewer repair and touch-up bills. Believe me, as one who has cut back, you will feel a lot safer and in control behind the wheel. 9. Lane hoggers For God's sake stop hanging out there on the outside lane of the dual-carriageway or motorway doing 70km/80km. It is ONLY FOR OVERTAKING. Got that? This causes huge angst and the dangerous practice of 'undertaking' (people overtaking on the inside). 10. Red runners Stop running red lights. The whole place is at it. Two, three cars can pass through after the lights have gone red. Madness.

Winter Fodder and Financial MORANS Survival Guide Launched Dead Animal Collection BALLISODARE A new Winter Fodder and Financial Survival Guide, prepared by the inter agency fodder committee, was launched by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD at the ploughing championships in Laois, today, Wednesday, 25 September. The Guide provides practical advice for farmers to manage their fodder and feed reserves this winter and advice on managing their financial cash flow over the winter period. A survey carried out in the first week of September showed that overall there are adequate supplies, with a fodder surplus of 8% for a 140-day winter. However, it also found that one-in-five farmers face a deficit of 20% of their feed requirements. This winter fodder and financial survival guide is focussed at helping those farmers still with a deficit. It also includes advice for other farmers on how to manage their reserves in the event of an extended winter. Speaking at the launch, chairman of the inter agency fodder committee, Dr Tom Kelly, Teagasc said: ”We urge all farmers to do their own fodder budget and financial cash flow immediately. With this information they can then plan for the next six months and use the information to explore the best options for their own farms.“ Teagasc Nutritionist, Dr Siobhan Kavanagh said: “Farmers have assumed a 140-day winter feeding period which does not allow for an early winter or a late spring. The most important advice is to act early. The farmers that took steps earliest came through last winter better.“ Fintan Phelan, Teagasc farm management specialist said: “The higher costs incurred on farms this year has left many farmers in a tighter than expected cash position. We urge all farmers to address the issue and complete a 12-month cash flow
plan immediately. With this information they will be in a better position to talk to their creditors and agree a repayment schedule.“ The inter agency fodder committee includes representatives from Teagasc; Department of Agriculture, Food and
the Marine; Glanbia; Dairygold; ACA; IFA; ICMSA; Macra na Feirme; ICOS; Irish Grain and Feed Association; AIB; Ulster Bank; Bank of Ireland; IFJ; and, the Farming Independent. You can view the Guide at www.teagasc.ie

Breathing Techniques Can Help You Exercise
tory system is to learn how to cope with the panic that can occur with shortness of breath. “I have heard it described as when someone is hit in the stomach and can’t get their breath,” Berry says. “Exercise teaches people how to deal with that sensation, to work through it. They know they are going to get up the steps, and they will get short of breath, but now they know, ‘I’m not going to keel over and die.’” Breathing techniques can fight panicky feelings Mike McBride, a COPD patient from Arvada, Colo., who racewalks with oxygen in tow, says the first time he walked around his neighborhood for exercise, he thought he was going to have to call someone to pick him up. Over the years he has had setbacks and has learned his limits, but he continues to exercise at the gym and walks at least three times a week. “Learning to deal with the panic is the first thing to get past,” McBride says. Respiratory therapists offer two common breathing techniques: pursed lip and diaphragm breathing. Pursed lip breathing is performed by inhaling through the nose and
I
f you've got chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it's more important than ever to get some exercise—it can save your lung function and slow down the progression of COPD. The problem? The shortness of breath that comes with exertion can make it tempting to move less than you did before. This sets up a vicious cycle: shortness of breath leads to inactivity, which leads to a decline in fitness, which leads to further shortness of breath and inactivity. To get out of the rut, Michael Berry, PhD, chair of the department of health and exercise science at Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, N.C., recommends walking, stationary biking, and elliptical training. They work well for people with COPD, but strength and resistance training are playing an increasing role in patients’ regimens. As we age, people—particularly those over the age of 60—lose
muscle fibers, according to Berry. Healthy people lose fast-twitch muscles, which are used for short bursts of energy. But individuals with COPD tend to lose slowtwitch muscles, which are used for endurance activities as well. Weight training helps to improve skeletal muscle function so patients can remain active longer. Exercise of the lower legs—frequently walking or cycling—is the main focus of any organized exercise program for
COPD, says Gail Weinmann, MD, the deputy director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Division of Lung Diseases, but exercising the upper arms through resistance training is also helpful. (Like anyone starting an exercise program, a person with COPD should be cleared for exercise by a health care provider, Dr. Weinmann cautions.) then exhaling through pursed lips (as if one is going to whistle). The exhale should be longer than the inhale, but air should not be forced out. This breathing helps people relax and reduces the amount of air trapped in the lungs. Diaphragm breathing helps to strengthen this important muscle and is accomplished by lying on one’s back with knees bent and making the stomach, rather than the chest, move out while inhaling and in while exhaling. Patients are typically introduced to breathing exercises only when they visit a respiratory therapist or participate in a pulmonary rehabilitation program, Berry says, mainly because time-crunched primary care physicians focus on exercise and smoking cessation. McBride’s insurance would not pay for respiratory therapy, so he utilized breathing techniques he learned during Lamaze classes years ago. He visualizes wringing out a towel when he starts to panic and concentrates on breathing out twice as long as he breathes in. “A lot of people don’t want to do anything because they are afraid of getting short of breath," he says. "It doesn’t scare me anymore because I have had enough experience with the distress part.”
