OMEN drivers are bracing themselves for significant increases in insurance premiums of up to €100 by the end of the year under an EU ruling banning gender discrimination. New life insurance premiums for women are also expected to increase by up to one third in line with the ruling. Women currently pay much less for insurance than men because statistics show them to be less risky drivers. But the ruling will ban companies from charging different insurance rates to men and women from December. Castlebar-based County Councillor and Chairman of the Consumers Association of Ireland, Michael Kilcoyne, speaking to North West Express on Tuesday, said the hardpressed consumer should not have to suffer increases; rather the insurance rates for men should be reduced in line with those of women to meet the requirements of the EU Directive. “The insurance industry should be able to do a proper analysis of the risks involved. There is no evidence to suggest that middle-aged men are a greater risk than middle-aged women when it comes to car insurance, anyway. There are many, many male drivers who never had accidents. “I fear the insurance industry will use the opportunity to fleece the over-burdened consumer even more. They should be no need for this”, said Mr. Kilcoyne. Continued on Page 2

Women Facing Insurance Hikes Continued from front page According to a detailed, Europewide study by economic consultants, Oxera, men will experience a very small reduction in premiums as a consequence of the ruling and a motor industry source here said young female drivers may suffer even larger increases of up to 25%. That’s because Ireland, like the UK, has a particularly large gap between male and female premiums – with young men here sometimes paying twice as much for car insurance. For example, a male driver aged 21 could expect to get a car insurance quote of €1,632, while a woman of the same age, with the same car, would be quoted just €885 with the same insurer. The Oxera study examined countries that have already introduced unisex pricing and found that in Belgium, for instance,

premiums for young females rose by 7% - 15% while for men they fell by only 3%-4%. The anticipated rise in premiums for women follows a host of recent hikes in the cost of running a family car. These include a 2% insurance levy and the rising cost of petrol, diesel, car tax, VAT and carbon taxes, making the estimated cost of running a car over €100 for the average family. The Irish Insurance Federation admit that while young women will definitely be “the big losers” young men will not necessarily enjoy a corresponding drop in motor premiums. The contention is that substantially cheaper rates could lead to a surge in young men getting policies, which would lead to more claims and costs. Ominously, the Oxera Report also predicts that life insurance premiums for women will increase by 34%, and pension annuities could rise by 5%.

THE 6th National Carers Week is being celebrated across the west and north-west (from June 18th – 23rd) with many appropriate events recognizing the contribution of thousands of family carers in the region. These Family Carers are usually immediate relatives, who provide very high levels of care, at home, for children and adults with severe disabilities, frail older people and people who are terminally ill. Census figures indicate that

there are approximately 1,700 carers in Co. Sligo, 1,205 in Leitrim, while the numbers soar to 5,440 in Mayo. This unique show is one not to be missed for visitors to the west of Ireland this summer. Based on the real-life story of the Pirate Queen Grace O’ Malley or Gráinne Mhaol ‘The Legend of

Gráinne Mhaol’ summer music show runs every Monday and Wednesday night until the end of September. The show has attracted and entertained thousands of visitors from all over the world since its maiden voyage three years ago and is now regarded as a ‘must see’ for all tourists visiting the west of Ireland. This powerful and passionate celebration of Irish music, song and dance is an inspiring epic, reliving the voyage of the iconic Irish legend Gráinne Mhaol throughout history. Grainne Mhaol (c1530-c1603) is a legendary historical figure in Irish history. Pirate, chieftain, lover and mother, Grainne Mhaol was one of the last Irish clan leaders to resist the English conquest of Gaelic Ireland. The show traces, through music, song and dance, life, loves and encounters of this amazing Mayo woman, Grace O’Malley. The show is full of energy and enthusiasm and guarantees to keep audiences of all ages gripped from start to finish as it blends the old and the new; the contemporary and the ancient, the Sean Nós dancing against modern step dancing. The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol summer show is an incredible, unique, entertainment show that combines Irish dances and Sean Nós dancing with the passionate Latino rhythms of Tango and Salsa in a performance of strength and

passion. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD described the show as a key tourism enterprise for Mayo. “This is a superb summer show and is a very important tourism initiative for Westport and Mayo and apart from attracting thousands of people to the county each summer it also creates twenty additional jobs for the local economy from June to September,” commented Minister Ring. The Gráinne Mhaol spectacular summer show at Hotel Westport contains a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland. Apart from Lord of the Dance fiddle player Cora Smyth and renowned balladeers James Kilbane and Jenny Mulvey the show also features World Champion dancers Brian Cunningham, Liam Scanlon, Roisin Timoney and Pollyanna Guedes. All-Ireland champion banjo player Micheal Healy and his sister Sinead as well as Sean Horsman are all onboard again this year for another magical and mythical voyage into Mayo. Tickets for the show cost €25 and are available from www.grainnemhaol.com and Hotel Westport at (098) 25122 or www.hotelwestport.ie. The show runs every Monday and Wednesday night for the entire summer at Hotel Westport. Shows starts at 9.00pm.

Swimmers rescued by RNLI in Sligo THE Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat, William Henry Liddington, was on hand to rescue 11 swimmers who got into difficulty while taking part in the annual Triathlon at Mullaghmore, Sligo, on Saturday morning. The lifeboat was on exercise in the area as the event was taking place. The swim event of the triathlon, jointly organised by the Mullaghmore Sailing and Triathlon Clubs, started just after 10.30 am in cool conditions with a northerly wind blowing through the village. By 11.10 am the lifeboat crew had assisted 3 swimmers with the number reaching 10 by 11.45am and 11 total by 11.50am. All swimmers were assisted to shore but did not require medical attention. Martin Caldwell of Mullaghmore Sailing Club said afterwards "we were delighted the Bundoran RNLI Lifeboat was in the area and were able to assist our own safety boats. We had a capacity field of 500 triathletes taking part and the tough conditions meant more swimmers than usual required assistance. "Safety is an absolute priority in an event such as this and having Bundoran RNLI in the bay was a terrific support. The event, which is in its 11th year, is one of the most popular triathlons in the country and it is a showcase for some of the country's top athletes."

Club Mayo Sports - New Sports Funding initiative launched

John O'Mahony TD., pictured at the launch of Club Mayo Sports in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin, with Gerry Kelly, PRO Club Mayo Sports and Mayo Sports Stars - Intercounty footballer Chris Barrett, Fiona McHale Mayo Ladies Football team, European Boxing Champion Ray Moylette, and Formula Sheane Racing Driver Foxford's Sean Hynes. O

n Wednesday night of last week Club Mayo Sports was launched and opened for business with the aim of generating funding for the wider array of sports in Mayo. Addressing those in attendance at the launch in Dublin’s Burlington Hotel, Gerry Kelly, PRO, outlined how the scheme will work and who might benefit. “We know how hard it is, in the present economic climate, for clubs and sporting organisations to raise funds and at the same time there are so many clubs and individuals flying the Mayo flag on the national and international stage who all could do with, and deserve, that extra bit of funding that make the difference. Club Mayo Sports may be able to provide that little extra funding where and when it is needed”. This was a theme echoed by Deputy John O’Mahony T.D. who attended the

launch and spoke so passionately about the need for a more co-ordinated and balanced approach to the funding needs of all sports in the counties. Deputy O’Mahony explained that the funding available to sports is limited in these difficult financial times and volunteer groups such as Club Mayo Sports can help. He encouraged Mayo people, wherever they may live or work to “get involved in the network that Club Mayo Sports has in place and to tap into that network for their benefit”. The organisers of Club Mayo Sports aim to use this network both in Ireland and abroad to participate in various fundraising activities with a view to disbursing the funds raised to sports teams, individuals and in support of specific events. Any sport, any team or any individual sports star can apply for funding and each application will be considered based on

its merits and provided, of course, that adequate funds are available at the time. “We do not see ourselves as the bail-out fund for all the requests we are likely to receive or being able to provide funds in all cases but we hope to contribute to the most deserving applications as best we can” according to David Rafter, a member of the Organising Committee. Some of the established and rising Mayo sports stars that attended on the might gave an idea of the variety of sports that the Club Mayo Sports idea has already attracted and acted as a reminder of the wide range of sports established within the County. We all know of our European boxing champion Ray Moylette. We know we have some of the top talent in Ladies GAA. We have Sean Hynes, from Foxford, who is rapidly making his mark in the competitive world of motor racing. Then there is Jason Devaney from Ballina, the emerging Irish talent in the world of snooker and young Aaron McLoughlin from Swinford in karate. The county football and hurling teams represent the county proudly every year on the national stage. All of these sports and many more may have more stars and successes in the making and as John O’Mahony commented “it would be a pity to see some great potential talents falling by the wayside for lack of funding”. Club Mayo Sports is a novel idea. Apart from the primary attraction of fundraising it will bring additional profile and promotion to all sports in the county. It is not a club with formal membership but a focal point for Mayo people everywhere to join a network and ensure that sport in the county gets the support it needs and successes we can be proud of. Fundraising has already commenced and the organisers hope that that it won’t take too long until some worthy applicants can be supported. Details of Club Mayo Sports, its fundraising plans and the application process for funding can be found at www.clubmayo.ie . Don’t forget when visiting the website to show your support by joining the Club Mayo Sports network – it’s free.

A heard-broken Roscommon couple visiting the grave of their baby daughter who they had just buried, were shocked to discover the theft of the only photographs they had of their baby daughter. Roscommon Gardai have issued an appeal for information in relation to theft of the photographs from the young couple’s car while they visited her grave. A thief broke into their car outside Strokestown Cemetery by smashing a passenger window and snatching the mother’s handbag containing cash, credit cards and a black Apple iPhone 4S, which had the only photographs the couple have of their baby girl. The Gardai are now appealing to the public to assist them in recovering the photographs. “The couple buried their daughter on Sunday, and went to visit the grave on their own on Bank Holiday Monday. What really has upset them is they had taken pictures of their baby with the iPhone before she was buried and they are the only pictorial record they have of their baby,” said Sgt Paul McDermott, Roscommon Crime Prevention Officer. Anyone with information can contact Roscommon Garda station, 090 6638300.

Silenced Galway priest set to return to public ministry

Fr Tony Flannery A Galway Redemptorist priest who was silenced by the Vatican because of his criticisms of the Church in relation to their response to clerical sex abuse in Ireland will be returning to public ministry this week. Fr Tony Flannery, who is based in the Redemptorist Monastery in Esker, Galway, will be welcomed back by his congregation and colleagues there on Tuesday with the start of the Order’s annual Novena. Fr Flannery, along with two Redemptorist colleagues, Fr Brendan O’Rourke and Fr Patrick O’Keeffe, will be preaching at the Novena, which focuses on the virtues of living a good Christian life. The Attymon native publicly supported Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s call in the Dáil for the Catholic Church to apologise for its handling of clerical sex abuse. Fr Flannery was a regular contributor to the Redemptorist magazine Reality, in which he aired his views and support of the Taoiseach. Just before Easter, Fr Flannery was ordered to take time off for spiritual reflection, which he did. Part of that dictat was that he stop writing for Reality, after the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith objected to some things he had written in various articles and on the Order’s website. Following almost two months away from his ministry, negotiations with his Redemptorist superiors have led to his return. He said last week: “I haven’t ministered since Easter but I will be returning next Tuesday on the first day of the Novena and I will be preaching at that every third day, alternating with my colleagues,” he said.

Westport could be “Ireland’s Best Place to Live” WESTPORT town in Mayo has made it to the last five in a shortlist in the Irish Times competition to find The Best Place to Live in Ireland. The top five includes one village, one small town, one large town, one city, and one suburb or urban village. Westport is the only Connaught location chosen and has been named as the Best Small Town to live in. In competition, also, for the top spot is the village of Ardara in Co Donegal, in addition to Killarney, Co Kerry; Cork city; and Rathmines in Dublin. These five locations will be visited by the judges over the coming week, and the overall winner will be announced next Monday, June 25th. For the Best Place to Live in Ireland competition, The Irish Times invited people to nominate the place they lived in, and explain its appeal. From early April until late May, the competition attracted 563 entries from members of the public across 32 counties. Westport’s entry was submitted by John O’Callaghan, who used the lyricism of the late writer, John O’Donohue, to encapsulate the town’s appeal: ‘a place could have huge affection

for those who dwell there’ (Divine Beauty) and ‘place is not simply location’. In his citation, Mr O’Callaghan wrote: “Westport has it all. Lovely people, fantastic amenities, gorgeous scenery, a thriving arts and cultural scene, great sports and leisure facilities, a palpable community spirit, a choice of good restaurants, fine schools, a caring social services centre, an active retirement group, flourishing overseas partnerships and more.”

He continued: “There’s always something happening in Westport. The Rolling Sun Literary festival, Gaelforce and Sea to Summit adventure events and the Westport Street Festival every summer, to name but a few. Westport Arts festival always has a great programme and the local St Patrick’s Drama Group have sell-out productions.” He also cited the holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, as an inspiration for the many the artists and visitors.

Public Meeting to address suicide in the West

A

public meeting will take place on this Thursday, 21st June in the Harbour Hotel, New Dock Road, Galway City at 7pm to discuss the feasibility of setting up a suicide intervention and crisis centre in the West. There will be two main speakers. Managing Director of JFC, John

John Concannon

Concannon who appeared in RTÉ’s The Secret Millionaire will speak at the meeting. John is the driving force behind efforts to set up a Pieta House in the West. Joan Freeman, CEO and Founder of Pieta House, will also speak at the meeting. Pieta House, the suicide and selfharm crisis centre, provides a professional, face to face, free of charge therapeutic service for people in the acute stages of distress. The organisation has seen an 81% increase in the number of people who sought their support in 2011. “Many families in the West of Ireland have been left devastated by the loss of loved ones through suicide in recent times,” said John Concannon, Managing Director of JFC. “This tragic loss of life can be prevented if these people have somewhere to go for help during times of crisis. With the continued help of the local community, we hope to reach our fundraising target and have a Pieta House West facility in Galway as soon as possible,” he said. Pieta House’s vision is that noone in Ireland should be more than 100 kilometres from a Pieta House centre where they can avail of the clinical services at that time of crisis.

AFTER months of qualifying matches, years of training, hours of travelling and thousands of euro spent travelling Ireland Euro 2012 dreams have come to an abrupt halt. While the performance of each and every players has been analysed, manager Giovanni Trapatonni’s tactics discussed and criticised the main memory of the Euros 2012 from the Irish perspective looks set to be the overwhelming chanting and singing of the Irish support following the Spanish game in Gdansk. Ireland’s ability cannot be compared to that of Spain’s who are in many eyes, the masters of today’s football. Having won the last World Cup and Euros Spain were never going to see their repeat hopes dashed by an Irish side, lacking any major world players. Their goal, a mere four minutes into the game, reiterated the fact that it was set to be the night Ireland’s campaign ended, yet the support by the Irish fans was akin to Spain’s football, world class. From the moment the teams entered the pitch the Irish supporters were dominant. While the Spanish team had almost equal numbers in the crowd and indeed at times they almost matched the Irish enthusiasm, the Irish team played with the crowd as their 12th player. Ninety minutes later having witnessed their team bow out 4-0 to a technical Spanish team, from which we struggled to hold possession from, the Irish fans were as passionate and strident

“We’re very grateful to have John Concannon driving the campaign to bring a Pieta House to the West of Ireland. He is a champion of the West and he is shining a light on the issue of suicide in this part of the country,” said Joan Freeman, CEO and Founder and of Pieta House. “Pieta House have a proven model of care for suicide intervention and our specially trained therapists are equipped to deal with people in crisis. Our unique clinically based model aims to reduce suicide by helping patients get through that critical phase when suicide becomes a plan rather than just an idea,” she said. Nine out of ten people who take their own life are responding to a life crisis. Since Pieta House opened their doors in 2006 they have helped over 6,000 people across their five centres in Dublin and Limerick. The demand for the services of Pieta House continues to grow. In the last five years the organisation has opened four more centres – outreach centres in Finglas, Tallaght and Ballyfermot in Dublin as well as a second national centre in Limerick. To sing or not to sing? as ever. While the Spanish support celebrated their triumph they were silenced by the echoes of ‘Ole Ole’ as Europe was overwhelmed by the devotion of fans who had just endured a second class performance from their team. Roy Keane, once again divided the nation as he does, the following day as he condemned the actions of such fans as suggesting Ireland enters such competitions with the objective of having a good time rather than winning. Many agree with the Cork man, claiming that such jubilance after a harrowing defeat over-rides the football aspect of the competition. Yet in times when our country is striving to survive, our community spirit rapidly evaporating and antisocial behaviour is becoming more prevalent, surely we should encapsulate the commitment and patriotism shown by the travelling fans. While Ireland’s performance was weak in comparison to Spain’s who looked at ease throughout, Robbie Keane will never compare to Fernando Torres and John O’Shea and Iniesta are worlds apart, there is no doubt that every single player wore their Irish jersey with pride and did their absolute best on the pitch. Children are encouraged by their parents endlessly that it’s the participation and not the result that matters so the fans decisions to appreciate the effort by the players should be seen as symbolic of our parents mottos.

Likewise, in such severe and challenging economic circumstances many fans went without luxuries in recent months in order to support their country. Ireland may not have won the Euros and were indeed the first team to exit but the

display by the Irish support is something we, as a nation, shall and should cherish for future tournaments to come. It brought the tournament deeper than football, the crowds closer than rivals and the world marvelled at the Irish.

CASTLEBAR-BORN singer Elaine Madden brings her wonderful vocal talents to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for a highly anticipated evening of song on Thursday 28th June at 8.00pm. Elaine’s reputation as a talented vocalist has been steadily growing both in musical circles and among the general public. For this special night of music, she explores the evolution of the Irish love song. Although interested in many genres, Elaine’s love of Irish-grown music has inspired her to take a closer look at the Irish penchant for the Amhrán Grá. Accompanying her will be fellow vocalist and guitarist Barry Jennings, who, having found success with local band Social Welfare, will be showcasing his talents as a soloist and as part of the duet. With influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to Michael Jackson, he is as eclectic as he is talented. His rich tenor voice is a perfect match for Elaine's vocals and this combination promises to make this a night not to be missed. Elaine Madden performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday 28th June at 8.00pm. Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733 The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible.

Tough little planet we live on: At any time there are some 44,000 storms; lightning strikes the earth 100 times every second, and there are on average 35 earthquakes per day. Those are all acts of God, one may argue, but us humans don’t make it any easier on mother earth. Every year more than 2 million cases of arson is reported, and more than a million trees are chopped just to make toothpicks. Not all is gloom, however: 200 million couples make love (and 400,000 babies are born) every day

Slavery Throughout history some 200 million people were enslaved. For more than 1000 years, Arab traders transported small groups of African slaves; the first record of a sizable slave trade dates to the 7th century. The majority of African slaves were acquired through wars by African rulers. One famous traders, Madam Tinubu, grew from rags to riches from it. But another African trader who called himself Grandy King George once specified a payment of only “one lucking-glass, six foot long by six foot wide,” an armchair, a stool and a cane. Not well known – and hardly spoken about – is that millions of Europeans were also traded as slaves. In the 17th and 18th centuries large numbers of poor whites were kidnapped on the streets of Europe and sold in the West Indies and elsewhere. Most countries in the world, including African countries, traded with slaves. Excluded were Russia and the Balkan countries. And, unlike what you might have expected, the slave trade is very active today still. Steam and Jell-O Heron of Greece invented steam power in 50 BC. But the leaders of the day thought that it would cause unemployment and the invention ran out of steam. The steam engine reappeared in the 1600s in Ferdinand Verbiest’s steam car and then years later again, in 1804, when English inventor Richard Trevithick introduced the steam locomotive in Wales. In 1815, George Stephenson built the world’s first workable steam locomotive. In 1845, another steam engine manufacturer, Peter Cooper of New York (who built the Tom Thumb, the first American steam locomotive), concocted a gelatine dessert made almost entirely of sugar… which became popular as JellO. 18. Bad hair day Having a bad hair day? Spare some thought for your greatgrandparents because in their time it took about 10 hours to complete the process of waving hair to withstand washing, weather and time. Compton’s Online Library explained that the advent of electricity sparked a major change in the concept of hairdressing when in London in 1906 the hairdresser Charles Nestlé invented the permanent-wave machine. The bulky machine – about the size of today’s fridge – took almost 20 minutes to get to usable heat and up to 10 hours to complete perming. Still, it was great 20th-century technology. The next year a Parisian chemistry student, Eugène Schueller founded the company L’Oréal, created a dye to cover gray hair with natural-looking colors in a permanent process, and made life a little more fun for a lot of people.

Congratulations!

naturalhealth Dealing with Hayfever By Megan Fennell

Symptoms The effect of hay fever can vary greatly: some people may only be mildly afflicted, whereas others may suffer greatly. Common symptoms include: coughing, headaches, itching nose, mouth, eyes, throat, skin, or any area exposed to the allergen, runny nose (and occasionally nosebleeds), impaired smell (and thus sensitivity to flavours), sneezing, stuffy nose (nasal congestion), watering eyes and/or plugged up ear canals. Sore throat, wheezing, fever, cross-reactivity allergy to some fruits and conjunctivitis Signs and tests The history of the person's symptoms is important in diagnosing allergic rhinitis, including whether the symptoms vary according to time of day or the season, exposure to pets or other allergens, and diet changes. Allergy testing may reveal the specific allergens the person is reacting to. Skin testing is the most common method of allergy testing. This may include intradermal, scratch, patch, or other tests. Less commonly, the suspected allergen is dissolved and dropped onto the lower eyelid as a means of testing for allergies. (This test should only be done by a physician, never the patient, since it can be harmful if done improperly.) Sufferers might also find that cross-reactivity occurs. For example, someone allergic to birch pollen may also find that they have an allergic reaction to the skin of apples or potatoes. A clear sign of this is the occurrence of an itchy throat after eating an apple or sneezing when peeling potatoes. This occurs because of similarities in the proteins of the pollen and the food. There are many cross-reacting substances. Prevention Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to decrease allergic symptoms. Remain indoors in the morning and evening when outdoor pollen levels are highest. Wear face masks designed to filter out pollen if you must be outdoors. Keep windows closed and use the air conditioner if possible in the house and car. Do not dry clothes outdoors. Avoid unnecessary exposure to other environmental irritants such as ins ect sprays, tobacco smoke, air pollu tion, and fresh tar or paint. Avoid mowing the grass or doing other yard work, if possible. Regular hand- and face-washing re moves pollen from areas where it is likely to enter the nose. A small amount of Vaseline around the eyes and nostrils will stop some pollen from entering the areas that cause a reaction A very small amount of Vicks VapoRub cream around the eyes will effectively reduce the itching (however: vapors will cause a cold sensation & watery eyes) Treatment The goal of treatment is to reduce allergy symptoms caused by the inflammation of affected tissues. The best "treatment" is to avoid what causes your allergic symptoms in the first place. The most appropriate medication depends on the type and severity of symptoms. Specific illnesses that are caused by allergies (such as asthma and eczema) may require other treatments.

The information provided to you on this page is for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical advice and it is important that you do not make medical decisions without first consulting your doctor or other healthcare professional.

Options include the following: Fast-acting strong antihistamines such as drugs including chlorphenamine which relieve the symptoms after a hayfever "attack". Short-acting antihistamines, which are generally over-the-counter (non-prescription), often relieve mild to moderate symptoms, but can cause drowsiness. A pediatrician should be consulted before using these medicines in children, as they may affect learning. One formerly prescription medication, loratadine, is now available over the counter in many countries. It does not tend to cause drowsiness or affect learning in children. Azelastine is the only antihistamine available as a nasal spray. Longer-acting antihistamines cause less drowsiness, can be equally effective, and usually do not interfere with learning. These medications include fexofenadine and cetirizine New leukotriene receptor antagonists, such as montelukast (Singulair) and zafirlukast (Accolate) have proven very effective in dealing with allergic rhinitis, without the common sideeffects of the first-generation antihistimines, such as drowsiness. These medicines are also long-acting, and are recommended to be taken once-daily. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are effective and somewhat safe, and may be effective without oral antihistamines. These medications include fluticasone, budesonide, mometasone, triamcinolone and beclomethasone. Topical decongestants may also be helpful in reducing symptoms such as nasal congestion, but should not be used for long periods as stopping them after protracted use can lead to a rebound nasal congestion (Rhinitis medicamentosa). Cromolyn sodium (or cromoglycate) is a drug that stabilizes mast cells and prevent their de-

granulation and subsequent release of histamine. It is available as a nasal spray (Nasalcrom) for treating hay fever. Eye drop versions of cromolyn sodium (Crolom) are available for allergic conjunctivitis. "Allergy shots" (Hyposensibilization, immunotherapy) are occasionally recommended if the allergen cannot be avoided and if symptoms are hard to control. This includes regular injections of the allergen, given in increasing doses (each dose is slightly larger than the previous dose) that may help the body adjust to the antigen. These tend to be offered as a last resort as the therapy is more expensive and can increase the risk of triggering a secondary al-

lergic reaction such as an asthma attack. Herbs like Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis), Nettle (Urtica dioica), and Bayberry (Myrica cerifera) can help to reduce the symptoms of nasal-pharynx congestion. In addition, Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) have been shown to inhibit phospholipase A2, the enzyme which releases the inflammatory precursor arachidonic acid from the bi-layer membrane of mast cells (the main cells which respond to respiratory allergens and lead to inflammation). Their established traditional use as antiinflammatories further supports this application.

10 Instant Health Checks Check inside lower eye lids If the inside of your lower eye lid looks unusually pale, you could be anaemic, especially if you have heavy periods or your diet is low in iron. Other places to check for paleness are your gums and your finger nail beds. Check inside your mouth for discoloration and ulcers Mouth cancer now accounts for five per cent of all tumours. All smokers and those over the age of 40 should look for persistent white patches, red velvety lesions or ulcers that last longer than a couple of weeks. Lesions on the roof of the mouth or on top of the tongue are often spotted quickly, but those on the floor of the mouth, under the tongue or in the crevices at the back of the

throat are difficult to detect in the early stages. Use a dental mirror to view the floor of your mouth, the sides and underneath of your tongue, and the gutters around your gums. Breast checks One in nine women will develop breast cancer, but early diagnosis often leads to a cure. * examine your breasts regularly * get to know their normal look and feel * look out for any lumps, dimpling, thickening or change in shape and size * attend free breast screening if you are between 50 and 70 years old * if you notice any changes contact your GP straight away

Urine colour and smell Check the colour of your wee when you visit the loo. If it’s pale in colour and relatively odourless, you’re well hydrated. If urine is dark and scant, you are likely to be dehydrated. Aim to drink at least two to three litres of fluid per day. If urine smells unpleasant, burns or stings, you could have a urine infection. In this instance, take a sample to your GP for a check. If you are always thirsty, passing lots of urine and it smells sweet, get checked for possible diabetes. Check feet and toes for fungal skin/nail infections Having checked your finger nails, don’t forget your feet. Fungal nail and skin infections often lurk here. Look for white/yellow discolouration of nails, vertical splits in nails, and rashes on the soles of your feet, and between your fourth and fifth toes. Treat with antifungal agents to prevent it spreading. Skin pinch test for hydration If you pinch the skin on the back of your hand, then let go, does it instantly snap back into place, or drop back rather sluggishly? The latter can suggest dehydration, or loss of skin elasticity due to premature skin ageing, which may have been caused, for example, by excessive sun exposure over many years. Now check the skin all over your body, By standing naked in front of a large mirror or get your partner to check places you can’t see easily, such as your back, for you. Look for moles or other blemishes that seem to be changing. While in many cases, the lesions will turn out to be harmless, skin cancer is on the increase. If diagnosed early, it is often curable. Take any niggling symptoms seriously Recurrent aches, pains, coughs, discharges, changes in bowel habit, lumps or odd sensations are often ignored in the hope they will go away. These can be signs of problems needing medical investigation and treatment, so don’t ignore them. Make an appointment to get them checked out as soon as possible.

Gadgets could run on knee power

WEARABLE electronic gadgets could in future be powered by people's knees, a study has shown. Scientists have tested an "energy harvester" electricity generator designed to be strapped to the knee. Walking motion causes plectrum-like tabs within the device to "pluck" energy generating arms, causing vibrations that produce electrical current. So far researchers have only been able to generate a tiny two milliwatts of power, but improvements are expected to yield more than 30 milliwatts. Foot-slogging soldiers may find the knee generator useful since they often have to carry up to 10 kilos of power equipment, say the scientists. The device was tested on a knee motion simulator that reproduced the gait of a walking human. Dr Michael Pozzi, from Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, whose work appears in the journal Smart Materials and Structures, said: "There is an on-going project looking at manufacturing a more compact and truly wearable harvester. "At the moment we are using precise but cost-effective manufacturing techniques for the plectra and casing and anticipate that remaining parts will be moulded industrially, slashing the cost. "I'd put a cost tag of less than ÂŁ10 for each harvester on a large-scale production."

Application submitted for .sucks domain names NEW internet address endings could include .sucks, .sex and .porn, according to a list of domain name submissions. A full list of applications for new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) names, which will be additions to the existing .com, .org, .co.uk, has been published by the organisation co-ordinating the expansion. British applicants to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) include the BBC, which has applied for .bbc, high street chain Boots, which has applied for .boots and Land Rover, which as applied for .landrover. Others include .scot by Dot Scot Registry and .wales and .cymru by Nominet. The domain name .sucks has been requested by two companies - Top Level Spectrum Inc. and Vox Populi Registry Inc. The more risque .sex also has two requests - from Internet Marketing Solutions Limited and ICM Registry, who also asked for .porn.

Uniregistry Corp. has put a bid in for .sexy. Big companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon have applied for multiple domain names. Among Google's requests are .google, .gmail, .hangout .youtube, and .and. The search giant also requested .music but has competition from Amazon and six other organisations. Icann said that it had received 1,930 requests for its first round of new domain names from 60 countries. More than 900 of the applications were from North America, with more than 650 from Europe and just 17 from Africa. It cost 185,000 US dollars (ÂŁ118,800) to submit an application but there was a support programme for needy applicants, said Icann. Anyone with an objection to any of the claims can lodge their complaint within the next seven months. Speaking at a press conference in London, Rod Beckstrom, president and chief executive officer

of Icann, said he expected some of the requests to be challenged. He said: "Some names might be provocative, some might be controversial to some but not to oth-

Historic criminal records go online

Parking Frenzy tops free apps chart A game which gets players to quickly move their car into a space has parked itself at the top of the free apps chart. Parking Frenzy, by Games2win, challenges players to get their car to the parking spot without damaging it. The game knocked 3D Mini Golf Challenge, by Digital Chocolate, off the top spot on the free iPhone chart. Bridge Constructor free held on to second spot, while Official Uefa Euro 2012 made a timely entry at third place. 3D Mini Golf Challenge slumped to ninth on the list. Bridge Constructor topped the chart for paid iPad apps, while Bridge Constructor Free was number one in the list for free iPad apps.

ers. We expect challenges." Icann said it hopes the first batch of new domains will be allocated in the first quarter of 2013.

RECORDS of more than 67,000 Victorian criminals, detailing crimes ranging from petty theft and drunkenness to arson and murder, have been published online for the first time. Family history website Ancestry.co.uk said its collection also tells the stories of local peacemakers of the time, including jury candidates

and members of the local militia. The Dorset, England Prison Admission and Discharge Registers 1782-1901 and Dorset, England, Calendar of Prisoners 1854-1904 also includes mug shots of 19th century convicts. The records include the criminal's name, place and date of conviction, sentence, phys-

ical description and details of previous crimes. Criminals listed include Samuel Baker, aged 73, who was sentenced to nine months hard labour after breaking into a house to steal two brushes, some vests, and a pair of stockings in 1893; Charles Wood, an unemployed local drunk who was sentenced to one month in prison for "refusing to quit the beer-house" in 1872, and 18-year-old George Pill, who stole a donkey from a neighbour in 1894, resulting in a punishment of six weeks hard labour. The records also give details of labourer James Seal, who was sentenced to be hanged after being found guilty of murder in 1858. Ancestry.co.uk content manager Miriam Silverman said: "The fact that these records feature photographs as well as physical descriptions means anyone with an ancestor in the collection will find out a great deal about them, whilst others can uncover compelling information about forgotten members of society who were down on their luck. "Records such as these that pre-date civil registration also allow researchers to delve deeper into our past than other historical records allow, unlocking the opportunity to find out more about some of Britain's lesserknown characters - including these roguish criminals."

One-tonne doner kebab smashes world record

Girl's school dinner blog banned

THIS one-tonne doner kebab has been crowned the world’s largest

A

one tonne doner kebab made from the meat of seven cows has been recognised as the biggest in the world. Prepared in Turkey, the doner stood two and a half metres tall and needed a crane to heave it into position. It weighed a total of 1,198 kilograms and needed ten cooks working on scaffolding to prepare it, reports The Mirror. Guinness officials in the Turkish capital of Ankara confirmed that it was a new record-breaker. The hefty kebab smashed a previous record set in Australia in 2004, weighing almost double the size. It was later cut up into pieces for spectators at the Ankara Shopping Fest in Genclik Park.

Meet the next generation of adorable canine crime fighters

A SCHOOLGIRl has been banned from posting pictures of her school dinners on her hugely successful blog. Nine-year-old Martha Payne's blog has attracted more than two million hits and sparked debate about the quality of school meals. She even drew comparisons with Jamie Oliver for his fight for healthy meals, with the celebrity chef praising the "clever girl" for her "great work". But her local council has now banned her from posting pictures on her blog, started seven weeks ago, because of a "headline in a newspaper". Despite the blog's huge success and "brilliant" support from her unnamed school, Argyll and Bute Council bureaucrats made the decision after the negative publicity. The decision has left the schoolgirl, from Lochgilphead, Argyll, devastated and her father, Dave Payne, angry at the "unfortunate" decision. It has also drawn dozens of hundreds of outraged responses from people who have followed her exploits from the school canteen in the school in Western Scotland. In a post published on the blog, Martha, who goes by the name Veg, wrote: "This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. "I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today. "I only write my blog not newspapers and I am sad I am no longer allowed to take photos."

They may look cute now, but these adorable German Shepherd puppies will grow up to be canine crime-fighters.

Fashion fermented from red wine

THE seven-week-old pups are on the lookout for volunteers who can help them learn before they join West Midlands Police when they get older. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to be a puppy walker if they have the time to look after the dog and give it plenty of play time. When the pups are six months old, they will return to the force’s dog unit at Balsall Common, Birmingham, where they will be signed up for duty. Breed Scheme Manager, Pc Terry Arnett, said: 'The dogs we train are key members of our team so we want to ensure we do the best by them from the very start and we urgently need to find suitable homes for these puppies as a vital part of that process. 'We are here to train the dogs and support successful volunteers throughout the programme. 'All we ask is that the puppies are played with in a constructive way and that someone is generally at home for most of the day.'

SCIENTISTS in Australia have unveiled a collection of clothing fashioned from red wine. A team from the University of Western Australia added bacteria to wine to create a cotton-like substance. The fabric grows itself and forms around an inflatable mannequin without the need for a single stitch. So far, they have made dresses, T-shirts and swimwear and are now looking at ways to improve the strength of the fabric. Lead researcher Gary Cass collaborated with contemporary artist Donna Franklin to design the womenswear range. This layer is then harvested and dried on an inflatable mannequin to get the desired shape. When the dummy is deflated the clothing remains, however as it dries the cloth becomes like tissue paper, tearing easily.

Raised Bed Gardening

What Can You Raise in a Raised Bed?

tilling necessary! And even if your local soil is the worst clay or rock, your raised garden bed will won’t need to be amended and worked every year. More Vegetables and/or Flowers You can squeeze more into a raised bed because you don’t need to leave room for paths. You never walk in the beds, you just lean into them. Keep this in mind when you’re building a raised bed and don’t make it any wide than you can reach.

R

aised bed gardening refers to gardening in soil that has been mounded or contained higher than the surrounding soil. Raised bed gardening is an old gardening practice, but it’s currently growing in popularity again because it offers several advantages to simply growing your plants in level ground.

Good Drainage Ever hear the expression ‘well drained soil’? Of course you have. Because raised beds are elevated, the soil drains more

Every inch the bed is raised is one less inch you’ll need to bend. In fact, physically challenged gardeners and wheelchair gardeners can keep on gardening when beds are raised to a reachable height. I can see raised beds getting higher as we get older.

rapidly than garden soil. You can work in the spring, when your yard is still mud and rainy days won’t be lost days in the garden. Of course this also means they can dry out faster, but raised beds are also easier to water than open gardens. The smaller area is perfect for installing drip irrigation. Even if you use a garden hose, you’ll be wasting less water and taking less time than watering traditional garden beds.

Building a Raised Bed Raised beds are easy enough to construct. The simplest raised beds are just four boards joined together in a square. Cedar, redwood, the new pressure treated woods and even newer synthetic boards all weather well for several years. You can even get resourceful and build your bed out of bales of hay, cinder blocks or whatever’s handy. Or you can buy a kit that comes with everything you need to nail or pop your bed together.

Critter Control It’s much, much easier to keep burrowing animals out of a raised bed. Just line the bottom of the raised bed with hardware cloth or chicken fencing. Repellents can usually be sprayed just around the perimeter. You can even cover the whole bed with bird netting. Easy on the Back

You Control the Soil Obviously this will be good for your plants, since you can bring in the best garden soil. Never walking on the soil means it will forever be light and aerated, not compacted. It’s also good for the gardener because there is no

Small Garden design ideas

D

esigning gardens for small spaces raises a number of challenges and demands greater use of the available space than might be the case with larger sites. Typically this might involve careful consideration of several elements including low maintenance planting but looking good most if not all year long, screening unwanted views, a structure which is

not only visually interesting but practical. Other challenges might be where to locate planting and other features such as lighting, water etc. Small spaces demand no fuss but big impact. In this case we have constructed Raised planter beds using yellow quartz stone. The planting beds are generous to accomodate the tall mature Bamboos, ideal for screening

and providing an easily maintained lush finish with great rustling sounds (an added bonus especially in smaller gardens). The granite sphere is a compact but equally delightful water feature, lots of sound but hardly any maintenance. The Raised Planter beds are easily maintained with easy access and the finish is eyecatching and the sandstone wall capping provides much

useful additional informal seating. In smaller gardens, it is important to bring out the best and the light coloured sandstone stone chippings not only provides a beautiful and rustic ground covering but a bright and very affordable finish to complement the more expensive drystone finish to the Raised Planter beds.
