LIGO has the highest rate for empty commercial premises in Ireland and other western counties are not too far behind. These are the findings of a survey which provides up-to-date data on the stock of commercial properties in Ireland, commissioned by GeoDirectory from DKM Economic Consultants. In this, the first quarterly report on the vacant commercial building stock in Ireland, the highest vacancy rate was recorded in Sligo at 15.1%, with Leitrim in second place at 14%. It is feared the numbers are still rising, particularly in Sligo town and Carrick-onShannon. In Sligo’s case the rate has increased by 1.1 percentage points from last August. While the average for the country now stands at 11.4% all the western counties and Donegal have above average vacancy rates with Galway (13%) and Mayo, Roscommon and Donegal each with 12%. Only Dublin, Carlow, Limerick and Laois share the top third of the table with the six western counties. Kerry lies at the bottom of the table at 9% . Evidence of the rise in the number of empty premises can be clearly seen in the Tesco Arcade or Castle Street, Sligo, Arran Street, Ballina, Main Street, Castlebar, in addition to many vacant shops in smaller towns. The impact of the recession, in addition to an increase in online shopping, is taking its toll on the business community in the west. We can only speculate on the effect the household charge and further cuts in spending may have on the number of properties lying idle. The stock of vacant commercial properties in the country stands at 25,432 (out of a total stock of 223,451). This represents an increase of 1,598 since August 2012. Dublin now has 6,202 empty commercial premises compared with 5,581 in August 2012.

SALES EXECUTIVE Public Talk on history of Eyre Square Wanted

T

he Mayo Association Galway will host a public talk on the history of Eyre Square on Thursday, April 4, in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill. The talk will be given by Killala-native Brendan McGowan, development officer at Galway City Museum. Brendan is the author of a new publication – Eyre Square 300: Aspects of its History – which charts the history and development of the Square from its origins as a medieval green outside the city walls to the present, with a particular focus on its monuments, past and present.

He has previously published books on the Leeds Irish community, which has strong ties to the west of Ireland and particularly North Mayo. Brendan can well claim to be an authority on Galway writer Pádraic Ó Conaire. In 2012, he completed his second MA degree, which focused on Albert Power’s iconic limestone monument to Sean Phádraic. His knowledge of Eyre Square is wide and is not confined to the statue, which is now housed in Galway City Museum. Brendan is a native of Killala and was recently welcomed as the newest

member to the Mayo Association in Galway. His illustrated talk on the history of Eyre Square is open to the general public, with Mayo and Galway people alike invited to come along to the Galway Bay Hotel on Thursday at 9pm. For further information, contact PJ King, PRO Mayo Association Galway on 087 2204350. The Mayo Association Galway was founded in 1971 and has a longstanding tradition and history of supporting worthwhile schemes or projects in Mayo and Galway. The association is fully committed to participating in all aspects of community life in Galway and has seen a dramatic increase in interest and membership following the recent annual dinner dance in February. In keeping with previous years, there will be a number of social activities and functions planned for the year ahead including golf outings, a business lunch, table quizzes and a boat trip on the River Corrib. The Association meet at 9pm on the first Thursday of every month in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill. New members are always welcome to come along and join the association.

Collette Sheerin – Album launch of “Making Grace” IF the definition of the word Grace is “a characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm or refinement” then Collette Sheerin’s latest offering to the world of music entitled “Making Grace” certainly does what it says on the tin! The album is a beautifully crackin’ collection of ten original songs and given her passion for lyric and poetry, it is perfectly packaged to show case her song writing skills and composition of music. Her voice has been described as “expressive, musical, distinctive and full of charm”. Most notably known as a flautist, Collette has been a prominent part of the Sligo music scene for many years since moving here from her native County Offaly. In recent years, however she has also been a regular collaborator with Sligo world music geniuses “No Crows”, she has performed at the knock out hugely successful Source theme nights and

also in 2011 Collette formed her own folk/rock outfit “The Candles”. Being surrounded by such talent, inspiration and generosity it was only natural that these musicians would lend themselves to augment each and every song on the album. Those musicians being Leslie Jones & Willie Kelly (Rackhouse Pilfer), Anna Houston, Steve Wickham, Eddie Lee & Ray Coen (No Crows), Seamie O’Dowd, Kieran Quinn (Anything Goes), Brian McDonagh (Dervish), Hugh Feely and also featuring Eoin Troy and Dean Gurrie on backing vocals. “Making Grace” was recorded and engineered by Brian McDonagh at the Magic Room studio. Folks this is a gig you won’t want to miss and a definite date for your diary - the official launch of the album "Making Grace" will be happening on Friday the 10th of May at 8 o’clock in The Model Arts Centre. Admission is five euro (including special offer on cd ; ).

Sadness in Mayo at passing of local businessman CLAREMORRIS and its surrounds was in mourning last week following the passing of one of its best known and respected businessmen, Martin O’Brien. A true gentleman, Martin died peacefully on Thursday last at University College Hospital, Galway, after a short illness. Thousands attended at the weekend to pay final respects to the businessman, family man and community leader who was just 50. He was particularly known for his community spirit and gave his time selflessly to projects like the Swimming Club, Town Hall and Racecourse Committees. He was also past

president of Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, following in the footsteps of his late father, Paddy, and carried out the role with distinction. Martin was one of the best-known figures in the motor industry in the west. O’Briens Garage on Dalton Street was established by Paddy O’Brien in 1956 and Martin joined him in 1981. Later, as the business developed and prospered, a new dealership branch was opened in Ballina, run by Martin’s brother, Pat. Martin was a devoted family man and his passing has robbed family and community of a great leader and a true Chris O’Dowd gentleman.

Among the thousands attending his funeral at the weekend were relatives, friends and colleagues from the business community who travelled from all over Ireland and abroad to pay their respects. Following Funeral Mass in the parish church, Claremorris, he was laid to rest in St. Colman’s Cemetery on Sunday. Martin was pre-deceased by his parents, Paddy and Sadie. He is mourned by his devoted wife, Kathy, loving daughters Sarah, Kate and Lisa, loving brother Pat and sisters Mary and Lily and extended family. He will be sorely missed by vast numbers of people in the local community. May his kind soul rest in peace.

Internal HSE row denies patient access to specialist service

A FRESH row has erupted over access by Mayo patients to specialist health services. THE operation of the HSE West’s arterial assist machine to patients in the county has run into trouble due to a disagreement between different units of the HSE in regard to its funding. Ballina based Fianna Fail TD, Deputy Dara Calleary has highlighted the issue and said: “ The machine increases arterial blood flow to the leg and 550 patients in Ireland currently use it. None of these patients are from Mayo because of the dispute. “ To rent one of these machines for 90 days costs €1,200 and it can save a

leg from amputation. It is for people with severe vascular conditions in their legs who, if their condition deteriorated, might need to have the leg amputated, with all of the associated social, personal and financial costs. “There are 127 patients on a waiting list and an arterial assist machine for those 127 patients would cost less than half the cost of seven amputations. “In University College Hospital Galway, I could be in the room next to the Minister for Health. But because I am from Mayo I would not get the machine, while someone who lives five miles up the road in Sligo would get it. “It is ridiculous. I do not know if it is a funding issue but heads must be knocked together to make this service available to the patients of Mayo as well as in Galway and Roscommon.” Deputy Calleary was supported in his stand by Roscommon Deputy Denis Naughten. He said: “It is frustrating that an anomaly exists within the system in Galway, Roscommon and Mayo that means there is no funding while in other parts of the country that is not the case. It is unclear who is responsi-

ble and who should pick up the bill.” Junior Health Minister Alex White said he appreciated the Deputy Calleary’s concerns and has made inquiries concerning this matter. “I have been advised that the provision of arterial assi st pumps in Galway and Roscommon has been discontinued pending the outcome of a review of their efficacy. The national clinical care programmes office has been requested to carry out this review.” Deputy Calleary said he intends to raise the matter at a meeting with HSE West management in Castlebar in the near future. “ There is a ridiculous anomaly that someone a mile inside a county border can get the machine while someone a mile on the other side is in the wrong county and cannot get it. “It is clear the availability of this machine will save money in the short, medium and long term, not just in the Department of Health but also in the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and in local authorities. That silly anomaly must be addressed for the sake of all concerned,” he added.

Concerns over threat to rural schools RURAL schools across the north-west face new challenges following the new value for money report soon to be published by the Department of Education which casts doubt over the future of some of the smaller schools. According to the Sunday Business Post, the report will recommend that primary schools should have four teachers and 80 pupils, in order to balance numbers and quality outcomes. However, a spokesperson for the Department of Education says the report's findings did not mean it would be Government policy to close schools with fewer then four teachers. There are currently 600 two teacher schools in the country. The findings of this report made for timely discussion at the teachers’ conferences over the weekend. More than 800 teachers from across the country attended the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation Conference in Cork. The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) began its conference in Galway on Tuesday and members were due to hear from Minister Quinn on Wednesday. The TUI has already strongly rejected the new public sector agreement.

Roscommon man claims he was shot deliberately by Israelis A Roscommon man has claimed he was shot by an Israeli soldier whilst filming a protest in the West Bank. Tommy Donnellan is well known as an activist for the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign. He travelled to the village of Nabi Saleh last month, where Palestinians stage protests every Friday against Israeli occupation. Donnellan, who was shot in the arm by a rubber-coated steel bullet, was not seriously injured. He says he was hit before but believes that the shooting yesterday was targeted.

Sad day as Keaney’s Bookshop closes

IT certainly is the end of an era. People from Sligo and its hinterland would be familiar with Keaney's Bookshop and its landmark premises on High Street, which ceased trading on Friday. It is a sign of the times and indicative of the evolution which has taken place in publishing but it has brought to an end a business which began over 100 years ago. Keaney's supplied school books, stationery, newspapers and other publications. A small sign in the window announced the closure. Keaney's thanked all their customers down through the years. Three generations of the Keaney family operated the shop since it first opened in the 1800s. One of the oldest bookshops in the country, it was a leading supplier of a wide range of schoolbooks in the north west for many years. For many years Keaney's was the only local supplier of school books. It now joins Keohane's of Castle Street as another independent bookshop operator to close. Keohane's closed in July 2011 after 64 years trading in the heart of Sligo.

‘Erasmus’ Students Scoop IT Sligo Enterprise Prize

Pictured at the final of the IT Sligo Student Enterprise competition are, from left to right, Ann Higgins, Head of Dept of Marketing, Tourism & Sport; Gary Reynolds, IT Sligo lecturer and judge; winning team members Evgeniya Nenenko, Matthias Franchois, Grégoire Marechal and Sebastian Topea; Louise O’Gorman, Innovation Centre Manager and judge; Susan Bourke, Product Launch Method, Sligo; and IT Sligo lecturer Marie Moran.

A

team of international foreign students has beaten off stiff local competition to win the IT Sligo Student Enterprise Competition. The four members, who are studying at the Institute under the EU’s Erasmus international student exchange programme, pipped three other IT Sligo teams in the final held during the recent

Enterprise and Innovation Week. The finalists had to devise solutions to ‘real life’ business scenarios based on a case study, which they were handed on the day, about the operations of an export-oriented Irish-based SME (small to medium enterprise). Without any other prior knowledge of the company, they had just three hours

Massive Increase in Bowel Cancer among men BOWEL cancer rates among men have soared by more than a quarter in the last 35 years, new figures have shown. In contrast, women have experienced a rise of only 6%, according to the report from Cancer Research UK. Increasing rates of bowel cancer may be linked to obesity and diets high in red and processed meat and low in fibre. Another key factor is the increasing age of the population. But why there should be such a stark difference between men and women is still unknown. Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK after lung cancer. Incidence of the disease has climbed from 45 cases per 100,000 men in 1975-77 to 58 cases in 2008-10, a rise of 29%, said the report. Over the same period, rates for women have increased only slightly from 35 to 37 per 100,000. The biggest rise has been seen among people aged in their 60s and 70s, who now account for 23,000 new cases each year. However, bowel cancer survival is improving, with half of all patients living for at least 10 years after being diagnosed. The figures are released to mark bowel cancer awareness month and the launch of a new campaign by the Bobby Moore Fund. Professor Matthew Seymour, from the University of Leeds, who is director of the National Cancer Research Network, said: "We know the risk of bowel cancer increases as we get older and, since we're all living longer, it's no surprise to see that the number of people getting the disease is rising."

to come up with solutions to key questions arising from the study which they then presented to a panel of judges who questioned them closely. The competition was designed to foster a spirit of enterprise among third level students and develop their understanding of business management with a view to cultivating early entrepreneurship. The judges decided that the team, comprising Evgeniya Nenenko (Czech Republic), Matthias Franchois (France), Grégoire Marechal (France) and Sebastian Topea (Romania), came out on top for their ideas on the product and market development challenges and opportunities facing the company, and use of social media for marketing and customer relations. The judges were Louise O’Gorman, Innovation Centre Manager at IT Sligo, Susan Bourke, Product Launch Method, Sligo, and IT Sligo lecturer Gary Reynolds. Congratulating all the finalists, Ms Ann Higgins, Head of Department of Marketing, Tourism and Sport, said: “The competition provided the participants with an invaluable opportunity to put the theory they had learned into practice and to enhance their problem-solving skills. “Dealing with a case study like this, sight unseen, is very demanding and the teams acquitted themselves very well on the night. They rose to the challenge, with each providing a strong defence of their proposals to grow this indigenous SME.”

Gardai step up campaign against under-age drinking

YOUNG people in Roscommon town should be cautious as Roscommon Gardai issued a warning to publicans and parents of teenagers last week that they are stepping up their campaign to tackle underage drinking in pubs in the town. Gardai have visited a number of pubs over the past two weekends at various times to check on patrons and to ensure that they are over eighteen. This will continue as part of the national campaign called “You May Be Asked” where age cards will be requested and checked by Gardai. “We are appealing for parents to ensure that if their children are underage, then they are not permitted to be drinking alcohol, it’s as simple as that. “Parents and publicans should be aware that we will be asking for agecards and ensuring that they are not forged,” outlined Sergeant Ciaran Carroll of Roscommon Garda Station. Gardai are advising young people to ensure they have their age cards on their person and they are advising publicans to ensure that they ask for age cards prior to serving any person they feel may be underage, as it is their responsibility to ensure that alcohol is served only to those aged over eighteen. “There are a lot of reports of underage drinking countrywide and it needs to be tackled. This initiative, launched by Chief Supt Padraig Rhattigan, shows that Gardai are taking the matter very seriously,” concluded Sergeant Carroll.

Jackie Clarke Collection now fully open to the public THE Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina opened permanently to the public on Tuesday last, April 2nd. The priceless collection of historical Irish material will be on show in a new, purpose-designed facility on Pearse Street, allowing the public unprecedented access to 400 years of Irish history. The project, now completed, is the realisation of the lifelong dream of the late Jackie Clarke. Local people know too well how he lovingly and expertly compiled this vast collection of over 100,000 items for the people of his home town and those who visit. It is now regarded as one of the leading collections of Irish historical material in the world. Thanks to the generosity of Clarke’s widow, Ann Clarke, the collection has been permanently housed in Ballina’s former Provincial Bank building. The new exhibition centre is the result of a €5 million project developed by Mayo County Council in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, with the support of the National Spatial Strategy Gateways and Hubs ERDF funding (2002-20). The facility was designed by multi-awardwinning Irish exhibition-design company Martello Media. For the last year, the company has worked closely with the collection’s director, Sinéad McCoole, and a design team. Together, they have interpreted, themed and presented the collection in an accessible manner that will appeal to young and old alike. The Collection is comprised of three elements – the exhibition centre, the repository and the adjoining walled heritage garden. The exhibition space showcases, on an interchangeable basis, the stand-out items in

Jackie’s collection. These items include the original 1916 Proclamation of Independence and the tricolour cockade taken from the hat of Irish hero Wolfe Tone by his captors in 1798, as well as many incredible documents that offer a first-hand account of some of the most significant periods and characters of the last four centuries of Irish history. The artefacts are displayed in a way that allows people to have the same intimate access to them that Jackie himself had, through the use of interactive touchscreens and open storage devices. The Memory Pod is a particularly innovative feature of the exhibition centre, offering visitors the chance to record their own memories and create short digital films. Visitors can also watch audio-visual presentations about Clarke himself and the significance of his collecting. Different rooms throughout the building highlight the various aspects of his collection, including maps, newspapers, prints, posters and Clarke’s library. The adjoining walled heritage garden has been beautifully and sympathetically restored to offer a quiet place where visitors can contemplate Clarke’s collection as well as Ireland’s unique botanical and agricultural heritage. The Jackie Clarke Collection will be officially opened by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at a future date. As of April 2, it will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Admission is free, and school and group tours are welcome. For booking, call 096 73508 or visit www.clarkecollection.ie.

Mayo VEC condemns SUSI as “a fiasco” THEY certainly are not alone but Mayo Vocational Education Committee have joined in condemning the new system used to allocate third level student grants as unacceptable. Councillor Jarlath Munnelly, chairman, said it was unfair that students and their families were forced to wait so long to get their fees paid. He welcomed the independent review being carried out into Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) and hoped the ongoing problems will be rectified before the start of the 2013/14 academic year. According to information furnished to the Oireachtas public accounts committee earlier in March, around one in seven college students who applied to the grant processing body for a third level maintenance grant are still either without payment or a firm decision on whether they are eligible

for a grant. Of the 69,361 students who filed grant documentation to SUSI this year, 9,912 have either been approved for a grant but have yet to receive it, have returned incomplete information, have returned supplementary information on request, or are having a final decision currently processed. A total of 4,176 applicants have returned incomplete applications while a further 3,181 had submitted supplementary documentation after being asked to do so by SUSI. “What really concerned me was that those who did everything right with their application still had to wait too long for payment,” added Councillor Munnelly. Councillor Thérése Ruane said the system is ‘an absolute fiasco’. She knew of a lone parent who dropped out of education because she could not afford to feed her children while awaiting the grant.

Gardai urge clergy to step up security

Fr. Pat O’Brien

F

ollowing the appalling attack on the home of Caherlistrane PP, Fr. Pat O’Brien last week, the clergy in rural County Galway have been asked to step up their own security in the wake of a second attack on a parish priest since the beginning of the year. And the Gardaí have said that they are willing to provide advice on an individual or a group basis to priests when it comes to improving their home security. Fr. O’Brien was attacked in his home by four intruders who tied him up and made off with a paltry amount of money. But now the clergy in general have been advised to take additional steps to secure their parochial houses in the wake of this attack and one which occurred in early January in Fohenagh during which a priest was assaulted. The Gardaí say that there may be a perception within the criminal element that there are large amounts of cash stored in priests’ houses and have urged that better security measures be put in place. Detective Sergeant Mick O’Driscoll of Tuam Garda Station said that traditionally the priests of any parish receive callers on a daily basis but in the wake of these attacks, it was now time to be alert to the

threat of roaming gangs of criminals. He said that priests now had to look at their own security and urged them not to keep large sums of money in their parochial houses in the aftermath of weekend Masses. Detective Sergeant O’Driscoll then confirmed that the Gardaí were following a number of lines of inquiry into the incident during which a gang of raiders ransacked Fr. Pat O’Brien’s house which left him shaken and traumatised. One of the gang members repeatedly called him a paedophile and Fr. O’Brien revealed that he was particularly frightened of this individual. The PP was watching the Ireland v Sweden soccer match on television when he answered a knock to the door on Friday night week last. He had previously been with one of his parishioners whose sister had died. It is understood that the gang are from the Limerick or Cork area and had carried out the raid in the hope of finding money that they could use to pay for drugs. The four men, dressed in balaclavas, forced the door in on top of the priest and then tied him up as they ransacked the house.

58th Reserve at NY St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Commandant Gerry Jordan (left) pictured with Taoiseach Enda Kenny and members of the 58th Reserve in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, last week.

F

OR the fourth year in succession members of the 58th Reserve Infantry Battalion have participated in the world’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York. The Battalion was led by Ballymote (Sligo) native and Ballina resident Commandant Gerry Jordan, who is second in command of the Battalion, a unit of the army reserve headquartered at Finner, with an area of operations covering Counties Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim. Gerry is, perhaps, best known locally as Chairman of the Sonas Group, which operates nursing homes in Enniscrone, Roscommon and Athlone. Over 60 members of the Battalion have participated in the parade at their own expense to date. In doing so they created history of sorts as prior to their debut march in 2010 no Irish defence force militia group had marched in the U.S.

since the funeral of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Gerry was one of the instigators of the Battalion’s New York trip and there are strong ties with the Fighting 69th Regiment of New York because one of its most famous Generals is Michael Corcoran (1927-1963) a native of Carrowkeel, Ballymote, Co. Sligo. The Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, unveiled a monument to General Corcoran in Ballymote on August 22nd, 2006. Underneath the monument is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, donated by the Sligo family of Michael Lynch, who died in the twin towers on September 11, 2001. General Corcoran gained both fame and notoriety when he refused to parade the Regiment for the Prince of Wales in reaction to the British response to the Irish famine. During World War 1 95% of

the men who joined the Regiment were Irish. In acknowledgement of the honour shown by the 58th Reserve Infantry Battalion to Mayor Bloomberg, the St Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration Committee, New York and the 69th Infantry Regiment invited the 58th Bn to take part in the 2010 Parade and they have taken part in each parade since. The significance of the participation in 2010 was reflected in the fact that the 58th Battalion members were all guests of Mayor Bloomberg at City Hall on the day prior to the parade, in 2010. The general welcome that was extended to the 58th Battalion by both the 69th Regiment and the general public on the streets of New York over the years has been quite extraordinary. The Army Reserve has at its disposal a wide range of modern equipment and weaponry. At all levels of the Army Reserve, soldiers are taught to operate as a team to overcome challenges and work effectively. Leadership and teamwork are highly important in the Defence Forces and are required in order for soldiers to operate in the difficult and dangerous conditions in which they can find themselves. As a result, the Army Reserve spends a lot of time and effort developing, what is its most important asset - the individual soldier. The Reserve Defence Force (RDF) is a Volunteer force whose time is given voluntarily to the Defence Forces but also to help local communities. Speaking to North West Express Comdt. Jordan said participating in the New York parades has been one of the highlights of his career in the Reserve Defence Forces. “The fact that members ranging from students to people of my own age paid their own w ay to march in the parade shows the pride they have in wearing the uniform and representing their country abroad.”

Potential for job creation in home care sector According to a new report from Home and Community Care Ireland (HCCI) over 260 jobs could be created in the Sligo/Leitrim area and €2bn saved nationally through reform of the home care sector. The same principle applies to other counties throughout the country. The research shows that €117 million per annum could be saved immediately

through opening up the tendering of home help and home care services in Ireland. A further €256 million per annum could be saved if funds are redirected from the Fair Deal Scheme to more appropriate care provision for low and medium dependency older people in their own homes. The report, The Business Case for the

Outsourcing of Home Care Provision and a More Efficient Use of Fair Deal Funds, compiled by EPS Consulting for HCCI, the representative body of private home care providers in Ireland, outlines the need to address inefficiencies in the elder care model as a matter of urgency. Michael Harty, HCCI Co-Chair, said, “Harnessing the outsourcing opportunity could support the creation of over 260 local jobs in the home care sector in the Sligo/Leitrim area, as more patients will require care and more hours will be able to be delivered within the existing budget. “These are local jobs that will be in every parish and community across the area, providing employment in many areas experiencing serious unemployment issues.” “The Government needs to stop paying lip service and take action to address inefficiencies in the system, through a more open and transparent commissioning system which will help save money, create jobs, and stop the cuts to frontline services enabling thousands of people to be cared for in their own home,” he concluded. It will be interesting to see what the response of Government to this report will be and also the views of those in the nursing home sector.

Cuts bite as VEC schools hit AN indication of the extent of cuts in the pipeline for education was brought home to Martin Fallon, Chief Executive of Leitrim VEC, who said he was “shocked” to get notification of a cut to funding for the general running of vocational schools in the county. Leitrim VEC could see up to 30% cut from their non pay grant which is used for the essential running of schools including utility, heating, school books and maintenance. In a letter from the Department of Education this month, the VEC were told they may have to use “other balances” to pay for the running of their schools. Mr Fallon said he was “awaiting clarification” on the information. Cllr Mary Bohan queried where this other money was to come from, she said it was a “very serious issue.” She said the department may even look into the VEC’s bank account at funds committed to plans but not yet spent. Looking at their figures, Mr Fallon projected they could be cut by at least 29- 30%. The non pay grant has almost been cut by €100,000 each year from 2009. Teacher representative Sean Wynne said the VEC need to ask why other sectors in the public domain are not getting the same treatment.

Superior Insulations saving you money on many fronts

Group pictured at the presentation of a cheque to the Oncology Ward Patient Comfort Fund, Sligo General Hospital, by grandchildren of the late Paddy Murphy. The presentation was made at the bequest of the Murphy family, Cloonkeelane, Castleconnor.

SUPERIOR Insulations are now one of the few insulation contractors in Ireland and the only contractor in the Mayo/Sligo/Roscommon/Leitrim region that can offer clients the opportunity to pay for the cost of their insulation job less the SEAI grant amount. Billy Connolly at the Royal

BILLY Connolly, the greatest stand-up comedian of his generation, brings his ‘The Man Live Tour’ to THE ROYAL THEATRE, Castlebar on Tuesday 30th April. Tickets €54.25 & €49.25. At every good-times gathering of joke-telling friends, invariably there’s always a joke told that belongs to this legend of comedy - a priceless oneliner, or one of his bizarre stories told in a Scottish accent. But no one can do it like ‘The Man Live’: Billy Connolly stand-up comedian, actor, musician, TV presenter and artist. Billy has lived the life and has laughed at every turn. After an apprenticeship as a welder in his hometown of Glasgow, he became a professional performer in 1962, forming ‘The Humblebums’ band with Gerry Rafferty, before pursuing a solo career as a comedian. Connolly found cult success through his stand-up and live comedy albums. He has toured worldwide continuously for the last 50 years, performing to an audience of over 10,000,000, was awarded a CBE in 2003, was given the Freedom of the City of Glasgow in 2010 and received the BAFTA in Scotland Outstanding Contribution to Television and Film Award in 2012, and has established himself as both a sought-after character actor and an accomplished voice

performer. Boy gets 'millions' in app deal

A teenager has sold an app he designed to Yahoo! in a deal believed to be worth tens of millions of pounds. Nick D'Aloisio created the tool at his home in Wimbledon, south-west London, at the age of just 15, and now two years later it has been bought by the internet giant for an undisclosed sum. The app, named Summly, reached number nine in the free iPhone app chart last November and offers users a quick and easy way of finding news stories on the internet. The teenager, who is studying for his Alevels outside of school, is now due to join the capital's Yahoo! team. Nick, 17, said he was "delighted" about the deal. In a message on the Summly website, he wrote: "I am delighted to announce Summly has signed an agreement to be acquired by Yahoo!. "After spending some time on campus, I discovered that Yahoo! has an inspirational goal to make people's daily routines entertaining and meaningful, and mobile will be a central part of that vision. For us, it's the perfect fit. "When I founded Summly at 15, I would have never imagined being in this position so suddenly."

TV 'affects children's behaviour'

F

ive-year-olds who watch more than three hours of television a day are more likely to develop anti-social behaviours than those who do not, research suggests. The 15% of the age group who watch more than three hours of TV a day are at an increased risk of developing anti-social behaviours, such as fighting, stealing or disobedience, a study found. The research, published in Archives of Disease in Childhood, examined more than 11,000 UK children when they were aged five and seven. The children's parents were asked to complete a "strengths and difficulties questionnaire" to describe how well adjusted their children were. They were also asked to report how much time their children spent watching TV and playing computer games at

the age of five. The researchers found that almost two-thirds of five-year-olds watched television between one and three hours a day, 15% watched more than three hours and less than 2% watched no television at all. After taking into account various variables, including parenting and family dynamics, researchers found that watching TV for three or more hours a day led to a small but significant increased risk of anti-social behaviours in children aged five to seven. But spending a lot of time in front of the TV was not linked to other difficulties such as emotional problems or attention issues. The authors, from the University of Glasgow, also found that time spent playing computer games had no impact on behaviour, and they conclude: "This study found that watching television, videos or DVDs for three hours

or more daily was associated with a small increase in conduct problems between the ages of five years and seven years, after allowing for other child and family characteristics, including parenting." But they added: "Our findings do not demonstrate that interventions to reduce screen exposure will improve psychosocial adjustment. Indeed, they suggest that interventions in respect of family and child characteristics, rather than a narrow focus on screen exposure, are more likely to improve outcomes. "However, the study suggests that a cautionary approach to the heavy use of screen entertainment in young children is justifiable in terms of potential effects on mental well being, particularly conduct problems, in addition to effects on physical health and academic progress shown elsewhere." Professor Sonia Livingstone, professor of social psychology at the London School of Economics, added: "If five-year-olds watch more than three hours of television per day, research detects a small but noticeable negative effect on their conduct problems, though no effect on hyperactivity or emotional problems. "So, no cause for panic, but good reason to ask why some children spend so much time watching television - perhaps the pressures on their parents are too great, or perhaps there are no play spaces nearby? Or maybe what matters is how children watch television - research also shows that children benefit the most from opportunities to talk, interact and play - and this can be done in front of the television as well as elsewhere."

Facebook backlash over 'child porn' FACEBOOK has sparked a furious backlash after a graphic video allegedly showing child pornography circulated on the social network. Users vented their anger on rival website Twitter after the footage apparently popped up in personal news feeds and was reportedly shared more than 16,000 times. Those who claim to have seen the film said it showed a young girl being abused by an older man. Comments on Twitter suggested the clip received almost 4,000 "likes" before it was taken down. Facebook said it removed the video, believed to have originated in the US, "quickly" after users reported its disturbing content, but the site continued to draw caustic remarks, even after the footage was deleted. Twitter user Nicholas wrote: "Someone posted child porn on facebook and it's spreading like wildfire." Another social networker said: "Child porn video on Facebook, no wonder I hate that website". Facebook urged users never to share videos of this nature. A spokesman said: "Nothing is more important to Facebook than the safety of the peo-

ple that use our site, and this material has no place on Facebook. "We have zero tolerance for child pornography being uploaded on to Facebook and are extremely aggressive in preventing and removing child exploitative content. We are pleased that this material was reported to us quickly, enabling its swift removal." Every Facebook user who passed on

the video has been warned against sharing explicit films, the site said. It reports each occasion such clips are circulated to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, based in the US. In the UK, Facebook reports all alleged child abuse to the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).

Family boarded up inside Dublin home in council error accept damages

A

n Irish couple have accepted substantial damages after they were accidentally boarded up inside their own home by bungling council officials. Tristan Ua Ceithearnaigh, 46, and his partner, Elisa Udtohan, 25, were awarded €76,000 (£64K) after workers began boarding up their home on Eugene Street, Dublin while they were inside. Large corrugated iron sheets were attached to their front door and window by Dublin council officials as they relaxed at home with their four-month-old baby daughter. The pair said they feared for their lives after hearing banging at the front door before calling police in December 2010. They were asked by the workers if they were squatters, responding that it was a privately rented house. After spotting a council van outside, Mr Ua Ceithearnaigh opened the door to find the men had begun putting the sheets up on the house next door. Dublin City Council denied falsely imprisoning the couple or defaming them by creating the impression they were squatters or being evicted, the Irish Times reports. The couple claim they had to be treated for emotional distress and left the house shortly afterwards the incident before settling the damages claims.

Man realises he has 7.5cm knife lodged in his back three years after he is stabbed Next time you have an unexplained itch on your back check to see if there’s a knife embedded there… One Canadian man didn’t notice he had the sharp instrument lodged in him for more than three years. Billy McNeely reportedly suffered the injury following a fight at an arm wrestling match in April 2010 where he was stabbed five times with a 7.5cm knife. He has subsequently had the instrument removed but when he initially went to the hospital three years ago he was not given an x-ray. He returned with constant discomfort but was merely told he had nerve damage. It wasn’t until recently when he got his nail caught on the top of the blade did his girlfriend notice it. ‘I told Billy: “There’s a knife sticking out of your back”,’ his other half Stephanie Sayine said. ‘I was scared. I was ready to pull it out with tweezers.’ Mr McNeely, from the Northwest Territories, added he used to set off metal detectors when in prison. ‘I’ve done some jail time in the past,’ he said. ‘The guards rub over you with a metal wand detector, and every time it hit my back… it went off.’ Mr McNeely is weighing up whether to sue his local health division.

for slimmer travellers. Dr Bhatta of the Sogn og Fjordane University College in Norway said: ‘As weight and space are far more important in aviation than other modes of transport, airlines should take this into account when pricing their tickets.’ Airline bosses are to consider three variations, including a scheme where airusers would be charged according to their weight along with their luggage. Another option would see passengers paying a base fare plus or minus an extra charge. A third variant would see a standard fare for passengers within 25 per cent above or below a set weight limit, with a discount or surcharge depending on whether they are over or under that span. Dr Bhatta told The Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management he believes third option is most suitable. Journal editor Dr Ian Yeoman said: ‘Every extra kilogram means more expensive jet fuel must be burned, which leads to CO2 emissions and financial cost. Maybe they should be looking to introduce scales at the check-in.’

Beginner's

Guide Renovation

to

part 1

F

orewarned is forearmed, especially when it comes to renovating.

Prepare yourself with lessons learned, expert advice and our best money-saving tips - before you pick up the sledgehammer! 1. Getting started Avoid: Starting the renovation before getting a feel for the house Solutions: Live in a house through as many seasons as possible before you start any major changes - unless the building is about to collapse! Rather than attempting to design your own blueprint, the priorities in the early stages should be a schedule of your needs and wishes, a master plan of how to achieve them and a budget,.A big-picture vision can prevent extra costs on electrical and structural work. Design and decorative elements are equally important. Slowly gather inspiration for your mood board - a batch of pages from magazines, fabric swatches, design postcards and furniture brochures

- to convey your visual passions. 2. Assembling a team Avoid: Hiring a team without comparing prices and personalities Solutions: Cheapest isn't always best when putting together the team - a person's workmanship, commitment, management experience, communication skills and availability should be the major priorities. You'll save in the long-term with someone who can take educated shortcuts, work faster and who will make less errors. A building designer or draftsperson can keep costs down for a simple house extension, but for a new build or an extensive reno, an architect is the ticket. They can advise you on everything from design, planning and managing the budget to designing the interior, landscaping and even checking the builder's invoices. An architect's fees are around 10-15 per cent of the project value. To find a local architect, visit the Institute of Architects' website at www.architec-

ture.ie. They're also experienced in dealing with local councils. Many architects will recommend their regular builders; talk to at least three to compare packages and check references. Rather than just relying on the builder's references, talk to the owners themselves. Prospective trades people need to show home warranty insurance and public liability insurance. Be sure that your trades people are covered for workers' compensation by their employer. 3. Controlling the budget Avoid: Being unprepared for an unexpected budget blow-out Solutions:While an architect can estimate upcoming costs, a quantity surveyor will supply a more detailed price expectation. The break down the building into elements, such as floors and walls, and amend the cost depending on the materials. Keep a log of all products and materials used and changes made - each decision to upgrade adds up and could blow your budget. To help minimise risks, a contingency plan of 10-15 per cent extra budget is imperative. All sorts of things can go wrong - latent conditions get discovered and they usually cost money.. During a major renovation, be prepared for a raft of specialists battering on your front door. These include engineers and building surveyors, and the ever-increasing list of consultants required by local councils, such as sustainability experts. Visit your local council for a full list. Consider the cost of rental fees if you move out during the renovation. Moving out could save you money - and sanity. When the owners move out, the house can be fully gutted and will run on minimal electricity and no hot water. Renting also saves time and money because tradesmen don't have to pack up each day.

4. Getting the timing right Avoid: Thinking that the renovation will run on time and to schedule Solutions: Timing is crucial. "If you haven't ordered a kitchen before November, it probably won't be installed until February. You can be guaranteed that the factory will shut down over Christmas, making the kitchen at least a month late. Builders and architects take time off for holidays throughout the year.Ask them to confirm their vacation plans early on.Another slow down can be the winter season. Builders are entitled to extensions for winter weather during the early stages of the construction. Aim to complete construction before January:The team can keep working on the interiors throughout the bad weather 5. Starting the demolition Avoid: Failing to show the construction plans to your neighbours before lodging the development application Solutions: Consider showing site plans, elevations and shadow diagrams to directly affected neighbours before applying to the council. Loss of privacy and overshadowing are common complaints, so consider the impact your design may have early to speed up the planning approval process. After this hurdle, you, your architect or building designer can lodge the development application with the council before building commences. Patience is a virtue, since councils are notoriously slow, and if complaints are lodged, you may have to attend council meetings. Most councils require a construction certificate for building work to start. Once done, the blissful sounds of jackhammers can begin.

In the bathroom, save money by sourcing taps, the sink & the bath yourself.

6. Keeping costs down Avoid: Project managing a full renovation yourself - it can cost more Solutions: An architect can be commis-

7. Adopting an eco attitude Avoid: Assuming eco-sensitive options are more expensive Solutions: Incorporating green solutions into a design in the early stages may have an initial added cost, but they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. By installing solar panels, you can generate your own electricity, saving money in the long term as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Design your renovation to work with the seasons to regulate temperature, humidity and air flow. Site orientation is critical to take advantage of solar power and cross-ventilation. Insulate and use materials with good thermal mass (those which absorb and release heat slowly, cutting down the need for heating and airconditioning). Work with non-toxic products and avoid over-consumption. Use renewable resources where possible for energy, along with energy-efficient appliances. Collect and store rain water for daily use.

As a back-up, hire an architect on an hourly rate; they understand the specifications, can solve difficult issues with the builder and spot flaws a layperson would never notice. Beginner's

Guide Renovation

to

part 3

A well-executed job is where many elements just ‘settle' - not every piece needs to have the ‘wow factor'. " A piece may not be noticed on its own but it can be intrinsic to the overall design. 8 Stepping Outside Avoid: Failing to budget for landscaping Solutions: Consider the outdoor area from the start and budget accordingly. The first flush of enthusiasm about prospective renovations is all about the interior. Garden landscaping is often forgotten until the renovation is nearly complete, when there are no funds left. Consider the backyard during those first conversations with an architect - it might even be worth hiring a landscape designer. Designate areas in your garden for children and for relaxing or entertaining. Build spaces within the garden that flow to areas that have a destination , it might be a reading area, a place for outdoor dining, or a spot to have a coffee. By designating those spaces and putting something there that people can use, the whole space becomes more inviting." 9 The wow factor Avoid: Splurging on eye-catching pieces that don't work well together Solutions: A well-executed job is where many elements just ‘settle' - not every piece needs to have the ‘wow factor'. "A piece may not be noticed on its own but it can be intrinsic to the overall design. Every decision has an impact when renovating. "If you go with a particular type of tap, the hand rails and showerhead have to work with that. That's where many renovators come unstuck - they like this and they like that but when they see it all together, they realise it doesn't work. An interior designer takes a practical and costeffective approach. They have access to all the latest materials, finishes and furniture designs, They are able to think outside of the box. Finalise hard surface finishes, wall and floor colours, and fittings and fixtures in the planning stages, but consider soft furnishings, furniture and decorative elements towards the end, keeping the big picture in mind. Consider it the fun part after all the hard work! 10 the final stages Avoid: Reaching completion date with trades people still hard at work Solutions: The completion date needs to be finalised when setting up the building contract. It is important to clients that the have a fixed completion date as well as a fixed price. The client is entitled to damages if the builder runs over. There is then a greater incentive for a builder to finish on time." Home warranty insurance is mandatory in some way, but only applies to building projects where the value of the work is above a specified amount. This type of insurance protects the home owner from defective or faulty work where the builder becomes insolvent, dies or disappears. Once work has been completed, an architect or design professional needs to check for defects. If there are faults - if walls are cracking, for example, because of bad workmanship - the builder should rectify any damage. If the builder refuses, you'll need to lodge a complaint. Good builders rely on their reputation, and will be prepared to come back to make any repairs.

insulation in your home

Home Energy Saving Scheme Grants Many Irish houses, particularly those built before 1980, are very wasteful of energy.Various cost-effective energy saving opportunities exist which, through reducing fuel and electricity bills, can pay for themselves in a relatively short time. The implementation of energy conservation measures can also make the house warmer, more comfortable, and eliminate cold draughts and condensation. On a wider scale, conservation can reduce polluting emissions, provide employment, and reduce Ireland’s fuel imports bill. Most of our energy currently comes from oil, coal, natural gas and peat. These resources are finite, and if we continue to use them at current rates, they will run out within a small number of generations. In the meantime, the burning of these fuels releases pollutants into the atmosphere, contributing to smog, acid rain and, in the longer term, climate change. For above reasons the organization Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland has launched a program called Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme funded by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2007-2013 with programmes partly financed by the European Union. It provides grants to homeowners who are interested in improving the energy efficiency of their home in order to reduce energy use and costs as well as greenhouse gas emissions. The scheme is open to all owners of existing houses built before 2006. Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland administers the scheme. The types of measures currently eligible under this scheme are external and internal wall insulation, ceiling level roof insulation, rafter level roof insulation, high efficiency boilers and heating control upgrades. From 8/06/2010 there is a need to do also a compulsory After Upgrade Works Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment when all works will be finished. For this service you can also claim €100 grant. For arranging a BER assesment please contact SEAI Registered BER Assessors. How much are the grants? Grants are fixed for each type of measure as indicated in the table below. Grant approval must be in place before any purchase of materials or commencement of measures undertaken. Grants are paid after the measures are completed and the contractor has been paid by the homeowner. In the instance where the cost of the work (vat inclusive) is less than the fixed grant amount, the actual cost will be reimbursed.

Grant amounts Roof Insulation €200 Cavity wall insulation €250 Internal Wall Dry-Lining €900 External wall insulation €3,600 High Efficiency Gas or Oil fired Boiler with Heating Controls Upgrade €560 Heating Controls Upgrade €400 BER assessment €50 1 Multi-unit apartment blocks will be subject to a different grant allocation. 2 New boiler must have efficiency greater than 90% 3 Minimum requirement for heating controls upgrade is : 2 zones (space and water) with 7 day programmer (time and temperature) control and boiler interlock, time and temperature control of electric immersion heater and either 1 more zone control or 3 TRV’s There is a minimum requirement that the grant amount in the first application must be €500 or greater. For example the BER grant itself cannot form part of this €500 amount. There is talk that these grants will be ceased in early 2014 so it is advisable to apply now so as not to miss out. Who can do the work? In accordance with the scheme's Terms and Conditions, all works must be completed by a contractor from SEAI's Registered List of Contactors available on the SEAI website.

Attic/roof insulation Up to 30% of the heat produced in your home may be escaping through your roof if it is un-insulated. Even if you already have in-

sulation in your roof, you may still be losing heat if it is not up to the level specified in the most recent Building Regulations. You may want to replace it with a higher-performance insulation material. External wall insulation External wall insulation provides exterior walls with insulation, finished surface and waterproofing in an integrated composite system. Because walls are areas where the house heat loss is one of the greatest reaching up to 35% of the overall, if they are not properly insulated, this is one of the most effective measures getting your home warmer and greener. Insulating from the outside has a clear advantage over conventional insulation techniques like dry-lining wall insulation. By insulating from the outside and cutting thermal bridges, the entire building structure is protected from the cold and wet weather, which is not the case with internal insulation. These type of insulation also has the biggest advantage for the homeowners applying for the Home Energy Saving Grants. For this measure the grant is the highest - up to €4,000 per household which can cover quite high part of the cost of external insulation. Homeowners availing of any external insulation grants under the Home Energy Savings scheme should aim to achieve a U-value of 0.27 W/m K or better (i.e. lower). External insulation involves fixing insulation materials such as mineral wool or expanded polystyrene slabs to the outer surface of the wall. This insulation is covered with a special cement-based render to provide weather resistance.A steel or fibreglass mesh is embedded in this render to provide strength and impact resistance. A thin layer of insulation may be applied around the edges of window and door openings to minimise thermal bridging. The technology is well-established in northern Europe, where it has been in use for many years, but is not yet widely used in Ireland. However after introducing Home Energy Saving Grants this technology has been very quickly accommodated by the external insulation contractors. Dry-Lining walls insulation Internal insulation (commonly referred to as 'dry-lining walls') involves fixing insulation to the inner surfaces of your external walls and covering it with a vapour barrier layer and plasterboard or, alternatively, compos-

ite boards of plasterboard backed with insulation and incorporating a vapour barrier. Types of insulation material used include expanded polystyrene, fibreglass and polyurethane boards. Polyurethane tends to be more expensive, but its thermal performance is approximately 50% better than polystyrene or fibreglass, so a 25 mm (1 inch) thickness of polyurethane will have roughly the same insulating performance as a 38 mm (1.5 inch) thickness of polystyrene. The undesirable condensation that may occur on the walls is prevented by installing a vapour barrier (e.g. a polythene sheet) on the warm (room) side of the insulation. Composite boards for internal insulation generally incorporate a vapour barrier. It is important that the vapour barrier be well sealed at wall, floor, ceiling, door and window junctions, around light switches and at all other breaks in the insulation. One of the main disadvantages of internal insulation is the loss of room space; this may be minimised by using high performance insulation products that are thinner. While this is often a more affordable option than installing external wall insulation, the loss of space and potential necessity to take out and re-fit fitted kitchens and appliances can result in people choosing the external insulation option. When installing internal insulation, the junctions of internal walls and floors with external walls may ‘short-circuit’ the insulation, allowing heat to escape. The presence of such ‘thermal bridges’ will reduce the effectiveness of internal insulation which is not a case by external wall insulation systems. Homeowners availing of any wall insulation grants under the Home Energy Savings scheme should aim to achieve a U-value of 0.27 W/m K or better (i.e. lower). Pitched roof insulation with an attic space If you have a pitched roof with an attic space, one of the simplest ceiling insulation methods is to lay a quilt (Mineral Fibre, Glass Fibre, Hemp, Sheepswool materials). If this type of material is to be used, it is important to ensure that the quilt is installed in two layers and in two directions in order to ensure the maximum benefit is achieved. There are many other products that can insulate effectively at ceiling level like shredded glass fibre, mineral fibre or cellulose fibre blown into the attic between and above ceiling joists. After the attic is insulated at joist level, its

temperature is reduced, and it is required to insulate the water storage tank and pipes. The water storage tank can be insulated with any semi-rigid insulating board and the pipes with closed cell neoprene, polyethylene, glass fibre and mineral fibre in pipe section form. Homeowners availing of insulation at horizontal ceiling level grants under the Home Energy Savings scheme should aim to achieve a U-value of 0.13 W/m K or better (i.e. lower). Conversion to an insulated attic room When converting your attic into a room, insulation is placed in between the rafters. The insulation can be semi-rigid insulation boards such as expanded polystyrene board, extruded polystyrene board, glass fibre batts, mineral fibre batts, urethane foam board or phenolic foam boards. Some contractors also offer a spray-on cellulose fibre or polyurethane foam insulation system between rafters. If a first layer of insulation is placed between rafters, a second, thin layer applied to the underside of the rafters avoids thermal bridging. Glass fibre quilt and mineral fibre quilt can also be used.A vapour check should be installed on the warm side of the insulation and ventilation above. These materials can be held in place by a plaster lining board across the underside of the rafters to minimise heat loss and provide the necessary fire protection. Lining boards can have integral insulation backings, such as glass-fibre-backed insulated plaster and urethane-foambacked insulated plasterboard, often lined with aluminium foil. Homeowners availing of attic insulation of a pitched roof or on slope level grants under the Home Energy Savings scheme should aim to achieve a U-value of 0.20 W/m K or better (i.e. lower). Flat roof insulation The type of insulation used in new flat roofs is dependent on the roof structure. On a new concrete slab, with a screed, semirigid insulation boards such as expanded polystyrene board, extruded polystyrene board, glass fibre batts, mineral fibre batts, urethane foam board or phenolic foam board are laid under the roof covering. In a new timber structure, glass fibre quilt and mineral fibre quilt can be laid between the joists. Homeowners availing of flat roof insulation grants under the Home Energy Savings scheme

Renault’s In-Fluence T

he Fluence has chic down to a T. With elongated lines, the headturning five-seat saloon is a graceful and elegant looking car. That style is continued inside the cabin. The 1.5 DCI 90bhp diesel model I was driving was upholstered in cloth and leather, with a nice swish of silver carbon fibre on the dash. At first glance the centre console looks a little busy but the audio controls can be worked from a stalk off the steering wheel. The advantage of a separate stalk is that no matter what position the steering wheel is in the controls are always in the same place. The USB port, located beside the radio controls, is also well placed in this car.

The steering wheel itself looks a little bare though, housing only the cruise control/speed limiter buttons. Unusually, the button to turn on and off the cruise control/limiter is on the centre console, with the button to set the speed located on the steering wheel. I liked that the system is on and ready to be used every time you turn on the engine, unless you deliberately turn it off. I also liked the resume function, which brings you back to your already nominated speed – if you have to temporarily slow down before overtaking, for instance. Legroom in the Renault Fluence is great both back and front. Like most cars, this five seater would probably be more comfortable in the back with just

two rear adult passengers. The middle rear seat can be converted to an armrest with cup holders. The boot in this car is also massive – and can be further extended by lowering the rear seats – they don’t lie flat though. Overall, I found the Renault Fluence to be a beautiful looking, beautifully designed large family saloon. The Renault Fluence is available now, with prices starting from €19,690. The test car I was driving costs from €23,790. Tech Spec Engine: 1.5dCi 90bhp (diesel) Acceleration: 0-100km/h in 13seconds Top Speed: 175km Fuel Economy: 4.5l/100km CO2 emissions: 118g/km Annual road tax: €200 Visit the Renault Ireland website or its Facebook page for further details.

oyota believes the all-new Toyota Rav4 is the ‘best value car’ it has launched in some time. The new compact SUV is now available at a starting price of €27,995 – €5,000 less than the outgoing model.Rav4 stands for Recreational Active Vehicle with 4 Wheel-Drive and Toyota says the original compact SUV has evolved since its 1994 launch to meet the current needs of ‘active lifestyle families with a growing demand for space and versatility’. With that in mind, the new Toyota Rav4 boasts bigger cargo and cabin space. Toyota says both two-wheel and four-wheel drive technology has been improved and this means the new Rav4 is cheaper to run. A range of petrol and diesel engines are available with either manual or automatic transmission. The diesel engines are expected to be the most popular, with the 2.0litre D-4D 124bhp front wheel drive variant Ardnaree, Ballina. 096-70523 Morgan

Meanwhile, move up to the Luna grade and you also get dual control air conditioning, sports seats, Toyota Touch multimedia system with reversing camera, and cruise control. The Sol trim adds heated front seats, rear parking sensors and full leather upholstery. Speaking at the Irish launch, Toyota Ireland managing director David Shannon said he believes Toyota has ‘something special’ with the Rav4 and he is quite confident it will prove popular among Irish motorists. The new Toyota Rav4 is available now with prices starting from €27,995 for the 2.0 D-4D 125 Aura 2WD.

New car sales down 14% in first quarter

C

ar sales for the first quarter of the year are down 14% on last year. 39,511 new cars were sold in the first 3 months of the year, compared to 45,840 last year, a decline of 6,329. Sales in March were down 10% with 1,356 fewer cars sold in the month. Alan Nolan, SIMI's Director General: "The first quarter of the year is always a crucial period for the Motor Industry. Traditionally, it is a good indicator of how sales will perform for the rest of the year. Half of all new car sales are usually done in the first 3 months of the year. Based on current figures, we're predicting a new car market of 70,000 this year, slightly down on our original expectations." "Even this reduced estimate for the year hides a very tough marketplace in the sector. In reality, the natural market is actually significantly poorer and the Industry is having to drive sales with really strong offers to consumers. Although the Exchequer benefits in the short-term from such Industry-driven sales, in the longer term, VRT and VAT income is likely to be negatively impacted in due course." "The Industry must sell cars that were ordered and

in the pipeline for this year based on the original expectations but a bad experience this year is likely to lead to a much more conservative view of next year’s market and this will impact on tax revenues next year. At the moment, though, all of this is good news for the consumer with very strong offers available on new cars and with a shortage of good quality used cars in the marketplace trade-ins are in huge demand." Key figures for Q1 Top selling car makes: Volkswagen Toyota Ford Top selling models: Volkswagen Golf Nissan Qashqai Ford Focus - new car sales in March down 10% compared to last year (11,695 v 13051) - 94% of cars sold so far this year fall in the two lowest CO2 emission categories - 27% of cars sold were petrol, 72% diesel

Yoga for Depression and Anxiety the external world go. Focusing within facilitates recognition of what may be triggering the anxiety, which is usually those habitual thoughts and unresolved conflicts. Yoga breath work is one of the key methods in counteracting anxiety. Breath is life and puts us in touch with our essence. When threatened, real or imagined, our bodies react. Therefore, during an anxiety attack the body reacts to what is perceived as a threat. This results in tension, rigidity, and choppy, constricted or cessation of breath. Yoga teaches you to slow down your breath, relax your body, and look inward at the precipitating event.

Y

oga is an ancient mind-body practice with origins in Eastern Indian Philosophy. The word yoga in Sanskrit actually means to yoke or unite. Yoga combines physical postures (asanas) with breath-work (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana), concentration (dharana), relaxation, balance, strength, and stamina. Current research on yoga suggests that it improves mood and gives a general sense of well-being. It is beneficial in counteracting stress and reducing heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. Yoga for Anxiety Many people suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. Anxiety can be a useful emotion if it

heightens your awareness to make healthier choices. However, when anxiety becomes more than a little nervousness, it can be very debilitating. Sufferers of anxiety and panic disorders complain of exhaustion and mental fatigue. Some of these symptoms include obsessive thinking, insomnia, migraines, intestinal problems, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath and heart palpitations. The appearance of anxiety in your daily life can drastically influence your lifestyle. Research suggests that excessive worry sabotages the immune system, weakening the body’s ability to fight off disease and heal. Yoga is effective in treating anxiety by reducing the symptoms. One of yoga’s basic tenants is to turn your focus inward, letting

Yoga for Depression The benefit of yoga on depression is another area being explored. One of the biggest contributing factors to depression is stress. Depression increases the fight or flight response in the sympathetic nervous system. Persistent/chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system elevates the stress hormone cortisol. It is a well-known fact that cortisol has a major influence on stress related illnesses. Part of yoga’s effectiveness is its ability to decrease stress and increase a sense of wellbeing. Yoga breath work boosts the oxygen level to the brain; the postures alleviate tension, promoting introspection, and in conjunction with deep relaxation and meditation techniques, produces a calming effect. Among yoga’s anti-stress benefits are positive levels of certain brain chemicals that decrease catecholamine. Findings also suggest lower levels of the hormone neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (when elevated, all of these neurotransmitters are involved in fight or flight response and increase fear and anger and decrease the ability to think realistically), which facilitate a calming feeling. There is also an increase in oxytocin, the hormone that is released during childbirth, maternal bonding and during orgasm, sometimes referred to as the “love hormone.” Students who practice yoga on a regular basis report a feeling of increased trust and a heightened sense of connectedness and bonding with others.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE

Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process

A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.

A Loss Assessor will:

• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf

Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

White & Associates

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company.

• Public Loss Assessors • Independent Claim Estimators • Property Damage Insurance Consultants

There are always grey areas Claims assessing is not an exact science and there are many instances where there is no absolute answer to the way a claim for a particular item should be settled. Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. LOSS ASSESSORS charge a fee agreed with you in advance, for the work undertaken ON YOUR BEHALF

When should I appoint my Loss Assessor?

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?

The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims

Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your
