T

he Mayo Association annual gala banquet was held on Saturday 8th February at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel. On the night St. Attracta's National School and the Charlestown Community were awarded the Dublin Mayo Association Meitheal Award. Over 120 Charlestown people were there to witness the fantastic event which had over 600 people in attendance. The people of Charlestown certainly had the loudest cheer as the Schools Board of Management representatives and Mayoral Candidates accepted the beautiful Crystal award. T

HE threat of the imposition of pylons throughout Mayo and Roscommon is further impacting on the struggling property market in the region, according to auctioneers. The major problem is that potential homebuyers have no idea exactly where the pylons will be located and the government’s decision to prolong the issue further to examine the feasibility of putting the grid underground is only prolonging the uncertainty. Naturally, the homebuyers are trying to avoid purchasing houses near the likely locations for the hotly-contested infrastructure. All the publicity surrounding the issue, and the vigorous campaigns of the action groups across the region has resulted in what one auctioneer from Mayo called “a major standoff” in the market at present. There are also fears that the pylons are just the thin end of the wedge and there will be a spiderweb of windfarms across areas of rural Ireland. Minister Rabbitte admitted recently there was a communications deficit in this regard. The pylons are a separate project from the windfarms, the former designed to meet domestic needs, while the latter is part of a wind export project. Mr Rabbitte, though, was also critical of the failure of EirGrid to win over the consent of communities affected by the company's proposals. "EirGrid is a very highly regarded, technically competent, professionally insightful delivery agency. The quality of the engagement by EirGrid has attracted criticism from all sides of the House and I can't ignore that fact," he said. Continued on Page 2

Targeting Indian tourists for Donegal

Louise McGee, B&B Ireland, based in Ballyshannon (right); with Amanda Burns, Tourism Ireland, at Tourism Ireland’s India seminar, which took place in Dublin’s Westbury Hotel.

T

ourism Ireland’s first-ever India seminar took place in Dublin, for the increasing number of Irish tourism enterprises interested in welcoming Indian tourists in 2014 and beyond. The event was attended by Tourism Minister Leo Varadkar and HE Mrs Radhika Lal Lokesh, Indian ambassador to Ireland, as well as 100 tourism companies from all around

Ireland – including B&B Ireland. Tourism Ireland aims to capitalise on the fact that India is now one of the fastest-growing tourist-generating countries in the world and grow the number of Indian tourists to the island of Ireland from the current estimated 21,000 per year. India is expected to reach 50 million outbound travellers by 2020. Factors in our favour include

increased access to Ireland, particularly the increased services for 2014 by Etihad and Emirates via the Middle East; as well as the Visa Waiver Scheme, which makes it easier for tourists from emerging tourism markets like India who are visiting Britain to also visit Ireland, without the cost or hassle of applying for a separate visa. Attendees at the India seminar heard expert advice from business leaders from the Indian travel industry; as well as the latest update on Indian travel trends and lots of practical advice and tips about how to promote effectively and ultimately to grow business from the Indian market. Niall Gibbons, Tourism Ireland’s CEO, said: “I am delighted that so many of our tourism industry partners from right around the island of Ireland signed up to attend our India seminar today; it is really encouraging to have such commitment and interest in the market. The seminar provides our partners with a greater understanding of the Indian market as they plan for the future.” India is one of the fastest-growing tourist-generating countries in the world. The United Nation World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) forecasts that the number of international Indian travellers will reach 50 million by 2020. The spend on outbound travel has doubled in the space of just six years and is expected to surpass US$28 billion by 2020.

Pylons impacting on property market - continued from front page A Roscommon-based auctioneer told this newspaper that the biggest issue now being raised by rural homebuyers is the location of the pylons and whether the property being targeted is within or near the corridor. There is the visual impact as well as the health concerns involved.Across the country the pylons issue is now becoming as big an issue in house purchase as schools, transport, churches and other facilities. The recent decision by the government will, it seems, kick the problem further down the road and further property market concerns can be anticipated in the coming months.

2014 Colm Quinn BMW Galway International Rally Final

A

fter a demanding two days when the drivers had to deal with some appalling conditions, Donegal cousins Declan & Brian Boyle took their first ever International rally win on the Colm Quinn BMW Galway International Rally in their Subaru Impreza WRC. After completing the 13 stages of the opening round of the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Championship they had 25.5 seconds to spare over the reigning Tarmac Champion Garry Jennings with Rory Kennedy in the co-driver seat in their Impreza WRC. On a shortened pair of stages completed

three times on the first day there was very little to choose between the top five overnight with Boyle holding a slender advantage over Jennings and Eugene Donnelly holding third place in the Mini WRC. Donagh Kelly and Sam Moffett were battling it out for fourth place but only 25 seconds separated all of the drivers overnight. With the first stage on Sunday being the infamous and tricky Black Road drama was to be expected and it duly arrived, with Donnelly crashing out on the latter part of the stage with Boyle continuing to lead. Over Lough Cutra there was very little change other than Jennings closing the gap to just 0.2 seconds behind Boyle, but on the following stage Bradys yard the rally swung Boyles way decisively when Jennings hit a flood and ended up in a field. The excursion cost him 40 seconds and dropped him back to fourth place behind Donagh Kelly and Sam Moffett. Despite an excellent time on the Black Road stage from Jennings when he pared back Boyles lead by 13 seconds and moved back to second, he would still need Boyle to hit trouble to have a chance of victory. Boyle held his nerve to take the maiden International win with Jennings second and Donagh Kelly edging Sam Moffett for third place on the final stage. In Group N Colm Murphy led the category for a long time until he damaged a wishbone on the Black Road stage which left Stephen McCann to take the honours with Eugene Meegan just seven seconds behind. Martin Doherty eventually took third place in Group N with the top three separated by less than 40 seconds. The Modified Championship saw Declan Gallagher open his campaign with

ONLY €150 maximum points in his Toyota Starlet after a fearless performance all weekend. Once Peadar Hurson was forced to retired his Escort WRC on the first day, the Donegal man proved unstoppable despite the best efforts of Wesley Patterson in his Escort. The eventually winning margin was just over two minutes with Martin Donnelly in the Corolla WRC almost three minutes further back. Ed O’Callaghan, Brian Brogan and Pat Donegan all retired from the event. Ray Cunningham won the Historic category in his Mini to move into the championship lead after two rounds with Brendan McAree bringing his Porsche home as second registered competitor and the red Porsche of John Spiers coming home third. The Modified Championship now moves to the West Cork Rally for its second round while the main Championship and the Historic Championship are back in action at the Circuit of Ireland Rally in April. Galway Motor Club deserve great credit for their efforts and persistence in keeping the rally on track despite everything the weather threw at them over the past few weeks, and an enjoyable event was had by all over the weekend.

Positive Ireland Workshops T

he National Positivity Trail takes place from 28th January to 4th March 2014. The first of its kind in Ireland, the aim of this 6-week series of workshops is to teach people from Belfast to Cork tangible coping skills so they can manage the stresses of everyday life. Although the word ‘positivity’ is bandied around a lot these days, sometimes it’s the last word we want to hear. Positivity is the ability to feel hopeful despite a challenging environment –it’s about resilience and resourcefulness. There’s no escaping the fact that life regularly dishes up problems, but it’s our perception of these issues that determines our ability to cope. Every day we’re inspired by examples of people who uncover incredible strength and courage to overcome the most difficult and painful of situations. Attitude really is everything. After the glitzy celebrations and indulgences of Christmas, the anti-climax of a bleak January can bring doom and gloom. For many, the reality of the recession is brought closer to home as credit card bills reminding us of festive excess flit through our postboxes. Struggling with strict diets, fitness regimes and restrictive New Year’s resolutions, it’s a time of year that can be synonymous with feeling deprived, deflated and down. As many of us battle with anxieties and fears

around change, failure, money, work and relationships for much of the year, our worries are often exacerbated in January. Counteracting the effects of what some feel is the most depressing time of the year, The National Positivity Trail provides some light. With the awakening of spring and the lengthening and brightening of days, late January and February represent new beginnings. This period of renewal and growth marks the shedding of old stuff that doesn’t serve us and the potential of better things to come. With a love for all aspects of positive health, founder of the trail, Moira Geary, The Recombobulator™, has a background in a number of modalities including nursing and midwifery since 1980. An expert in cognitive re-imprinting and neurological re-patterning, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and trainer Moira has worked with the world’s leading mind experts including Paul McKenna and Richard Bandler. Enduring financial hardship and personal tragedy has enabled Moira to overcome her own challenges so she can walk her talk. Over the last ten years, she has taught thousands of people all over the world how to manage stress and fear. Moira is on a mission to get everyone in Ireland on board The National Positivity Trail

and feeling more optimistic about life. Believing that people without the mechanisms to deal with stress are missing out, she says “There is always another way. It doesn’t have to be as hard as we make it, we can get relief.” The National Positivity Trail aims to teach people key coping skills so they can feel lighter, more confident, and become open to the possibilities around them. Attendees will leave the event armed with 4 profound but practical techniques that they can apply to their everyday lives. These simple, step-bystep techniques will provide benefits in the areas of home, finances, social, career and illness. Taking in a venue a week, The National Positivity Trail schedule is: • Limerick City, Tuesday 28th January 2014 • Tralee, Co. Kerry, Tuesday 4th February • Dublin City, Tuesday 11th February 2014 • Galway City, Tuesday 18th February 2014 • Cork Cit , Tuesday 25th February 2014 • Belfast City, Tuesday 4th March 2014 Moira is giving her time free to teach her techniques at these workshops and in return is requesting a €15 donation to support causes that are focused on empowerment. Enterprise group plans to address Mayo’s jobs crisis

ndigenous business, foreign direct investment and infrastructure investment: These are the key areas of focus by a group aiming to address the jobs crisis in Mayo. The aim is to create sustainable employment in the county. The Mayo Enterprise and Innovation Advocacy Group has been working over the last two years, and has held regular meetings with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to discuss the way forward. The group consists of four well-known industry figures – Tom Canavan, John Caulfield, Peter Glynn and Dom Molloy – and they engaged in broad consultation with enterprise groups, state agencies, private companies and individual entrepreneurs at county and national level. The group believes that the first priority area it identified – indigenous business – will be greatly influenced by the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) due to open under the auspices of

TOTAL ACCESS

Mayo County Council in the coming months. The LEO, staffed with experts in strategic sectors like tourism and agri-food, will greatly help companies in these growing fields to create more jobs. When it comes to the second priority area, the group feels the county must have at least one ‘enterprise ready’ facility with 35,000- to 75,000-squarefoot capacity, and that it should be marketed globally by such agencies as the IDA. The group believes infrastructure investment should enable high-speed broadband, electricity generation and energy transmission capacity in order to meet future growth needs, as well as a modern roads network and a fully developed airport at Knock to grow the tourism sector. Responding to the conclusions of the group, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said in a statement that ‘the business case for infrastructure investment in airports, roads,

electricity and broadband must be fully explained and justified so that a county like Mayo can be prioritised for such developments’. He stated that Government funding for regional airports, such as Knock, was now confirmed for the next ten years and added that there are plans to deliver high-speed broadband to Castlebar and Westport. He reiterated his stance that where foreign direct investment companies locate is ‘very much up to themselves’, but added that a big ‘selling point’ would be to have such a facility ‘up and ready for immediate occupation by a company’, and he urged Mayo County Council and the IDA to have two or three ‘enterprise ready’ buildings in the county that could be marketed overseas. The Taoiseach agreed with the group that the LEO ‘must be staffed with high-calibre and capable staff who are experts in the sectors ’, adding

that ‘a focus on tourism and agri-food sectors was playing to the strengths of the county’. He also predicted that marine and renewable energy ‘will quickly emerge as key sectors’. He concluded by encouraging the group to devise a multiyear investment plan for the county.

London ceremony to honour Castlebar born inventor

A

n Taoiseach will perform a special ceremony in London on Tuesday, March 11th. A newly-developed grave and headstone officially marking the final resting place of Louis Brennan, inventor extraordinaire, is to be unveiled in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Harrow Road. Mr. Kenny will be accompanied by the Mayor of Castlebar, Councillor Noreen Heston, A plaque commemorating the work of Louis Brennan will be unveiled in the adjoining oratory and a memorial service conducted by Monsignor Canon Thomas Egan, chief administrator, St. Mary’s Cemetery, will be held. Louis Philip Brennan was

born on Main Street, Castlebar, on January 28, 1852, the 10th child of Thomas Brennan, a hardware merchant in the town. Following the death of at least five of his older siblings as small children during the Irish Famine years (1842 to 1847), the Brennan family emigrated to start a new life in the gold rush boomtown of Melbourne, Australia. Louis Brennan started his working life as a watchmaker there and went on to become an Irish-Australian mechanical engineer and inventor of Brennan’s torpedo, the world’s first practical guided missile, and the gyroscopic monorail. Sir Winston Churchill once remarked: “Sir, your invention promises to revolutionise the railway systems of the world.” Over the next three years, Churchill would do his very best to ensure that Brennan’s gyroscopic monorail would become the must-have transport system of the 20th century. He did not succeed but nonetheless, with a torpedo and a helicopter also under his belt, Brennan must surely be the most remarkable inventor ever born in Ireland.

At the tender age of 22, Brennan invented for coastal defence a torpedo which was propelled by counter-rotating screws driven by the unwinding of two fine steel wires from internal drums and steered by the differential action of the two wires, which were wound on to drums on shore or on shipboard by a 28horsepower steam engine. Louis Brennan was manager of the Government Torpedo Manufacturing Plant at Gillingham, Kent, which manufactured his own torpedo, from 1880 to 1896. He took up employment with the Ministry of Munitions from 1910 until 1918, when he moved to the Royal Aircraft factory at Farnborough, where he invented a type of helicopter. However, the withdrawal of funds prevented the invention being made a commercial proposition. Louis Brennan had at least 38 items patented in London by the time of his death. While on holiday in Montreux, Switzerland, Louis was knocked down by a car on December 26, 1931, and died as a result of the injuries received on January 17, 1932.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in plot number s Cemetery, Harrow Road, London, N.W. 10, on January 26, 1932. Following a public meeting held in the Royal Hotel to arrange for the erection of a memorial to Louis Brennan two years ago, a local committee to arrange for the erection of a suitable memorial to this famous inventor was established. This small and dedicated group, consisting of local historians Brian Hoban and Ernie Sweeney, Michael Baynes, Michael Feeney, M.B.E., and Mayo Person of the Year, and Councillor Ger Deere, have worked tirelessly behind the scenes this past two years to ensure this project would reach completion. Now, thanks to the sponsorship among members of the Irish Diaspora in England, and the support of Castlebar Town Council, Louis Brennan will be given the recognition he richly deserves. Descendants of Louis Brennan from the US will join with members of the organising committee from Castlebar and members of Mayo Associations in the UK for this historic event.

Minister launches Sligo as European Town of Sport, 2014

M

inister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has officially launched Sligo European Town of Sport 2014. Sligo obtained the prestigious award following an adjudication process which concluded at the end of last year. This should be a major boost for the town. Speaking at the event Minister Ring said the award will

put Sligo on the European map in sporting terms. It will give Sligo a great opportunity to form linkages and partnerships with other Towns of Sport throughout Europe. The partnership approach to the delivery of sports which Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership has developed with the schools, clubs, community and local organisations and volunteers has also been very important

in supporting increased participation in sport and active recreation throughout the county. Minister Ring also unveiled the Sionnach Relay Series. This will be Ireland’s First Overnight Team Relay Event, which takes place on July 26-27. This is an outdoor music festival centered around a tented village and combines it with the fun of a 24hour charity event.

Kilmovee and other parts of Mayo, made their presence felt last week when Eirgrid opened a new information office in the town for the Grid West project. The campaigners staged a sit-in protest on Wednesday evening last and also returned on Thursday to continue their protest over the plans for a 400kv power line through counties Roscommon and

Mayo. “Yet again we left with the same ‘spin’ with Eirgrid saying it’s not possible to go underground citing reliability, lack of expansion options and cost,” Rupert Davis from the Roscommon and Mayo Against Pylons (RAMP) group said. Campaigners have signalled that they will continue to register their protest to the plans by returning to the offices this week and beyond. Meanwhile

Protests at Eirgrid’s Ballaghaderreen office Similar to what happened elsewhere in Mayo and across the region, around 100 campaigners descended on the new Eirgrid information office in Ballaghaderreen last week to voice their concern over plans to build an overhead power line in the region. Landowners and concerned residents from Ballaghaderreen, Tibohine, Ballinameen, and Frenchpark, joined by others from Foxford,

M. Carney, Frenchpark

Eirgrid said it will continue to give people the opportunity to engage with the project team. “In the event that the project member is unable to answer the query raised, contact details will be taken and a follow up response will be sent,” a spokesperson said. The information office is located at The Square, Ballaghaderreen and will open every Wednesday and Thursday from 10a.m.-6p.m..

alway firemen dealing with flooding and a fire in the underground area of Leisureland following the storm three weeks ago. Galway was bracing itself for another ferocious storm and tidal battering over a 24 hour period last weekend with gusts of over 80mph predicted, accompanied by the highest tides of recent months. Thousands of sandbags had been put in place in the Spanish Arch and Prom areas as vulnerable businesses and households battened up the

hatches, following the issuing of an orange weather warning by Met Éireann. Meanwhile, it could yet take weeks or even months before the swimming pool and gym at the Leisureland complex in Salthill reopens as experts continue to assess the impact of the worst storm damage in decades. Fresh concerns arose this week over the impact which sea water had on tiles and grouting at the 25 metre pool during the worst flooding experienced in the 41-year history of the building.

Experts had hoped to give a timeframe for the reopening of the pool and gym to the Board of Leisureland today (Friday), but the new concerns have further delayed hopes of returning to business as usual at the complex. Sea water was only drained from the pool on Wednesday of last week and experts are now awaiting the outcome of tests on the impact which the salt water had on the tiles and grouting in the area. If it is found that the tiles

need to be replaced, the final cost of repairing the damage could vastly exceed the initial estimate of €500,000 – and it could take months before the pool reopens for business. “The impact which the salt water had on the tiles is a major concern and, while they are awaiting the outcome of these tests, the experts have been unable to give us a timeframe,” said Cllr Donal Lyons (Independent), Chairman of the Leisureland Board, yesterday.

Recession closes one in four of Galway’s pubs

A

staggering 25% of pubs in County Galway have closed their doors since the recession began almost six years ago, it has been re-

vealed by local vintners’ representatives. And it has resulted in a ‘dog eat dog’ situation within the industry with one publican in North

Galway charging a mere €2.50 for all pints. However, the rate in the number of pub closures across the county has slowed down in recent months and the industry reported an encouraging Christmas trade – which had a lot to do with the thousands of emigrants who returned home for the festive period. But the fact that more than 200 pubs in County Galway are no longer trading is an indication of a change of lifestyle and the fact that home drinking has increased dramatically. County Galway Vintners PRO Timmy Broderick from Kilconnell said that below cost selling of alcohol in supermarkets and off-licences had effectively resulted in these closures and had led to

a home drinking culture. Mr. Broderick, a publican and member of Galway County Council, said that the rate of closures had eased significantly over the latter half of 2013 as members of the trade were trying new ventures to bring customers in. He said that many of the pubs, particularly those based in towns, had opted to try and target the lunchtime trade while more rural publicans were providing music or other forms of entertainment for their customers. But many drinkers feel that the price of the pint is simply too dear. Late last year the price of a pint of stout or beer tipped the €4 mark while many publicans are charging €4.50 for a pint of lager.

HE news last week that Sligo and other Irish hospitals are facing cuts of four percent, on average, in their 2014 budgets is hardly surprising, but worrying all the same The stark details were contained in the Service Plan for 38 local acute hospitals. The most recent Performance Report for Sligo Regional showed its 2013 budget had overspent in the first 11 months of the year by 6.5%, or €5.8 million. This was despite the fact of a significant budget increase 11 months ago, an increase which has now been clawed back. However, that increase at the

start of 2013 masked serious underfunding in 2012. In Sligo's case it was left short by more than ten million euro that year. There may well be a deficit at the end of 2014 as well. Last year hospital managers were not permitted, in theory anyway, to budget for a deficit. The deficit happened in 2013. It remains to be seen if the diktat from the Department re deficits survive or become nothing more than lip service. Overall, two hundred million euro has been cut from the budget for 38 hospitals in the coming year. HSE boss Tony O'Brien had already warned that 2014 would be a challenging year for the

Irish health service. Statistics in the most recent Performance Report released online, ie up to the end of November 2013, show bulges in spending on agency staff and overtime costs for Sligo Regional. It rose nearly 57% in Sligo while there was a marked decline by 7.5% for agency staff costs and overtime in Letterkenny, looking at the first 11 months of 2012 and then 2013. It is not specified that those bulges are due to the influx of patients into Sligo Regional last August after the new hospital in Letterkenny flooded and it had to be taken out of commission for a period.

“Set the Twilight Reeling” at Ballina Arts Centre 6th February – 29th March. Set the Twilight Reeling is an exhibition featuring the work of three painters: Derval Symes, Gary Robinson and Gerard McGourty. Each of them explore different aspects of the human condition in their work, but underpinning each of their

oeuvres is a commitment to the aesthetic. Curator Sean Walsh describes the tone of each of three artists’ work as a ‘twilit aesthetic... they all capture beauty, in an end-of-the-evening kind of way’. Derval Symes elegiac paintings

draw inspiration from the peat bogs of South Roscommon, while Gerard McGourty’s expressionistic works are rooted in his instinctive and natural grasp of composition, harmony and balance. Gary Robinson creates autumnal, earthy pictures with a stark

arresting quality. Set the Twilight Reeling runs until 29th March. Admission free. All welcome. Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett St., Ballina, Co. Mayo.

Dog bites chunks out of owner’s £80,000 Aston Martin, given away to new owners

See SWNS story SWASTON; A builder was forced to find a new home for his dog after he ATE the side of prized £80,000 Aston Martin. Royston Grimstead, 42, was distraught when he came home from work to find border collie spaniel cross Luce had chomped a huge chunk out of the wheel arch of his luxury motor. He thinks the four-year-old pooch had heard him talking about potentially rehoming her and decided to leave a parting gift he could not forget. Royston said: "I came home and saw her covered in white stuff and I thought she had got a bird and it was feathers - but it was the fibreglass from the car. owners what she’d done and joked that he may have her back when they find out. The builder had bought the Aston Martin DB9 Volante 15 months ago, and luckily, is insured for the £3,000 worth of damage.

Valentine’s Day ready meal for couples who love TV dinners

F

orget sitting in a crowded restaurant eating over-priced food on Valentine’s Day, you can now impress your date from the comfort of your own home. The Valendines TV Dinner is the first all-in-one, three course, ready meal that comes complete with its own candle. It’s the ultimate innovation for millions of couples who might prefer to stay in together this Valentine’s Day (or for those who can’t find a date). According to new research from Freeview, a quarter of British couples plan to spend the most romantic day of the year at home in front of the TV. ‘Going out for Valentine’s Day is expensive so it’s no wonder many couples would rather stay in to watch TV,’ explained Guy North of Freeview, who created the trial product . ‘There’s plenty to keep everyone entertained from Benidorm to EastEnders and the Winter Olympics. ‘That’s why the Valendines TV Dinner could be the perfect solution for those who want a touch of romance without missing the programmes they love.’ The Valendines TV Dinner: Starter – Pea and ham soup Main – Fish pie Main side – Carrots and green beans Dessert – Sticky toffee pudding and custard

Man ignores girlfriend’s calls, gets zapped as punishment

F

urther evidence that basically everything weird happens in Florida: a woman has used a stun gun on her boyfriend after he ignored her calls. The 28-year-old woman had been arguing with her boyfriend of two years because of his refusal to answer her phone calls when she pulled out the stun gun and zapped him in his side. ‘She continued to stun the victim as he was trying to get away from her,’ a police report read after the woman was arrested for misdemeanour bat-

tery. The pair, residents of Fort Walton Beach, were said to have got into an argument near the intersection of Bob Sikes Boulevard and Denton Boulevard when she confronted him about not having answered her calls. A deputy of the Okaloosa County sheriff’s office reported seeing redness on the man’s body after the incident, which the woman admitted to causing. She has a plea date of February 11. The pair are expecting a child together.

Missing cat returns fattened up after 3 years in pie factory

A

cat that went missing for three years returned home with a larger waistline having spent his time away in a pie fac-

tory. When overweight Woosie went back to his home in St Austell, Cornwall, owners Helen and Phillip Johns were shocked – but not just because he had returned. The black feline had gained a few pounds after apparently feasting on Ginsters Cornish pasties at one of their factories 30 miles away. Mrs Johns said: ‘I was gobsmacked. We never expected to see him again, not after he’d been missing for three years. ‘He’s a heavy cat now – he’s quite large. We think that he may have been eating all the pasties and sandwiches up there.’ She added to the Plymouth Herald: ’He’s probably been given lots of titbits from staff there.’

Is that 1 hump or 2 with your morning latte? Try your coffee with camel milk… If you’re feeling particularly parched after your journey to work this morning, this could be the answer. Try a soothing ‘camelatte’ – made with Arabian camel milk. The Camelicious brand is said to have a ‘clean and palatable’ taste and is rich in fatty acids, with half the fat of cow’s milk but three times the vitamin C. It is already used in coffee sold across the United Arab Emirates and has been shipped over by the Taylor Street Baristas chain to raise money for the Farm Africa charity. Richard Ford, from The Grocer magazine, is behind the fund-raising idea. ‘When I first approached Camelicious about my fundraising project for Farm Africa, ordering a “camelatte” in my favourite coffee shop seemed like a dream,’ he said. ‘Cow, goat and even buffalo milk are all widely available here and there is no reason why camel milk can’t make it into the mainstream too.’ The milk has been sold at Taylor Street’s branch in Bank, central London, and will be available, for a £1 donation, at its Brighton shop on Saturday. Camelicious is produced by Emirates Industry for Camel Milk & Products. Deputy general manager Mutasher al Badry said: ‘Camel milk has always been known in the Middle East and eastern Africa. But accessibility for the wider public has always been limited.’

Who Invited This Lot?

Northwest Express February, 2014

Y

ou’re getting married! It’s set to be the best day of your life. You’ve sorted the venue, the caterers, even the dress. But what about the allimportant guest list? Once you’ve jumped the ‘his guests vs yours’ ratio hurdle, the reality of the situation hits home. Your nearest, dearest and frankly, weirdest will all be together in one room and, whoa, what a potent mix that is. But rest assured, without this motley crew of hangers-on, drunkards and odd bods, your big day wouldn’t be nearly as special, or indeed, as memorable…

room: he’s either holding court with jokes about STDs, or doing tequila slammers with your teetotal uncle. Or worst of all, he’s miming a crude anecdote from the stag do. But come on: isn’t that what the Best Man’s speech is for?

THE FOB

THE WANNABE DJ

THE GROOVER The natural counterpart to the

Wannabe DJ: a mal-coordinated, middle-aged whirling dervish causing indiscriminate chaos across the dance floor. And seemingly unaware of the danger he poses – whether ‘bopping’, ‘jiving’, ‘doing the worm’, grabbing random females to swing round precariously, way too close to the wedding cake, or performing his own terrifyingly literal interpretation of breakdancing. In short: the kind of man the producers of You’ve Been Framed have been dreaming of for years.

This is where your day could go a bit ‘Pete Tong’. For some people, the traditional wedding soundtrack of Abba, Sinatra and then ‘something faster for you young ones’ just doesn’t cut it. Which explains why this guy will be stood in the disco booth all night, drunkenly flicking through his iPod to show the nonplussed actual DJ some obscure Prodigy Bside that is ‘absolutely 100% totally guaranteed to get this place bangin’, man.’ That may be so – but shall we wait until they’ve finished the speeches?

Of course he’s invited; it would be rude not to. Especially considering he’s paid for at least some of it. Which explains why he’s wandering round all day with a slightly furrowed, dazed expression. Because not only is he letting go of the apple of his eye (you), he’s being forced to deliver a speech and display actual emotion. He also gets to watch a load of people he either a) doesn’t know, or b) has never liked, guzzle their way through £10,000 that he’d previously earmarked for a new conservatory. That’s exactly why you should love him even more

THE ELIGIBLE BACHELOR

THE WEEPER

THE BITTER DIVORCEE

THE TOTAL LAD

Weddings, as any fool knows, are occasions of dignified celebration. But – uh-oh – one fool didn’t get the memo. You can tell from the guffawing at the back of the

poppingly stunning. Hence the patch of silence that follows her around the room, as middle-aged men unaccustomed to seeing attractive young women close-up stop talking and just gawp hopelessly. Until being roundly busted by their own better half.

Did you detect a snorting sound during the ceremony? Perhaps a sarcastic cackle during the vows – or a cautionary shake of the head when the groom said ‘I do’? Don’t worry if you didn’t: the Bitter Divorcee will be available all night to pour scorn on the concepts of marriage, fidelity and love for anyone within earshot of the bar. Until 9pm, that is, when she drunkenly makes a desperate, thunderous pitch to grab the bouquet, knocks over a toddler and skids headlong into the cake.

Sure, weddings can be emotionally overwhelming. For the bride, groom and close family, certainly. But what, pray tell, is the matter with this woman? This distant auntie or family friend who can’t help staring at you with happy, glistening eyes, holding your face lovingly as she offers banal… advice… in … halting… sentences. Before she chokes into her handkerchief and is led away to pull herself together in the lobby. THE HOTTIE File her under ‘a little something for the dads’: your beautiful friend from work/university who – annoyingly – never fails to turn up to social soirees looking slim, immaculately dressed and eye-

Invitations don’t come more winwin than this: ‘Hey, Dave! Come to our wedding – there’ll be a free bar and loads of single women!’ But not even in his wildest dreams did he think he’d get this level of whispered, pointy attention. Because only now has the realisation struck: on this day of romance, commitment and high emotion, he’s the only person for 30 square miles who’s both single and in possession of a Ychromosome. And who’s not your weird, squinty Uncle Pete. THE AWKWARD TEENAGER He’s grown up! Isn’t he supposed to be, like, six years old? Seemingly not: since you last set eyes on your cousin, he’s apparently stopped wearing Spider-Man pyjamas and has instead blossomed into a lanky, acne-flecked beanpole with a mouth so full of dental braces that he looks like he might actually be gargling paperclips. And now forced to wear uncomfortable nylon trousers for the day, he can only mumble shyly and blush a vivid shade of puce when one of your bridesmaids – the one with the impressive cleavage – walks past.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY The perennial wedding mystery: why so many brides and grooms invite a former squeeze. True, you might still be ‘good friends’. And nothing else quite proves the sanctity of your vows than having a guest at the ceremony who has also seen you naked (parents notwithstanding, obviously). But come on: you know the real reason. There’s no better way of saying to that ex: ‘Hey – look at what you could have had, and now never will!’ THE RELLY YOU DON’T KNOW The fact that even your mum’s face has gone blank says it all. With his scruffy beard and rumpled suit he seems friendly – and he certainly appears to know everyone’s name. But who exactly is this man sipping champagne, demolishing the hors d’oeuvres and wishing you well? Who cares? One more guest equals one more gift, right? THE DRUNK The cast-iron rule of weddings since prehistoric times: there’s always one. One perennially single girl who ruins all chance of romance by downing five glasses of bubbly on an empty stomach and sliding off the bar before being put to bed by 8pm. Or one perennially single man who quietly drinks himself into a stupor during the speeches, then clumsily tries to dirty-dance with an auntie before falling asleep next to the speaker. Indeed, it’s a shame you never get both at the same time; they’d probably make a lovely couple. THE BAFFLED GRANNY Snatched from her one-bed bungalow and wheeled out for the reception, it’s the family matriarch. Ancient, shrivelled, smelling faintly of mothballs – and visibly confused, as she peers at the procession of ever-younger relatives she’s only dimly aware of ever meeting before. Or stares blankly at a dance floor filled with people cavorting to Lordknows-what racket while someone spoon-feeds her trifle. Until 7pm, that is, when she’s deemed to be ‘tired’ and wheeled back to the care home, where… Hang on. What do you mean we ‘took the wrong grandma’?

How to Save Money on Your Wedding Ceremony & Reception

Northwest Express February, 2014

22

Y

ou are getting married and want a beautiful event, yet you need to stick to a tight budget. This is a problem that faces many brides. Don't worry; there are ways to have your dream wedding without breaking the bank

1

Prioritize! Make a list of the most important things you want for

your wedding and have your fiancĂŠ do the same. Are you most committed to having gorgeous flowers, inviting 400 people, hosting the wedding at a particular location, or serving filet mignon and lobster? Knowing your priorities before the planning starts will help you decide what to spend money on, and what you don't mind doing

cheaply or doing without.

2

Trim the guest list. This is difficult but sometimes necessary if the cost per guest is going to break your budget. Cross off names on the list of guests who might feel obligated to come to the wedding if they are invited, but would not have their feelings hurt if they are not

asked to attend. Think of inviting only relatives with whom you have a close relationship instead of everyone related to you. Invite only the people who are important to you and your parents, rather than everyone you know.

3

Reduce the number of people in your bridal party.

You have to buy nice gifts for every member of your bridal party, and that adds up. Plus, traditionally, the entire bridal party plus their dates are invited to the rehearsal dinner. Seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, all their dates, ring bearer and flower girls, and their families, plus both sets of parents and all the readers in the ceremony, plus officiant could add up to 40+ people to feed!

4

Have your wedding ceremony and reception held at a hotel, and ask for discounts when family and friends are staying at same hotel. Reserve a block of rooms for your guests several months before the wedding for the best rates. Speak with the appropriate manager when asking for discounts and reserving rooms.

5

Stick to the schedule for your ceremony and reception. Musicians will charge more if asked to perform beyond the time stated in their contract. You will also incur additional limo charges if your event runs longer than planned.

6

Ask friends to lend their talents by helping out with such things as invitations, flowers, and programs. Ask a friend with pretty penmanship to address your invitations instead of hiring a calligrapher. If you simplify your flowers and arrangements, perhaps a friend can assemble fresh or silk flowers which will save you hundreds of euros. Some of the most attractive wedding programs are printed from a home computer and then creatively assembled with coloured cardboard, tissue paper, ribbon, etc.

7

Consider having your wedding any day but Saturday. Fridays are also popular wedding days but may cost a lot less than a Saturday event. For even greater savings, choose a weekday evening for your wedding. Schedule the wedding to allow guests time to arrive at the ceremony after the work day has ended. Many guests enjoy weekday weddings as this frees up their weekends for other

activities. Choose a date between November and April (between May and October if you live in the southern hemisphere) to avoid higher peak season rates in many areas.

8

Professionally posed and properly lighted photographs are one of the few beautiful keepsakes you'll have from your special day, but getting them doesn't have to break the bank. Choose an EXPERIENCED photographer who will include ALL OF THE IMAGES ON A CD for one low price. Then you can make as many inexpensive copies as you need rather than pay a huge reprint fee to the photographer. Also, consider a private pre-wedding encounter for the bride and groom followed by all of the posed photography. Completing everything before your wedding means you can spend the entire remainder of your day enjoying yourself and the company of your guests. (Guests can't stand to be kept waiting between the wedding and the reception.)

9

After looking at the final plan of your wedding, but before paying any deposits, decide where you can simplify the whole process. Consider whether you really need choral singers and a string quartet at the ceremony and a wedding singer and a DJ at the reception. Releasing doves or butterflies or having a candle-lighting ceremony are all wonderful, but may end up costing a lot of money. Simplicity saves money and if done well, your wedding may seem more serene and awe-inspiring.

10

Remember that the wedding is one day at the start of a life-long commitment. Look beyond the wedding day to the goals you will have as newlyweds. If you want to purchase a house in the next few years, keeping that as a priority throughout the wedding planning process will help you to be prudent about how much you spend on that one day.

Choosing the Wedding Cake Northwest Express February, 2014

32

W

hen it comes to planning a wedding, few decisions are as delightful as choosing your wedding cake. After all, what could be better than sampling slice after slice of delicious cake. The cake is one of the most prevalent symbols of your wedding. It will feature prominently in your wedding pictures and it will be a focal point for your guests when they arrive at the reception hall. Your cake can pull together your colours and wedding theme in one beautiful and delicious package. When it comes to choosing a wedding cake, you must first consider what it is you are looking for? Do you want a traditional ivory tiered cake? a modern chocolate and vanilla cake or fruit flavoured art piece? Whether you are utterly clueless to what you want or have a good idea of the style of cake you want, next you must visit bakers to see what they can offer you. This task must be done in good time (approximately 4 months before the big day itself). You should visit two or three bakers and ask to see their portfolio. This will help you determine if you like the bakers style. In order to ascertain what size cake you will need, consider how many guests you will have in attendance. Remember, the bigger the cake, the more

expensive it will be. One way of saving money is to order a smaller cake for display at the reception and two sheet cakes that can be cut and placed on plates in the kitchen and served to the guests. The sheet cake can be considerably plainer than the cake on display. This saves a huge cost and still means you get to show off a cake! When considering the shape and size of the cake. Traditional round and square cakes are still very popular and easy to cut. Look through wedding magazines and bakers samples to find a wedding cake design that dazzles you! The cake's design should match the aesthetic of the day. A formal wedding generally calls for a structured, multi-layer cake. For a less formal wedding, you can embrace the unconventional cake. Multiple tiers allows you to offer several kinds of cake each level can be different, offering something for everyone. So if the bride is a fan of cheesecake, but the groom is a big fan of fruit cake, you can now have both in one cake. A common combination includes one tier - mouse filled cake, one tier fruit, one tier chocolate and vanilla cake, frosted with butter cream frosting or rolled fondant. Icing traditionally comes in either a

simple sugar recipe or rich cream cheese variety and usually is white or ivory, but more contemporary approaches involve other colours. If you wearing ivory or champagne, let the baker know and they can tint the icing accordingly. Remember, anything goes from dark chocolate to pale pastels, with modern wedding cakes. They tend to be decorated to match the bride's lace pattern on her gown or even the bouquet. Some couples design the cake around the decor or theme of the wedding. Brides often go for lace, embroidery applique or elegant drapes. Common features include; ruffles, bows, swirls and ribbons formed from pastiage and blown sugar. Cakes can also be garnished with real ivy leaves, non-toxic flowers and chocolate towers and truffles. When it comes to wedding cake, your imagination is the only limit to the appearance of your special confection. While it is essential that the wedding cake appeals to your visual senses, it is even more important that it taste's moist and delicious. Tasting is not only a fun task, but an essential one also. Do not just settle on a cake, because you cannot see anything like what you wanted. Shop around for the best offers and do not be afraid to ask the baker if they can work with your design and style, you

Photograph by Cathal Devlin might just be very surprised at how accommodating they can be. It is always wise to bring along cuttings of cakes you like and sketches of the style of cake you are looking for. Take samples of your dress, bouquet and bridesmaids colours to leave with the pastry chef. Ask the baker about additional costs, such as cake tops, pillars, columns and whether or not these items need to be returned to the

store. Also ask about the delivery process. Will the cake be set up at the reception by the baker or will the caterer have to do this? Once you have decided on a cake and a baker, get a contract in writing. There is no point agreeing aspects orally, make sure you have a written record of what you have ordered and are fully aware that the baker knows what you are looking for, this will avoid any nasty surprises on the day.

Flowers for the Big Day Northwest Express February, 2014

W

hen choosing wedding flowers, it is best to make appointments with more than one florist to view the arrangements they can offer you and compare them in terms of price, value and styles. Many churches will have a contract with a florist, so you need to be clear on this before you start booking. The wedding bouquet is an extremely important piece of the wedding ceremony, as its a focal point. There are many types of bouquet shapes you can choose

from, but the common three are; Cascade, Round and hand-tied bouquets. Cascading bouquets are great for slimming a bride's appearance, especially if a bride is worried about her hips. However, a round bouquet emphasize the body shape, so if the bride has a good figure, why not show if off! Smaller framed individuals generally opt for round bouquets as it will give the appearance of elevated height. Slender brides often go for a hand tied bouquet,

as it balances body shape. With style out of the way, next you will have to decide on the flowers themselves. While this is very exciting, for some brides, it can also be troublesome. 1 in 5 Irish people suffer from an allergy to pollen. Hay fever sufferers can find summer weddings a difficult experience, as there is so many flowers pollinating during the summer season. If a member of the wedding party suffer from hay fever, it is best to opt for either artificial flowers or for pollen free flowers such as Orchids, Calla Lilly or Roses. .Orchids petals appear to be very delicate but a re surprisingly robust and can withstand a lot of handling. Orchids are the picture of elegance and are great anytime of year. Tulips have long been another common option as they are pretty and elegant. Roses are the classic flowers for a bouquet and emanate radiance and grace. Calla Lilies are the latest trend and are a sophisticated choice. It has become a modern trend to mix white calla lilies with one black 'schwarzwalder' calla, as a striking vocal point. However, if hay fever is not a concern, your choice of flowers is endless. Why not opt for red Chrysantemum's which symbolise love or amaranths which are symbolic of fidelity. White and pink Lily flowers are a popular choice for summer weddings, while lilacs are often picked for spring weddings to bring a touch of violet to the bouquet. Brides often go for forget-me-not flowers as they are symbolic of true love and add a lovely touch of indigo to the bouquet, which in spring can look fantastic, mixed with white chrysanthums. If you are not a big lover of flowers, tulips are the best choice as they can be kept simple, without too much frills or foliage.

In terms of cost, the prices can vary from florist to florist, but a standard bouquet will set you back in the region of â‚Ź100. Bridesmaids bouquets can tally up to a similar cost, so its best to go into the florists with a budget in mind. A word of warning, in season flowers will dramatically reduce your flower bill, compared to ordering flowers that are out of season. A trend that is emerging in modern weddings is to use silk flowers. The idea behind using silk flowers is that many brides like the idea of being able to keep the bouquet as a keepsake. Silk wedding flowers are available from floristry shops or online and are a novel way of having lasting memories from your wedding day. Now that the bouquet is out of the way, you need to start thinking about other members of your wedding party. Corsages and buttonholes are great for groomsmen, while Boutonniere's are ideal for parents of the bride and groom and other members of

the family. They are a great way of including members of the family, that may not have a role in the ceremony also. Once you have all the people accounted for, you need to start thinking about the venue flowers. Since the altar will be the focal point of your ceremony, consider using the most elaborate and beautiful decorations on it. Many weddings now include flowers at the reception, as they bring the scents, the colour and the style of the marriage to the evening section of the wedding day. The mood you want to create for your guests can be your guide in helping you decide on appropriate floral arrangements for a wedding reception. Consider your dinner plan, will you need a flower centre piece for guest tables? for the cake stand? for the gift table? or for the dance floor edge? All of these will push up the overall costs, so choose wisely and cut out where flowers may not be needed, to help keep the cost down.

Signs of a Diva at Ballina Arts Centre

Celebrating the life of Delia Murphy - Ballina Arts Centre

O

L

iam Clancy, in talking about the importance of singer Delia Murphy, said that she was a pivotal figure who took up the Irish ballad and turned it into something of her own. She was the single most important person in preserving this form of music and enabling it to have the life and popularity it has today. Today Delia Murphy lives on through her songs, still played on Irish radio today and reissued on CDs. She continues to be cherished by all those who loved her singing and remember her from the innumerable occasions she graced the airwaves of Radio Éireann with her popular songs. She is not forgotten for her many recordings heard on gramophone and in dancehalls throughout Ireland and the wonderful concerts she sang in, both at home and abroad. Born in 1903 in Mount Jennings, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, Delia was the child of a wealthy family. Her father, born poor, made his fortunes in the Klondyke and Leadville mines and bought the big house when he came home. She was educated in Tuam Convent and later at University College Galway. She met and married Thomas Kiernan who began his diplomatic career when he was appointed Secretary to the Irish High Commissioner in London. From then on he was Director General of Radio Éireann and Ambassador in many countries, including the Vatican and the United States. Delia had her own indomitable personality and despite her husband’s postings, continued to make her songs popular through concerts, impromptu appearances and recordings. Well known songs of Delia include, If I were a Blackbird, The Spinning Wheel and Three Lovely Lassies but she is known and loved for many more and had a repertoire of hundreds. At Ballina Arts Centre, on Friday 21st February, at 8pm, Hello Delia Murphy will celebrate the life of this iconic singer in talk, story and song. The show is based around recollections of the life and times of Delia by her niece Carmen Cullen, and commentary on the pivotal role she played in the history of Irish

Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln. "We remain absolutely committed to developing a full family of vehicles that, like Focus, offer outstanding quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value." Ford now has two of the top five best-selling nameplates in the world - the Focus and Fiesta with a combined 1,402,555 vehicle registrations during the January through September 2013 period, based on Polk data. In addition to Focus being the best-selling passenger car nameplate title in China, Fiesta continues as the top-selling small car in Europe.

Focus buyers cite the vehicle's exterior styling and generous level of equipment as key reasons for their purchase. In China, the top differentiators among car intenders include the vehicle's design, excellent safety and high quality. Each of these attributes scored 15% to 40% higher among consumers than the closest competitor. "Our success with Focus serving more and more customers around the world underscores the strength of our One Ford plan," said Jim Farley, Ford

T

he Ford Focus continues to be the best-selling vehicle nameplate in the world, based on Ford's analysis of the latest Polk global vehicle registration data through the third quarter of 2013. S

ince the construction of the first sports car to bear the Porsche name (1948's '356'), Porsche has been regarded as one of the world's leading sports car manufacturers. But the company's history dates back to a much earlier period. In 1898, Ferdinand Porsche presented the 'EggerLohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton model' known as the 'P1' for short - the world's first Porsche design. After 116 years, the original and un-restored vehicle has been rediscovered and is set to enrich the collection at the Porsche Museum as a technical and historical worldwide sensation. The 'P1' now forms a centrepiece, which introduces visitors to the first part of the exhibition. Designed and built by Ferdinand Porsche, the 'P1' was one of the first vehicles registered in Austria, and took to the streets of Vienna on June 26, 1898. Porsche engraved the code 'P1' (standing for 'Porsche, number 1') on to all of the key components, thus giving the electric vehicle its unofficial name. The sheer volume of ideas realised within this vehicle remains remarkable even today. The highly compact electric drive, weighing just 130 kg, offered an output of 3hp. Yes, just 3hp. For short periods, up to 5hp could be achieved in overloading mode, allowing the P1 to reach speeds of up to 35 km/h. The overall range of the vehicle could span up to 80km, a considerable feat for a vehicle of that period. A further innovation was the Lohner-alternating vehicle body, which allowed the vehicle to be used in both summer and winter.

IFA PRESIDENT RAISES IRISH CONCERNS ON TRADE ISSUES WITH MINISTER RICHARD BRUTON

S

peaking after a meeting with Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton today (Wed), IFA President Eddie Downey highlighted the potential devastation that an unbalanced trade deal with Brazil would cause to our beef and pork sectors. “It makes no sense for Europe to progress this deal with Mercosur, and it would significantly damage the capacity of a TTIP deal with the US.” Eddie Downey said equivalence of standards and end-use control, and proper independent monitoring and testing, have to be central to any future trade deals that increase access into the EU for agricultural produce. He said the real concern for Irish agriculture and livestock farmers in relation to EU trade negotiations is the threat from future deals with Mercosur and the US, under TTIP. As the largest net beef exporter in the Northern Hemisphere, the potential damage to the Irish beef sector, from the current negotiations with the US and Mercosur, is very serious. He said the livelihoods of thousands of farm families, jobs and exports are on the line in these negotiations. Eddie Downey said the reality is the EU agreed a bad deal for agriculture with Canada, involving up to 50,000 tonnes of beef imports. “It’s now down to limiting the damage from this deal. The EU Commission must secure end-use control in managing the quota, instead of giving the Canadians free access on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. Our Government must insist on this from the Commission.” The IFA President said Irish farmers strongly reject the way the European Commission is using agriculture as its main bargaining chip in bilateral trade negotiations. “IFA is demanding that the Government and our MEPs fully defend the livestock sector by insisting there is no repeat of the massive access granted to Canada in the talks with Brazil and the US.” Eddie Downey said the IFA is very concerned that the EU Commission are about to exchange offers with Brazil on market access. He accused the Commission of having no real strategy on the trade negotiations and it appears they are willing to sacrifice agriculture, and particularly the beef sector, just to conclude a deal at any cost. The Commission would be showing a very weak hand to proceed to exchange an offer with Brazil when the TTIP talks with the US are intensifying. European producers and consumers will not accept food imports from countries where the use of hormones in beef, BST growth promoters in milk and beta-agonist drugs such as ractopamine in cattle and pigs is common practice. These are all banned in Europe. Eddie Downey said the Government cannot agree any trade deal without insisting on strict equivalence of standards on the critical issues of food safety, traceability, environmental protection and animal welfare.

O

LDER people who consume a diet very high in calories may be increasing their risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the memory loss and mental-function problems that sometimes precede Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study of more than 1,200 people in their 70s and 80s, Mayo Clinic researchers found that men and women who consumed at least 2,143 calories per day had more than double the odds of having MCI compared with those who consumed 1,526 calories per day or less. Federal health officials recommend that women over age 50 consume between 1,600 and 2,200 calories per day, depending on how physically active they are, and that men in the same age group aim for between 2,000 and 2,800 calories. But the guidelines

emphasize the importance of balancing calorie intake and physical activity in order to maintain a healthy weight, not specific calorie amounts. This emphasis on calorie balance points to a key limitation of the new study: Although Geda and his colleagues took into account extenuating factors such as body mass index, genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease, and medical history (including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes), they had no data on exercise and physical activity. Future studies will need to examine both sides of the calorie equation, Geda says. The study participants, all of whom hailed from Olmsted County, Minn., filled out a detailed questionnaire about their typical diet over the previous year. They also underwent a series of memory and cognitive tests. None had

dementia, but the researchers determined from the test results that 163 had MCI. MCI is “the gray zone between normal aging and dementia,” Geda says. “People with MCI are not demented [but] they are forgetful a little more than expected for their age.” This forgetfulness goes beyond senior moments (such as misplacing car keys), and might include forgetting airplane flights and other important appointments, he adds. Although it remains to be proven, there is a plausible scientific explanation for how overeating might erode mental function. Consuming a high-calorie diet may spur production of harmful, oxygen-containing molecules, and these so-called oxidative radicals may accumulate in cells and cause neurons to break down, Geda says.
