IDESPREAD shock has been expressed by groups across the North West, including the N4 Action Group, at the NRA's decision to suspend plans to upgrade the N4 stretch of road between Collooney and Castlebaldwin in Co Sligo. It is also, perhaps, indicative of the political clout that remains in the region in the light of this development. In a letter to Sligo County Council this week the NRA stated there were insufficient funds to allow publication of the documents being prepared by the Council towards work on the road. They would review the situation in three years time. Angry local residents living alongside the stretch of road who have been campaigning for years, to the extent they have placed 29 white crosses along it, in memory of all those killed there, must be wondering who really cares for the safety of people travelling on the most treacherous part of this national primary road. Local TDs and senators have been severely criticized for their lack of effort on the matter. Very few of the local people share the optimism of Minister John Perry who stated after meeting with the Chief Executive of the NRA, Fred Barry, that he was hopeful the project would be activated again once funding became available. Fine Gael Cllr Gerard Mullaney said he is disappointed by the news but says it’s important people do not lose hope in the project. Continued on Page 2

Bullied boy’s parents unhappy with trial outcome

Gemma and Brian Langan THE parents of a Mayo boy who was subjected to ten months of abuse and harassment by Brian Flynn, have stated their dissatisfaction with the outcome of the trial. Flynn was given a suspended six-month prison sentence, a €600 fine and ordered to stay away from Harry by Judge Mary Devins. Gemma Langan described the ruling as nothing more than ‘a big old slap on the wrists’. She felt the judge had missed a great opportunity to lay down a benchmark with regard to

cyberbullying. This is an issue which is becoming more prevalent and she didn’t think than Flynn had received what he deserved from the judge. The deterrent is still not there. Gemma and her husband, Brian, are keen to close what has been a traumatic chapter in their lives, and despite the media spotlight shining firmly on them in the wake of the recent hearing at Westport District Court, they no longer want to discuss Brian Flynn or what has happened. However, they now hope that lessons can be learned from the case, and that another family can be spared similar torment, through legislation changes in relation to registering SIM cards and mobile phones. This aspect of their own story they will be driving on in the coming weeks and months. “I wouldn’t want another family to go through this, not when it can be avoided. The accused had five SIM cards and he hid behind them and was allowed to wage a sustained campaign of hatred against a child by doing so. Other criminals use mobile phones to facilitate their crimes and this needs to be stopped. It is not just about children being bullied by text message, it is far more wide sweeping

than that. If you are a good citizen you have nothing to worry about in producing your passport to get a SIM card.” “We have been doing research and want to speak with phone companies and others with vested interest in this,” Gemma continued. “We will be making our feelings known to the Minister for Communications, the Taoiseach and other local deputies, but not until we have a concrete proposal based on real and thoroughly researched information. “In Africa, there are 25 countries where you must register SIM cards. These are impoverished countries, but they see the benefit of this legislation in relation to crime prevention. It makes us wonder what is wrong with this country, what are we afraid of?” Requests to appear on television shows this week have been declined and the couple say they want to get on with the job of raising their three children and look ahead not behind. To this end, they will be stepping back from the media spotlight, except in relation to the SIM card issue. They are very grateful to the Gardai and to all who helped them through their ordeal, but they now just want to move on.

Calls for self-employed to “seek help” THE Mayor of Castlebar recently highlighted the financial difficulties facing many self-employed people in the North West, saying they should not be afraid to seek help with their problems. Councillor Brendan Heneghan was speaking at the official opening of the new offices of South Mayo money advice and budgetary service (MABS) at Nephin Halls, Hopkins Road, Castlebar, He stated the support and direction provided by the organisation is second to none, particularly for those who have lost businesses. He said: “No matter how serious the situation may appear, their staff will always find a way out. It is great to have such expertise on our doorsteps.”

Although Councillor Henaghan did not elaborate on his concerns for the self-employed, it is understood he was making reference to the fact that selfemployed people did not receive the same social welfare entitlements as PAYE workers when losing their jobs. Such inequality has contributed to the pressures being faced by selfemployed during the difficult economic times. While the head office of South Mayo MABs is based in Castlebar, there are outreach offices in Achill, Ballyhaunis, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Kiltimagh, Louisburgh, Westport and the Castlebar Campus of GMIT. MABS works with clients by supporting them in drawing up realistic budgets and maximising their

incomes In a non-judgmental and confidential setting, it aids people in regaining control of their finances by helping them to set up an affordable and sustainable budget as well as seeking voluntary arrangements with creditors. The opening was performed by Taoiseach Enda Kenny who praised everybody associated with South Mayo MABS for their outstanding work. He said over 100,000 people in Ireland were struggling with their mortgages and could not, as a result, make a contribution to the economy. He believed, however, that hope is on the horizon for them due to the government’s deal with the ECB over the promissory notes.

Shock as NRA suspends N4 upgrade plans CONTINUED FROM THE FRONT PAGE PRO of the Action Group, Bernard Mulhern, says one of the final drafts for the route was due to be submitted to the authority this afternoon. Only February 12th last, 28year-old Dermot Bannon was tragically killed following an accident on this stretch of road. There was uproar when details of the letter were made known to members of the Council at its meeting yesterday, and they're now seeking a meeting with the NRA as a matter of urgency. Similar to other local press, we have highlighted the urgency of upgrading this extremely dangerous stretch of road. Now it looks like the matter will be kicked to touch until the Government decides to allocate funding. In the meantime, we can only pray that the number of white crosses doesn’t continue to grow.

Mayo man had massive child-porn collection A Mayo man has been sentenced to ten years for distributing and possessing one of the largest collections of child pornography ever uncovered James Clarke (58) of Devlis Cottage, Ballyhaunis, Mayo pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to four counts of knowingly distributing child pornography at Russell View Square, Tallaght, Dublin on separate dates in August 2010. He also pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on August 20, 2010. The investigation also revealed that Clarke was also in email contact with a woman about keeping her and her 14year-old daughter as sex slaves. The 135,555 images and videos found

on Clarke’s computer included images showing severe child sex abuse involving bondage, cruelty and bestiality. The child pornography was organised into computer folders by themes and individuals. Clarke was using an Internet site to offer the images to others. Detective Garda Cathal Delaney told Fiona McGowan BL, prosecuting, at the sentence hearing last July, that the files found on Clarke’s computer drives was “the largest collection of child porn” he had ever found up to that date. The court heard that Clarke would restrict access to his files to other users who were sharing files. Det Garda Delaney said that warnings about

sharing files and an invitation to others to “enjoy the files you use” was repeated in a number of languages. In total Clarke’s computer drives held 133,563 images and 1,992 videos showing child porn. Garda Christopher O’Leary told Ms McGowan that Clarke has a previous conviction for sex with a minor in 1977, when he was 20. Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced Clarke to ten years, but suspended two years of the term on condition that he keeps the peace and is of good behaviour for three years on his release. The sentence was backdated to when Clarke went into custody in January 2012. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Donating puppies for vulnerable people A

Darragh Healy, Ballyfarnon, pictured with some of the pups, which his father is willing to donate to a good home.

Ballyfarnon man is offering to donate puppies to elderly people who are feeling vulnerable in their homes. P.J. Healy has six Lab-Pointer puppies (a cross between a pointer and labrador), which he is willing to donate free of charge to worthy homes, especially where people are feeling vulnerable. “Unfortunately, there are so many elderly people who are being terrorised in rural Ireland. They are afraid in their homes and worrying about being the victim of crime. These dogs are five months old and will make excellent guard dogs as they have great scent in their nose, are extremely alert but are not vicious. They will alert homeowners to anyone approaching the house,” explained P.J. Although the dogs could easily be sold for €600 each, P.J .said that he was not interested in accepting money for them, adding that as a pensioner he could understand why people were feeling anxious in their homes. PJ is married to Josephine and the couple have six children. However, he said the Ireland of

today was vastly different to when he was rearing his own family. “When you turn on the news, there is so much talk of break-ins and criminal activity. This, on top of the closure of Garda stations, means that people no longer feel as safe as they once did in their homes, times have changed drastically. The criminals sophisticated and have great ways of networking and finding out all the information about people. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, they get their information from people locally, which is a worrying development. Hopefully, having a dog like this around the house, will put people a little more at ease,” he added. Cllr Eugene Murphy, who suggested that in the wake of increased crime, people should invest in a household dog, has praised the generous spirit of Mr Healy. “PJ is a great man for deciding to do this. He could easily make money from selling the puppies, but has decided to give to those living in fear the chance to sleep a little better at night.” P.J. Healy can be contacted in relation to the puppies, at 071 9647014.

Complaints over noise levels from Roscommon wind farm ROSCOMMON County Council has received complaints from local residents in the Skrine area of Roscommon about noise pollution from a small wind farm in the area. The Council has received complaints regarding noise pollution from residents living in close proximity to two wind turbine structures, which were commissioned in August 2011. The households have complained that the noise from the turbines, which have an overall height of around 100 metres, has turned their lives upside down and made their existence unbearable. The constant pulsating noise has led to sleep deprivation and is impacting on the health of those living close by. This week one of the families affected by the wind turbines, Michael and Dorothy Keane, said that they were close to breaking point and felt that they had no option but to make a complaint to the council. “We just want someone to listen to our concerns, to see what we have to live with day in day out. We are at the end of our tether and cannot take much more. We cannot sleep at night and are struggling to cope

on a daily basis because of this constant pulsating noise that gets inside your head,” said Mr. Keane.

The other family, who wished to remain anonymous at this stage, also confirmed that it had made complaints to the council over noise coming from the turbines. The family indicated that it wanted noise levels to be monitored independently and for a period of at least six months. It has since emerged that no specific noise limits were attached to the grant of planning permission for the turbines, which was granted by An Bord Pleanala in 2005. The council has indicated that this was “unusual” in correspondence with one of the families concerned and that the absence of specific noise limits made it difficult to enforce compliance. While the council accepted this difficulty, it said that wind energy company, Gaelectric, had provided evidence last December to show that noise levels were within generally accepted limits. Gaelectric also confirmed this week that it had commissioned noise surveys last year, which found that the Skrine wind farm was operating within noise thresholds agreed with the county council last year.

Lynn says he wouldn’t get fair trial here THE director general of the Law Society has hit out at a "whining" interview given by on-the-run solicitor Michael Lynn. Fugitive solicitor and Mayo native Michael Lynn, in an interview with “Dublin’s Best” magazine, says he won't be returning to Ireland from his haven in Brazil, due to concerns that he wouldn't receive a fair trial and his fear of going to prison. The fugitive ex-solicitor, who has been criticized by the director-general of the Law Society of Ireland, for his “whining interview”, spoke of how banks were throwing money at him during the boom. Mr. Ken Murphy dubbed the fugitive's words as "self-justifications, paranoia, fantasising and whining". Mr. Lynn’s interview in the new magazine had been conducted by another struck-off solicitor, David Elio Malocco. In the 1990s, Mr Malocco was sentenced to five years in prison for fraud committed while he was working for the now defunct 'Irish Press' newspaper. He used money from his employer's libel fund to cover losses he incurred on investments. In the interview, Mr Lynn said that while he was involved in developing properties in Portugal and Bulgaria through his firm Kendar, "banks were competing with each other to throw money at you". He said: "In one weekend I raised €10m on the strength of a letter. The feeling was one of euphoria. It was better than sex. Property development was the ultimate high." Mr Lynn fled the country in December 2007, owing more than €80m to investors. He is believed to be facing up to 50 charges relating to mortgage fraud, but cannot be extradited from Brazil, where he has secured a permanent visa after his wife, Brid Murphy, gave birth to his son there. In the interview, Mr Lynn explains how he tried to stay in business and claims that he tried to protect his clients investments, saying: "In order to secure people's deposits, I continued to borrow and put in my own money – money I made from profits from previous transactions – to ensure the small investor didn't lose any money." He said he would not be returning to Ireland "in the foreseeable future" adding: "There is not a chance in hell I would get a fair trial. I am already a condemned man."

Mayo Communities could suffer alienation if Minister Hogan makes radical changes to LEADER in Ireland MAJOR changes which risk the total upheaval of the current LEADER local development model are being considered by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government. In response to these negative proposals, this week, rural citizens and community groups along with Board members of South West Mayo Development Co. are taking action to demand that they do not get cut off at grass roots level. In a reform measure proposed by Minister Phil Hogan - ‘Putting People First’ it is proposed to weaken and undermine the valuable and well-established working relationships between Mayo community groups and individuals and the Local Development Companies like South West Mayo Development Company. It is predicted that the proposed transfer of these services to the local authorities could alienate marginalised and disadvantaged rural communities who have benefited so well over the last two decades. ‘Alignment has many risks where the ordinary rural person will be pushed at arms length out of the system,’ said Michael Biggins, Chairman, South West Mayo Development Co. ‘It is ironic that Mr. Hogan would dismiss the fact that the Irish LEADER model approach to rural development is acclaimed as most effective and best practice in the Euro-

pean Union. These changes would see our rural dwellers re-directed to a new unfamiliar system administered by local authority personnel. We are encouraging community leaders, rural dwellers and farm families to contact their local representatives and politicians this week to highlight the adverse effects that these changes will have on their day-to-day lives.’ South West Mayo Development Company personnel have worked hand in hand with community organizations and individuals for the last twenty years, resulting in long-lasting working relationships on the ground and highly successful community-led projects. Amongst the valuable schemes are the LEADER programme along with Local and Community Development Programme ; Rural Social Scheme; Tús; Community Employment and Local Training Initiative; Rural Recreation and Walks Scheme; and WRDTF funded projects. Mayo Stroke awareness month Strandhill Lodge and Suites Ranked 15th Small Hotel in the World, 1st in Ireland

A joint venture between local Heart & Stroke Charity Croí, Mayo PCCC, HSE West and Mayo General Hospital will see the month of March designated as Mayo Stroke Awareness Month. This campaign stems from the ongoing partnership between Croí and Mayo HSE on the ‘Mayo Action on Heart Disease & Stroke’ programme, which aims to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke in the county. The main aim of this month-long campaign is to raise awareness about stroke in Mayo, and to communicate key messages on how to recognise a stroke and what you can do to prevent stroke, and to promote

the Stroke F.A.S.T. campaign. A number of free public information events will take place during March. Two public talks on Stroke awareness and prevention will be held on the 7th March in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar at 8pm and on the 14th March in Hotel Ballina, Ballina at 8pm. In conjunction with these public talks, Mayo General Hospital will also host two public information days to promote the key messages of the Stroke F.A.S.T. campaign. These information days will take place in the main foyer of Mayo General Hospital on the 11th and 14th of March from 10am to 3pm.

One in five ‘signing on’ in Galway city were building workers ONE in every five people unemployed in Galway used to work in construction related industries, an in-depth analysis of Live Register figures for the city reveals. For the first time, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released a detailed breakdown of the profile of people signing-on in each of the country’s Social Welfare offices. Scrutiny of figures from the Galway City office, which includes the wider city area and its hinterland such as including Barna and Moycullen, shows that 2,530 of the 11,270 persons signing on used to be employed directly in the building trade. It

shows that the year-on-year numbers signing on has fallen by 510 since January 2012. The statistics give an interesting insight into the types of people who are out of work since the recession hit. For example, there are 110 people in Galway City from a cohort of the population whom many people blame for the property crash -bank managers, building society managers and credit controllers – signing on the dole. It is unclear how many politicians are unemployed in Galway City, as there is no ‘politician’ sub-heading contained in the data, although any former politicians that are on the Live Register could be listed under their previous professions or as public servants, of which there are 40 signing on. The second biggest cohort of unemployed in Galway City are in what’s known as the ‘personal and protective services’ category, where there are 1,740 ‘signing on’. This broad category includes people working in the security industry, in childcare, and occupations such as traffic wardens and housekeepers. Some 10 soldiers in Galway City are signing on; and there are 20 fire fighters, Gardaí and prison officers unemployed. The data shows that the city’s retail sector has taken a heavy hit in terms of jobs lost – 1,260 or 11% of all those signing on, were in retail or sales. There were just over 1,000 ‘professionals’ signing on, including 40 barristers, judges or solicitors and 430 teachers, lecturers and tutors. There were 650 bar and restaurant staff unemployed, 100 fewer than the same month last year.

O

pened in March 2011; the Strandhill Lodge and Suites has been named amongst the top places to stay in the world for the second year running according to the coveted *Tripadvisors Travellers Choice Awards.* The only Irish Hotel to make the ‘Top 25 World Lists’, the 22 Bedroom Strandhill Lodge and Suites is also ranked Number 1 in Ireland. This award follows on from a similar award in 2012 when the Strandhill Lodge and Suites was awarded with 3 other Hotels among the Top 25 in the World ranking 13th. Reacting to the news Strandhill Lodge and Suites Manager David McCoy said ‘It is a proud privilege and honour to be recognised by our guests through the online travel site Tripadvisor. It is a very humbling honour and one that makes us and our staff very proud. Strandhill is a beautiful area and compliments what we are trying to achieve in offering an affordable, luxury

four star experience for our guests’. Proprietor Mary Henry said ‘We are delighted to receive this award as 15th Small Hotel in the World and Number 1 small hotel in Ireland – we are just happy that our guests enjoy what we and Strandhill has to offer’. The Strandhill Lodge and Suites has a mixture of superior two-room suites, rooms with patio access and balconies which all overlook Strandhill Golf Course, the Atlantic ocean and Strandhill village. On a summers evening, you can sit in the comfort of your balcony and watch the sun set into the Atlantic- it is a truly breathtaking sight. The rooms are furnished to the highest standard. This family-run establishment adorns all the plushness and modern conveniences expected of a high quality hotel. National money matters for teens at IT Sligo

ON the 22nd Feb, 100 students and teachers from Mohill Secondary School and Mercy College Sligo descended on IT Sligo to learn more about good financial habits for life when they took part in the extended learning workshop, Bank Your Future, the unique national financial education initiative by Junior Achievement, generously supported by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Findings from the evaluation of the Bank Your Future project indicate: • 32% increase in students’ confidence in knowing how to manage their money having completed the Bank Your Future programme. "Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s commitment to financial wellness is borne

through the belief that education and employability skills are essential to achieving economic growth and building strong communities. Approx 2500 students across Dublin, Leitrim, Sligo, Limerick, Cork, Waterford and Galway will this academic year participate in this initiative developed to educate students on how to establish good financial habits to carry them through their adult lives. Bank Your Future is a six-week programme taught in the class-

room by independent business volunteers from a variety of business backgrounds. Bank Your Future programme includes: • the importance of education and its role in improving potential earning power • balancing salary and expenditure • using credit and cash wisely • the importance of saving • the benefits of insurance Bank of America Merrill Lynch is one of the world's largest financial institutions, serving individual consumers, small and middle market businesses and large corporations with a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other financial and risk-management products and services. In Ireland Bank of America Merrill Lynch employs over 1000 associates across its two facilities in Dublin and Carrick-on-Shannon providing financial products and services for individual customers and large corporations. Junior Achievement, a worldwide organisation established in Ireland in 1995, brings enterprise education to young people throughout Ireland teaching them about the world of work, helping them to set goals, plan for their future and learn the skills necessary to succeed in a fast changing world. Junior Achievement aims to fill the gap where young people have no connection with business or a role model to inspire them to succeed in life. The organisation does this with the active and financial support of 150 leading Irish businesses across the commercial spectrum. Hands-on experiences help students to understand the economics of life. In partnership with businesses and educators, Junior Achievement brings the real world to young people, opening their minds to their potential.

Call on community groups and landowners to support Grid West project A call has been made on local communities and landowners throughout the west of Ireland to support the proposed Grid West upgrading of the region’s electricity system. Sean Hannick, chairman of the Council for the West, says a dramatically-enhanced electricity system is “crucial for the future development of the west of Ireland”. Mr Hannick is adamant that the development is badly needed to attract large energy-using industry projects to the west. “Over the past 15 years, we, the Council for the West, have met with the IDA on many occasions to discuss possible projects for the region. On each occasion, they pointed out that they were not able to push this region as a centre for possible energyusing industry because of the quality of the electricity transmission system,” he said. “North of a line from Galway city to Dublin, huge investment is needed. This takes in the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Donegal, and much of Galway. “Now, Eirgrid are investing €240m to improve the electricity infrastructure in the west region”. “The Eirgrid upgrade will have the impact of attracting industrial projects to the region. I would call on all community groups and landowners to support this very important initiative as it will have long-term and far-reaching benefits”. Mr Hannick added that the Eirgrid upgrading would “help to iron out some of the disadvantages faced by the west of Ireland in terms of promoting economic development”.

Sony unveils 'bold' new PlayStation

The hotly-anticipated PlayStation 4 has been unveiled by Sony as a "bold step forward" for the gaming giant. At an event in New York, which was streamed around the world, the Japanese electronics company confirmed widespread rumours of the next generation console. PS4 system architect Mark Cerny said the fast new system will have eight gigabytes of memory and an updated controller called the DualShock 4. The controller has a touchpad, a headphone socket and a light bar which can be tracked by a camera to detect where the player is. The expert said the new pad will give the gamer a "tighter sense of control". The new console has been praised by gaming enthusiasts as having the potential to be "game-changing". It is the Japanese electronics giant's first major game machine since the PlayStation 3 went on sale in 2006. Andrew House, the group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, told the audience and millions of people on the internet: "Today marks a moment of truth and a bold step forward for PlayStation as a company. Today we'll show how we are strengthening the PlayStation ecosystem." He spoke of "magical experiences" and worlds that will "come alive" in a computer games experience that had the the gamer at its heart before giving a glimpse into the "future of play". Technology enthusiast Alex Simmons, the UK editor of gaming website IGN.com, said the announcement of the Playstation 4 with its "incredible cinematic visuals" was a warning to its rivals, adding that Sony's innovations could be "game-changing". He said: "In the past, Sony has been guilty of making bold claims and not always delivering, but its vision of modern gaming against a backdrop of increased competition from smartphones and tablets with their cheaper games is exciting... Sony's innovations, such as the ability to share gameplay experiences with friends, and the rest of the world - and a planned archive of Sony's considerable back catalogue streamed over the internet - could be game-changing."

IT problems cost RBS Group €200m R BS Group took a €200 million hit as a result of last summer's IT meltdown, which left NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank customers locked out of their accounts. Its annual report showed that the bulk of the redress costs related to Ulster Bank, where the problems took weeks longer to clear up, with the bill reaching around £82 million. The group promised that no one would be left permanently worse off as a result of the chaos which left people barred from accessing their wages and disrupted holidays and house moves. People were told to hang on to receipts such as phone bills and transport tickets and the group promised to compensate any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, as well as waiving interest and charges. In an additional gesture to repair its damaged reputation for Ulster Bank customers, current account holders in the Republic of Ireland were handed 25 euro payments while those in Northern Ireland received £20 in one-off payouts. A spokesman for the group said that while the bank has now generally put matters right for customers, there is no time limit so people can still come forward if they have incurred extra costs. The group said on Thursday that staff worked "tirelessly" throughout the disruption to tackle the problems and provide full redress and compensation. The banking giant also put aside an extra £1.1 billion last year to compensate customers who

have been mis-sold payment protection insurance, taking its total PPI compensation pot to £2.2 billion. It said that with the prospect of a new financial regulator looking into many products, services and sales practices, "there are likely to be further impacts to business practices and potential additional costs of redress". The bank said it is "actively working to ensure its products set and sales practices are appropriate".

The group also reported that the effects of a Government scheme to help borrowers by giving lenders access to cheap finance were seen in an uplift in its mortgage lending last year. Mortgage balances grew by £4.1 billion over 2012 and growth as a result of the Funding for Lending scheme began to appear towards the end of the year as mortgage applications moved through the pipeline to completion, RBS said.

Smartphone launched into space

A miniature satellite carrying a smartphone has been launched into space. The British-built Strand-1 spacecraft, developed by scientists in Surrey, was sent into

orbit from Sriharikota in India. Known as "phonesat", the device is the first off-the-shelf smartphone to be sent out of the earth's atmosphere, where it will orbit the planet in syn-

chronisation with the sun at 488 miles (785km). Scientists from the University of Surrey's Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) are testing how gadgets that are available on the high street can perform in space. The Google Nexus One android smartphone has been loaded with special experimental apps and will act as the "brain of the satellite". Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, SSC director and also executive chairman of SSTL, said: "This mission is a fantastic achievement and a great tribute to the hard work of the engineers involved. "The UK's first nanosatellite Snap-1, also built by SSC and SSTL and launched in 2000, was the world's most advanced nanosatellite at the time - Strand-1 continues that story with the latest technologies available to us in 2013." The smartphones that many

people carry around in their pockets contain the highly advanced technologies that are integral to satellites - such as cameras, radio links, accelerometers and high performance computer processors. Experts said they have almost everything needed to operate a satellite - except the solar panels and propulsion. The Google Nexus One has been tested to work in a vacuum and at temperatures as low as minus 20C and as high as 50C. Its apps were chosen from entries to a Facebook competition, one of which tests whether a "Scream in Space" can be heard through vibrations in the phone's microphone. Also fitted on the 3.9in (10cm) x 11.8in (30cm) satellite - which weighs 9.5lbs (4.3kg) - is a new Linux-based high-speed processor, an orbit control system and two water-alcohol fuelled plasma thrusters.

Should have gone to Specsavers?

I am the best bar none, says jobseeker

Car crashes into optician's shop window

A

n ominous red liquid seeping from under the vehicle was reported to be brake fluid or coolant. In a scene that positively shouted out that most famous of advertising slogans a poor motorist ploughed into the entrance of a

branch of Specsavers. Although the Sevenoaks branch of the opticians was open and had customers and staff inside when the smash occurred on Sunday thankfully no one - including the driver - was hurt.

An ominous red liquid seeping from under the vehicle was reported to be brake fluid or coolant. Onlooker Ben Bridges said: "I was driving through Sevenoaks high street and saw this had happened. "It was way too good an opportunity to pass up so I turned the car around, parked and went over to the scene. "It seemed almost impossible to get the car in to the shop window at that angle! It was literally perpendicular to the road!" A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service told the Sevenoaks Chronicle: "We were called just before midday following reports that a car had crashed into a shop front. "We sent one ambulance. There was one person involved who, while uninjured, was shocked. Our crew assessed the casualty at the scene. Hospital treatment wasn't required." Specsavers store director Maxine Chakowa told the newspaper: "We are pleased that all of our customers and staff are safe and well. "We are working with the police with their on-going investigation. "The store will remain closed until experts have ascertained the full extent of the damage." The message of the popular optician's longrunning advertising campaign uses the tag: "Should have gone to Specsavers".

'I don't deserve it': Homeless man's astonishment after donors pledge him $150,000 for returning diamond engagement ring A homeless man has become the centre of a global fundraising campaign - after returning a diamond engagement ring to a brideto-be who dropped it in his coffee cup. Sarah Darling lost her ring on the streets of Kansas City when she it unknowingly dropped it into a cup belonging to Billy Ray Harris. She desperately dashed back to the scene the next day after realising it was missing, and was overjoyed when Harris returned the valuable jewellery straight back to her. The feel-good story has touched so many people that an online fundraising page for homeless Harris has since pulled $150,000 in less than a fortnight. The act of selflessness by Harris, who sleeps under a bridge and spends his days in a square in Kansas City, has since been described as a 'miracle' by Ms Darling's fiance, Bill Krejci. Mr Krejci, who set up the online donations page himself, said the act of generosity 'makes you realise that there are good people out there'. The donations, which on Tuesday after-

noon stood at $151,000, are currently enough for Harris to get himself off the streets and buy a three-bedroom house in Kansas City. Harris told a local television station he 'had that little devil on my shoulder saying, "Keep the money",' but he decided against pawning the ring for cash. When a distraught Ms Darling returned to the square hoping to retrieve the ring, she told Harris: "I don't know if you remember me, but I think I gave you something that's very precious." Harris asked her, "Was it a ring?", before adding, "Yeah I have it, I kept it for you," and pulling it from a pocket. Ms Darling and her fiance set up the fundraising page to thank Harris for returning the ring, hoping it would pull in $1,000. Instead, over 6,000 pledges have flooded in from Asia, Europe and America, all wishing Harris well for his good deed. One donor left a message on the page saying: "An amazing man who deserves amazing things.. I hope things go well for you :) You are a true inspiration around the

world!!" Another pledge, from Pat Gowen, read: "Thank you Mr. Harris for your honesty. You have restored my faith in people. God Bless you." Harris himself said he didn't think he deserves all the attention he has been getting. He told local television station KCTV: "What I actually feel is, "What is the world coming to when a person returns something that dosn't belong to him and all this happens?".' He added: "My grandfather was a reverend. He raised me from the time I was six months old and, thank the good Lord, it's a blessing, but I do still have some character." Harris said he may attempt to find somewhere to live in Texas, where he has family, but is currently staying with a friend. In a statement on the Give Forward online page, Bill Krejci said after meeting Harris: "We talked about what he plans to do. "He has a very solid plan and a very solid way of making it happen."

Desperate jobseeker Nick Begley was sick of getting rejections using his conventional CV. So he turned it into a chocolate bar label. He headlined it: ‘Credentials that will satisfy any organisation’s appetite’, and, not wishing to undersell himself, added that he offered ’100 per cent daily value in leadership, creativity and business acumen’. He wrapped the CV around a Nestlé Crunch bar and it worked. The MBA student was offered a marketing job with New York-based Sportsvite. ‘I knew I had to stand out from other applications,’ said Mr Begley, 32, from New York state. His CV went viral after friend Eli Langer posted a photo of the wrapper on to Reddit, where it has acquired more than 3,000 comments. Mr Begley added to ABC News: ‘People are either going to love it or hate it. My focus was to find an organization that would embrace it because if they weren’t open to that kind of out-of-the-box thinking, that wouldn’t be a company that I would fit in well with anyways.’

Mexican priest with comic book robe sprays congregation with holy water gun We doubt the next pope will spray his congregation with a water gun filled with holy water but he may want to take inspiration from the way a Mexican priest is making his Mass much more enjoyable. Father Humberto Alvarez not only drenches people with his water toy, he also wears a snazzy robe that features images of Superman, Spiderman and Batman. The priest chose the characters because of their ‘struggle and effort to overcome fear and find peace and forgiveness’. He added these were traits he wished to pass on to the members of his Ojo de Agua church in Saltillo, Mexico. The comic book characters and water gun antics are aimed at children but it seems the adults enjoy it just as much, although the priest puts the gun away during adult services. But everyone isn’t pleased with the holy man’s ’controversial’ methods, with the Bishop of Saltillo reportedly not happy with the Father.

Ardnaree & Bunree, Ballina

...a hive of business and indust#$ T

HE Ardnaree and Bunree areas in Ballina are distinct districts on the east side of the River Moy and have enjoyed a significant growth in business and industry in recent decades. It is interesting to note that these areas, in addition to The Quay, are the oldest parts of Ballina town and were originally part of Co. Sligo until the Local Government Act of 1898. The remains of the Augustinian Abbey dated to 1427 can still be seen on the east bank of the river beside the Neo-Gothicstyle St. Muredach’s Cathedral. The residents of Ardnaree have always maintained an immense pride in their

particular part of town, boasting a very fine Gaelic football team for many years. The growth of so many businesses and industries has given this part of town a degree of self-sufficiency and independence with the added boost of additional business flowing from other regions of Ballina. In recent times a number of business parks have sprung up offering a diverse range of services. In Abbey Business Park, Ardnaree Tool and Plant Hire have carried on an excellent business for 24 years. A more recent addition, Crean Kitchens, has an unrivalled range of kitchens and

of services to motorists. Tony Meenaghan’s bikes are certainly the “Bizz” and his Discount Exhaust and Towbar Centre has a reputation for efficiency and quality of service. These, in addition to Londis Supermarket and a plethora of other smaller retail and service businesses help to support and maintain a vibrant local community in Ardnaree.

Microwave on high for 1.5mins and mix together. Crumble 4 Shredded Wheat over the bowl and mix with rest of ingredients. Place a generous spoonful in each of 12 bun case (the nests). Press the centre of each nest down slightly to form a dip and place 3 chocolate mini eggs in each dip. Chill for 30mins. 5. Create an Easter egg mosaic An Easter egg mosaic is the perfect activity to engage your toddler, will have them in sticky finger heaven!

Glue some painted plastic eggs to a fake fir wire wreath. Then, situate some stuffed bunnies so that they appear to be sitting facing each other at the bottom of the wreath. Glue them into place as well and hang the holiday decoration on your front door.

them race off on the predetermined course. The winner will be the one who reaches the finish line first without dropping their egg. 7. Bunny, Bunny, RABBIT! If your kids have plenty of energy to burn, this is the game for them! As you’ve probably guessed, this is an Easter variation on the classic duck, duck, GOOSE game. Here’s how to play: Sit the kids down in a circle; Select one child to be “it”; The “it” child walks around the outside of the circle patting each player on the head and saying “bunny” until they want to say “RABBIT”; Both the “it” child and the RABBIT must hop around the circle trying to reach the vacant spot; Whoever doesn’t make it to the spot in time is then “it”.

9. Make a Cheeky Chick Pop Up Card Some colouring pencils or crayons, paper and a scissors are just about all you need to make these cute cards. Let your young kids send them to their grandparents and loved ones. These cheeky chick pop up cards will take pride of place on top of any mantelpiece! 10. Go to a Pet Farm This is the perfect time of year to visit a pet farm. After the long winter, the kids will love to run around the farm, taking in all the delights of spring. Feed a bottle to a baby lamb or cup a baby chick in your hand.

8. Egg Toss You will need plastic Easter eggs and a basket. Using colourful adhesive tape, draw a

he new 2013 Kia Sorento has gone on sale here in Ireland. Kia says the new car will be powered by an improved and more economical 2.2 turbodiesel outputting some 192 bhp diesel engine and both the trim levels available Ireland will be fitted with four-wheel drive as standard. The Sorento boasts seven seats and Kia says that the entry model EX version will be priced at €37,990, while the Platinum model will cost €41,790. The EX entry level model features 4WD as standard and also comes with a generous level of comfort and safety equipment. Also standard on the EX are 17” alloys, roof rack, Bluetooth, parking sensors, climate control in the front with manual heating/air con in the rear. The major specification differences on Platinum version include a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a driver’s seat with 6-way power adjustment, rain sensor, rear privacy glass, reversing camera and HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps. The upgraded Sorento SUV incorporates significant changes including a re-engineered body shell, an improved 2.2 diesel engine for better fuel economy with lower emissions, improved ride, additional high-tech convenience and safety features, plus a fresh, new look for the exterior. “We are delighted to be offering a D segment 7-seater SUV that comes with AWD drive as standard at a very competitive price, unlike our major competitor in this segment where AWD is only available on higher trim models,” James Brooks, managing director of Kia Motors Ireland concluded.

O

LDER people who consume a diet very high in calories may be increasing their risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the memory loss and mental-function problems that sometimes precede Alzheimer’s disease. In a new study of more than 1,200 people in their 70s and 80s, Mayo Clinic researchers found that men and women who consumed at least 2,143 calories per day had more than double the odds of having MCI compared with those who consumed 1,526 calories per day or less. Federal health officials recommend that women over age 50 consume between 1,600 and 2,200 calories per day, depending on how physically active they are, and that men in the same age group aim for between 2,000 and 2,800 calories. But the guidelines empha-

size the importance of balancing calorie intake and physical activity in order to maintain a healthy weight, not specific calorie amounts. This emphasis on calorie balance points to a key limitation of the new study: Although Geda and his colleagues took into account extenuating factors such as body mass index, genetic susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease, and medical history (including heart disease, strokes, and diabetes), they had no data on exercise and physical activity. Future studies will need to examine both sides of the calorie equation, Geda says. The study participants, all of whom hailed from Olmsted County, Minn., filled out a detailed questionnaire about their typical diet over the previous year. They also underwent a series of memory and cognitive tests. None

had dementia, but the researchers determined from the test results that 163 had MCI. MCI is “the gray zone between normal aging and dementia,” Geda says. “People with MCI are not demented [but] they are forgetful a little more than expected for their age.” This forgetfulness goes beyond senior moments (such as misplacing car keys), and might include forgetting airplane flights and other important appointments, he adds. Although it remains to be proven, there is a plausible scientific explanation for how overeating might erode mental function. Consuming a high-calorie diet may spur production of harmful, oxygen-containing molecules, and these so-called oxidative radicals may accumulate in cells and cause neurons to break down, Geda says.

Loss Assessors YOUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE

Your Loss Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process

A Loss Assessor represents policyholders when they need to submit an Insurance claim, and our members have experience in dealing with all types of claim, for both private individuals and businesses. Your Assessor will handle all aspects of the claims process, meeting with the Insurers' representatives, the Loss Adjuster or any other professional appointed by them, preparing your claim and negotiating the best possible settlement for you. They will also handle cases where liability for your claim has been refused by insurers, or where problems have arisen regarding policy liability or delays.

A Loss Assessor will:

• Attend on you immediately • Prepare the claim • Negotiate best terms for settlement on your behalf

Insurance Company will deal with it in a sympathetic manner and in such a way that does not leave you financially disadvantaged.

White & Associates

Sadly, the reality is often very different. In dealing with a claim of any size, the Insurance Company will appoint a LOSS ADJUSTER or representative. He is ENGAGED and PAID by the Insurance Company.

• Public Loss Assessors • Independent Claim Estimators • Property Damage Insurance Consultants

Human nature being what it is, the Loss Adjuster is likely to lean towards his principals, the Insurance Company. LOSS ASSESSORS charge a fee agreed with you in advance, for the work undertaken ON YOUR BEHALF

When should I appoint my Loss Assessor?

For what type of claim is a Loss Assessor needed?

The services of a Loss Assessor should be sought for all claims following loss by: •Fire • Theft • Flood • Storm • Business Interruption • Oil & Chemical Pollution • Subsidence • Computer Loss • Transit • Natural Disaster • Motor • Third Party Property Claims

Why should I need a Loss Assessor? The only reason why anyone effects insurance is against the possibility of a claim. So when a claim does arise you have the right to expect that your

The way a claim is prepared and presented if every bit as important as the way in which it is negotiated and settled. You therefore need to appoint a LOSS ASSESSOR as soon as you realise that you have a claim. DON’T WAIT until things start to go wrong – when the Insurance Company’s LOSS ADJUSTER tells you that you are not entitled to claim for something which you were convinced forms part of your claim – or when the LOSS ADJUSTER tries to reduce the amount you are claiming.
