he revelation this week that some burger meals have the equivalent recommended fat, salt and calorie intake for an entire day will not come as welcome news to the Restaurant Association of Ireland or the Irish Hotels Federation who have been resisting attempts to introduce mandatory calorie labeling on menus in hotels, restaurants and cafes. The results of a Safefood study showed that a quarter pounder, including a large soft drink and chips, contains 100 per cent of an adult’s Guideline Daily Amount. The research showed that a standard quarter pounder with all the trimmings (bacon and cheese topping), a regular portion of chips and a medium soft drink, if consumed in one sitting, would amount to approximately 1,500 calories. This contributes to over two thirds of the adult guideline amount for calories without accounting for other food consumed during the day. The research, which was carried out across 240 takeaways, claims going by the recommended health guidelines, that if a person orders a large burger meal that they would not be able to eat anything for the rest of the day. The survey also highlighted that in one-third of takeaway restaurants, “kids” burgers were actually larger than regular-sized ones, while the average quarter pounder has twice the calories of a “regular” burger. Dr. Cliodhna Foley-Nolan, director of human health and nutrition with Safefood said that: “While takeaway burgers are a source of iron and protein, they contain considerable levels of fat and salt. In addition, the usual burger meal is not balanced and is practically devoid of vegetables and fibre.” Continues on Page 2

Terrific festival week in Ballina

Charity Spinathon organisers/participants Paul Barrett, David O'Mahoney, Ian O'Dowd, Aiden Sweeney and Cathal Sweeney with Lady of The Moy Kate Leonard

M

OST people would admit that the “sun shone” for Ballina during this year’s fabulous festival of fun. After the rain of recent weeks the people from the Salmon Capital, in addition to many visitors, participated in a terrific week of activities organised by a hard-working festival committee. From Sunday week, when 19-years-old Ballina girl, Kate Keonard, was crowned

Lady of the Moy, to the Fireworks Display on Saturday and the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Monday, the days were crammed with events for young and old as people threw aside any recessionary gloom to engage in a festival which revealed an amazing level of community spirit and support. This spirit and willingness to help others was demonstrated strongly in the 24-

hour Spinathon organised by two local businesses, which finished at the start of the fireworks display. Aidan and Cathal Sweeney of An Sean Sibin, and David O’Mahoney and Paul Barrett of Functional Fitness took part in an Olympicsized challenge to attempt to ride to the London Olympics for the mental awareness charity “Aware”. Together, they managed to smash their original target by cycling a record-breaking 1,154 km., the equivalent of 722 miles. The “riders” are very thankful to all their generous sponsors and expect to raise several thousand euro. They were assisted by a team of over 100 volunteers and local celebrities such as Ireland's Rugby international, Gavin Duffy, and World Champion Boxer, Ray Moylette. Tony Hennigan from the Manchester Mayo Tourism group added "I thought it was a fantastic idea for a very worthy cause. They all deserve a Gold medal each. That distance would have taken the team to London and back to Ballina, with enough left over for a victory circuit of the town.' With another fund raising raffle organised for August 4th in An Sean Sibin organisers are crossing their fingers on a record breaking grand total. Certainly the festival organisers can take a bow after a memorable festival week in Ballina.

Heart Attack Grill lives up to its name as customer collapses Continued from front page According to reports in the US the unnamed woman was eating a 6,000 calorie Double Bypass burger at the The Heart Attack Grill, a hospitalthemed diner with a motto of “Taste Worth Dying For”. In February a man was wheeled out by paramedics after eating a “Triple Bypass Burger”.

All the diner’s burger buns are smothered in lard, while the Quadruple Bypass has four half-pound meat burgers and eight slices of processed American cheese. A side order of 20 slices of bacon is available for $3.69 (£2.50). It has a calorie count of 8,000 to 10,000 and according to Mr Basso, the owner has

Steve Noone’s Gardening Tips Our Summer once again has proved itself to be typically Irish, with unprecedented levels of rainfall for June, and into July, which has had its impact on our gardens. This is not all bad, of course, but it presents a few tough challenges. Firstly we will look at lawns. Mowing regularly is important yet difficult. Try to maintain a height of between 40 and 70mm to keep moss at bay and encourage strong growth. Avoid using heavy mowers when ground is wet to prevent compaction and drainage problems. Pale lawns may need an application of lawn fertilizer; growth will slow down over the next few weeks; edging grass along beds and paths will keep things tidy. In the vegetable garden, early potatoes can be lifted if ready; blight is a common problem due to the warm, wet conditions, affected leaves can be trimmed off or bigger areas treated with spray, Dithane or Bordeax. Continue to plant fast-growing salads. Winter Cabbage can also be sown out. Apple and Pear trees may be susceptible to apple and pear scab and may need treatment. Bedding flowers, baskets and tubs need feeding every two weeks and will continue to grow strong. Young trees need to be watched for drought effects. Weeds in beds and planted areas need to be controlled, with either manual removal or careful application of weed killer. Holiday season is upon us, so it is a good idea to organise a willing neighbour or friend to keep a tab on your garden during absences. Here’s hoping we don’t have to go too far for some nice Summer sunshine. By Steve Noone Landscaping, Sligo. IBS Publications, Unit 3,Riverview House, Barret Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Full day’s calorie count in one burger meal Continued from front page A recent report from the Food Safety Authority has called for calorie counts to be displayed on menus in restaurants, bars and cafes. It made its recommendation after public consultation which showed that 96% of consumers wanted calorie labeling. Minister for Health James Reilly has said that if enough restaurants do not move towards calorie display on a voluntary basis he will bring in legislation. He said it was unfair on those who were willing to co-operate (e.g. McDonalds and Subways) while others refused to do so. The Restaurants Association of Ireland claim such a move would cripple an already ailing industry while the IHF said they would oppose any attempt to introduce mandatory calorie labeling. However, Dr. Mary Flynn, Chief Specialist in Public Health Nutrition at the FSA, said calorie labeling would be a huge step forward for obesity prevention in Ireland. Whatever the outcome of this debate will be this week’s information on the calorie content of food consumed by so many people on a regular basis in Ireland will provide more that a little food for thought.

Judge hits out at alcohol-related assaults in Carrick THE news is all too familiar throughout the north-west, but at last week’s sitting of Carrick-on-Shannon Circuit Court Judge John O’Hagan hit out at the number of assault cases that come before him on the northern circuit and the fact that so many of them involve alcohol. Speaking during a case of assault in Mohill, Judge O’Hagan addressed the court saying, “I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again. Over 90% of the cases I hear on the northern circuit are assault and invariably they involve alcohol. What are the courts to do to prevent that, to ensure that you and I can walk down the street at 2 or 3 am and not expect to be assaulted?” He added “It is the usual sight at 4 am, such as ‘your chip is bigger than mine’ or ‘you got more vinegar than me’.” Judge O’Hagan added, “How did the matter arise? Over an incident at a takeaway, a row. It happens all the time, in every county I go to. Young men go out, get fired up on drink and set upon each other.” Speaking about the reaction of those

involved in such incidents when confronted by members of An Garda Siochana, he said the attitude was a case of, “This is my Mohill, this is what I want to do, you men in blue aren’t welcome.” Judge O’Hagan insisted, “You can’t do that.”

Could Hollywood actress help turfcutters’ cause THE controversial issue of turf cutting has cropped up again in recent days, but this time in the most unlikely of places. Hollywood actress Mischa Barton, who was in Ireland at the launch of the stage production of Steel Magnolias, has been speaking of her childhood holidays in Roscommon, and working on the bog. Mischa , who's mother Nuala comes from Roscommon, says everyone pitched in on her uncle’s farm and that involved working during turf cutting time on the family’s bog. There has been speculation that the turf cutters and contractors association might try to enlist the actress’s help in their ongoing campaign.

Deaths on western roads increase THE NUMBER of lives lost on roads in the western region has increased by almost 30 percent in the first six months of the year. Figures for the first half of 2012 indicated that 23 people lost their lives on roads in the Western counties which include Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. This represents an increase of seven deaths or almost 30 percent on the same period last year and is the highest increase since 2008. Sixteen of the deaths occurred at weekends. So far this year 98 people have lost their lives on our national roads. June proved to be the worst month for fatalities with 25 lives lost.

Big fall in number of young people ‘signing on’ in Galway

A

t first glance the headline would seem to indicate a positive upturn in the local economy. The reality, however, seems to be much different. There has been a 16% decrease in the number of under 25s signing on for dole payments in Galway since this time last

year, but the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) believes that this only indicates that more young people are emigrating or remaining in further education. The new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that there were a total of 22,937 people on the Live Regis-

ter in the county in June 2012. The number of Galway people signing on increased by 876 between May and June 2012 and rose by 1,408 between June 2011 and June 2012. Figures for Co Galway show a 16% decrease in the number of people under the age of 25 on the Live Register between June of 2011 and June of 2012. At first glance, the figures appear to indicate an improved employment situation for people in the county who are under the age of 25. However, a spokesperson for the NYCI revealed that this apparent decrease does not mean that more young people are finding employment. “Although the overall figures are coming down, this simply reflects the fact that young people in Galway and throughout the country feel that there is no hope of finding work here, and that is pushing many to leave in order to seek opportunities elsewhere,” said James Doorley, Assistant Director of the National Youth Council of Ireland. The NYCI stance is borne out by figures that show that there has been a steady decline in the number of under 25s on the Live Register in Galway since 2009.

Castlerea schemes hit badly with ongoing water problems MANY of them wonder how much longer it will go on for. Businesses and householders in the Castlerea area are becoming highly frustrated and nearing breaking point over ongoing problems with water supplies on both the regional and urban schemes. A boil water notice has been in place on the regional water supply scheme since July 4th. This is the second time in recent weeks that such a boil water notice has been in place on the regional scheme, despite the fact that a new UV treatment system was put in place a number of months ago.

A boil water notice has also been enforced in relation to the urban water supply scheme since May 23rd. Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice said that questions needed to be answered in relation to the cost and efficiency of the new treatment plant, which was put in place at Longford Springs only a few months ago. “This new treatment plant was put in place at huge expense and it does not seem to be working- this is the second boil water notice on the regional supply in the past month and the matter has not been solved. Who is the council taking its ad-

vice from and who is responsible for this ongoing problem,” asked Cllr Fitzmaurice. A boil water notice has also been in place on the urban water supply scheme since the end of May. Cryptosporidium was confirmed in the water supply at Silver Island Spring on May 23rd. Speaking to the Roscommon Herald this week, Director of Services with Roscommon County Council, Majella Hunt explained that there were “technical problems” with the new UV treatment system which had been put in place a number of months ago. The system cost in the region of €100,000.

One death per week from suicide in Mayo

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne – concerned over the alarming increase in suicide rate in Mayo.

I

T is not an enviable statistic, but a tragic one and the situation seems to be getting worse. The realization that on average one person per week is now taking their own life in Mayo has given rise to extreme alarm and Mayo county council have decided to tackle the problem. It was revealed last week that 23 people in the county have died by suicide

since the turn of the year. The frightening statistics were discussed in depth at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council after Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne had raised the matter, adding that figures had trebled in the last three years. An emotional discussion on mental health and suicide prevention took place in the council chamber following a presentation by Mary O’Sullivan, the HSE West Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention and Máire Ní Dhomhnaill, a counsellor in the Family Resource Centre in Castlebar. Cllr Kilcoyne, who also runs an undertaker business in Castlebar, said the sense of agony among families affected by suicide was ‘indescribable’ and the Council had to help reduce the numbers of suicides in the county. “The year is only half over and so far 23 people we know of have taken their lives through suicide. That is nearly one a week and they come from all age groups, young and old. That figure has trebled on what it was three years ago and there are no signs of it abating at all.“Something serious is happening when there is a 300 per cent increase in the number of people deciding that life is not worth living in this county. It is one of the greatest crises facing our people. If 23 people were killed on our roads we would be screaming looking for help but there is no outcry. It is not given the priority it should be given and sadly there is no sign of that changing. It is up to all of us to do our best to change that,” he told the meeting. A proposal by the two guest speakers for Mayo County Council to provide financial sup-

port to them to recruit a part-time project worker was supported by the councillors. County Manager Peter Hynes said he could not commit to calls for the Council to appoint a Suicide Prevention Officer with roles similar to that of the Road Safety Officer but would look at the proposal. The Mayo Suicide Prevention Group was formed over two years ago and meets regularly and is made up of approximately 50 organisations who help promote positive mental health and take away the stigma of people reaching out for help. Ms O’Sullivan explained that their proposal was to work with local media groups to promote good practice in the reporting of suicide and enlist their support to promote key messages from the campaign. Erris based councillor Rose Conway-Walsh told the meeting that she got involved in suicide prevention after a 26-year-old close friend took her own life and she did not see any signs of it beforehand. She said she did not want to let it happen again and proposed that all councillors take part in ASIST training to help identify the risks of suicide. Cllr Gerry Ginty said the ‘elephant lurking in the room’ with regards to suicide was the drinks industry and he claimed that alcohol was a huge contributory factor in young people’s suicide. “Alcohol puts you in a certain frame of mind where normally you would go home and think things through but because of bloody drink you don’t. This government should have the courage of its convictions to stop the sale of cheap drink and the glamorisation of drink,” he said.

IT was nostalgia time for many of the older folk in Ballymote last week when for the first time in 37 years the former Ballymote cinema opened its doors to the sounds of some world-renowned musical talent. The occasion was the gala opening of the new 'Art Deco' building following a €500,000 refurbishment. The landmark cinema, closed since 1975,will now play host to a wide and varied range of artistic activities, from a return of cinema in state-of-the-art 3D to full scale musical productions, concerts, school productions, art exhibitions and other associated events. The official opening marked the culmination of a long campaign to have 'The Abbey', as it was known, revamped as a focal point at the centre of the local community. The building is leased from Sligo County Council by the Ballymote Community Enterprise Group, and the cost of the refurbishment project was mainly funded by Sligo Leader. The restoration scheme has been completed fully in keeping with its unique and original art deco design and theme.

It is one of the only remaining art deco-style buildings in the country. Wednesday's gala concert featured the band of An Garda Siochána and the special guests included famous violinist and Sligo resident Steve Wickham, of Waterboys fame. Steve performed with another famous Sligo man, Kieran Quinn. The ex-Sligo county GAA star is an accomplished pianist and features with the north-west's premier jazz outfit, The Odd Couple. He has also featured on recordings with many artists, including No Crows and young jazz virtuoso Matthew Halpin. Another famous Sligo talent on stage was James Nelson of the Celtic Tenors. James is one of the country's most renowned tenor voices. Local man West Roberts also performed at the concert. The young baritone began singing lessons with Anne Marie Keaney at the age of 14, while still at Sligo Grammar School. Renowned mezzosoprano Dara MacMahon was also among the special guests. She is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, and the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Warning about bogus septic tank inspectors HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned about bogus inspections of their septic tanks. Although registration of septic tanks has now begun, there will be no inspections in Mayo, or elsewhere, before next year. At a meeting of Mayo County Council’s water supply and sewerage special policy committee, senior executive officer Paul Benson warned the public to be wary of people masquerading as inspectors. “Don’t let people onto your property,” he advised. “There will be no inspections before 2013. “You will get advance notice from the local authority and the inspector will have identification.” For the next three months it costs just €5 to register your tank. After September the fee goes up to €50. The need for grant-aid to address issues of affordability where tanks require work was again raised. No decision has been made at ministerial level on funding but the proposal is under ongoing review. Councillor Johnny O’Malley pointed out that not every septic tank would be inspected. They will mostly take place where houses are near water use for human consumption, and that was something he welcomed. It was commonsense. There are septic tanks that aren’t working properly and not all in old homes - and that was outrageous and needed to be sorted out. Financial aid for genuine cases was something he agreed with. Senior engineer Mr. Noel Burke said priority would be given to the protection of drinking water initially.

BA Interior Architecture students, was a variety of plans for the repurposing of the prominent building which incorporates the Embassy Rooms, the Belfry Bar and Toffs nightclub. Throughout the year students had travelled to London, Amsterdam and Dublin to research city centre social housing projects and learn from the mistakes as well as the success stories they witnessed. In London they visited Balfron Tower, the 27-storey housing block which was designed by Erno Goldfinger in the 1960’s and has featured in a number of film and TV productions, often to portray urban deprivation. The students were challenged to create a convivial community atmosphere with a focus on integration while taking advantage of the city centre location and its nearby amenities. “We wanted to create an alternative to the so-called suburban dream”, explained fourth year Interior Architecture student An-

thony Murphy (23) from Cloonfad Co Roscommon. His classmate Sarah Foley (23) from Ballymurray Co Roscommon said the key was inclusivity and integration. “It was also important to make good use of the site which is beside Sligo Abbey, has views of the Garavogue River and is convenient to Doorly Park”. Fourth year student Shane Colreavy from Maugherow, Co Sligo said that as the community aspect was important, he incorporated a restaurant and shop in his plans. “Social housing must be integrated, not segregated or separated from the rest of the community,” he said. His plan provided for a mix of social and privately owned housing. Lecturer Cliona Brady said the students had successfully highlighted how important a sense of place was. “They managed to create something specific to Sligo with historic and cultural references,” she explained.”We did not want people sitting in apartments which could just as easily be located in Dublin or anywhere else.” The lecturer said that given the number of landmark buildings which have fallen into disrepair in Sligo, the challenge for students was to repurpose an existing building in a sustainable way. Third year Interior Architecture students showcased their plans for an eco tourism hostel in Co Leitrim. James Huxley, from Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim incorporated an antifracking theme in his plan for a eco tourism hostel near Manorhamilton. First year BA Interior Design stu-

The Interior Design students were asked to design a restaurant and reception desk for Drumcliffe Church, one of Co Sligo’s best known tourist sites where the poet W B Yeats is buried. Polish-born Patrycja Cwienk whose family live in Portlaoise was inspired by Yeats’ work . “I was interested in fine art but moved to Sligo when I heard about the Interior Design course. I have really enjoyed first year”, she said. Lecturer Emmet O’Doherty said Interior Design students do a number of multi-disciplinary projects during the year with civil engineering and quantity surveying students. “We visited Berlin this year - visiting a European city opens the students’ eyes to different buildings and different styles”. He explained that Interior Design graduates will be qualified for jobs in museum design, lighting design, the design of exhibition spaces, television and film scenography and also for some domestic work. Graduates of the Interior Architecture course are equipped to work with organisations and practices specialising in architectural, interior architectural and interior design as well as with local authorities, media and performing arts, galleries and museums. THE town and district of Collooney was shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic death of a 26-year old motorcyclist in an accident last weekend. Eamon Gaffney of Knockbeg, Collooney, died tragically when his motorcycle hit a ditch at Doonmarray, Ballygawley, at 8.20 p.m. on Thursday night last. He was removed to Sligo General Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before 10 pm. No other person was involved. Eamon is the son of Seamus and Rose Gaffney of Knockbeg, Collooney. His remains were reposed at his brother Shane’s home in Old Street, Collooney from 2 p.m. on Saturday, with removal at 12.45pm on Sunday to the Church of the Assumption, Collooney for Mass of the Resurrection at 1pm, with interment afterwards in St Nathy’s Cemetery, Collooney.

Clarification We would like to point out that The Courthouse Restaurant, Kinlough, is still under the same management and ownership of Pierre. An article in our July Edition, which featured the Maestro Restaurant, Manorhamilton, may have given the impression that was not the case.

Senator fined after boarding train without ticket GALWAY Senator Fidelma Healy Eames is facing a €100 fine after getting onto an intercity train without a valid ticket. She last week admitted to being ticketless when boarding the 6.50am train from Athenry to Dublin on Thursday morning of last week. A statement released by the

party last week on her behalf said that she was in a rush when she boarded the train and she thought she could buy a ticket on board. She said she had done this previously and on recent occasions. When approached by a Revenue Protection Officer on the

Irish Rail service, Ms HealyEames was asked for ID and produced her Seanad card. However when she offered to buy a ticket from him she was informed that this was not possible and was fined €100. It's understood Senator Eames will be appealing the fine.

IT Sligo students contribute to protection of Sligo’s heritage

Pictured at the presentation of the Sligo Gaol drawings are the Sligo County Heritage Officer, Siobhan Ryan, some of the students involved in the project, Darragh Mc Menamin, Kieran Mulhern, Trevor Nee, Conal Gilmore, IT Sligo lecturer, Rowan Watson, and Donal Tinney, County Librarian. Siobhan Ryan, Heritage Office with Sligo County Council, said “There are currently no drawings of the interior of this historic building, so these survey drawings are a very useful public resource. There are many historic buildings in Sligo currently without surveys”.

ecently published reports from the leading parenting groups around the main European cities have brought with them considerable outrageous reactions from well- meaning parents. These reports focus on the growing phenomenon of ‘pushy parents’, as a French father was forced to admit that he drugged his children's tennis opponents in a desperate attempt to ensure success. These often high-achieving Mums and Dads who are driving their children to succeed - at all costs are also incurring numerous detriments to their own children’s quality of living. So what are the golden rules to prevent this occurring? ‘Thou shalt not impose thy ambitions on thy child’ The renowned statement from generations passed insists that one of the most devastating behaviours of parents is to attempt to live your own life through the life of your child. What are the ultimate consequences of such an apparently harmless, all too often unwilling circumstance? A recent conversation with a family friend details the pressurised feeling experienced by Shane as he attempted to fulfil his Father’s desire to see ‘a distinguished Medical figure’ within the

Pushy Parents

family. The main obstacle, overlooked by his well- meaning Father is Shane’s considerable fear of blood and indeed, all things hospital related. As a result, after a demanding seven year University period, Shane completed his degree much to the delight of his enthusiastic Dad who had himself, at the age of twenty three, been forced to drop out of Medical School due to a lack of finance. Unbeknownst to Mr S as he applauded loudly while watching his oldest son receive his Degree on the great stage of Trinity College Dublin, Shane was more excited by the upcoming job vacancies in the local restaurant. Finally an opportunity to pursue his own ambitions as a Chef, after a needless seven year stress- fuelled University stint. ‘Thou shalt be supportive no matter what’ Recent publications by the leading British swim schools have requested that parents remain outside of the pool area whilst their children partake in various water sports. The reasons for such an apparently ludicrous demand are in fact, remarkably simple. Reports of abusive remarks from over involved parents include incredible torrents of criticism sometimes aimed even at their own child who they accuse of un-

derperforming, despite their tender years. This contrasts sharply with the stereotypical portrayal of parents as supportive and positive influences in their children’s lives, whilst encouraging them to reach for the stars whilst at the same subtly recognizing their limits. ‘Thou shalt acknowledge thy child's fears’ One of the most important roles of a parent is to recognize their child as just that, a child. Not an invincible mini- adult. The recognition of the obstacle of fear in the life of a child is paramount to their successful surmounting of the fear no matter how irrational it may appear. Such fears should never be dismissed as petty or silly as they all too often are according to numerous child psychologists. ‘Thy child shalt have goals besides winning’ Understandably each parent longs to see their own children succeed in whatever they choose to pursue as a hobby, however the words of my own Grandad ring particularly true as he insists that ‘the benefits of losing far outweigh the positives of consistent, uninterrupted winning.’ For this reason it is es-

sential that parents ensure that children recognize the wider advantages of partaking in all activities and strive to fulfil their own personal aims as opposed to complete focus on the overall victory. Is it wrong to be a pushy parent? The answer to this widely debated question depends on the extent of pushiness employed. Many parents wish for their child to excel in one or more areas of their life. However it is when this encouragement and

motivation becomes forceful to fulfil the parent’s dreams for the child, regardless of the child’s own feelings that I believe a clear line must be drawn. This will ensure that in place of the seven or so training sessions attended by various children on a weekly basis they will be afforded the opportunity to be just that- children and embrace the old glories of really playingclimbing trees, make believe houses and friendly football games.

What is the free Pre-School Year in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)? The ECCE is a new scheme designed to give children access to a free Pre-School Year of appropriate programme-based activities in the year before they start primary school. Participation in a pre-school programme provides children with their first formal experience of early learning, the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of pre-school are more likely to be ready for school and a formal learning and social environment. Will my child be eligible? The ECCE is open to all children aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1 September each year. To avail of the free pre-school year in January 2010, children must have

been born between 2 February 2005 and 30 June 2006. To avail of the year in September 2010, children must have been born between 2 February 2006 and 30 June 2007. Where can I enrol my child for the free PreSchool Year? There are nearly 5,000 pre-school services notified to the Health Service Executive (HSE) or registered with the Irish Montessori Educational Board (IMEB). All of these are eligible to apply to participate in the scheme. A list of those accepted under the scheme will be available for parents from their local City and County childcare Committee from October 2009. Parents can contact listed services in their area at that time to arrange for enrolment. If your child is already attending a pre-school service, or will be from September 2009, whether it is a playschool or a full or parttime daycare service, you can also ask the service provider if they plan to participate in the scheme.

How is the pre-school year funded? Services participating in the scheme will be paid a capitation fee for each qualifying child enrolled. In return, the service will be required to provide an appropriate programme of activities in early childhood care and education (ECCE) which will be free to parents. While the pre-school year will normally commence in September of each year, a shorter period will apply for those attending from January 2010. How will the pre-school year be provided? Children attending a full or part-time service will normally receive pre-school year sessions for 2 hours 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week over 50 weeks. To facilitate parents whose children attend a full or part-time service for only 3 days a week, the service may provide 3 weekly sessions of 3 hours 45 minutes each day. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be €48.50. Children availing of the free pre-school year during January to August 2010 will receive 35 rather than 50 weeks of free pre-school. Children attending a sessional playschool service, typically provided for about 3 hours each day, will normally receive pre-school year sessions for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week over 38 weeks. Sessional playschool services which are unable to open 5 days a week, can apply to provide the pre-school year in the form of 3 hours 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week over 41 weeks. Children availing of the free pre-school year during January to August 2010 will receive 23 rather than 38 weeks of free preschool. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be €64.50. Some sessional playschools may choose to open for 50 weeks in the year rather than 38, in which case they will provide daily sessions of 2 hours 15 minutes, and full or part-time services may choose to also provide sessional playschool services in which case the 38 week model will apply. Will parents have to pay additional charges to the service for the free Pre-School Year? No, services which participate in the scheme must provide the pre-school year free to parents. A service may charge parents for additional services as long as (a) these are provided on an optional basis and (b) appropriate programme based activities are provided to children not participating in an optional activity. For example, a service can offer an additional

activity such as music or dance which parents can choose to avail of for a charge. If they do not wish to avail of this activity, their child must continue to be provided with an appropriate alternative activity. Services can also charge for hours which are additional to the free pre-school provision e.g. if a child is in a full-day service for 10 hours, a parent should expect to pay for the 7 hours, 45 minutes per day which are not free. An additional 30 minutes per day, which would be charged for, may be offered to a child in a sessional playschool. Outings, birthday parties, snacks, etc can also be charged for, provided they are optional for parents.

NATHAN CARTER AT THE ROYAL NATHAN Carter (the early years) is the brightest young singing star to hit Ireland for many years. Here is the story so far. Nathan was born in the City of Liverpool. At the age of four he found his love for music and was given a piano accordion, which he quickly mastered. At age seven, Nathan started to enter Fleadh Ceoil Competitions in Accordion and Singing. At 15, he won the All Ireland Title for Traditional Singing. Nathan was determined to seek a career in the Music Industry, and at the tender age of 16 years, decided to leave school and follow his dream. His début album “Starting Out” contained such Country Classics as ‘Working Man;’ ‘Look At Us;’ ‘40 ‘Shades Of Green’ and Irish Standards ‘Isle Of Innisfree;’ ‘Carrickfergus’ and ‘Erin Gra Moi Chroi’ - both Traditional Classics. “Starting Out” was a terrific success for a first album and it opened many doors that would otherwise be firmly locked, to someone so young. As a result of the popularity of “Starting Out,” Nathan was invited to perform, on two of the famous Cruises and at Resort Residencies organised by Enjoy Travel. This experience led to invitations to perform, with great aplomb at high-profile dancing and con-

cert venues throughout the UK. In his first year on the music scene, Nathan was invited to ‘open’ for such Giants of the Irish entertainment industry as Tommy Fleming, Philomena Begley, Big Tom, Jimmy Buckley, Susan McCann and Mike Denver. In February 2008, Nathan was pleasantly surprised to be invited by the organisers, to attend The Irish World Awards Gala Night, at the Galtymore Dance Club, Cricklewood. Nathan was even more astounded, when he was announced as the “The Best Male Newcomer, Award Winner” for 2007. He then sang the Don Long's classic “Never Be The Sun.” The packed audience ‘brought the house down,’ with rapturous applause and much screaming, from the ‘young women’ of all ages! Such, was the demand for more, from the “The Best Male Newcomer of 2007” that the James Peake Band, duly invited Nathan back on stage to perform a set, which satisfied the enormous demands, of his new and adoring fans. 2008 continued to be a very busy time for Nathan Carter; he built on his success, with his second album “On The Road.” Nathan created quite a stir amongst radio presenters, with many top DJ’s choosing his second offering as their Album of the Week. Pre-recorded and On Air, inter-

views followed at stations up and down the country and continue to do so. The future is even brighter for Nathan Carter, autumn 2009, will see him establish residency in Northern Ireland. No surprise there then; since his folks originally came from Newry. There will be the launch of the new Northern Ireland based, Nathan Carter Band. “The Future is Bright” for The Nathan Carter Band, the brightest young singing star, on the horizon will be coming your way soon. Nathan Carter is the “surprise package” that all of Ireland’s Country Music fans have been waiting for. Tickets are available from the Royal Theatre Box Office on 0818 300 000. Tickets are €15.

Spa Treatments at home

Home-made Body Scrubs Body scrubs should be a part of skin care routine. Not only do they slough off dead skin cells, they increase circulation and leave the skin smooth and moisturized. They are used to prevent ingrown hairs before they happen by opening the pores and allowing hair follicles to freely develop new hairs above the skin's surface. Homemade body scrubs have one advantage: they can be customized so they provide the best effects. You can change the fragrances by changing the essential oils you add to them.

Facial Masks They hydrate, moisturize, exfoliate and nourish your face. Each facial mask recipe is unique in its ability to bring life and glow to your face.

Coffee Body Scrub Ingredients 2 cups of coarsely ground coffee 1/2 cup raw sugar 2-3 Tbs of baby oil / olive oil Mix all ingredients together in a plastic container. Take a hot shower to moisten your skin and open your pores. Using wide, circular motions, rub the coffee exfoliater onto your skin with strong, even pressure. Shower off excess and pat dry your skin. Your skin will feel revitalized and soft, so much so you will look forward to bath time in future!

Avocado Face Mask Ingredients 1 avocado 1 tsp of apple vinegar 1 egg white 3 tsp of olive oil Peel and mash avocado and start adding the rest of the ingredients. Egg white should be beaten before you put it in. When the mass is done, apply to face and wash off after 20

Chocolate Body Scrub Ingredients 3tbs of cocoa powder 1 cup of brown sugar 1 tsp of vanilla oil (extract will work) Olive oil as needed Mix all the ingredients except for olive oil. Start adding olive oil, gradually until the mixture starts looking like a paste. It should be applied on moist skin; the best time is after you took a shower. It will help the skin cells slough off faster. Use circular motion and massage gently using your fingertips. Rinse off with warm water Almond-Oatmeal Scrub Almond meal and oatmeal slough off dead skin cells, as sage tones. Whole-milk yogurt reinforces with the oil naturally released from the almonds during scrubbing to replenish the skin's natural moisture. Ingredients 2/3 cup coarse ground almonds 1/3 cup dry fine oatmeal ½ tsp dried sage plain full-fat yogurt as needed Add almonds, oatmeal, and sage to food processor or blender and grind on pulse until they reach the consistency of course meal. Keep covered and cool in an airtight container until ready for use. Upon each use, take medium-sized handful (around 1/4 cup) of the mixture and combine with enough yoghurt to form a thick paste. Rub gently over skin with a washcloth or loofah sponge and rinse with cool water. Follow with gentle moisturizer.

Strawberry Face Mask Ingredients 1/2 cup of strawberry 1/4 cornstarch. Mix strawberries and cornstarch together to make a paste. Apply to face. Leave for 30 minute rinse off with cool water.

minutes or so. This mask provides great moisture for skin, making it soft and elastic.

treatment to use poolside, where lounging is assuring. Rinse off with tepid water, or an outdoor shower.

Peach Mask Ingredients 1 ripe peach 1 egg white 1 tsp unflavoured full fat yogurt Peel and pit the peach. Blend together with egg white and yogurt until smooth. Pat gently onto face. Leave on 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water. The Peach Mask is especially good for saggy skin as it tightens the skin and helps to fight wrinkles.

Chocolate bath 1 cup of unscented bubble bath 1/3 cup of unsweetened soy milk 3oz of grated or powdered dark chocolate Heat the soy milk and add in the grated or powdered chocolate. Stir well until melted and blended, but do not boil. Allow to cool. Mix well again just before adding to your bath.

nsomnia is defined as “difficulty getting to sleep, and/or premature awakening with inability to regain sleep”. It affects one in five of us at some time in our lives. An occasional bad night does not have any realnegative effect on us, but prolonged lack of quality sleep will play havoc with our immune systems ability to detoxify, heal and repair our body, and to our ability to cope with life’s ups and downs. We will start showing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, irritability, aggression, lack of concentration etc. Sleeping tablets are NOT the answer, as they send us artificially into delta (deepest stage 4 sleep) bypassing alpha, and theta relaxation and dream sleep. 80% of our sleep should be in REM (dream state) in order to awaken refreshed, detoxified and rejuvenated. So what can we do? There are many natural alternative ways to help your body relax into sleep. Coffee, Tea, fizzy drinks, chocolate and sugar all stimu-

late the body. Substances found in these items block the breakdown and reabsorbtion of adrenalin (stress hormone). Cut out or minimise all of these and you will see results. Cut out salt from your diet. Food contains natural salt. Salt constricts our blood vessels, raises blood pressure, and makes the heart work harder as a result, over use of salt is often associated with insomnia. B vitamins are used up when stressed.. B’s feed the adrenal glands, which calms down the production of adrenalin, and reduces stress as a result. Taking a good quality B Complex daily will help alleviate insomnia. The amino acid Tryptophan is found complex carbohydrates. It is a precursor of the hormone Serotonin-essential in allowing the body to sleep. Tryptophan can also be taken in the form of 5HTP supplements. Essential oil of Lavender, Chamomile, Jasmine, Naroli, Ylang ylang, and Marjoram are aromas which induce relaxation. Use in a bedtime bath, or in a burner or diffuser, or on a tissue on your pillow.

Get plenty of physical exercise each day. Not only does exercise burn off stress hormones, but it also releases endorphins, and encephalin (feel good hormones) into your system, and create balance.Learn how to relax and switch off. For example, Yoga, Meditation, Hypnotherapy, Dance class, Music, Sound and Light frequency treatment etc.. If you are living in a stressful situation, of have unresolved issues, then a course of coaching to is a must. Create a sacred space. Make your bedroom into your sanctuary. Use it only for rest, relaxation, and sleeping. Do not watch TV, or read in this room-do that before you go to bed. Learn to associate this room with complete tranquillity. Play soft music, decorate it in pastel colours, and surround yourself with calming, tranquil images and knickknacks. Do not despair. There are many highly effective therapies available for those of you who are still struggling.

We give a personal guarantee that we will get to the root cause of your problem, and we are totally committed to helping our clients achieve their goals.

Blur premiere songs on Twitter

tech news & science

Apple loses in Samsung tablet case

S

REUNITED rock act Blur have adopted an unusual way of premiering their new songs by performing them in a live show via Twitter. The quartet sent a link to a live stream as they performed from a balcony at a secret location to unveil the first of the songs Under The Westway. The band, who last reunited for gigs in 2009, have been working on at least two new tracks as they prepare for a headline show next month. Throughout Monday band members teased fans by posting images online as their equipment was set up, as well as a series of slogans. They included "the flash of a blade is one less getting paid", "it's smoke and mirrors until the autocue starts" and "I stood watching comets on their lonesome trails". At 6.16pm the band burst into life with a slow, ringing piano and a whining guitar with a track which hinted at the band's sound in the early 1990s, with a hint of early 70s David Bowie. The group - fronted by Damon Albarn, who has gone on to set up numerous side projects including Gorillaz - will be performing in Hyde Park next month in a show which coincides with the Olympic closing ceremony. In a question and answer session via Twitter, the band confirmed the concert would be a career-spanning set "including the new tracks". Asked how it felt to be playing together again guitarist Graham Coxon said: "Like a silk smoking jacket." And in response to one fan who said she was wiping away tears, bass player Alex James responded: "I feel quite emotional too."

amsung's Galaxy tablet computer is not "cool" enough to be confused with Apple's iPad, a judge has ruled. The American electronics giant had argued the Samsung Galaxy Tab was too similar to their own product, but the claim was dismissed on Monday at London's High Court. Judge Colin Birss QC said: "They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design. They are not as cool." He said consumers were not likely to get the two tablet computers mixed up and ruled the Samsung tablets do not infringe Apple's registered design. The judge said that while the Tab and iPad look similar from the front, he noted differences in the thickness and details on the backs of the devices. He said he had questioned if those two differences were enough to over-

come the similarity of the front of the devices and the overall shape of them. Apple had argued that the front face and overall shape were the most important factors because the informed user would spend the most time looking at the front and holding it. The judge said he did regard the overall shape as very significant but said there there was a very obvious visual similarity at the front. He said: "However, to the informed user (which at that stage I was not) these screens do not stand out to anything like the same extent. The front view of the Apple design takes its place amongst its kindred prior art." Apple has been given 21 days to appeal against the decision. A spokeswoman for Samsung welcomed the ruling and accused Apple of "excessive legal claims". An Apple spokesman said he would not comment specifically

on today's ruling but reiterated the company's earlier claims against Samsung: "It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest

products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging."

iPhone tracks down missing man

POLICE have used an iPhone app to find a missing man, a force has said. Officers in Gloucestershire Police's control room were able to help reunite a missing man with his worried family by using the free app. On July 2, police received a call from a woman reporting that her husband was missing and that she was very concerned for his

welfare. The wife told police the man was in his car and had taken his iPhone with him. Quickly officers began physical searches for the man, which involved a lot of police resources but, as the man's wife could recall log in details for his phone, they were able to access an app called Find My iPhone to help with

the search. By using the app, Sergeant James Wyatt in the control room was able to locate and track the man's phone on a map and direct officers involved in the search directly to him. Inspector Arman Mathieson, who works in the control room, said: "We will always do everything within our power to make sure individuals are kept safe from harm. By using the app when we were first made aware of the concerns for this man we were able to respond directly to where the male was located, ultimately leading to a man's life being saved, via an efficient and dynamic approach." Gloucestershire Police also said this and similar apps could help see stolen or lost iPhones and iPads returned to their rightful owner. "It's important for members of our community to take personal responsibility for valuable technology like mobile phones and iPads," Inspector Mathieson said. "Downloading this type of app can help save you from having to replace an expensive piece of kit if it is lost of stolen. It will also help lead police to the minority within our community who decided to break the law and help see them arrested and put before the courts."

World's tallest Lego tower constructed

Meet the twins born in different countries

The world's tallest Lego tower has been constructed by model makers at Legoland

M

easuring a dizzying 32m (105ft), it took hundreds of volunteers four days to create the toy tower, using over 500,000 Lego bricks. Groups of Lego enthusiasts helped construct the tower comprising of 160 different coloured sections at ground level before they were hoisted into place using a crane. The resort's divisional director, Sue Kemp, told ITV: 'We are delighted to reclaim the record for Britain. We last held it in 2008 when it was a mere 29.26 metres tall. 'We’re very grateful to the hundreds of people who helped create the tower, which is made from over 500,000 bricks. It took four days to build and is certainly an impressive feat.' To complete the record attempt Lego master builder Per K Knudsen finally placed nine Team GB Lego mini figures on top of the tower. The tower beats the previous record set in Seoul earlier in year and reclaims the record previously held by the resort in 2008.

Twitter helps reunite owner with dog who jumped on a train to Dublin A runaway dog who took a 20-mile train trip to Dublin has been reunited with its owner after a Twitter campaign. PET owner Deirdre Anglin was distraught after her Jack Russell terrier Patch went missing from its home in Kilcock, County Kildare. The fugitive canine eventually turned up in the Irish capital after wandering down to the local train station and hopping aboard an early morning service heading for Dublin. After being discovered by train staff, Irish Rail tweeted a picture of Patch with the accompanying caption: 'Lost dog!' It was quickly retweeted hundreds of times, taking just 30 minutes to find its way into Ms Anglin's Twitter feed. She quickly replied: 'That's my dog!' 'I was in shock when I heard he was found on the train. I rushed down to pick him up and we got the train home – so he was on the train twice today,' she added. 'He would never go missing and he definitely hasn’t gone as far as Dublin before! ‘We have four dogs at home and all of them are family dogs so if one goes off, the family get very upset and the other dogs were missing him as well.' Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny added: ' It was good she showed up so quickly, because the staff in the office were getting quite attached to him.'

TWINS are normally born minutes – if not hours – apart, but Dylan Joseph and Hannah Rose Fox will be able to say they were born in different countries. The youngsters were welcomed to the world in England and Scotland last Sunday as their parents, Donna Keenan and Joe Fox, settled down to watch the Euro 2012 final. With no time to get to the hospital, paramedics were forced to deliver Dyland on the living room floor. But as the twins were being born four weeks early, medical staff pulled out all the stops to get Ms Keenan to hospital in time for Hannah’s arrival. The 28-year-old endured an hour-long trip to Borders General Hospital in Melrose, Scotland, before her daughter made an appearance hours later. ‘I’m still getting over the shock of what’s happened,’ said Ms Keenan, of Wooler, Northumberland. ‘It’s all such a blur. ‘Joe and I already have a daughter, Jessica, who’s two, and I was in labour with her for 30 hours so never imagined the twins would come so quickly. ‘I had already been up to the Borders hospital and come home when I started to feel a bit strange and that’s when my waters went.’ Dylan was born at about 8pm, weighing 2.6kg (5lb 13oz), while his sister tipped the scales at 2.2kg (4lb 14oz) when she arrived at 11.40pm. Mr Fox, 24, who was at his partner’s side for both births, said: ‘We’re still getting our heads around it. ‘We knew the babies were going to be born in different countries but there was also a chance they’d be born on different days because it was so late. ‘I joked to Donna that she should hold on as long as possible but I only mentioned it once and don’t think it went down too well!’

n Saturday the 4th of August 2012 the 66th annual North Sligo Agricultural Show will be held in Grange. The North Sligo Agricultural Show has a long tradition within the local community. The first North Sligo Agricultural Show actually took place on Wednesday, September 12, 1945. However, due to the ‘foot and mouth’ crisis a few years ago, the annual show had to be cancelled. During 1945 Grange village was very much isolated and had no running water or electricity. There were very few cars or tractors. Nevertheless, the first show attracted 1,150 entries. There were up to 100 classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, agricultural produce, woodwork, homecrafts, knitting, needlework, crochet, poultry and eggs,

cattle, horses, sheep and donkeys. Since then the show has grown from strength to strength, which has been possible through local community support and participation of volunteers. Many agricultural shows have run into difficulties in recent years, with some disappearing altogether, but the North Sligo event is continuing to be run very successfully. The committee are hoping that the weather, Declan Nerney and the new competions can continue to bring a big crowd this year. The show gets under way at 11am with the cattle and sheep judging, followed by the confined sheep classes starting at 11:30 for . This year there are several horse and pony classes commencing at 12pm and donkey showing at 2pm. The afternoon programme gets underway at 12:30pm in the Show field. There will be the usual classes in agricultural produce such as vegetables, flowers, baking, photography, crafts, etc. in addition to poultry exhibitions.

free buses from Car Parks to the Showgrounds. The Gymkhana itself has a prize fund of €6000 and has 2 arenas, one for horses and one for ponies. A measure of how Bonniconlon Show has grown can be gleaned from the fact it is

now credited with having 7 All Ireland Championships Competitions – more than any other similar show in Ireland. Even if you are not at the show you can soak up the atmosphere. Midwest Radio will broadcast live from the show on the day. And the activity doesn’t end in the field.....Mike Denver and his band play afterwards in the Grove Hall for the Bonniconlon Show Dance. A special word of gratitude must go to the exhibitors, competitors, stewards, committee and landowners who each year make the event bigger and better than ever. This day would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors who come from near and far and the committee wish to sincerely thank all of them who have contributed to make the Bonniconlon Show the successful event it now is.
