A look inside the belly of the dead tiger
The only sounds are that of dying batteries in the smoke alarms - continued from front page THE pictures below illustrate the remnants of the Celtic Tiger, and probably now represent every county in Ireland, where half finished apartment complexes and ghost estates lie abandoned. They serve as a stark reminder of the reality of life in Ireland now and pose the question of how many more developments like this have been shelved, and what is going to be done about them? The vision that the developers had for the Old Mill unfortunately never came to fruition and a Sligo man and internet Blogger known as ‘Lenny’ recently posted that he has taken an uninterrupted walk around the Apartment Complex, where it looked like hardly anybody had ever moved in. “There are no warning signs telling you not to enter, I did not have to jump any gates or wall to get in. I simply walked from the main road down and in the front door. It is like a scene from [horror movie] ‘28 days later’ inside. Windows are smashed, partition walls are kicked in, the large dark empty car park has had all of its wiring and cables stripped. There are screws all over the floor from all of the doors and fittings
that have been removed. Copper water tanks have been long ripped out of each apartment.” A number of Sligo residents also expressed anger at this project on popular internet forum, Boards.ie. One blogger says: “A friend of mine was one of the first/only people to move into The Mill, and it was appalling. They were on the top floor and the mildew, mould and damp was unbelievable. I think they only lasted a month or two there, but had horrible difficulty getting out despite the fact that the place was not fit for human habitation.” The apartments were built in place of an old flour mill, which had stood for over a century before being demolished. Potential residents were promised a stunning apartment block that promised the best standards for occupants, with prices starting at 320,000. The Mill Apartments now not only lie idle embodying the frivolousness of the Celtic Tiger; they have become an eyesore, with vandals tearing the place apart and using the building as a place to drink. This is hardly surprising when there is nothing stopping anyone from walking straight in the front door.
"all the living areas face out into the lovingly landscaped courtyard. Here children can play safely and always within view or you could just put your feet up in the sun and enjoy a good book." - from the brochure "Walk inside any of the apartments at the Mill and you'll start to notice things. There are ash veneered doors, a fully fitted kitchen with granite worktop and first class tiling throughout the kitchens and bathrooms. Bathrooms have semi recessed sinks and all bedrooms come with built in wardrobes." - from the brochure

A look inside the belly of the dead tiger
The only sounds are that of dying batteries in the smoke alarms " All of these apartments have generous living areas and cleverly laid out kitchens ... Whatever shape or style of apartment you'd like, you'll find it at the Mill." - from the brochure
"Often the problem with apartment living can be storage space. Having space for stuff shouldn't be a luxury and at the Mill it isn't." - from the brochure "All apartments at The Mill come with the latest in high tech spec. Intercom systems come as standard. What's more, broadband internet and cabling for state of the art entertainment systems has been fitted throughout. " from the brochure "They say God is in the detail and here attention to detail is second to none...at the Mill quality is everywhere you look. And that quality is protected by a 10-year home bond guarantee." - from the brochure
"And with the warm glow of Goldshield electric heating always on, these apartments are energy efficient too!" - from the brochure
The Mill has been designed to give a sense of community.

Last chance to see Cross of Cong in Mayo
The centenarian is Mrs Delia Henry from Charlestown, Co. Mayo, who came to the Museum specially to see the Cross of Cong after it opened. She was visiting with her son, Tony and his wife Pamela, both of whom live in Torrington, Connecticut.
FOLLOWING a hugely successful exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar, the Cross of Cong will return to Dublin in a couple of weeks time. The next two weeks will provide visitors with the final opportunity to see one of Ireland’s greatest treasures before it will go on display in the new Treasury Exhibition in the National Museum’s Kildare Street branch. Hundreds turned up for its unveiling on 30th March, and in the weeks and months following, thousands more visited the Museum to see Connacht’s greatest treasure. Museum Manager Keeper Tony

Candon said he had very mixed feelings about the departure of the Cross. “It has been a marvellous privilege to have had the Cross of Cong back in Connacht for the first time since it left here in the 1830s. The people of Connacht really took it to their hearts.” He added. “The Cross is a stunning example of medieval Irish craftsmanship at its best, a work of truly European quality. Made in Roscommon, possibly for Tuam in Co. Galway, but housed for most of its life in Cong, Co. Mayo, this Connacht treasure belongs to the whole people of Ireland and, I suppose, the Treasury in Kildare Street is

It is one of the greatest expressions of Irish craftsmanship in the twelfth century, and one of the great works of European art of this time. The Cross got its name as it was kept in the Augustinian Friary in Cong, County Mayo for centuries. It has been housed in what is now the National Museum of Ireland since the 1880s. The Cross remains at the Museum of Country Life only until Féile na Tuaithe on Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 May.

The biggest worry facing Irish teenagers is what they are going to do after they leave school. However a significant number are also seriously concerned about their family's finances, a new survey has found. The survey was carried out on behalf of Young Social Innovators (YSI), Ireland's largest civic action programme for young people. A total of 316 young people, aged 13-20, took part. It found that the biggest worry among teens was what they were going to do after they left school, followed by worries about school work. However, one-third cited their family's finances as their main worry. When asked what they most wanted in life, happiness was ranked the highest, followed by love and friendship. Success was more important to males, while safety was more important to females. The survey also found that while most Irish teenagers believe they can help to create a better Ireland, 53% do not feel that young people in Ireland are treated fairly and with respect. Almost half also believe that young people are not given opportuni-
ties to have their voices heart. Altogether, two-thirds of young people said they were proud to be Irish and to live here, however, they believe that their education does not teach some basic skills that are needed when leaving school. For example, 67% cited the absence of coping mechanisms for adulthood while 50% said their education lacked opportunities for independent thinking and innovation. "Society can be very quick to label young people as disinterested and self-centred. What we see through YSI and is reflected in these results are young people who are deeply interested and engaged in the future of this country. And, importantly, they are prepared to do something about it. "This study is very encouraging in the sense that young people believe they can contribute to creating a better, more equal Ireland. However the vast majority feel their voices and opinions are not being heard nor are they consulted by those in authority," commented YSI chief executive, Rachel Collier.

3-7 year olds most prone to accidents CHILDREN aged three to seven years are over three times more likely to have an accident that results in a personal injury claim than infants aged three or less, according to new research by InjuriesBoard.ie. The board’s assessment of 2010 awards to minors shows that childhood accidents were more than twice as likely to occur in April and August, than in December. In 2010, 615 minors were awarded compensation totaling 8.5million, or an average of 13,839.90. Awards ranged in value from 500 to over 170,000. Motor related accidents (at 79%) accounted for four times as many injuries
as public liability (21%). Girls accounted for 52% of awards while 48% of awards were made to boys. Dublin accounted for the largest portion of awards nationally, at 23.2%, followed by Cork at 11%. No awards were made to minors in county Leitrim. Professor Alf Nicholson, consultant paediatrician at Temple Street Hospital said injuries are a serious public health problem in Europe and more children over the age of one die of injuries than all other diseases combined. "For every child that dies from an injury, 160 are admitted to hospital and over 2,000 are seen in the emergency de-
partment – deaths are just the tip of the iceberg. Clearly no one wishes to be involved in an accident or to incur an injury. Simple life saving measures, including increased care and attention and always using appropriate seating restraints and wearing of helmets by cyclists, are vitally important.” Publication of claims data for minors coincides with today’s announcement that InjuriesBoard.ie is to sponsor Temple Street Hospital’s upcoming fund raising campaign, which goes live on Monday, 9th May 2011, to support services to injured and sick children.

Leave the Kids Alone
Media reports on amounts spent on first communion celebrations reflect poor journalism, not outrageous spending habits.
John McTigue
O
nce again the issue of money and First Communion has hit the news headlines. As 60,000 children across the country prepare to make their First Communion in the coming weeks the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) has published the results of a survey on the cash gifts children receive and the amount parents spend on the day. It has become something of a tradition that this story appears at the end of April/of May in anticipation of the vast transfer of wealth to children. Did you know though that it only began in June 2008? Ulster Bank pioneered the practice that year and reported that on average, children received 463 and that parents spent 748. The next appeared, courtesy of EBS Building Society, in May 2009.The next again from EBS appeared in May 2010 and this year both Ulster Bank and the ILCU released one of these surveys. All these surveys have been published by a banking institution. Now lets do some math. Ulster Bank say that on average children get 463 and the ILCU that they get 471. So lets say the average child gets 450 for their communion. So if you multiply that by the number of children, you get the figure of 27m being given to children each year for first communion. All of these surveys also deal with the savings habits of children and contain not so subtle references to their junior-saving schemes. Take this example from Ulster Bank’s 2008 survey. Commenting at the launch of the survey, Patrick Farrell, at Ulster Bank said: “The First Holy Communion is an important event for the majority of Irish children and their families. It’s encouraging to see that there’s clear evidence of a strong savings habit among
kids as 75% said that they saved some of the cash they got as presents.”
He continued, “We relaunched Henri Hippo back in April and to date we have seen a remarkable interest in our urfirst savings account. The purpose of these surveys is to get some of that 27m into their banks. They are simply cheap advertising. Now, there’s nothing wrong with this. Children should save their money and it is no harm really that banks plug their particular brand. What is insidious however is the lazy journalism behind it. Press releases from banks are being re-packaged as news and this is only the latest form of lazy reporting on first communion celebrations To prove this is lazy journalism lets look at the recent history of first communion discussion and reportage in the media. If the journalism is lazy it will reflect the zeitgeist instead of an objective reality that would not change fundamentally. Beginning in June 2008 we’ve had press releases from banks, reported by media. This reflects the cash-conscious saving-culture of our times. Move back to just April 2007 and you have
a RTE Afternoon Show segment on, ‘not stressing out’ over Communion day.The segment contains ostentatious references to ostentatious displays of wealth, before concluding with the kind of happy-go-lucky savings tips that are an inexplicable constant in the media culture. No reference to cash, saving, just a kind of lifestyle obsessed fauxsensibility. July 2006, and Times Online reviews an RTE show ‘It’s My Party’ that documents a family’s preparation for an outlandish communion party with the help of celebrity party planners. Barmy. In April 2005 we find a feature article in the Irish Independent, headlined, “Fake Nails and Spray Tans…..it’s First Communion Day’. Contained within are again, hyperbolic, anecdotal accounts of helicopters, high fashion gowns and diamond tiaras, set alongside cringe worthy Peig-like stories of the lucky-to-get-a-handme-down, which spoke to the supposed lost modesty of the past. While not all of these examples are pure news journalism they are still based on a supposed standard of research and should reflect reality at least in part. Worse again is that this lazy journalism exists because it is cheap. Newspapers are under pressure from all sides and a news story based on a press release, or non-representative anecdotes is inexpensive.
This speaks of a journalist being ground down by market forces. People won’t pay for good journalism and so long as that is the case, we will get press releases from Banks re-packaged as news. Beyond this again is the bigger picture, that somehow we’ve lost the run of ourselves and way too much is spent on first communion day. A child’s first communion is important. It happens when children have first learned that adult tendency to sit still through events they have no desire to be at. To stifle the urge to get up and go. As such it is the first event that moves children from the utter abandon of infancy and toddlerhood on the first step towards adolescence. Never mind receiving the host, the body of Christ for the first time. That’s weighty enough regardless of whether you credit it. In my family, communion celebrations were modest because of a small extended family and a fondness for barbecues. My better half celebrated her communion in a restaurant with a host of cousins, uncles, aunts and family friends. Something that must have cost her parents as much if not more than the average spend these days. In the past first communicants would go to Dublin airport to see the planes. Ostentatious for those living down the country? My father was trussed up in a decidedly goofy short-pants suit for his communion. Ostentatious for 1960s Ireland? Even Frank McCourt would have gone to see a film, and had some sweets for his communion in the 1930s Limerick slums only he missed the chance to collect money from the neighbours. It is a tradition, a milestone in a child’s life and is appropriately celebrated according to the means and tastes of the families involved. Reporting on this issue is laced with lazy journalism, reflecting contemporary moods rather than realities and it has established a narrative that a child’s first holy communion is unimportant or not worth marking. It is a sad reflection on the news industry, not the way first Holy Communion is celebrated.

Fifa sets goal-line system target
TruBlood Is Now Real Fifa has set a target date of July 2012 to approve goal-line technology systems that could be introduced before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Football's governing body has said candidates must pass a further two rounds of tests at a stadium of their choice. A Fifa group is to meet in July next year to analyse the results. Technology companies bidding for approval must tell Fifa in the next month if they want to take part in tests scheduled from September to December. Systems achieving 90% accuracy in "simulated match scenarios" could be invited for more tests in 2012.

AN Australian woman's life has been saved using a radical synthetic blood substitute made from cow plasma. In a world first, doctors at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne brought 33-year-old Tamara Coakley back from the brink after a car crash left her with severe blood loss and close to heart failure. Her spinal cord was almost severed, her lungs collapsed, her skull was fractured, several ribs were broken, as were her cheekbone and an elbow, and her spleen was ruptured. She was barely alive when she arrived at hospital. "I had one litre of blood left in my body," she said. In a last-ditch effort to save Ms Coakley's life, 10 units of the haemoglobin-based oxygen carrier HBOC201 were flown in from the US. The synthetic contains a molecule derived from cow plasma and restored her levels of haemoglobin, which carries oxygen to the tissues. Associate Professor Mark Fitzgerald said it marked an important step in the development of a viable blood alternative to address worldwide blood supply shortages. Unlike donor blood, it does not require crossmatching and can be stored without refrigeration for up to three years.
"It's a bit of science fiction," Dr Fitzgerald said. As a Jehovah's Witness, Ms Coakley was unable to have blood transfusions but was allowed blood substitutes. Dr Fitzgerald was familiar with the product being developed by the US Navy because he gave independent advice on a proposed research project five years ago. Working through the night, he negotiated with the drug manufacturer, OPK Biotech, the Therapeu-
tic Goods Administration, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service and airline carriers. The Alfred's ethics committee gave the import the green light, permission was granted under the TGA's special access scheme and the manufacturer paid the bill. HBOC201 is one of a number of blood substitutes being developed around the world. University of Melbourne Head of Department of Paediatrics Professor Paul Monagle said synthetic blood
could address donor supply issues and give people in remote areas access to life-saving treatments. Professor Monagle said any synthetic blood product would have to undergo rigorous testing before it moved from prototype to routine practice. Ms Coakley, who was in an induced coma during the crucial medical procedure, knows how close she came to death. "They did everything they could, I am so grateful."

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum and Ancestry.com are recruiting the public to help build the world's largest online database of information on victims of the Holocaust. The World Memory Project announced that it aims to make the museum's vast archive of documents easily searchable for free online. The museum has 170 million documents with information on more than 17 million people targeted by the Nazis. Many people search the archives in person to learn what happened to family members separated during the Holocaust. The project will dramatically expand access to those records. Ancestry will donate its proprietary software and manage the project's painstaking work of digitising millions of records. Museum visitors can help index records to make them searchable. Already, about 50,000 records have been indexed.
IOF in Germany got the designer bug when they developed this one. In this case, though, form is actually following function. The microscope is flat because it has
been entirely rethought, with several tiny lenses to simultaneously scan one image instead of one that scans and then groups together many images. "Our ultrathin microscope consists of not just one but a multitude of tiny imaging channels, with lots of tiny lenses arrayed alongside one another" Dr. Frank Wipperman, who managed the team, said in a news release. "Each channel records a tiny segment of the object at the same size for a 1:1 image." Tiny indeed. Each slice is a mere 300-by-300 µm² in size, and a computer program assembles all these tiny, neighboring image slices into one overall image. And with an optical length of 5.3mm, the device as a whole can be unusually flat. The team says the imaging system consists of three stacked glass plates with those tiny lenses applied to both the top and bottom of each. With an image size of 36-by-24 mm², it can capture matchbox-size objects in a single pass. Possible applications: taking high-res images of skin to detect malignant cells, or even verifying the authenticity of documents. The team will present the prototype microscope at the LASER World of PHOTONICS trade fair in Munich in late May. Series production of the device could begin in one to two years.

Guard dog gets titanium teeth
A prison guard dog has been fitted with titanium teeth in Australia after losing his real ones. Axel, from Melbourne, is ready to sink his teeth into any would-be escapees after being fitted with the metal canine teeth. They were fitted by veterinary dentist David Clarke after Axel shattered his teeth while biting into his bed board. Dr Clarke said: "So much is spent on training working dogs that it ends up much cheaper to repair a dental problem than retire the dog. "Prison dogs, police dogs, hunting, quarantine and customs dogs often suffer injuries in the course of their job." While Axel's terrifying teeth are the result of an accident other dog owners are going to great lengths to ensure their pampered pooches have the perfect 'bite'. Cosmetic dentistry is growing in popularity amongst dog owners whether it is to repair a broken tooth or to ensure their show dogs have the whitest, straightest teeth possible.

WHEN she went under the oral surgeon’s knife 18 months ago, Karen Butler sounded like any other lifelong resident of coastal Oregon. But when she shook off the anesthesia, the 56-yearold mother of five suddenly found herself speaking with a strange new accent — an odd mixture of Irish, Scottish and northern British, with perhaps a dash of Australian and South African for good measure. “It’s like a chameleon voice,” Butler told
Helicopter gunships up for grabs online
Meredith Vieira . “And I can’t make it be something that it isn’t. You can pretend to have a southern drawl and talk like John Wayne; I can’t. “Whatever pops out of my mouth is what pops out.” Though she has not undergone a full battery of neurological tests, Butler, by all appearances, is suffering a rare disorder called foreign accent syndrome. The condition affects only about 100 people worldwide.
Foreign accent syndrome is usually brought on, experts say, by a stroke, a brain injury or, in some cases, a tumor. But none of those seem to be a factor in Butler’s case: Preliminary tests, she said, showed that she had no other signs of brain injury. “When I talked to my doctor, he said, ‘There’s nothing wrong with you,’ ” Butler told Vieira. “No loss of motor skills, no problem with my eyes.”Butler said her strange symptoms developed immediately after her oral surgery. At first she thought she was just groggy and swollen, and that the strange and oddly amusing speech pattern would fade with time. “I had just had dental surgery,” she told Vieira. “You’re waking up, and your family’s making fun of your new, funny voice; at first, you think it’s just a result of that happening.” But then, she added, “A week goes by, the swelling goes down and … after a month … you’re looking for answers, because you know that this is just not normal.” Although the malady may be permanent, Butler and her husband, Glen, are not only taking it in stride — they’re actually enjoying it. “We’ve had more fun with this than anything else,” Glen Butler said. “Her sister came down the first weekend she was back on her feet, sat around, drank a couple of beers, and came up with terms and words to see if she could say them. [We] spent a weekend doing that.”

Cash-strapped Ukrainian military leaders are selling off their lethal fleet of helicopter gunships - on an eBay-style website. The deadly Russian-built Mil Mi-8 and Mi171 attack aircraft are armed to the teeth with guided anti-tank missiles, rockets and armourshredding chainguns. Punters can spend up to £7.3 million for a hardly used fully loaded model with cheaper, older transport choppers going for a bargain £266,000. "We can deliver anywhere," says the ad, posted by the Ukraine's defence ministry.
PIPPA Middleton's bottom looks set to go viral after pranksters posted a cheeky music mash-up on YouTube. Set to the song Shake Ya Ass by Mystikal, the video highlights Pippa's most eye-catching moments from the Royal Wedding. At one stage, it appears as though a clergyman is nodding in approval of the maid of honour's derriere, reports the Daily Mirror. Pippa caused a real stir in her bridesmaid dress and a Facebook group praising her assets has already attracted more than 10,000 fans. Her 'bum' also seemingly has its own Twitter account, @pippasass, which has just under 800 followers. The YouTube clip has already notched up nearly 60,000 hits in just one day. It is one of dozens of clips of Pippa at the wedding posted on the video-sharing website.

Waterpoint Operation Transformation comes to an end MONDAY night April 4th marked the end of a 12 week Operation Transformation Programme at Waterpoint in the form of a fashion show “Big Reveal” to friends and family of the six Leaders who were chosen earlier to participate in the programme. Just before Christmas Waterpoint placed an advertisement in a local newspaper for volunteers to participate in a 12-week Operation Transformation Programme. So, six brave souls walked into Waterpoint to commence twelve weeks of blood, sweat and tears. They were weighed in and photographed - a very public way to

deal with a very private issue. In return Waterpoint offered each participant free membership for 4 months. They were also offered free entrance to 12 weeks of GetTrimmer. All paid for classes such as the spinning classes and bootcamp were also offered free of charge to all volunteers. It represented a total investment by Waterpoint of 1,500. For the volunteers, however, it was an investment in their time and efforts to attend the weekly weighins, to change their eating habits, to sign up to an exercise programme and to push themselves week on week. As Maureen often reminds her classes, “There is no secret formula to losing weight – Eat Less and Move More”.

Hangover Remedies: What Works? By Megan Fennell Hair of the dog Even though the thought of a Bloody Mary may appeal to you, a Virgin Mary is a much better choice the morning after. "The worst thing to do is to have another drink," says Charles Cutler, MD, an internist in Norristown, Pa., and the chair of the American College of Physicians' board of governors.
Greasy breakfast There’s no scientific evidence that a heaping helping of bacon and eggs will ease hangover anguish, even though many people swear by it. "Greasy food is just going to give you heartburn," says Dr. Cutler, who recommends sticking with easy-to-digest foods such as toast or cereal. "You want to get calories right back into your system."
Alka-Seltzer Alka-Seltzer turns 80 in 2011, and the famous fizzy medicine has probably been used to treat hangovers for nearly that long. In 2001, the company even introduced a Morning Relief formulation specifically for hangovers. Coffee If you’re a regular coffee drinker, skipping java when you’re hung over may—or may not—be a good idea, Brick says. You may wind up layering a pounding caffeine-withdrawal headache on top of your hangover woes when you miss your regular morning fix. Water and sports drinks Conventional wisdom holds that the dehydration caused by heavy drinking is what makes you feel so sick the next day. In fact, experts actually know very little about what causes a hangover. Potential culprits include disrupted biological rhythms or even alcohol withdrawal, and research suggests that congeners—toxic substances found in alcohol, especially dark liquors such as whiskey—may also play a role. Exercise A gentle workout could help you feel better, if you can manage it (and that's a big IF). Sleep People sleep poorly after a night of drinking. Alcohol will put you to sleep quickly, but when it begins to wear off several hours later, the withdrawal your body feels can disrupt sleep and jolt you awake. While sleep deprivation won’t by itself cause a hangover, it can definitely make the symptoms feel worse.

Theatre Optique These motion toys soon began competing with the magic lantern. Among the midst of all of the competition, the man who created the praxiniscope developed the praxiniscope theatre which was known later known as the Theater Optique. This device was basically the exact same thing as a praxiniscope only it utilized a lantern which was used to project the images onto a large screen, making it possible for an audience to watch.
blast past from the
History of Film1800’s i n th e
Introuducing the Motion Toys
The Invention of Film
In 1885, two men named George Eastman and William H. Walker developed the very first reel of film. Film was sensitized paper created with a gelatin emulsion. One year later it was replaced by celluloid, which was a synthetic plastic material invented in the 1870's which was used in the chemical compound cellulose nitrate.
Eddison's Kintegraph and Kintescope
The Kintegraph was created be Thomas Edison's British employee William Kennedy Laurie Dickenson. It was a machine that could capture a sequence of images which was similar to a camera only it automatically took a picture of the moving image every half second. The images were then placed in his other invention, the kintescope. This device had a motor and shutter mechanism that ran a loop of film past an electric light source. The spectator would then peer through a small window to see the moving image.
AS the popularity for the magic lanterns increased, people in Europe and the U.S. wanted to be able to use magic lanterns at home. In fact, during the 1800's, no dinner party was complete without a magic lantern pres-
entation. Various image projection devices proliferate for enjoying at the home were created. These were small devices called motion toys that were very different from the standard magic lantern. All of the
origins of these devices lay in scientific experimentation. One of these experiments was based on a new concept (for the 1800's) called the persistence of vision, which is the eye's capacity to retain an image, even after its source
has been removed. This idea prompted various efforts to built mechanisms that could make separate still images into a single moving image. From this concept, a number of inventions for projecting images were created.
The First Motion Picture Ever Made In the year 1872, a man named Eadweard Muybridge began experimenting on capturing moving images. This man placed twelve cameras on a race horse track, spread thread across the track, and attached the thread into contact with a camera's shutter. Once the horse ran across the track, it's legs broke the threads, causing the cameras to operate in sequence. The ending results were 12 photos showing a horse's gait. With an invention of his called the Zoopraxiscope, he was able to quickly project these images, creating what is known as motion photography and the first movie to ever exist.

ON A WING AND A PRAYER!

The extraordinary story of the life and times of the late Monsignor James Horan, builder of Knock Airport, is to be retold later this year when ‘On A Wing and a Prayer-The Musical’ takes to the stage for its premiere at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar. Author Terry Reilly, who wrote the best-selling book On A Wing and a Prayer, has adapted the work for a stage production that will bring to life the many great undertakings and amazing achievements of Monsignor Horan, told in word and song. Cynthia Clampett, Chief Executive Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation based at Knock, said the Palliative Care Service in Mayo and Roscommon was heavily dependent on voluntary funding. th comfort, dignity and respect at its core. The musical traces the career of Monsignor Horan (born 1911died 1986) whose life was spent addressing the spiritual and temporal needs of his flock. He got houses fixed, roads repaired, forests planted, took on the authorities, and even built a ballroom of romance to which Old Nick was reputed to have paid a visit - without paying the admission fee! His last great fight, his biggest and most controversial campaign by far, was when he started, at the age of 70, to build an international airport in 1981 on what was described as 'a foggy, boggy hill'. His reason for the airport was to provide badly needed infrastructure for an impoverished, neglected region. Initially Government blessed his enterprise, but then did a series of U-turns as the tide of Dublin 4 opinion turned, forcing the withdrawal of Exchequer support and leaving an ageing parish priest to raise many millions to finish his final project. e succeeded in opening his dream airport in 1986, but the effort hastened his demise and he passed away in Lourdes a few months later. Ironically, his coffin was the first into Knock Airport as thousands flocked to pay homage to their hero. Of course, his vision, his 0310 dream, succeeded as he said it would. In the interim millions of people have used the Airport, and countCatered for You less jobs are being created in an area once known as the Black Triangle in East Mayo. On A Wing and a Prayer- The Musical is a tribute to the heroic endeavor of an old man in a hurry. It also heralds the 100th anniversary of his birth to be celebrated in May 2011. Jools Holland is excitable by nature, but when he spots a new artist who has what he considers “it,” his enthusiasm goes off the scale. To go by his reaction to Imelda May, she has “it” in spades. “I’ve got to have you on the show,” he told her after seeing her play live – and so, a couple of months ago, she duly found herself on “Later With Jools Holland,” wowing an audience who included Jeff Beck, Elbow and Roots Manuva. Beck, in fact, made a point of telling Holland that he was only there to see Imelda. Having fallen in love with rockabilly and the blues as a nine-year-old in Dublin – the only kid in her class who wasn’t into a-Ha and Wet Wet Wet – she’s turned them into a cool, swinging fusion that’s both classic and oddly modern. That’s not just PR fluff: though her musical heart lies in early rock’n’roll (she’s partial to the clothes, too - her wardrobe is stuffed with leopardprint cardigans and tight bad-girl jeans), she puts a 21st century spin on things. Her debut album,“Love Tattoo,” is lusciously retro, but as fresh as 2009. And her live gigs, where she sings and plays bodhran, are fierce. She played on stage with Sharon Shannon in The Royal Theatre this Christmas and this June goes "Boom Boom" as she opens the June Bank Holiday Castlebar Music Festival on Friday 3rd June 2011. Her own favourites are the delicate “Falling in Love with You Again,” which was inspired by her husband (and guitarist in her band) Darrel Higham (“It’s about how you can fall in love with the same person many times”), the bluesy, sultry “Knock 123” – you’d never know it was about a ghost who doesn’t let being dead stop her from loving the boy she left behind, an idea Imelda got from watching Derek Acorah on TV one night – and “Johnny Got a Boom-Boom,” a big, bawdy stomper. “My A&R asked me if ‘boom-boom’ was rude, and I said, ‘Tom, you’ve got a dirty mind’.” The prestigious Irish World Newspaper Awards crowned Imelda 2008’s Best Female Newcomer. It’s not much of a stretch to see more acclaim ahead in 2009. Tickets are 33.60 available on www.ticketmaster.ie as well as from the Royal Theatre Box Office on 0818 300 000.

LONDON THEATRE AT THE LINENHALL London Classic Theatre makes a highly anticipated return visit to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar with a stunning reworking of Ibsen’s classic play “Ghosts” on Thursday 19th May at 8.00pm. Helene Alving is preparing for the opening of an orphanage, built in memory of her late husband. Her beloved artist son, Oswald, has returned from Paris to honour the occasion, but his long-awaited homecoming rapidly descends into tragedy as his presence triggers the exposure of a dark story of hypocrisy and betrayed love. Writ-
ten in 1881 by one of the fathers of modern drama, Henrik Ibsen’s study of hidden passions, family secrets and moral hypocrisy remains as dramatically alive as ever in award-winning Irish playwright and poet Frank McGuinness’ vital new version. “Ghosts” is the second production in London Classic Theatre’s Modern Takes season, presenting European classic plays with a contemporary twist, as seen recently in LCT’s dazzling production of “After Miss Julie”. Thursday 19th May at 8.00pm. Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733

Carrick as a Commercial Centre Today, the town's retail landscape is almost complete, with the presence of Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and various other well known retail outlets, drawing shoppers to its hinterland. Carrick has become a progressive centre of commercial activity helped to a large
extent by the regions favourable tax designation status. Among its biggest employers are Bank of America and Masonite. The lively market town has a strong retail and services sector, attracting numerous prestigious companies to its soil. Notably; Supervalu,
Heatons, Woodies, Bay, Oasis, Menary’s, Supermacs, KFC and Esquires. Carrick-on-Shannon offers great support services with a number of mortgage brokers, insurance brokers and solicitors based in the town. It also is a financial hub with; Permanent TSB, Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, National Irish Bank, Midlands and Western Building Society and Bank of America operating in the town. Leitrim County Council with the help of funding from the Irish Government and EU continue to invest in infrastructure which enables both indigenous and foreigndirect investment to locate in Carrick-on-Shannon. Participation in 3rd level education from County Leitrim is exceptionally high and the county as a whole boasts an enthusiastic and educated workforce. Carrick-on-Shannon is home to a third level initiative, which offers people a chance to study top quality courses from a number of Universities and IT's across the country on their doorstep.
Carrick-on-Shannon today Leitrim County Development Board and the Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce work hard to ensure that Carrick-on-Shannon thrives as a commercial hub and an attractive place to live and work. The County Development Board incorporates 'The Economic Development Group', which is comprised of enterprise development agencies and chaired by the County Manager. The group focuses on overseeing the implementation of economic development projects, as well as working on joint initiatives to promote investment, entrepreneurship and job creation in the county. A town seeped in history Carrick-on-Shannon is steeped in history, dating back to the ancient strongholds of the O'Rourkes of Breffni and old time rivals O'Raghnaills of north Roscommon. Carrick-onShannon was granted a Royal Charter and named a borough with its own seal in 1607. It's historic background is so strong, that Carrick-onShannon has a sign-posted historical walking tour of the town, which allows visitors to discover its historical buildings, in particular The Famine Graveyard, Workhouse and Garden of Remembrance. Leitrim was one of the worst affected counties during the famine, losing a huge proportion of its population to disease, starvation and emigration. The Garden of Remembrance, which was opened by President Mary McAleese, remembers the thousands of Leitrim people who perished in the great hunger of the late 1840's. Carrick-on-Shannon is a mecca
for historical architecture, with preserved buildings from earlier centuries such as The Court House, built in 1821 and the Protestant Church built in 1827. The old Courthouse was the creation of Architect William Farrell, who also designed Colebrook House, Co. Fermanagh, the residence of Lord Brookborough, former Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. It is not now seen to best advantage as the removal for safety reasons of four massive Doric pillars and the rest of the portico has left it with a rather bare appearance. Since its erection it has been the centre of local government and administration for Co. Leitrim.Leading from the Old Courthouse is the Town Clock and St. George's Terrace. As the name suggests, Carrick-on-Shannon has had a long association with the St. George Family. The St. George Family resided at 'Hatley Manor'. The Georgian home was erected in 1830 and can be seen along the trail. The Costello Memorial Chapel is based on Bridge Street and is the smallest chapel in Europe and the second smallest in the entire world. It was built in the 19th century by a rich merchant named Edward Costello as a memorial and burial vault for his wife, Josephine. The 16 foot long, 12 foot wide and 30 feet high chapel holds the two coffins on each side and covered with slabs of reinforced glass. Carrick-on-Shannon was the home of Carrick Castle, but sadly no more. However, the remains of Carrick Castle can still be seen on the N4 bypass, near the Carrick Bridge.
