T
he recent death of Tom Gilmartin, whose evidence to the planning tribunal was crucial and damaging to some senior politicians, has given rise to calls for the naming of a street after him to commemorate the Sligo man who has, perhaps, contributed more to the process of cleaning up politics in Ireland than any other person or group. Originally from Co. Sligo, Mr. Gilmartin had a successful career as a developer in England and lived in Luton for most of his adult life. His involvement in Irish life came when he tried to build a shopping centre in Quarryvale, west Dublin. He was a classic example of an Irish person who gained considerable success abroad but when he tried to do the same thing in his own country, he found the rules were different. If the tribunal findings are correct he got a lesson in how we did things differently here from the likes of Burke, Flynn, Lawlor and others. While some would contend that he was prepared to participate in the process initially his ultimate decision to testify turned him into a man who truly did do the State some service. A now infamous interview on the Late Late Show by former EU commissioner Pádraig Flynn in 1999 led to a chain of events that culminated in the resignation of Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach nine years later. Baxter Healthcare to seek 110 voluntary redundancies
H
ot on the heels of good news last week that Northgate were to create 150 jobs in Castlebar came the announcement early this week that Baxter Healthcare is to seek over 100 voluntary redundancies at its manufacturing facility in the town. The company is scaling back production of a number of lines at the site, including renal
dialysis equipment. It plans to reduce the numbers working on weekend shifts from 180 to 70. It is understood that the 110 redundancies will be sought across the Castlebar operation. Baxter employs in the region of 800 people at its manufacturing operation there. The company said the decision to seek the

redundancies is being made to "drive supply chain efficiency and provide flexibility in its global manufacturing network". The majority of the redundancies will be implemented during the first quarter of next year. Baxter Healthcare employs almost 1,000 people at its two manufacturing plants in Castlebar and Swinford. It has been in Mayo since the 1970s. The redundancies are part of a global rationalization programme following the loss of a worldwide tender. It is understood that the job losses will be confined to Baxter’s facility in Castlebar and the staffing levels in Swinford will not affected by the decision. Staff had been called into a meeting on Sunday evening and it is understood the meeting coincided with similar announcements across the company’s world-wide plants. It is also understood that staff have been offered a good redundancy package with seven weeks pay for each year of service on offer. While some are confident about rhe future of the future of Baxter in Castlebar, Labour Party Councillor Harry Barrett believes the signs are ominous since it comes so soon after the 150 redundancies in 2012. Unlike Allergan in Westport they seem to have no plans for expansion which is a major concern in the long-term. SIPTU had a meeting with management of the company yesterday. In 2011, the firm was forced to temporarily shut down some production in Castlebar following endotoxin contamination on an assembly line there. The contamination led to temporary job losses at the time.

Darren Bastin, Director at Bonus Beds Sligo said “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen to be included in The Sleep Councils retailer panel. Darren continued ”It is a massive opportunity for us to feedback really useful, first hand customer information to The Sleep Council and being the only retailer in Ireland on the panel, we can help to fine tune this specifically to the Irish market” Darren concluded “We love having access to The Sleep Council’s marketing campaigns, all designed to

A true modern Irish hero Continued from the front page Mr Flynn was asked about allegations that he had taken a £50,000 bribe from Mr Gilmartin. Mr Flynn replied that neither Mr Gilmartin nor his wife were “well” – a remark which Mr Gilmartin took personally and he decided to testify at the Mahon tribunal investigating corruption in the planning process. The tribunal found Mr Flynn had “wrongly and corruptly” sought a £50,000 payment from Mr Gilmartin in 1994 – which he used to buy a farm in Co Mayo in his wife Dorothy’s name. In a statement the family said Mr Gilmartin was “a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. We mourn the loss of a truly honest, honourable and courageous man.

“Legal questions” following closure of greenway section
T
HE news that a section of the Western Greenway has been closed by a landowner in Achill, effectively cutting the successful tourist trail in two, shows once again the need for legislation to provide for walking routes and cycling paths in scenic
areas of the country, according to Councillor Harry Barrett. The Labour Party representative explained: “Coming on top of the Lissadell judgement, this is yet another blow for walking tourism in the west and it will cost the county jobs and
income. “The Western Greenway alone generates €7.2 million for the local economy in Mayo, according to Fáilte Ireland, yet even this successful project is being jeopardised by the actions of a single uncooperative landowner. This will certainly hurt the local economy. “This is yet another example of why it is important that we pass legislation to give responsible walkers more access to the countryside, and the economic benefits of such a measure would be quite substantial. “In Scotland, land access legislation was introduced a decade ago and the Scottish tourist industry is benefitting hugely, earning around £1.4 billion from nature based tourism. If we implemented access legislation in Ireland, it would be a huge boost to our tourist industry, and help create jobs where they are badly needed. “For all these reasons, the Labour Party introduced the Access to the Countryside Bill in June of this year which is aimed at helping to create jobs in the tourist industry by giving walkers greater access to our beautiful countryside. “The bill will be discussed in detail by the Oireachtas Environment Committee early next year and will hear from all the stakeholders involved, including landowners and walking groups. “The fact that the Western Greenway in Mayo, which is bringing €7.2 million per year to the local economy, is being cut in two by a single landowner, shows that legislation is needed in this area.”
Concern over condition of Ballisodare house
Concern has been expressed in Ballisodare about the condition of a house recently gutted by fire. The burnt out house at Woodbrook Heights is said to be accessible and neighbours are worried about anti-social behaviour. Sinn Fein local election candidate Thomas Healy said: "Concern is mounting about the the overall condition and open access to the dwelling. "This is actually the second time in recent years that this house has been burnt out. "The danger of the fire spreading and the potential smoke and structural damage to adjoining buildings is a major issue for residents. "Even more pressing however is that the property is open and allows access to the public. This is an immediate health and safety issue. "Neighbours are fearful of the potential for additional damage being caused by anti-social behaviour in the house at night." He has written to the Council asking for interim safety measures to be put in place.

Urban-rural co-operation urged on pylon issue WHILE Ballina town council recently passed a motion supporting Cllr Mark Winters’ proposal that Eirgrid puts its controversial pylon project underground the move seems to be gathering momentum nationwide. THE majority of TDs and senators serving on the Oireachtas Communications Committee want the State's controversial new pylon project to go underground, according to survey carried out by the Sunday Independent. The findings come as Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte comes under mounting pressure on an issue that threatens to dominate some of next year's local elections. And it comes as incoming EirGrid chairman John O'Connor – who is at the centre of conflict of interest claims over his previous role with An Bord Pleanala – will this week be grilled by members of the same committee who are opposed to the semi-state company's plans to erect giant 45-metre pylons across huge swathes of the countryside. Eighteen of the 21 committee members responded to queries from the Sunday Independent this weekend. Eleven said they wanted the project to go underground, while seven said they were "undecided".
Not a single TD or senator on the committee said they backed Mr Rabbitte and EirGrid's preferred option to put the project overground, which has sparked mass protest meetings across the country in recent weeks. Kerry South Independent TD Tom Fleming said the project should go underground because "health and heritage issues are a big concern for people". And although he admitted that going underground would be the more expensive option
in the short term, he insisted it "would result in long-term savings". That view was shared by Sinn Fein's Michael Colreavy, the TD for Sligo/North Leitrim. Mr Colreavy said there was "conflicting information on the issue" but argued "undergrounding would be cheaper over a 35-40-year life cycle". The Ballina town council member‘s motion was urging urban-rural co-operation in the campaign to have EirGrid put the 400kV cables in the
Grid West project under the ground. It follows the example set by elected members of Mayo County Council earlier this month in calling on the governmment to intervene in the controversy. Councillor Winters said that elected members of the town council often talk in a selfish way about what the hinterland can do for the town of Ballina, but now was a time for townspeople to think about what they could do for residents of the hinterland. He made his comments at the November monthly meeting of the council, where he tabled a notice of motion calling on EirGrid to put the cables underground.

Crime wave hits Leitrim
C
RIME levels continue to increase despite efforts by the gardai and others to prevent it. Over €30,000 in tools and metal were stolen by thieves in a planned robbery at a construction site near Manorhamilton last week. The thieves broke into containers on the site at Carrickeeny near Manorhamilton, making off with copper tubing valued at €15,000 and a large amount of power tools including drills, skill saws and angle grinders and other items valued at over €15,000. Leitrim District Superintendent, John Furlong, said two vehicles entered the property some time between 1am and 6am on November 22. One of vehicles, a van, was later
recovered just outside Sligo and two hi-vis vests connected to the construction site were found on the Sligo Road outside of Manorhamilton. “A substantial amount of copper tubing and tools were taken and we are following some very good lines of enquiry in relation to this,” he said. “We are appealing, however, to anyone in the area who may have noticed anything suspicious in this area on the morning in question to contact Manorhamilton Garda Station on (071) 9855014,” he said. The Superintendant also urged the public not to purchase any tools from unknown traders online or from roadside traders in the lead-up to Christmas. A special rapid response task force has
been set up in Co Leitrim to tackle the incidences of theft and burglary in the region and they have already been successful in breaking a highly organised Dublin based shoplifting gang. Superintendent Furlong said that a property in inner city Dublin was searched as a result of a joint investigation involving members of the Co Leitrim based task force. Two people were arrested and a substantial amount of goods were recovered, some of which are believed to have been stolen from branded retail premises in Carrick-on-Shannon and Sligo. The two people arrested were brought before a sitting of Dublin District Court last week where they were charged in relation to a number of offences. Meanwhile, two schools were targeted by thieves over the weekend. Drumboylan NS and Strabraggan NS, Arigna were broken into some time on Sunday night/Monday morning. The thieves ransacked filing cabinets and cupboards before making off with laptops and cash. Gardai are asking that anyone who may have noticed any suspicious vehicles in the area to contact them at Boyle Garda Station on (071) 9664620. A business on the Boyle Road, Carrick-onShannon was also targeted by thieves for the second time in a matter of weeks. The logistics business was the focus of a raid nearly a month ago and thieves struck again some time on Wednesday night/Thursday morning last, ramming the roller door of the building. The culprits are believed to have arrived on the scene in a black car. They made off with nothing but caused significant damage to the door. They also stole a red van belonging to the business which was later found abandoned near Sligo. Anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious on the night in question should ring Carrick Gardai on (071) 9620021.
Roscommon concerns over religious group A religious group in west Roscommon claiming to be part of the Catholic Church is causing some concern and has prompted the local Catholic bishop to make a statement on the matter. This week the Bishop of Achonry, Most Rev. Dr. Brendan Kelly, distanced himself from the group, the Ballaghaderreen based Congregation Of Our Lady of Refuge, stating that it had “nothing to do with the Catholic Church” and “nothing to do with the Achonry Diocese”. According to Mike Garde, the Director of Dialogue Ireland, he had been contacted by members of the public in relation to concerns over the establishment of the group in the Ballaghaderreen area. “We have been contacted by members of the public in relation to the establishment of this organisation and we are investigating these concerns. “We get calls from people on a nearly daily basis, and in the case of Roscommon we are investigating the concerns raised about Ballaghaderreen’s Congregation Of Our Lady of Refuge. “We contacted Bishop Brendan Kelly, the
Bishop of Achonry in May to see if he was aware of the existence of this church, which claims to be part of the Catholic Church and he told us he was not aware of it. These concerns need to be investigated,” explained
Bishop of Achonry, Rev. Dr. Brendan Kelly
Mr Garde. Dialogue Ireland is an independent trust that seeks to promote people’s freedom to make informed choices about religious, spiritual and philosophical beliefs. It is understood that the congregation was established less than a year ago by a Ballaghaderreen businessman and has only a small number of members. The concerns regarding the organisation were raised prior to details emerging from a property in London last week where three women, including a 57year-old Irish woman were held for thirty years. “As an organisation assisting the victims of cultism, we are contacted every week by members of the public about concerns over cults from all across Ireland and the rest of the world. “However, since the story emerged in London last week, the amount of calls we have received has been overwhelming. We try to help people clarify whether the problems they are encountering result from involvement with cultism or other issues. We refer people on to counsellors who understand the issues related to cult involvement,” he said.
Debt-ridden Sligo appoints new football manager
T
he Sligo county board last week ratified Pat Flanagan to take over as manager of the senior team for 2014. He had vacated the Westmeath managerial position at the end of the summer. Flanagan brings a good record to the job, taking Westmeath from division three to division one in three years, and also winning county championships with Tyrellspass and Clara, although he found himself unwanted in his native county at the end of this summer, partly on the back of a heavy defeat to Dublin. So he takes over the Sligo reins which had been held by former Galway player Kevin Walsh for the last four years. The Sligo board, because of its indebtiness, was refused permission for months from Croke Park to recruit a new manager. Reports in September revealed that the county board was €1.5m in debt and in need of a €250,000 loan from Croke Park to meet their day-to-day running costs. It was decided that no movement would be made on recruiting a new manager until budgets had been agreed with Croke Park for 2014. The GAA's monitoring committee, which included the chairman of the finance committee in Croke Park, Lauri Quinn, Connacht GAA secretary John Prenty and Gerry McGovern, instructed Sligo GAA to get their affairs in order, starting with short and long-term budgets and a fundraising plan. Work had also ground to a halt on the €3.2m Sligo GAA Centre of Excellence at Scarden on the SligoStrandhill Road. Flanagan has been appointed for a one-year term, which will be reviewed at the end of the season and will be meeting the players this week in addition to finalising a back room team, which also forms part of the management of the Under-21 team.

P. J. Reilly – maintaining a I proud musical tradition
t was with his mother Betty's band that young P.J. Reilly began his music career at the age of 14. In the 70’s the band was an all family affair made up of Betty and her three sons, P.J., Liam and John. The band toured in the UK after being invited over by Seamus Moore and even enjoyed a No. 1 hit in the Irish Charts in England with the single 'The Tower of Sweet Rathlee'. P.J. later retired from music, exploring other work opportunities. He married Barbara and had 2 children, David and Claire. However his main career has been as a skipper of various fishing boats out of Killala, Co Mayo, but with fishing in sharp decline he is now semi-retired and splits his time between his music and running his small lobster boat ,his pride and joy, the “Florence Anne “ on beautiful Killala Bay Now P.J. has made a comeback as a one – man band and released a 12track album 'The Tower of Sweet Rathlee' last year which includes some original songs. He got a lot of his inspiration for his songs while out fishing in Killala Bay Incidentally, the song “Killala Bay” was written by his brother, Liam. P.J. has been busy recording his new album 'The Green Fields of Kilglass' which is now on sale locally in Sligo & Mayo. He has also recorded a 3 track DVD, which includes the tracks The Tower of Sweet Rathlee, Killala bay & Attymass (which PJ wrote as part of the Mayo Gathering celebrations) To buy a CD or DVD contact PJ on 086-8989571 or Email: barbarapjreilly@eircom.net.
Impressive tourism growth as Gathering year draws to a close
Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring
T
he North West, in line with other areas or Ireland, has benefited significantly from the Gathering events organised by communities across the region. Festivals, musical and cultural events of all kinds helped to make it a year of resurgence of many areas of the tourist industry. Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring has described new figures showing a 7.3% increase in visitor numbers this year as ‘phenomenal’. “The combination of The Gathering, more flights into Ireland, better value for
money and the Government’s own initiatives have made 2013 a truly great year for tourism. These are phenomenal figures with increased visitor numbers from all our main markets, particularly from our higher spending long-haul markets,” Minister Ring said. New CSO figures show more than over 6 million overseas visits to Ireland in the first ten months of the year - an increase of 7.3% on the corresponding period in 2012. For the first ten months of 2013, compared to the same period in 2012:
• North American visits were up by 14.6%; • Visits from Great Britain were up by 5.1%; • Mainland European visits were up by 5.6%; • Other long-haul routes were up by 14.4%. “This is just the latest good economic news about Irish tourism. Earlier this week we learned that 25% of all new employment growth in the last year is in the tourismrelated accommodation & food tourism sector. Tourism is playing a leading role in our economic recovery and I am confident that we will meet the key targets we set for The Gathering. “I’m really pleased by the visitor numbers from Britain, which has been one of our most challenging markets in recent years. We had 12.2% more visitors from Britain between July and September, compared to the same three months in 2012. Our Launch of Tourism Ireland’s marketing plans next week will help us to continue getting the message out that there has never been a better time to visit Ireland.” Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland said: “Today’s figures from the CSO for the ten-month period to the end of October are very strong, showing growth from almost all of our markets around the world. We are seeing record growth this year from North America (+14.6% up to the end
of October); and from our long-haul markets (+14.4%), with Australia and New Zealand in particular driving that growth. I am particularly pleased to see a good return to growth in British visitor numbers (+5.1%). Mainland Europe is also playing its part in growing tourism business from overseas this year (+5.6%); in fact, 2013 looks set to be the best year ever for visitors from Germany, France and Spain. Next week we will launch our marketing plans for 2014 and beyond – when we will announce details of how we will build on the success of 2013 and sustain growth in overseas tourism into the future.” Welcoming the figures, Fáilte Ireland CEO Shaun Quinn said: “Today’s figures are further evidence of an impressive recovery in the tourism sector. Working closely with tourism businesses, Fáilte Ireland has been hearing of growth across all sectors – accommodation, attractions, and restaurants as well as receiving direct feedback that overseas markets are now really delivering for tourism businesses - in particular North America. A combination of ‘The Gathering’, recent Government initiatives and improving overseas markets has helped to ensure that tourism has begun to reap the benefits of increased visitors, employment and revenue.”

A housing estate for €50,000 Another indication of the disparity in prices between east and west, not to mention another reminder of the legacy of the Celtic Tiger, a 14 house estate in Ballindine, together with six more sites in the estate, sold for a mere €50,000 last week. A good number of the houses in the Ard Lugalisheen estate are ‘close to completion’ while some more ‘need a good bit of work’ according to David Reynolds of Gunne Reynolds Auctioneers in Sligo, who sold the estate on behalf of a financial institution. All the houses are three bedroom semi-detatched houses. While it might seem like a giveaway price, Mr Reynolds puts some context on the sale. “It is definitely good value but it is not something that everyone would be able to buy,” he told The Mayo News yesterday (Monday). “It is value to someone who would have the funds to finish it off but there is a good bit of money to be spent on it yet. “Even if any of the houses are finished shortly, it does not mean they are ready to go because the groundworks on the estate have to be finished. The buyer will have to spend a lot of money on it,” added Mr Reynolds. Mr Reynolds added that the buyer will have to comply with the planning permission granted for the development and will have to pay bonds to Mayo County Council and finish the estate for the taking over by the council for maintenance. Essentially the entire estate will have to be finished by the buyer in order to sell the houses in it. But €50,000 for six sites alone represents value, not to mention 14 houses in various stages of completion on top of that. The estate has been idle for a number of years and its construction began over six years ago, The Mayo News understands. It is located on the Ballyhaunis road out of Ballindine. The auction took place in the McWilliam Park in Claremorris on Friday afternoon. There was in the region of 30 people at the auction, which was a single lot auction. Not many bids were taken and David Reynolds said they ‘expected’ the estate to go for more than €50,000. The buyer, he was, was not from Mayo.

Stress levels rising for three in ten Irish consumers M
intel's annual Irish Lifestyles report highlights a significant rise in Ireland’s stress levels as the economic downturn sees financial pressure taking its toll on Irish health. Indeed, revealing an alarming increase in the levels of stress suffered by consumers today, as many as 35% of RoI consumers report a rise in stress levels. Meanwhile, those in the NI are also affected, with 28% of consumers there reporting an increase in stress levels. The report also sees stress driving consumers to food, with around one in seven (15% of NI and 14% of RoI) Irish consumers admitting stress is making them eat more than they should. Brian O’Connor, Senior Consumer Analyst at Mintel, said: “The economy may be improving, but the tight costs of living are still adding to Irish consumer pressure and are taking their toll on Irish mental health. Furthermore, this increased pressure is seeing consumers turn to comfort foods to cope, adversely affecting their health. Time pressure is leaving consumers with less time to cook and exercise, and as a result driving consumers towards convenience food which is often rich in salt and fat and a sedentary lifestyle.” Weight and health - lack of willpower is a problem for nation’s dieters Around two thirds (64% of NI and 66% of RoI) of Irish consumers say they would like to be in better physical health, pointing to a desire to be healthier. That said, some 31% of NI and 33% of RoI consumers admit that
they worry more about their weight and physical appearance than actual health - pointing to a very body conscious society. Today, only 6% of NI and 5% of RoI consumers feel that willpower is required when sticking to a diet. What is more, some 30% of NI and 32% of RoI consumers agree that not eating junk food is important to a healthy lifestyle. But while most consumers recognise that eating junk food is bad for their health, this does not stop them indulging. Indeed, 14% of NI and 11% of RoI consumers admit to eating junk food at least once per day, with younger consumers aged between 1624 (30% RoI and 24% NI) being most likely to do so. Today, some 28% of RoI and 27% of NI consumers admit to feeling confused about what is healthy for them due to conflicting information on health foods and diets. Meanwhile, only 18% of NI and 12% of RoI consumers pay attention to colour coded nutrition labels. And when it comes to healthy eating, cost is a major issue, some 46% of NI and 47% of RoI consumers feel buying healthy food can be expensive. “While the desire to be in better physical health is good news, without willpower to stick to diets and exercise regimes, it could be wasted time, energy and money on the part of consumers. If this attitude persists, the cycle of Irish consumers falling on and off the wagon in terms of dieting and exercising will continue. Costs of living in Ireland increased between 2012 and 2013, and this has put the squeeze on consumers’ grocery spending. With so many
consumers perceiving healthy food as being expensive, if the trend for consumer prices to increase continues into 2014, it could see more consumers turning away from fresh goods, premium brand diet products, and more towards cheaper foods - that may not necessarily be healthy.” Brian continues. The vices - drinking and smoking Today, as many as four in ten (39% in NI and 42% in RoI) Irish drink alcohol on a weekly basis, and one in twenty (5% in RoI and 7% in NI ) drink every day. While two in five drink on a weekly basis some three in ten (29% of NI and 28% of RoI) consumers agree that they think that not drinking too much is important to a healthy lifestyle. And it is not just drink with which Irish consumers acknowledge the health risks. Some 51% of RoI and 52% of NI consumers note that they feel not smoking is a key factor in leading a healthy lifestyle, pointing to a high level of consumers recognising the dangers of tobacco products. Despite this, around a fifth of Irish (19% of NI and 22% of RoI ) consumers smoke at least once per day in 2013. Friends are key to Irish happiness - but technology gets between friends and family Mintel’s research also reveals the importance of friends and family to the nation’s happiness. Today, as many as 57% of RoI and 53% of NI consumers see a close circle of friends and family as being important for a happy life. Friends take preference over taking time to enjoy family life (41% of RoI and
39% of NI) and a good work/life balance (37% RoI and 38% of NI). And it seems that for most Irish consumers, money isn’t the key to happiness, indeed, just three in ten Irish (31% of RoI and 30% of NI) see healthy finances as key to a happy life and less than a fifth (17% in RoI and 19% in NI) feel being prepared financially for the future will bring happiness. While friends are key to the nation’s happiness, technology is having an impact on friendship with those who spend longer online being less inclined to care about friends and family. Some 61% of NI and 60% of RoI consumers who spend between one and three hours online per day agree that family is important. By comparison, only 33% of NI and 50% of RoI consumers who spend seven hours or more online feel family is important to their happiness. “Consumers see their family and friends as important to their happiness, which should see demand for the likes of family holidays, and other family oriented leisure activities remain constant moving forward. However, the longer consumers spend online the less they seem to care about their families. If internet and technology usage continues to grow among Irish consumers, it could see many people becoming more isolated from their friends and family, as they forsake them for video games, social networks and other online activities.” claims Brian. THE lengthy report also goes on to say that less than half of Irish people have OK financial health while technology and health presents a mixed bag.

Sligo Woman Becomes World Powerlifting Champion
& Clare Connolly Deadlift. Photo by Tommy Kavanagh
C
lare Connolly, daughter of Eileen and Patrick Connolly, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, has returned from the World Drug Free Powerlifting Championships in Glasgow with a world title for Ireland in the under 53kg seniors division. Connolly (36), trains with the Abs Gym in Dublin's Templebar, took up competitive powerlifting in January of this year and has since developed a strong passion for the sport
and strength training. "When my trainer told me he thought I should start competing, I thought he was joking. Then I decided to go check out one of the Irish Drug Free Powerlifting Association's competitions, and I thought I could maybe give it a go. I never expected to hold a national record and be representing Ireland at the world championships within a year!". But it hasn't all been plain sailing. Connolly
qualified for the world championships by lifting the minimum weight required for her weight category. "I didn't have a kilo to spare! But I got in. My training over the summer was up and down, and I just wasn't feeling quite right on the day, so my lifts weren't quite as high as I'd hoped for the worlds, but they were enough for me to bring home the trophy". Powerlifing is a sport that tests pure strength and is rapidly gaining momentum in Ireland over the past 12 months. The IDFPA now has an impressive 350 members, who attend regular competitions throughout the year. The number of women becoming involved in the sport is steadily increasing too. "I'd love to see more women with a desire to become strong. It always amazes me that people don't really associate women with strength or sometimes think it's an unfeminine attribute. Being strong of body makes you stronger of mind and character. When you feel fit and strong, life is easier and you're more capable of dealing with challenges that come your way and enjoying life to the max." Powerlifitng involves three lifts. The squat, where the athlete places a barbell on her back and squats down to below parallel (hip joint below knee joint). The bench press, where the bar must touch the lifter's chest and remain there until a referee calls "Press". And the deadlift, where a loaded barbell is lifted from the floor until lock-out. Each lift has technical standards that much be achieved and commands that must be followed. Three judges asses each lift before a white light is given and the lift is passed as "good". At only 5ft 2in and 51.9kg in bodyweight, Connolly lifted an impressive 75kg for the squat, 47.5kg for the bench press and over double her bodyweight of 105kg in the deadlift. All eyes will be on the Sligo woman for the world championships in Moldova next year as she's hoping to have significantly increased her totals in all lifts by then and return with another gold for Ireland.
How are you fixed for Christmas? Mark Geary & Glen Hansard have collaborated on Mark’s song “Christmas Biscuits” and are releasing it on November 29th to raise funds for St. Vincent de Paul. Recorded with some of Ireland’s best musicians and engineered by Karl Odlum. Everyone involved in the recording has kindly donated their time for free. “Christmas Biscuits” is a song written by Mark when he was living in New York missing his native Dublin. It brings a mix of emotions that sum up the happy and sometimes difficult period Christmas can be. This is why Mark thought St Vincent DePaul was the perfect fit for the song. The Society that helps people in difficult times throughout the year but at Christmas needs extra help to get people through the holiday period. “Christmas Biscuits” will help raise awareness and revenue for St. Vincent de Paul along with their now famous Toy Appeal being launched on November 20th. Glen Hansard is currently on tour in Europe and coming back to Ireland with 2 shows in Dublin’s Vicar St. on November 25th and 26th. Mark and his band are doing support for Glen on the 25th. Mark is also currently on tour and will be playing a Christmas show in Grand Social, Dublin on Saturday December 28th. Tickets for all
shows are available on www.ticketmaster.ie. “Christmas Biscuits” can be downloaded from iTunes on Friday November 29th. For more information please visit www.svp.ie, www.markgeary.com, www.glenhansardmusic.com, or email simon@markgeary.com

Man Swapped At Birth Regrets Lost Life
A
60-year-old Japanese man switched at birth in a Toyko hospital has told of his shock at learning the truth of how different his life could have been. After winning a lawsuit against the hospital that mistakenly cast him from a wealthy family into a life of poverty, the man said: "I've wondered how on earth could this happen. "I couldn't believe it. To be honest, I didn't want to accept it.
"I might have had a different life. I want (the hospital) to roll back the clock to the day I was born," he told Japanese media. A Tokyo district court ordered the hospital to pay 38 million yen (â‚Ź356,600) in damages over its 1953 blunder which saw the man switched with another baby boy who was delivered 13 minutes later. The court ruled that 32 million yen (â‚Ź278,780) should go to the man and the rest to his three biological
brothers. It is not clear if the hospital, which has not been named by Japanese media and has not commented on the bizarre case, will appeal. The man, an unmarried truck driver, would have grown up as the eldest of four brothers in a wealthy family where siblings enjoyed a lavish lifestyle including private tutors. Instead, he was raised on benefits by his non-biological mother who also supported older siblings after her husband passed away when he was two. The family lived in a one-room apartment with a radio one of their few luxuries, according to the man who studied at night school while working in a factory. "It was like she was born to experience hardship," the man said of the woman he knew as his mother. She is now also dead. The man has been helping take care of his non-biological brothers, one of whom suffered a stroke. The decades-old mistake was uncovered when the wealthy family's three younger brothers had DNA testing done on their oldest sibling who looked nothing like them - after their parents died.
They checked hospital records and confirmed the identity of their biological eldest brother last year. The man switched at birth said he cried daily for several months after learning the truth. "As I saw pictures of my (biological) parents, I wanted to see them alive. I couldn't hold back tears for months every time I saw their pictures." One of my brothers "told me that we will have 20 more years to live so we should make up for lost time", he added. "I was happy to hear that and I want to do it." Judge Masatoshi Miyasaka cut the size of the award but said he recognised the man had lost a chance of higher education and had suffered emotional pain. The mothers in both families had seemingly suspected they had been raising the wrong babies. "I think my foster mother might have sensed it," the man said, noting physical differences from the siblings he grew up with. His real brothers remember their mother saying her first baby came back from his first bath in hospital wearing the wrong clothes.
Simon Gittany Guilty Of High-Rise Murder A man has been found guilty of throwing his fiancee off the balcony of their high-rise apartment in central Sydney. Simon Gittany was accused of hurling Lisa Harnum from their 15th floor home in a fit of "apoplectic" rage in July 2011 after discovering she planned to leave him and return to her native Canada. Gittany, 40, who was supported in court by his new girlfriend Rachelle Louise, had maintained throughout the trial that Ms Harnum, 30, had slipped and fallen after climbing over a railing. He said he had tried to save Ms Harnum, a former ballerina. But Justice Lucy McCallum said the lack of Ms Harnum's fingerprints on the glass barrier made his claim implausible. "At many times in his evidence, the accused struck me as being a person playing a role, telling a story which fitted with the objective evidence, but which did no more than that," she said. Gittany barely reacted in court as the verdict was
read out. His current girlfriend screamed at the judge "You're wrong", and stormed out of the packed courtroom. Ms Louise's outburst continued after she left the court. Delivering the verdict in the judge-only trial, Justice McCallum said witness Josh Rathmell, who had been walking past the apartment building on his way to work when he saw Ms Harnum fall, gave a compelling account. At the time, Mr Rathmell thought he had seen Gittany "unload" a piece of luggage or rubbish and continued on his way. It was only later he realised it was a body and contacted the police. Justice McCallum said while Gittany and Ms Harnum had loved each other, there was no doubt the accused was "controlling, dominating and at times abusive". "I am satisfied by the end of July 2011, those tensions had reached a point of crisis," she said. The New South Wales Supreme Court heard that Gittany had secretly monitored Ms Harnum's
phone and had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside their apartment. One of the cameras showed Gittany restraining Ms Harnum outside the flat and then dragging her back inside on the night she died. Ms Harnum was heard yelling: "Please help me, help me, God help me." Ms Harnum's mother said there
Latvia Supermarket Collapse: PM Quits Latvia's prime minister has resigned over a supermarket roof collapse that left dozens dead and sparked public outrage. Valdis Dombrovskis, who has been in power since 2009, said the country needed a change in leadership after the disaster in the capital Riga. He has overseen a number of spending cuts, including the abolition of a state construction authority which critics claim may have picked up on potential building flaws at the supermarket. Mr Dombrovskis, who is Latvia's longest serving prime minister, denied he was pressured into standing down. "Considering the ... tragedy and all the related circumstances, the country needs a government that has majority support in parliament and can solve the situation that has arisen," he added. The cause of the collapse at the Maxima supermarket, which killed 54 people and wounded at least 40, is subject to a criminal investigation. Possible explanations for the disaster - the worst since Latvia declared its independence in 1991 - include a flawed design and below-par building materials.
were no winners in the case. Her only hope was that her daughter's death would be a powerful wake-up call to other young women. "Young women who are caught up in situations like my daughter found herself in need a voice," Joan Harnum said. Gittany, who was held in custody for the final weeks of the trial, will be sentenced in February.
Slimmer Of The Year Is Ruby
A former rescue dog has been crowned the pet slimming champion of the year after shedding a third of her bodyweight. Ruby the Jack Russell terrier was morbidly obese after growing to 9.1kg, making her more than 50% overweight. After a six-month diet and fitness regime run by charity PDSA, she has lost 7in from her waist and weighs in at just over 6kg. "When Ruby first came to us, we all felt really sorry for her as she'd had such a tough start to life," said owner Angela Martin, from Sunderland. "So to compensate, we used to give her a little treat here and there. "The trouble was, the whole family was giving her 'a little treat' and over time, she started to get really big." Along with 15 other fat pets, the fit club did the trick and Ruby has been given a new lease of life. PDSA senior veterinary surgeon Elaine Pendlebury said: "This is a fantastic slimming success story, well done Ruby. Many people fall into the trap of overindulging their pet with food as a way of expressing their love. "Angela and her family have worked really hard and have shown that it's never too late to make a positive change." Some of the other top slimmers included Cookie the cat, from Middlesbrough, who shed 17cm from her waistline.
Christmas Lights World Record Reclaimed In Oz A family have broken the world record for the number of Christmas lights put up on a home - for the second time. The Richards family, of Canberra, Australia, have installed 502,165 lights around their house and garden. David Richards, a barrister, started work on stringing the 48km of wires around his property in early October. He had previously held the world record with 330,000 lights in 2011, but lost it last year to a family in New York. The mammoth display, which is expected to be seen by tens of thousands of visitors, has been erected to raise money for a children's charity. But Mr Richards told the Canberra Times part of his motivation for spending almost every weekend working on the project was to reclaim the record. The family from New York had only managed 15,000 more than the Richards' previous record last year, so he felt it was an easy target to achieve. Mr Richards, a father-of-three, told the newspaper: ''It was sort of a reason to do it again, and they didn't break it by very much. ''I thought 500,000 was a nice, round number so I decided to go all out because I may never do it again.'' A representative from Guinness World Records visited the house confirmed the feat. The display has proved so popular, one couple even got married under it. Patrick Cormac became hitched to Mr Richards' cousin Luana Marriott at the house under a blanket of white lights. He said: "It was amazing." Mr Richards said most of his neighbours supported the display, but some had not spoken to him since the last record was set. He said he bought all the lights himself but was unwilling to reveal the cost. The additional cost to his electricity bill however - an extra ÂŁ1,400 a month - is being picked up by a green energy company.

If you’re not cruising on the lakes in Co. Fermanagh or fishing, here’s a selection of other things to visit or things to do. 1. Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest... Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940. 2. Drive near Monea Castle... On the right-hand side, you can see a photo taken near Monea Castle. County Fermanagh is still overall quite rural and has got quite a lot of forests, green fields and lakes. I thought this view is both nice and representative of this county, despite the grey sky... 3. Visit Enniskillen Town... Enniskillen (from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann meaning "Ceithleann's island") is the County town in County Fermanagh. It is located
almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It has a population of approximately 11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part of the town, crossed by River Erne. 4. Visit the buttermarket of Enniskillen... The buttermarket is an area of Enniskillen, which has been converted into an Irish art and craft centre, specialised in sale and promotion of Irish and European craft products (paintings, sculptures, vases etc.). There you'll also be able to meet local artists. 5. Visit Enniskillen Castle... Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century, it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site now houses 2 museums.

nniskillen is an easy shopping town for visitors to find their way around because it is effectively a one street town. While many town centres have been largely lost to multi trading, Enniskillen town Centre has been very successful in holding on to a large number of local family owned businesses. AVENA SATIVA FOR CHRISTMAS STRESS The mere thought of starting to think about Christmas preparations is enough to stress many people out. The plant extract Avena Sativa acts as a strengthening tonic for the nervous system at times of extra stress and tension in our lives and is the perfect antidote for an overwrought mind in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas. Avena Sativa might just provide that all essential help that many need at this time of year. CO Q10 FOR CHRISTMAS ENERGY CO Q10 is a nutrient that plays a vital role in the production of energy within every cell of the body. It increases oxygenation of the brain and heart, aids circulation throughout the body, stimulates immunity and generally boosts energy. The run up to Christmas is a busy time for all of us and is enough to zap the energy from many. CO Q 10 may well provide that boost of “get up and go” whenever it appears to have “got up and gone! “ MILK THISTLE FOR THE CHRISTMAS HANGOVER Most of us who drink consume more alcohol over Christmas than at any other time of year. And increased alcohol can take its toll – especially on the poor liver! Milk thistle is well documented for its beneficial effect on the liver. This herb helps the liver to regenerate itself by stimulating the production of new liver cells. It is also a potent antioxidant which helps to protect the liver from the damage caused by toxins such as alcohol. (People on drug medication, which requires careful blood level monitoring, are best to avoid milk thistle. This includes
warfarin and other anticoagulant medication, epilepsy and anticonvulsive medication. Milk thistle is not recommended for long term use but should be taken instead in the short term over a couple of months.) FRANKINCENSE-A REALLY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS GIFT The Bible tells us that frankincense was one of the gifts brought by the three kings to the stable in Bethlehem and it plays an important role in many church ceremonies. The fragrance of frankincense has a great space cleansing effect and it induces on the mind a sense of deep calm. Burning this oil in your home will help create a very welcoming and calming atmosphere for both you and your Christmas guests. Nuala is a pharmacist registered with the pharmaceutical society of N. Ireland. She chooses to work within the field of Natural health and may be contacted at Natures Choice Health shop in Enniskillen.

Enniskillen the Island County Town of Fermanagh THE Watergate at Enniskillen CastleEnniskillen is the County Town of Fermanagh, located almost exactly in the Centre of the County on the natural island which separates the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. Enniskillen is home to a population of approximately 11,500, by far the largest settlement in the County. The busy Main Street of Enniskillen with the Townhall at the top of the hillEnniskillen town centre is firmly built along the long,
narrow Main St, which actually changes name six times along its length! This gives Enniskillen a real sense of bustle and life as well as imbuing the shops with their own unique character. High Street Stores sit comfortably beside small independent traders, creating a special atmosphere for the place. One of the key images that a visitor to Enniskillen may take home with them is the proximity of the Lough to the town. Moorings just outside the town centre
certainly ease the pressure for parking spaces and add a continental feel to the town. As one would expect, Enniskillen is a retail centre for the County, and beyond, and a lively hub of activities, events and things to do throughout the year. For visitors to County Fermanagh and Enniskillen as well as local folk planning their free time, the following links should help you find out What's Happening in Enniskillen Fermanagh District Councils What's On/Events section has a comprehensive up-to-date list of all events, exhibitions, etc Bars & Clubs When the sun goes down, Enniskillen gets its second wind. Neighborhood bars and pubs are popular, of course, but whatever your inclination - sitting at the bar relaxing with a pint of the 'black stuff', savouring a glass of pinot noir, or enjoying an expresso - be sure to chat with whoever happens to be nearby ... you may make a new friend or a valuable business contact. Our guide includes the hottest Enniskillen Restaurants, Cafés, Clubs and Bars including the most popular cosy 'hole-in-the-wall' spots.

alway City is a thriving, bohemian, cultural city. Along with being a popular seaside destination with beautiful beaches and long winding promenade, it also has a buzzing cosmopolitan city centre. The city is a joy to explore with its labyrinthine cobbled streets, colourful shop facades and busy café/ bar culture. The city is also well known for its many festivals throughout the year with huge crowds gathering for the annual Galway Arts Festival, Races and numerous other events. Old Ireland is present too with turf fires and traditional music featuring in many pubs to compliment your enjoyment of a well earned pint of Guinness. Take an evening stroll along the promenade and watch the sunset over Galway Bay or watch the
salmon fishermen in the River Corrib from the perfect vantage point of the Salmon Weir Bridge Whether its drama, traditional music, late night clubs or simply soaking up the vibe on the bustling city streets, you’ll find plenty to do at night in Galway. The Town Hall Theatre is the best option for seeing a visiting production company’s latest dramatic performance. There are many nightclubs dotted around Eyre Square. Alternatively walk down Shop street to Latin Quarter near Quay Street and you’ll find plenty of old world bars where you can sit by a turf fire and join in the craic. A welcome escape... Time passes easily when you stop by the Salmon Weir Bridge and
The Market Galway's famous bustling market has been trading in Church lane by St. Nicholas' Church in the centre of the city for literally centuries. You will find hundreds of stalls selling fresh produce and locally produced crafts. There's a great variety of food available, Madras curry, Yummy Crepes, Japanese Sushi, and mouth-watering handmade cookies among many others ... or you can buy the ingredients for a delicious gourmet picnic. Many people come to the market to chat as well as to shop and it's a good place to meet local artisans and hear local issues discussed. The market is open Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 8am to 6pm and Sundays 12 noon to 6pm. The Christmas Market runs every day from 9am to 6pm between the 14 & 24 December with lots of homemade Christmas foodstuffs and a lovely atmosphere with all the decorated stalls lit with
mainly battery powered lights and candles. Spanish Arch & Medieval Walls Framing the river east of Wolfe Tone Bridge, the Spanish Arch is thought to be an extension of Galway's medieval walls. The arch appears to have been designed as a passageway through which ships entered the city to unload goods, such as wine and brandy from Spain. Today it reverberates to the beat of bongo drums, and the lawns and riverside form a gathering place for locals and visitors on any sunny day. Many watch kayakers manoeuvre over the minor rapids of the River Corrib. Although a 1651 drawing of Galway clearly shows its extensive fortifications, depredation by Cromwell and William of Orange and subsequent centuries of neglect saw the walls almost completely… Eyre Square In the Galway city centre, there is a square public park. The plot was officially presented to the city in 1710 by Mayor Edward Eyre, from whom the park originally took its name. In 1965, the square was officially renamed "John F. Kennedy Memorial Park". There is a memorial to President
John F. Kennedy on the spot where he addressed the people of Galway on 29 June 1963 shortly before his assassination in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963. Despite the official name change, the park is still mostly referred to as Eyre Square. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the visit to Galway by President Kennedy. In part, the significance is due to the strong connection between Ireland and the United States as a result of the large number of emigrants. As the first US President of Irish Catholic descent, President Kennedy was a great source of pride for the people of the Republic of Ireland.

Melanie Sykes Cautioned Over Husband Assault
Rapper Watsky Sorry For 'Stupid' Gig Rig Jump
A
rapper who jumped from a lighting rig and injured two people has apologised for his "stupid and wildly irresponsible" stunt. George Watsky climbed a rope ladder before leaping into the crowd at Alexandra Palace in north London during a performance at the Vans Warped Tour. The 30ft fall broke a girl's arm and left another fan in hospital, although Watsky himself escaped with only "nicks, bruises and the shame of endangering the crowd". In a lengthy apology posted to his Facebook page, the musician said: "The jump was not awesome, it was not badass and it was not ballsy. "It turned what should have been a great day for the people who got hurt into a nightmare. "It was stupid and wildly irresponsible, plain and simple." Video of Watsky's jump has already been viewed more than 180,000 times on YouTube. The stunt was described as "pretty idiotic", "dumb" and "definitely stupid" by some users,
although many of his 200,000 fans on Facebook expressed their support for the star following his apology. Conceding that it was "extremely lucky" no one was more seriously injured, Watsky wrote: "Putting your own body on the line is one thing, but putting other people in harm's way is inexcusable." He said he would not be cancelling any of his forthcoming tour dates but insisted he "will not be jumping off anything". "I am deeply sorry and I promise to learn from this mistake," he added. Watsky said he spent six hours waiting at the hospital while the injured man was seen by doctors and planned to return to the ward to apologise to him. The artist, who is originally from San Francisco but now lives in Los Angeles, describes himself as a "versatile lyricist who switches between silly and serious, technically complex and simply heartfelt". His self-titled hip hop track Watsky reached number seven on a specialist iTunes chart in 2010.
OJ Simpson Denied New Las Vegas Trial
O
J Simpson faces at least four more years in prison after a judge rejected his bid for a new trial in his Las Vegas armed robbery and kidnapping conviction. Simpson claimed his lawyers in the original trial were incompetent and botched his defence. "All grounds in the petition lack merit and, consequently, are denied," Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell said in her ruling. The former football star plans
to appeal the ruling to the Nevada Supreme Court. "We're confident that when we get to the right court we'll get relief because he deserves relief, because he didn't get a fair trial," Simpson's lawyer Patricia Palm said. Simpson was found guilty of kidnapping, armed robbery and other charges in what he said was an attempt to retrieve memorabilia and personal items from two sports collectibles dealers in a casino hotel room. He was sentenced to nine to 33 years
in Nevada state prison. A board granted parole on some convictions in July, but the 66year-old must serve at least four more years locked up. He is imprisoned at Lovelock Correctional Center. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 in the stabbing deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. The Los Angeles case was dubbed the "trial of the century".Years later, a jury in Miami acquitted him of all charges in a Florida road rage case.
T
elevision presenter Melanie Sykes has been arrested and cautioned over an assault on her husband. The 43-year-old mother of two spent a night in
custody before admitting to the offence and accepting a caution. She and Jack Cockings, 27, who met on Twitter, were married in May. A Scotland Yard spokesman said officers were called on Tuesday night to a residential property in Hampstead after reports of an assault. A spokesman for Sykes would not comment. Mr Cockings did not need hospital treatment. Sykes, who first found fame in an advert for Boddingtons beer, met Mr Cockings online where he tweets as @bespokespartan after he asked her out on a date. His Twitter page now appears to have been deactivated. In an interview earlier this year, Sykes said: "'There are people who will always be cynical about my relationship with Jack because of how we got together. "But he makes me happier than I've ever been and if I'm happy, my boys are happy, it's a big circle - and that's all that matters." Sykes has appeared on shows including Let's Do Lunch with Gino and Mel, The Big Breakfast and Today with Des and Mel. She also had a stint on BBC Radio 2 with Alan Carr. She has two children from her marriage to Italian actor Daniel Caltagirone, which ended in 2009.
Now Compilation Albums Celebrate 30 Years
I
conic compilation album Now is marking 30 years since it first pulled together the day's biggest pop hits. Now That’s What I Call Music 1 hit shops on November 28, 1983 and featured 30 hit singles from that year on double vinyl and cassette. It featured artists such as Phil Collins, Culture Club, Duran Duran, UB40, Men at Work, and Kajagoogoo. Katy Perry song Roar is the first track on Now 86, which was released last week. Record producer Pete Waterman told Sky News: "All my artists appeared on the Now albums. Every one of them. "The Now albums for us as an independent record company were a fantastic extra source of income. "When your record had stopped selling, you would put them on the Now album and they would give you another 25-30% income. "But there was a lot of politics involved. You basically had to be in the top five to get on the album but it became a fabulous bartering tool. "They wanted your big artists so we would say 'well you can have that one but only if you also take this one', so it was a good tool for getting new artists, who might have only been in the top 20, another broader field." The music industry might have changed
enormously since the 1980s but the appeal of the Now brand has been consistent. This summer's Now 85 is the biggest selling Now album ever, with Daft Punk's Get Lucky and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines on the track list. Artist album sales are currently down 7.2% on this time last year. Singles are also struggling - but sales of compilation albums are up 7.7% year on year. For some it might be an unexpected trend but the managing director of Now Music, Peter Duckworth, says consumers want popular music to be curated. "In an era of downloads, when people said a few years ago that it's the end of the compilation because people can now choose their tracks from iTunes, they've been proved wrong. "Now has gone from strength to strength in the digital era because whilst you can buy every track on iTunes or listen to them on Spotify, people want some guidance and help. "If you are faced with 15 million tracks to choose from, Now helps you choose." The inspiration for the name Now That's What I Call Music came from a 1920s advertisement for Danish Bacon. The pig became a mascot on the early sleeves of the Now albums and still makes the occasional appearance.

Import figures show there is a huge demand for cars U
SED car imports are steadily racking up the numbers. So far 46,583 have been brought in -- 10,000 more than this time last year. It is safe to say they will top 50,000 before December 31. There is huge demand for the likes of the Ford Focus (2,764), Audi A4 (2,513), Volkswagen Passat (2,443) and Golf (2,000), according to Motorcheck.ie figures. Which makes it all the more perplexing why the Government rejected efforts to increase new-car sales at home (remember swappage?) where it would get a lot more tax revenue. The Department of Finance told Independent Motors it didn't believe there would be enough demand for new cars - even though they would effectively be €4,000 less expensive when the proposed VRT rebate and dealer incentives were included.

he Ford Tourneo Connect is the first compact people mover to be awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent crash test authority, Euro NCAP. The Ford Tourneo Connect achieved a score of 94% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, and 83% overall. The maximum rating achieved by the Ford Tourneo Connect follows the first-in-class, five-star safety rating for the larger Ford Tourneo Custom people mover, which remains the only vehicle in its class to earn five stars. “The Tourneo Connect gives active families the space and versatility they need to live life to the full,” said Stephen Lesh, Tourneo Connect chief program engineer, Ford of Europe. “This significant endorsement from Euro NCAP shows that we know how important safety is for our customers too.” “The comprehensive package which includes a driver-set speed assistance system, standard seatbelt reminders on the front seats and the lowspeed autonomous braking system Active City Stop, makes the Tourneo Connect an attractive offering for safety-minded drivers,” said Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general, Euro NCAP.

Foal prices up 42pc, but still losing money
F
alling foal numbers and the introduction of elite sales specifically targeting show-jumping buyers resulted in a 42pc increase in the average auction price of foals in 2013, new research has shown. The average price of foals sold at auction in Cavan and Goresbridge this year was €1,577/hd, according to Teagasc equine specialist Declan McArdle. But when the results of elite foal sales such as the Irish Breeders Classic sale and the Cavan Elite Foal sale were included, the average sale price increased to €2,242/hd, a hike of 42pc, delegates at the Teagasc National Equine Conference in Tullamore were told. The average price of a foal sold in the
elite sales was €5,239, more than three times the average of the foal sold in the non-elite sales. Mr McArdle said the introduction of elite sales had brought breeders and buyers together and was a successful template that should be followed in future years. Falling foal numbers were also a factor in the upturn in foal sales for 2013, he added. Sport horse foal numbers fell to just over 5,000 in 2013 -- just half of the 10,424 sport horse foals registered in 2008 -- as breeders ratchet back on foal production. Despite the increase in foal prices, the vast majority of foals sold at auction are not capable of returning any profit.
The cash costs of producing a foal to weaning stage amount to €1,651/hd, according to Teagasc research. This means the average foal selling for €1,577/hd at normal sales actually costs his breeder €74. But the picture is bleaker than that, because the €1,651/hd does not include the cost of labour, land or stud fee for the foal. Mr McArdle told the conference that, assuming an average stud fee of €1,200, only the top 20pc of foals sold in Ireland this year would have yielded any return for their breeders. Teagasc , Horse Sport Ireland and the RDS are drafting a strategic plan for the sport horse sector in Ireland, which is due to be published in 2014.

Deutz-Fahr drives into high-power zone with top-end
O
ffering operator comfort, fuel efficiency and low operating costs, these tractors will be of interest to top-end contractors and benefit from a style which has been developed and refined in collaboration with another Italian firm, Giugiaro Design. Deutz-Fahr are pitching the new models as being able to provide as strong performances when working with big, power-sapping ploughs or deep subsoilers as they do when powering high capacity cultivator drills. Power is provided by Deutz's TCD 7.8 litre twin turbo six cylinder engines that are compliant with Tier 4 final emission regulations and employ four valves per cylinder. These engines are
turbocharged and intercooled and use an integrated electronic control for their common rail injection system. A large fuel tank capacity means uninterrupted days can be spent in the field, while a new electronically controlled cooling system ensures that maximum efficiency and low fuel consumption is achieved. PRECISION Fast reactions with safety and precision are the characteristics of the new Terramatic continuously variable transmission. Also helping to reduce fuel consumption is a PTO package which offers three speeds of 540E/1000/1000E. Conditions on the road and

in the field change continuously, but Deutz-Fahr claims the Nine series has got the driving dynamics to cope, thanks to its front axle suspension system. For stopping the tractor there is the power brake braking system which requires only a small input to bring the tractor safely to a halt. The brake department also includes an electronic parking brake, while disc brakes on the front axle in the 60kph version make an important contribution to braking performance. The hydraulic system employs a 210l/min loadsensing pump operating at 200 bar and up to seven
auxiliary distributors, of which four provide a maximum flow of 150l/min and three with a flow of up to 100l/min. A 90l hydraulic system oil tank is independent of the transmission oil reservoir and as a result, prevents dust or grime entering via the auxiliary distributors. Maximum lifting capacity at the ball end of the quick fit rear arms is rated at 12,000kg. A newly designed cab further enhances the Nine series tractors with a single piece windshield providing good all-round visibility. Additional options include a 12" touchscreen monitor and a GPS navigation system.

with very little acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passer-by so you might want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or threesecond bursts around you. Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made. Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then later throw in a third... you get the picture. This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear.
H
EARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional.

medications to treat any mild problems you may have with hearing before these worsen.
Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill, and irritating noises every day such as power tools in your workplace or roadworks are detrimental to your hearing. Avoid them at all cost. Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose & throat) Check-ups Add visiting an EENT doctor to your list of bi-annual check-ups alongside your usual ones, like visits to the dentist and general medical check-ups. This helps maintain all your senses, not just hearing. EENTs can give you preventive
Vitamins and Medication There are four vitamins and medications that have been tested and proven to help in the maintenance of hearing. These haven't been noted to significantly enhance a person's hearing acuity, but they have been known to prevent the deterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg a day), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day). Sound Source Location Exercise Here is the first drill for sharpening your hearing. This helps your ear's directional sense and requires a partner. Get some small noisemaker like a horn or even a small radio speaker. Go to a large room
