hile most people would balk at mention of Christmas coming so early in the year, there is one instance where it's important to mention the looming event. Budgeting is always difficult, in times of economic recovery, but it is people at the lowest end of the income bracket who tend to struggle the most in the lead-up to the festive season. And, unfortunately there are plenty of enterprising, legal and illegal lending businesses out there that will capitalise on this struggle. For many years now there has been talk of a crackdown on the illegal lending trade. Back in 2013 Marc MacSharry (then Senator) published a bill (which unfortunately wasn't passed) to this end and countless others highlighted it as an area that needed to be addressed. However, we have seen very little action taken. Such individuals and gangs in society who prey on the poorest should surely be held accountable for their actions. Mr. MacSharry himself has said with regard to the matter: "We cannot afford to ignore the factors that are fuelling the loan shark business in Ireland. We need to get tough with those taking advantage of people in desperate financial difficulty" and further, that "We need to act and legislate for this as matter of urgency." Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of Deputy MacSharry and others such legislation has not yet come into effect and the cycle looks set to continue with the increasing numbers of options for highinterest lending available in today's market. Continued from front page We are all familiar with the term 'loan shark', and the frightening, often grossly aggressive means they can employ to retrieve greatly inflated sums from their clients. But it can be surprisingly difficult to make the right choice in a market saturated with legal 'payday loans' companies and flashy internet advertising for high interest lending sites as well. Unregulated, illegal lending still exists, but almost as risky is the legal side of the same business. With many of these legal moneylending companies loaning short-term, high interest amounts (often at APRs almost as high as a loan shark) advertising directly to the unemployed, or people with bad credit ratings and mortgage arrears, there is no doubt that they capitalise on late repayments. And though the legal side of the industry can't be said to exercise the same level of intimidation and
bullying that illegal lenders are renowned for, that's not to say they have not been found to exert significant pressure on their clients when monies are not paid on time. Credit Unions have long been recognised as a safe and responsible low interest alternative to traditional borrowing or high interest options, but as highlighted by Independent MEP Marian Harkin at the 25th anniversary conference of the Irish League of Credit Unions Foundation last month, these community-based financial institutions are facing their own troubles. Currently, there are over 450 credit unions forced to place their surplus funds on deposit with banks at a rate of less than 1% rather than loan, at reasonable rates, to valid customers. Ms Harkin was clear in her message: “The Credit Union movement must not be unnecessarily hindered in its hugely important work of credit provision and must instead be

Vulnerable still prey for loan sharks encouraged to use its experience and expertise to help citizens in Ireland avoid the clutches of extortionate moneylenders” Manager of Sligo Credit Union, Barry O'Flynn, reassures that despite tougher measures being implemented by the Central Bank, Credit Unions are still lending, and creating a sufficient saving record with them is not overly difficult. His advice to anyone facing into the expense of the approaching festive season is simple; "We encourage anyone who is in a position to do so to join their credit union and create a record with them... Moneylenders make it easy for people to get loans - the cost is, however, oppressive... If we could get one message across, it is that availing of credit from legal and illegal moneylenders may appear easy but the cost is more than 10 times normal credit and the greater cost is being tied into immoral and unjustified costs for many years."

€1.5m Allocted To North West Fisheries Local Action Group Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., that €1.5m will be allocated to the North West Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) as part of a nationwide €12m package. The €12m package represents an eight fold increase on the previous FLAG scheme. The North West FLAG which operates along the Mayo and Sligo coastlines aims to set out the priorities for development and support in the area and works to nurture and develop fishing communities here in County Mayo. The Taoiseach said he welcomes the announcement of €1.5m for the Northwest FLAG. The aim of the FLAG scheme is to support job creation and promote innovation in coastal communities in Mayo, as well as enhancing environmental assets and promoting maritime cultural heritage. Mr Kenny said job creation and rural development are key priorities for this government and he is confident this funding will help create many opportunities for coastal communities throughout the county."

Longford Council Chief Executive defends IDA performance in county The Chief Executive of Longford County Council is defending the IDA’s work in relation to the county. The authority often comes under fire for not bringing enough prospective companies on visits to the county, but Paddy Mahon says this measurement isn’t an accurate reflection of their work. Speaking during an interview with Shannonside FM News on a wide range of topics, Mr Mahon says he is aware that a lot of the work carried out by the IDA, and companies they’re involved with, is kept deliberately low key. He says some companies like Center Parcs, who come to the county are very happy to make their plans public, but others aren’t.

Aidan O'Shea makes big return to basketball
M
ayo footballing star Aidan O’Shea made a return to the basketball court last week after a seven-year break. The 26-year-old, who played with St Declan’s basketball club in Dublin until 2009 and also played Schools’ basketball in Castlebar, was looking forward to returning to the court with his new club, Ej Sligo All-Stars. “I haven’t played since my first year in college, but I’m looking forward to training," he said. "I asked the coach Shane [O’Meara] about joining the team last year and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. This winter is probably one of the first times I’ve a couple of months to myself, and I’ve time now to be able to train with them." Indeed, Ej Sligo All-Stars have a long history with Mayo GAA, with O'Shea being the third footballing hero to walk through their doors, following in the footsteps Ronan McGarrity and Liam McHale. "I’m not nervous about going back - though Ronan is here too so I’m sure there’ll be a lot of slagging! I’m really happy to be back but I don’t have any great expectations of myself - I'll just see how it goes. "I might rope a few more of the Mayo lads into it too, football skills transfer very well over to basketball so I might get a few more down to Sligo - you never know!” he finished. Also speaking about the news, Head Coach Shane O’Meara stated: “We’re delighted to have Aidan on board, he’s a great athlete and there’s been a great buzz around the gym here for his first training session. Sligo is a big sporting county, so it’s great for the young basketball players here - who also love GAA - to see one of the big heroes of the game coming down here and shooting some baskets. We’re really looking forward to seeing him in action over the coming months.”
New land reclamation and drainage scheme overdue says Sligo/Leitrim Deputy Speaking in Leinster House, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Deputy Martin Kenny said he was disappointed at the spirit of the response he received to a parliamentary question seeking grant aid for drainage of marginal land. Speaking to the media, Deputy Kenny said: “The point of my question was that there is a fodder crisis looming and it might go some way in the future to avert shortages if farmers on marginal land could be given some assistance for drainage to improve grass production and management. It has been over 30 years since there was a proper land reclamation and drainage grant available to farmers and the impact of this is being felt now. “The minister has responded that although there is a measure for the clearance of drains under TAMS II included in the Programme for Government, that it would probably not be
approved by the European Commission as a full national Strategic Environment Assessment and Appropriate Assessment would have to be carried out for any potentially affected Natura Areas. “To be honest, I am surprised at this. I cannot imagine why there would be a need to carry out such assessments on land which is already being used as farmland or meadow land for the production of fodder.” Deputy Kenny said there is no logical reason why a drainage scheme cannot be designed to alleviate the problems of farmers and he said this could be done in a way that avoids any negative impact on the environment. “To look at a problem and instead of trying to solve it, coming up with obstacles to a solution, is hardly the job of a department of agriculture working for farmers facing a fodder crisis,” he said in conclusion.

Former principal’s actions threatens Swinford school’s future
T
HE ‘future viability’ of Scoil Muire agus Padraig Secondary School in Swinford remains a doubt after the school’s former principal left them with a €239,000 debt. John Gallagher of Cloonfinane, Swinford was fined €15,000 after he pleaded guilty to three counts of deception where he defrauded the State to the sum of €340,816. The former principal of Scoil Muire agus Padraig Secondary School in Swinford admitted inflating the number of pupils in the school when applying for a school meals scheme. Mr Gallagher applied for the scheme from 2006 and used the excess money to pay for new windows and doors as well as other projects for the school. When the matter was finally detected in 2012, the Department of Social Protection discovered that the school received €340,816 in extra funding and they are currently paying back that figure. As a result of the debt, the school are under financial pressure and there is now growing uncertainty about the school’s future. Garda Charlie O’Malley, who investigated the deception charges, told Judge Rory
McCabe that Dr Marie Griffin, CEO of CEIST - who are the school’s trustees - informed a recent meeting that they have ‘serious concerns about the future viability of the school’. Garda O’Malley told Friday’s sitting of Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court that the school currently owes €239,343 and is paying back approximately €50,000 per year. He explained that the school is continuing to apply for the schools meals scheme and while it gets approval, the school and not the department pays for the meals. Mr Brendan McDonagh, counsel for Mr Gallagher told the court that his client could not explain what ‘madness’ came over him to do what he did and it was all done for the betterment of the school. Mr Gallagher, he said, did not personally benefit from the money and all the money went back into the school. When making the application for 2006, Mr Gallagher inflated the student figures from 464 to 507 and was granted €188,925. The court heard that there was a surplus when the catering company was paid and the money was used for other projects in the school. Garda O’Malley said the money
should only be paid for meals. Mr Gallagher also inflated the pupils numbers for the following two school years and the school received surplus money from the Department. Mr Patrick Reynolds, counsel for the State. accepted that Mr Gallagher did not gain personally from the money and the money was used for the school. Mr McDonagh said the person who committed the crime was not the same person who committed over 40 years of his life to the school and the community. This was a fall from grace for Mr Gallagher and he could not understand how he could be ‘so stupid’ to commit the offence. Mr McDonagh said his client knows he was wrong but everything was done for the right reasons. He said a lifetime of good work is being undone by his actions and the people who will suffer from his actions are the pupils of the school. Mr McDonagh said this was a significant price to pay for a man who gave his life to education. The court heard that Mr Gallagher’s health has suffered as a result and the whole event had caused embarrassment for his family. Mr McDonagh asked Judge McCabe to be lenient in sentencing. Before sentencing Judge McCabe was critical of both the Department and the Board of Management at the ease in which the amount of money was redistributed and they did ‘not seem too bothered’ by it. He said to them the money was just a ‘drop in the ocean’. Judge McCabe said he could not condone what Mr Gallagher did but understood it was done for the right reasons. He said he did not think it would be in the interest of justice to send Mr Gallagher to jail and the fairest way to deal with it was to pay back the taxpayer. For each of the three charges, he fined Mr Gallagher €5,000 and gave him three months to pay.
Long delays and 41% increase in students seeking counselling
Independent Review Into Roscommon Mental Health Services to be published soon
The Union of Students in Ireland is urging Irish colleges to train their staff on mental health awareness to help the 41% increase in students seeking counselling with staff cutbacks resulting in six month waiting lists to see counsellors, according to new research by AHEAD (the Association for Higher Education Access and Disability) and the National Learning Network (NLN), a division of the Rehab Group. USI said the staff cutbacks during years of austerity has had a negative impact on the most vulnerable, including those experiencing mental illness who cannot access services due to waiting lists. “A student in a state of distress being told to wait 183 days until you can get help is insufficient, irresponsible and extremely dangerous.” USI President, Annie Hoey, said. “There are financial strains specifically on students that impacts on their mental health, for example, USI research conducted in October 2015 shows us that 73.1% of students said the high cost of college causes them anxiety or stress, 72% of students are struggling financially to stay in college, and if fees go up, 63% of students said they won’t be able to attend college. This constant worry about financial struggles as well as exam pressures, personal strains and circumstances, can be huge burdens on young people.” A third of young people between the ages of eighteen and twenty five experience mental health difficulties (this age bracket covering students) according to the Mental Health Matters report. There has been an increase in the number of students progressing to higher education (60%), which proportionately includes an increase in the number of students experiencing mental health difficulties. “The rising number of third level students experiencing mental illness has not been levelled with support services.” Hoey said. “Full and part-time college staff being trained in mental health awareness will help as an interim measure to help students experiencing mental illness.”
Minister for Communications Denis Naughten has been informed by the HSE that it expects to be in a position to publish the independent review into the Roscommon mental health services in the coming weeks. The review, which was ordered in part due to serious concerns over the operation of the local mental health services raised publically by Minister Naughten on a number of occasions. The independent external team from Northern Ireland sought submissions from the public last year as part of its review of the quality, safety and governance of mental health services in the county. Minister Naughten made a submission to the Chairman of the Review team and in that said he sought a fully independent review evaluation of both acute and community mental health services in both County Roscommon and County Galway. Minister Naughten also said he was disappointed by the public comments that were made and the statement made by the HSE following a meeting between Mr Tony Canavan of HSE West and local public representatives in Roscommon recently.

Sligo magician for White House trip with Obama's cousin Barack Obama’s Irish cousin eight times removed, Henry Healy – better known as Henry The Eighth – is bound for the United States to witness the final moments of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s battle for the White House. Henry will be accompanied on the trip by a group of friends, including Sligo magician Shane Gillen. Greg O’Donoghue, from Ashbourne, Co Meath; Kayman Power from Mullingar; and Dubliner Seán Early completes the
entourage. Speaking to The Irish Times en route to Dublin Airport Healy said: “I organised the trip with a few friends – there are five of us going. I suggested we headed to Washington for the election “I was able to organise through what contacts I’d left to get us a tour of the White House and Capitol Hill. I didn’t let Barack know we were coming. No, I didn’t text him,” he added. “After Washington we’ll go back to New
York on the night of the election, and we’ll be in the convention centre where Hillary Clinton will either give her victory speech or concession speech,” he said. “Ideally I’m hoping for a Clinton victory. The Clintons are friends of Ireland, and obviously for the stability of world economics you’d hope that Hillary would get in. There is a fear factor surrounding Donald Trump, so hopefully it will be Hillary,” he went on.

Weekend of High Drama in Ballina
Christina McKeogh, Seamus O’Kelly Players, Loughrea, receiving congratulations from Festival Treasurer Gerry Ring, after receiving the Award for Best Director and Play in the Confined Section. The Loughrea group also won the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards in this Section. Also in photo is Geoff O’Keefe (adjudicator). Photo: Corinne Beattie Photography. “IT is hard to believe that this is just the second event organised by the dedicated committee behind this OneAct Drama Festival in Ballina, such has been the level of professionalism we have seen over the past three nights”. These were the words of adjudicator Geoff O’Keefe at the culmination of three exhilarating nights of drama before packed houses at Ballina Arts
Centre last weekend. The audiences, mostly local, who showed their appreciation of the talented actors and quality productions, with standing ovations on occasions, played their part in making the weekend such a resounding success. It signals a bright future for events like this in Ballina Arts Centre, with many participants indicating a desire to perform there
again. The audience also witnessed a fine presentation from members of the local Ballina Dramatic Society in the confined section, fresh from an awardwinning performance in Kiltimagh a week earlier with their play, “Lone Star”, where they achieved the Adjudicator’s Award and Best Actor Award (Rodney O’Donnell). The top Award in the Confined Section went to Seamus O’Kelly Players, Loughrea with their production “The Wooden Pear”, a play which held the audience spellbound for the duration. Loughrea were also recipients of the Best Actor (Padraic Mannion), Best Actress (Nuala McCarthy) and Best Director (Christina McKeogh) Awards. In the Open Section the top accolade went to An Nuadha (Maynooth) with “Breathing Lessons”, written and produced by Martina O’Reilly, who took the Best Director Award in this section. The Best Actress Award also went to Maeve Fitzgibbon Moore (An Nuadha), while Haulbowline Theatre Group’s Owen Gillie took the Best Actor Award in this section. The Special Adjudicator’s Award went to An Nuadha Players. Festival Chairman Eugene Loftus commended his committee for their dedication and support. Clockwork precision was evident throughout and the schedule worked like a dream. He thanked the adjudicator, Geoff O’Keefe and, in particular, the actors, who delighted audiences each night. He also appreciated the generosity of major sponsors Ballina Beverages, Manor House Hotel and others and thanked Tommy Marren and Niamh McGrath for launching and opening the town’s second One-Act Drama Festival, which is part of the ADCI/DII circuit of festivals.

Call to name Sligo street after Stoker BRAM STOKER should be honoured with a Sligo street named after him. Over Halloween period local man Gary Smylie has canvassed his idea on Facebook. The Dublin born creator of ''Dracula'' drew some of his inspiration from real-life events during Sligo's 19th century cholera epidemic. Stoker's
grandmother Matilda Thornley is buried in the graveyard at John Street. She was a Church of Ireland parishioner at St John's Cathedral. Stoker's mother Charlotte witnessed the worst of the 1832 cholera in Sligo where she grew up. Some of her stories to her infant Abraham 'Bram' Stoker may have
inspired images in his world-famed horror classic. A total of 1,500 people died in that local outbreak, some of them buried alive, such was the haste to dispose of Sligo's dead and diseased. Lighted tar barrels, salt and acid were used to try and fumigate Sligo's streets at night during the cholera. A cousin of Stoker may also have been a teenage victim of that cholera epidemic and he, too, is buried in Sligo town. Meanwhile, a different theory is suggested in a new book which is reviewed in the New York Times today, Sunday. Author David Skal suggests that Stoker was a masochist with “a strongly transgender perspective” muffled by the conventions of his age. Skal has been studying Stoker since 1990 and his new 652 page work is titled ''Something in the Blood.'' Stoker, says Skal, was given to hero worship; his life was filled with intense friendships with charismatic men, including the writer Walt Whitman.

Mayo Twin Pharmacists buy business which has been in family for almost 70 years
T
wo pharmacist sisters from Mayo have bought a business from another family of pharmacists which has been in business for almost 70 years. The twins, Ann and Deirdre Butler, bought the two pharmacies from the Higgins family which has premises based on Teeling Street and Market Cross in Sligo town. The Higgins siblings —Ken, Ann Christine and Stella— will retire as pharmacists from the company, which their father established in 1948, and hand over the keys to Ann and Deirdre. However, Ken will remain on as a consultant with the new family owners for the next six months. Ann and Deirdre — both pharmacists, originally from Ballina Co. Mayo — had always wanted to own a pharmacy business together. When the opportunity to buy Higgins pharmacies came up, the sisters were thrilled. “We could not believe it when we discovered such a well-respected family business had come up for sale. It was a perfect fit for us,” says Ann. “We are very proud to continue from a family with such a history here in Sligo and the fact that Ken is remaining on with us is fantastic. We are extremely
grateful to the Higgins family to have been given this opportunity.” Deirdre adds: “We want the pharmacies to remain patient-focussed and we want to emulate the way the Higgins family looks after their customers. It’s ideal that there are two pharmacies as it gives us an opportunity to expand the product base, especially at Market Cross, and introduce some new, exciting lines.” Customers might do a double-take when they are visiting the stores, as Deirdre will be based at Market Cross and identical twin Ann at Teeling Street. It was extremely important to Ken and his sisters that the company would remain family-run, and they are delighted with the new owners. “When looking for a buyer, we didn’t want the business to be bought by a multiple, we wanted it to remain family-run and we wanted the staff to keep their jobs,” says Ken Higgins, who is 30 years in the family business. “We were very happy when we met Ann and Deirdre as they seem so nice and we think they will work well with the current staff. We wish them all the luck in the world.” Deirdre and Ann Butler are the
daughters of Maura and Paddy Butler. When they were younger, the girls were very aware of pharmacy as a career as their mother was a Business Development Manager for United Drug. Ann’s first job as a teenager was in a pharmacy in Ballina, where Deirdre still lives. Both completed a four-year degree in Pharmacy at the University of Brighton and have worked in various local pharmacies before coming together to buy the new business. The girls have two older brothers. Derek is a sergeant in the Gardai, based in Sligo and Stephen is also a pharmaceutical chemist in Abbvie in Sligo. The company would have been 69 years in the Higgins family in January as Chris Higgins, originally from Tubbercurry, opened their first shop on Teeling Street in January 1948, two years after he qualified as a pharmacist. He ran the family business for three decades. “My father is 96 now and saw the business open and closed and his three children being able to retire and have time off. He is totally behind the sale to the new owners and so would my mother, Betty, if she was still alive,” says Ken. The Higgins family grew up on Circular Road in Sligo town and all three children had worked their summers in the pharmacy from when they were young teenagers, with Stella joining the business when she was just 16. All three siblings studied at different colleges to become pharmacists and all eventually joined the family business — a unique story in any business. Their fourth sibling, Valerie studied psychology at UCD and was the only one not to join the family business. The second pharmacy, on Market Cross, was originally Slowey’s Pharmacy and was bought by the family at an auction. It opened under the Higgins name in January 1998 – 50 years exactly after the first pharmacy opened its doors.

Focus on Fermanagh If you’re not cruising on the lakes in Co. Fermanagh or fishing, here’s a selection of other things to visit or things to do.
1. Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest... Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940. 2. Drive near Monea Castle... On the right-hand side, you can see a photo taken near Monea Castle. County Fermanagh is still
overall quite rural and has got quite a lot of forests, green fields and lakes. I thought this view is both nice and representative of this county, despite the grey sky... 3. Visit Enniskillen Town... Enniskillen (from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann meaning "Ceithleann's island") is the County town in County Fermanagh. It is located almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It
has a population of approximately 11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part of the town, crossed by River Erne.
Sales Starts 1st December
20% OFF EVERYTHING Open 6 Days - Mon to Sat
4. Visit the buttermarket of Enniskillen... The buttermarket is an area of Enniskillen, which has been converted into an Irish art and craft centre, specialised in sale and promotion of Irish and European craft products (paintings, sculptures, vases etc.). There you'll also be able to meet local artists. 5. Visit Enniskillen Castle... Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century, it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site now houses 2 museums.

his month has been designated as Mouth Cancer Awareness Month. I recall as a young dental student, more years ago than I care to remember, being given some very sage advice by one of my lecturers. He told me that working as a dentist is mainly about relieving people’s pain and improving their smiles. All very worthwhile things. However, if in my career I spotted just one person’s cancer at an early stage, then I might just save a life. Those words echo in my mind every time I lift a dental mirror and look into a patient’s mouth. It is a sobering subject and the figures on mouth cancer make for sobering reading. The latest available figures date from 2011, and they show that 2% of all cancers occur in and around the mouth. Mouth cancers can affect the lips, tongue, sinus, gum, palate or the back of the throat. Collectively they account for one out of every hundred cancer related deaths. In 2011, 6800 people were diagnosed with cancer in the mouth, that works out at 18 people per day. There were 2100 deaths due to mouth cancers, that’s 6 people every day. The overall survival rate for mouth cancers is approximately 50%. However, early detection of the problem sends that to over 90%. Given that mouth cancers can be very successfully treated in the early stages one might well ask why the survival rate is only 50%. Well, the answer is that many simply aren’t picked up early enough. The people who are best trained and best equipped to detect tumours in the mouth
are dentists. Unfortunately, we’re not exactly the most popular of people to visit. Approximately half of the population only go to their dentist if they are having pain. Furthermore, people can often ignore the early signs that something is wrong in their mouth. Oral cancers are roughly twice as common in men as women and are most common in those over the age of 50. They are very much associated with excessive alcohol consumption and smoking. It goes without saying that preventing a cancer in the first place is much better than treating one. Keeping alcohol intake low and not smoking are key steps. A well balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables also helps to maintain all parts of the body in optimum health. Cancer in the mouth can appear in a number of ways. A mouth ulcer which has been present for more than 3 weeks should always be checked. Similarly, persistent lumps in the mouth, lips, cheek, throat or neck must be investigated. Red or white patches in the mouth also give cause for suspicion. Loosening of teeth and bad breath can also be a sign of a tumour. If an area of the mouth or face becomes numb or if there is persistent unexplained bleeding in the mouth, seek your dentist’s advice. I would stress that all of these symptoms can also have much less sinister causes than cancer. If you have any of these symptoms do not be afraid to talk to your dentist about them. It is much more likely that they are NOT caused by cancer. However, the only way to know for sure is to get it checked out. Even if there is a cancer, picking it up early is crucial. If you have something which is worrying you in your mouth, do yourself a favour and talk to your dentist. It’s probably nothing major, but it might just save your life!

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.
E
nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make
sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing
