ITH the latest employment figures showing a slight drop after months of stagnation the Government may have to consider some “pump-priming” of the economy if it is to glean necessary support before the Spring election. Also, if the latest Geo Directory’s report on house prices is to be taken as a barometer for an “upturn” it may have to look elsewhere to convince voters in the North-west that things are getting better. While the national average house sale price for the year was €217,544 the figure for Mayo was €109,159 - well below the national average. Over a period of one year 1,090 homes were sold . Of these sales 87% were second-hand dwellings. Also, additions to the housing stock for the year were just 0.3% compared with the national average of 0.7%. The situation was much worse in Roscommon, however, where 540 houses were sold with an average price of €82,517. This is particularly disappointing in a county where only 24 new homes were under construction, indicating poor demand for the existing housing stock. While auctioneers would point out there are certain regions well above and below these averages this only adds fuel to the argument that remote regions are suffering population displacement with people moving towards the larger towns. It is also disappointing that prices are so low with so few new-builds taking place. In Sligo the average price was slightly better, at €119,647, with 730 transactions, while in Galway homes reached an average price of €173,539 with sales reaching 2,502. Undoubtedly, prices are much higher in Dublin, for many different reasons. Continued on Page 2

Low house prices point to slow upturn Continued from front page This report, taken in conjunction with the latest CSO figures which show that for the first time in over two years on a month-by-month basis the number of people unemployed (seasonally adjusted) in the State increased, should prompt the
government to take measures to increase disposable incomes to encourage people to spend a little more. The situation may deteriorate further as the peak tourist season comes to a close and the number of part-time employees in this sector decreases. The government will be anxious to prevent
slippage at this stage with the unemployment rate at circa 9.5%, compared with 10.4% a year ago. While the government is also under pressure from the Small and Medium Enterprise group to take measures to boost job creation the imminent raising of the Minimum Wage Rate may stifle the efforts of some
businesses in this category to maintain existing employment levels. The reluctance to spend (by those who have money) might well be a hangover from the recent recession, but the government have to find a formula to lift the veil of austerity and entice people to have confidence to invest in the north-west.
Fear for MSL ETB HQ if new staff not hired The headquarters of the Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB Board located in Castlebar will close by Christmas if additional staff are not hired. That was the warning this
week from the outgoing CEO of the board, a board that replaced three VECs - Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim two years ago. Joe McDonagh told the meeting that staffing levels
to carry out the work across the extended area is critical. He explained that the neighbouring ETB of Galway Roscommon has 35 more staff and called on the Department
of Education to address the situation urgently. Shane Purcell will be replacing Mr McDonagh as the CEO of the Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB board.
Foxford Woollen Mills and Tolan’s Butchers on shortlist for best shops
THE iconic Foxford Woollen Mills has made it to the shortlist of The Irish Times Best Shops in Ireland. Along with Jarlath Tolan’s Butchers of Crossmolina, it was selected from a huge entry by 31,000 businesses for the coveted award, which will be announced in next Saturday’s edition of The Irish Times. Nominated by the public, this countrywide search seeks to find the best of Ireland’s retailers as voted by their customers. Orna Mulcahy, Editor of The
Irish Times Saturday Magazine commented about the competition: “Once again this year we were overwhelmed by the response from readers with over 31,000 nominations for shops all over Ireland. Some wrote just a line of praise, others sent pages! We read about talented shopkeepers, great merchandise, fantastic service, brilliant cooking and where to get the best coffee and tea up and down the land. “Once again, we were struck by the importance placed on
customer care in the comments. People love to be greeted and for their custom to be appreciated and that hasn’t changed since we started the competition in 2012. Good times and bad, it
is customer relations that count.” Now in its fourth year, The Irish Times Best Shops awards ‘recognises the important part shops play in the community – both rural and urban’.
Mayo true grit in Croker...and Australia! ON the sporting front it’s been an exciting weekend for the county of Mayo. Many thousands travelled to Croke Park and others watched at home as the Gaelic football team provided a heroic Lazarus-like last ten minutes to carve out a welldeserved draw with a fancied Dublin side. Almost at the same time a mother-of-two from Bangor-Erris, wearing Irish colours, but representing Australia, gave an incredible performance at the World Championships in Beijing. While Cillian O’Connor was the toast of Mayo at home after an impeccable exhibition of place-kicking following an illdisciplined Dublin performance, many people from West Mayo were looking
Sinead Diver
towards Beijing and 38-year-old Mayo native Sinead Diver, who finished 21st in the women’s marathon at the World Championships, but representing Australia. She finished in a time of 2.36:38. According to coach Tim Crosbie, “She said to me: ‘I’m running for two countries today, it doesn’t matter what uniform I have on.’’’ “Her fingernails were painted green, white and gold. It was pulling at her heartstrings (to represent Australia) because her heritage is Irish”. Sinead, who celebrated her performance by cheering for Mayo in the All-Ireland football semi-final on Sunday night, hopes her performance will now put her as one of the leading candidates for the Australian Olympic team next year. She was ranked third fastest female marathon runner in Australia last year, won the national half marathon championships in 2012 and came second in the 2012 and 2014 national cross country races – a truly remarkable scenario since the Erris girl took up competitive running just four years ago. Her father, Eddie, is a retired civil servant, originally from Donegal’s Gaoth Dóbhair, who represented the Erris Inshore Fishermen’s Association in tough negotiations with Shell over the laying of the Corrib gas offshore pipeline. Speaking earlier this year he said: “Climbing cliffs in Erris and a bit of swimming were Sinead’s favoured pursuits as a child. He also admitted he and his wife, Bridie, have been “over the moon and back again, several times” since her selection for Australia had

Cillian O’Connor been confirmed. Sinead played basketball and studied physical education in the University of Limerick but opted for a career in information technology. She emigrated to Australia thirteen years ago where she lives with her husband, Colin, and two, Eddie “Beag” (5) and Dara (1). If Sinead was living in her native BangorErris now, and seeking a ticket for Saturday evening’s replay against Dublin, she would probably be disappointed as the excitement has reached fever-pitch for what promises to be another sell-out encounter. Undoubtedly, all western counties are supporting Mayo to reaching another AllIreland final.

‘Mohill Magic’ pony scoops top sale price of €13,000 A showjumping pony from Mohill had everybody talking last week when it was sold for €13,000 at the Cavan Horse Sales at Cavan Equestrian Centre. Named Mohill Magic, the eight year old dark brown mare is a Grade B Pony with 146 showjumping points. The owner was S. Mulligan from Mohill. Last year the pony qualified for Allianz Starfinder 6 and 7 Year Old and it also qualified to represent Ireland in CSI - YP 6 and 7 Year Old European Championship for ponies. Mohill Magic has been jumping with the same rider for the last four years since she was a 4 year old and a video accompanied the catalogue entry showing off the pony’s fine jumping skills. The international sale attracted a lot of sellers and buyers. The average price of show jumping ponies was around the €1,000 mark, so this particular sale caught a lot of attention. Other horses from Co. Leitrim were also sold for impressive prices.

Five sets of twins start school in same class MANY schools across the west reopened their doors after the summer break last week –and for one set of teachers in central Mayo, it was definitely going to take a little longer to get to know the names of all of their first-year pupils. Remarkably, the first-year class in Balla Secondary School had five sets of twins on its roll book. The picture here shows all five sets of twins outside the school on their first day in secondary education. The five sets of twins are Ellie and Harry Mulkerrin Connor, Alan and Conor Brennan, Abbey and Shauna Eagleton, Ellie and Anita Mahon and Lauren and Nathan McGurrin. The teachers in Balla Secondary School obviously won’t have any problems telling Ellie and Harry or Lauren and Nathan apart, but it may take them some time to figure out which of the other three sets of twins they are putting questions to

forthcoming General Election. I outlined what had happened over the last number of years within the party in relation to Denis’ position,” he said. The South Roscommon TD was expelled from the party following his decision to vote
against the government on the closure of Roscommon A&E. “I relayed the importance of having a TD in the Mid-South area of Roscommon, and that I thought it would be important to have a TD in this area going forward, and following on from that, that I’d be supporting Denis in the forthcoming General Election,” he said. Cllr Naughten sent the letter in early August and confirmed that he had received no communication from Fine Gael party headquarters on this issue. He would not be drawn on suggestions that he may lose the party whip. “At this point in time I have nothing further to add,” he said. A spokesperson for the party said the local Fine Gael organisation in the county was aware of Cllr Naughten’s letter. “This is an internal matter for the party and will be discussed in due course”

French-Ballina Festival Weekend T On Sunday, the weather was not favourable either but those who ventured to Walsh Street and the Jackie Clarke Collection building enjoyed the best of French and Irish food and witnessed a feast of music, song, storytelling and dancing, courtesy of the Bofield Ceili Band and other fine musicians. A wonderful weekend in Ballina.

HE Ballina-French Festival which took place over last week-end (concluding on Sunday) was a fine celebration of the town’s cultural and historical connections with France – through film, music, theatre and food. The weekend was boosted by the presence of Christine Rodier, Mayoress of Ballina’s twin town Athis-Mons, who, with a delegation, attended the weekend’s activities. They were afforded a welcoming ceremony in the Green Park, Killala Road, on Saturday, 22nd August, organised by the Comrades of the Great War. Then there was the re-enactment of the unveiling of the Maid of Erin monument by Miss Maud Gonne in 1898. This was erected to the memory of General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert and his French and Irish soldiers, who took part in the Insurrection of 1798. Later on Saturday hundreds of brave souls endured the inclement weather and enjoyed the Night under the Stars at Ballina’s old Military Barracks. With headline act Sharon Shannon and the cast of Beyond the Barricades giving another impeccable performance. On stage, also, were visiting Breton musicians.

O
ne of the entertainment events of the year is coming to The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton for one night only. Internationally revered and nationally treasured, Tom Hickey is one of Ireland’s most decorated actors, and the revival of his acclaimed role in Tom MacIntyre’s The Gallant John Joe, will bring the collaborative work of these two theatrical giants to you. The Gallant John-Joe is the
soliloquy of a Cavan widower grappling with physical and mental infirmity. What keeps him on his feet is his capacity to tell stories, to make a story of anything that moves, using language as a crutch, ointment, talisman, intoxicant. In his stories he introduces us to the characters in his life: Bossman, his well-to-do patronising friend, The Hitmatist; The Chinee; JohnJoe O'Reilly, captain of the conquering Cavan team of the
late 1940's, and Jacinta, his teenage daughter. His melodic ramblings are both instantly recognisable and marvellously strange. John-Joe may be broken, indomitable, silent, noisy and articulate, but stories, they say, only happen to those who are able to tell them. The Hickey/ MacIntyre collaborations are a celebrated part of Irish theatrical history. Tom MacIntyre is one of Ireland’s most daring and
excitingly original Irish writers. His work - whatever the genre - is marked by a willingness to experiment formally, focusing consistently on the rigours, excitement and elusive magic of the journey. In the creak of the door between our mundane world and "the other side" lies the note that haunts him. Tom Hickey’s work is extensive, creating leading roles in new Irish drama written by the foremost Irish playwrights including Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Marina Carr, Frank McGuinness, and as actor, collaborator and director with Tom MacIntyre. His films include: My Left Foot, Cal, Fools of Fortune, Circle of Friends, Butcher Boy and Ken Loach's Raining Stones. This is a truly special theatrical event, and a rare chance to see one of the country’s best-loved actors in a searingly brilliant piece of theatre. This production has been supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and is working in collaboration with the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland to help raise awareness about the condition, visit www.parkinsons.ie. The Date: Friday 11th September Show starts 8:30pm Doors & Bar open 8pm Early booking advised Tickets can be booked www.theglenscentre.com (071) 98 55 833

Cllr Kenny said, “It is not acceptable that local community, voluntary and charity groups are expected to foot the bill for policing services at events and festivals. I understand the policy of charging for Garda security was introduced in 2005, citing major rock concerts and other events which generate huge revenue for promoters as examples, but not rural town festivals. The Gardaí received a total of €4.7 million in 2014 for policing all sorts of events including sporting events and community festivals. “The intention of the Sinn Féin Bill is to provide that clear assurance and we look forward to the support of all the TD’s representing rural Ireland, when it comes before the Dáil,” concluded Cllr Kenny.

understanding of the real pressure rural towns are experiencing as most struggle to survive and hold out hope that a festival might bring a short boost. “Sinn Féin supports the work of these community groups and will seek to protect them from these exorbitant charges by bringing forward legislation to amend Section 30 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 to exclude local community festivals and events from being subject to such charges.” Cllr Kenny pointed out that, “These committees are made up of hardworking volunteers who plan and organise events and festivals to benefit local communities and businesses. These groups often have to fundraise to make such events happen and to require them to pay for the work of the Gardaí on top of this is unfair. Charity events, shows and annual parish festivals are the lifeblood of rural communities. Such events encourage tourism and contribute to community spirit. “It is vital that these events are supported by Government, as opposed to being made pay for the

recommendation that a Rural Innovation and Development Fund should be developed to support “innovative, small scale pilot initiatives that explore the diverse range of potential identified through the CEDRA process”. Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine provided for the setting up of this fund in his 2015 budget allocation and, commenting on the ACORNS programme, he says: “I am delighted that this initiative is getting underway. Job creation is a huge focus for this Government and I hope that by targeting female entrepreneurs, who are currently under represented in start–up enterprises, that we can increase the level of business and employment generation in rural areas” Minister of State for Rural Affairs, Ann Phelan TD, who is responsible for the implementation of the CEDRA Report, says that this CEDRA initiative aims to encourage a stronger level of enterprise development in rural areas and adds “Rural women’s entrepreneurship clearly represents an untapped potential and can contribute significantly to our economic growth. For many rural women, entrepreneurship is part of a broader livelihood strategy, often undertaken initially on a part-time basis. Emerging businesses need support to flourish. I am a strong believer in the value of mentors and in the importance being able to turn to experienced and trusted advisors from a variety of industries for advice and support”.

Working with the team of volunteer Lead Entrepreneurs and with the support of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and CEDRA, I am convinced that we can harness that potential for the good of the individuals concerned, their local communities and the wider economy.” A report from the Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA) contained a

Deadline for applications is Friday 11 September Applications are being sought for a new fully funded programme aimed at providing early stage Sligo based, female entrepreneurs with the knowledge, support and networking opportunities to advance the development of their businesses. Entitled ACORNS Accelerating the Creation Of Rural Nascent Start-ups - the programme is focused on unleashing the potential of female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland who have recently started a business or who have taken concrete steps towards setting up a business. ACORNS is dedicated to seeking out and assisting up to 50 start-up female entrepreneurs living in rural areas such as Sligo, as defined by CEDRA – the Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas. These are all areas of the country outside the administrative city boundaries of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. As ACORNS is fully funded under the CEDRA 2015 Rural Innovation and Development Fund through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, there is no charge for successful participants. To qualify for consideration, Sligo based entrepreneurs must
have recently set up a new business (no earlier than the 9th of July 2013), which they either own or part-own. Those who are not already trading must be actively planning a new venture and have a clear idea of what they want to achieve. If they are not already trading, activities such as organising the start-up team, looking for equipment / facilities, saving money for the start-up or writing the business plan would all be considered as active commitments to starting a business. There is no restriction on the sector in which the new business is focused. However, the selection process is competitive. The deadline for applications from interested candidates is Friday 11 September and the pilot programme will begin on the 30th September, at the ACORNS residential Development Forum in Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The ACORNS initiative will consist of interactive round table sessions that are facilitated by other female entrepreneurs who have started and successfully grown businesses in rural Ireland and believe in the philosophy of entrepreneurs supporting entrepreneurs. New SpaceLiner plane will fly from London to Sydney in 90 minutes P assengers could travel from London to Sydney in just 90 minutes in a new hypersonic plane which reaches 20 times the speed of sound. It sounds like travellers on the SpaceLiner will have to hang on – the two-stage machine blasts
up to 50 miles up using hydrogen-oxygen rocket. It then ‘glides’ through the upper atmosphere at up to 20 times the speed of sound. The SpaceLiner could take off by 2030 – although the team behind it admit they need to
find the small matter of $33 billion first. Martin Sippel, head of the Spaceliner project at DLR’s Space Launcher Systems Analysis Group, said, ‘We have several hundred million passengers traveling
intercontinental distances each year and we think space should have a tiny portion of that. ‘Even if the share will only be 0.2%, from a space perspective that’s a potentially huge impact.’
What flying on the Spaceliner will be like Boarding the SpaceLiner would be very different from boarding a normal flight – the machine will sit upright on the launch pad, like a space vehicle. At launch, rocket boosters will carry the plane up to 50 miles above the Earth, using hydrogen-oxygen engines. The two parts will then separate – just like America’s Space Shuttle – with the rocket booster returning to Earth autonomously. The passenger section – with room for up to 100 people, according to current plans – will then glide through the upper edge of the atmosphere, reaching speeds of 4.3 miles per second. At landing, it will glide in much like a normal plane.
Woman decides it’s cheaper to live in a train than a flat small backpack – filled with clothes, college papers, a tablet computer and a sanitary bag. And while Leonie is living on the train for most of the time, she’ll often stay at the home of her boyfriend, mother, or grandmother – when the train rolls into their town. Normally, we would have to have a long-distance relationship, but living on a train enables me to see him all the time’, Muller told TV station SWR about her boyfriend. She added: ‘I read, I write, I look out of the window and I meet nice people all the time. There’s always something to do on trains.’ And it seems there’s an academic side to the whole thing, too – with Muller planning to record the whole experience for her final undergraduate assignment.
R
enting an overpriced property? You might sympathise with this woman. Leonie Muller has decided to start living on a train in Germany, after a dispute with her landlord prompted her to move out. Now, the college student has
bought a $380 subscription that means she can board every train in the country at no cost – and make the most of the facilities on offer. She’s able to wash her hair in the train bathroom and even pens her university essays while travelling across the country, and described her digs as ‘like being on vacation all the
time’. Describing her initial decision to leave her flat, Leonie told the Washington Post: ‘I instantly decided I didn’t want to live there anymore – and then I realised: Actually, I didn’t want to live anywhere anymore.’ Nearly all of her worldly belongings are fitted into a
Woman told she can’t take £120 bottle of Remy Martin on plane so necks it instead
A woman is reported to have necked a £120 bottle of Remy Martin after she was told she couldn’t take it on a flight. The Chinese woman, named only as Zhao, was then told she was too drunk to fly so wasn’t allowed on the plane at Beijing National Airport. She collapsed moments later as a result of being rather intoxicated, according to the South China Morning Post. A police source told the Bejing Times: ‘She was so drunk she couldn’t even stand up herself. We took her to a room in a wheelchair so she could rest.’
Someone has started a petition to class feminism as a ‘terrorist group Do you think feminism is akin to terrorism? Well now you can sign a petition confirming your belief. That’s right, a petition has been started on Change.org which asks the Government (it doesn’t specify which one) to class feminism as a terrorist group – despite the fact that it is a movement, not a group. The petition’s error-laden description claims feminism ‘has constantly attacked men and women for choosing to live their lives the way they want to’. It goes on: ‘Its (sic) time we stopped the violence, its (sic) time we put a stop to the hatred feminists are constantly generating. Its (sic) time we stopped womens (sic) studies courses from brainwashing women into thinking they are victims. Its (sic) time these misandric loonatics are stopped.’ The petition appears to have been started by a woman called Janet Wilkinson, however this may be a fake name as Janet (who has a particularly non-Spanish sounding name) claims to be from Spain. Amazingly the petition is well on its way to achieving its goal of 7,500 signatures, with 5,300 already putting their names to it. Samuel Black, from Borås, Sweden, gave his reasons for signing: ‘Feminism is a hate movement, and if they can try to classify human rights activists as terrorists than it’s only fair to do the same to them.’ We don’t think feminists will be worrying too much though, as the petition has just been met with mild humour and simple dismissal online.

Home is where the hearth is W
e live in a world of ever growing energy-awareness. Increasing home heating costs driven by fluctuating fuel prices mean we must try to use energy as efficiently and sustainably as possible, without compromising the comfort of our homes, workplaces and public buildings. The aim of this leaflet is to give
householders an informative guide to the various home heating systems available, and their relative merits. Perhaps you want to improve the efficiency of your existing heating system? Or maybe you wish to learn about the most up to date home heating technologies? If so, this booklet will give you clear, concise guidance on how to create warmth
and comfort in your home, in ways that will help the environment and your pocket.
Wrap up well Before examining your heating system, it is important to review how well your house is insulated. For example, fitting draught excluders around windows and doors, where no draught protection
is in place, can cut heat loss by as much as 20% in winter. Investing in high-grade insulation does more than cut down on heat loss. It also means that once your home is heated to the required temperature, it is easier for your heating system to maintain this temperature, so it uses less energy. Insulating your home can give long term benefits through reduced running costs. Capital investment in your heating system will also be reduced, as a smaller, more efficient heating unit will be required. For further information on how to effectively seal your home consult SEAI’s Guide to Insulating Your Home. Fuel – choose the sustainable option There are a number of factors to consider when selecting the type of fuel for your home. For example, availability, storage and cost all have to be taken into account. But
just as important are the environmental impacts your choice of fuel will have. Most of the energy we use in Ireland comes from fossil fuels - oil, coal, peat and gas. These are not renewable – once they are gone, they cannot be replenished. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This is a major contributor to climate change. The sustainable alternative to fossil fuels is renewable energy and this will never be exhausted. Renewable energy is available to us in many forms. Heat – meet your annual heat demand The total amount of heat required for a dwelling is called its Annual Heat Demand. This is a factor of: The Annual Heat Demand for a house will determine the required power output of the heat generator to be installed. It can be met from two main types of heating systems.

Elegant, sophisticated and timeless — just a light dusting of our most precious metal will transform any space. Soak up in style in a highly polished brass tub. A clover leaf table keeps toiletries to hand, while the mirrored storage unit only adds to the glamour and sparkle. Scatter a shower of gold foil over the floor - just because you can...
A super-stylish bathroom with separate tub and shower combines rough concrete walls and a feminine crystal chandelier. Concrete doesn’t have to look industrial. It can really come into its own in a bathroom, as it forms a single, seamless surface. The stool adds a splash of wake-me-up pink.
This beautiful bathroom merges vintage and ethnic styles that would bring warmth to even the coolest of bathrooms. If you've collected heaps of tokens and trinkets from your travels, line them up on a shelf to create an interesting display.
Who doesn't dream of having a fireplace in that bathroom? The black and white colour scheme of this en-suite bathroom gives the space a touch of old-school Hollywood glamour. Pull up a chair, layer it with your favourite cushions and throws, and put your feet up.
This compact cloakroom may be short on space, but it's big on style. This luxurious room has deep blue mosaic tiles, which sparkle like stars in the night sky, and twin basins, with mirrored cabinets that reflect light in the room.
This bathroom has been given a calming atmosphere by saturating it in deep blue and adding classic white to beautiful effect. If you're looking for luxury, then give your scheme a Midas touch. This gilded angel statuette gives the space a majestical aura.
If you love a bit of glamour in your life, then look no further than this dazzling design. Sixties decadence is channeled through masculine graphic patterns in deep glossy teal. White classical furnishings pop against the dark background. If this is too daring, consider papering just one wall.
The black wall helps the bath to really stand out in this modern bathroom scheme. Its slightly battered surface catches the light, creating a dappled glow. A selection of quirky pieces of artwork sit nicely against a black backdrop, in which they truly shine.

A beautiful wildlife pond will attract a whole host of beneficial animals, birds and insects. Make one with sloping sides, to allow easy access for creatures to come and go, and leafy edges that offer habitat and cover.
1
Mark Out the Pond Using a hose, mark out the pond with sweeping curves for a natural effect. Calculate the area of liner you will need by adding twice the total depth (D), plus 18 inches extra, to the length (L). Then add twice the depth (D), plus 18 inches extra, to the width (W), and multiply the two answers (see also Step 2 below): (2xD + 18in + L) x (2xD + 18in. + W).
Level It's essential that the top edges of the pond are level all the way round, or water will drain out unevenly. Place a level on a straight plank of wood and test the level in six or seven different places, building up or removing soil as necessary.
3
Fill With Water Fold the liner in neat pleats over the shelf and top edges, and check that it's bedded into the bottom of the pond. Top up with more water, which will force the liner against the shelf and sides.
6 9
Dig Down Dig out the whole area of the pond to a depth of 18 inches, and angle the sides so that they slope slightly. Leave a 12to 18-inch-wide shelf around the sides at this depth. Then dig out a central area 3 feet deep, and an adjacent area, about 30 inches deep, creating two deeper areas to keep plants and wildlife frostfree in winter.
4
7
Place the Stones When positioning the stones, make sure that they don't overhang the edge by more than 2 inches. This will prevent them from tipping up and both you and the stones falling into the water when you walk on the edge.
Finish Off Place rocks in the water but protect the liner from damage by placing them on cushions of folded plastic sacks or spare rolled-up liner. Ensure the rocks are stable, but don't mortar them in. The pond is now ready to plant. Use the shelves around the sides for marginal plants, and the deeper areas for submerged aquatics, such as water lilies.
10
ed: Materials Need Hose Shovel od Long length of wo Level nd Old carpet or po underlay Butyl pond liner Sharp knife Large stones Mortar Trowel Pond plants Aquatic soil Pond baskets Gravel
2 Line the Base Smooth the edges, and remove large or sharp stones from the sides and base. Line the pond with old carpet or a special pond underlay. Do not use sand because it falls away from the sides and will fill up the hole
Trim to Fit As you fill the pond, move around so that the liner is pulled evenly into the hole. When the pond is full, trim the liner with a sharp knife, leaving up to 18 inches excess around the edges.
5
8
Line With Butyl Center the liner over the hole and push it down in the middle, allowing pleats to form against the sides and base. Fill the deepest part with water; the weight will pull the liner into place.
Edge With Turf or Stones You can lay sod up to the edges, leaving 10 inches of excess liner and butting the sod pieces up to it. Or add stones by mortaring them onto the liner, making sure no cement falls in the water in the process.
Tip: Choosing Pond Plants There are four main types of pond plants — deep-water aquatics, oxygenators, marginals and bog plants. Water lilies are deep-water aquatics and sit on the bottom of the pond, although some will grow in shallow water. Check the depth required on the label (measured from the pot surface) and raise them up on bricks as required. Oxygenators are essential plants that help keep the water clear. Marginals, such as the marsh marigold, prefer the shallows around the edge of the pond, and will be happiest on the shelf. Site bog plants in the damp area around the pond — not in the water.

Sort your Tupperware.Double-check that there's a lid for every container, get rid of loners, and stack them by size to clear up room in your cabinets. Hang your coats. Did the weather recently change? Gather up all the outerwear you haven't worn lately — and won't wear again — and hang them out-of-sight in a closet. Rearrange your coffee table. Tuck rarelyused remotes away in a drawer, bring out your classiest coffee table books, and corral the rest of the clutter in a pretty tray. Declutter your desk. Put pens back in their holders, toss unneeded paper, and straighten up messy stacks of books or Post-Its. Create a home for a collection. Do you have an excess of candles or water

Add hooks.Whether you use them for purses or scarves or for hanging cords, hooks are a huge organizational help. They don't have to be permanent — try using Command Strips for damage-free hanging. Reduce paper clutter. Lingering paper can make even the most organized house look messy. Sort or throw away any receipts, old letters, bills, or leftover paper sitting around your home. Develop a clutter collection system. If you find clutter building up in any particular room, set up a system to help corral the mess. For instance, if you tend to leave out blankets, put out a large basket to throw them in before heading to bed. Corral your jewelry. Hang it, stick it in a box, or arrange it in a tray: Whatever you

All you need to know about Renewable Energy and transfers heat to the water circulating in the systems primary circuit. Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors; consequently they take up less space. They are, however, more expensive that flat plate. Generally speaking, to produce a given amount of hot water, Whether using flat plate or evaporated tubes, the installation costs will be roughly the same.
Solar Water Heating Heating water is the second largest energy use in typical households. Solar water heaters can be a costeffective way to generate hot water for your home here in Ireland. One square metre of Solar Panels on your roof receives the equivalent of more than 100 litres of oil in free solar energy per year. And as a matter of fact, this is more than in Paris. Ok. But what if the sun is not shining? No problem. A solar water heater not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast. True, there will be less solar heat available during the winter, but a back-up heater will boost the water temperature. The result is 100% comfort at all times, with plenty of hot water for a fraction of the cost. Our panels have been fully tested and come with a 10 year Guarantee and are approved for the SEI Greeener Homes Scheme, which means that you can qualify for a grant of € 300 per m2(to max. 12 m2 ) How Solar water Heating Systems work Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which have circulating pumps and controls, and passive, which don't. Solar water heating systems include two main items. They are Storage Tanks and Solar collectors.
Types of Solar water Heating Systems There are two types of solar water heating systems: • Active, which have circulating pumps and controls, • Passive, which don't. Most solar water heaters require a well-insulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank. Solar Collectors There are two main forms of solar collectors or panels on the market here in Ireland Flat Plate collectors and Evacuated Tube collectors. The main component of ach is the absorber, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat. In a plate collector, the absorber is in the form of a flat, black plate in a shallow metal container covered with one or more layers of transparent glass or plastic; either air or a liquid is circulated through the cavity of the container. Heat is directly transferred from the absorber to the circulating liquid (air, water) The absorber in an Evacuated tube collector consists of a relatively narrow strip of copper with a selective black coating bonded to a single copper tube. The tube contains a special fluid which evaporates when heated. This vapour rises
Rainwater Harvesting Rainwater Harvesting Systems In Ireland, daily water consumption rate per person is 148 litres. However, only 67 litres of this is used for personal hygiene and nutritional consumption. This means that approximately 80 litres of water per person on a daily basis do not need to be high quality but while using water from the utility for all your daily water requirements you are paying the same amount of money for each litre of water. The water you are using for washing your car, watering the plants and toilet flushing is treated to the drinking water quality. It is possible to use rainwater harvesting systems for such needs. They are widely used in homes, farms, public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and hotels and many other facilities. How do they harvest water? Its early versions were simply gathering the rainwater in a tank. Today, our rain harvesting systems are much more improved and efficient with the addition of a couple of elements, such as pressure vessels, pumps and filters. A typical rainwater harvesting system has the following elements: • A surface to catch water, this is generally found on your roof • Channels for water transport from catch surface to the storage tank • Filters to filter particles • Pumps and pressure vessels to pressurise water and keep water pressurised. • Water storage tank to store ready-to-use water. • Piping system to transport water to the points of consumption. What will be your savings? This is dependent on many factors. The most important one is, which part Ireland you live in. This is important to know the annual rain figures for that area. Also the surface you will use for catching the water plays an important role in the calculations. When some average values are taken, you can save about €1 for each square meter of your horizontal water catch surface annually. Rainwater harvesting systems pay for themselves in a short time,
generally a few years. Installation and Maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems Rainwater harvesting system design and installation needs experience and training. Systems are designed to occupy minimum space especially in your garden. For this purpose, underground tanks are used. The pipe system is connected to the intended points of use. Pressurizing and pressure maintaining elements in the
systems allow you to have constant water pressure in your rainwater pipe system. Rainwater harvesting system elements are made of durable materials and have a simple technical structure. These two features result in minimum maintenance requirements for the overall system. You may only need to clean filters from time to time and maybe some infrequent maintenance may be required for pumps.

Did you know your home's design can affect your bank account and love life? Try these feng shui tips based on the ancient art of balancing energy. Attracting Money: Don't Use Water Symbols "Drippy faucets are a sign of money going to waste," Karen says. "Whatever the state of your water, your finances mirror those." To increase your bank account, repair broken fountains and remove all stagnant water from your property. "Ever heard the expression, 'I just can't get my head above water'?" Karen asks. It's best not to display water-based artwork or mirrors higher than your nose, which carries the same significance in feng shui. For most of us, that means no mirrors or water scenes above the bed.
Attracting Money: Make Your Front Door Inviting If it's hard to find your front door or it's confusing as to how to get in, it'll be hard for opportunity to make its way into your life as well, explains Karen. Put in an archway or gate to denote the front door if you need to, and make sure the doorbell works. The welcome mat should be bright and fresh. Sweep the steps and sidewalk in front, and add a potted plant to the entryway. Karen's rule of thumb: "If a trick-ortreater can't tell where to go, your front door isn't clear enough.
Attracting Money: Lose Clutter, Add Plants and Water "To bring in more prosperity, it's important to create a vibrant, healthy, inspiring and clutter-free home," explains Laura. "Clutter jams up good energy and leads to procrastination. Bring in vibrant life forces such as plants and flowers, and don't forget to have fresh air circulating. Fountains are important wealth adjustments in feng shui because they stimulate prosperity and energy, and symbolize money."
Attracting Love: Create a Cozy Master Bedroom Oversized master bedrooms need to be cozier in order to have good relationship feng shui. Start by closing off any adjoining rooms, including a bathroom, office, patio or gym, suggests Karen. If there's no door, install curtains. If you have a sitting area, arrange the chairs toward each other, and downsize with a smaller bed — go from king to queen or queen to double. "When the space gets bigger and bigger, people tend to live further and further apart emotionally."
Attracting Money: Decorate in Red, Purple or Green "Color has a powerful impact on mood, and red is considered auspicious and powerful. Think of walking the red carpet or wearing a red power tie," explains Laura. Purple and green are also key colors for attracting prosperity but there's a hitch. "If you really can't stand the color green, it won't work for you. But if you do love purple, paint a wall lavender or add a violet throw to your couch. Then tune in to how your space feels. It's not just filling your home with stuff — it's about decorating with mindfulness and enhancing the vibration and power of your own home.
Attracting Money: Keep the Kitchen Clean "Your kitchen is directly related to your ability to attract money," says feng shui consultant Suzanne Metzger. Keep your pantry and refrigerator organized and full of fresh food you actually use. To attract more money, keep the stove clean — every burner must work and be used equally. Lastly, remove all clutter from the kitchen table.
Attracting Money: Bring In New Opportunities Sometimes it doesn't take money to make money — just a yard sale. "This is a zero-cost fix," explains Karen. "Take out clutter to increase prosperity; what you don't use, don't love, don't need. Space equals opportunity."
Attracting Love: Add a Splash of Pink Because it's the color of relationships in feng shui, pink is one of the best colors to decorate a bedroom with, says Ken. Pink represents love, joy, happiness and romance. It doesn't need to be a whole room, even a splash will do. Alternatively, light blue is a positive relationship color. Attracting Love: Focus On One Another When it comes to the master bedroom, it's not about the view or TV, explains Karen. "The bedroom is about passion and rejuvenation." To increase intimacy in your home, install heavy, cozy drapes over large windows, remove the TV and never sleep with a laptop, iPhone or other electronics buzzing near your bed. The bedroom should be low-tech and romantic. Avoid pictures and decor featuring anyone other than the people sleeping there — wedding pictures work, but family photos don't.
Attracting Love: Arrange Dining Table in a Circle When it comes to creating more love, the dining room is the second most important space in a home, the master bedroom being the most important. Arrange the dining table so everyone can see each other, and set out enough chairs for everyone even if the family doesn't eat together every night, says Karen. Symbolically, it's important to include the whole group.
Attracting Money: Add More Fun If your bedroom is too neat or stuck with a sterile feel, "add something whimsical that makes you smile," suggests Suzanne. It could also be artwork or a photo of a couple laughing together. This can bring positive energy into the room, and in turn, improve the relationship.
Attracting Love: Put Furniture Legs on Rugs "Never put all your furniture against the walls," says Karen Rauch Carter, feng shui consultant and author of Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life. "Furniture should be arranged to support communication, so forget where the walls are. Put at least the front legs of all furniture on the rug — not just around it — and people will sit there and talk."
Attracting Love: Add Doubles to Every Room "If you want to start a relationship, don't surround yourself with single imagery", says Laura Benko, feng shui and holistic design expert. "Avoid a single chair in the corner, solitary images in artwork and solo photographs. It's important to create the energy of partnership around you, otherwise you are continually enforcing singularity." Add a second chair to a sitting area, double up on nightstands and surround yourself with pairs of everything.
Attracting Love: Add Happy Family Photos To improve your marriage, display smiling photos of yourself as a couple and your family in the hallways, kitchen or other high-traffic areas, suggests feng shui consultant Ken Lauher. Avoid putting family photos in the master bedroom, which should only include photos of the couple. Attracting Love: Remove Negative Symbolism "To decrease stress and arguing in your home, check your surroundings," Laura suggests. "One couple that fought constantly had crisscross swords over their bed, and another couple had guns on their living room wall. Keep photos and artwork pleasing, inspiring and uplifting."
Attracting Love: Leave Room for Someone Else "Single people build rooms for single people," says Karen. "They have one chair, one nightstand and so on. Add another nightstand for your future someone." That goes for the closet too. "Don't fill it up with your stuff — honor the space and carve out a dresser drawer or a shelf that's not yours. You don't need to literally have enough room for two people to live there, just leave room for opportunity."
Attracting Love: Arrange Kids' Beds for Better Harmony "Feng shui applies to all the occupants in the house," explains Laura. "Children can be even more susceptible to their surrounding energies, so it's very important to make sure their beds are placed in the commanding position. They will feel easily startled and vulnerable if their backs are to the door." Laura also says electronics should never be stored or charged near a child's bed.

Choosing the Right Kitchen for Your home
T
he kitchen is the work horse of the home and these days needs to be so much more than a place for cooking, chilling, freezing and laundry. Of all the rooms in the home it can be the most expensive to design, refit and decorate because it requires appliances as well as furniture - at the very least a cooker, fridge-freezer, oven and hob and washing machine. And because the kitchen is multifunctional, it is also the room that takes the most planning and leg work. To achieve a dream kitchen, one that is not only functional and practical, but beautiful too, requires research, budgeting and oodles of design inspiration... Decide on your kitchen layout and appliances Unless you are lucky enough to be building your own house or planning a new kitchen extension, your kitchen layout will be decided for the most part by the dimensions of your room; the smaller the space, the fewer your choices of kitchen
layout. Smaller houses and flats with kitchenette-style areas built off single living/dining rooms tend to house galley, L-shaped or Ushaped kitchens. But designing a dream kitchen can be easiest and least expensive in smaller spaces like this. There is no agonising over which appliances will go where as there tends to be little choice. And that is the joy of the small kitchen: it virtually designs itself. Another is that a small kitchen allows you to use quality materials that would be too expensive in a larger space. Once you have decided on the position of your fridge-freezer, sink, washing machine, cooker, hob, dishwasher and microwave you can give the remaining space over to wall and base unit storage. You’ll also need to spend time researching appliances to find the models that work for you – freestanding or built-in oven; electric, gas, induction or domino hob; washing machine or washerdryer/tumble dryer? In larger spaces you will have the
luxury of thinking about a kitchen beyond the basic functions of cooking, chilling, freezing and washing. You may be able to design a fully open-plan space that opens out to the garden and across your ground floor, incorporating dining, lounging, TV watching and entertaining and homeworking or study – in short, a fully multifunctional family space. In larger homes it might even be possible to remove some basic kitchen functions to other rooms by creating a separate larder, laundry or utility room. Plan your kitchen storage There is, let’s face it, an awful lot of stuff to store in a kitchen: food, drink, tableware and cutlery, glassware, pots and pans, utensils, cookware, linens, small appliances such as food mixers and blenders, cleaning and laundry products, refuse and recycling bins - all manner of paraphernalia. If you are budgeting for a small space you are likely, therefore, to want to squeeze in as many units as possible. Remember that drawer units offer more storage capacity than cupboards, always fit the insides of doors with wire shelving for storing smaller items such as medicines or herb and spices, and make use of carousel mechanisms in corner units. Free up cupboards by keeping oftenused items that won’t gather dust, such as plates and bowls, on open shelving and by using hooks to hang up pans from wall or ceiling racks. Make sure everything
you are storing away is organised and easy to access. Regularly spend time sorting through cupboards and drawers – the better organised your bits and bobs are, the less space they will take up. A larger kitchen space allows you to consider additional features such as kitchen islands and peninsula units, butcher’s blocks, glazed wall units, more extensive open shelving, larder units or kitchen dressers. Or the ultimate luxury in kitchen designing – deciding to leave a space empty. As you plan your storage, factor in your lighting too, so you will always have directed, functional lighting over worktops as well as gentler mood lighting elsewhere. Choose your kitchen style, materials and colours Our choice of kitchen style, colour and materials can be very personal, but, alongside budget, will be influenced by the type of home we live in (country cottage, Victorian or
Georgian townhouse, modern flat, 1930s semi). Think about what would best suit your own home. This isn’t necessarily an interior design style that reflects the period of your house, but can be a conscious decision to do something very different – many owners of period properties choose no-holdsbarred modern kitchens. Most people will go for one of three broad styles: traditional, modern or country and most kitchen manufacturers design their ranges of kitchen cabinetry accordingly. Within each of these core styles there are, of course, all sorts of permutations to make decisions around – fitted, freestanding, Shaker, rustic, painted, hi-gloss, retro. However as kitchens are expensive rooms to fit, remember that whatever style you choose needs to last far longer than the looks you might choose for other rooms in the house. Go for a broader look, rather than something that might be
considered a narrower, more passing interiors trend. For example, rather than the recent trends for monochrome, black or colourful designs, there may be more kitchen mileage in classic looks such as white, wood finish, and the traditional muted paint shades of blue, green or grey. Whatever style you choose, it will inform the materials you use throughout the kitchen. If you go for a country-style kitchen chances are you will have painted units, a ceramic butler sink, oak worktops, stone or brick flooring, a butcher’s block and range cooker. Essentials for a modern kitchen would probably include handle-less gloss units, stainless-steel sink and appliances, composite worktops and marble flooring. So the style you choose will, to a large extent, determine the choices you make around the colours and materials that will constitute your dream kitchen.

Decorating Kid’s Rooms
F
How do I decorate a kids bedroom? When designing a child's room, think about color, color and more color. Incorporate a favorite hue on the walls or bring in bright accents, but stick with neutral furniture that doesn't need to be swapped out as interests change. While the furniture should be appropriate for your child's age, it also should be something that can grow with him or her. Get full-sized dressers and cabinets that can last through the school years, and consider a bunk bed, which is great to share with siblings. As they get older and no longer want to share a room, you can add a desk underneath the top bunk. With so many toys and clothes, storage is key. Add built-ins if you can, but cubbies and shelves are also great for those on a budget.
or a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's a spot to do schoolwork, play games, rough-house, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile toys. As you plan out your child's bedroom, you'll need a space that serves all those functions — and is comfortable and practical for several years to come. The ultimate experts on what kids like best are kids themselves, so get them involved in the design process by letting them help with selections. That being said, children's preferences change often, so use accessories and colors that be easily replaced. Overall, whether you're decorating a playroom, bedroom or nursery, be sure to think about fun, growth and practicality. How do I decorate a playroom? A playroom should be very lively and inspirational, so get creative with your color and furnishings. A wall mural or wall decal is a great way to incorporate playful design, while a chalkboard wall lets kids produce their own masterpiece. Try using fun furnishings, like beanbag chairs or floor cushions, and if you want to splurge, add in unique elements like a climbing wall, slide or swing. Because it is a multifunctional

This sweet, galleried play area designed by Trine Miller, has the dual function of creating an adventurous play space, while also keeping toys contained and out of view
Think creatively when it comes to arranging furniture, especially in a shared children's room. Beds don't have to be side by side
room, use space smartly. Install built-in cabinets and shelves for much-needed toy storage, and include a desk or work table for homework and coloring. A craft station is a great way to get those creative juices
flowing, or consider a small snack area with microwave and mini fridge. Divide the space into zones so that quieter kids can draw or read while louder, more active kids can watch tv or play a musical instrument.
How do I decorate a nursery? In the younger years, safety is crucial. Review the literature on all surfaces and products, and get up to date on product recalls before you make major purchases. Once you've done your homework, it's time to start buying. Of course, a crib and changing table are key purchases, while a rocking chair, baby swing and extra dresser are helpful additions. Be careful with adding too much furniture though; you want to be sure to leave some floor space for your young one to learn to crawl and walk. When it comes to color, don't feel the need to go with just standard pink and blue. Yellow, brown and green are all great gender neutral palette choices and will make your nursery stand out from others.

Forget matching furniture
Here are the 5 hottest home design trends for 2015
I
f you're looking to decorate your home with some Ikea basics — stop right now. Matching furniture and solid paints wall colors are apparently "soon-tobe forgotten" interior decorating fads, according to the interior design experts. And you wouldn't want your house to look completely untrendy, now would you? But good news! The experts have also kindly announced the five new interior decorating trends that will take 2015 by storm. "Unexpected textures and an eclectic, modern vibe are about to find their way in 2015. Expect to see a more sophisticated look in 2015 that incorporates gold hardware, natural textures, and a subtle mid-century modern undertone," writes Kerrie Kelly, design expert. So what are these so-called "sophisticated" trends of 2015? Lets take a look. 1. Gold Fixtures "In 2015, homeowners will no longer be limited to silver or stainless steel fixtures, and will feel free to mix and match finish colors, or go bold with all gold. So that means you can bling out your house exactly as you've always dreamed of doing in the new year. We think you should start with the bathroom — no sink is complete without a gold faucet.
And since it's officially on-trend to mix finishes, you may want to consider a bronze-and-gold gryphon lamp fixture for your living room. If you're not quite sure exactly how to go with the whole gold design thing, you can take a cue from St. Petersburg's Hermitage. They really nailed the trend in the boudoir room.
everyone's dying to spice up their wall game. So say good-bye to those plain white walls in lieu of some bold light-blue mixed with yellow: Or maybe even a deep purple and white flower combination: But if you're looking for something a tad more demure, perhaps something like this limegreen option is your best bet.
2. Cowhide Without a doubt, there is nothing more "sophisticated" than the cowhide rug. Your apartment or house certainly won't be complete without one. “Cowhide is the ideal accent texture for 2015’s modern, yet approachable design aesthetic. Designers say elements of cowhide will fight their pay into pillows, rugs, throw blankets, and even artwork this year. Just imagine how nice it would be to have a few guests over for a glass of wine in this living room:Or perhaps you would rather keep the cowhide all to yourself? You can also get a few cowhide pillows, and even a cowhide throw to add "the ideal accent texture" that's also an "approachable design."
4. Blue Accent Colors Blue will be the most popular accent color for interior decorating, and — believe it or not — it also happens to be the perfect complement to Marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, according to the designers. "Pops of indigo blue or deep navy will become a stable in home design this year, as their deep natural hues become extra vibrant against warm earth tones like Marsala," according to home design expert, Kerrie Kelly. If you're not sure how you feel about the navy-accent trend, a pillow like this is a great way to dip your toes in. 5. Modern/Mid-century Modern elements. Last but not least, a throwback to modern design elements of the 1950s through the 1970s. So that couch you saw on that 1970s familystyle sitcom is officially trendy today. However, "while this trend will be popular, experts advise homeowners to be careful when integrating into homes, as the trend is great for inspiration, but shouldn't take over the house." Consequently, we think these are the best subtle ways to bring the 1970s to life in your home. First and foremost, a nice mustard and wood chair:Or maybe this orange and printed combo chair — just the right accent to punch up your room a bit And if you want just a touch of mid-century sparkle, a funky mirror is the way to go.So throw out that out-of-date matching furniture, and get ride of your solid painted wall colors. It's time to bring one of these sophisticated, completely ontrend design staples to your home in the new year.
3. Wallpaper "Wallpaper is coming back in a big way” According to the experts, consumers should expect to see an increase in available colors and textures in home stores because

charts, has become one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. Together, their performances have been praised for leaving audiences spellbound. Come and hear why. One of the greatest and most recognised literary figures of the 20th Century, James Joyce might never have achieved worldwide fame had it not been for an Englishman with a troubled conscience. Set in 1914, it opens with London publisher Grant Richards determined to re-read Joyce’s

manuscript for “Dubliners” eight years after first rejecting it. As the streets of Dublin and the racy, comic tales of Joyce’s childhood and young adult world spring to vivid life around him, Richards relives his frustrating correspondence with the petulant Irish writer. He turned down the book once over worries it might breach obscenity laws, along with fourteen other publishers at the time. Should Richards be the one to risk everything now, second time around, and launch this volatile but brilliant genius on a world about to descend into the madness of war? Tel: 094 9023733 and online booking at www.thelinenhall.com DYNAMIC DANCE AT THE LINENHALL Montreal dance company Zogma present an intoxicating and exhilarating blend of Quebecois and Irish music and dance in the show “Sokalo - Atlantic Rhythms”, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday 9th September at 8.00pm. Zogma invites you on a rhythmic journey through the streets of their city by bringing the intoxicating
music and urban energy of their production “Solako” to the rural landscapes of the west of Ireland. Produced by The Dock and Zogma Dance in Carrick-on-Shannon as part of its 10 year anniversary celebrations, “Sokalo - Atlantic Rhythms” represents the happiness of reuniting and the joy of shared memories with friends. It is the urban rhythms that modulate to life. To take this journey with you, Zogma will be collaborating with Irish dancers Caitlin Nic Gabhainn, Edwina Guckian and Liam Scanlon and virtuoso harpist Laoise Kelly. Each of these celebrated performers has a unique style of their own fashioned out of the music, dance, people and landscapes in which they grew and indeed continue to grow in. When the urban rhythms in “Sokalo” meet and intermingle with the rural rhythms of traditional dance and music in Ireland we expect a magical result. Join us on the journey inspired by the living traditions of Ireland and Quebec. An enthralling night in prospect. TOP TRAD AT THE LINENHALL Kathleen MacInnes, Dermot Byrne, Brian Finnegan and Mike Vass: a mouth-watering prospect as four Irish and Scottish traditional music trailblazers join tgheir considerable forces for a dazzling Music Network concert at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday 14th September at 8.00pm. Award-winning Hebridean singer Kathleen MacInnes is a natural live performer with a soulful, earthy voice that lingers long after the last note has been sung. Best known for his work with Altan, legendary box player Dermot Byrne has collaborated with everyone from The Chieftains and Sharon Shannon to The Stunning and Stephane Grappelli. Founder member of ground-breaking acts Flook and Kan, flute and whistle player Brian Finnegan has also performed with artists such as Cara Dillon, Kate Rusby and Russian group Aquarium, while Scottish guitar and fiddle maestro Mike Vass, a recipient of the prestigious ‘Composer of the Year’ at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards, has toured extensively with leading Scots band Malinky. A real musical treat in store. COMEDY THEATRE: BEEZNEEZ AT THE LINENHALL The ever-popular Beezneez theatre company returns to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar with John McDwyer’s comedy “Turning Mammy” on Tuesday 15th September at 8.00pm. Beezneez Director and playwright John McDwyer describes his new play as “a comedy with a few serious bits”. Sisters Martha and Mary live together on the family farm. Mary is involved in a long term search for her baby which was adopted at birth while Martha is
involved in a long term wait for neighbour, Ambrose’s Mammy to die so that she can finally marry the love of her life. That’s as simple as it gets, however, as we discover dysfunctional people with deep secrets and passions. Beezneez Artistic Director and author John McDwyer directs Eileen Murphy, Valerie Traynor and Peadar Conway in a play with as many laugh out loud set-ups as moments of melancholic sadness. Another entertaining night out from popular Linenhall regulars Beezneez. Beezneez theatre presents “Turning Mammy” at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Tuesday 15th September at 8.00pm. Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733 and online booking at www.thelinenhall.com The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible. CONOR O’GRADY EXHIBITION AT THE LINENHALL “Green Carnations” is the inaugural solo exhibition of visual artist and Castlebar native Conor O’ Grady. The exhibition, on show at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar from 28th August to 10th October, is the culmination of several years’ visual investigation into the reality of living within certain minority groups, and focuses in particular, on the experiences of marginalised homosexual males within contemporary Irish society. The exhibition uses traditional art approaches to re-present the contemporaneous experiences of Irish gay people, focusing particularly on those most at risk of experiencing societal, political and emotional oppression. Conor explains, “The recent passing of the Same-Sex-Marriage Referendum will have an overwhelming positive effect on the lives of homosexual people in Ireland. A space of physical and emotional freedom has been created which cannot be undone. However for those men and women who will remain marginalised within society, for whatever reason, the outcome of the referendum will have little effect at all.” “Green Carnations” focuses in particular on “the relationship between gay men and specific public spaces, and tries to unify these disparate spaces within the context of the gallery, using specific images which evoke risk, isolation and fear of disclosure.” The exhibition uses the existence of these experiences as a precursor, and to provide physicality to wider problems within contemporary Irish society. The title of the exhibition is a reference to Oscar Wilde and acknowledges a shared history which exists within Irish and homosexual literature, visual and political culture, with particular reference to French philosopher and social theorist Michel Foucault.

THE Best foods for healthy eyes Eat fatty fish at least once a week? The right kinds of fruits and vegetables? Find out how to lower your risk of serious vision loss from advanced age-related macular degeneration.
T
he health benefits of oily fish have been widely reported including reduced risk for heart disease, depression and certain kinds of cancers. Eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids has also long been thought to be good for maintaining eye health. Now new research from Johns Hopkins University backs up previous studies showing that fatty fish-eaters tend to have lower rates of advanced agerelated macular degeneration (AMD) — a condition where vision becomes increasingly blurry and distorted due to damage to part of retina. This can impair basic daily activities such as reading, driving or even recognizing faces. While there is no cure for AMD, there are some treatments and lifestyle changes that can help to prevent serious vision loss. The study, published in the journal Ophthalmology, indicates
that omega-3 fatty acids — found in oily fish such as salmon, albacore tuna and mackerel — may affect the development or progression of AMD. Researchers looked at data from 2,520 adults aged 65 to 84 who underwent eye exams and completed detailed dietary questionnaires. And while they found no clear relationship between participants’ reported fish intake and the risk of AMD, there was a link between higher intake of omega-3-rich fish and the odds of having advanced AMD, the most serious stage of the condition. In fact, participants who ate one or more servings of such fish on a weekly basis were 60 per cent less likely to have advanced AMD than those who averaged less than a serving per week. However, the relationship between participant’s fish intake and the
risk of AMD — as opposed to advanced AMD — was less clear. The study took into account known risk factors such as gender, race and smoking habits, which have been previously connected with AMD. (Women face a greater risk of AMD than men, whites are at greater risk than African Americans and smokers face a higher risk than non-smokers.) “While the current research indicates that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of late AMD in some patients, more research is still necessary,” study leader Bonnielin K. Swenor from Johns Hopkins University told Reuters. The fact that the study was “cross-sectional” — meaning it analyzed participants at one point in time rather than following them over time – means that its difficult to know for sure if the participants’ reported diet habits preceded the development of the eye disease. Foods for healthy eyes In addition to fatty fish, there is growing evidence that fresh fruits and dark green, leafy vegetables — foods rich in vitamins C and E, selenium, and carotenoids (including beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) — may delay or reduce the severity of AMD To reap the most health benefits, select the freshest, most colourful veggies and fruits you can find — think red, dark green, orange or yellow. Some top foods for your peepers include carrots, corn, kiwi, pumpkin, yellow squash, red grapes, tomatoes,
spinach, kale, collard greens and green peas. Nuts are another source of omega3 fatty acids — and they also contain copper, which it thought to play a role in preventing agerelated eye diseases. Foods to avoid A high-fat, high-cholesterol diet is not only bad for your heart, but it can lead to fatty plaque deposits in the macular vessels — which can hamper blood flow and increase the risk of AMD. Similar to guidelines for cardiovascular health, experts recommend maintaining a diet low in fat to keep your eyes healthy. Research has also shown that consuming red meat 10 times a week or more puts you at a 47 per cent higher risk for macular degeneration. Vitamins and supplements A high-dose formulation of antioxidants and zinc can significantly reduce the risk of advanced AMD and its associated vision loss, according to The National Eye Institute’s AgeRelated Eye Disease Study (AREDS). This is often recommended for people with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes.Because there can be harmful side

Other preventative measures Experts also recommend making other healthy lifestyle choices to help prevent AMD: • Smoking. If you smoke, quit. Studies have shown that people who smoke may be 3-4 times more likely to have AMD. • Exercise. Not only can physical activity reduce risk for AMD, but it may also slow progression of the disease. • Watch your numbers. This includes controlling your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. • Adequate protection. Protect your eyes and be sure to wear sunglasses, especially in strong sunlight.
