TOP INNOVATION AWARD FOR MAYO FARM MACHINERY FIRM M

ALONE Farm Machinery, based in Ballyglass, near Claremorris, has just been announced as the overall winner in the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena Awards for 2020. This dynamic young company, with a commitment to innovation and creativity in the agricultural sector, achieved the award after developing a faster, more efficient means of transporting bales. The winning company’s entry, The Malone Express, is a 16-bale trailer which can accommodate 16 round bales on a chassis that is shorter than other comparable machines on the market. This makes the implement easier to manoeuvre while accommodating a large quantity of bales. Founded by Claremorris man Michael Malone in 1999 the company now employs 32 people and distributes a wide range of products to three different continents. Their agricultural products include self-loading wagons, post drivers, toppers, log splitters and mowers. Central to their growth has been their focus on understanding and appreciating the needs of customers. Michael had to work all the hours available to him at the outset to ensure the company got off the ground, starting with one employee, making log splitters and post drivers. In 2003 he began making toppers which proved a big market for the

Said Michael: The Award opens a huge window into our innovation and demonstrates to our customers that we are able to make their workload safer and easier ...and much more efficient as this implement is a one-

Ultan Conlon Live at Royal Theatre

F

ANS of singer/songwriter Ultan Conlon are in for a treat in the midst of a period where live performances are few and far between in these neck of the woods. The Loughrea-born artist plays The Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on Saturday, September 19th. Conlon found a haven for his unique sound and sensibility in Los Angeles, CA with Nickel Creek’s Grammy Award-winning Sean Watkins producing Ultan’s recently-released record, “There’s a Waltz”. Ultan was introduced to Sean in LA in 2017 while playing some shows there including one as Largo, the well-known nightclub where Sean and Sara Watkins hosted The Watkins Family Hour. Ultan says: “When I met the musicians that Sean brought on board to record my songs and we played the first few bars, I knew this record was gonna make itself, under ghe influence of Sean navigating us all ever so gently”. That formidable group of musicians includes producer Sean Watkins on numerous instruments; Don Heffington – drums (Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams Ron Sexsmith); Sebastian Steinberg – Bass, Double Bass (Iron and Wine, Neil Diamond, KD Lang); Gabe Witcher – Fiddle (Paul Simon, Beck); Rich Hinman – Pedal Steel (KD Lang, St. Vincent); Sara Watkins – Backing Vocals (Nickle Creek, I’m With Her) and Tyler Chester – B3, piano (Jackson Browne, Andrew Bird). Conlon’s poetically-enigmatic songs and “lyrical gems” (No Depression) often stem for his own personal experiences, whether he is reflecting on the dark days of his battle with alcohol addiction (“A Long Way Back”), the isolation incurred by the digital universe (“World from a Window”), anxiety concerning the fate of the world (“A Landslide”) or journeying towards self-acceptance and love (“There’s a Waltz”) Ultan explains the evolution for this song began when his kitten, “Kitty” was “staring out the window all day and there I was feeling so sorry for her limited

life, looking out at birds and cars, and then I noticed myself stuck on Twitter and Instagram, scrolling at mind-numbing crap. The song expanded from that moment into a realisation that so many of us are not immune to spending much of our lives on the windows of one’s computers or cell phones” If there’s a melancholy within the observations of “Window” “Sparks of the Divine” brings a more exuberant optimism into the equation with an ode to love: ‘Turn to me quietly and whisper that you are mine; break it to me gently like you’re telling me for the first time Not looking for much, but you give me Something Divine”. Conlon’s voice has been

likened by many music writers to Roy Orbison and his writer’s voice brings forth original songs that combine depths of feeling, introspection and modesty, as witnessed in “Moments in Time” . . . out of the dark I arrive Though I’m not the travelling kind with mind on fire it’s hardly trailblazing . . . But along the trail of the same song, his thoughts are illuminated by the . . . Windows to stars that shine in the dark from above Where our love defies Moments in Time, Where our love resides Moments in Time. The title track “There’s a Waltz” surprisingly starts out in 4/4 time, saving the shift into waltz-time only towards the end. As with all of Ultan’s songs

on this new collection, the rewards, be they deferred, are always reaching to connect to the listener’s heart and soul. Ultan has shared the stage with the likes of John Fogarty, Mavis Staples, Shelby Lynne, Jackson Browne, Bryan Ferry, John Grant, Eddi Reader, Patty Griffin and Richard Hawley, among others. Many of his critically-acclaimed songs have received extensive airplay in Ireland (RTE 1, Lyric FM, KCLR) and the UK (BBC). “There’s a Waltz” is Ultan’s fourth record. C

ARERS, single parents, those with disabilities and other groups who cannot or do not want to attend campus are being urged to apply for IT Sligo’s acclaimed Writing and Literature degree. IT Sligo wants to open its doors to people who may not have considered a third-level education because of barriers they face attending campus fulltime. From September 14, students can apply for the BA (Hons) Writing and Literature course (SG254) through “Available Places” on the CAO. This means that anyone who didn’t complete the CAO still has a chance to register their interest for the 2020 academic year. Available Places” is open to all Leaving Cert students (this year and in the past), as well as mature students and will remain open for two weeks from September 14. Writing and Literature programme materials and classes will be delivered via IT Sligo’s Virtual Learning Environment with extra tutorials available, alongside support from IT Sligo’s ETB partners who will provide access to their facilities if needed. IT Sligo has implemented this innovative model of learning – as part of the Higher Education for All initiative – to better facilitate equality of opportunity and access to higher education across Ireland. This course is supported by Family Carers Ireland, Disability Federation Ireland, Donegal ETB and Mayo-Sligo Leitrim ETB and these organisations will provide advice on access and needs issues. The course is also available to those who are physically able to attend campus but have chosen not to as a result of Covid-19 worries. IT Sligo is a leading provider of online learning with 16 years’ experience in the development and delivery of distance education making it a great choice for anyone looking to study remotely. The brand-new online course draws on the experience of its current campus-based course of the same name which is now in

IT Sligo lecturer, poet and author, Una Mannion its fourth year. Since the campus course began in 2016, a number of well-established writers, including Laureate for Irish Fiction, Sebastian Barry, and Pat McCabe have presented talks, while author and poet, Una Mannion, screenwriter and director, Marion Quinn, and poet and novelist, Alice Lyons, teach on the course. Commenting, Dr Una Mannion, Programme Chair of the Writing and Literature fulltime oncampus course and author said: "The Writing and Literature course at IT Sligo is enormously successful and is a flagship undergraduate writing course in Ireland. The online option allows us to open the course to writers

all over Ireland who because of circumstances or work commitments can't commute to Sligo. We are building an online environment where they will feel they are part of a writing community with many opportunities to share their work, attend online readings and contribute. “The Writing and Literature online course is a brilliant choice for writers as it immerses students in intensive, applied writing covering a range of genres from fiction, non-fiction, poetry, play writing, to screen writing, digital storytelling and cultural journalism. “Many of our students have published work produced during

the course and they have also gained a range of transferable skills including a strong foundation in English literature.” Project Manager for the Centre for Online Learning, Louise O’Gorman said: “With our strong commitment to quality and academic excellence we will support access for students via a number of pre-enrolment tools to build their self-confidence and help them evaluate their skills and strengths. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

Mayo EUROSPAR Supermarkets supporting “Food for Ireland” F rom September 17th until 20th two Mayo EUROSPAR Supermarkets will be supporting a charity initiative called ‘Food For Ireland’, which is aimed at addressing the unprecedented demand on charities and communities across Ireland affected by Covid-19. The charity FoodCloud works with businesses and retailers to redistribute surplus food to those who need it most and the current reality is that the Covid19 pandemic has upended the lives of the most vulnerable in our society, with FoodCloud reporting a 70% increase in demand for the supply of food since March. In that time, FoodCloud have distributed the equivalent of 2.3 million meals to those most in need. Despite the generosity of FoodCloud’s supporters and partners, they are struggling to meet the growing demand. That is why, from September 17th to 20th, Annette Brogan’s EUROSPAR Belmullet and Derek Kennedy’s EUROSPAR Swinford will be asking their shoppers to donate much needed non-perishable food, which will then be redistributed directly by FoodCloud to charities across Mayo and Ireland. The ambition of this appeal is to ensure that no-one goes hungry during the Covid19 pandemic, especially the hundreds and thousands of vulnerable families and people in communities across our Island. We can all do our bit to alleviate the pain and suffering of those in our communities and the two Mayo based EUROSPAR Supermarkets are proud to be a part of this initiative. Supermarket, shoppers are asked to add non-perishable items such as breakfast cereals, cooking sauces, hot drinks, rice and pasta, tinned soups and beans, and tinned fruits including tomatoes to their trolley. Shoppers will then pay for their groceries in the normal way and then donate whatever they wish by placing it in the trolley or receptacle designated for the ‘Food For Ireland’ appeal. Commenting Malachy Hanberry, EUROSPAR Managing Director said: “These EUROSPAR Retailers have a long tradition of supporting charities and those most vulnerable in our society. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis they have been providing their shoppers and local communities with a safe and healthy shopping environment and their support of this initiative is another example of

their commitment to the communities they serve.” FoodCloud CEO Iseult Ward said: “Noone should go hungry during the Covid-19 pandemic; however, the reality is there are hundreds and thousands of vulnerable families and people in communities across our Island who cannot get access to food. “This initiative shows how business can be at the forefront of leading social change providing a lifeline to those who need food the most.” FoodCloud (CHY 21177) was established in 2013 by Iseult Ward and Aoibheann O’Brien. It provides an end-to-end solution for the distribution and reuse of surplus food which has a sustainable impact on the global environment, through their efficient technology and warehouse solution.

Support Enable Ireland’s “Life With No Limits” Campaign in Mayo

E

nable Ireland’s annual ‘Life With No Limits’ campaign takes place from 1930 September this year. The public can support Enable Ireland’s services for over 9,200 children and adults with disabilities by purchasing Life With No Limits merchandise from Enable Ireland’s charity shop on Market Square in Castlebar in Mayo or by donating online at www.enableireland.ie. The campaign provides a platform for children and adults with disabilities using Enable Ireland services to share their life experiences while raising much-needed funds to support the charity’s work. This year more than ever, the charity is relying on the public’s support for their vital therapy and support services. Like many charities, Enable Ireland has been significantly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and is facing a loss of €1.5million in funding due to the cancellation of fundraising events and their charity shops being closed for three months. This year’s Life with No Limits champion is Cillian McSweeney. Cillian is a talented songwriter and a music lover. He plays and writes music using assistive technology on his computer. Cillian attends Enable Ireland services in Little Island, Cork. Cillian says, “Technology is a huge part of my life. It allows me to be independent as I also use a power wheelchair using head switches and I use eyegaze technology to write and communicate. My message for others is not to give up hoping. I have always had a dream - I always wanted to perform with a band, and to write music. My disability has never bothered me, I have always believed in myself. I believe you can make your own dreams come true. I have a lot of hope and that gives me strength.” Donal Kitt, Enable Ireland National Fundraising Manager comments on the campaign, “It is a really positive campaign and vitally important for raising awareness of living with a disability and raising funds

Four Roscommon producers shortlisted for Blas na hEireann awards

T

he team at Blas na hÉireann have been working tirelessly since March to ensure that Blas 2020 goes ahead, maintaining their commitment to celebrating the very best in Irish food and drink. Chairperson, Artie Clifford feels that now, more than ever it is essential to shine a spotlight and give that all important clap on the back to the talented producers dotted around the island. Faced with the restrictions around college campuses still being in place and under the watchful eye of the academic director Professor Joe Kerry of UCC, the Blas judging relocated to Dingle in July, ensuring the judging was handled with the same care and attention as always. The finalists shortlisted from Roscommon across a range of different categories are Castlemine Farm, Oliver Carty, VOA Foods Ltd. Incorporating Do Me A Flavour and Waldron Family. After the initial first round

of judging, the top scoring products from a number of categories went through a second round of tasting, both in Dingle and at satellite venues across the country. In conjunction with UCC these results were studied and the findings showed that the results based on two entirely separate panels returned the exact same rankings. Therefore, these results will be used to determine the winners of Blas na hÉireann 2020 as the difficult decision has been made to cancel the weekend of events in Dingle in October. The annual gathering that takes place each year is an important part of the Blas experience and the team are working hard to move as many events to a virtual format as is possible. Due to the success of the digital Backyard in April, and the fact that the Backyard has become a very important aspect of the Blas weekend, there will be a series of Backyard panels online this year. An exciting and

Sligo town in the running for Ireland’s most enterprising town Awards Sligo town is among the finalists announced for Bank of Ireland’s Begin Together Awards 2020. This year, the awards recognise business and community groups who have come together to support their local area as they start to rebuild and recover from the impact of COVID-19. A total awards prize fund of over €200,000 is available to finalists to help reboot local economies across the island of Ireland. 21 awards are involved with the overall winner receiving €50,000 and the title of Ireland’s ‘Most Enterprising

North West Tool Hire

Town’. There is also a prize of €20,000 for the winner of the ‘Rising Star’ award. Reflecting the new challenges that communities and businesses currently face as a result of the pandemic three special COVID-response awards have been introduced: • Local Town Promotion Initiative - A marketing or promotional campaign designed to help kick-start the local economy. • Local Community Enterprise Initiative - A local enterprise initiative established

specifically to ease the impact of COVID19, or one that has repurposed itself during the pandemic. •Local Business and Community Response Initiative – A joint initiative by local businesses and the community to manage the impact of COVID-19 through lockdown and beyond as towns start to reopen. Sligo town will be competing with towns from across the island of Ireland. The judging panel will review all finalists in September and the winners will be announced on Virgin Media TV’s Ireland AM in early October. The awards initiative this year is being fast-tracked to provide funding to winning towns in October in order to directly assist their COVID-19 recovery. Commenting on the finalist announcement, Tara Rodgers, Head of Bank of Ireland for County Sligo said: “Congratulations to Sligo town on becoming a finalist in this year’s Bank of Ireland Begin Together Awards. Through these awards we are supporting businesses and communities across the island of Ireland impacted by the COVID19 pandemic as they start to rebuild and get back on their feet. We have seen that incredible and powerful things can be achieved when communities, business groups and local authorities come together to meet their own challenges and make their own opportunities. I would like to wish Sligo town the very best luck in the competition.” The Begin Together Awards fund is part of wider €1 million Bank of Ireland support for local enterprise and community groups this year.

Consumers concerned about local economic impact of pub closures

A

S the country prepares for the imminent opening of our “wet” pubs, research carried out by the drinks industry reveals that almost two thirds of Irish consumers are concerned about the impact of prolonged pub closures on the local economy. The research, released as part of DIGI’s Support Your Local campaign, reveals that over half of pubs are reported temporarily or permanently closed (56%) as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. Broken down further, 61% of people living in rural areas reported a local pub closure, compared to 50% in urban areas. These prolonged pub closures have raised a number of concerns for those within local communities, with over 60% of people concerned about the knock-on effects of the restrictions on the local economy. According to the research, the main concerns surrounding the closure of pubs in local areas include: • The loss of jobs within the local community (78%) • The negative impact on supporting industries (75%) • The isolation and loneliness of elderly people within the community (67%) • The lack of support for musicians and the arts (67%).

Community impact In addition to the economic concerns, people have also noticed significant changes to their local communities as a direct result of pub closures. According to the research, almost six in ten people (59%) visited their local pub at least once a month before the Covid19 pandemic. Since the government implemented restrictions on the opening of pubs, half (53%) feel that the vibrancy of the community has dampened, with 50% also noting a decrease in the level of community spirit and morale among the community. Supporting the industry Over (72%) of the Irish population now believe that the government needs to step in and provide support measures to save the drinks and hospitality industry.

• Respite & Convalescene Care Services • Short Term, Long Term and Day Care Services • All Rooms Private / Semi-Private • Nursing Home Support Grant (Fair Deal) Available • 24 Hour Professional Nursing Care • Daily GP Visits and In-House Physio • All Services available, Hairdressing etc • Daily activities including Weekly Music Sessions • All spiritual needs attended to

Three fifths of the population believe that local publicans will act responsibly and ensure public health measures and guidelines are enforced correctly, while the vast majority (90%) say that they are also taking personal responsibility for their health and safety by adhering to public health advice, suggesting that most will be compliant with all pub reopening requirements. Commenting, Rosemary Garth, Chair of DIGI and Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at Irish Distillers, said: “The prolonged closure of pubs in Ireland is not only having a negative effect on those who are directly involved in the industry: it is having widespread impact on local communities. “This is truly devastating to see. According to our research, the vast majority of people in Ireland have noticed significant change to their local community, with a particular decline in community spirits and morale. “The role of the pub in local communities has never been more prominent. It is only now, as many pubs

remain shut or have closed permanently as a result of the lockdown, that people are recognising how important the industry is for local wellbeing, job creation, and the broader economy. “To ensure that pubs in local communities can not only reopen, but reopen with a fighting chance of recovery, the Government must not delay any longer. “We must look to reopen the pubs immediately, putting meaningful supports in place to allow them to recover from the damage of the past six months. “To help facilitate this, the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland is calling on the government to introduce a 15% reduction in excise tax in Ireland, which currently poses a threat to both the short and longterm viability of the drinks and hospitality sector. “Without a reduction in excise tax levels for the sector, pubs, already indebted and at reduced capacity, will reopen with the second highest rates in the EU. This will put them on an immediate backfoot and threaten more permanent closures.”

Mayo academic among prestigious Lero Director’s Prize winners Professor Kieran Conboy of Aghamore is among eight researchers from five leading Irish universities awarded Lero Director’s Prizes at an online ceremony today. This is the second year of the annual awards presented by Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, to honour members working across its 11 academic partner institutes nationwide. Awards were presented to academics, researchers and support staff from NUI Galway, University College Dublin, University of Limerick, Maynooth University and Dublin City University. The Lero Director’s Prizes were presented at the annual gathering of Lero members which was held online this year for the first time in the centre’s 15year history. Closing the conference, Professor Brian Fitzgerald, Director of Lero, told members that their resilience and dedication has meant that Lero has continued and, in many cases, expanded its ground-breaking work despite the COVID-19 pandemic. “I am constantly impressed by the women and men who are the backbone of our world-leading research centre. Their resilience, ingenuity and ambition to provide research-based solutions and insights to resolve problems, have not been derailed by a pandemic that has transformed so many other facets of modern living. “This year, Lero celebrates the 15th anniversary of its foundation. Since 2005, Lero has established itself as one of the top software research centres in the world and this is because of its people. 2020 has brought unique

Today we recognise the resilience and ingenuity of Lero’s academics and researchers in providing scientific and technological solutions to global issues. We also acknowledge their dedication to the centre, to engaging the public and industry and to diversity and inclusion in our work and in our world,” Professor Fitzgerald said. This is the first year that the Professor Rory O’Connor Prize for Outstanding Service to Lero was presented, in memory of the late Lero and DCU researcher.

FOR MEN, WOMEN & COUPLES

“The Professor Rory O’Connor Prize for Outstanding Service to Lero is a highlight of the Lero Director’s Prize programme and we are very grateful to the family of our late colleague Rory for allowing us to name this prize in his honour. Such was the strength of nominations in this category, we decided to present two awards – one to Lero Principal Investigator Professor Kieran Conboy of NUI Galway and a second to Dara O’Connor, a member of the centre’s support team based in University of Limerick,” Professor Fitzgerald stated.

Ballina Fringe Festival

Northwest Express September, 2020

P

Putting fun back on the agenda for Ballina, 9th-18th October

Adapted arts festival focuses on local response to Covid-19, self-guided events and community street art featuring renowned street artist Maser

lanning a pandemic festival is challenging, but the committee behind arts festival Ballina Fringe Festival were determined to deliver a programme this year, one of the few Mayo festivals to proceed in 2020. From October 9-18, Ballina Fringe Festival takes to the streets – literally – with a range of events, tours, and discoveries for the people of Ballina and visitors to the town in a pandemic-friendly arts festival, many of which will be selfguided and free of charge, making them accessible to as many people as possible. Festival Chairman Sean Walsh explains: “We’re delighted to announce our 2020 programme. This year has presented us with very significant challenges, but we felt it was more important now than ever to collectively acknowledge the adversity of recent months, recognise the resilience of Ballina and celebrate our spirit and creativity. Given our collective reliance on the arts during lockdown, we also really wanted to take the chance to support local artists and those further afield.” Included in this year’s

programme, themed ‘Place’, will be a series of intimate music gigs in interesting sessions featuring Greg Pearle, Billow Wood, harpist Laoise Kelly and musicians David Munnelly and Shane McGowan, a literary and musical exploration of Mayo’s returned diaspora with John Hoban, a talk with writer Kevin Toolis and undertaker David McGowan on death, a writer’s workshop featuring ‘Solar Bones’ author Mike McCormack with local author Kate Kerrigan, ‘Giving Voice to Direct Provision’, a conversation between poet and co-editor of ‘Correspondences’, Jessica Traynor and two of the artists featured in the anthology, Annemarie Ni Churreáin & Evgeny Shtorn. A lockdown photography exhibition and curated art trail exhibition by local artists will be presented throughout the town centre, with online guides. The festival this year also reaches out to Ballycastle and will feature a gallery afternoon hosted by Director Una Forde in the newly opened Ballinglen Museum of Contemporary Irish Art featuring a tour and artists talks. Rounding off the programme will be a photography exhibition, a podcast

series and a Saturday drive-in movie night at Mayo-Sligo Mart, featuring some cult classics. Many events can be enjoyed in comfort indoors - some from home and at all times, safety and adherence to Covid-19 guidelines will be a priority.

Pure Ballina returns this year, supported again by Creative Ireland through Mayo County Council, Dulux and Archers. Dublin-based contemporary artist Maser will work with the Foroige Neighbourhood Youth Project to deliver a flagship and community mural in the heart

of Ballina. Other surprise projects are in the pipeline. Bookings will open and a full programme will be available on www.ballinafringefestival.ie in the coming days, and Ballina Fringe Festival can be found on all the main social media channels.

IS BODY WEIGHT AFFECTED BY WHEN YOU EAT? Here’s What Science Knows So Far... M

ost diet and health advice is broadly based on the assumption that a calorie is a calorie (and it doesn’t matter when they’re consumed). But some research suggests that our bodies actually use calories more efficiently when consumed in the morning as opposed to the evening. This points to a strategy that could be beneficial for weight loss. While there are many reasons for this phenomenon, one may be our circadian rhythm. This is the natural, internal process that regulates our sleep-wake cycle over a 24-hour period. Not only does our circadian rhythm make us feel tired at night and alert during the day, it also regulates the timing of the body’s processes – including digestion, metabolism, and appetite regulation – by secreting certain hormones based on what and when we eat, our physical activity and time of day. However, this internal process can be altered by eating or exercising at abnormal times of the day. Changes to our circadian rhythm can impact our physical and mental health, and our immunity. Given how important the circadian rhythm is for our bodies and overall health, our team wanted to know what effect it has on our metabolism. We conducted a review that examined studies in humans whose circadian rhythms had been disrupted on purpose by researchers, or because of night eating syndrome, where a person ate more than 25% of their daily calories in the evening or middle of

the night. Based on these studies, it was clear that our bodies do indeed prefer us to eat during daylight hours – in sync with our natural circadian rhythm. Most of the studies showed that intentional circadian rhythm disruption and night eating both caused changes to many important hormones that regulate appetite, energy expenditure and glucose regulation (resulting in changes in the levels of circulating insulin, leptin, cortisol and other appetite hormones in the blood). Changes to these hormones could theoretically increase appetite while decreasing energy levels, leading to more calories eaten but fewer burned throughout the day. This could potentially lead to weight gain, but more research on this effect in humans is needed. But given that all the studies were investigating different things (and so had different results), and they didn’t measure changes in energy intake, expenditure and weight, this makes a suggested link between circadian rhythm disruption and weight gain inconclusive. However, our study does find that the body’s processes work best when you have regular sleep habits and don’t ignore your circadian rhythm. Metabolism and body weight Other studies have also found evidence that suggests time of day influences energy balance and body weight. For example, eating more calories in the late evening has been linked with weight gain and

obesity, possibly because of lower appetite regulation in the evening, or because late meals disrupt circadian rhythms and our energy levels – making us less likely to exercise the following day.

Eating most of your calories in the morning may also lead to greater weight loss. This weight loss seems to occur despite similar daily food intake and activity levels to those who ate more calories in the afternoon or evening. Though it’s not known why this is the case, it may be because people who miss breakfast snack more in the evening – or it could be because later food intake disrupts circadian rhythms. However, it should be noted that not all studies agree that eating most of your day’s calories in the morning leads to greater weight loss. It has also been shown that higher levels of physical activity in people who eat breakfast (compared to those who didn’t) may contribute to greater weight loss, so long as more calories are eaten in the morning instead of the evening. Again, researchers aren’t entirely sure why, but the theory is that morning feeding gives people more energy during the day, so they may be more active. In contrast, consuming calories in the evening doesn’t promote activity. Calories late in the evening may also disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to overall greater feelings of tiredness the next day and reduced physical activity. A recent study also found

changes in the brain’s signals that control food reward in response to feeding time. The researchers think that eating more calories in the morning may improve body weight by reinforcing the brain’s reward centres related to food – therefore reducing overeating. Time-restricted feeding (sometimes known as “intermittent fasting”) is another approach gaining interest. This is when people are only able to eat within a specific timeframe over the day (such as over an eight or 12-hour period). Research shows this appears to support weight loss predominantly through reducing calorie intake, likely because there’s less time to eat. Intermittent fasting may also reinforce the natural circadian rhythm by stopping late-night eating. While there’s plenty of evidence supporting daytime eating as it’s more in line with our natural circadian rhythm, more research is needed to fully understand the effect that this has on body weight. Of course, the type of foods you choose and your portion sizes have the biggest impact on your health. But if it’s the case that eating time is linked to differences in body weight and health, then when you eat may also need to be included in dietary advice.
