Calls for second Registration Plate Car sales slump across west
D
Here come the brides...
ESPITE a bright start to the new year when Irish motorists purchased more new vehicles than the same period of last year a major slump in April has given rise to major fears for the industry, particularly in the West. The Society for the Irish Motor Industry had announced that new car sales fell by 22% in April, compared with the same period last year, with a resultant year-to-date drop of 7%. According to Alan Nolan, Director-General of the SIMI . . .”the peak selling period is now over. Because of the seasonal nature of car sales, sales will continue to decline month on month for the remainder of the year”. As a consequence, the SIMI is now calling on the Government to introduce a second registration plate mid-year. This would create a second sales peak and would maintain and stabilise jobs. "A second registration peak mid year would not only assist the Motor Industry but would increase employment, stabilise existing jobs, increase tax revenues for the Government and also add value to motorists's trade-ins." Currently, a car purchased in December is valued the same as a car purchased in January, a second plate will add value to those bought later in the year. Continued on Page 2

Calls for second Registration Plate Continued from front page
"Experiences in other markets indicate that the change in registration plate will generate extra sales and extra Government revenue. Applying this to Ireland, we would see Government revenues increase by over €20m in the first year of the change alone", said Mr. Nolan. "If there was, like in the UK, a second registration plate in June, the industry would now be gearing up for
another busy sales period. But because of the current system, retailers now have to wait until next January, another eight months, for any potential improvement in sales.” Industry experts also feel that the introduction of a second registration plate would help stabilize sales patterns throughout the twelve months and avert the huge sales splurge at the start of the year. “80% of all new cars
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COURSE

are sold in the first half of the year. What this means is that staff who are taken on for the busy first quarter, often have to be let go mid year because of the lack of activity throughout the rest of the year." The drop in sales is even more pronounced the in the West. During the month of April only 116 cars were sold in Mayo compared with 156 for April 2011. In County Sligo 57 new cars were sold by car dealers, falling over 40% from the figure of 99 last year. A similar drop was recorded in Galway, down from 371 last year to 210 in April, 2011, while in Roscommon, according to the CSO, 60 new cars were registered in April 2012, compared with 71 last year. While the CSO’s figures, which show a decrease of 16% in new private cars licensed in April, 2012 (11,171 down to 9,388), are less startling that the SIMI’s, which record the number of cars sold, the overall picture is particularly gloomy and is expected to worsen as the year progresses. Some dealers feel that the household charge and water charges have impacted on people’s confidence and there’s no young buying market, only older buyers. And the industry isn’t optimistic for next year either with the fear that superstitious buyers may be reluctant to go for 2013 registrations. The CSO recently revealed that in the first six months of 2011, 1,300 jobs were created; however, in each subsequent quarter of the year, there was a decline in employment. Mr. Nolan strongly advocates a second registration plate:

Southern Tenant Folk Union for Mayo, Sligo & Donegal THE UK’S hottest Roots Collective Southern Tenant Folk Union will make a return visit to Ireland this week for a breakneck tour of Ireland. Included in its itinerary will be performances in Mayo, Sligo and Donegal. The Scottish band’s fourth album ‘Pencaitland’ was released in Ireland in November 2011 with a triumphant tour of the country. This forthcoming return tour starting on this Thursday, May 10th, will also visit venues in counties Antrim, Down, Kildare, Limerick, Westmeath and will
culminate in a concert in Co. Dublin in the Seamus Ennis Centre on May 19th. Edinburgh-based Southern Tenant Folk Union is now one of the most highly rated folk and bluegrass outfits in the UK today and won Americana Artist of the Year in 2011. The group was formed by BELFAST BORN fivestring banjo player Pat McGarvey in 2006 and take their name from the groundbreaking multi-racial union of sharecroppers and non-landowning tenant farmers founded in Arkansas in the
1930’s (the Southern Tenant Farmers’ Union). Their newest album ‘Pencaitland’ continues the band’s trip into the more interesting areas of acoustic sound, word and tone. A critical smash hit in the UK, it has gained a raft of 4 star reviews and media attention with The Guardian saying ‘The band knock up a fierce, raw and earthy music that is the stuff of Mumford & Sons' dreams’ and Uncut Magazine declaring ‘Pencaitland their most serious and ambitious album yet’. ‘Pencaitland’, a career high, continues the collective’s journey through eclectic and acoustic soundscapes whilst harvesting their natural folk feel for this timeless music. See them live in Ireland May 10th to 19th.

Support urged for “Race the Ras”

I
T’S countdown time for the “Race the Ras” event, a major fund-raising drive being organized by Ballina Lions Club, in conjunction with Lions clubs in Belmullet, Castlebar, Claremorris, Westport and Sligo. “Race the Ras” takes place from 20th to 27th May and is run in conjunction with “The Ras” itself, which sees professional cyclists from all over the world clock up 1200 km over eight stages. “Race the Ras” allows almost 150 amateur cyclists the opportunity to race for charity before the professionals begin. The Ballina Club are organizing a group of
cyclists to cycle the 135 km route from Westport to Bundoran on May 23rd to raise funds for Aware, and are determined to present a cheque for €10,000 to the organisation’s representatives at the conclusion of the stage in Bundoran. Project leader Mattie Coleman, who has put Trojan work into the event, has commended the Lions clubs in the region and all others who have given their support and says the project is certainly gaining momentum. It now needs the final push. Cyclists were required to raise €200 and the entry fee of €50 includes a “Race the Ras” jersey. Company names can be printed on the back of the jersey for €250.00. A host of former and current top GAA stars joined forces in Croke Park recently for the official launch of the charity cycle by broadcasting legend Michael O’Muiracheartaigh. This is the second year of the race and Race the Rás is kindly sponsored by Tesco Ireland and supported by AIB, Elvery’s and Renault amongst others. Among those who have confirmed they will support or take part in the cycle are: Declan Darcy (Leitrim and Dublin), three-time All-Star, Eddie Brennan, Derek Lyng, James McGarry (Kilkenny), Willie Joe Padden, John Maughan (Mayo), Kevin Cassidy, Martin McHugh, Tony Boyle (Donegal), Ollie Canning. Sean O Domhnaill (Galway), Tom Brewster (Fermanagh) rugby legend Mick Galwey, Paul Earley (Roscommon), Colin Regan (Leitrim), Evan Kelly (Meath), Ronan Carolan (Cavan), Eamon O’Hara (Sligo), and Ciaran Whelan, Coman Goggins and Paul Clarke (Dublin). Chairman of Aware, David Carton, described this event as an important one for the organisation. “This is a nationwide event and depression is something which affects every community in Ireland. In many ways, the challenging nature of the Rás echoes the challenge so many individuals and families
face when they journey through depression.” Even if you are unable to contribute through official channels you can still donate to this worthy cause (AWARE) by contributing to the following Bank Account: Bank: AIB Bank, Pearse St., Ballina, Co. TO some it might be a useless statistic, but it has been revealed that Co. Leitrim has the most rural population in the State with only 10.4 percent of the population living in urban areas. The information comes from the latest round of Census statistics released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The findings also showed that Carrick-on-Shannon is the largest town in the county with 3,980 persons recorded as living within a four kilometre square area. This means there was a 25.8 percent increase for the population in the County Town over the previous five years. Next highest is Manorhamilton with a population of 1,336, up 15.4 percent on 2006 Census figures. The findings also revealed that while 1,400 Leitrim residents moved in year to April 2011, the vast majority of these (866) actually only moved to other locations within the county. The study also showed that the majority of those moving lived in rented accommodation with only 89 of the 632 Leitrim households who moved between April 2010 and April 2011, stating that they had bought their new home with a mortgage or loan.

Nurses fear for safety in UCHG “crisis”
N
urses have called on hospital management to re-open beds in University Hospital Galway as a matter of urgency to relieve serious overcrowding. There are now concerns about patient
safety in the hospital where patients are left on trolleys in inpatient wards while 17 beds remain closed due to lack of staffing. On Wednesday last, there were 29 patients waiting on trolleys making it
the tenth day in a row that the situation in the Emergency Department was described as ‘a crisis’. Hospital management had declared a ‘full capacity’ protocol ten days ago, a protocol which is usually only declared during high emergency alerts such as a major accident. The crisis has led to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation calling on hospital management to reopen beds in both UHG and in Merlin Park to relieve the pressure on patients and staff. There are 17 beds closed in UHG and 91 closed in Merlin Park Hospital . A spokeswoman for the INMO said: “The problem cannot be solved by placing extra beds on in-patient wards. This is a tried, flawed and failed practice of the past which should never be revisited. “INMO members in the hospital are seriously concerned regarding the health and safety of patients. There are wards in the hospital with insufficient staff to deliver basic nursing care and the situation is now causing untold human suffering for patients and making it increasingly difficult for members to practice safe care.” The INMO’s trolley watch shows that 354 patients have spent time on trolleys in April, awaiting an in-patient bed.
Luke “Ming” Flanagan annoys Councillors with call for donations
COUNTROVERSIAL Roscommon Independent TD Luke “Ming” Flanagan continues to make waves and has seriously annoyed councillors throughout the county with his call to donate €200 from their conference expenses to make up a shortfall in funding for Castlerea Swimming Pool. The controversial TD has been accused of "attracting publicity and fanfare" and acting in "an abrasive manner, harming the cause he is trying to help". Deputy Flanagan said the donation by each councillor would generate sufficient funds to allow Castlerea Swimming Pool to remain open during the summer months for 92 days rather than the 56
days planned this year. Deputy Flanagan has indicated that he is willing to put €5,000 from his salary towards the €10,000 council funding shortfall and has called on councillors to also do what they can. Last year, Cllr John Murphy donated more than €5,000 of his own money to the pool to ensure that it opened throughout the summer months. Deputy Flanagan has called on every councillor to do what is best for the people of the county. "This isn't about asking councillors to put their hands into their own pocket. It is about reducing the conference money from by about €200 for each councillor,
which when you think about it, is only money that would be going to a hotel in Killarney," said Deputy Flanagan. The majority of councillors are against the proposal, with only Cllr Michael Mulligan and Cllr John Murphy publicly declaring they would be willing to support the conference reduction. Castlerea area councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice has said that while he was willing to give the money personally. "Each councillor supports local groups and I personally have no problem in putting €200 towards the pool. But I am not in favour of the public and abrasive manner that Luke has gone about this,” he said.

Shatter condemns “cyberbullying” against Sligo folk group
?
Sligo folk group Dervish
J
ustice Minister Alan Shatter has rowed in behind others in support of Sligo folk group Dervish, who were forced to pull out of a planned concert in Israel after what has been described as a concerted campaign of “cyberbullying” against them. The Minister was vociferous in his attack against the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Group (IPSG) after the band cancelled the tour planned for June, citing an “avalanche of negativity” directed towards them on social medial websites. Dervish singer Cathy Jordan said
the band members were not politically minded and were only due to go on the three-date tour at the invitation of an Israeli friend and musician called Avshalom. Ms Jordan wrote on the band's Facebook page: "In hindsight, it was very naive of me to think our motives would not be misunderstood and misrepresented." The group, who represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, said they have opted out of the tour because they were unaware there was a cultural boycott in place when they agreed to the performances. In fact, there is no
official boycott of Israel and artists are free to play in the country if they wish. Now Mr Shatter, who is Jewish, has delivered a broadside against the band's critics. "The Irish Palestinian Solidarity Group's action in directing its members to 'target' the website of the musical group Dervish in order to intimidate the group into cancelling their planned concerts in Israel is nothing other than cyberbullying. "The invitation to Dervish to perform in Israel came from a fellow musician who worked to bridge di-
vides between people through music for much of his life and the objective of the concerts was 'to promote love between two divided communities'. Mr Shatter also said it was understandable the band took the decision they did, but it was a pity it was due to bullying tactics. The IPSG should recognise the value of cultural and artistic exchanges and the contribution such events make to fostering understanding and tolerance. "It ignores the constitutional rights of Irish citizens and those who live in this State to get on with their lives, to travel and to perform around the world free from bullying, intimidation and discrimination,” he said. Dr Raymond Deane, of the IPSG, denied that there had been "negativity and venom" directed at Dervish by ISPG members.. "Rather it is the other way around. All you have to do is look at the remarks made by zionists after Dervish made the laudable decision to pull out of the tour. "We have congratulated them on their decision."
Justice Minister Alan Shatter’
Go-ahead for Ballinamore Primary Care Unit
I
T was good news last week for the people from Ballinamore who have just learned that the long-awaited Ballinamore Primary Care Unit has been given the green light by the HSE with construction expected to being by early 2013. Local councillor, Gordon Hughes, has welcomed confirmation that
the building will be progressing to construction noting that it is over 11 years since the site was acquired by the North Western Health Board. The news comes following a meeting with senior HSE officials at the HSE West Forum in Galway last week.

Cllr Hughes has also received confirmation that the expected construction time for the unit is in the region of 9 to 12 months. “This is following on from earlier news that 250,000 has been provided in he HSE Capital Plan in 2012 for the development of the unit. The tender evaluation report has also been completed. “I am delighted by this news,” said the councillor. “Over the last 11 years at various stages we have been made promises that the project would be built but now we have firm confirmation that the new facility will go ahead.” He thanked Fine Gael Deputy, Frank Feighan, for his work on the project and also paid tribute to Minister for Health Dr James Reilly. “Minister Reilly met with me and it is clear that he understood the issues regarding the need for this facility and the lack of services in the area,” said Cllr Hughes. The Ballinamore Area councillor also welcomed the news that the Dental Clinic in Ballinamore will re-
open in approximately 10 weeks. The Clinic was closed because of concern with the integrity of the structure of the dental fittings and need for replacements was identified. “It is anticipated that Ballinamore Dental Clinic will re-open in approximately 10 weeks on the completion of work,” noted Cllr Hughes.

NRA Signage Strategy Ignores Meelick, Swinford THE National Roads Authority has completely ignored the townland of Meelick, near Swinford, County Mayo, as it has erected new place name signage along the N5. Despite Meelick being the largest townland off the N5 at Swinford, the townland is not indicated at all in the new signage. Along the same route the NRA has put up a new sign for Carrabawn at a junction that leads to Lisanumera rather than to Carrabawn and there are also incidents of place names being misspelt on the new signs. The matter was discussed at a recent Swinford county council meeting and Councillor Joe Mellet sought clarification from the authority as to whether or not it had been consulted by the NRA in the erection of these new signs. The councillor said the new signage is a fiasco and he has asked Mayo county council to contact the NRA about it.

Sligo Businesses Call for “Yes” Vote THE group representing businesses in Sligo made it clear last week where they stand in the upcoming Stability Treaty Referendum. Members of IBEC in Sligo have come out in support of a Yes vote and have urged the business community generally to support this stance. At a meeting last week organised by IBEC North West, the group that represents business in the region, Aaron Forde CEO of Connacht Gold, Pat McLaughlin, Plant Manager of GSK Stiefel, and Gerry Moore of Sligo Park Hotel were among those calling for a Yes vote. Aaron Forde said a yes vote is vital to the economic interests of this country and will provide greater certainty about our economic future.

T. Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina, Co. Mayo looks set to win its second official Guinness World Record – after almost 1600 people “Rocked the Boat” together on Tuesday last, May 1, 2012. Hundreds took to the grounds of this famed all-girls secondary school to perform the well-known
‘Rock the Boat’ dance routine – surpassing the 1,428-strong record previously set. The dance event saw young and not-so-young sitting in rows and swaying to the Hues Corporation classic in a rowthe-boat motion - for over five minutes! The Snap, Craicle and Rock 2012 event, was the school’s contribution to the annual
fundraising campaign, Kellogg’s “Fun Raise 4 Kids”, which helps raise money for sick children and teenagers in Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. Event co-ordinator, Annette Leonard, said: “We are delighted that so many people got involved on the day and helped us not only break a record but also, raise

vital funds for such a worthy cause.” School Principal Mrs. Sweeney thanked all those who supported the event. “St. Mary’s has a long tradition of fundraising as part of the Fun Raise 4 Kids, and previously, Jump for Joy. We are proud to be the previous winners of the Tom Collins Memorial Trophy on many occasions, for overall national fundraising efforts. Every year, the events organised by the Transition Year students and spearheaded by Annette Leonard are innovative, fun and create a real focal point for the students. The Fun Raise 4 Kids is now one of the highlights of the school year,” she said. Mrs Sweeney formally thanked this year’s organisers, Annette Leonard, Ciaran Allen and their supporting team. She also extended her gratitude to all those who supported the event, particularly all the local national and secondary schools, the Parents Council and the entire local community for making the event such a success. While the record attempt is yet to be formally ratified by the Guinness World Records, the school is ‘confident’ it has surpassed the existing record for a Rock the Boat dance formation set in Armagh last September. If successful, this will be the second official Guinness World Record set by the school. In 2008 it was awarded its first world record for the most participants to take part in a high-heel race.
Women giving birth now older WOMEN are having children later in life with the average age of a woman giving birth now at just under 32 years, writes Breda Heffernan. New figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that the average age of mothers for registering births was 31.7 years -up slightly from the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, the average age of mothers having their first child was 29.7 years. Just over a third of all births, or 6,543 births, were outside of marriage -- but more than half of these were to unmarried parents living at the same address.

E
nterprise Ireland is holding a potential exporters workshop at the GMIT Campus in Galway on Wednesday 23 May from 9.30am-12noon where companies can hear more about the new Enterprise Ireland programme of supports aimed at getting more Irish companies exporting. As part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs 2012, this is one of a series of events Enterprise Ireland is running for pre-export and early stage exporting companies, and existing businesses seeking to explore new opportunities in export markets. The highlight of the event will be a presentation by local exporter and entrepreneur Micheál Quinn from Quinn Refrigerated Vehicles in Athenry, who will talk about his experience of building an export business and expanding into new markets. The event, which is free to attend, will also include information on the supports available to companies that are looking to export and the opportunity for one-to-one clinics with Enter-
prise Ireland executives; these must be booked in advance. An added benefit of participating will be an opportunity to attend a presentation from GMIT outlining their services to industry and avail of a tour of their innovation centres.
· Mentoring and advocate support · Access to market information · A dedicated helpdesk · Access to advice from successful exporting companies · Access to a range of Enterprise Ireland financial supports
Welcoming the initiative Barry Egan, newly appointed Director West Region, Enterprise Ireland said: “This event will introduce potential exporting companies to a series of easy to use web based tools to assess their own capability, understand what is involved in exporting and the initial steps they need to take. Help and guidance is also available through a dedicated Help Desk and through the Enterprise Ireland website, www.enterpriseireland.com/getexportready
Frank Ryan, CEO Enterprise Ireland, commented: ‘Exporting can be a valuable new source of business for companies with ambition and we know there are many Irish companies operating successfully in the Irish market that can grow new business through finding new customers overseas. I am optimistic that there is enormous entrepreneurial talent in the Irish business community: talent and energy that can add value to businesses and contribute to our economic recovery and the creation of jobs through new business from exporting’.
The website with ‘how to’ guides, links to relevant information, self-assessment tools and templates, outlines the new supports. These include: · Workshops, seminars and training across the country

Information session with Connect Ireland founder Terry Clune
T
he founder of an initiative which rewards the creation of jobs in Ireland will give an information seminar at IT Sligo on Thursday, May 17th. Terry Clune, founder of ConnectIreland, will explain the potential benefits to individuals who connect with organisations to set up in Ireland. Appointed by the Irish Government and IDA Ireland to assist in the Government’s 2012 Action Plan for Jobs, Connect Ireland’s mission is to attract companies that are expanding internationally so they locate in Ireland and create new jobs in the Irish economy. Through the ConnectIreland programme, a ‘Connector’ will receive a minimum reward of €1,500 for each job created through their introduction. The reward is payable in two stages: 50% (€750) is paid one year after the job is created and the remaining 50% (€750) is paid two years after the job is created. The seminar will be hosted by IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre near the Institute’s Main Reception (A0006) from 4.00pm to 5.15pm on Thursday 17th of May. O
besity is a growing epidemic across the world and without a doubt Ireland is no exception. According to a recent study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Irish people are now the second fattest in Europe, with the levels of obesity soaring by a worrying 40pc over the past decade. It is undeniable that immediate action needs to be taken to raise awareness of this, and to ensure that, as a nation we can overcome these terrible statistics. But how can this controversial problem be resolved? Is it the government’s job to ensure that we all lead healthy lifestyles? Or, do we need to stand up and take responsibility for our own eating and exercise habits? It is a matter, which over the years has sparked numerous heated discussions. The Government have tried to tackle obesity from many different aspects over the last few years. Many initiatives have targeted children in school, with the aim of introducing healthy eating habits from an early age. Their efforts have been predominantly fruitless, with no noticeable decrease in childhood obesity. For example, take the Food Dudes initiative which hoped to “encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home”. It provided participating children with one portion of fruit, and one portion of vegetables per day and if the child ate these they were rewarded with a small prize- a pencil or something similar. In theory, it sounds like
Obesity in Ireland: not our problem? the perfect solution. However, I assure you that in practice it was a different matter. Each day, a different combination of fruit and vegetables were available, but those on offer were not (in my opinion) very appetising to young children- for instance one day a bag of chopped raw turnip was offered accompanied by a banana. Although many children ate them that day in order to receive the prize, it is unlikely that this would develop into an eating habit, and in some cases had the opposite effect, with children seeing them as something which was forced upon them. Certainly, having witnessed my own little brother participate it did not have a lasting impact on his eating habits, though their own evaluation suggests otherwise. More recently, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland proposed to ban advertisements regarding foods which have a high fat or salt content aimed at children. Under this draft, cheese would have been banned due to its fat content. This proposal was met with outrage by many who claimed that the high levels of calcium found in cheese was important for children and adolescents. Personally, I would agree that banning cheese advertisements seems a little extreme, but many other unhealthy foods are to be excluded as well, such as pizzas and cola. Surely we need to focus on the positive effects that this could bring? At least they are making an effort. It seems that many people prefer to sit back and complain about the state of the
nation’s health blaming it on everyone but themselves. We must not be fooled- this problem will not disappear if a few more classes of physical education are put in place or a ban is put on fatty foods. It will take a lot more than that. In order to solve this matter we must all take steps to tackle our own lifestyle choices to ensure that we live longer and healthier lives. Undeniably, it is difficult to lose weight or to maintain a healthy one. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. However the positive aspects far
outweigh the negative ones. In fact, obesity is thought to decrease life expectancy by up to nine years. We can no longer afford a laid back attitude to this problem. Obesity is something which needs to be tackled on a personal level, far more so than by governmental programmes. No matter how many advertisements are banned, or information pamphlets given out in most cases it comes down to a simple solution - Eat less, and exercise more.

T
op folk/bluegrass outfit Southern Tenant Folk Union makes a very welcome return visit to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday 16th May at 8.00pm. Formed in 2006, the Edinburgh-based
Southern Tenant Folk Union is now the most highly rated folk and bluegrass outfit in the UK today, acclaimed by fans and critics alike. Now with a fourth album the band has continued to appropriate themes and ancient sounding chord pro-
gressions from traditional folk songs. Using these to document and reflect modern life they keep the essential simplicity and directness of style but often with a modern update to the underlying lyrical subject matter. These guys are the real deal. See what the critics have to say: “Fierce, raw and earthy music that is the stuff of Mumford & Sons dreams. Compelling.” - Maddy Costa, The Guardian “Surging vocal harmonies riding a railroad of strings.” - Jim Gilchrist,The Scotsman, “Those harmonies are glorious, and the playing is out of the top drawer too.” Keith Bruce, The Sunday Herald "A compelling mix of bluegrass, gospel, old time and celtic swing that is memorably embellished with warm and richly woven harmonies." - The Irish Times "The musicianship is faultless." - Country Music People Southern Tenant Folk Union performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Wednesday 16th May at 8.00pm. “BAGLADY” - TOP IRISH THEATRE Top actor Maria McDermottroe stars in the hugely acclaimed “Baglady” at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday 9th May at 8.00pm. Written by award-winning playwright Frank McGuinness, “Baglady” is a touching and revealing drama on how a woman becomes alienated from life: the eponymous baglady is a gentle woman whose life has been destroyed by shocking violence. This onewoman play explores the conditions and circumstances which caused her to become estranged from society and gradually reveals the terrifying events which shaped her life. Directed by Caroline Fitzgerald, and starring Abbey and Peacock veteran actor Maria McDermottroe, whose credits also include the film “Angela’s Ashes”, “Glenroe”, and “Kilinaskully” (as Mrs Gilhooley). “Baglady” is a rarely performed play from one of Ireland’s leading playwrights, Frank McGuinness. It has not
been seen on an Irish stage for 25 years but its story is as relevant now as when it was first written, holding a mirror up to the ongoing debate about how Ireland can best come to terms with its own history. A production by Truewest Theatre/Eska Riada. Look no further for an unforgettable evening of Irish theatre. "McDermottroe is ultimately triumphant as she excavates the pure child from the raddled old woman ..." Declan Burke, The Sunday Times "Astonishing solo performance ..." Irish Times "McDermottroe is quietly searing" Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent Maria McDermottroe performs “Baglady” at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Wednesday 9th May at 8.00pm Booking advised. It is believed that the fear for the number 13 stems from primitive man being unable to count past 12. Numbers beyond 12 do now have an individual and independent name but are a combination of the first 12 numbers. With 12 being the end of the line, 13 was moving into unknown territory.
Eileen McSharry of Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal
The baker’s dozen The “unlucky 13″ is the reason why the thirteen loaves that bakers once supplied were never called by the number, but described as “a baker’s dozen.” The thirteenth loaf was regarded as a special bribe for the devil not to spoil the sale or the bread.

Improve Your Hearing acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passer-by so you might want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you. Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made.

EARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional. Here are five assorted tips and drills you can do to make sure you maintain your hearing ability. Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill,

These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg a day), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day). Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then later throw in a third... you get the picture. This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear. Keeping Your Ears Clean Bacteria, (known as “wax”) builds up in ears very fast. Although this is the case, a small amount of bacteria is actually good for your ears. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from other bacteria, fungi, insects and water. But excess wax can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory

We all know how frustrating it can be when a blackhead or whitehead begins to show up. But there are simple ways that we can reduce them or get rid of them. Exfoliate The simplest way to keep the pores clear is to exfoliate regularly, followed by a product which will help peel away blackheads. Look for medicated products containing resorcinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. There are ranges of CLEARASIL® products that help prevent black heads or exfoliate the skin. Clean Hair Keep your hair away from your face. When greasy hair touches or rubs off your skin it causes bacteria to build up and can spread infection. UV Rays Sunshine or ultra-violet light encourages skin peeling, and so helps to clear blocked pores.
So sunbathing or use of sun-beds in moderation can be helpful. To Squeeze or not to Squeeze? If blackheads look ready to pop out, you could try removing them gently by using a blackhead extractor. This is a neat little instrument with a hole at one end, available from chemists. Pressure around the blackhead helps it to pop out through the hole. Use tissue not your fingers to prevent bacteria spreading from your hands. Steam your face first to soften both the skin and the material blocking the pores. Then wrap your fingers in tissues and gently roll against either side of the blackhead. If it won't budge easily, leave well alone, as too much pressure will bruise and break the skin, making your face red and blotchy for days to come, and possibly leaving tiny broken veins. Finish by applying a medicated cream to the empty pore.

Bad spots need a doctor's advice, and he/she may suggest antibiotic or even hormone therapy. Whiteheads are plugs of sebum under the skin which are cysts in sebaceous or sweat glands. You can treat them yourself by pricking with a sterile needle (dip in boiling water) and squeezing out. Then apply antiseptic cream. If in doubt, seek professional treatment.
Rehydrate Your Skin Drink plenty of water to keep the healthy oils in your skin working. Also, if you’re sweating this causes water to excrete from the body leaving the skin dry and agitates it. Also avoid too much sugar in your diet as it increases your risk of getting acne.

Google 'knew of Street View data breaches', FCC report finds
tech news & science
Amazon tipped to release Kindle smartphone T
GOOGLE was aware of the interception of data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks by a Street View engineer years before it became public knowledge, a report by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has found. A heavily-redacted version of the FCC report was released earlier this month, finding Google not guilty of any illegal activity but fining it $25,000 (£15,000) for not cooperating with the investigation. An uncensored version was obtained by the LA Times from Google, however, suggesting that the search engine giant's previous defence that one 'rogue engineer' was to blame was not accurate. Passwords and emails were reportedly obtained by a piece of software written by the engineer as part of Google Maps' Street View cars, which take 360-degree photographs of public roads. A host of national regulators have already condemned Google over the issue, which came to light in 2010, with Australian authorities dubbing it the 'single biggest breach of privacy in history' and the UK information commissioner compelling Google to promise to improve its privacy practices. According to the FCC report the Google Street view engineer, identified only as 'Engineer Doe', informed at least two senior managers about his Wi-Fi intercepting software. 'Engineer Doe intended to collect, store and review payload data for possible use in other Google projects,' the report states. 'Engineer Doe specifically told two engineers working on the project, including a senior manager, about collecting payload data.' Google initially incorrectly denied it had intercepted any 'payload' data, later claiming senior managers had no knowledge of the software. 'While we disagree with some of the statements made in the document, we agree with the FCC's conclusion that we did not break the law,' a Google spokesman told the LA Times.
he reports come just days after Amazon announced that its hugely successful Kindle Fire had surpassed its Android tablet market rivals - claiming a 54.4 per cent majority stake of the American market, just six months after its release. Rumours first surfaced suggesting Amazon were working on a smartphone last November and would appear to be the natural next stage of the e-book evolution. 'Based on our supply chain check, we believe FIH [Foxconn] is now jointly developing the phone with Amazon,' Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a note to investors. And ABI research analyst Aapo Markkanen appears to agree that Amazon could be preparing to take on the already saturated smartphone market. 'A smartphone would be a logical next step for Amazon,' he told tech magazine Wired. It follows last month's reports that Facebook is set to release its own smartphone, based entirely around its social network platform. And Markkanen has tipped Amazon to follow Apple's lead by creating a smartphone built entirely around the Kindle itself. 'The lock-in effect of a great content ecosystem shouldn’t be under-estimated,' he said. 'If Amazon builds up a sizable customer base for its devices, and many of those cus-
tomers find its content offerings appealing enough, then that would mean a tougher market environment for Apple, as well.' 'Given that Amazon’s strategy is to treat devices as a content hub rather than a stand-
alone product, it’s pretty likely that price points for the smartphone would be very aggressive.' The Amazon smartphone is expected to retail at around £100 and has been tipped for a winter 2012 release.

Pirate Bay owners plan to fight High Court SKY, Everything Everywhere, TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media were ordered to prevent users from accessing the Swedish website on Monday, which hosts links to mostly-pirated music, videos and games. However the creators of the world's largest file-sharing website have revealed they do not agree with the decision. A Pirate Bay blog post argued that the move was an attempt to 'squeeze' it out of the market and told its users to campaign against the move. It read: 'Write to your ISP and tell them to appeal the case. Write to your local MPs and tell them that this is not allowed. 'Make sure your voice is heard. Remember, we're all the pirate bay, and we must stand united against the censorship from our opponents.' The issue over internet censorship remains a legal minefield and BT has asked for a few more weeks to consider its position. However executive director of the Open Rights Group, Jim Killock, has slammed the decision. 'Blocking The Pirate Bay is pointless and dangerous. It will fuel calls for further, wider and even more drastic calls for internet cen-
sorship of many kinds, from pornography to extremism,' he said. 'Internet censorship is growing in scope and becoming easier. Yet it never has the effect desired. It simply turns criminals into heroes.' The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) had asked for ISPs to block the Pirate Bay but the firms said they could only do so if a court order was issued. Speaking after today's order, the BPI said: 'Sites like the Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists.' Its chief executive Geoff Taylor added: 'The High Court has confirmed that the Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale.' He continued: 'Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them. 'This is wrong - musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else.' Launched in 2003, the Pirate Bay is one of the most well-known file-sharing sites on the web. Its four founders have been found guilty
of helping people circumvent copyright controls but despite the ruling being upheld in 2010 the site continues to function. The Pirate Party UK, a spinoff from the political movement started in Sweden that backs copyright reform, said the court order would 'not put any extra pennies into the pockets of artists'. 'Unfortunately, the move to order blocking on the Pirate Bay comes as no surprise,' party leader Loz Kaye told the BBC. 'The truth is that we are on a slippery slope towards internet censorship in the United Kingdom.'

Who ya gonna call? Fan restores Cadillac as real-life Ghostbusters car
Motorway construction thwarted by stubborn elderly couple's house
Wacky supernatural enthusiast Paul Harborne has restored a battered old Cadillac into an exact replica of the iconic Ghostbusters ECTO-1 vehicle made famous in the 1984 box office smash.
Paul Harborne ain't afraid of no ghosts after creating a replica of the Ghostbusters ECTO-1 car
M
r Harborne has spent over ÂŁ50,000 on the project and juggled working parttime as a security guard to turn his dream into a reality. After an extensive worldwide search, the 49-year-old from Sedgeley, West Midlands, managed to locate one of only six 1959 Cadillac models just a few miles from his home in Leicester. The restoration enthusiast has spent
years attempting to create an 'authentic Ghostbusters experience' for fans after hand-making the majority of the car's interior features from hand. And the sci-fi fan, who has also previously restored an A-Team van, admitted it has been a long struggle giving the worsefor-wear orange car a new lease of life. 'It was a complete wreck as it had been abandoned,' he said. 'It's extremely rare
and very hard to restore. 'It's certainly been a challenge - 50-yearold Cadillacs are hard work!' The original vehicle, driven by eccentric Bill Murray and his fellow ghost hunters, is considered by fans to be a cross-over between an ambulance and funeral hearse. And Mr Harborne explained the extensive amount of work which has gone into creating the astonishing replica. 'There are 158 miles of wire in the roof to power the four lightbars and rotating beacons on top,' he said. 'I've also managed to get scrolling LEDs for the sides which spell out "Ghostbusters We're back". 'There are four speakers in the hearse as well as two DVD players so you can not only watch the film, but also hear it when you're inside and out. 'I've set up an iPod so that there are also genuine sirens and sounds coming from the car.' the film can go on their own ghostbusting adventures. And he also hopes that if a third Ghostbusters film is ever made, his creation might have a starring role. Regarding speculation over a third film, creator Dan Aykroyd recently said: 'The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. 'We have more work to do.'
The problematic 'nail house' DON'T worry, we'll work around you. One stubborn elderly couple created the ultimate road block after refusing to move out of their home to allow a new major motorway route to be built. Similar homes have been labelled Nail Houses in China, following a series of disputes across the country. The reference comes from a stubborn nail that is difficult to remove. Developers have been accused of using dirty tactics to evict tenants, cutting one homeowner's power and, in one famous case, excavating a 10-metre deep pit around an entire house. However the Chunqin family, who argue they should be given the choice of where they are relocated to, have installed CCTV cameras to stop a similar scenario from happening. One of China's most famous 'nail houses' has been given its own enclosed courtyard in the middle of a newly-built shopping centre.
Man sues BMW after motorcycle ride gave him '20-month erection' A man has filed a lawsuit against BMW after claiming that a ride on one of its bikes gave him an erection lasting 20 months and counting. CALIFORNIA man Henry Wolf has said that a four-hour trip on his BMW bike with a 'ridge-like seat' gave him a persistent, lasting erection, and he is now suing the motoring manufacturer and seatmaker Corbin-Pacific. There have been concerns in the past that narrow 'banana' bike seats could cause loss of feeling in the genitals of both men and women, but this ride seems to have caused the exact opposite effect. In the Wolf v BMW lawsuit, it is claimed that the motorcyclist went for a ride in September

2010, and since then has suffered from a long-lasting erection that simply will not subside. It is a well-established fact that if an erection lasts longer than four hours, medical treatment should be sought. The lawsuit for emotional distress reads that Wolf is 'now is unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental anguish.' He is suing BMW and CorbinPacific for lost wages, medical expenses, emotional

Ballina River Moy is internationally acknowledged as an exceptional salmon fishery, producing several thousand salmon to the rod annually. The famous Ridge Pool, the salmon anglers’ paradise, is located in the heart of the town. The salmon is also at the centre of one of the west’s longest established Summer events, Ballina’s salmon festival. In July this year, as in years past, the town will come alive in a frenzy of activity. Over the past five years it has developed into one of Ireland's major festivals, providing a week long feast of free entertainment for the entire family - music, song, theatre, art, heritage, culture and novelty events. Foreign visitors view and experience what is best about Mayo during this spectacular week. The town’s newest bridge, Salmon Weir Bridge, is a pedestrian bridge over the River Moy from Barrett St. to Ridge Pool Rd. The bridge, which was designed to resemble a fishing rod, was opened in July 2009.

oday's business world is an increasingly competitive place to be and your company identity is an essential component of your company image. Well designed signage is a key element of any successfully marketing a business, or launching an awareness campaign. A well designed plan for your business signage will instantly and effectively communicate the style, professionalism and overall presence of your business. Busingss signage will convey to people who you are, where you are and what you do.
Creating a First Impression Your signage is often the publics’ first perception of you and your first opportunity to make a positive impression on potential customers. Customers these days are highly attuned to marketing messages, and can quickly pick up on visual cues which either please or displease them. Even small business' has had to raise the standard of their presentation to remain competative. drop quote Whilst signage is a necessity for any business, don't underestimate its use and versatility as an advertising tool. As an advertising tool signage can also increase awareness of your business, promote various specials or products, communicate information such as prices or opening hours, and enhance the impact and support other media campaigns you may undertake. What can effective signage achieve? • Cost effective marketing tool • Promotes products and services • Communicates essential information • First impressions count • Brands your business • Landmarks your business • Commands attention • Makes life easy for your customers • Successful businesses project a professional image consistently from their signs through
to tv or print advertising. What type of signage do you want? Most business' signage plan falls into one of four types. Which category do you think your business falls into? How can you improve? Type A - Great Signage Customers can find the business, feel welcome, instantly recognise the brand and know where to go to get assistance or information. The business signage is designed to be legible from the appropriate reading distance, and has clarity in the graphic design consistent to the business image. These business' have made the most of the showroom or reception to promote products and services, to offer special deals or advertise new items, as well as display their qualifications, experience and suppliers to educate their customers about their business. Type B - Old Signage Faded, falling apart, and out of date. The business logo changed two years ago but the company didn't bother to update their business signage. The business looks unwelcoming, uninterested and customers will stay away. The signs haven't been updated in so long, that they are just a part of the landscape, the business is ignored and forgotten. Type C - Poorly Designed You've spent a fortune on new signs... but the design makes them unreadable, customers say they can't find your business... or just didn't notice you at all. Clients and friends ask "Are you open? Where do we find you?" Type D - Not enough signage The customer has finally found the business after drving around and asking for directions and by the time they find you they are cranky.
Once in the door they don't know where to go to find out if the business can supply what they need, and can't tell where to go to get assistance. Or they may have turned up 2 minutes before opening time, but they leave because the opening hours aren't advertised prominently. Perhaps you need to use a sign to identify your customer service desk, information desk, help desk or reception. Your sign is just one way of advertising your business. Most small businesses, though, can’t afford large ad campaigns. If done right, your sign is an economical way to get out your message. When designed effectively, a sign can combine with other media to help brand your
business in the mind of a consumer. Text and images on the sign should be repeated throughout your marketing mix, either within your company (stationery, catalogs, business cards, uniforms, vehicles, etc.) or when advertising elsewhere (TV, radio, newspapers. The more consistent your message, the more reminders you give customers to remember who you are, and what you're selling. The goal of any business is "top-of-the-mind" awareness. If a consumer in your community was asked which company first comes to mind in your industry, would that person think of yours? Mostsign companies can work with you to design (or change) the graphic image or logo that represents your business.
