T has cost the Irish taxpayer almost €1.5 million. Yet, a second chance education scheme has failed to improve the employment prospects of participants, according to a study by the Economic and Social Research Institute. The Back To Education Allowance which was introduced in 1998 to help unemployed people return to either second or third level education as a stepping stone to getting back into the workforce, is turning out to be another poorly thought out plan which has cost a large sum to the Irish taxpayer. Last year alone, over 22,700 people availed of the allowance at a cost of €162.5m and the scheme has cost €1.49bn since its inception. However, the new report by the ESRI found there was no evidence that people who commenced an education programme in 2008 benefitted from improved employment outcomes up to last year. It actually found they were less likely to have found a job compared to unemployed people who did not avail of the scheme. BTEA participants who entered a course in September or October 2008 were found to be between 23pc and 38pc less likely to have exited unemployment by June 2012 and between 14pc and 29pc less likely than at the same time in 2014. Obviously, the scheme has proved very popular and spending on it trebled between 2007 and 2012, increasing from €64.1m to €199.5m per annum. Simultaneously, the numbers using it quadrupled from around 6,000 to almost 25,000. The report’s lead author, Dr Elish Kelly, said the evidence presented “raises concerns about the effectiveness of the BTEA scheme as an employment support programme for assisting jobseekers to transition from unemployment to employment.” Continued on Page 2

Award-winning Mayo Vinegars for Bite Food Festival

A

ward-winning Mayo vinegars fit for a Queen and two presidents will be showcased at the first annual Bite Food Festival at the RDS, between November 19-22. Ballina’s Wildwood Vinegars will be just one of the Irish artisan producers exhibiting at the major new food festival, which is expected to attract over 20,000 food and drink lovers. Bite 2015 will feature top chefs and food experts as well as a huge range of producers, who are there to sell, sample and educate people about their unique products. A must for food lovers, Bite 2015 will also feature tastings and demonstrations from chefs such as Donal Skehan and Domini Kemp as well as free cooking classes led by Lynda Booth of the Dublin Cookery School for adults and children alike. Fionntan Gogarty sidelined his artistic interests two years ago to grow the family business, which can already count England’s Queen Elizabeth II, American President Barack Obama, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins among its fans.

Fionntan Gogarty

The 25 different balsamics and vinegars are created through an infusion process using wild berries, blossom and herbs as well as flavours including blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, rosemary and dill. “It’s a unique niche Irish product which is exciting people and chefs can’t seem to get enough of it. What makes it so good is its authenticity and raw produce sources,” explained Fionntan. “Top chefs such as Nevin Maguire and Richard Corrigan are also using the products. Enda Kenny has brought the balsamic blackberry version to give to President Obama alongside the shamrock on St Patrick’s Day. “People don’t realise how diverse they are in dishes,” he added. Wildwood Vinegars has won a number of awards since its inception including gold at the Irish Times Artisan Food Competition and silver at this year’s Blas na hEireann. Presented by the organisers of the National Crafts and Design Fair, in association with Spar and Eurospar, the Festival promises to be Ireland’s first and foremost interactive food expo, with attractions for all the family.

Sligo IT Science Week explores how earth was used

IT Sligo archaeologist Shirley Markley engaged in building survey and recording on the remains of the 13th century earth mortared Kilteasheen Hall House at Knockvicar, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

T

HE use of clay and mud for building purposes is as old as the hills but how our ancestors used it is still “largely unrecognised and greatly under-appreciated,” according to IT Sligo archaeologist Shirley Markley. As its “Science Week” finale, IT Sligo will host an event on November 13th and 14th that will shed light on how earth was used in the past and its eco-friendly sustainable use today. “Earth Building Ireland 2015”, a conference with talks, field-trips and hands-on workshops, will explain ways in which earth has been used

through millennia on its own, in mud (cob) walls, often with straw and timber, and as a mortar for stone. Earthen construction is visible in our landscape from prehistoric burial mounds to medieval churches and in some modern homes. Earth Building UK & Ireland (EBUKI), the organisation behind the event, comprises earth building practitioners, architects, conservationists and others interested in promoting built heritage and its traditional skills, and their application in modern eco-friendly techniques such as “rammed earth”.

The opening address will be given by the EBUKI chairman Dr Dan Maskell, a research associate at the University of Bath. Joint organiser Shirley Markley says: “The use of earth in construction is largely unrecognised and greatly under-appreciated despite its documentation in archival resources and its identification in the archaeological record. Earth has played a significant role in construction from prehistoric times to the early modern period from territorial boundaries to burial mounds and in a plethora of building forms.” Sligo based architect Féile Butler, who is the other joint organiser, will also speak. She and her husband Colin Ritchie trained in the art of cob building and have built their own cob-and-timberframe home. Ms Butler is a member of the EBUKI executive board. The organisation now incorporates members in Ireland. The conference will hear lectures by Ireland’s and Britain’s leading earth building experts and participants can visit several earthen buildings, including Keeloges late

medieval church and graveyard, Ballaghnatrillick, near Cliffoney, Co Sligo. Ms Markley lectures in Medieval Archaeology at IT Sligo and is in her third year of doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin. She lives in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. She will detail findings from her extensive field surveys of more than 300 historic high status buildings in Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon. They throw new light on the early use of earth and earth mortar in construction, using sand, silt, clay and gravel mixed with water into a bonding agent. “In archaeology, earth is commonly looked on as a material of necessity used by the poorest people in society and it has come to be associated principally with 19th century Famine cabins and agricultural buildings. “However, my research shows that for centuries earlier, in the late Medieval Gaelic period, earth and earthen mortar was widely used as a material of choice by both the higher and lower classes for a variety of purposes. The Anglo-Normans, when they came into Ireland in 1169AD, built stone castles some of which used earth as the medium to hold the masonry together. “Gradually, the homes of the ‘ordinary people’ disappeared. However, the evidence of earth built and earth mortared masonry is still there in the remains of high status structures. Often, exterior lime mortar was used during their building or in later repair work.” Others speakers include master stone mason and author Patrick McAfee, Anna Meehan of the Heritage Council, and Hugh MacConville, whose photographs feature in the book “Ireland’s Earthen Houses” written by Frank McDonald and Peigin Doyle. Visit www.ebuk.uk.com for booking tickets and more information on the conference programme.

The passage she read from the book described recollections of her motherin-law, Nora Munnelly from Ballina, who she admired greatly. While Marie doesn’t know what the future holds she intends to live life to the full and is, undoubtedly, an inspiration to all in a similar situation. The support she is receiving from her husband, Gerry, four children, extended family and friends, is lovingly articulated in the book. “From Breast to Marrowbone”, a book by Ballinacarrow (Sligo) born Marie Monnelly, who is terminally ill with cancer, was launched last weekend in Ballina Pastoral Centre. The inspirational book commences with Marie’s experiences growing up in the Sligo village and the family trauma following the death of her mother from cancer when Marie was just 11. The bulk of the book chronicles her own experiences with cancer over a ten-year period following her diagnosis in 2005. Mary has worked as a primary teacher in various schools, principally in Dublin, for over 30 years and retired as a result of the diagnosis of her secondary cancer in 2013. She had obtained a degree in philosophy, history and psychology from UCD and a striking aspect of her book is the intermingling of some beautifullycrafted poetry with the

who are highly accomplished and renowned internationally is paramount to the ongoing success of the festival”, said Anne Marie Gibbons, MICF committee member. “Having a top panel of adjudicators sends a positive message to choirs considering our festival, particularly the International choirs, who rely on the experience of the panel of adjudicators as an indication of the quality of the festival, and that the competitions during the festival will be run in a professional and fair manner”. Chairman Edward Horkan stated that “this adds to what is already shaping up to be a fantastic festival for 2016, when we will celebrate our fifth birthday – already since earlier this year we have received strong interest from choral groups from Norway, the USA, England, Wales and Russia – having a top quality adjudication panel is vital to attracting choirs to participate in our festival.” Gabriella Thész is a graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary and has degrees in music education and choral conducting. From 1992 to 2012 she lectured in choral conducting at the Teacher’s Training Institute of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. loonloo National School has been nominated for an award at the upcoming FÍS Film Festival for their film “The Unknown Force”. The Sligo School is among 23 other schools that have been chosen from over 100 entries received from all over the country. The event was hosted by RTÉ’s Sinead Kennedy at the Helix, Dublin on 3 November. The FÍS Film Festival is a Department of Education and Skills initiative, which will see over 800 people attend on the day including 700 primary school children from all over the country, their teachers, parents and a variety of special guests. To enter the festival, primary schools across the country were asked to devise a five minute long film on a subject of their choice. The film had to be produced by the children and their teachers and entries are judged on imagination and creativity, the originality of the story, excellence in set design, costume design, film direction and production as well as the use of sound, acting and cinematography. Those that use special techniques such as animation or special effects

will be awarded extra points. Awards will be made in a wide variety of categories including Comedy, Acting, Storytelling, Adaptation, Animation, Special Effects, Direction, Costume, Editing, Production, Cinematography, Sound, Public Safety, Best Newcomer, Best Junior Class Production and Historical Adaptation, among others. The FÍS methodology empowers teachers and children to explore the medium of film and digital media in the primary curriculum. FÍS helps develop many different areas of the primary curriculum and in particular develops active learning, creative thinking, language, imagination, collaborative learning and problem solving skills as well as giving children hands-on experience of using technology as part of the film making process. FÍS is an initiative of the Department of Education and Skills that is coordinated by PDST Technology in Education in collaboration with the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT). It uniquely brings together 1st and 3rd level education as the primary school children

produce the films and the MA in Broadcasting students from the National Film School at the Inst. of Art, Design & Technology who are wholly responsible for the broadcasting of the films at the National FÍS Festival in the Helix on 3 November 2015. Schools from across the country will be able to stream the FÍS Film Festival live online, at the FÍS Film Festival website, www.fisfilmproject.ie. Seán Gallagher, Deputy Director, PDST, says: “We have been utterly overwhelmed by the quality of entries this year. The sheer quality made it very difficult to choose our 24 finalists, so hard luck to all the schools that weren’t shortlisted. FÍS is an excellent opportunity to showcase the various ways in which schools can use technology to benefit the holistic development of students and equip them with skills outside of the normal school syllabus. Students are developing their skill set by interacting with new technologies and software, editing and producing quality films while also learning to work together as part of a team. Well done to all the

schools who entered and looking forward to the awards ceremony on the 3rd of November!” Michael Heffernan, Principal at Cloonloo NS, said: “This is the first time we’ve entered the FÍS Film Festival. We’re really looking forward to attending on the day and seeing how all the students get on. It has been a very valuable learning experience using technology to promote education in its widest sense; creativity, discussion and teamwork.” RTE’s Sinead Kennedy is looking forward to hosting the event this year and she says she can’t wait to meet all of the finalists: “The FÍS Film Festival is such an inspiring and heartwarming event which every year showcases the amazing creativity of school children from all over Ireland. I am really looking forward to meeting all the talented film makers and their teachers this year and presenting them with their awards, congratulations to all!” Further information on is available from: www.fisfilmproject.ie

Helen, a keen photographer, began to compile an extensive collection of photographs of local and island people in Mayo, capturing their way of life and the environment that surrounded them, and she continued to do so to the next decade. Over the next half century, the Mayo photographs were absorbed into a wider collection of almost 20,000 photographs taken by Helen throughout her life. Since her death in 1993, practically nothing has been done with the collection except to have several small exhibits of her existing prints. Ernie and Helen’s youngest son, Cormac O’Malley, recently rediscovered the collection and Mayo negatives and decided to collate the information from a fresh perspective. Western Ways is the result of this effort and also includes a small number of images taken by Ernie himself that have never been published before. Western Ways will be of interest to anyone who cares about the cultural history of western Ireland or, more generally, an Ireland that has since disappeared into the mists of time. Available nationwide. RRP €19.00.

he new book, Western Ways, by Cormac O’Malley and Juliet Christy Barron, just released by Mercier press, provides a fascinating picture of rural life in parts of Mayo in the early part of the 20th century. The quality production is a collection of hauntingly captured photographs by Helen Hooker and Ernie O’Malley that reveal the rural life of Ireland as it existed in the late 1930s – early 1940s, along with excerpts from Ernie’s writings on Mayo and an extensively researched explanatory text to provide a fascinating picture of the people of Mayo, their daily existence and the rugged, but beautiful landscape and seascape that shaped their lives. In 1938 Castlebar-born Irish Republican Ernie O’Malley returned home to Mayo to live with his American wife, artist Helen Hooker as they wanted to give their children a rural life close to the land and sea. They made their home at Burrishoole Lodge, near Newport on the northern shore of Clew Bay and during the Emergency years began to farm their land as well as record life in rural Ireland.

Shameless glamour model enrolled in uni just to get £14k student loan for plastic surgery

T

he feeling of your student loan landing in your bank account is one that everyone who’s been to uni will miss. It’s (practically) free money to be used on tuition fees, books and of course going out. But while most students see it as a benefit to their student life, Catherine saw it as an investment for the future. he 29-year-old decided she would use her student loan on something more useful than education – a £3,600 breast enlargement operation. Catherine Byrne, who was 22 at the time, blew £14,000 on surgery, Botox and fillers, after only one month of being at university. She had applied to study psychology at the University of East London but says she had absolutely no intention of studying or getting a degree. Catherine, from Essex,

told the Sun: ‘At first I was shocked when I got in. I quickly applied for a student loan and was over the moon when I got my loan letter in the post. ‘I already knew exactly what I was going to spend the money on.’ She had to attend lectures for the first two weeks, but while her friends were buying books, she was planning where she would have her operation. She said: ‘As soon as the money hit my account I booked in to have a breast enlargement in London and I quit my course. ‘I suddenly had loads more confidence and no longer felt insecure about the way I looked. It made me even more sure of my decision to use the money to invest in my body instead of my brain. ‘I told my family and friends what I had done and they just laughed. They all know I’m always finding ways to get what

I want — I don’t think they were surprised.’ Yet the operation wasn’t enough for the Essex girl. Soon after, Catherine used the rest of her loan on £560 Botox injections in her face and collagen to plump up her lips. Catherine failed her year, unsurprisingly, but saw this as a positive because it allowed her to convince tutors to take her back, so she could apply for another year of loans. After using the excuse that she was ‘overwhelmed’ in first year, her tutors gave her another chance, and she received a further £7,000 in the bank. She also spent the money on clothes and a new car, without even having to go to campus, and said that it would have been a ‘waste to spend it on boring books.’ She added: ‘I’m the one who has really invested in my future

because having the enlargement operation has made me happier every single day. ‘If I was going to have all that debt, I may as well have had something to show for it.’ Catherine has been left with a huge £17,572 debt that she

will have to pay back if and when she earns more than £17,000 a year. But the glamour model doesn’t see herself earning enough to pay it back so is hoping that after 25 years it will be written off. While the world still reels from last week’s ‘discovery’ of a baby polar bear on Mars, eagle-eyed UFO spotters have found something far more sinister. An alien drone, piloted by Martians! We should point out at this point that UFO Sightings Daily admits there’s been a certain amount of ‘enhancement’ in this image (ie it looks a lot more like a rock in the original NASA pic). YouTuber Paranormal Crucible says, ‘The anomaly – which appears to be the result of intelligent design – was photographed by the Rover as it surveyed the area around rock nest at Gale Crater. ‘In my opinion this object is an extraterrestrial drone possibly built by the indigenous Martian populace or perhaps it was deployed by an off world alien species who were exploring the martian surface.’

Doctors could soon diagnose cancer using just a drop of blood

Paramedic suspended without pay after trying to save girl choking on sandwich

A

US paramedic has been suspended without pay after stopping his ambulance to try and save the life of

a choking girl without prior authorisation. Qwasie Reid, an Emergency Medical Technician, was transporting an elderly

Alien drone ‘built by Martians’ is seen crashed on Mars

patient from a nursing home to a doctor’s appointment in New York, when a ‘frantic man’ near a school in Brooklyn urged him to help save the life of a choking student. Mr Reid ignored his partner’s advice to stay in the ambulance, and instead rushed to help the seven-year-old, who had started choking on a sandwich. WABC-TV reports that Mr Reid ‘cleared out the little girl’s mouth, put an oxygen mask on her, used a defibrillator and started CPR.’ Mr Reid also told the TV station how little Noelia Echavarria was ‘blue in the face and lips’ when he first arrived, as no one had administered first aid. But he has now been suspended without pay by employers Assist Ambulance Company – as the firm forbids paramedics from making unauthorised stops. Speaking to DNAInfo, Mr Reid said he would ‘do it again’, even if he risked being fired. ‘As an EMT, I don’t care about your money’, he said. ‘There was a child choking. I’m worried about them firing me, but I did a good deed. I just feel like I’m being penalised for something and I haven’t done anything wrong. Tragically, Noelie died in hospital on 23 October after doctors turned off life support.

Researchers are working on a groundbreaking new technique that would save time, money, and trauma for the patient. Currently, most cancers are detected using scans and tissue biopsies. A team of scientists at the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam discovered that the platelets in cancer patients’ blood contains unique genetic markings. Their findings, published in the medical journal Cancer Cell, show it could be possible to differentiate between people who have cancer and those who don’t with almost 95 per cent certainty. Lead researcher Dr Tom Würdinger and his team studied blood samples from more than 200 cancer patients, with varying diagnoses and prognoses. They were able to establish not only the presence of cancerous cells, but also what type of cancer they had and if it had spread to other areas of their bodies. The scientists were able to identify the origin of the primary tumour with 71 per cent accuracy, from six different types of tumours – breast, colorectal, pancreatic, glioblastoma and hepatobiliary cancers, and non-small cell lung carcinoma. ‘We are working on an efficient blood test,’ Dr Würdinger said. ‘This is expected to be available in 2020. ‘The newly developed technique has been tested on the most common tumour types and is widely applicable.’ The research is still in the experimental phase, but there are hopes it could prove to be a major breakthrough in cancer diagnosis.

Get the Glowing Look

W

hether you are going it alone or enlisting the help of a professional, wedding make up is very important for any bride. A bride's base should be as sheer as possible and this can be helped by arranging a course of facials in the run up to a wedding, which will not only pay dividends in the appearance of the skin and can be relaxing also. Match the foundation to the skin on the jaw line. A good foundation should melt seamlessly into the skin and show no tell tale signs. Do not apply heavy amounts of make up, the foundation should only be used to cover over blemishes. Remember the brides face should look as as natural as possible and not overly made up. However, you will need to apply foundation on the neck, ears and chest to ensure the bride does not look like a painted face. Use pearlised powder to give the skin a glow. Brush the powder over the face with a large bristled brush. Do not use too much oil based products that can make your skin shiny. While shiny skin can look great, it will show up in the photos. Use blusher to give a glow and simultaneously create structure and definition for successful photographs. Use natural shades on the eyelids, such as browns, golds,

smokey shades and shimmery silver. Natural and light shades will make the eyes look bigger in photographs. Use a sable brush to apply the eye shadow. Do not apply heavy eye-liner, even if you normally wear heavy liner. The eye-liner is there to give your eye definition. Remember to wear water-proof mascara on the day. While water-proof mascara is heavier on the lashes, you just never know when tears will flow, so to avoid disaster, make sure you have it on your lashes! As tempting as lip gloss is, its best avoided on your wedding day, as a flick of the veil on the glossy lips, could be disastrous. Professionals recommend opting for a lipstick instead, that can be applied with a soft lip brush. Do not go for bold and dramatic colours, opt for browns, pinks and subtle shades. Choose lip-liner that blends easily with your lipstick.

Whether you are doing the make up yourself or getting a helping hand, make sure to have a trial run up to two weeks before the wedding. The trial run will give you an idea of what you will look like on the day. If you decide on a look on the trial run, stick to it on the day. Do not go changing the look drastically on the day, because the mood takes you! It is also very important to have a back-up plan, just in case something goes wrong. A back up plan should be made to stop mayhem if the make up artist fails to show up or if your skin breaks out into a horrible rash! Your plan B has to be viable within the time frame also. On the day itself, it is wise to have some make up items in your hand bag, such as; concealer applicator, lipstick, mascara and make up removal pads, just in case, you need to fix up problem areas.

Choosing the Perfect Bridal Gown than you really are. Avoid a sheath style dress as it will make you look shorter than you actually are. It is also advisable to avoid high necks or halter necks, which make shoulders appear narrow, and as a result do not flatter that waistline. If you are small all over, avoid the ballerina/full skirt style of dress as it will make your bust look smaller than it actually is. Tall If you are tall, a sheath style dress or column dress will flatter your figure and frame. The Column dress hugs the figure and will give you the catwalk look. Avoid an empire line dress as it lengthens the body even more. Go for a dress with short sleeves, as it will break up the line and make your arms appear smaller than they are. A dipped neckline can be very complimentary to a taller woman with a small to medium sized bust. It will give a hint of cleavage but not enough to be described as 'booby' and is perfect for people who may be worried about showing too much. However it is good to remember that skin is sexy. This is your day to shine, so do not shy away. A dipped neckline dress can also be good for hiding fleshy under arms.

O

n your wedding day, you’re the star. Of course you want to look like it, all the while feeling comfortable in your own skin and of course your dress. Often brides spent more time choosing their wedding dress, than choosing the husband. While dress shopping can be very exciting, it can prove very difficult. Choosing a wedding dress that will impress is not a job you can do overnight, it takes hours of 'trying on' and browsing through magazines for ideas. A wedding gown is one that you will remember for the rest of your life, so make it be extra special. Not only has it to suit your figure and your skin tone, it also has to fit in with your personality. Before you go out shopping, take some time to establish the look or looks that you like and ask the sales advisor for them styles, to save you a lot of time and effort, sorting through dress styles you simply won't wear. Sales advisors will appreciate that you know what you are looking for and will work hard to find the dress that meets those wants. Dress shopping When you do decide to go dress shopping, make sure you wear the correct underwear, because you will be spending a lot of time showing it to random strangers. It is best to bring a shoe with a heel similar to the size of the heel you will be wearing on the day, so you can gain an idea of how much to take off your dress. Beware of bringing your mother with you when trying on dresses, as most mothers tend to get emotional and shed a tear at each fitting, commenting; “that's the one”, “no that is the one”, “no

wait, I think this one is perfect”. If she tends to do this on your first day shopping for a dress, consider bringing your future mother in law on the second, she at least will be completely honest with you. Even if you come away from a day at a bridal boutique, feeling like you have not accomplished anything or seen anything you like, fear not, you have at least seen what the store had to offer and will be able to eliminate certain styles. It will also give you an idea of what styles to head hunt for in the future. Be careful not to hastily buy a dress that is a fashion fad. After all you want a dress that is timeless and elegant, so when you look back on your photos in the years to come, you won't think 'what was I wearing?' When picking a dress, keep in mind the time of year. If you are having a Christmas wedding, make sure your dress is heavy and maybe purchase a shrug, so that you do not freeze, when it comes to posing for photographers. If it is a summer wedding, opt for a light material dress, so that you do not over heat! The biggest mistake that a bride to be can often make is ordering a size smaller than they actually are in the hope that they will fit into it by the time the wedding day comes. It often happens that a bride fails to ditch the weight in time and has to fork out a small fortune on letting the dress out. The same can happen if you lose weight. While you may be overjoyed that you have slimmed down, you may not be so happy when you see how much it will cost you to get the dress taken in. Slender and curvy Halter-neck tops expose beautiful

shoulders and well-toned arms. The halter-neck top echoes the lower half of the dress, so if you have slim hips the halter-neck will be an excellent counterpoint. A mermaid shape dress is ideal for curvy girls with balanced hip and bust measurements. It will bring out the Marilyn Monroe in you. If you want Hollywood glamour, this is undoubtedly it. Strapless dresses look fantastic on slim women with a medium bust. Strapless dresses can be very elegant if you have a long neck, good shoulders and well-toned arms. Big Busted Well endowed women ought not to go for strapless dresses, as it will only put all the attention on one area. Instead, a large busted woman should look at off the shoulder dresses, which move the attention away from the chest and onto the shoulders. Corsets or bodices are great choice for big busts, as it hides the bad bits and highlights the good bits. If you have a slim-hipped figure and a full bust, a ball gown will balance top and bottom perfectly, giving you that "fairy-tale bride" look. The good news is that a V-line dress can look fantastic on a well endowed woman. The V-Line style plunges to the bust and is complimentary to cleavage. Petite Your main goal with a square body shape is to find a dress that gives the illusion of curves. A fuller skirt and a lot of details at the bust area, with a V at the front or back, will create the illusion of a smaller waistline. The A-line dress will also give the illusion that you are taller

Bottom heavy If you have concerns about your hips, perhaps a two piece would be a good option. An A-line skirt lengthens the body. Long sleeve dresses can look great on people with wider hips, as it draws attention to your upper body. Long

sleeves will also conceal larger arms, and cover square shoulders, provided that they are loose rather than close fitting. Long sleeves will also save you from getting goose bumps if you have a winter wedding. Full figure If you have a full figure, an A-line dress will lengthen the whole body and move the focus away from the waistline. An 'Empire waist' dress is perfect for those who are concerned about their figure, as it is narrowest below the bust and conceal the hips and waistline. Colour If you are not a big fan of white, or just feel that you won't be able to pull it off, then consider going for ivory, cream, champagne or a dress with a tint. You also can look at coloured dresses, to take a less traditional approach to the wedding attire. The key thing to remember is to make sure you choose a shade that makes you stand out. In other words, avoid colors close to your skin tones. For example, if the tone of your skin is yellow, it is wise to avoid ivory wedding dresses. Ivory wedding dresses will make you fade away. Similarly, those with very fair skin should better not purchase a pure white wedding dress. It will drain the person's look and will not flatter their skin tones. People with darker skins find it easier to purchase a suitable wedding dress, since most of the white ones can flatter their skins.

Flowers for the Big Day W

hen choosing wedding flowers, it is best to make appointments with more than one florist to view the arrangements they can offer you and compare them in terms of price, value and styles. Many churches will have a contract with a florist, so you need to be clear on this before you start booking. The wedding bouquet is an extremely important piece of the wedding ceremony, as its a focal point. There are many types of bouquet shapes you can choose from, but the common three are; Cascade, Round and hand-tied bouquets. Cascading bouquets are great for slimming a bride's appearance, especially if a bride is worried about her hips. However, a round bouquet emphasize the body shape, so if the bride has a good figure, why not show if off! Smaller framed individuals generally opt for round bouquets as it will give the appearance of elevated height. Slender brides often go for a hand tied bouquet, as it balances body shape. With style out of the way, next you will have to decide on the flowers themselves. While this is very exciting, for some brides, it can also be troublesome. 1 in 5 Irish people suffer from an allergy to pollen. Hay fever sufferers can find summer weddings a difficult experience, as there is so many flowers pollinating during the summer season. If a member of the wedding party suffer from hay fever, it is best to opt for either

artificial flowers or for pollen free flowers such as Orchids, Calla Lilly or Roses. .Orchids petals appear to be very delicate but a re surprisingly robust and can withstand a lot of handling. Orchids are the picture of elegance and are great anytime of year. Tulips have long been another common option as they are pretty and elegant. Roses are the classic flowers for a bouquet and emanate radiance and grace. Calla Lilies are the latest trend and are a sophisticated choice. It has become a modern trend to mix white calla lilies with one black 'schwarzwalder' calla, as a striking vocal point. However, if hay fever is not a concern, your choice of flowers is endless. Why not opt for red Chrysantemum's which symbolise love or amaranths which are symbolic of fidelity. White and pink Lily flowers are a popular choice for summer weddings, while lilacs are often picked for spring weddings to bring a touch of violet to the bouquet. Brides often go for forget-me-not flowers as they are symbolic of true love and add a lovely touch of indigo to the bouquet, which in spring can look fantastic, mixed with white chrysanthums. If you are not a big lover of flowers, tulips are the best choice as they can be kept simple, without too much frills or foliage. In terms of cost, the prices can vary from florist to florist, but a standard bouquet will set you back in the region of â‚Ź100.

Bridesmaids bouquets can tally up to a similar cost, so its best to go into the florists with a budget in mind. A word of warning, in season flowers will dramatically reduce your flower bill, compared to ordering flowers that are out of season. A trend that is emerging in modern weddings is to use silk flowers. The idea behind using silk flowers is that many brides like the idea of being able to keep the bouquet as a keepsake. Silk wedding flowers are available from floristry shops or online and are a novel way of having lasting memories from your wedding day. Now that the bouquet is out of the way, you need to start thinking about other members of your wedding party. Corsages and buttonholes are great for groomsmen, while Boutonniere's are ideal for parents of the bride and groom and other members of the family. They are a great way of including members of the family, that may not have a role in the ceremony also. Once you have all the people accounted for, you need to start thinking about the venue flowers. Since the altar will be the focal

point of your ceremony, consider using the most elaborate and beautiful decorations on it. Many weddings now include flowers at the reception, as they bring the scents, the colour and the style of the marriage to the evening section of the wedding day. The mood you want to create for your guests can be your guide in helping you decide on appropriate

floral arrangements for a wedding reception. Consider your dinner plan, will you need a flower centre piece for guest tables? for the cake stand? for the gift table? or for the dance floor edge? All of these will push up the overall costs, so choose wisely and cut out where flowers may not be needed, to help keep the cost down.

How to Save Money on Your Wedding Ceremony & Reception

You are getting married and want a beautiful event, yet you need to stick to a tight budget. This is a problem that faces many brides. Don't worry; there are ways to have your dream wedding without breaking the bank

1 Prioritize! Make a list of the most important things you want for your wedding and have your fiancé do the same. Are you most committed to having gorgeous flowers, inviting 400 people, hosting the wedding at a particular location, or serving filet mignon and lobster? Knowing your priorities before the planning starts will help you decide what to spend money on, and what you don't mind doing cheaply or doing without. 2 Trim the guest list. This is difficult but sometimes necessary if the cost per guest is going to break your budget. Cross off names on the list of guests who might feel obligated to come to the wedding if they are invited,

but would not have their feelings hurt if they are not asked to attend. Think of inviting only relatives with whom you have a close relationship instead of everyone related to you. Invite only the people who are important to you and your parents, rather than everyone you know.

3 Reduce the number of people in your bridal party. You have to buy nice gifts for every member of your bridal party, and that adds up. Plus, traditionally, the entire bridal party plus their dates are invited to the rehearsal dinner. Seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen, all their dates, ring bearer and flower girls, and their families, plus both sets of parents and all the readers in the ceremony, plus officiant could add up to 40+ people to feed! 4 Have your wedding ceremony and reception held at a hotel, and ask for

discounts when family and friends are staying at same hotel. Reserve a block of rooms for your guests several months before the wedding for the best rates. Speak with the appropriate manager when asking for discounts and reserving rooms. 5 Stick to the schedule for your ceremony and reception. Musicians will charge more if asked to perform beyond the time stated in their contract. You will also incur additional limo charges if your event runs longer than planned.

6Ask friends to lend their talents by helping out with such things as invitations, flowers, and programs. Ask a friend with pretty penmanship to address your invitations instead of hiring a calligrapher. If you simplify your flowers and arrangements, perhaps a friend can assemble fresh or silk flowers which will save you hundreds of euros.

Some of the most attractive wedding programs are printed from a home computer and then creatively assembled with coloured cardboard, tissue paper, ribbon, etc.

7 Consider having your wedding any day but Saturday. Fridays are also popular wedding days but may cost a lot less than a Saturday event. For even greater savings, choose a weekday evening for your wedding. Schedule the wedding to allow guests time to arrive at the ceremony after the work day has ended. Many guests enjoy weekday weddings as this frees up their weekends for other activities. Choose a date between November and April (between May and October if you live in the southern hemisphere) to avoid higher peak season rates in many areas. 8 Professionally posed and

properly lighted photographs are one of the few beautiful keepsakes you'll have from your special day, but getting them doesn't have to break the bank. Choose an EXPERIENCED photographer who will include ALL OF THE IMAGES ON A CD for one low price. Then you can make as many inexpensive copies as you need rather than pay a huge reprint fee to the photographer. Also, consider a private prewedding encounter for the bride and groom followed by all of the posed photography. Completing everything before your wedding means you can spend the entire remainder of your day enjoying yourself and the company of your guests. (Guests can't stand to be kept waiting between the wedding and the reception.)

9 After looking at the final plan of your wedding, but before paying any deposits,

Northwest Express November, 2015

decide where you can simplify the whole process. Consider whether you really need choral singers and a string quartet at the ceremony and a wedding singer and a DJ at the reception. Releasing doves or butterflies or having a candle-lighting ceremony are all wonderful, but may end up costing a lot of money. Simplicity saves money and if done well, your wedding may seem more serene and awe-inspiring. 10 Remember that the wedding is one day at the start of a life-long commitment. Look beyond the wedding day to the goals you will have as newlyweds. If you want to purchase a house in the next few years, keeping that as a priority throughout the wedding planning process will help you to be prudent about how much you spend on that one day.

Who Invited This Lot? Weddings Guide, 14

Y

ou’re getting married! It’s set to be the best day of your life. You’ve sorted the venue, the caterers, even the dress. But what about the allimportant guest list? Once you’ve jumped the ‘his guests vs yours’ ratio hurdle, the reality of the situation hits home. Your nearest, dearest and frankly, weirdest will all be together in one room and, whoa, what a potent mix that is. But rest assured, without this motley crew of hangers-on, drunkards and odd bods, your big day wouldn’t be nearly as special, or indeed, as memorable…

Northwest Express November, 2015

room: he’s either holding court with jokes about STDs, or doing tequila slammers with your teetotal uncle. Or worst of all, he’s miming a crude anecdote from the stag do. But come on: isn’t that what the Best Man’s speech is for?

THE FOB

THE WANNABE DJ

THE GROOVER The natural counterpart to the

Wannabe DJ: a mal-coordinated, middle-aged whirling dervish causing indiscriminate chaos across the dance floor. And seemingly unaware of the danger he poses – whether ‘bopping’, ‘jiving’, ‘doing the worm’, grabbing random females to swing round precariously, way too close to the wedding cake, or performing his own terrifyingly literal interpretation of breakdancing. In short: the kind of man the producers of You’ve Been Framed have been dreaming of for years.

This is where your day could go a bit ‘Pete Tong’. For some people, the traditional wedding soundtrack of Abba, Sinatra and then ‘something faster for you young ones’ just doesn’t cut it. Which explains why this guy will be stood in the disco booth all night, drunkenly flicking through his iPod to show the nonplussed actual DJ some obscure Prodigy Bside that is ‘absolutely 100% totally guaranteed to get this place bangin’, man.’ That may be so – but shall we wait until they’ve finished the speeches?

Of course he’s invited; it would be rude not to. Especially considering he’s paid for at least some of it. Which explains why he’s wandering round all day with a slightly furrowed, dazed expression. Because not only is he letting go of the apple of his eye (you), he’s being forced to deliver a speech and display actual emotion. He also gets to watch a load of people he either a) doesn’t know, or b) has never liked, guzzle their way through £10,000 that he’d previously earmarked for a new conservatory. That’s exactly why you should love him even more

THE ELIGIBLE BACHELOR

THE WEEPER

THE BITTER DIVORCEE

THE TOTAL LAD

Weddings, as any fool knows, are occasions of dignified celebration. But – uh-oh – one fool didn’t get the memo. You can tell from the guffawing at the back of the

poppingly stunning. Hence the patch of silence that follows her around the room, as middle-aged men unaccustomed to seeing attractive young women close-up stop talking and just gawp hopelessly. Until being roundly busted by their own better half.

Did you detect a snorting sound during the ceremony? Perhaps a sarcastic cackle during the vows – or a cautionary shake of the head when the groom said ‘I do’? Don’t worry if you didn’t: the Bitter Divorcee will be available all night to pour scorn on the concepts of marriage, fidelity and love for anyone within earshot of the bar. Until 9pm, that is, when she drunkenly makes a desperate, thunderous pitch to grab the bouquet, knocks over a toddler and skids headlong into the cake.

Sure, weddings can be emotionally overwhelming. For the bride, groom and close family, certainly. But what, pray tell, is the matter with this woman? This distant auntie or family friend who can’t help staring at you with happy, glistening eyes, holding your face lovingly as she offers banal… advice… in … halting… sentences. Before she chokes into her handkerchief and is led away to pull herself together in the lobby. THE HOTTIE File her under ‘a little something for the dads’: your beautiful friend from work/university who – annoyingly – never fails to turn up to social soirees looking slim, immaculately dressed and eye-

Invitations don’t come more winwin than this: ‘Hey, Dave! Come to our wedding – there’ll be a free bar and loads of single women!’ But not even in his wildest dreams did he think he’d get this level of whispered, pointy attention. Because only now has the realisation struck: on this day of romance, commitment and high emotion, he’s the only person for 30 square miles who’s both single and in possession of a Ychromosome. And who’s not your weird, squinty Uncle Pete. THE AWKWARD TEENAGER He’s grown up! Isn’t he supposed to be, like, six years old? Seemingly not: since you last set eyes on your cousin, he’s apparently stopped wearing Spider-Man pyjamas and has instead blossomed into a lanky, acne-flecked beanpole with a mouth so full of dental braces that he looks like he might actually be gargling paperclips. And now forced to wear uncomfortable nylon trousers for the day, he can only mumble shyly and blush a vivid shade of puce when one of your bridesmaids – the one with the impressive cleavage – walks past.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY The perennial wedding mystery: why so many brides and grooms invite a former squeeze. True, you might still be ‘good friends’. And nothing else quite proves the sanctity of your vows than having a guest at the ceremony who has also seen you naked (parents notwithstanding, obviously). But come on: you know the real reason. There’s no better way of saying to that ex: ‘Hey – look at what you could have had, and now never will!’ THE RELLY YOU DON’T KNOW The fact that even your mum’s face has gone blank says it all. With his scruffy beard and rumpled suit he seems friendly – and he certainly appears to know everyone’s name. But who exactly is this man sipping champagne, demolishing the hors d’oeuvres and wishing you well? Who cares? One more guest equals one more gift, right? THE DRUNK The cast-iron rule of weddings since prehistoric times: there’s always one. One perennially single girl who ruins all chance of romance by downing five glasses of bubbly on an empty stomach and sliding off the bar before being put to bed by 8pm. Or one perennially single man who quietly drinks himself into a stupor during the speeches, then clumsily tries to dirty-dance with an auntie before falling asleep next to the speaker. Indeed, it’s a shame you never get both at the same time; they’d probably make a lovely couple. THE BAFFLED GRANNY Snatched from her one-bed bungalow and wheeled out for the reception, it’s the family matriarch. Ancient, shrivelled, smelling faintly of mothballs – and visibly confused, as she peers at the procession of ever-younger relatives she’s only dimly aware of ever meeting before. Or stares blankly at a dance floor filled with people cavorting to Lordknows-what racket while someone spoon-feeds her trifle. Until 7pm, that is, when she’s deemed to be ‘tired’ and wheeled back to the care home, where… Hang on. What do you mean we ‘took the wrong grandma’?

Pink is back!

H

ey there, lucky bride! A new year is nearly here, ushering in a new swoon-worthy wedding season. We searched the internet to see what is big in America and everyone agrees: 2015 will be the year of true romance. Weddings are going softer, sweeter, lusher and more heartfelt. It’s a return to classic chivalry, to the things that made our mothers cry, and it’s happening just in time for you to melt hearts and make memories. 1.Pink is back! Do you already feel like a blushing bride? Carry that sweet love over to your colour scheme, says Tara Guérard, the event designer behind ultraluxe Soirée in Charleston and New York. "It’s the nudes, the blushes, the peaches — not Pepto Bismol pink!" she announces. 2. The return to romance ushers in a new love for the formality of days gone by. Think whitegloved waiters and big band dancing, crystal candlesticks and gold-rimmed china. One major bridal inspiration for the return to tradition comes from Hollywood. Her brides are still falling hard for the bubbly, approachable elegance of the Roaring Twenties

3. but throw out the hard-edged looks. “Chevron was big last year,” says Tara, “but now I’m seeing trellis-patterns, bold stripes and florals.”

over the moon for heat on the menu. “We using a lot of Calabrian chili oil, a lot of sriracha — and are seeing guests reach first for the spicy things on the menu.”

4. Lush, soft, Exquisitely romantic — the flower of the year is the many-petaled tree peony, says New York’s Ariella Chezar, whose work has been seen at the White House. Amber Gustafson of Los Angeles’s Amber Events picks a similar bloom — the sweetsmelling garden rose.

8. The favourite service style to capture this year’s approachable elegance? While the waiters might be wearing black dinner jackets and white gloves, they’re presenting food family style. “It’s more interactive when everyone helps themselves,” says Morris Kitchen's Karina Seljak.

5. The flower garland is back in a big way. Ariella loves citrus garlands for bars and over doorways — lemons, limes, oranges on the stem. “And fern garlands are really beautiful. I love them down the center of a long table.”

9. Adorable little freehand illustrations will adorn invitations everywhere this year. Melinda Morris of Lion In the Sun, a paperie boutique in Brooklyn, New York, tells us that these invites are completely custom, so if you can dream it, an artist can help you bring your vision to life.

6. And in the sweetest trend of all, invitations this year are getting small. The most requested look is for an invitation smaller than the standard 5x7 — something little, dainty and infinitely precious. 7.2015 is the year to get spicy. Elizabeth reports that brides are

10. In 2015, your cake will shine! Cheryl Kleinman of Betty Bakery says the look ranges from a fairy dusting of very fine glitter on the top tiers, to wild disco ball sparkle.. 11. "Right now flavour is very In 2015, your cake will shine!

driven by season," explains Cheryl. In the summer, choose a lemon cake with lemon flavor. In the winter, brides are looking for chocolate cakes with rich accents of mocha or praline. 12. Music that fits your theme. New York society bandleader Alex Donner says his clients are requesting music to go along with wedding themes ranging from films (The Great Gatsby) to locales (like France — all songs were performed in French!). 13. The element of surprise. Stick to songs that your guests know and love but mix up the musical styles. "Think a bluegrass band playing ‘Hava Nagila’ or a string quartet playing Coldplay," says bandleader Amber Gustafon. 14. Looking for a chic wildcard idea? Forgo reception favours altogether for a “pillow present,” a little welcome gift left for guests at their hotel. Choosing the Wedding Cake Weddings Guide, 20

W

hen it comes to planning a wedding, few decisions are as delightful as choosing your wedding cake. After all, what could be better than sampling slice after slice of delicious cake. The cake is one of the most prevalent symbols of your wedding. It will feature prominently in your wedding pictures and it will be a focal point for your guests when they arrive at the reception hall. Your cake can pull together your colours and wedding theme in one beautiful and delicious package. When it comes to choosing a wedding cake, you must first consider what it is you are looking for? Do you want a traditional ivory tiered cake? a modern chocolate and vanilla cake or fruit flavoured art piece? Whether you are utterly clueless to what you want or have a good idea of the style of cake you want, next you must visit bakers to see what they can offer you. This task must be done in good time (approximately 4 months before the big day itself). You should visit two or three bakers and ask to see their portfolio. This will help you determine if you like the bakers style. In order to ascertain what size cake you will need, consider how many guests you will have in attendance. Remember, the bigger the cake, the more

Northwest Express November, 2015

expensive it will be. One way of saving money is to order a smaller cake for display at the reception and two sheet cakes that can be cut and placed on plates in the kitchen and served to the guests. The sheet cake can be considerably plainer than the cake on display. This saves a huge cost and still means you get to show off a cake! When considering the shape and size of the cake. Traditional round and square cakes are still very popular and easy to cut. Look through wedding magazines and bakers samples to find a wedding cake design that dazzles you! The cake's design should match the aesthetic of the day. A formal wedding generally calls for a structured, multi-layer cake. For a less formal wedding, you can embrace the unconventional cake. Multiple tiers allows you to offer several kinds of cake each level can be different, offering something for everyone. So if the bride is a fan of cheesecake, but the groom is a big fan of fruit cake, you can now have both in one cake. A common combination includes one tier - mouse filled cake, one tier fruit, one tier chocolate and vanilla cake, frosted with butter cream frosting or rolled fondant. Icing traditionally comes in either a

simple sugar recipe or rich cream cheese variety and usually is white or ivory, but more contemporary approaches involve other colours. If you wearing ivory or champagne, let the baker know and they can tint the icing accordingly. Remember, anything goes from dark chocolate to pale pastels, with modern wedding cakes. They tend to be decorated to match the bride's lace pattern on her gown or even the bouquet. Some couples design the cake around the decor or theme of the wedding. Brides often go for lace, embroidery applique or elegant drapes. Common features include; ruffles, bows, swirls and ribbons formed from pastiage and blown sugar. Cakes can also be garnished with real ivy leaves, non-toxic flowers and chocolate towers and truffles. When it comes to wedding cake, your imagination is the only limit to the appearance of your special confection. While it is essential that the wedding cake appeals to your visual senses, it is even more important that it taste's moist and delicious. Tasting is not only a fun task, but an essential one also. Do not just settle on a cake, because you cannot see anything like what you wanted. Shop around for the best offers and do not be afraid to ask the baker if they can work with your design and style, you

might just be very surprised at how accommodating they can be. It is always wise to bring along cuttings of cakes you like and sketches of the style of cake you are looking for. Take samples of your dress, bouquet and bridesmaids colours to leave with the pastry chef. Ask the baker about additional costs, such as cake tops, pillars, columns and whether or not these items need to be returned to the

store. Also ask about the delivery process. Will the cake be set up at the reception by the baker or will the caterer have to do this? Once you have decided on a cake and a baker, get a contract in writing. There is no point agreeing aspects orally, make sure you have a written record of what you have ordered and are fully aware that the baker knows what you are looking for, this will avoid any nasty surprises on the day.

If it’s worth celebrating, it’s worth ordering a unique cake for!

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energysaving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill

a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water.

you make a choice, "A" being the most efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy.

Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows.

Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy.

Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day.

Fridges/Freezers

These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth

shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply. Insulation Upgrading loft and, where possible, cavity insulation, will save energy in your home by reducing energy losses through the building fabric.

Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing machines, opt for a more energy efficient appliance. An EU Energy Label should be displayed (A to G Scale) on appliances for sale in order to help

Perspectives 10: Ballina Open Exhibition The official opening of Perspectives 10: Ballina Open Exhibition will take place on Thursday 12th November, at 8pm. This exhibition provides an opportunity for locallybased artists in the North Mayo region to exhibit their work at Ballina Arts Centre. The exhibition features work in all media – paint, photography, sculpture etc., and is a fantastic platform for any emerging local artist to showcase their work. Perspectives has, over the years, become one of the highlights on our calendar, drawing large crowds not just on the opening night but throughout the months and it is with great excitement that we

announce it again this year. Perspectives 10: Ballina Open Exhibition is kindly supported by Ballina Beverages. Runs until 22nd December. Admission free. Marianne Heemskerk: The Sea and Beyond Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to host The Sea and Beyond, an exhibition of etchings and monoprints by Foxford-based artist Marianne Heemskerk. She explains the work as trying to ‘capture in line and colour, the light, the weather, clouds rushing across the sky, the ever changing colours and reflections, living and working in the landscape of Mayo. The cycle of life, dead birds blown in on the beach, seasons changing, a secret life going on at night when badgers

Conal Gallen: A Laugh and a Half Ballina Arts Centre welcomes back Conal Gallen with his hilarious new one man stand-up show A Laugh and a Half on 13th November. After taking over 18 months out to tour his hugely successful comedy play A Bit On The Side, the Donegal man is back with what promises to be his best show yet, jam-packed with over 2 hours of hilarious jokes, stories and songs which will have you in stitches from start to finish! Tickets for these shows can be ‘as scarce as hens’ teeth’ so early booking is strongly advised. Tickets €25. Booking Essential.

Cash On Delivery – St. Farnan’s Drama Group St. Farnan’s Drama Group presents the riotous farce Cash on Delivery written by Michael Cooney and directed by experienced director Jacinta Gormley at Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday, November 14th at 8pm. Cash on Delivery is a mixture of oddball characters and comedy situations that are sure to have you roaring with laughter. It is a performance you will want to relive over and over again. Tickets: €12 / €10. Booking advised Quiet Music Ensemble

Don’t miss this beautiful performance at Ballina Arts Centre on Thursday November 19th, at 8pm. ‘Quiet’ means both hushed and peaceful: Quiet Music Ensemble’s music is expansive, beautiful, immersive and transcendental; about being in the moment, about sound that is purely itself. Using a combination of prepared materials and improvisation, its performances are unique, each one conjuring a new world of surprising textures and sounds. “In these deafening times, the very notion of ‘quiet music’ is a revolutionary act, a mesmeric power” – The Independent, UK Tickets: €16 / €12. Booking advised Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley, Play on Words Theatre, at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 20th November, at 8pm. Hear the riveting true stories of Crean’s Antarctic explorations as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive the three famous expeditions: Discovery (1901 – 1904); Terra Nova (1910 – 1913); and Endurance (1914 - 1916). Crean’s story is a testament to human fortitude against all the elements of the Antarctic, his 36mile solitary trek to base camp during the Terra Nova expedition to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as “the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of exploration”. He was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery. Tickets: €18 /€16. Booking essential. Ballina Arts Centre is open from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. The top five reasons most diets fail

W

e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an Ottawa-based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours

Work.“If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there? 1. We think dieting has to be painful. “The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about

suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.” 2. We under-eat. Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.” 3. We over-exercise. “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV

where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”

calories we’re drinking. “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”-

4. We eat out too often and consume too much processed food. “We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”

Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”
