ardai are now treating the death of little Mari Connolly who perished in an arson attack on her family home in Boyle, in Roscommon, as murder. Mari died from smoke inhalation. Five year old Mari died in a fire after her father’s house was targeted over what is believed to have been a personal grudge after an altercation in a nightclub . The awful tragedy occurred between 2am and 3am on Monday morning. Mari's mother, Mr Connolly's former partner Teresa Kane, had given birth to twin girls over the weekend and their dad, Richard, was minding the girls while she was in hospital. Richard Connolly, who has severe spinal injuries and a collapsed lung, is expected to remain in hospital for quite a while after he saved the lives of his other daughters Lauren and Naomi by jumping from the 1st floor window with them. At this stage Gardai believe that an accelerant such as petrol was poured through the letterbox and this is the most likely reason the terraced house was engulfed in flames within minutes. Neighbours from Termon road described how the home went up "like an inferno". Gardai are now treating the death as a murder inquiry. According to sources, they believe that a well know gangster is responsible for the arson attack which resulted in little Mari’s death. A manhunt is now underway for the suspected arsonist -who is also the

New instant chat service for speech problems A new service, which aims to help people with speech and language difficulties to access advice and information on health and welfare services, has been launched. The Live Advisor Service has been developed by the staff of the Citizens Information Phone Service (CIPS). It is an instant chat service that is available from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9am and 5pm. It is aimed specifically at people who would usually have difficulty using the telephone. "The Live Advisor provides the benefit of personal interaction with skilled and knowledgeable individuals, enabling cus-

tomers with hearing and speech difficulties to access customer-focused information on all aspects of public and social services in order to help themselves," explained the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton. She noted that people's access to entitlements and their knowledge of their rights often depend on the quality of information they receive. For people with speech and hearing difficulties, access to this type of information can be extremely limited. "The objective of the information provider is to bridge the gap between the citizen in need and the variety of services

that are available to meet those needs. Information services which can direct individuals, particularly those who are marginalised, to their rights and entitlements are essential," Ms Burton commented. According to the Department of Social Protection, the CIPS has experienced a ‘dramatic increase' in demand for their services as a result of the recession. Between January and August of this year alone, it had responded to around 115,000 requests for advice and information on social and public services, such as welfare entitlements. The CIPS national helpline can be contacted at 1890 777 121.

CAN YOU AFFORD TO TAKE A JOB?

Helicopter pilot in miracle escape from crash

I came across this on one of the discussion boards on the net and I suppose it sums up where we are at as a country at the moment.

Hey all, I have a Masters and 17 years experience and the most I can get offered at the moment for a management position is 50k. I know loads of people here are probably thinking that I should jump at it and would love to be in the same position but bear with me. The problem is that I was on nearly twice that previously and if I take such a serious step back-wards it could take years to get back to where I was. I feel I should wait until I get a decent offer even if it takes a few more months (or maybe I will have to emigrate). I have never been out of work before but I was made redundant last Christmas. I was surprised after the initial panic was over to see that I am not that worse off now even though I was on a very good salary. I am not saying that I am better off now. Far from it but I am saying that I am as well off as if I was to take a 50k job. Let me explain (the injustice of it for working people): I have two children and I get the following: €375 per week Job seekers (for whole family) €215 per week rent allowance €70 per week children's allowance €660 per week in total. €660 x 52 = €34320 per year (take home) + medical card. (annual benefit of about €2000 per year to my family) + Back to school allowance (€200) Total = €36520 (total income from state) I have been offered 50K so far. To explain a bit further one of my daughters require regular medical care that used to cost about €100 per month. Other medical costs averaged out about €50 per month. Net income on 50k is €39,483 + Childrens Allowance €2,880 Total €42,363 Out of that I would need to pay: €2000 medical costs (per year) €200 back to school (per year) €200 per month costs for getting to work (€2,400) Total €4,600 per year. Take €4,600 from €42,363 = €37,763 Results: €36,520 from state €37,763 from €50k income PAYE Difference with job = €1243 per year or €23 per week better off with the job as offered. The figures above are rough but fairly accurate. I worked for 17 years and spent 8 years in total studying at night while paying for my own education and never took a cent from the state until I was made redundant. I have paid a shed load of tax over the years and over the past few years in particular. I was panicing when I was let go and wondered how we would all cope. Truth was I was able to use redundancy to clear all loans and credit cards and dramatically reduce my outgoings. I also negotiated a rent reduction with landlord. I did not buy a house as they where over priced and I was happy to rent. I can't wait to get back to work but if I can't get at least 75k I will have to emigrate as I am not going to be one of the working poor in Ireland when so much needs to be corrected and sorted out by government. I wonder how I would get on looking to buy a house on 50k a year even now in Ireland with a wife and two kids. It is a pure load of bollox for the average working person in Ireland. I don't think a lot of people realize that the reason they can barely afford to survive, even on a good wage is because the lowest income in society is as I have detailed above (if you’re not working). If I could achieve a better standard of living for the 50k then I would take it in a heartbeat. Its not the employers fault. Ireland is just still too expensive to live in that we all need this amount of money to keep our heads above water. If you look at buying power per income vs other countries that receive far less we are still poor. It is just not fair on the working family in Ireland. I have not been looking that long so far but is this the experience of other job seekers? Is it any wonder that certain companies are complaining that they cannot fill the vacancies they have to offer, as potential employees are getting more that enough from the Social Welfare system to survive. Obviously there are families struggling to make ends meet. but the above is a reminder as to how it benefits some people to stay on the system.

A BUSINESSMAN is recovering this week after being forced to make a terrifying helicopter crash-landing in a field not long after take-off. A small, two-seater Robinson 44 aircraft piloted by businessman Michael Mannion crashlanded five miles outside of Athlone at around 8pm on Sunday evening. It is understood Mr Mannion, who is in his thirties and who runs a successful quarry business in Bealnamulla, Co Roscommon, had just taken off from the Ballinasloe Horse Fair when the aircraft got into difficulty. The businessman, who runs R&M Quarries, was alone in the aircraft at the time of the accident. The aircraft crashed ten miles away from the fair at Taughmaconnell. Miraculously he walked out of the wreckage shaken but unharmed. An experienced pilot, Mr Mannion has his own landing strip at the back of his home in Co Roscommon.

Warning to swimmers as deadly parasite rampant in rivers

Lough Gill, Co. Sligo

SWIMMERS are unwittingly exposing themselves to a deadly parasite when they use our waterways, new research has found. There are now concerns that cryptosporidium is "widespread in the aquatic environment". Dr Frances Lucy, an ecologist and lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science at IT Sligo, has warned that anyone who feels ill following watersports on our lakes and rivers should contact a doctor. Concerns were raised after tests were carried out at Lough Gill, Co Sligo, and from the River Liffey, Dublin, as part of a joint re-

project search being undertaken by IT Sligo and UCD. Dr Lucy's warning relates to the dangers for people who accidentally swallow water while swimming or taking part in watersports. Cryptosporidium is especially dangerous for anyone whose immune system is suppressed with AIDS patients, the elderly and babies regarded as particularly vulnerable. Symptoms, which include diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, weight loss and dehydration, can last for two weeks. The study, which is being funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, hopes to establish why there is a spring peak in the number of human cryptosporidiosis cases in Ireland. Cryptosporidium was identified as a serious public health risk following a severe outbreak in Galway in 2007, when hundreds of people were affected and a boil water notice was in operation for six months.Tests found most people were infected with a cryp-

tosporidium strain found in human waste. The current research project on Lough Gill and the Liffey will not be completed until next year but the findings so far are "worrying". The tests were analysed at IT Sligo, UCD and at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the US. Cryptosporidium was found "in almost every sample". While Lough Gill is the main source of drinking water for Sligo city and parts of Leitrim, Dr Lucy stressed that the water treatment system used by Sligo County Council is state of the art, and said there was no risk to public health from drinking the water once it is treated. With the final report due to be published in the middle of 2012, Dr Lucy revealed the preliminary findings suggest contamination in both locations is due to both animal and human waste. She pointed out that slurry was found to be contaminated and that the slurry spreading season in Ireland continues until mid-October. Based on her previous research, Dr Lucy believes that had the samples been taken on any lake or river, the result could have been the same. "I believe it is widespread in the aquatic environment. If we had picked any lake in the northwest we would have found cryptosporidium," she said. Given many people living in the west of Ireland use local group water schemes which are supplied by lakes, Dr Lucy said adequate water filtration systems were vital.

new wiring. A price of €349 was quoted. However, the house in question already had a satellite dish and did not need new equipment to receive Saorview. A spokeswoman for Saorview said neither it, nor RTE, had commissioned or endorsed any door-to-door sales activities. The state broadcaster is switching off the analogue signal at the end of next year. Cable and satellite customers won't be affected, but there are still swathes of the country where viewers are reliant on the analogue signal -- especially in rural areas. Customers will need either a digital set-top box hooked up to their existing TV, or else a modern TV with a built-in digital receiver. They will face costs of between €60 and €200, the spokeswoman for RTE said.

Around 340,000 householders currently receiving their TV signal through aerials will have to install new technology to access the digital service from 2012. But those who have to make the switch can buy the necessary equipment for as little as €59. Now householders have been reporting sales people claiming to be from Saorview offering to carry out the work for €350. A salesman calling to homes in north Co Dublin claimed to be from Saorview and offered to upgrade one home's TV service to accept the new digital service from RTE by installing a satellite dish, new set-top box and

Neven Maguire to be head-chef for private dinner party in ‘Neven's Dinner 4 Bóthar’ initiative Search begins for 100 hosts to hold dinner parties across the North West to raise €50,000 in support of aid organisation’s work in developing countries

ONE of Ireland's most celebrated chefs Neven Maguire is set to be the head-chef for one lucky dinner party host in an initiative aimed at raising €50,000 for aid organisation Bóthar's work in developing countries. The Co. Cavan award winning chef and Bóthar patron today launched ‘Neven’s Dinner 4 Bóthar’, which is looking for 100 hosts to join him in holding dinner parties across the North West on Friday 28th October using his specially created ‘Dinner 4 Bóthar’ menu ideas and recipes. The novel fundraising programme by Bóthar, an Irish charity which takes over 5,000 families annually out of destitution by airlifting

livestock to communities in 35 countries in the developing world, is supported by Ocean FM, the Radisson Blu hotel in Sligo and Craft Butchers. Each of the 100 hosts is asked to invite a group of their friends to their dinner party who will in turn be asked to bring a gift of a donation instead of the traditional bottle of wine or bunch of flowers dinner party guests present to their hosts. And for one lucky hosts, Neven Maguire will cook dinner for them and up to ten of their friends at a special location. The winner will be picked out of a hat along with five other hosts who will each receive a visit from

Neven on dinner party night, Friday 28th October. “I became a patron of Bóthar this year, having adopted it as my charity of choice last year, a decision which was made all the more real when I visited a number of Bóthar projects in Uganda in the summer (spring?),” said Neven Maguire. “Having food on the table is something pretty much everyone in Ireland can count on but it is only when you see what it really is to be hungry, as I did in Uganda this year, that do you realise how important the work of Bóthar is. It literally enables thousands of people each year to earn a living, to eat, to access healthcare and to play a part in helping others in their community to do the same by gifting the offspring of the animals they received themselves. “With Dinner 4 Bóthar I can use my passion for food and cooking to good use for these people and I am appealing to householders across the North West to get on board with this initiative. The most satisfying feeling after our dinner parties will be the knowledge that the money we’ve raised together by dining will enable others to eat. I’m really excited about the prospect of helping to raise €50,000 and look forward to meeting all of the hosts at my cookery demonstration.” “I’m also really looking forward to preparing an extra-special meal for one host and their friends as well as dropping in to visit five others as they entertain their guests on dinner party night.”

Each host who signs up to ‘Dinner 4 Bóthar’ will be invited with a friend to a free cookery demonstration given by Neven Maguire on Tuesday 18th October next at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo. Neven will use the evening to show hosts how to create a range of recipes and to provide all the hints and tips you need to create the perfect meal for your friends. To sign up as a host simply contact Bóthar locally on 071 9120 100, email: dinner@bothar.ie or post to Bóthar, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo.

BAKING gear has been selling like hot cakes — thanks to a hit TV show. The second series of BBC2's The Great British Bake-off — hosted by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins — started in August. But since then, department stores have seen a 15 per cent surge in sales of items such as cake tins and muffin trays. Vintage-style tins and stands have proved even more popular with sales doubling this year. Equipment for jam-making is also on the up. Head of buying for cooking and dining at one store, said: "Our customers have embraced baking over the last month or two." The show — which pulls in more than four million viewers — had finalists Holly Bell, Jo Wheatley and Mary-Anne Boermans baking for a street party.

Scanlon sought to have drink driving measures watered down IT'S reported that former government TD from Sligo, Eamon Scanlon, was among a number who wrote letters on behalf of publicans asking that the new legislation be less stringent. According to reports a number of former ministers privately tried to derail strict new drink-driving measures while backing them in public. Confidential correspondence obtained by the Irish Independent reveals that former Fianna Fail ministers and deputies wrote letters, mainly on behalf of publicans, in an attempt to have the proposals watered down. The former Fianna Fail TD from Ballymote asked about the possibility of considering a suggestion by Sligo publicans of

extending the penalty points system for those just over the new limit to those caught as many as three times. The letters were written to the then Transport Minister Noel Dempsey between 2009 and 2010 on behalf of publicans who were opposed to the legislation, which will become law before the October bank holiday weekend. All of the Fianna Fail ministers and deputies who wrote to Mr Dempsey subsequently voted for the cut in the drink-driving limits when it came before the Dail in July last year. Under the new measures, motorists who have taken less than a pint of beer will be liable for penalty points and a fine.

Shocking Statistic - Mayo suicides double in 3 years PERHAPS it’s the impact of the recession, or tougher times, but the alarming fact that rates of suicide increased 110 per cent in Mayo in three years has given rise to shock in many quarters. The staggering figure was revealed by Michael Ryan, director of 5050 PhoneAFriend suicideprevention group, during a recent Castlebar Town Council meeting. In 2008, ten people in the county died by suicide. In 2010, that figure jumped to 21. Mr Ryan said that suicide was the ‘greatest social issue which society faces today’. 5050 PhoneAFriend informs people at risk of the support structures available to them, makes suicide-prevention promotion a priority issue in the public and political forum, and raises awareness around the issues that can lead to suicide. During his presentation Mr Ryan emphasised the prevalence of depression in Ireland, pointing out that 450,000 people are currently suffering from the illness. In 2009, 12,000 people attempted suicide – one every 40 minutes. Throughout, Mr Ryan emphasised the importance of seeking help. “This is an illness like any other,” he said.“There is a solution.Talk to someone.”The Mayor of Castlebar, Cllr Eugene McCormack,

who is employed by the HSE said, “I have seen in a professional capacity the serious issue of suicide, and 5050 PhoneAFriend is a great initiative, the first of its kind in the country. There are serious problems out there.” Cllr McCormack went on to talk about the potentially lifethreatening impact of day-today stresses, highlighting in particular the plight of one young person who has been the

victim of bullying. “One young boy and his family have been in contact with me recently. The young boy is at home from school because of bullying and he has been greatly affected by it. I am trying to assist them. Hopefully he will be OK.” More lives are lost each year to suicide in Ireland than in road fatalities, yet the budget to reduce deaths on Ireland’s roads is almost five times higher at €41 million. Just €8.7 million is

allocated for suicide prevention. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne, who works as an undertaker, said it was ‘startling’ that the funding allocated to preventing road deaths was so much higher. He said, “I come across these cases [of suicide] regularly in a professional capacity too, but unfortunately when I do it’s too late. If people could see the grief that families and loved ones go through, maybe they would seek other alternatives.”

Sugar-tax plan for soft drinks 'will cost jobs' A MOVE to introduce a 'sugar tax' on fizzy drinks would mean job losses among the 230,000 people directly or indirectly employed in the food and drink sector, it was claimed last night. Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) was responding to statements by Health Minister James Reilly that he was looking at imposing a tax on soft drinks to help fight obesity. He said his officials were looking to France, where soft drinks were targeted for extra taxes to reduce over-consumption. However, he was not able to say how large the tax would be. "The Department of Health is looking at the ramifications," he added. But the FDII said the tax would be discriminatory. "The industry has been highlighted by many as

a vehicle for Irish economic recovery; any move to impose a discriminatory tax on the sector would potentially stunt this future potential growth and ultimately result in job losses," said a spokeswoman.

Couple reunited in nursing home A 94-YEAR-OLD pensioner has been reunited with his wife of 66 years after a campaign by their family. Patrick Rushe, from Beltra in Sligo, has been heartbroken since his wife Molly (92) went into care at a nursing home two years ago. It was the first time they had ever been separated. The family has been campaigning to have Patrick admitted to the same Sligo nursing home ever since but the HSE had refused to provide long-term nursing care for him. However, following a review of his case in recent weeks it was decided that he did need such care. And yesterday, at the Nazareth Nursing Home in the town, the couple were reunited.

Daughter Alice Gilmartin told the Irish Independent: "Dad thought his wish to be allowed to live out his remaining years with mum would never happen. "But we finally got there. Dad has had two heart attacks in recent years and he fell recently so he needed this care. "I know he hadn't been sleeping well since mum went into care. Our family is delighted." Now Patrick, a retired farm helper, and Molly, a retired cook, will be able to see each other every day at Nazareth Nursing Home in the town. "They will be in separate rooms but just down the corridor from each other," said Mrs Gilmartin. "Sure if they fall out now, they can always go back to their separate rooms!"

For the average person, the new limit of 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood is equivalent to drinking less than a pint. The limit will drop from the current level of 80mg. As part of the changes due to be introduced in a matter of weeks, offenders will not automatically lose their licence if they are just over the new lower limit. Instead, an on-the-spot fine of €200 will be issued by gardai along with three penalty points. They will also escape a drink-driving conviction. The penalty regime will see motorists over 80mg get a fixed charge notice of €400. They will also be disqualified from driving for six months. At the moment, they are banned from roads for 12 months. Motorists caught with over 100mg of alcohol will have to appear in court, with a minimum road ban of one year hanging over their heads. They also face fines of up to €5,000.

operation between individuals is an irreplaceable asset? On receiving my results in August of this year, I was quite simply, jubilant. Not only had I acquired adequate CAO points for my first choice but I had generously surpassed my own dreams. For me, this proved a vital point- hard work will always prevail! Although the prospect of spending Lunchtimes studying the intricate details of the Gaelic League’s revival was initially somewhat daunting, just weeks in and my hard work was beginning to reap rewards as my C2 average rose to a consistent B1. The recent criticism accusing the system of promoting rote learning is one I strongly disagree with. Although the curriculum in certain subjects is somewhat restricted, in my personal experience the vast majority of teachers use the limited base only as a foundation on which to build up students own awareness and information. This effectively mirrors the belief of renowned Irish poet W. B Yeats that- “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” Teachers’ willingness to encourage open discussions and honest opinions provide a valuable opportunity for all students to strive to fulfil their potential in a secure environment of mutual respect and trust, while individuality is also expressed, all the time learning to respect and conform to society’s vital rules. Not so horrific, surely? Similarly, the promotion of extra curriculum activities at secondary level is integral in the world wide attempts to combat the ever growing problem of obesity among the under 18’s. Numerous sporting, debating and academic clubs all encourage social development, an essential trait in today’s demanding, hectic twenty first century lifestyle. The tear- stained faces and trembling lips which filled our school’s canteen as we celebrated our Graduation Mass just days before the beginning of the Leaving Cert this year, speak a thousand words. The fond farewells as we all spread our wings in different directions in the last few weeks are equally poignant. For despite the undeniable pressure and stress which personifies the Leaving Cert examination, it is above all an educational experience during which Nelson Mandela’s belief that “Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world”, rings particularly true. Whether my opinion is somewhat rose- tinted is arguable, however the Irish seanfhocal “Ni bhionn saoi gan locht” is equally relevant. Despite my initial disbelief as I trudged to the school bus on a gloomy Monday morning as a fretful First Year Student, I now agree whole heartedly with my Grandad’s cheery declaration that “Your schooldays are the best days of your life!”

Ballina’s “Twister” could have heralded period of bad weather The eagle-eyed John McCann from Ballina captured this “twister” from his upstairs window which overlooks the river Moy. John sighted the unusual phenomenon in July on the west bank of the Moy, with the formation probably located in the Attymass region. The “twister” either moved through a mountainous region or was completely harmless as no damage was reported in the area during this time. Our thanks to John for providing us with the picture.

Privacy groups wants Facebook probe

NINE privacy groups have sent a joint letter to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) saying it should investigate the way Facebook collects data about users' online activity after recent changes to its site. The Electronic Privacy Information Centre, the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups sent the letter to the FTC. The groups said changes Facebook made last week give it far greater ability to disclose users' personal information to businesses than it used to have. Facebook users can now consent just once and have applications continuously share the music they are listening to or the articles they are reading. Facebook said the changes give users control over what apps they use and what information is shared. The letter does not constitute a formal complaint.

Amazon unveils €150 iPad rival AMAZON is launching a tablet computer aimed at challenging Apple's iPad by extending its Kindle brand into the world of fullcolour, multipurpose devices. The Kindle Fire will sell for $199 (€150) in the US when it goes on sale in November. It is about half the size of the iPad, making it a close match with the US Barnes & Noble's Nook Color tablet, which came out last year. But while Barnes & Noble sees the Nook Color as jazzed-up e-reader, Amazon has broader goals for the Fire, as a platform for games, movies, music and other applications. Chief executive Jeff Bezos also showed off three new black-and-white Kindle models, including its cheapest yet, at 79 dollars (£50). A touch screen model will cost 99 dollars (£63), and one with mobile network access will cost 149 dollars (£95). Even before its release, the Kindle Fire was heralded as a worthy competitor to Apple's iPad. Amazon is nearly unique in its ability to sell content such as e-books, movies and music suited for a tablet - just like Apple does. But competing with Apple will not be easy. Many have tried to copy the iPad's success, but so far, it is the overwhelming front-runner in the tablet computer category. Apple sold 28.7 million of them from April 2010 to June 2011. Analysts at research firm Gartner expect the iPad to account for three out of four tablet sales this year. The Fire runs a version of Google Android software, used by other iPad rivals and will have access to applications through Amazon's Android store. Unlike the iPad, the Fire does not need to be backed up on a PC. Instead, it backs up its contents wirelessly on Amazon's servers."That model that you have to back up your own content is a broken model. We want to take responsibility for that," Mr Bezos said in a dig at Apple.

Children get altered images lesson CHILDREN as young as 10 will be shown pictures of a scantily-clad Britney Spears and male models in their underwear to teach them how images are altered in the media. Before and after pictures of the Toxic singer in heels and a skimpy swimsuit will feature in a new body image lesson for 10 and 11-year-olds, with a bare-chested image of actor Matthew McConaughey. Digitally-enhanced images of Calvin Klein models, air-brushed make-up adverts and highprofile campaigns involving Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren will all be shown to children during the hour-long lessons. The launch of the body confidence teaching pack as part of the Media Smart literacy programme comes in the week pop star Rihanna got her marching orders after a farmer objected to her peeling off her clothes while filming a new video on his land. The lessons will also consider whether adverts such as those in the Tommy Hilfiger "Country Club" campaign, featuring barechested and bikini-clad models with champagne on a tennis court, represent a realistic view of society. And they will also ask why images such as Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, which show a

more diverse range of models, are considered "unique". The "importance of personal attributes and human values over physical beauty" will also be considered, with children being asked what they think is beautiful and what counts as a good person. Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said: "Young people are being set an impossible standard by the images they are confronted with on a daily basis from the media and advertising and there is evidence to suggest

this has a negative impact on self esteem. "I want children to recognise from an early age that their value is worth so much more than just their physical appearance." Paul Jackson, chairman of Media Smart which developed the lessons, said trials found that "children responded really well when they realised that most of the images they see have been altered in some way and are aspirational but not realistic".

Google to open Dublin data centre

INTERNET giant Google is to open a new data centre in Dublin to run its search engine, Gmail and Google Maps services. The multinational has bought 11 acres of land and an existing building in the Profile Park in the west of the city in a 75 million euro invest-

ment. Google said construction work will start soon on a specialised, energy-efficient data centre full of computers that will run the three main online services Richard Bruton, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise

and Innovation, said the expansion was a sign of what can be achieved. "As I have said repeatedly, the global cloud computing industry offers Ireland a massive opportunity for jobs and economic growth," he said. "I am determined that Government will act decisively to seize that opportunity, and that is why I have established a cross-government implementation group to ensure that prompt action occurs. "The decision by Google, one of the most important multinational companies in Ireland, to locate a state of the art data centre in Dublin is an endorsement of our policies in this area, and a sign of what is possible if we continue our focus." The project will create more than 200 jobs during the construction, and up to 30 full-time and contractor jobs once operational. Positions at the centre will include computer technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers, and catering and security staff. John Herlihy, head of Google Ireland, said the company was very happy to continue investing in Ireland and to build a further presence. The new data centre will be one of the most energyefficient in Google's global fleet."

Angler's biggest ever catch

AN angler caught the biggest catch of his life - when he accidentally hooked his 15 stone friend in the mouth. Bogdan Symanski 50 - from Zielona Gora, Poland - had been ribbing his friend about catching nothing during the sea fishing trip when he felt a searing pain in his mouth. "He'd put out one last cast and there was this sudden tug on my mouth and then blinding pain. There was blood everywhere. It was terrifying," said Bogdan. "Maybe if I'd kept my big mouth shut he would have missed me," he added. Rescue boat skipper Piotr Kroczynski said: "He was lucky it wasn't a few inches higher or it would've taken his eye out."

Runaway cow lands advertising job AN Austrian farmer has found an unusual sideline after his runaway cow was signed up as the new face of a sportswear company. Laura the cow made headlines after she escaped from her field and went walkabout through a branch of Intersport at a shopping centre in Serfaus. She was videoed walking through the store before she was lassoed by security staff. The hungry heifer had wandered into the warm building looking for food after an early blizzard covered her grazing pastures with snow. After chewing her way through two sports bras and a Tshirt, security guards managed to hitch her to a dumbbell with a skipping rope. But not before she'd left a cow pat in front of the mirror. Now Intersport spokesman Hans Seifert said Laura was the star of a new TV ad for the firm's winter rental service. He said: "Laura had the right idea, for anyone preparing for winter Intersport is the right place to be. We have all your winter needs - skis, helmets and warm winter clothing." Farmer Hannes Schroder - who agreed to buy the damaged goods and pay for a clean up - has now earned the money back in spades. He added: "I had to buy everything she chewed - even the bras."

Cream of the tops

SCIENTIST Anke Domaske is set to shake up the fashion industry - with a range of clothes made out of milk. Anke, 28 - a mircobiologist from Hannover, Germany - discovered a way of combining powdered organic milk with other ingredients to weave a special fabric for her QMilch line. "Bio clothing is a big trend about to take off in the fashion industry and we're ahead of the curve," she explained. "The milk fabric even has proteins in the powder to keep your skin in great condition," she added.

Showering 'women' shock shoppers

Gold vending machine opens in Beijing MEGAďšşWEALTHY Chinese investors are being given the chance to buy solid gold from the country's first gold vending machine. The machine - guarded round the clock by security cards - can dispense everything from a two kilogram ingot to a medal or trinket weighing a few ounces. Payment scanners recognise every Chinese banknote and, of course, credit gold cards are welcome, say the bankers behind the machine. "Gold is very popular now and this is a very convenient way to buy it, just like using a bank machine," said a spokesman for the Gongmei Gold Trading Co, in Beijing's Wangfujing shopping centre.

A shopping mall stunned passers-by in China with a window display which appeared to feature three young women taking a shower. The unusual window display attracted crowds outside the store, in downtown Lanzhou, western China's Gansu Province, reports local media. Most people needed to look twice before

they realised that the 'women' were actually mannequins. And the clothes which had seemingly been draped over the shower doors were actually the latest fashions which the store was trying to promote. One passer-by commented: "I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought they were real women

at first. It certainly caught my attention!" A spokesman for the Xi Dan Mall said: "We wanted to attract more people, especially young people, to shop in our store during the national holiday. "It certainly seems to have worked - we had a lot more people coming into the shop to check what it was all about."

Depressed People Often Hide Symptoms from Doctors

F

amily doctors and other primary care physicians are often the first health professionals to learn that a patient is depressed, but that doesn’t mean they identify all of the depression cases that walk through their offices. Far from it: A new survey of California adults has found that 43% of people would keep their depression symptoms to themselves during a doctor’s appointment, because they feel their

emotional difficulties are off-topic, they don’t want to be prescribed antidepressants, or they’re afraid a record of the conversation will be seen by employers. The results aren’t especially surprising, but they do highlight the need to educate patients, doctors, and nurses about the importance of discussing mood problems during checkups and other routine appointments, says study coauthor Richard Kravitz, MD, a professor of internal medicine at the University of California, Davis. “The primary care sector cares for a majority of patients with mental health conditions in America, and we know that depression is undertreated everywhere,” Dr. Kravitz says. “The number one reason for that is because recognition of depression starts with disclosure from the patient.” Gerard Sanacora, PhD, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, says this study offers more evidence that the stigma surrounding mental illness is still an obstacle that prevents many people from seeking effective, timely treatment. “I was actually surprised that even more people didn’t feel that it was a burden to talk to their doctor,” says Sanacora, who was not involved in the study. He suspects that if the survey hadn’t been conducted in California—one of the states most accepting of mental illLaser Teeth Whitening Fast ness, he says—the patients would have Becoming a Regular Treatment been even more hesitant to discuss depression. The National Institute of Mental Health funded the survey and analysis. The results were published today in the Annals of Family Medicine. surance, demographics, and family and personal histories of mental health problems. The researchers then asked the respondents whether 11 potential reasons for not wanting to talk with a doctor about depression applied to them a little, a lot, or not at all. (The reasons were gathered from focus groups in a related study.) The most common concern, which 23% of respondents said applied a lot to them, was that the doctor would recommend antidepressants. Other popular reasons were that it’s not a primary care physician’s job to deal with emotional issues (16%) and that their medical records could fall into the hands of an employer or another outside party (15%). Respondents also expressed fear about being referred to a specialist or being labeled a “psychiatric patient.” The people who had the most to gain from talking with their doctor—individuals with moderate to severe depression symptoms at the time of the phone survey—subscribed to the most beliefs that would prevent them from doing so. This reluctance among patients is crucial to overcome, Sanacora says, because the longer depression goes undiagnosed, the harder it can be to treat and the more permanent damage it can do. “There’s increasing evidence that the state of being depressed could actually be injurious to the brain,” he says.“Delaying treatment is probably the worst thing a patient can do for their mental health.” Primary care physicians need to actively promote mental-health treatment in their offices, Dr. Kravitz says. “Putting pamphlets in the waiting rooms, using appropriate posters, or providing questionnaires to patients are all ways to show that depression lies within the scope of their practice,” he says. Dr. Kravitz and his colleagues are also developing a public service an-

nouncement targeted toward high-risk demographic groups. In the survey, for instance, people who were female, Hispanic, had no family history of depression, and had less education or lower household income were all more likely than their peers to express reluctance about talking with their doctors. Sanacora says that doctors can also do a better job at picking up on physical signs of depression that patients may be more vocal about, such as chronic pain, lack of appetite, and sleep problems. “The emotional aspect is only a small part,” he says. “Physicians need to consider these other symptoms, and ask some pointed questions. That may eventually lead to more diagnoses.”

Bladder Training Tips to Reduce Bathroom Trips

By Megan Fennell

Overactive bladder It's important to go the bathroom when you need to. "Holding it" can actually stretch your bladder, making it difficult to empty it completely. But there's such a thing as going too often. (The norm is around seven bathroom trips daily.) An overactive bladder contracts abnormally, triggering the urge to urinate too often. This can lead to urge incontinence, which occurs when you suddenly feel a strong urge to urinate but don't make it to the bathroom in time. The good news is that bladder training can help. Here's how. Watch your liquid intake Drinking 10 to 12 glasses of water a day (80 to 96 ounces) may cause you to go every hour or two, which is too often, says Harvey Winkler, MD, cochief of urogynecology and director of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at North Shore–Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y. "The normal bladder wants to empty out at about 8 ounces." Cheryl Iglesia, MD, section director of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Washington Hospital Center, in D.C., tells patients to drink when thirsty, but limit the total to 70

ounces of liquid a day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol because of their diuretic effects.

Log your bathroom trips The first step in bladder training is to keep a voiding diary. For two or three days, make a note of every time you urinate as well as what you drink. This information will give you a baseline as you work on reducing trips. As you go through the bladder training process, a voiding diary helps you gauge your progress and keeps you motivated.

Time your bathroom trips Based on the information from your voiding diary, come up with a comfortable interval between bathroom trips. Then set an interval timer or stopwatch and keep to this schedule during your waking hours. This is known as "timed voiding." If the time is up and you don't

have to go, empty your bladder anyhow. You should also empty your bladder when you wake up in the morning. At night, only go if you wake up and feel the urge. Increase the time between trips

Once you're comfortable with your voiding schedule, extend the amount of time between bathroom trips by 15 minutes. For example, if you're urinating every hour and 15 minutes, stretch that out to an hour and a half for a week.

Lee Cooper Packit Jeans Lee Cooper designed Packit jeans in the 1970s to help a man’s bulge appear larger. Singers such as Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi wore the pants to increase their onstage “presence”. (But that’s not the reason why Bruce Springsteen is called “The Boss!”) Tight jeans is known to hamper concupiscence (libido) whereas the bigger bulge in the jeans enhances comfort. It was not the first time that Lee Cooper raised some eyebrows. They also designed the Butt Couture jeans which had a cut in the back through which the wearers displayed their buttocks. Lee Cooper Brands was established in 1908 by Morris Cooper as M. Cooper (Overalls) Ltd and was re-branded to its current name in 1940.

The great global climate change Did the earth get hotter? Yes. Is it common? Yes. Since 1900, the average temperature has increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius. Over the past 300 years, the temperature has risen by about 0.6 °C. Of course, we didn’t have cars and electricity for most of this time. So the great climate debate is not if the earth is getting hot or not but if or how we earthlings are having an impact on the global climate. Oldest boats Rock drawings from the Red Sea site of Wadi Hammamat, dated to around 4000 BC, show that ancient Egyptian boats were made from papyrus and reeds. Yet the world’s earliest known plank-built ship, dated to 2600 BC, was discovered next to the Great Pyramid in 1952. Made from cedar and sycamore wood, it was in almost perfect state of preservation, stored dismantled into 1,224 parts. Reconstructed, the vessel was 142 feet (43 metres) long and 19 feet (5,8 metres) wide, displacing some 40 tons. Modern toilet invented by watchmaker It is often incorrectly quoted that the toilet was invented by a Mr Thomas Crapper in the 18th century. Actually, simple toilets have been used since Babylonian times. In 1596, John Harrington invented an indoor water closet for Queen Elizabeth I. But Harrington then published a book with tasteless puns about his own invention. The toilet then dropped into obscurity for nearly 200 years. In 1775, London watchmaker Alexander Cummings patented the forerunner of today’s toilet. the standard flush toilet.

Fear of meltdown at Chernobyl reactor

MAY 14. The extent of the threat posed by the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union, seriously damaged in an explosion last month, is still uncertain. According to a German expert, Dr Thomas Roser, the molten white hot core may be melting its way through the concrete floor of the reactor, on its way to contaminating the Dnieper river. However, the Soviet academician Yevgeny Velikhov says the reactor is no longer a hazard, though he admitted that the danger of a meltdown had existed earlier. Work is under way to encase the reactor in concrete. Pictures of the empty town of Chernobyl, shown on Soviet television last night, suggest that the authorities regard the situation as under control.

Space Shuttle explodes on takeoff

Soviet reactor is on fire

JAN 28. The American space shuttle Challenger exploded seconds after lift-off today, killing its crew of seven. Among them was Christa McAuliffe, a schoolteacher selected as the first to fly in the "citizen in space" programme. Her husband and children, along with the families of other astronauts, witnessed the disaster. Challenger was 72 seconds into its flight, travelling at nearly 2,000 mph at a height of ten miles, when it was suddenly enveloped in a red, orange and white fireball as thousands of tons of liquid hydrogen and oxygen fuel exploded. Photographs taken by chase planes reveal that there was a prelude: a small tongue of flame appeared on one of the external booster rockets soon after lift-off and was quickly followed by another. Then a halo of flame grew round the base of the booster just before the explosion. However, the crew reported nothing abnormal. The flight had been postponed five times, three of them because of bad weather. The temperature the night before launch fell to eight degrees fahrenheit below freezing and the vehicle was covered with icicles which had to be chipped off by hand. Whether the highly unusual conditions had anything to do with the disaster is unknown. The tragedy has dealt a devastating blow to the shuttle programme, already in difficulties because of cost overruns. These are the first American fatalities in space, though three astronauts died in a launch pad fire in 1967.

OCT 22. General Motors today became the fourth big US business to abandon operations in South Africa. The others are Honeywell, IBM and Warners. General Motors said they have been losing money in their South African plant, but their decision has clearly been influenced by this month's overwhelming vote for sanctions by the Senate, despite President Reagan's appeal for delay. The US will now ban imports of South African iron, steel, coal, uranium, textiles and farm produce; new loans and investments are also banned.

Top oil minister is fired by Saudi King OCT 28. Sheik Yamani, Saudi Arabia's oil minister for 24 years, was given his marching orders today by King Fahd. Ahmed Zaki Yamani was effectively at the helm of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which the Saudis were instrumental in founding in 1960. Although he engineered the 1973 oil embargo that led to a tenfold rise in oil prices, he was seen as a moderate in OPEC. Recently he is reported to have sold Saudi oil at less than OPEC rates, which may have prompted his dismissal.

APRIL 30. A Russian nuclear reactor is ablaze after what could turn out to be the world's worst civil nuclear disaster. The Soviet Union admitted this today - four days after the accident occurred - as high radiation levels were detected in Scandinavia. According to the brief Russian statement, the Number 4 reactor at Chernobyl power station in the Ukraine is affected. The other three reactors in the plant have been shut down. Two people have been killed and nearby places evacuated, the

statement on Soviet television said. Pictures taken by American satellites indicate that the top of the reactor was blown off in an explosion. The graphite moderator of the reactor is on fire and the Russians have asked for help in fighting it from Sweden and West Germany, but offers of assistance, including one from the International Atomic Energy Agency, of which Russia is a member, have been refused. How much radioactivity has escaped is un-

known, but if the core is exposed, as the pictures suggest, it will be substantial. Russian reactors do not have containment buildings, normal in the West, to prevent the release of radioactivity after an accident. Local reports say 15,000 people have been moved from Pripyat, but life in Kiev, 60 miles from Chernobyl, seems normal. There is no immediate danger in western Europe, though in the long term radiation from fallout could cause cancers.
