ecuring the 2014 All-Ireland Fleadh is a major boost to Sligo and the greater region’s economy. There will be tangible benefits to surpass anything the city has gained in the past. The All-Ireland Fleadh is billed as the biggest traditional music festival in the world and the Irish traditional music body, Comhaltas, gave the nod to Sligo at the end of January this year. The fleadh began in 1951 as a competition to set standards in Irish traditional music. It has grown into a 10-day carnival of parades, workshops, sessions and street entertainment which attracts thousands of musicians and traditional music lovers from all over the world. As one can imagine, the atmosphere will be really electric and already Sligo is eagerly anticipating it. There will be events for families: drama, theatre, arts, food, crafts, heritage, tours of the town, tours of the county. The event is worth about 40m euro to the host venue, and is expected to bring about 300,000 visitors. Each of the 600-plus hotel rooms in Sligo, along with the 200 or so B & B rooms, are expected to be fully booked out. It is anticipated that the surrounding towns such as Carrick-on-Shannon, Bundoran and Ballina will also attract visitors that may be unable to get accommodation in Sligo. Past hosts of the event include Tullamore, Cavan and, more recently, Londonderry. Each of these towns really prospered and attracted over 300,000 visitors each year to the event.

Sligo’s Radisson Blu plays host to Active Retirement groups
“Enjoying the read” were Betty Bennett (left) and Helena O’Rourke from Clontarf ARA at the special event in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Sligo.
guests supplying free copies of the very popular locally-produced magazine. The groups were treated to a Ceili and Sing-Song with Mick Shannon (Joe’s father) and friends, in addition to a Set and Social Dancing Workshop with Oliver Fleming. Those who were still in good shape the following morning were treated to a bowling demonstration by Eric Hamilton, who runs bowling weekends all over the country. The ARA members were loud in their praise for Sligo and the Radisson who certainly showed their expertise and professionalism in dealing with such a lively and somewhat eclectic group of senior citizens, many of whom will, undoubtedly, return to experience more of what the Yeats County and the north-west has to offer. (For more news and pictures on this special event look out for this month’s issue of Mature Living, out shortly).

It will complement the splendid reputation for traditional music which Sligo already enjoys with so many renowned performers past and present from the Yeats county. The county’s unrivalled scenery and hospitality will be much appreciated by the thousands of visitors. The people of Sligo can organise and can hold such a large event with over 300,000 people in attendance and do that successfully where everyone has a good time. The facilities are definitely here, the bedrooms are here, the entertainment is here, and as a community we should welcome this bonanza with open arms. App will help Suicidal Youth
A
N innovative smartphone app. which will assist young people who are suicidal or are suffering from depression was launched by the G.R.A.S.P Life Foundation in the Clyde Court Hotel Dublin recently. The app. was created by Greystones, Co. Wicklow student Adam Harris, with support from Bray Lions Club, and is designed to enable young people in any part of the country to instantly access helplines and support services in their area. It has the backing of major organisations providing these services including Aware, Console, SOSAD, SOS and ‘Let’s Get Together’ (Cork). Adam has also won the Lions International All Ireland Young Ambassador award and will represent Bray Lions Club in the UK final in Birmingham next month. Speaking at the launch, Claire McTiernan, G.R.A.S.P Life Foundation, said that Ireland has the fourth highest rate of youth suicide in the EU and 65% of those who contact G.R.A.S.P are under 25 years of age. ‘The negative effect of technology has been well-documented in recent times. However, this app is an
example of how we can benefit from technology in helping those who are vulnerable or in crisis within our society." G.R.A.S.P for Life Foundation, she added, is founded on the premise that the
ANDY’S
educational aspect of suicide coupled with crisis intervention is vital in the prevention of suicide. Introducing the app. Adam Harris, G.R.A.S.P Life Foundation App. Coordinator, said: ‘Youth mental health and in particular youth suicide, is the foremost issue of our generation, indeed it seems almost impossible to find someone who has not been affected or touched by these issues in some way. This is why I decided to try to help people of my own age who may be feeling low or are worried about someone close to them. The app will help to inform people about the support services available across the country’. John Buckley of the youth affairs website SpunOut.ie said that mental health ‘is something we all have’. ‘At times it's fragile and needs support. It's alright not to feel ok. We need to foster a culture amongst young people whereby they see that it's ok to reach out for support and when they do that the services they need are there.’ The new app. was designed by Michael Pierce with graphic designer Donal Campbell creating the supporting promotional material. To download the app from a smartphone go to the app.store and search for G.R.A.S.P

Inspirational Ian’s life recalled on Croagh Patrick ALMOST 500 people turned out for a memorial climb for the late adventurer/mountain climber Ian McKeever at Croagh Patrick on Saturday last. Maybe it was appropriate that the event was helped by gentle winds and sunshine as the life of the brave adventurer, cut short by lightening on Kilmanjaro, was recalled. Many carried photos and other mementos of the dead climber, who has special links with the holy mountain having climbed it 35 times in 80 hours for charity some years ago.
There were so many photos taken in far-flung places that the mountain top oratory for a time resembled a mini-photo gallery. Fr. John Kenny, parish priest of Partry, celebrated the memorial Mass. Afterwards he described the ceremony as “most joyous” and marvelled at the turnout. He said the large numbers were testament to “a great motivator and inspirational figure. The main organiser of the event, Matt Loughrey, an inveterate climber himself, said the turnout was testament
to Mr. McKeever’s spirit. He recalled that, on what turned out to be their final meeting last year, they had a drink together at The Tavern in Murrisk. “We talked about everything under the sun except mountain-climbing”, Mr. Loughrey said. “He was a humble guy, but well worth listening to”. Paul Devaney, who is undertaking the Seven Day Summit Challenge, took part in the hike for Mr. McKeever, who he said had supported and encouraged him.

Sligo Student Awarded 2010 Avaya Prize SHANE Tuohy, from Sligo, a final-year Electronic and Computer Engineering student at NUI Galway, was recently awarded the 2010 Avaya prize for best final year project in the discipline of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. The winning project involved the development of software to automatically analyse footage from a digital camera placed in a car in order to calculate the distance to other vehicles on the oad. The project was completed in co-operation with Valeo Vision Systems (formerly Connaught Electronics Ltd.), currently one of the world leaders in automotive camera systems. Shane, a native of Strandhill Co. Sligo, expects to commence a PhD in the area of automotive camera systems in September, in conjunction with Valeo. Dr Martin Glavin, Course Director of the B.E. Electronic and Computer Engineering at NUI Galway and Academic Supervisor of the winning project, commented: “With higher traffic densities and higher average speeds, it is increasingly difficult for drivers to be aware of every other road user, be they pedestrian or vehicle. The use of cameras will allow the vehicle systems to become more aware of their surroundings and hence they will be able to warn the driver of potential collisions. This project is an important stepping stone towards a system that can accurately and reliably detect other road users and ultimately save lives. Shane worked very closely with post-graduate researchers in the Connaught Automotive Research (CAR) group and our industrial partners in Valeo Vision Systems to deliver a project which was technically of the highest standard but also of great commercial potential”. Dr Glavin and Dr Edward Jones, NUI Galway Lecturer, are Directors of the Connaught Automotive Research group at NUI Galway. This research group specialises in the development of in-car camera systems to detect other road users, with the ultimate goal of saving lives by making the cars we drive more intelligent. Dr Michael Keane, Senior R&D Manager at Avaya, added: “Avaya was proud to continue with the sponsorship of the Avaya prize in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at NUI Galway. Shane’s project is of the highest technical standard and is an excellent example of the type of innovation needed in our graduate population to continue to drive the development of the ‘smart economy’ in Ireland”.

January was dullest month for 50 years
I
F you thought you were down in the dumps during January then maybe you had every good reason to feel depressed. Like elsewhere in Ireland the north-west is badly in need of some sunlight. The month of January was miserable, wet and dull, with more rain and less sunshine than usual, the Met Office has con-
firmed. Some parts of the country endured the bleakest January in almost half a century, with below-average levels of sunshine recorded at weather stations nationwide. And all that sunshine deprivation and cloud is not good for us – we need the rays to maintain our vitamin count and to ward off the form of depression known as SAD (seasonal affective dis-
order). But sightings of that fiercely burning star have been few and far between since Christmas. In the west of Ireland, Knock braved its dullest January for 16 years while Claremorris had to put up with nearly double its average rainfall for January. Dublin was particularly drab, according to Met Eireann's station at Casement Aerodrome, with less than 25 hours of sunshine during the entire month – making it the capital's dullest January since 1964. Most parts of the country also experienced more rainfall than normal for the time of year, with the exception of pockets of the north-west and the midlands. Dublin was again among the worst-hit areas, with incessant downpours making it the capital's rainiest January – based on the number of days it rained – since 1980 and its wettest in five years, based on the amount of rainfall. It rained 26 out of the 31 days in Kerry. Weather stations in the midlands and the west also reported the wettest January in five years. But at least we escaped the heavy falls of snow and floods that afflicted our nearest neighbor and, compared with the severe cold of two years ago maybe we don’t have too much to complain about. Seamus Walsh of Met Eireann said there were a "few very cold days" in the middle of the month but while severe weather threatened, it didn't materialise.
Garda Inspector says resources in Castlebar are adequate People throughout the north-west, despite assurances from Minister Shatter and others, are, undoubtedly, concerned about protection, particularly in rural areas, following the recent shut-down of so many garda stations. In the meantime, a senior has rebuffed claims there is not enough gardaí in Castlebar and claims that they have ‘adequate resources’ to tackle crime in the county town. The issue of garda numbers in Castlebar and its environs was raised at the town council’s Joint Policing Meeting last week. Councillors claimed that there was an increase in crime while there was also a reduction of gardaí in the town. However, Inspector Joe McKenna revealed that while there had been an increase in burglaries in 2012, there was a reduction in thefts from shops and in public order offences. He said he could not provide the exact figures, but stressed that people were being prosecuted and that he believed the Gardaí had the resources to do their job. “I prosecuted in Castlebar District Court last week and it was a full day with every type of crime. I have to say there is great work being done in the town, and people are being caught, prosecuted and punished. Castlebar is a big town with a lot of people in it. The resources we have are stretched due to cutbacks, but it’s the same with other agencies. I still believe we have adequate resources to tackle the problems in Castlebar,” he said. Inspector McKenna explained that he was stationed in the town from 2002 to 2009. He said that problems in certain parts of the town during that time had
now been resolved. He said that the gardaí had to work within the law and urged the people to continue to co-operate. “We are a civilised society,” he said. “We need to go through the due process and work within the law. We may know who is committing a crime but we still have to go through the process. We want people to feel safe in their homes … and we will work with the resources we have to do our utmost to deal with any issues.” While acknowledging the some garda stations were closing, Inspector McKenna said the garda had not left the area and will continue to serve the area and provide a service to the community. The issue of crime in Castlebar was raised by Labour councillor Harry Barrett, who said he was getting a lot of complaints regarding shop lifting and bag snatching. While acknowledging the issue
of resources, Cllr Barrett said the people of the town wanted to see gardaí on patrol in the streets to make them feel safer. Cllr Blackie Gavin commented that an 80-year-old woman who was living in the centre of town had a window broken on New Year’s Eve and was living in fear. He said that the gardaí could not be everywhere and called for a text-alert system to be put in place. Cllr Frank Durcan proposed that the JPC write to the Minister for Justice expressing its concern regarding the reduction in gardaí. Cllr Therese Ruane also raised concerns regarding the closure of rural garda stations and called for an end to the embargo on the recruitment of gardaí. Insp McKenna also asked business people not to keep money in their floats, as he said it was being targeted. He asked them to bring money home or lodge it.

MEP Harkin calls for special regional status I
reland North & West MEP Marian Harkin today (29 January) called on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to do “everything in his power to gain support at European Council level for additional funding for the Border, Midland and Western (BMW) region”. Speaking following a Brussels meeting with BMW Regional Assembly Director Gerry Finn, Harkin emphasised that “European funding has played a vital role in the economic, infrastructural and community development of the region, but without strong lobbying from the Irish government, there is now a real possibility that the BMW region could lose almost half of its EU support for the 2014-2020 period”. The Independent MEP explained that “the European Com-
mission in 2011 reclassified the BMW as a ‘more developed region’ under EU Cohesion funding plans for the 2014-2020 budget”. “This classification used the reference period 2007-2009 to determine that the region’s GDP is above 90% of the EU average. However, there are robust statistics which indicate that the actual 2009 figure is below 90% and is moreover likely to decline in the period to 2012. “In other words, the current classification ignores the unfortunate – but nonetheless realistic – picture, wherein the BMW has experienced a severe economic downturn, with increasing unemployment and a raft of new challenges” “As a result,” said Harkin, “it is imperative that Ireland fol-
low the precedent set by a number of EU Member States who argued for – and gained – additional funding for specific regional cases”. “Portugal, Cyprus, Malta and Greece all made the case that the purpose of cohesion funding is to target those regions which most require specific aids in their development, and the BMW region more than fulfils the criteria used by these countries”. “Achieving such a ‘special allocation’ for the BMW region is logical, appropriate and absolutely necessary if the EU is genuine in its conviction that cohesion funding should reduce regional disparities in terms of income, wealth and opportunities,” the Ireland North & West MEP concluded.
Mayo LEADER probe referred to garda fraud unit THE Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and the Standards in Public Office Commission have been supplied with the findings of a top level investigation into alleged governance issues at a Mayo Leader Company, Environment Minister Phil Hogan has revealed. The Minister was responding to a parliamentary question from Mayo Deputy Michelle Mulhern and he said the results of the probe at Mayo North East Leader Partnership will now be subject to the relevant processes in the policing and monitoring bodies in question. He stated: “The report is also under consideration in my own department. It is critical that the funds delivered through the Leader elements of the regional development programme (RDP) are managed in an efficient and effective way. “The suspension of project approvals in the Mayo North East Partnership will remain in place until I am satisfied that such approvals can proceed. “While we must ensure correct and proper management and implementation of the Leader elements of the RDP from both a regulatory and value for money perspective, my department's objective is to conclude the processes associated with this investigation with a view to reinstating access to RDP funds to the citizens of Mayo North East at the earli-
est possible opportunity while ensuring regulatory compliance, value for money and maximum impact for the people of North Mayo. “On foot of recent meetings with the Department of Agriculture, the managing authority for the RDP, my department is currently developing an action Plan that will provide the necessary assurances in these regards.” Minister Hogan explained the final report had initially been provided to the Department of Agriculture which subsequently reported the findings to the European Commission and the external accreditation auditors, Deloitte. The Mayo deputy also sought a breakdown of the total amount of rural development funds relating to the current round of Leader funding that was ring-fenced to be distributed by Mayo North East Leader Partnership and the amount of the said funding that has been drawn down to date. Minister Hogan said it was originally allocated €10,751,894 for the delivery of Axis 3 and 4 of the rural development programme (20072013). Implementation of the Leader elements of the RDP commenced in 2009 and to up to December 31 last, the Mayo organisation had registered overall expenditure of €4,388,947, which included both project and administration expenditure.

Second annual Mayo Choral Festival is confirmed for next May PREPARATIONS are at an advanced stage for the second Mayo International Choral Festival taking place from May 23 to 26 next. Open to competing and non-competing choirs, already choirs from the US, Finland, Scotland, England and Germany have expressed interest, in addition to choirs from Mayo, and all over Ireland. The festival chairman and founding member, Edward Horkan, expressed delight with the success of last year’s success when 33 choirs took part. “We have now forged links with many international choirs, organisations and adjudicators. By having some of the world’s top adjudicators means, we can be seriously considered by choirs when they choose what festival to travel to next,” he explained. Mr. Horkan stressed it is not all about competition as non-competing choirs are equally welcome. The 2013 festival was launched Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, who commended the festival chairman, Edward Horkan and the committee. He was delighted to see that the festival was part of the Gathering 2013 and he wished the festival every success. Festival director, Declan Durcan, said Mayo has really embraced the concept of the only county-wide choral festival in Ireland. He elaborated: “It’s a big challenge to host a festival in several locations spread out all over the county. But when the communities are behind you, it makes it a lot easier.
“One of the other key components is the support of the choirs from Mayo and this has been astonishing. “We now also have a festival administrator employed to assist us. It bodes well for future years. We are indebted to our volunteers, sponsors and supporters, LEADER, Mayo County Council, Failte Ireland and the Gathering 2013, Mayo businesses, local newspapers and websites, and our national, regional and local radio partners, RTÉ Lyricfm as well as Midwest Radio and Castlebar Community Radio. “We are also very excited about the new ‘on the edge’ aspect, supported by the Gathering 2013, which pertains to Mayo’s location on the edge of Europe, next to the Atlantic ocean, and incorporates the festival fringe events.” One such event is a concert by the renowned Reading Male Voice Choir from England, with director Gwyn Arch MBE, taking place in Castlebar, May 11. Mayo choirs will also perform on the night.

Galway couple celebrate 70 years together
S
taying together in marriage may be coming more difficult all the time. For some it might be considered an endurance test. But one couple in Shantalla; Galway, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, which may very well make them the longest-married couple in the city. Pat and Maureen Burke of Macdara Road, who are in their early nineties, couldn’t party because Pat is currently a patient in University Hospital Galway. But on Wednesday afternoon, the Mayor of Galway, Cllr Terry O’Flaherty visited Pat in the hospital where Maureen and family members had gathered to mark the occasion. The couple were only 22 and 23 respectively when they got married at 7am in St Patrick’s Church seventy years ago last Wednesday, followed by a modest wedding breakfast in the Burke family home in Bettystown. There was no honeymoon in the austere times of the early 1940s and with little work in Galway emigration was the only option despite being in the middle of World War 11. That is how Maureen found herself working in an ammunitions factory in London, having for a short while worked in the woollen mills in Mill Street. Pat was working in the Galway Foundry, where he stayed for 30 years, and once the couple had decided to get married, he bought an engagement ring in Dillons and trusted a friend to deliver it to his bride-tobe in London. Eventually, they secured a newly-built home in Shantalla, where they would raise fourteen children. Sadly, their first born, Dominic, died shortly after birth as did another daughter, Margaret Ann, about ten years later. All of the fourteen, save two (Paddy in Portsmouth in the UK and Josephine in Jer-
sey) live in and around Galway and among those are a set of twins, Martin and Martina. Pat went on to work in the textile factory in Sandy Road until he moved to St Mary’s College, where he worked as a handyman for 17. The couple had great faith and the Rosary was a daily occurrence anytime between 6.30pm and 7pm when whoever was home would kneel down to pray together as a family. In fact, there was a real emphasis on prayer and, in particular, in times of need such as the time their daughter Josephine was very ill in hospital. Pat prayed to the Blessed Martin and she had what the family describe as a miraculous recovery. And that faith has been handed down to the next generation as Pat and Maureen’s son, Paddy, who is in the British Navy, believes it saved him during the Falklands War when the ship he was on was sunk. Pat loves hurling and rugby and still has a fantastic memory of sporting events. Before he went into hospital a few months ago, Pat used to look forward to going to Taaffes Bar in Shop Street every Saturday morning to meet old friends. Though there were many proud moments for the couple, one of their proudest was visiting Arás an Uachtaran and seeing their son Dominic, a member of the Red Cross, getting a President’s Trophy from President Mary McAleese for First Aid. Another huge moment for Maureen was seeing her niece, Catherine Connolly becoming Mayor of the city. Catherine was one of 14 children left orphaned when their mother, Maureen’s beloved sister, Nans, died. The Burkes continue to be a devoted couple – Pat is 93 on Thursday – and their legacy is the rearing of 14 children, who in turn have produced 40 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Activists protest against Shell and €19.6bn profits
T
he news that Shell had recently announced an increase in profit margins has angered a group of of environmental activists and they have staged a protest against the oil and gas giant. The organisation Shell to Sea, which has overseen a long-running campaign against the global energy firm over its plans for a major gas project in Co Mayo, described its latest profit announcement as obscene. Shell revealed it made €19.6bn in profits during 2012. Campaign spokesman Terence Conway said it was clear communities were being exploited for corporate interests. "These obscene profits announced by Shell this week come at the expense of communities and the environment where
Shell operate," Mr Conway said. Protesters waving signs saying "Shell Destroys Communities and Environment" and "Harmful to Local Community" blocked trucks drawing material to a Shell tunnelling compound at Aughoose. Shell in Ireland is the operator of the major Corrib gas project in north Co Mayo. The company has described it as one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever undertaken in the country. According to the energy giant, Ireland currently exports 90% of its gas and Corrib will supply up to 60% of Ireland's gas needs at peak production. Shell to Sea have continually campaigned against the project, claiming it exposes the local community in nearby Erris to unnecessary health, safety and
environmental risks. They have also called on the Government to withdraw its backing of the project and protect communities. "Corrib clearly shows how far the Government will go to serve corporate interests, they continue to put Shell interests before the interests of this community or indeed the whole country," Mr Conway said. He said Garda resources were being wasted to support Shell at a time when they are already stretched enough following the recent closure of 95 Garda stations. The Corrib gas field was discovered in 1996. Partners Shell, Statoil and Canadianowned Vermilion are now 10 years behind the initial target to start generating revenues from the field. Shell now expects gas to flow in late 2014 or early 2015. Campaigner Maura Harrington added: "The Government are still willing to force suffering on the people of Ireland through severe cutbacks, yet at the same time give our oil and gas away to multinational companies such as Shell, with no benefit to country. "It is time for people to demand that this situation is changed." It is understood the cost of developing the Corrib gas field could be four times the initial estimate of 800 million euro at more than 3 billion euro. Around 900 people are employed on the project at present. That number is expected to rise to more than 1,000 in the coming months.
Carrick ladies lose a total of 17 stone
Trainer Siofra o'Connor, Stephanie McTiernan, Trainer Dave Hanly, Michelle Reilly and Mary Faughnan.
FOR three Carrick ladies it’s time for celebration. The Get Fit Challengers: Stephanie McTiernan, Mary Faughnan and Michelle Reilly are an inspiration to everyone.. The three ladies spent the past six months totally transforming their lives, losing weight, getting fit and changing their diet and lifestyle and the results are breath taking! Many have been following the three ladies on their huge transformation, but there were still gasps around The Basement, in Murtagh’s Bar, Carrick-on-Shannon at the weekend when the women were revealed in all their glory. They were hardly recognisable in their new bodies after a make over, beautiful hair styles and stunning dresses. Each of the girls glowed with confidence and their family
and friends were so proud of what their loved ones achieved. It was a tough six months for the ladies who each said they struggled at the very start with some of the challenges presented by Get Fit Trainers Siofra O’Connor and Dave Hanley from D&S Studio. But with sweat, tears and determination the ladies busted through and faced their fears. They lost a combined 17 stone 2 pounds which is 111 bags of sugar! Michelle Reilly from Bornacoola lost an unbelievable 8 stone 8 pounds in six months. The pictures of before and after speak for themselves. Michelle told the Leitrim Observer she was only delighted to “bag all my old clothes and buy new stuff.” She said it was “great to buy cheaper clothes with less material!” Mary Faughnan from Mohill lost an impressive 5 stone 2 pounds. She said she is now buzzing with energy and confidence and is motivated to keep going and achieve her goal weight. Stephanie McTiernan from Drumshanbo shed 3 stone and 5 pounds and advises anyone that they can lose weight “one step at a time.” Despite a struggle and physical challenges at the beginning, Stephanie overcame the issues to get fit and look her best ever! Each of the ladies feel they still have to lose over 2 stone each to reach their target weights, and I think we all believe they can do it! They are going to continue attending Siofra and Dave’s exercise classes and will probably keep up at least one personal training session a week with Dave which they said is essential for “toning.” The toughest challenge for the ladies
in the six months were the sand dunes in Stand Hill, Sligo. They said they were “mountains” that they each struggled with, but the second time they ventured up they reached the top in half the time! Last week the Get Fit trio along with supporters travelled to Westport to climb Croagh Patrick. Even on the morning of the climb they still didn’t think they would be able to complete it, but they did it. So do they actually like exercising now? “Yes” the three chime. They said it is addictive and makes them feel happier, gives them more energy and helps them to get through the day! Advice for anyone wishing to lose weight is to “start now” and “do it for yourself”, they all agreed that it helps to “lose weight in numbers” for support and motivation. They recommend healthy eating with exercise for the ultimate results. Their biggest food sacrifices were sweets, takeaways and fizzy drinks - but they all believe the sacrifice was definitely worth it! Tributes were paid to trainers Siofra and Dave and Gwen Buggy the nutritionist as well as all the sponsors who gave prizes and helped out with the Big Reveal Night as well as Murtagh’s Bar who hosted the event. €820 was raised on the night for ‘A Little Lifetime Foundation’ which provides information and support to bereaved parents and families. D&S Studio are having a Free Trial Day in their Studio on Park Lane, Carrick-onShannon with 20 minutes taster classes in Spin, Bodytone, Trampoline and Kettleballs on Saturday, February 16 from 124pm. Disgust in Roscommon over Minister Reilly’s decisions MINISTER James Reilly is under fire once more over revelations about this upgrading and downgrading decisions with the regard to hospitals. The Minister for Health has been accused of “bending the rules to suit his colleagues”. The accusation comes after it emerged that he sanctioned funding to upgrade hospitals in the constituencies of two cabinet minister while downgrading the A&E at Roscommon County Hospital. Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act showed that James Reilly approved over €20 million for the emergency units at Wexford and Kilkenny hospitals in 2011, which was at the time he moved ahead with plans to close the A&E at Roscommon County Hospital. The documents also showed that the improvements to the emergency departments in Wexford General Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital Kilkenny were announced by Ministers Brendan Howlin and Phil Hogan before the HSE Board was aware of the proposed changes. Deputy Denis Naughten said last week that the news cast doubt on Government’s comments that the HSE was responsible for all decision-making. “What this does show is that clearly the Minister for Health is prepared to bend the rules to suit himself and cabinet colleagues. Clearly in relation to other A&E’s the ministers could go and make the announcements and get the approval afterwards and clearly there was an agenda in the HSE for the closure of the A&E Department in Roscommon. Fianna Fáil Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher has accused the Minister for Health and other ministers of seeing the HSE capital budget as a slush fund for electoral gain.

Google settles French media dispute Google will help French news organisations increase their online advertising revenue and also set up a 60 million euro (ÂŁ52 million) fund to finance digital publishing innovation, settling a dispute over whether the internet giant should pay to display news content in its search results. The agreement, announced by the French government and Google, will give the news organisations access to advertising platforms on the internet search leader. European publishers losing money and readers had asked governments in France, Germany and Italy to make Google pay. The company threatened to stop indexing European news sites, if it was charged for the content. The company said that the settlement means it does not have to pay for "snippets" of news content that appear on a Google search page. France had appointed a mediator to lead negotiations with French publishers and they called the agreement a "happy conclusion". Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt was present at the Elysee Palace with President Francois Hollande to sign the deal after what the president's office said were "intense negotiations". "Our search engine generates billions of clicks each month, and our advertising solutions - in which we have invested billions of dollars - help them make money from that traffic," Mr Schmidt said of the deal on the Google Blog. The commercial agreement will allow media organisations to profit from Google advertising platforms, including AdSense and AdMob for mobile phones. Google sends some six billion clicks per month to publishers around the world representing a big money-making potential by selling advertising next to it and drawing in new readers. Clicking on the ads generates revenue that would be shared. It was not immediately clear how the revenue would be split, but most was expected to go to the French publishers. Meanwhile, Google's stock climbed to a new high as Wall Street's best known indexes also approached record territory. The shares of the internet search leader peaked at 775.32 dollars in afternoon trading, eclipsing the stock's previous record of 774.38 dollars reached in early October. The company, which is based in Mountain View, California, went public at 85 dollars in August 2004. Google's stock has been on the upswing since the company reported its fourthquarter earnings 10 days ago. The results showed Google is still enjoying strong growth in internet advertising.
Sony set to unveil new PlayStation
S
ony is poised to unveil the next PlayStation game console on February 20, a date that would give the Japanese electronics company a head start over Microsoft's expected announcement of an Xbox 360 successor in June. Sony invited journalists to an evening press event in New York City. The company has not said what it plans to show off, but signs indicate that it will be the PlayStation 4. Sony would only say that it "will deliver and speak about the future PlayStation business".
Such a console would follow Nintendo's Wii U, which launched last autumn, and precede Microsoft's next Xbox game console, which is likely to be unveiled in June at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said it is a "super smart" move for Sony to preempt Microsoft. This way, the PlayStation 4 will get the spotlight without much competition. The currently available PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006, a year after the Xbox 360. But Xbox 360 has been more popular, largely be-
cause of its robust online service, Xbox Live, which allows people to play games with others online. The Wii is still the top seller among the three consoles, though it has lost momentum in recent years. The Wii U was the first of the newest generation of video game consoles to launch, but sales so far have been disappointing. Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata acknowledged recently that the Wii U and the handheld Nintendo 3Ds did not do well over the holidays, but he ruled out a price cut for the new console.
YouTube 'may charge for channels'
VIDEO sharing website YouTube is considering plans to charge people to view some of its channels. It is reported the firm, owned
by internet giant Google, has asked some of its contributors to create paid-for channels that will be available later this year charging consumers between
one dollar (60p) and five dollars (ÂŁ3) a month. A YouTube spokeswoman said: "We have long maintained that different content requires dif-
ferent types of payment models. The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we're looking at that." More than four billion hours of video are watched on the site each month with 72 hours of video uploaded to it every minute. YouTube, which was set up in 2005, has previously been criticised by the entertainment business over copyright infringement but now hosts channels by broadcasters including Channel 5, Channel4 and BBC Worldwide. In a speech at the Edinburgh International Television Festival in 2011, Google boss Dr Eric Schmidt said the television industry should use YouTube to test its products and said the internet was "fundamental" to the future of television.

Zoo owner sleeps covered in reptiles ahead of Chinese Year of the Snake
World War II veteran’s funeral procession stops at Burger King for one last meal
A
zoo owner in the Philippines has taken the rather drastic step of sleeping with his collection of snakes as he prepares to usher in the Chinese ‘Year of the Snake’. Emmanuel Tangco appears to have a rather unusual relationship with the reptiles and has been pictured covered in the snakes at Malabon zoo in Malabon, Metro Manila. One image shows Mr Tangco reading to his snakes in bed, while another shows him covered in them in a pool at the zoo, as crowds look on and photograph the unusual scene. The Year of the Snake commences on Sunday February 10 and a number of zoos around the world are using the occasion to let members of the public get closer to the reptiles.Oregon zoo, for example, is offering free admission on Sunday and staff will be allowing visitors to experience ‘up-close encounters with various snakes’. The offer is one Mr Tangcon may decide to miss as he appears to have his hands full enough at the moment…
Essex debt advice charity evicted over unpaid bills AN Essex debt advice charity appears to have been so busy giving everyone else guidance on paying the bills it has forgotten to pay its own. The Harlow Welfare Rights and Advice group was evicted from its property after reportedly racking up debts of £125,000. Staff at the charity, which provides debt and welfare services advice, turned up at the offices only to find the locks had been changed. The charity said it had no notice of the eviction, accusing the council of ‘inflexibility’ over a possible repayment plan. ‘Last year alone, we had 10,000 clients,’ said chairman of the charity’s trustees Les Coben. ‘One thousand of them were quite complex cases and we’ve got back for them £1.7million which they would have lost out on. The residents in Harlow are definitely going to suffer.’ Council leader Mark Wilkinson has insisted the authority’s actions were entirely legal and hopes to put a new service provider in place. ‘I sincerely hope that the council can now resolve any outstanding issues associated with HWRA and be able to move forwards to secure alternative service provision,’ he told the Harlow Star.

The family of a World War II veteran and life-long fan of fast food arranged for his hearse to make an usual stop during his funeral procession – at a Burger King drivethrough. Friends and family of David Kime organised a trip to his favourite Burger King restaurant in Pennsylvania during the hearse’s journey to the cemetery. Upon reaching the drive-through, each mourner picked up a Whopper Jr burger. Mr Kime even got one, with the Whopper, apparently one of his favourites, placed on his coffin in the cemetery. Commenting on the unusual funeral, his daughter Linda Phiel said: ‘He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms.’ Ms Phiel said her father, who passed away on January 20 aged 88, had eaten what he wanted after his wife Grace died 25 years ago. ‘My mother kind of kept him in check. When she died, for a while, he would eat with us. But he considered us health freaks because we ate things that were green, like broccoli,’ she added. Despite being a borderline diabetic and having a pacemaker fitted, Ms Phiel told the York Daily Record her father had refused to change his diet, telling her: ‘I won’t live longer, it will just seem like it because I’ll be more miserable faster.’ Mr Kime was apparently ‘not prejudiced’ when it came to fast food and would go to any type of restaurant he was invited to. The manager of the Pennsylvania Burger King said she was pleased he had remained a loyal customer. ‘It’s nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end – the very end,’ Margaret Hess said.

Grim month for dealers as new buyers hold off
I
T has been a grim first month for most dealers by all accounts. The number of buyers and potential purchasers of new cars has been low. It obviously has been a grim month for them as well with increased bills, more charges and property taxes in prospect.
Consumer confidence is critical for car buying and, as of now anyway, it appears to be quite low. Registrations have been running at about 28pc lower than January 2012, according to sources. A fall on last January was expected because its figures were boosted by a lot of

pre-ordering due to VAT changes. And with a fair bit of pre-registration over the final days of this month, the figures for this January might come out a bit better. Pre-registrations means registering new cars to boost market share. They are subsequently sold on as one-owner nearly-new motors at a discount. But they can not disguise the harsh reality. Most salespeople reckon it has been a much worse start to the year than last. It has certainly been tougher than most in the industry anticipated or forecast. As such it casts serious doubt over projections of 75,000 new-car registrations for the full year – which in itself would have been 5,000 down on 2012. Now a number of those close to the current industry trend are saying the figure could dip to 70,000 – and possibly lower. It is far too early to say one way or the other and it is amazing what can happen to

turn things around. There is a school of thought that the two 'new-car' periods this year (January and July) might have already had the effect of levelling out buying patterns over the year. However, unless there is a marked pickup in February, the trend will probably have to be seen for what it is, a reflection of consumer negativity after yet another brutal Budget. And that could put renewed focus on the 'second window' from July when the 132 registration plate starts up. There is a belief that many potential buyers have put off making the decision to buy – for now – while holding on to the possibility of a July purchase. It will be interesting to see if and when they return and what it will take to prompt them to do so. It is early days and the complexion of the buying business could change over the coming months with a bit of good economic news.

Shannon River Adventure
L
ocated beside scenic Bofin Lake close to the villages of Roosky and Dromod, the Shannon River adventure park offers a range of outdoor activities
suitable for adults and children alike and is the perfect location for your Stag or Hen do! Activities on offer include canoeing, kayaking, raftbuilding, pier-jumping and a range of team games and activities including archery. The water-based activities begin in the comfort and safety of their private marina, and progress on to Lough Bofin and further. All of the instructors are fully qualified, and all of the activities are fully insured. Kayaking is Probably one of the most popular activities, Kayaking is a sport for all ages and abilities. Have a fun taster session on one
of our sit-on-top Kayaks or take things a little more seriously with one of our cockpit Kayaks. We use venues such as the tranquil waters of Lough Bofin and Lough Boderg. Canoeing Or open boating as it’s also known is a little more relaxed than Kayaking with usually 2/3 to a boat. The Open / Canadian canoe is immediately distinguishable from a kayak because it is paddled using a single bladed paddle. On a relaxing open boat trip you will get to visit some of the many islands surrounding the beautiful waters of the river Shannon and Kilglass Lakes.

#3 Compose the guest list Hen etiquette regarding who to invite is a grey area. Should the future mother-in-law be invited? Should the bride ask her childhood friends? It’s her party, so she should feel free to ask everyone she knows or just a small number of close friends. Many brides opt for two separate celebrations – one for family and one for friends, to ensure that everyone is catered for. #4 Choose a date and stick to it Once you have a list of everyone the Bride wants to invite, hi-light the most important
guests. Discuss the date with the VIPs to ensure that they are all free. Once you choose your date, try to stick to it! Unfortunately, it is inevitable that one or two people will not be able to make it. #5 Determine the budget Remember to include transport, accommodation, meals and day-time activities as well as night-time fun and frolics. The average outlay for a hen weekend in Ireland is €180 per person for two nights accommodation, one day-time activity, one evening meal with drinks and a nightclub. #6 Source good quality accommodation Depending on numbers and the time of year, it can be difficult to find good value accommodation. The self-catering option is really popular with hens, as you have space to play hen games before a night on the town. Also, you are not constrained to early bird breakfasts!
Dare to be different and try a new cuisine, to really tantalize your taste buds. Tell the restaurant that you are booking for a hen party, as many will offer you a secluded area. Ask for a set menu with a glass or two of wine each, to make payment easier. #9 An alternative night out If you hate the thought of a nightclub, comedy clubs provide endless laughs. Look out for improv nights, which are similar to the television show, “Whose Line is it Anyway?” for a truly interactive experience. #10 Have a girlie night in Many hens choose a “girls' night in”, rather than a night out. Pyjama parties with loads of chick flicks and Champagne are great fun. To add a sense of individuality, maybe hire a personal stylist to discuss colour and style with you all!
#7 Plan unique day-time activities Come up with something other than a pub crawl for the afternoon. Think of the all the great things girls love to do. Singing, dancing and being pampered are all good places to start! #8 Source a restaurant with a difference

eagasc Director, Professor Gerry Boyle, described as pretty much meaningless the statement that “… a farm of that value [€750k] is likely to generate an annual income of just over €41,000”. Professor Boyle was reacting to media reports of proposals that the children of business owners with assets of over €750,000 would not qualify for third level education maintenance grants. Professor Boyle said: “ That he was mystified as to how such a construction could be put onto Teagasc published data according to weekend media reports that “…a farm of that value [€750k] is likely to generate an annual income of just over €41,000”. Teagasc did not provide the type of calculation to any party as implied by the article. Teagasc does not publish any Family Farm Income (FFI) estimates for different farm asset values. “It makes little sense to take a particular asset value and assign a single income to that asset class
when the range of income at that asset class is likely to be substantial. There is a basic misunderstanding of the nature of farm income data revealed in the article. Farm incomes at every farm size level or asset class are notoriously variable,” he said. He pointed out that the Teagasc National Farm Survey for 2011 showed that Average Family Farm Income averaged €24,461, the highest for many years. However, he warned that farm incomes are notoriously variable from year to year. He went on to say that, apart from the tremendous variation in farm incomes across farms of the same size, value and between years. It should also be borne in mind that reported farm incomes relate to all family members that depend on the farm for a livelihood. Many farms will have more than one family member gainfully employed. For compatibility with non-farm income it would be preferable to calculate farm income per family labour unit.

YOU OVER Do I Have a Drinking Problem? ARE WEIGHT?
4 Key Questions to Ask Yourself
by Megan Fennell
A
lcohol abuse means having unhealthy or dangerous drinking habits, such as drinking every day or drinking too much at a time. Alcohol abuse can harm your relationships, cause you to miss work, and lead to legal problems such as driving while drunk (intoxicated). When you abuse alcohol, you continue to drink even though you know your drinking is causing problems. If you continue to abuse alcohol, it can lead to alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence is also called alcoholism.Alcoholism is the physical or emotional dependence on alcohol. It comes in different forms:A person suffering from alcoholism might get drunk every day, or wait for the weekend to binge. Regardless of the drinking pattern, long-term heavy alcohol consumption affects the liver, heart, and brain, and it can be difficult to overcome without help. You are physically or mentally addicted to alcohol. You have a strong need, or craving, to drink. You feel like you must drink just to get by. You might be dependent on alcohol if you have three or more of the following problems in a year: • You cannot quit drinking or control how much you drink. • You need to drink more to get the same effect. • You have withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. These include feeling sick to your stomach, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. • You spend a lot of time drinking and recovering from drinking, or you have given up other activities so you can drink. • You have tried to quit drinking or to cut back the amount you drink but haven't been able to. • You continue to drink even though it harms your relationships and causes you to develop physical problems. Alcoholism is a long-term (chronic) disease. It's not a weakness or a lack of willpower. Like many other diseases, it has a course that can be predicted, has known symptoms, and is influenced by your genes and your life situation. How much drinking is too much? Alcohol is part of many people’s lives and may have a place in cultural and family traditions. It can sometimes be hard to know when you begin to drink too much. You are at risk of drinking too much and should talk to your doctor if you are:
1. A woman who has more than 3 drinks at one time or more than 7 drinks a week. A standard drink is 1 can of beer, 1 glass of wine, or 1 mixed drink. 2. A man who has more than 4 drinks at one time or more than 14 drinks a week. What are some signs of alcohol abuse or dependence? Certain behaviours may mean that you're having trouble with alcohol. These include: drinking in the morning, being drunk often for long periods of time, drinking alone, changing what you drink, such as switching from beer to wine because you think it will help you drink less or keep you from getting drunk, feeling guilty after drinking, making excuses for your drinking or doing things to hide your drinking, such as buying alcohol at different stores, not remembering what you did while you were drinking (blackouts), worrying that you won't get enough alcohol for an evening or weekend. How are alcohol problems diagnosed? Alcohol problems may be diagnosed at a routine doctor visit or when you see your doctor for another problem. If a partner or friend thinks you have an alcohol problem, he or she may urge you to see your doctor. Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and past health, and he or she will do a physical exam and sometimes a mental health assessment. The mental health assessment checks to see whether you may have a mental health problem, such as depression. Your doctor also may ask questions or do tests to look for health problems linked to alcohol, such as cirrhosis. How are they treated? Treatment depends on how bad your alcohol problem is. Some people are able to cut back to a moderate level of drinking with help from a counsellor. People who are addicted to alcohol may need medical treatment and may need to stay in a hospital or treatment centre. Your doctor may decide you need detoxification, or detox, before you start treatment. Detox flushes out the alcohol in your body. You need detox when you are physically addicted to alcohol. When you go through detox, you may need medicine to help with
withdrawal symptoms. ter detox, you focus on staying alcohol-free, or sober. Most people receive some type of therapy, such as group counselling. You also may need medicine to help you stay sober. When you are sober, you've taken the first step toward recovery. To gain full recovery, you need to take steps to improve other areas of your life, such as learning to deal with work and family. This makes it easier to stay sober. You will likely need support to stay sober and in recovery. This can include counselling and support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. Recovery is a long-term process, not something you can achieve in a few weeks. Treatment doesn't focus on alcohol use alone. It addresses other parts of your life, like your relationships, work, medical problems, and living situation. Treatment and recovery support you in making positive changes so you can live without alcohol. What can you do if you or another person has a problem with alcohol? If you feel you have an alcohol problem, get help. Even if you are successful in other areas of your life, visit a doctor or go to a self-help group. The earlier you get help, the easier it will be to cut back or quit. Helping someone with an alcohol problem is hard. If you're covering for the person, you need to stop. For example, don't make excuses for the person when he or she misses work. You may be able to help by talking to the person about what his or her drinking does to you and others.Talk to the person in private, when the person is not using drugs or alcohol and when you are both calm. If the person agrees to get help, call for an appointment right away. Don't wait. If you think you might have a drinking problem, take a short quiz to check your symptoms: 1. Have I ever felt I should cut down on my drinking? 2. Have people annoyed me by criticizing my drinking? 3. Have I ever felt bad or guilty about my drinking? 4. Have I ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady my nerves or to get rid of a hangover? If you answered “yes” to two or more questions, you should get help.Talk to your doctor, and check out groups like ModerationManagemen.org, a recovery program and national support network for people who have decided to reduce their drinking.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE
Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process
A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.
A Loss Assessor will:
• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf
Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?
The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims
Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your

The way a claim is prepared and presented if every bit as important as the way in which it is negotiated and settled. You therefore need to appoint a LOSS ASSESSOR as soon as you realise that you have a claim. DON’T WAIT until things start to go wrong – when the Insurance Company’s LOSS ADJUSTER tells you that you are not entitled to claim for something which you were convinced forms part of your claim – or when the LOSS ADJUSTER tries to reduce the amount you are claiming.
