April/May Midweek Offer 2 nights B&B and 1 Evening Meal for just €59 per person sharing

N INDEPENDENT TOWN councillor in Castlebar, Co Mayo has asked for a debate on the issue of people wearing hoodies. The councillor made the suggestion at this weeks Joint Policing Committee meeting . Michael Kilcoyne said that a lot of money has been spent on CCTV cameras in the town but those committing crimes cannot be identified because they “camouflage their faces with a hood”. He said people in the town have told him they’ve been “terrorised by people in hoods” and have suggested introducing a law that would ban anyone from wearing a hoodie. "I want them to consider the measure. There have been a number of incidents where hoodies have been used by criminals to evade identification. This is something that is being raised with me by concerned locals," Kilcoyne is quoted as saying. The councillor is at pains to say that he does not regard all hoodie wearers as bad sorts, but he said he wanted to look at the idea to help out residents and business owners in the town.

Disposable Incomes on the rise THE news that the average disposable income of households increased last year will ring hallow for the many thousands struggling with unemployment, mortgage and household bills, and the government taking a greater share of earnings. The new figures indicate that the disposable income of the average household – earnings after tax has been deducted – rose to just over €51,000 in 2012 from €49,820 in 2011. The rise is attributed to wage increases and a jump in profits for the self-employed. Even finance experts were surprised at

the findings from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), given that households have now been hit with six austerity Budgets, and so many people are well behind on mortgage payments and energy bills. Among the hits taken by households since 2008 are three cuts to child benefit, the introduction of the universal social charge, changes in income tax credits, changes to pay-related social insurance and reductions in social welfare. The household income figure includes social welfare payments like child benefitChris and isO’Dowd arrived at after income tax

has been paid but before other essential outgoings, such as mortgage repayments. However, producing averages like this has to be meaningless as it gives no consideration to the massive discrepancies in income levels. When we look at the jobless figures and the increasing numbers seeking help from the St. Vincent de Paul organization or struggling on welfare, the figures only paint a picture of those on higher incomes getting a bit more while the lower paid or welfare recipients actually getting less.

RTE award for 60-second film

IT was celebration time last week for students of Action School of Film from Leitrim and Roscommon who travelled to the national finals of Ireland’s most prestigious youth film event in Limerick. The filmmakers were awarded the RTÉ award for their short film ‘Repulsive’. The award is given annually to a group or individual filmmaker who impresses RTÉ programmers with a film lasting just 60 seconds. ‘Repulsive’ was made by students on the Action School of Film summer course which took place in Carrick-onShannon last July. The students learned about visual storytelling and practical filmmaking techniques from course tutors John O’Dowd and Stephen O’Gorman. Students then devised, produced and edited the film as a training exercise. The training clearly paid off when the winners were announced to a national audience in Limerick and star of the film, Hannah Banks from Ballinamore, was whisked off to the RTÉ studios to be interviewed for Two Tube and the film was televised. The film was one of 450 youth produced films submitted to the festival. Action School of Film, based in Carrick-on-Shannon, were delighted with the win. It was one of three awards received for the film school during the festival. Students of Drumcong National School also travelled to Limerick for the finals of the junior section of the festival, where their film ‘Thinking Outside the Box’ was selected as a national finalist. Film School director, Ruth Earley, was thrilled about the award as it is the first major award for the school to have been won by the Carrick group. “It’s always exciting to win awards, but of course it’s extra special to bring one home to Leitrim. We’ve had such a good run over the past few years. The group in Carrick have always made consistently high quality films but have narrowly missed out on so many occasions. I’m delighted for the students who really deserve the recognition for all their efforts,” she said. ‘Repulsive’ and further information about Action School of Film can be found on www.actionfilm.ie

HSA & IFA join forces to launch farm safety campaign

New initiative aimed at older farmers

F

armers must plan their work to reduce risks, that’s the message from the Health and Safety Authority and the Irish Farmers’ Association who have today (Monday 8th April) launched ‘Farm Safety Fortnight’. Over the next two weeks the HSA will be carrying out an increasing number of farm safety visits while working with the IFA and other bodies to promote safety with a particular emphasis on older farmers in the 60+ age group. Over the last 10 years there have been 182 people killed, and many more seriously injured, as the result of farm accidents. More than half of these accidents involve farmers over the age of 60. In fact, accidents involving farmers over 55 years of age often account for 70% of farm deaths. In an effort to reverse this trend, and focus attention on age as a risk factor, the HSA and the IFA have jointly produced a DVD entitled ‘Older, Wiser, Safer – A Practical Guide to Safety for Older Farmers.’ In the DVD, farming Journalist and Broadcaster Darragh McCullough talks to Alan

Gillis and Gerry Maguire, two older farmers, about their experiences and how farming has changed over the years with more machinery, longer hours and more time pressure. Speaking about the initiative, IFA President, John Bryan said that the advice given by Alan Gillis and Gerry Maguire is very practical and he encouraged farmers to take the time to watch the DVD. “Older farmers can continue to be safe and productive on their farms, the key is to recognise age-related risks such as reduced strength and flexibility, and to modify expectations as well as work practices so that operations are completed safely”. Martin O’Halloran CEO of the Health and Safety Authority said that ‘Older, Wiser, Safer’ is part of an on-going approach to get farmers to tell their own stories and influence each other on this issue, “I believe that this DVD will resonate, not just with older farmers, but with the wider farming community. Listening to Alan and Gerry speak re-enforces the message that planning work and reducing risks means that you can farm safely, regardless of age.” Speaking about Farm Safety Fortnight Martin O’Halloran said, “We would encourage Farmers to give some time each day to farm safety and if one of our Inspectors visit, engage with them and act on any advice given. The main causes of death and injury on farms are; tractors and machinery (47%), livestock (13%) and falls from height (12%). To date, this year, there have been 2 deaths reported due to work activity on farms. Older Wiser Safer is available online at http://www.youtube.com/user/HSAOlderWis erSafer?feature=mhee

Mulherin says smart grid technology needed in Mayo M

ayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin has told the Dail that the poor electricity transmission network in Mayo is jeopardising a number major alternative energy projects in the county which are at an advanced stage of planning. The advanced renewable projects alone for North Mayo discommoded by the grid situation would represent an approximate capital investment of €408,000,000 in that area of Mayo alone. And Deputy Mulherin has called for EirGrid to be directed to implement smart grid technology, starting with a pilot project in north Mayo, to stretch capacity on the existing electricity grid lines in order to facilitate the projects. Speaking in the Dail, Deputy Mulherin said: "I very much welcome the plans to develop the grid into the west, which will represent a 240 million investment in the area by EirGrid. A 400 kV line will go into County Mayo, which is much needed.” The Deputy said she was concerned with the slow pace of progress. The existing lines are nearing saturation and there is not enough capacity to accommodate the projects including plans for wind, wave and biomass energy businesses. Deputy Mulherin continued: "Unless we take this innovative approach and try to upgrade it and get more out of it, which the technology allows, we will not realise our wind or wave or any other capacity potential because the final infrastructure is many years down the line. Deputy Mulherin asked that a firm commitment be given by next summer because investors in projects are being asked to spend a lot of money on signing

up connection agreements by that date and they need to know where they stand in respect of the implementation of smart grid technology that will help system operators use grid infrastructure more efficiently. "My understanding is that the cost of some of the smart grid technologies would be borne to a great extent by the generators. I am not saying that there are not cases where there may be some socialisation of the cost. "These projects are very far advanced and need this type of assurance from EirGrid”. "At this stage, I am asking the Minister to set up a pilot project in north Mayo. In 2012 EirGrid made a contentious decision to increase the total amount of wind energy connected to the existing 110 kV network under Gate 3 in this area from 170 MW to 340 MW, but the line does not have that capacity. Some wind farm developers were made offers prior to that decision and proceeded to invest in their projects on the understanding was that there would be no more than 180 MW accommodated on that line. "The decision by Eirgrid means the scale of the offers actually exceeds the capacity on the line and the line is saturated. The constraints and curtailments that EirGrid's decision will impose on the developers pose a challenge for the financial viability and realisation of projects that have come a long way through the planning process and are due to sign connection agreements under Gate 3 this summer. They will not be as bankable and their efforts and financial outlay more

Staycations popular Easter choice as Ballina tops the list

SEARCHES for Irish destinations soared in March according to the latest Hotels.com hot list. The monthly list, which compares destinations experiencing the largest percentage increase in searches compared to the same period last year, shows an unprecedented 17 out of 20 on the list for Irish destinations. Although this rise can largely be attributed to Irish travellers looking for a good value Easter break, the results suggest that local sporting events could have also played an important role in boosting visitor numbers. Co. Mayo topped the poll with an increase of 280%, where the Mayo Mud Run and the Currane Coastal 10k run took place and search increases for Co. Clare may have been impacted by the Stephen Roche Atlantic Challenge. Other home-grown destinations which saw a rise in searches in March include Castlemartyr in Co. Cork, which was second on the list with an increase of 175%. This was followed closely by Co. Clare (143%), Ballincollig (138%) and Rosscarbery (114%). Kate Hopcraft from Hotels.com commented: “It’s interesting to note that despite the mixed weather we experienced in March, 85% of the searches were for Irish destinations, indicating people’s preference to stay at home this Easter holiday. It is great to see a number of local sporting events encouraging Irish travellers to holiday on home soil to participate in events nationwide.” The top 20 most searched for destinations in Ireland in March 2013 compared to March 2012 are listed in the chart (right)

speculative due to the uncertain outome. "I ask the Minister to be innovative. We cannot wait till 2019. I know there is a plan to develop a circuit between Ballina and Castlebar which would reinforce the line and allow the 340MW up rate. "Part of the area would be an environmentally sensitive special area of conservation. We will not build a line there overnight. It will take at least five years. There is a great deal of new smart technology in this area including special protection and dynamic line rating schemes. I ask that some of the projects in the Mayo area receive special attention because of the way they have been discommoded due to EirGrid's decision, as well as being a pilot project. "I am sure this problem does not affect only Mayo. I am sure it is a problem in other areas with massive resources but no grid. The Minister could direct EirGrid to invest in this and give a commitment to do so by the end of summer so that people are not required to sign connection agreements under Gate 3 and spend hundreds of thousands of euro when they do not know if they can get finance from the bank to build the projects. We must consider other solutions if we are to achieve the Minister's objective which is to increase installed capacity per annum. Otherwise, we will not reach the 2020 targets because of the weaknesses in the grid in the areas where we have the resource." Responding Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said Eirgrid was considering the issue of additional wind generation and Mayo will be considered in these plans.

It’s looking good for Connacht Gold Co-op Proposes New Name and New Brands

T

urnover at Connacht Gold Coop reached a record €407m in 2012, an increase of €62m or 18% on 2011. The increased turnover was due primarily to the acquisition of the milk and retail stores businesses from Donegal Creameries plc which became effective in January 2012. This resulted in a substantial increase in sales in the Connacht Gold agribusiness, dairy ingredients and consumer foods businesses. The co-op, headquartered in Co Sligo, has also announced proposals to change its name to Aurivo Co-operative Society Limited and to rebrand its retail stores and animal feed businesses. Operating profit for the dairy, consumer foods and agribusiness cooperative was €1.75m in 2012, compared to €3.29m in 2011. The 2012 profit reflected Connacht Gold’s decision to support the milk price paid to milk suppliers during the peak production months. Furthermore, increased raw material costs for animal feed were not fully passed on in order to assist farmer customers through a difficult year for farming. The integration of the acquired nine retail stores in Donegal and two stores in Northern Ireland into the Connacht Gold business led to

an increase of 29% in agribusiness sales, to €114m. The co-op is now operating 39 stores across the five counties of Connacht, Longford, Westmeath, Donegal, Tyrone and Fermanagh. The 120m litres milk pool acquired from Donegal Creameries contributed to a significant increase in sales of consumer foods and dairy ingredients. Consumer food sales rose by 52% to almost €70m in 2012 in what was a very difficult marketplace. In spite of continuing poor consumer confidence, Connacht Gold and Donegal milk brands are performing strongly in terms of holding market share. Price increases are required in order to sustain the supply chain as the returns to processors and farmers for liquid milk are inadequate at present. Connacht Gold butter brands enjoyed another successful year and continued to outpace most competitors in growth. The dairy ingredients business saw an increase of €10m in sales, to €93m in 2012. However, a global increase in milk production led to a fall in market returns of over 9% per litre. Connacht Gold chief executive Aaron Forde said this price volatility can be expected to increase during the coming years as

we move to the end of the milk quota system. “Adding more value to milk in existing and new markets to help minimise fluctuations in commodity prices continues to be a top priority. In this regard, we are making excellent progress in sales of nutritional and beverage solutions, particularly in the fast-growing continent of Africa,” he said. Sales in Connacht Gold’s four livestock marts held steady at €90m in 2012, the record level achieved in 2011. While throughput of cattle declined, in common with regional trends, average prices increased by 11% or almost €100 per animal. Throughput of sheep increased by 5%, on top of a 17% increase in 2011. Branding Investment Chairman Padraig Gibbons announced that Connacht Gold is proposing a new name for the co-operative combined with a rebranding of its retail stores and animal feed business. Following in-depth discussions and market research over the past two years, the board is recommending to shareholders that the name of the co-operative be changed to Aurivo Co-operative Society Limited.

Eligible shareholders will be asked to vote on the recommendation at a special general meeting which will be held in conjunction with the annual general meeting on 10 May. The co-op’s network of retail stores will be rebranded as Homeland with variants of Homeland Plus and Homeland Agri to reflect the range of products and services available in each outlet. The range of Connacht Gold animal feed products will be marketed under a new brand, Nutrias. The re-branding will not impact on the high profile Connacht Gold consumer brands, which will be retained as will the Donegal Creameries brand and the recently acquired Organic For Us brand. Urging shareholders to support the co-op’s name change, Padraig Gibbons said with the growth in both depth and breadth of the business in recent years the time is now right to introduce a range of new brands and update existing brands. “In taking this decision, we are continuing our tradition of securing our future through innovation. Our investment in new brand architecture will also help us focus on exciting new opportunities to support the communities we serve,” Padraig Gibbons said.

McLoughlin Waste Disposal Ltd. Only a few short years ago waste disposal/management was believed to be the business to be in with the development of recycling and renewal plants across the country. However, the economic downturn, increased costs and levies, not to mention the competition between operators has meant a marked reduction in turnover and profits for some waste management businesses. Judge McMahan said he was satisfied to appoint chartered accountant Neil Hughes as interim examiner after being informed that the firms have a reasonable prospect of survival if certain steps are taken. Barna Waste, based in Carrowbrown, Headford Road, Galway Co Galway, and Joe McLoughlin Waste Disposal, Ardcolum, Drumshambo, Co. Leitrim, have 30,000 wheelie bin customers in Counties Sligo, Galway,

Roscommon, Mayo and Leitrim and employ 270 people. The group had expanded its operations over the past decade and handles industrial, commercial and domestic waste and operates waste transfer stations and a composting facility as well as a recycling site. Its creditors include Bank of Scotland which it owes more than €9m. The firms, which the court heard are insolvent and unable to pay its debts, petitioned the court to appoint Mr Hughes of Hughes Blake as interim examiner in a bid to secure fresh investment in the firm. The directors fear that attempts by Bank of Scotland to sell the group's assets could result in job losses and creditors not being paid. Its directors are Sean and Annette Curran of Derryloughane, East Spiddal, Co Galway, who set up Barna Waste in 1989, and acquired JMWD in 2009.

Mayo Fleadh Cheoil Launched Cancer Care West Calling All

Cyclists in Mayo, Galway Sligo and Donegal to join 240K Epic Journey

THE Fleadh Cheoil season is upon us again and it is time to take to the road. This year’s Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo will take place in Swinford on the weekend of 10th, 11th and 12th May and full details of the event were announced at a Press Launch in O’Connor’s in Main Street in the town on Wednesday night 10th April. The launch was performed by the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr. Cyril Burke, emphasising the growing links between Mayo Comhaltas and Mayo County Council. Swinford is no stranger to Fleadhanna Cheoil having hosted a number of County Fleadhs and Provincial Fleadhs over the years. Indeed Swinford hosted Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 1961, an event that was remembered at celebrations just two years ago. The Mayo Fleadh Cheoil has taken on added significance these past few years and is now a major cultural event on the county calendar. Such cultural events have an ever increasing role to play in these times of economic recession. Never had the Fleadh Cheoil such an important role to play as it has this year, the year of The Gathering. Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo 2013 takes place on the 11th and 12th May and will be

preceeded by a week of various cultural events. The east Mayo town is an ideal venue for Fleadh Cheoil Mhaigh Eo. East Mayo always had, and still has, a rich tradition of traditional music, song and dance. We can expect the echoes of music, song and dance to roll over the plains of east Mayo and across the border into south Sligo. Then back south again to airport country and west to to the homeplace of Michael Davitt. Indeed the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann is named after Michael Davitt. An extremely hard working local committee, under the watchful eyes of local Chairperson Barbara Fogarty and local Secretary, Maureen Noone have put in long hours this past few months to ensure that Fleadh Mhaigh Eo 2013 will be successful and that there will be something for everybody. Tá súil ag Coiste Mhaigh Eo de Chomhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann go mbeidh na sluaite ag druidim ar Bhéal Átha na Muice don deireadh seachtaine and do na hócáidí éagsúla. Tá rud éigin ann do chuile duine and tugtar cuireadh do chách bheith i láthair agus taitneamh a bhaint as imeachtaí na seachtaine.

O

n the June Bank Holiday weekend, Cancer Care West is looking for cyclists to make the epic journey from Donegal town to Inis Aoibhinn, Cancer Care West’s residential facility in Galway. This event is being organised in a bid to raise funds for Inis Aoibhinn. This intense route was chosen because over 70% of those using the treatment and services provided at Inis Aoibhinn come from the Mayo, Donegal and Sligo area. Speaking at the launch Gerry Gallagher said “we are looking not just for professional cyclists, but also recreational cyclists and asking them to commit to 6 weeks of training in preparation for the 240K. It is a great opportunity for people to get fit and raise some much needed funds for Cancer Care West also. To get involved all people have to do is log onto www.cancercarewest.ie and register their interest Inis Aoibhinn provides a ‘home away from home’ environment for patients who are travelling to Galway for radiotherapy treatment at University Hospital Galway. It comprises 33 en suite bedrooms and has facilities for a patient’s family member or guest to share. This allows patients to have family support during their treatment without the burden of the cost of this facility. Patients are booked into Inis Aoibhinn by a referral made through

the Radiotherapy Department at UHG and all patients and family members are also welcome to avail of the many services provided at the charity’s Cancer Support Centre in Seamus Quirke Road. The Sam Maguire cup will also be on hand to lend its support to the event! This new fundraising initiative is being organised to raise awareness of the innovative nature of Inis Aoibhinn and the uniquely holistic approach Cancer Care West takes to cancer patient care in the West of Ireland. Cancer Care West are delighted that so far the Galway Business Association, Medtronic, Goodbody’s, Smyth’s Toys, Bon Secours Hospital, Westwood House Hotel, Burkes Buses, Centra and Cantec, have come on board to help the event to get off the ground. Like many other charitable organisations Cancer Care West relies heavily on local support and according to Richie Flaherty CEO of CCW “the response to this event has been terrific, it is really easy for people to get involved by logging onto www.cancercarewest.ie or by giving us a call at 091 545000. You don’t have to be a cyclist to get involved in supporting this event, we are looking for people from all over the West of Ireland to help us organise activities in their own community and help us raise funds.

Making Peace Public What PEACE III Programme (Phase 2) is all about The PEACE III Programme, phase 2, is challenging sectarianism and racism and helping to resolve conflict, by building up trust, tolerance and good relations among communities in Sligo and across the border. Sligo has no physical border with Northern Ireland, so many people think that it has not been affected by the Northern Ireland conflict. However, there are differing perspectives on what community and identity means among people in Sligo. Issues of silence and fear of engagement can create barriers to peace-building. Sligo’s population is becoming more diverse and this raises challenges of including and welcoming all its minority communities. The PEACE III Programme, phase 2, in County Sligo is working to reconcile communities and build positive relations at local level. It aims to bring the whole agenda of peacemaking into the mainstream of Sligo life, right down to every person and community organization. This gives every person an opportunity to recognize their own responsibility to work for peace within their community in Sligo and across the border with Northern Ireland. In Sligo the PEACE III Programme, phase 2, is being rolled out by Sligo County Council and the Sligo Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Committee. An Action Plan was developed in consultation with local organizations to deliver this latest phase of the PEACE III programme. The Action Plan for Phase 2 extends from 2011 to 2013. It is funded by the PEACE III programme through the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. The Action Plan builds on earlier peace work by including new participants and initiating new cross-border partnerships. It also uses shared interests like sport, history and arts to provide a basis for meaningful peace-building. Young people are actively encouraged to get involved. There are 15 projects funded under PEACE III, phase 2. These projects will work on the following themes: • Political/historical Perspectives of Sligo • Commemoration and Remembrance

• Rural Peace • Culture, Arts, Heritage • New Communities and Peace – Challenging Racism • Urban Peace • Research into a Racist Incident Reporting System in Sligo • Travellers Peace Project • Youth Education – Active Citizenship • Developing Meaningful Cross-Border Linkages • Engaging Young People from Protestant Communities • Capacity Building • Making Peace Public by showing people the peace work that projects are doing • Good Relations Training and Mainstreaming • Mainstreaming the Learning from the Peace Programme • Understanding and Managing Conflict and Diversity Training for Urban and Rural Peace Projects The Action Plan has five priorities: 1. Address sectarianism, the legacy of partition, the legacy of the conflict in Northern Ireland and promote reconciliation and peace building 2. Challenge racism and promote positive attitudes to cultural diversity 3. Develop integrated cross-border contact and directly address southern dis-engagement from the northern counties 4. Support active participation in civic life by all groups in the community particularly those that have been excluded in the past. 5. Ensure that the peace agenda is mainstreamed into public and civic society. The overall objective of the PEACE III programme is to reinforce progress towards a peaceful and stable society and promote reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland. It emphasises reconciling communities and contributing towards a shared society. It builds on the success and lessons of the earlier PEACE programmes, PEACE 1 (1995-99) and PEACE II (2000-06). Harpers Adams University looks to North West Harper Adams University in England is looking for people from Co Sligo and the north-west generally to help publicise courses and recruit future students. The university is looking to expand its team of in-country representatives, mainly former Harper Adams students, from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The roles, which report to the Marketing and Communications Department, involve working within local communities through schools and careers events. Marketing Officer for Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, Tammy Quinn, said: "During the past year we have established a team of reps based in both the North and South of Ireland that work to recruit students at events in their local area. "It is an exciting and innovative approach to the way in which Harper Adams recruits students. "The reps work on a freelance basis attending and undertaking specified events and using their initiative to develop new opportunities." Student recruitment activities in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are of

strategic importance to Harper Adams, but face significant challenges in the current economic climate. These roles would suit people who are currently employed but have time to give, or those that would like to take on an additional role in a different field. Miss Quinn added: "Our reps are required to attend events, work with young people and be aware of the schools and recruitment processes within their local area. "Although we are hoping to secure mostly former Harper Adams students, applications will be considered from individuals who have other relevant skills or experience." Work will be undertaken on a per-hour contract basis. Hours worked will be flexible and agreed in advance, ranging from one talk every couple of months to four-five hours a week, usually linked to the school calendar. Duties comprise of liaising with local schools and attending careers fairs and conventions, building relationships with schools to promote Harper Adams, and remaining in contact with the team at the university. For more information, contact Miss Quinn: tquinn@harper-adams.ac.uk

Scouting Ireland Launches Community Celebration Week in Sligo

L-R Young scouts Sean Barnes (18), Ian Davy (Chief Commissioner Youth Programme), Jack Gill and Sinead Halton.

S

COUTING Ireland has launched ‘Community Celebration Week’, an initiative to help communities in Sligo, to benefit from the positive activities of Sligo’s 400 scouting members. Between April 12th and 21st scout groups all over Ireland will select, in consultation with their community, a local community project that will benefit from the assistance of the scouts. “Sligo scout groups will select a local project to work on between the months of May and August,” explained Ian Davy, Chief Commissioner (Youth Programme). “We have seven Scouting Ireland groups in Sligo therefore this initiative will make a huge difference throughout Sligo and demonstrate Scouting Ireland’s value among Ireland’s local communities and its active citizenship.” Projects that will be undertaken will range from building play areas to tidying areas of the community, the possibilities are endless. All Projects will be chosen, planned and undertaken by the young scouts themselves after consultation has taken place with various community leaders. Scout Groups will be given the opportunity to register their Projects with Scouting Ire-

land National Office and to upload their progress using the iPhone app, Directr App, which will allow Scouts to make short movies. The projects will be entered into the Scouting Ireland Community Celebration Awards which will be judged and presented in September 2013 at a prestigious awards ceremony. Scouting Ireland is the country’s largest volunteer led youth organisation with more than 46,000 members across the island of Ireland. Scouting Ireland offers children and youths aged 6-26 educational programmes and activities in a fun, safe and adventurous environment. In so doing, Scouting Ireland helps children and young adults to develop socially, physically, intellectually, character, emotionally and spiritually so that they can develop the life skills to become active citizens. This is only possible through the efforts of 10,000 adult volunteers who also enjoy the fun and friendship of Scouting. Scouting Ireland is a registered charity in Ireland and part of a worldwide movement of 31 million Scouts working for peace and global friendship. STARCAMP Summer camp Children to release Charity Single!

H

as your little one ever dreamed of being heard on the radio? Well this could be their big chance, as one child will be selected from each summer camp nationwide to record what is sure to be a big hit! STARCAMP is coming west this Summer, so look out for it at a venue close to you. Most of you will be familiar with STARCAMP, not only because it has been running award- winning Summer camps nationwide for the past seven years, but because owner Aideen O’Grady was successful in luring the attention of a number of Dragons in the current series of DRAGON’S DEN. She has since been invited to be a regular panellist on TV3’s Midday Show. STARCAMP will be running their awardwinning performing Summer camps in almost one hundred locations across Ireland this Summer including one on your door-step, with locations in Sligo (Sligo Mercy College – 8th – 12th July), Tubbercurry (St Attracta’s Community School 1st – 5th July), Enniscrone Secondary School (29 July – 2nd August) , Ballymote (Colaiste Muire Sec School 6th –

10th Aug), Roscommon Arts Centre (6th – 10 July, 10am – 3pm), Castlebar (The Royal Theatre & Hotel 1st – 5th July) and Claremorris (St Colman’s College 15th – 19th July). The camps are aimed at ALL boys and girls aged 4 – 13 years and will run for one week ( 9:30 – 2:30pm daily) with the children putting on a little show at the end of the week for proud families to come and enjoy. The core ethos is about building self-esteem and confidence in children in a non-competitive environment, and is open to children with all levels of ability. “Along with our energetic, carefully selected songs, dances, games and acting scenes, we have a very exciting opportunity open to all Starcampers this year. Every child who attends the renowned and affordable Starcamp this summer will be in with a great chance to perform on a single that will be recorded. This song will then be issued for release shortly afterwards. There will be one lucky child selected from each of our summer camps nationwide. These children will be given a unique and exciting opportunity of

recording this 'Song for Charity' in a recording studio. We are confident this will be a huge hit. The children will not be chosen solely on their vocal ability, but on their efforts and overall contribution to the camp.” Aideen explained. “Being on Dragon’s Den was an absolutely fantastic business decision and wonderful opportunity” explains Aideen, who did something that was never achieved in the Irish Den previously. She went in offering to give away 10% of her company and expected to have to give away more, but due to the dragon’s haggling for part of her business – she only had to part with 5%. STARCAMP has been running awardwinning summer camps for all boys and girls aged 4 – 13 throughout Ireland since 2007. Earlier this year STARCAMP PARTIES were launched. The demand is so strong we keep having to hire new party hosts! Starcamp parties are a brand new concept in children’s parties for kids of all ages. These eagerly anticipated parties offer vibrant, new and very exciting themes like The Starcamp Red Carpet Event, Pyjama Drama, Rockstar Party, The Wild West and The Royal Ball. The brand new website is also home to a new shop and a very interesting franchise section. We come along to your house and simply transform it into something magical, taking on board the theme selected. Once we arrive, parents can simply 'switch off' and leave it to us. Until this year, Starcamp was like a one man band but with lots of contributors and free help. Now there are 5 full time staff in their new office, 10 party hosts and approximately 60 part timers and contributors. If you feel that you have something to offer Starcamp, get in touch with them. In addition to everything that you’ve already read, STARCAMP are also offering an early booking incentive. If you book before May 8th, you will automatically be entered into a draw to win 4 tickets to ' Jessie J' live at the Marquee, so don’t delay, get booking! You can book your child’s summer camp or party now at www.starcamp.ie or by calling 021-4377900

500 households awaiting homes in Roscommon Almost 500 households are waiting to be housed in County Roscommon, according to new figures released by a voluntary housing association. Figures furnished by housing association, Clúid, indicated that there were currently 483 households waiting for a home in the county. As one of the largest housing associations in the country, Clúid is currently delivering 3,664 homes to low-income families and single people, older people, people with a disability and Traveller families all over Ireland. To meet this growing demand, Cluid said that innovative solutions, such as long term leasing schemes, were needed to meet the current housing need. “There is a significant amount of new, unoccupied housing left over from the previously buoyant property market around the country. This provides an opportunity for housing associations to get involved in long term leasing, in turn providing housing to those in need,” Clúid Housing Association’s Head of Policy, Simon Brooke explained.

ea Sessions in one of Ireland’s best and upcoming surf and music festival held in Bundoran, Co. Donegal. It will be held this year on June 21st, 22nd and 23rd. It has been running consecutively for four years and has grown rapidly in a short space of time. The festival promotes new and upcoming artists as well as having played host to some of the biggest and best music names out there including Kaiser Chiefs and Bell X1 (2012). Sea Sessions 2013 has teamed up with IT Sligo in order to make this year’s festival bigger and better than ever. A group of third year PR and Event Management students are applying their skills to recruit and manage this year’s

volunteer programme. This is the first time the students have worked on an event of this calibre. It’s an exciting opportunity for Sea Session organisers, the students and IT Sligo. The students have been given the task of recruiting new volunteers for the festival and will be doing this in a number of ways, look out for our Facebook and Twitter pages. Volunteers will be required to work over the course of the three day festival in three, four hour slots. Volunteers will be assigned different tasks throughout the course of the festival including pre festival preparation, stewards, tickets scanners, beach stewards, campsite stewards and even backstage crew!

This year the organisers have managed to get well known bands ‘Bastille’ and ‘The Original Rude boys’ to headline the festival, so obviously volunteers will get a chance to see both of these bands preform live. Sea Sessions has a genre for everyone ranging from indie, to dance to rock music. As it’s also a surf festival it makes it unique to every other festival in Ireland. It’s a great opportunity to meet other surf enthusiasts, dip your feet in the world of surfing and to catch some waves. Why wouldn’t you want to go to a beach party like this all for only 12 hours’ work? So why become a Sea Sessions volunteer you ask? Well you get to experience going to one of the best festivals in Ireland and you get to see a huge variety of different bands and artists, you only work a total of 12 hours the entire weekend and best off all? It’s completely free to volunteer for Sea Sessions! 60/70 volunteer will be required to work at this year’s festival so if you are interested or know someone who may be interested check out www.seasessions.ie and sign up to volunteer! Keep an eye on both Facebook and Twitter pages also. The students will also be having an information day in the main concourse of IT Sligo on Wednesday the 17th of April between 1 and 3 pm, so head on down to find out more and to get involved!

Increase in underage drinking in Roscommon THERE could be a serious problem with underage drinking in Co. Roscommon, according to the startling findings of a new survey of over 2,500 secondary school students in the county. The survey carried out by the Western Region Drugs Task Force has raised concern over the extent of underage drinking, having found that a high percentage of students at second level were drinking alcohol on a regular basis. The survey asked over 2,500 students attending nine secondary schools throughout the county, from first year up to sixth year, about their exposure to and use of alcohol and drugs. While the survey found that drugs, such as cannabis, did not appear to be widely used or available it did yield some startling results where alcohol was concerned. It found that 89 percent of 16-17 year olds in Transition Year (TY) and Fifth Year in the county had previously tried alcohol, while 50 per cent admitted having being “really” drunk on a previous occasion. Over one third of the TY and Fifth Year students surveyed (36 percent) also admitted to being drunk in the previous month. The survey found that alcohol use was also prevalent among younger students, from First Year upwards. Half of all First Years admitted to having tried alcohol and over 11 percent admitted having had a drink in the previous month. A lower percentage of First, Second and Third Year students, however, admitted to being “really” drunk or drinking in the previous month compared to their older counterparts. The figures suggested that alcohol consumption may be triggered from Transition Year onwards, when a much higher percentage of students admit to being “really” drunk and drinking in the previous month. When asked about peer pressure students also indicated that there was greater pressure to drink than to take drugs. Transition Year students recorded the greatest amount of peer pressure to drink at 17 percent. The survey also found that 40 percent of the students surveyed had their first alcoholic drink at home with their parents – this was the most common way that students had tried alcohol. The second most popular way that students had their first drink was outdoors with friends, while in third place was at a friend’s house. There is also a perception among young people that drugs were “more risky” than alcohol, according to the survey, which found that between 79 and 89 percent of students believed this to be the case. The survey findings were presented at the launch of a countywide campaign to tackle underage drinking on Monday. Community Liaison Worker for Roscommon Emmet Major and Chief Superintendent Padraig Rattigan were in attendance at the campaign launch at Vita House. The ‘Expect to be asked’ campaign is highlighting the requirement for young people to carry the Garda national age card and will also encourage parents to take greater responsibility and speak to their children about alcohol.

entertainment Vauney Strahan Exhibition Handel’s Opera “Giulio Cesare” live from the Met comes to Castlebar at the Linenhall “Substratum”, a new body of work by Irish artist Vauney Strahan, continues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for the month of April. “Substratum”, meaning ‘an underlying layer’, is an exhibition of paintings, in oil on board, that captures the artist’s interpretation of the relationship between the spaces that surround us and our own inner world. “As human beings we are continuously weaving our way in and around the physical spaces we occupy,” she explains. “What interests me however is the simultaneous navigation of a world less tangible than this physical realm… the inner landscape, the perceptual architecture of the mind and memory, the emotional and the spiritual realms. My chief artistic interest concerns the place where these two landscapes converge, where the subconscious meets the conscious; where mind meets matter.” With degrees in History of Art and Fine Art, since 2006 Strahan

Internet tops worker stress poll

Long-distance 3D laser camera unveiled by Edinburgh team

said. It will primarily be used to scan objects such as vehicles - but is unable to detect human skin. The reason is that skin does not reflect the laser in the same way as most other objects - meaning for those wishing to evade the camera's gaze, stripping naked is an option. Beyond capturing images of objects, the technology could also be used to keep track of the movement of rocks, or foliage growth.

WORKERS are more concerned about losing their internet connection at home than having no heating or water, a study suggests. Nearly 40% of people believe their stress levels would be higher if they were unable to surf the web than if basic utilities were cut off or their televisions stopped working. Only 4% of London-based commuters said they did not need the internet at all. The report's findings suggest Britons have become more reliant on online services than ever. Last year 17% of those questioned claimed they could not live without an internet connection. The figure now stands at 27%, the study found. Meanwhile, a quarter of those surveyed said they could only last 24 hours without a home connection. The poll - of 1,000 London commuters revealed that 38% would prefer to lose other utilities than see their internet go down. Around 32% said they would be most worried if they had no water while some 18% claimed a lack of heating would cause them greatest stress. Claire Sellick, of information security trade show Infosecurity Europe, said: "Having internet connection is part and parcel of our everyday lives, becoming more important than even heat and water at home, which does seem phenomenal but shows just how dependent we are on the internet. "Considering that so much information now passes over the internet, both in our private and corporate lives, now more than ever it's important to consider how you access this information and how you go about protecting your most sensitive data." The study, commissioned by Infosecurity Europe, was carried out in London last month. This year's Infosecurity Europe event begins in London on April 23 and will showcase new products and services.

camera able to create 3D images up to one kilometre (0.62 miles) away has been developed by a team in Edinburgh. Physicists at Heriot-Watt University

developed a technique which uses lasers to scan almost any object. With extra research, the camera's range could extend to 10km (6.2 miles), the team

Highly accurate The camera works, the team explained, by bouncing lasers off distant objects, and measuring the time it takes for the light to travel back to the detector. The camera is able to record its subject to an accuracy of one millimetre. With further modifications to the system's image-processing software, the team said it believed the same technology could be used to measure an object's speed and direction. "Our approach gives a low-power route to the depth imaging of ordinary, small targets at very long range," said Aongus McCarthy, a research fellow at Heriot-Watt. Mr McCarthy added: "It is clear that the system would have to be miniaturised and made more rugged, but we believe that a lightweight, fully portable scanning depth imager is possible and could be a product in less than five years."

Billionth music single downloaded ACTS such as Adele and Maroon 5 have helped push the UK record industry to a new milestone with the one billionth download of a digital single. The volume of sales for downloads has exploded in recent years to the extent that barely any physical singles are sold except in the run-up to Christmas. The billionth download was bought on Monday night, according to data tracking by the Official Charts Company. The company's figures also show that Adele's Someone Like You is the most downloaded track ever in the UK, with Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera at number two with Moves Like Jagger. Downloading took off in a major way in 2004, the same year that a separate sales chart was launched, and figures went on to be included in the main singles chart the following year. Download sales for singles now run to more than three million each week, and last year they hit new heights with 188.6 million tracks sold. The one billion figure does not include sales of whole albums, but does include

album tracks which are bought individually. Chief executive of the BPI Geoff Taylor said: "The digital music revolution has made it easy to buy any song you like, instantly, for half the price of a coffee. "As fans increasingly download music on the move, tablets, smartphones and connected

cars will drive another phase in digital music's expansion." Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot said: "The explosion in download sales over the past nine years means we are genuinely now living in the digital music age - with Adele as our queen."

And I almost fell over.’ Mr Mahurin says living on the streets is ‘in his nature’ and insists he is as ‘happy as can be’, but is considering upgrading to a new tent. He also plans to get some much needed dental work done, visit his son and put the majority of it into savings. ‘With all the other homeless people around here, I’ve made up my mind,’ he added. ‘I’m gonna give them each $100 (£65).’ He also joked that he would leave some additional funds aside for his ‘new friends’ once news spreads of his lottery win.

Stud manager at the centre, Suzanne Dufty, who helped deliver the newborn, added: : ‘The birth was all very easy – and the mother gave birth herself. I helped so I was satisfied everything was fine. ‘Once the waters have broken it is all over very quickly. Before that you have her walking in circles and having contractions which can take a long time. ‘By the time I got there she was in the final stages and the actual birth was over in around a minute.’ Sorrel is the second foal to be born to five-year-old Bottriel and after spending some time with mum she will be introduced to the rest of the horses. Kevin Ginsberg, who runs the centre, added: ‘Sorrel will be based at the centre. She will be bonding with her mother for a few months now.’

Show her a carrot and she’ll run a mile… but she’s happy to eat oodles of noodles. Georgi Readman has chomped down so many packets of the stringy stuff that if you laid the strands she’s consumed end to end, they’d stretch from London to Glasgow. The 18-year-old has feared eating most other foods since she was eight and so lives off up to nine packets a week of her favourite snack, with the odd potato or piece of chicken thrown in. ‘I just love noodles,’ she said. ‘Mum goes to the supermarket and brings back as many packets as she can. Luckily they’re only 11p. ‘I always fancy noodles and I’ve even eaten them uncooked.’ Georgi, who has selective eating disorder and weighs only 45kg (7st), starts feeling sick when she tries other foods including fruit and veg. But she wants to expand her diet after a doctor who examined her skinny 1.6m (5ft 3ins) frame thought she must have leukaemia. ‘My dream is to eat healthily and put on weight,’ said the youngster, of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight.

Travelling Light Jewellery and accessories Finally, keep your packing even lighter by paring your make up and wash bag down to the bare minimum.

Y

ou might stay here in the west and spend a few days in one of our fabulous towns like westport, sligo, ballins, carrick on shannon or donegal. Or maybe you’re jetting off to Prague, Paris, Rome, or even further afield. The packing basics for a mini break remain the same. You want to pack light. You want comfortable clothes and shoes for trekking round the sites during the day but you don’t want to scream TOURIST! Y ou want elegant evening wear, but you don’t want to take stuff that needs hanging, ironing or will crease to hell after 2 hours in a suitcase. If you have 2 nights and 2 days, plus some hellish travelling you want clothes that do double duty and stay looking good. Top Tips for your wardrobe: Pick a colour palette for the weekend - If your skirt, trousers and tops all go together you will have much more choice when you get dressed in the morning.

Choose fabrics from your wardrobe that you know don’t crease. Stick to what you know – If you take what you think are great new outfits, but when you try them on you hate them then you’re kind of stuck. Accessorise - Belts, earrings and necklaces take up no room at all in your luggage and mean you get a bit more flexibility in your outfits. Clip on earrings change the look of shoes, brooches work on T Shirts, bags and jackets. Here a bold red belt and cuff, teamed with smoky eye make up give a bold, dramatic evening look, while the same dress, bag and shoes teamed with delicate silver accessories and red lipstick gives an altogether more elegant evening look. If you take a scarf that doubles as a shawl you can take that out with you in the evening too. Whilst for daytime sightseeing and travelling 3 t shirts, a skirt and a pair of trousers actually gives you

6 different outfits before you’ve even accessorised and considering you’ll be wearing one of these outfits when you arrive and another when you leave you should have no problem fitting it all in a small weekend bag

Top tips for your makeup and wash bag: Keep the samples you find in magazines, or even ask for them at beauty counters. They’re great if you’re only going for a few nights Don’t waste money buying tiny travel sizes. Decant your larger products into smaller bottles (you can buy these at Boots) or if you’ve bought travel sizes in the

Your essential 2 day capsule wardrobe: Little Black Dress 2 different belts in different colours evening bag Large day time tote bag Pair of lightweight, comfortable trousers A skirt 3 x T Shirts/Tops A scarf A lightweight jacket Ballet Pumps or flats Black heels

past, keep those bottles to decant into. Keep your look simple. Hairdryers in hotels are never right in front of the mirror and they mostly wheeze like an asthmatic tortoise. Take a hair brush and a few elastic bands and save the up dos for home. Take double duty make up. Lipstick works as blusher, eyeshadow as liner. Don’t paint your nails blood red just before you leave. Travel manages to chip nail polish without you even touching anything.

Cheats ripping off car buyers as 'clocking' scams on rise

M

ORE cars than ever have had their mileage altered as cheats cash in on demand for secondhand vehicles, Independent Motors can reveal. The shady figures behind the practice are putting the lives of unsuspecting buyers at risk by falsifying mileage ('clocking') to the tune of up to 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometres) on some cars, new Cartell.ie figures show. The implications are sinister for the safety of drivers, passengers and the road

users they meet because of potentially excessive wear and tear on vital parts. As well as that, buyers risk losing thousands when the true history of their purchase is discovered and the trade-in value of their car plummets. According to the car-history and vehiclecheck experts at Cartell.ie, more than 11pc of cars now on our roads have been 'clocked'. That is a frightening proportion. It means more than one in 10 cars being driven today

is likely to be dodgy in some respect. The 11pc figure is based on details of more than 50,000 cars and as such is likely to be an accurate reflection of what is going on. Responding to queries from Independent Motors, the legal manager of Cartell.ie, John Byrne, says the rate of clocking has steadily increased since the start of the recession. He adds: "Worryingly, the clocking rate has crept up steadily since we started

tracking these figures. "The figure of 11pc is almost twice as high as the comparable figure in the UK which currently stands at 6pc." The lack of cash for new vehicles is helping to drive demand for used cars. And that is where the 'clockers' are exploiting the market. There is no doubt the number of older cars is increasing. The 2011 Bulletin of Vehicle and Driver Statistics showed that 79pc of private cars were four years or older (71pc in 2009) while 60pc were six years and older (53pc in 2009). "Lower mileage vehicles, particularly for certain registration years such as 2009, can be sold at a premium due to the considerable demand for them," Mr Byrne says. He and his colleagues are aware of several severe cases of clocked vehicles this year. They tell a story of one customer who checked with their organisation this week. It had a recorded mileage from a reputable source that was 100,000 miles more than the stated current total. "Worse still, that mileage had been recorded three years ago," Mr Byrne revealed. That means it could have travelled as many as 200,000 miles more than was claimed. Whoever buys a vehicle like that could face huge repair bills. They would also get a lot less when they trade it in, leaving them thousands of euro out of pocket. Buying privately is fraught with danger but according to recent analysis, buyers appear to be increasingly bypassing established dealers when it comes to purchasing secondhand vehicles. Consumer legislation is quite weak in the area of private-to-private sale deals.

Sunny side up for new Citroen Cabriolet

I

t has sold in trailer-loads in the UK and now claims a 24pc market share in its segment there. In contrast, the DS3 has captured only a modest 5pc of the cake here. However, Citroen believes that's because of its concentration in recent times on re-structuring its Irish operations rather than devoting resources to intensive local promotion of the car. Now, though, it feels the time has come to capitalise on its proven potential by lifting the lid on its new, petite but sturdy convertible. Admittedly, in Cabrio guise, it slots into "a niche within a niche" but, on the evidence of a brief first drive in Valencia last week, it's likely to provide stern competition for established rivals, like the Fiat 500C and Mini Convertible. Interestingly, Citroen revealed that, it plans to launch at least three new models, two saloons and, for the first time, an SUV. Ardnaree, Ballina. 096-70523 Morgan

MK Tyres

The cabrio gets here in March when we can aspire to some sunshine. The car's motorised, three-stage canvascovered roof takes just 16 seconds to fully retract even at speeds of up to 75mph. The test car, with a refined and punchy six-speed THP 155 turbocharged engine, will be on sale here along with another petrol and a diesel variant. Pricing, like exact specification, has not yet been confirmed but expect the DS3 DSign VTI 82 (4.9l/100km; 112 Co2g/km) to cost around €21,195; the DStyle e-HDi 90 Airdream EGS6 (3.8, 99) €25,045; and the DS3 DSport THP 155 (5.9, 137), €25,545, excluding related charges. With five or six-speed manual gearboxes, economy of up to 57.6mpg is claimed. This impressed with assured handling and zesty acceleration and seems destined, at the least, to tempt buyers.

Springtime Car Care

29

Because we feel the effects of winter more harshly than summer, we go to extra lengths to protect ourselves with coats and hats and gloves.

M

ost of us make sure that our cars are ready for the onslaught of frigid winter weather too. We make sure we have snow tires, an ice scraper and deicer. However, in these milder months we can shed our heavy and restrictive coats and hats and take life easy. We also tend to be more lax with our car care too. Remember, your car needs protection and routine maintenance year-round, no matter what the temperature. Your engine is effected by extremes of temperature. Don't think that it isn't hard on the engine when you sit idling in a traffic jam with the air conditioner blasting away inside. The first reason to keep up a maintenance schedule is to save yourself money in the long run. If you have a newer car in order to keep the warranty in effect you need to have it serviced according to your manufacturers recommended schedule. If your car is older and out of warranty you need to be more vigilant. It's up to you to make a service schedule for your car. Make a checklist and keep track of the following items; Oil: This should be changed every 3,000 miles. If your car is "using" oil as the saying goes, check it every other time you fill up. Carry an extra quart

of oil in the trunk. Along with an oil change most "speedy" oil change businesses check belts, hoses, fluid levels, tires, etc. Antifreeze: Have your cars heating and cooling system checked at least yearly. You want to make sure you have adequate temperature protection, summer and winter. Air filter: This should be checked at the same time you have your oil changed. A clogged air cleaner can really slow down your engines performance. Brakes: If you notice any squealing of your breaks have them checked as soon as possible. It's much cheaper to replace worn pads than it is to have to replace expensive rotors if they become worn. Tyres: The air pressure is usually checked at the same time you have your oil changed. You should also have the tires rotated on a regular basis, this can really prolong their life. Battery: Batteries are sealed units now. Have the battery checked at least once a year. Following these tips all year round will help you keep you car in top running order.

Improve Your Hearing

ARE YOU OVER WEIGHT?

Sound Source Location Exercise Here is the first drill for sharpening your hearing. This helps your ear's directional sense and requires a partner. Get some small noisemaker like a horn or even a small radio speaker. Go to a large room with very little acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passer-by so you might want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you. Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made.

H

EARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional. Here are five assorted tips and drills you can do to make sure you maintain your hearing ability. Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill, and irritating noises every day such as power tools in your workplace or road-works are detrimental to

your hearing. Avoid them at all cost. Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose & throat) Check-ups Add visiting an EENT doctor to your list of bi-annual check-ups alongside your usual ones, like visits to the dentist and general medical check-ups. This helps maintain all your senses, not just hearing. EENTs can give you preventive medications to treat any mild problems you may have with hearing before these worsen. Vitamins and Medication There are four vitamins and medications that have been tested and proven to help in the maintenance of hearing. These haven't been noted to significantly enhance a person's hearing acuity, but they have been known to prevent the deterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg a day), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day).

Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then later throw in a third... you get the picture. This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear. Keeping Your Ears Clean Bacteria, (known as “wax”) builds up in ears very fast. Although this is the case, a small amount of bacteria is actually good for your ears. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from other bacteria, fungi, insects and water. But excess wax can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing. That is why it is essential to use ear-buds or sprays to clean your ears twice or three times a month. Avoid cleaning your ears everyday as this will irritate your ears.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE

Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process

A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.

A Loss Assessor will:

• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf

Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

White & Associates

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company.

• Public Loss Assessors • Independent Claim Estimators • Property Damage Insurance Consultants

There are always grey areas Claims assessing is not an exact science and there are many instances where there is no absolute answer to the way a claim for a particular item should be settled. Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. LOSS ASSESSORS charge a fee agreed with you in advance, for the work undertaken ON YOUR BEHALF

When should I appoint my Loss Assessor?

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?

The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims

Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your

The way a claim is prepared and presented if every bit as important as the way in which it is negotiated and settled. You therefore need to appoint a LOSS ASSESSOR as soon as you realise that you have a claim. DON’T WAIT until things start to go wrong – when the Insurance Company’s LOSS ADJUSTER tells you that you are not entitled to claim for something which you were convinced forms part of your claim – or when the LOSS ADJUSTER tries to reduce the amount you are claiming.
