HE location of cycle lanes close to major towns has, in general, become a welcome feature of the urban landscape in recent years. However, the presence of what are termed Advisory Cycle Lanes are beginning to cause some confusion and motorists close to Sligo town, particularly those who use the Strandhill Road, have expressed serious safety concerns about the presence of such Lanes. The serious problem arises when the space for the cyclist becomes an Advisory Lane as there is insufficient road space to provide a Mandatory Lane. It is becoming apparent that on stretches of this road there is insufficient space for motorists and cyclists. One motorists, venting his frustration on boards.ie, said he had to swerve suddenly to avoid a cyclist just before the turn for the Second Sea Road, as there simply wasn’t enough room, particularly when the cyclist in question seemed to have her passenger tyre on the broken line. Close to the junction at Larkhill Road and Second Sea Road it is almost impossible to drive without going into the cycle lane, and for motorists it seems ridiculous to have it there in the first place. Others have questioned the cost in relation to the benefit of this “paint and tar” job. Continued on Page 2

Cycle lanes cause confusion

At the junction where larkhill road meets Strandhill road it is not possible to stay out of the cycle lane Continued from front page: When contacted by North West Express Sligo County Council issued the following statement in relation to Strandhill Cycleway: “There are two types of cycle lanes provided on the Strandhill Road – Mandatory and Advisory. Mandatory

Hopes and Dreams open evening Friday HOPES and Dreams are holding their Open Evening this Friday, May 25 from 5.30-7.30pm in Cartron Heights, Sligo. Hopes and Dreams have been providing first class childcare in Sligo for the past thir-teen years. This is a great opportunity for any past pupils to pop in and say hello. Cycle Lanes are marked by a continuous white line which prohibits motorised traffic from entering the lane, except for access. There is sufficient road width outside the cycle lane to cater for motorised traffic. “Advisory Cycle Lanes are marked by a broken white line which allows

motorised traffic to enter or cross the lane. Advisory Cycle Lanes are used where a Mandatory Cycle Lane leaves insufficient residual road space for traffic. The provision of an Advisory Cycle Lane draws attention to the presence of cyclists. Advisory Cycle Lanes are located on the Strandhill Road towards Sligo Town where there was insufficient residual road space for the provision of Mandatory Cycle Lanes. “The majority of the Strandhill cycleway is mandatory, with a buffer zone separating the cyclists from motorised traffic, indicated by a broken yellow line.” The official position is clear. However, the reality for motorists is different. The presence of cyclists and motorists trying to navigate their positions when there is clearly insufficient room for both is becoming nothing short of a nightmare and a major safety risk for cyclists who use these treacherous lanes.

Aughawillan girl is Leitrim’s Rose IT was glitz and glamour in the Landmark Hotel, Carrickon-Shannon, on Saturday, night, May 5th, when, before a packed audience, Aughawillan’s Niamh Flanagan was selected as Leitrim’s Rose 2012. Nine ladies from around the county took part in the Leitrim Rose Selection and made their families, their communities and themselves extremely proud with their outstanding performances. The girls had all taken part

in individual interviews and group discussions earlier in the day, before they transformed into glamorous ladies gracing the stage before around 300 people. The crowd was amazing, large, and loud, with enough flags and banners to get you on to Winning Streak. It was great to see so much support for these wonderful girls, some who had flown in especially or dashed from finishing important college exams, all wanting the chance to represent Leitrim in the Rose of Tralee 2012. Twenty year old Niamh Flanagan was surprised and speechless after her name was called out on stage. It was not an easy decision for the judges to pick just one from such an excellent line out of Leitrim’s finest. Niamh thanked everyone for their support and expressed gratitude for being selected, as Brenda Stenson handed over the Leitrim Rose sash.

Niamh is doing a Childcare Management Course in Athlone IT and works part time for Mullross Nursing Home – who were her sponsors for the event. Daughter of Michael (well known referee) and Collette Flanagan she comes from a well known GAA family and she also plays for Aughawillan Ladies and has refereed some underage GAA games. The caring young lady, who wants to set up her own childcare business in the county, told the crowd her nickname at home is ‘No Pressure Flanagan’ as that is what her father says to her. Niamh was joined on stage by her family and friends before she went on to celebrate her success in Club 360 with the other roses, including the 2012 Fermanagh and Galway winning roses. Niamh will now begin preparations for the Rose of Tralee Regional Finals in Portlaoise on the June Bank Holiday weekend. From 28 Irish roses, only 7 go through to the final in Tralee. The Leitrim Rose Selection night raised €800 for Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children charity.

Community Organisations assist in Digital TV Switchover

C

ommunity organisations in the West are gearing up to assist older and more isolated people to make the switch to digital television. As the analogue signal for receiving TV will be switched off on 24th October, viewers who use an aerial will need to take action so they will continue to receive a TV signal after that date. While most people are expected to get around to it, a new Community Outreach programme, initiated by the Department of Communications, is

targeting people who, for whatever reason, are less likely to make the change in time. These people may be older, live in more isolated areas and possibly live alone. Caroline Wilson is the Digital Outreach Champion for the Mayo county, working with Knockmore/Rathduff Resource Centre. She will involve a wide range of organisations to help create greater awareness and understanding of the Digital Switchover in this area and right around the

county. Volunteers from these organisations will identify people who might have difficulty making the switch and will assist them to do so. Caroline Wilson said that she believed that a huge community effort is needed. “We need to make sure that people are not afraid of this change. We will all benefit: for example we’ll get a clear and more consistent picture on our televisions. It’s actually very easy to make the switch. For people that get their TV service through a PayTV provider over satellite or cable, they don’t need to worry about their own TV service. But if you get your TV through an aerial, you need to either get SAORVIEW or Pay-TV. A SAORVIEW-approved settop box, or a SAORVIEW-approved new television, will mean you can continue to get the Irish channels for free. Or you could get Pay-TV with a monthly bill from a provider such as Sky or UPC.” She continued “But even if you’ve sorted out your own TV service, your neighbours or friends may need assistance. We need people to get involved in helping people in their own community: volunteers who already know the people in the area that may need some help and are in a position to reach them. We’re all going to work hard right up to 24th October, relying on the deeply in-

grained Irish tradition of caring for our neighbours. We need to make sure that nobody gets left behind.” The Community Outreach Switchover Programme is being run in every county and is a partnership between The Wheel, an umbrella body for the community and voluntary sector, and the leading voice for rural Ireland, Irish Rural Link, with funding from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. Caroline Wilson and Knockmore/Rathduff Resource Centre were chosen following a competitive selection process and undertook training in early March. Caroline Wilson continued: “Knockmore/Rathduff Resource Centre is delighted to be involved in the programme. Television is an important part of people’s lives, particularly those who are living alone or in isolated locations. I’d love to hear from people and organisations who would like to get involved in this exciting effort. We know there are lots of people out there who care. This programme is based on providing simple and clear information to the target group, giving them practical help without having to get technical”. If you’re interested in getting involved or would like further information, contact: Caroline Wilson at 086 2899296 or wcaroline79@gmail.com

Tour operators give Westport tourism a timely boost

WESTPORT’S hugely popular traditional music summer show ‘The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol’ at Hotel Westport received a timely boost last week with the news that a number of interna-

tional tour operators are scheduling the show into their summer itineraries this summer. Promoters from The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol show were in Dublin recently at the Meitheal Irish Travel and Trade Fair Show at the RDS and met several key tour operators from around the world to discuss the possibility of tour groups travelling to Westport in the coming months. “The reaction from the tour operators was very positive and they are very keen to support the Gráinne Mhaol show at Hotel Westport this year and next year. This is also great news for Westport as these tour operators will stay in the different hotels in the town and they will greatly benefit the local economy,” commented Gráinne Mhaol show producer Pierce O’Reilly. This summer the Gráinne Mhaol show at Hotel Westport is set to be extended to two nights a week with the cast and crew now set to perform the show every Monday and Wednesday from June to September. The Gráinne Mhaol delegation met with tour operators and travel agents from all over the UK and Europe with Senior Vice President of CIE Tours International Dennis Savage also indicating

he would like to support the show. “Our meeting with Dennis Savage was very productive. CIE brings over 30,000 US visitors to Ireland every summer and they are constantly looking for new routes and activities and the Gráinne Mhaol show in Westport was key to our discussions. Dennis is very interested in scheduling the show for CIE and that would be a massive boost for everyone in Westport,” commented O’Reilly Based on the real-life story of the Pirate Queen Grace O’ Malley or Gráinne Mhaol ‘The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol’ summer music show has attracted over 15,000 visitors to Westport over the past three summers. The show is full of energy and enthusiasm and is an incredible, unique, entertainment show that combines Irish dances and Sean Nós dancing with the passionate Latino rhythms of Tango and Salsa in a performance of strength and passion. Tickets for the show cost €25 and are available from www.grainnemhaol.com and Hotel Westport at (098) 25122. The show runs every Monday and Wednesday night from June 13th at Hotel Westport.

Kids waiting up to five years for orthodontics UP to 20,000 children are on public waiting lists for orthodontic treatment, with many of them waiting up to five years for procedures, according to the Irish Dental Association (IDA). New IDA President Dr Andrew Bolas said it was totally unacceptable in the 21st century that children were being denied treatment in this manner and that waiting lists and waiting times were continuing to spiral. Speaking at the IDA's annual conference in Killarney, he said the public health system only treated patients with severe dental problems, so the children on orthodontic lists had serious issues. "In many cases their childhood is being blighted by these problems and the long delays for treatment." However, Dr Bolas indicated that the problem may be even greater. "Tens of thousands of other children will not qualify for treatment and will either have to go without or pay for private treatment." He said there was a totally inconsistent approach to school dental screenings. "In theory, all children under 16 are entitled to receive dental health screening and preventive treatments. In all, they should be examined three times in primary school, but some children are only receiving their initial screening in sixth class." Dr Bolas claimed the dental care system in Ireland, which was already reeling from cuts to medical card and PRSI entitlements, was now in danger of collapse due to chronic understaffing.

Students seek support in Sligo Way Challenge I

Pictured at the launch of the Sligo Way Challenge are lecturers on the Bachelor of Business (Recreation and Leisure) course Kerry Larkin and Roddy Gaynor, with students Sean Watters and Ross Donovan. From left to right: Kerry Larkin, Sean Watters, Ross Donovan and Roddy Gaynor.

T Sligo student Sean Watters from Manorhamilton is teaming up with Dromahair’s Brian McMorrow and Sligo GAA Captain Ross Donovan to organise a great charity challenge next month in aid of a Moldovian orphanage. Sean and the team will be using Hiking and Orienteering, two of the outdoor activities studied by students of IT Sligo’s Bachelor of Business (Recreation and Leisure) to plan an ambitious two-day hike across the Sligo Way in aid of Outreach Moldova on June 30 and July 1. The walk will start at Larrigan near Lough Talt in the Ox Mountains close to the Mayo border and continue to Dromahair, taking in views of Ben Bulben, Slieve League, the Isle of Inishfree and Lough Gill and reaching almost 900 metres at points. The benefiting charity, ‘Outreach Moldova’, was founded by an Irish woman Dr Suzanne O’Connell, and provides medical care and social inclusion for children that have been abandoned or orphaned and children with special needs and children with terminal illnesses. Sean is encouraging Leitrim people to get involved in the challenge. The other students are seeking help from their own

counties and towns. Having travelled to the orphanage last Summer, Sean is keen to raise as much money as possible for it again this year. “The children at the orphanage rely on volunteers that travel out there every Summer,” he said. “The money raised by volunteers goes towards the running of the facility and during the two weeks we spend there, we help to keep the children active and engaged.” Sean says he’ll be using a lot of the skills he has learned in his course at IT Sligo with the children at the orphanage when he returns there this August, “This year, we had a number of sessions with Shane Hayes from the Sligo Sports Partnership, who coached us in skill development, from the most basic level. Getting the children active helps them, mentally and physically.” Participants in the challenge will camp overnight at a selected route along the way. Anyone who is interested in getting involved in The Sligo Way Challenge or who would like to join the group for even part of the hike can contact Sean at (087) 7550285 or by emailing tigersean007@hotmail.com

Exceptional Night at Source Cookery School for North West Simon Community

Staff of NW Simon Community with Eileen Magnier

AN exceptional night was had by all at Source Cookery School Sligo on Thurs 3rd May. It was a fundraising Cookery Demo & Wine Dine in aid of the North West Simon Community organised by Mary Mc Keon, Development Officer with the charity. Mary would like to thank Eithne Anderson and Eithne O Sullivan and her staff of Source Cookery School for giving

of their time so generously for this fundraiser. A total of €2,014.20 was raised on the night and thank you to all who supported – I think everyone would agree that the food cooked by Eithne O Sullivan was superb and the desserts divine. The wine was generously sponsored by Joe Grogan of Hargadon’s Wine Bar and all the food was kindly sponsored. A

big thank you to Union Foods, Pallas Foods, Total Produce, Connacht Gold, Abbey Foods, Clarke’s Butchers, John Flynn Fish Sales, Charlie Kelly, Lissadell, Woodville Farm, all from Sligo and Jinnys Bakery, Drumshanbo for sponsoring the food that Eithne cooked. Thanks also to Sweet Temptations Cakes of Keshcarrigan for sponsoring the fantastic cake with the North West Simon logo which was raffled. Thanks to all the local businesses who sponsored spot prizes - Source Cookery School, Vacufit, The Cat & Moon, Taheny Electrical, Cross Sections, Michael Hennessy Ceramics, Enda Horan Pharmacy, Reidy’s Wine Bar & Bistro and Abbey Food Centre. Thanks to Eileen Magnier, a board member of North West Simon, for addressing the guests. Source Sligo Cookery School has state of the art equipment and facilities, in a bright room overlooking O’Connell St and is ideal for private, corporate or kids parties. Check out all the cookery classes on www.sourcesligo.ie/cookerycourses. The Tenancy Sustainment worker with North West Simon for the Sligo area is Michelle Lally. To date homelessness has been prevented for 12 individuals and their families throughout County Sligo. Marie Finney is the outreach worker providing lifeskills programmes to 40 single isolated men in Dromore West, Easkey, Tubbercurry and Ballymote. The programme also includes home visits thus ensuring that the men continue to be supported to sustain a home of their own. Michelle or Marie can be contacted at 071 9855005. If you would like to volunteer with the North West Simon or organise a fundraising event please contact Mary Mc Keon on 087 7708865

River Moy Half Marathon 2012 'Canty proves he can; Holmes wins at home'

T

he sun shone brightly on Ballina for the River Moy Half Marathon held in the North Mayo capital on Saturday. On a perfect day for running, many personal bests were set on a flat and scenic course which is never too far away from the salmon rich river which lends its name to the race. This is a race which has justifiably gained a reputation for catering for the athletic targets of

all participants and this year was no different with the presence of race pacers for 1:30; 1:40; 1:50; 2:00 and 2:10. This was much appreciated by many runners as pacing in a half marathon is crucial. Local athlete Michael Canty emerged victorious on the day in a time of 1:14:59, making his drive for home as he strode into the canopy of Belleek Woods with Irish international ultra-runner John

Byrne, representing Mayo AC. This win is Michael's biggest win to date and truly represents the fantastic athletic journey he has undertaken in the past three years having joined Ballina AC through the Fit4life programme. The highly efficient Ballina AC athlete bade his time behind the early leaders of Byrne and eventual third placed Ian Egan. However, he was determined that his drive for home was

going to be a decisive one and he tore through the Belleek Woods section of the race like a man possessed. Only a few weeks ago, John Byrne represented Ireland in European and World 100km race in Italy and finished in 33rd place. Thomas Kelly from North Sligo AC was fourth and Ballina native John Courell was fifth - his father Michael also finished the race! Maurice Looby was sixth and Gerry Duffy, the motivational Mullingar athlete of '32 marathons in 32 days' fame was seventh. Gerry is a regular visitor to Ballina and was a great presence in this race. The female race was won by Dublin based doctor Dervila Holmes representing Donore City Harriers who made the trip west to her native Mayo to secure victory in 1:29:30. Running steadily throughout, Dervila equalled her personal best for the half marathon and is enjoying a very successful season so far. In second place in the female section was Sarah Syron, Mayo AC followed by local runner Rachel Nolan in third place. There was great support for all athletes along the route and the finish on Cregg's Road had the feel of any big race. The loudest cheer of the day was reserved for local athlete Tom Horkan who crossed the line in 1:59:06 - Tom is over 70 years of age and a great ambassador for lifelong running! It is this attention to detail and appreciation of the efforts of all the runners that sets this race apart!

Sligo General Hospital tops the bed closures league ACCORDING to a report initiated by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Sligo General Hospital has the highest number of bed closures in the country. As part of its investigation into Tallaght hospital, HIQA looked at waiting times in emergency departments in 33 other acute adult hospitals around the State on August 24th last year. The majority of hospitals failed to meet emergency department waiting time targets . National and international best practice recommends that 95 per cent of patients who arrive at an emergency department and who need to be admitted should be in a hospital bed within six hours and all should be admitted within nine hours. The authority also examined hospital bed closures and found 611 beds were closed on August 24th last year. Twenty-five hospitals reported bed closures, with the largest number of 66, at Sligo Regional Hospital, which has 318 beds. The Health Authority says a reduction in the inpatient bed capacity as a result of bed closures may, if not effectively managed, potentially have a serious adverse impact on the timeliness of scheduled and unscheduled patient care.

Ming asked to withdraw Nazi remarks IN our last issue we recorded the intervention of Justice Minister Alan Shatter in support of the Sligo group, Dervish, who were suffering as a result of a campaign of cyberbullying. Last week the Minister asked Deputy Luke Ming Flanagan to withdraw remarks comparing the turf-cutting scenario with Nazi Germany. The exchange took place during defence questions in the Dail yesterday. Minister Alan Shatter criticised comments by the Roscommon-South Leitrim TD where he suggested legal difficulties in relation to the bogs replicated what went on in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Minister Shatter called on Mr Flanagan to withdraw his remark and referred to him as "an ignorant buffoon."

Plaudits for Roscommon Gardai after recovery of machinery STOLEN farm machinery worth in the region of €150,000, the property of two South Roscommon farmers, has been recovered after extensive investigatory work by Roscommon Gardai. Indeed the two Curraghboy farmers, Cormac and Tom Og O’Brien, who had their new Massey Ferguson tractor and loader stolen from their farm on April 30th, have praised the detective branch of Roscommon Gardai for what they called “their exemplary efforts” in the case. Another tractor was stolen from the Cam area some days later. However, following extensive investigations by Roscommon Gardai the machinery was recovered on property in the Knockcroghery area on Wednesday last. "We got the tractor back today (Monday) and while there are a few bits and pieces missing, we are thrilled to have it back. There was an extra 13 hours work done on it since it went missing. I would like to say a massive thank you to the Gardai locally who put in a tremendous amount of effort to recover the tractors. Especially the detective branch who up kept

us informed at all times as the search continued," said Cormac. Three men were arrested by Gardai in the Tulsk area on Thursday evening last in relation to the possession of stolen property and appeared before a special sitting of Roscommon District Court on Friday night week. Barry O'Gara with an address in Tibohine; Noel Muldoon and Patrick Duffy both with addresses in Ballymote, County Sligo were each charged with possession of a stolen John Deere tractor worth €45,000 and the possession of a stolen Massey Ferguson tractor

worth €66,000 between April 29th and May 1st. The three were remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison with consent to bail. They were due to appear at Harristown District Court on Friday morning. The arrests were part of an ongoing special Garda operation, ‘Aimsir’, which is underway in the West of Ireland. Mr. O'Brien has appealed to other farmers to be as vigilant as possible, as the theft of farm machinery continues to increase. He advised farmers to consider using tracking devices as these thefts are now widespread across the country.

he sun and moon aligned over the Earth in a rare astronomical event called the ‘Ring of Fire’ solar eclipse on Sunday - an annular eclipse that dimmed the skies over parts of Asia and North America, briefly turning the sun into a blazing ring of fire. Meanwhile in Sligo a crowd of people gathered together to form a ring of their own on top of Knocknarea. The event was organized by Sligo VEC and money raised went to a number of different charities including The Deferno Trust, S.T.O.P, Sligo Alzheimers, Amy’s memorial garden at Ballinode College, and Schools Kilimanjaro Fund. Over 200 people climbed to the top of Knocknarea and formed a chain beside Maeve’s Cairn. As participants reached the cairn they were welcomed by music from a local piper. People of all ages climbed, with the youngest climbers being just three years old! Back in the carpark at Knocknarea climbers were welcomed with markets, music and refreshments. A fun day was had by all, the sun shone down and it was all for a good cause!

Scouts learn about the diversity of engineering at IT Sligo

A

group of 25 local scouts got an insight into the work of civil engineers during a recent visit to IT Sligo. The members of Yeats Scout County who were led by County Commissioner Gillian Watters got lots of practical experience when they built two bridges on the campus. They also got some useful information about how to monitor water quality, and assess the strength and resistance of different materials used in Civil Engineering. “They built bridges over the river on the campus, using ropes and timber,” explained Ms Watters. “It was a very relevant exercise for the scouts who regularly go camping”. IT Sligo lecturer Dr Tomas O’Flaherty who hosted the visit along

with a number of colleagues from the Civil Engineering programme, said staff were very impressed with the prowess of the scouts who were aged from 12 to 17. m“They did all the work on the bridge themselves – we just supervised,” he stressed. “We wanted to show the scouts how relevant Civil Engineering is to their own lives and to get the message across that it is about much more than just building houses”. Dr O’Flaherty said that as a result of the visit he hoped to build a relationship between the Institute and the scouts, and staff were keen to become involved in future events such as jamborees. “It was exciting for the scouts when they saw the bridge taking shape,” said the lecturer. “It

his is a question which has frequently sparked heated arguments. Some argue it has merely changed society for the better, others that technology is having a detrimental effect on the way we live. Take a stroll around any busy street and you can make the decision for yourself. It is undeniable that technology has an absolutely enormous influence on our society today, not only within the younger generation (as some may argue) but throughout the populace. Whether it’s the inane chatter of a teenager on a Blackberry in a shop queue, or a businessman checking his emails as he grabs a cup of coffee, technology is

showed them the different practical aspects of Civil Engineering and the diverse role that Civil Engineers play in society, through, for example, sustainable development and protection of the environment”.He said that because the scouts are so involved in outdoor activities, they have a natural affinity for many aspects of Civil Engineering and he hoped they would now realize that it was an attractive career option. “We brought them to the laboratories and showed them how to test the strength of the ropes and timber that they used for building the bridges and how to gauge the resistance of other materials. We also brought them to the water laboratory and demonstrated how the quality of water is tested.” Ms Watters said that as a result of the visit the scouts appreciated how Civil Engineering applies to everyday life. “As scouts they know that when they are out on a mountain they won’t find a tap and how it important it is to find a safe water source,” she said. Staff explained to the young people that Civil Engineering is a diverse sector which can involve the design and construction of water systems, infrastructure, bridges, roads and skyscrapers.

Is Technology becoming our society?

slowly extending its grip on the population. Take even the simple task of the weekly grocery shopping, which thanks to the internet is in the process of undergoing a complete overhaul. Many people opt to order it online and have it delivered to the door. Why wouldn’t they? Just a few simple steps, which can be done in the comfort of your own home and your shopping is delivered to your door- completely hassle-free. With the labour and difficulty erased from shopping, this seems to be the perfect solution to a mundane task, and it’s all thanks to technology. However, the implications of this transaction on our wider society should be

considered. The simple trip to the shopping centre is vitally important for many aspects of our society. Firstly it gives those who feel isolated, the chance to engage in social interaction, which they otherwise may not experience. Secondly, many smaller grocery stores provide a sense of community, and help newcomers to the area meet their neighbours. Experts predict that internet shopping will, in the future, completely over take the traditional form. This is just one small example of the small changes which show how technology is taking over our society. Another aspect of technology which has been greatly developed is, of course the humble mobile phone. There are few places you can go these days without witnessing someone busily texting or chatting on their phone- at football matches, hair salons, even schoolyards! It’s pretty remarkable to consider that the first mobile was invented less than forty years ago and all ready it has become essential part of many people’s lives. Few people would venture further than the front gate without their reliable friend in hand. One can only imagine the influence and advances it will have made in another forty years. The price range varies greatly from €60 right up to €1000 and beyond which allows the vast majority of people to own a mobile. In fact, a recent survey suggests that up to 90% of children in Britain own a mobile. This is an alarming statistic. Surely, this indicates how wide-

spread the effects of technologic advances have become when even young children find it more important to keep in contact with friends via than actually playing together. Of course, mobile phones have many advantages, but nevertheless it cannot be denied that they have become part of the fabric of our society. Another worrying feature of developing technology is the fact that many people do not feel the need to leave their homes to be entertained. Rather than actively participate in a game of football with friends, many choose to play a fantasy game on their playstation. No matter how good the graphics are, surely this cannot compare to the exhilaration felt after an enjoyable physical game? Certainly, the social impact is huge as team activities are vital to create a feeling of importance and personal fulfilment, even if it is only a friendly kick around. It is clear that technological advances are having and will continue to have, a huge influence on the very core of our society. Whether it is taking over our society comes down to a matter of personal opinion. Without a doubt, already society has adjusted to these advances, how this development will continue is unpredictable. We shall have to wait and see.

re you a singer-songwriter? Are you fed up with TV talent shows? Do you think you’ve got what it takes to succeed? Would you like to win a day in Ireland’s best recording studio and billing at the Indie-pendence music festival in Mitchelstown over the August bank holiday? Newstalk’s Tom Dunne is looking for Ireland’s best unsigned singer-songwriter.This genuine talent search is open to people of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the country. The only condition is that entrants aren’t signed to a record label. The prize: The chance to perform live on the Tom Dunne radio show to a specially invited audience. Billing at Indie-pendence Music and Arts Festival, Mitchelstown, august 3rd – 5th 2012. The festival line up includes: Feeder, Delorentos, Jape,The Frank & Walters, Royseven, The Kanyu Tree and Mav-

erick Sabre. A day's studio time at Ireland's most renowned recording studio Windmill Lane, with a producer and all mixing facilities. On the talent search, Tom Says: “Songwriters and singer-songwriters are the life blood of the music industry and you can’t help but suspect the emphasis that talent shows like The Voice or Britain’s/ Ireland’s Got Talent are consuming all the record company resources that might otherwise go to developing new writing talent. There have always been talent shows, but never before have they consumed so much of the available resources. This is happening at a time when Record Companies are reeling from falling CD sales and have still to come to terms with illegal downloads. As a result, labels are no longer putting anything like the effort they used to into developing, nurturing and simply encouraging raw, young talent. REM were a good seven albums into their career before they became successful. U2 had four under their belt. Would a new talent get such a run again? Some record companies no longer even have A & R departments.” Tom says: “Song writing is a craft. It takes time and application. Few people start off particularly brilliant, but with help great talents can develop. So, our idea with the show is to simply offer a little help and encouragement to new talent. It won’t result in a sudden thrust into a spotlight that the talent isn’t ready for. Instead we offer honest feedback, encouragement and access to studios, and other song writers. “We may not necessarily find the new Damien Rice but we might find someone who in a few years could be just as talented and successful. Someone who could

contribute the kind of original ‘voice’ that makes radio worth listening to.” “TV shows are distorting the market, and taking too many resources. Record companies are developing too little new talent. In the current climate the new Neil Young is more likely to write an App than Heart of Gold. When we start looking for Ireland’s best unsigned singer-songwriter, ultimately the listener will be the winner.” Tom recently interviewed Paul McGuinness and the U2 manager suggested Tom use his show as a platform for finding new talent. Discussing the challenges facing Irish singer-songwriters, McGuinness said: “It’s always hard for them, but all I know is down the road from here, and we don’t know his or her name, but there is somebody writing a song tonight who is going to be huge. You just don’t know who they are yet. Maybe you’ll find them on your show!” Shane Dunne from Indie-pendence 2012 says: "We're delighted to work with Tom Dunne and Newstalk on this talent search and to offer a new Irish singer songwriter a slot on this year's festival bill. Indie-pendence has always tried to showcase some of the best Irish music that's out there and we're looking forward to providing a stage and a large audience to a new talent." The judging panel will consist of Tom Dunne, Indie-pendence festival organiser Shane Dunne, renowned A & R consultant Thomas Black and songwriter Steve Wall from The Stunning and The Walls. The deadline for entries is midday on June 8th 2012. The winner will be announced at 10am on June 15th 2012. Entrants must not be currently signed to a label. Entries can be sent via email to demos@newstalk.ie

ARDAL O'HANLON COMES TO THE ROYAL ARDAL O'Hanlon is of course best known for playing wide-eyed Father Dougal McGuire on Channel 4's Father Ted where embodied the role of Dougal so perfectly with his endearingly daft lines and dim facial expressions that few ators can rival. However despite Dougal being by far his biggest role to date, if you really want to enjoy the talents of O’Hanlon, you have to see him live on stage. O'Hanlon has worked constantly since Fr. Ted went off the air in 1998. As well as making numerous TV appearances, he has gigged solidly around the world, mainly in the UK and Ireland, and has performed televised gigs for Live In The Apollo and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow. With guest leads in programmes as diverse as Skins (C4) and Doctor Who (BBC), Ardal also stars in the feature film, Wide Open Spaces. His debut novel The

Talk of the Town remained in the Best Seller charts for more than 6 months and was recently voted one of the 1001 books to read before you die. However during his stand up performance, he may look like Dougal, and sound like Dougal but his delivery is fast and often confessional, with the comedian telling you his sinful thoughts and deeds in a seemingly off-the-cuff manner. So if your going to see this Monaghan funnyman perform at the Royal Theatre, then put Dougal to the back of your mind and enjoy this very different, but also very funny man, who looks a lot like him! Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.ie as well

as from the Royal Theatre Box Office on 0818 300 000. Tickets are €22.65, incl. booking fee other service charges may apply. For further information please check the Royal Theatre website on: www.royaltheatre.ie or www.ticketmaster.ie

Freezing is one of the easiest, most convenient, and least timeconsuming methods of preserving foods. Freezing does not sterilize foods; the extreme cold simply retards the growth of microorganisms and slows down chemical changes that affect quality or cause food to spoil. Eskimos also use refrigerators to keep food from freezing. But why would they if they live in below-zero temperatures? Well, will you just leave meat or food on the table or somewhere if you have a refrigerator in the house? When out on the ice-covered plains, where you won’t find refrigerators, Eskimos put food in bags made of seal skins to shield it from exposure. Tomato is world’s most popular fruit The tomato is the world’s most popular fruit. And yes, just like the brinjal and the pumpkin, botanically speaking it is a fruit, not a vegetable. More than 60 million tons of tomatoes are produced per year, 16 million tons more than the second most popular fruit, the banana.

Exercises to Boost Metabolism activities -- will break up a stale workout and boost your metabolism. “You’re building muscle and increasing your heart rate so it will stay elevated for a longer time after your workout, and you’ll burn calories longer,” says Whitmarsh. Keep It Up The last secret to boosting your metabolism is to choose multifunctional exercises that maximize your muscle gain by working many body parts at once. Whitmarsh’s top five exercises to boost your metabolism can all be done easily at home: 1. Mountain-climbers: Start on the floor in a hands-and-knees position. Lift one bent knee close to your chest. Alternate your knees into your chest by tapping your toes to the floor and back. Repeat 20 to 50 times without stopping.

C

an’t seem to lose those last few pounds, even with diet and exercise? Your metabolism could be to blame. Not all of us are blessed with a high metabolic rate, but by making some simple changes to your exercise routine, you can boost your metabolism and help your body burn more calories, even when you’re resting. “You absolutely can increase your metabolic rate with exercise,” says fitness expert Cindy Whitmarsh, a trainer on ExerciseTV and author of 101 Ways to Work out With Weights. “Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. Every muscle cell you gain is like a little internal fire that burns calories, even while you’re sleeping.” Here are Whitmarsh’s top tips for revving up your routine, plus the best exercises to boost your metabolism.

You absolutely can increase your metabolic rate with exercise

2. Eight-count Body-builder With Push-up: Start at standing pose. Bring hands to the floor, jump feet back into a high plank. Jump feet out wide, do a push-up, jump feet back together, jump feet back to hands and stand up. Repeat five to 15 times. 3. Squat Into Bicep Curls and Overhead Shoulder Press: Stand holding weights by your sides. Squat down. Stand back up while doing a bicep curl. Perform overhead shoulder press, bring weights back to sides. Repeat eight to 15 times. 4. Walking Lunges While Alternating Bicep Curls and Lateral Shoulder Raises: Stand with weights in each hand. Lunge forward with right leg while doing a bicep curl with right arm. Repeat with left side. Then, lunge forward with right leg while lifting your right

Pump up Your Heart Rate Keeping your heart rate elevated for at least 30 minutes during your cardio routine will boost your metabolism and help your body burn fat faster. Whitmarsh recommends keeping your heart rate within 65 to 85 % of your heart rate maximum, which you can find by subtracting your age from 220. Multiply that number by 0.65 and then by 0.85 to find this magic fat-burning range. Then, use a heart rate monitor while exercising to help stay in that range. Try Interval Training Interval training -- alternating high-intensity exercise bursts with lower-intensity

5. Medicine Ball Drop-catch and Overhead Lift: Hold a medicine ball in front of your body with arms straight and legs slightly wider than shoulder width.

STOP SMOKING IN ONE HOUR AND STAY STOPPED FOR GOOD

Lift the ball overhead, keeping arms straight and engaging your core. Then, drop the ball down to the floor as you squat so your thighs are parallel to the floor. Catch the ball at the deepest part of your squat with your arms straight. Lift ball as you stand. Repeat 10 to 20 times.

Paralysed woman powers bionic arm with her mind A

PASSENGERS on Sir Richard Branson's airline, Virgin Atlantic, are to be able to make and receive phone calls while in the air. The facility, which also includes the sending and receiving of text messages, will be available, initially, on Virgin's new Airbus A330 aircraft flying from London to New York . It will also feature on the airline's Boeing 747 planes, which are currently going through a £50 million refurbishment. By the end of 2012, nearly 20 aircraft will provide the service. The A330 is undergoing a £100 million investment by Virgin, including a redesigned upper class (first class) cabin. The new mobile phone system will be available throughout the aircraft in all cabins and is targeted at business travellers. The service is not permitted during takeoff or landing, and American laws mean that it has to be turned off around 250 miles from US airspace. Virgin Atlantic's chief operating officer Steve Griffiths said: "We have listened to what customers want and connectivity in the air is always on the wish list."

Facebook share price increase values company at $100billion THE social networking company said that the increase was due to strong demand ahead of its flotation on the stock market on Friday. If shares sell at this price it would value the company at $100billion, making it worth more than Disney, Ford and Kraft Foods. The valuation is seen by some as a bet on the digital future, as the way in which we interact with each other online is constantly evolving. If investors snap up the 337.4million shares on offer at $36, Facebook would raise $12.1billion. The Menlo Park-based company is set to list on the Nasdaq following its flotation and if it sells strongly will rival Amazon in terms of financial worth. Facebook founder Mar Zuckerberg will stay in control of the company even after investors have bought into it, retaining 57.3 per cent of the voting power through shares he holds.

tetraplegic been able to drink coffee using a bionic arm powered by her thoughts, thanks to a tiny brain implant. Cathy Hutchinson who lost the use of her arms, legs and speech 14 years ago after a stroke, used the BrainGate device to translate her thoughts and take a sip of the drink. And as neurologist Dr Leigh Hochberg, of Brown University in the US, said, the joy on Mrs Hutchinson’s face was palpable. He said: ‘This was the first time in nearly 15 years that she has been able to pick up anything solely of her own volition – and the smile on her face when she did this was something that our team will never forget.’ Braingate pioneer Professor John Donoghue said they had implanted an aspirin-sized electrode array on to the patients’ motor cortex – the part of the brain that controls movement. Mrs Hutchinson, 58, was fitted via the chip to a computer controlling the arm which responded to the thought signals on movement her brain had sent it. ‘At the very beginning I had to concentrate and focus on the muscles I would use to perform certain functions,’ she said in the report published in journal Nature.

‘BrainGate felt natural and comfortable so I quickly got my accustomed to the trial.’ Prof Donoghue added: ‘We look forward to

advancing the technology so we will also be able to reconnect the brain directly to a person’s own limb.’

Classroom technology use analysed

EDUCATION Scotland is to look at how tablet computers and mobile devices are being used in classrooms and consider how they could be introduced in schools on a wider scale. The Scottish Government body will take stock of how existing schemes are working before providing recommendations to Education Secretary Michael Russell.

Almost 20 schools across 10 local authorities are already using devices such as iPads and Android technology to aid learning. Speaking during a visit to Sciennes primary in Edinburgh, Mr Russell said: "The range of mobile devices that are now available and the promise of what they can bring to teaching and learning is very exciting and something that

must be embraced. There are a number of pilots already under way around the country, including the use of iPads here at Sciennes. "I have asked Education Scotland for recommendations on how we can realise the benefits of mobile technology for all learners in Scotland, including ensuring how we get the best possible value for our schools, and whether national guidance is needed for the sector." Mr Russell said that in the existing pilots the local authorities and schools were paying for the equipment, or in some cases, the equipment was coming from manufacturers. Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme, he said there would be "substantial cost implications" involved in the introduction of such devices on a wider scale and admitted the Scottish Government was not in a position to provide tablet computers for every pupil. "We're not in that position, and indeed we don't know enough about whether we should be in that position, so this is a learning opportunity for all of us," he said. At one Aberdeen school, Kingswell primary, concerns were raised last year about the fairness and affordability of a tablet computer scheme which asked parents to pay for iPads for their children to use in class.

'Hashpoint' dispenser allows users to pick up cannabis 24 hours a day

Students construct 15ft sculpture with chewing gum

It's every stoner’s dream – a marijuana vending machine, preferably placed right next to another one dispensing crisps and chocolate bars!

B

Machines will be housed in cages, and can only be accessed via a valid registration card and finger-print identification.

ut this ‘Autospense’ machine lets registered users of the drug pick up their prescriptions, 24 hours a day. Sixteen US states – as well as Washington DC – allow patients with certain medical conditions to buy small quantities of cannabis. Hundreds of dispensaries have popped up across the country, but now a US firm has decided to cut out the middle man. Customers get PINs and cards to access to the Autospense, which offers a host of pot menu options. But The Dispensary Group, which makes the machines, doesn’t let just anyone use them. The machines are put behind cages that need a registration card to get past, while fingerprint authentication, CCTV and locks provide extra security. The company said the machines ‘introduce a higher standard of efficiency to a market known for being chaotic, poorly managed and counter culture’. It charges up to £1,235 a month to lease the machines. Legalising medical marijuana has become increasingly popular in the US since California started the trend in 1996.

TEACHERS normally spend much of their time stopping their charges from chewing gum but for more than 3,000 pupils, mastication was all part of a school project. This 4.5m (15 feet) high sculpture of a man with his arms raised aloft, created to mark the union of two Dutch art schools, is made entirely of chewing gum. The students, from De Eindhovense and SintLucas in the Netherlands, each chewed on a piece of gum before adding it to the structure. Jurian Strik, a spokesman from PR agency KesselsKramer, which was behind the project, said: ‘Youngsters no longer left their chewing gum under chairs and tables, but used it to create their own work of art.’ The work will stick around as gum can take five years to biodegrade. It will be at the STRP festival in Eindhoven in November. Chewing gum stuck to pavements costs councils millions of pounds a year to clean up, but this could soon be a thing of the past. Irish researchers have pioneered a new non-sticky, biodegradable gum by using cereal proteins instead of rubber. These proteins can be modified to increase their chewiness and could also be altered to have the same flavour and shelf-life as existing gum.

IT specialist attracts attention after walking his goats through the streets

Town begins issuing $85 fines for texting while walking

Time for your walk, calls Patrick Guilfoyle, and his charges accompany him obediently to the park. It’s an everyday routine but it’s met by stares of disbelief from passers-by – because Mr Guilfoyle is walking his goats. ALL five of them, on a lead, on the streets of south London. An IT specialist by day, the 50-year-old is also a dedicated amateur goat herd. He’s turned the ground floor of his home into a makeshift barn and his garden into a farm yard, complete with water troughs and hanging hay dispensers. Twitter has been awash with rumours of the man who takes his animals to graze the green around Croydon Minster and scrubland along the tram lines. Despite having no farming experience, Mr Guilfoyle took the extraordinary step of rearing goats last June following success keeping bees.

The Irishman said: ‘They are herd animals, so at first I thought I’d get three. But you know how it is, you go out to buy a family car and

www.brusnaenergysolutions.com

come home with a sports car.’ He said he generally gets a positive reaction when out with the goats. ‘I’ve had a couple of run-ins with dog walkers and one of my goats was attacked in the park, but in general people like it. You have people here who have probably never even seen a live goat.’ He is keen to stress that his animals, two females and three castrated males, are not pets but livestock which are destined to be slaughtered. ‘I keep them for meat. I got them from a farm where they were destined for the pot but the farmer had bottle-reared them and couldn’t face doing it himself.’

People texting while walking in Fort Lee, New Jersey, could be slapped with an $85 (£53) fine after police decided to clamp down on the activity. The Fort Lee Police Department has issued 117 tickets for reckless walking in the past month, with offenders being forced to pay the penalty. Text-walking could incur offenders a fine in a New Jersey town (Pic: Thinkstock/Comstock) Officers pointed out at least 20 pedestrians who had been hit by cars while texting and walking to justify the fine. Police chief Thomas Ripoli said: 'Pedestrians aren't watching where they're walking, they're not aware.'

What is a vocation? choosing a career or selecting a course at college. The process of discovering your vocation in life is called “discernment”. Discernment is faith-based decision making under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. For most people, the process of discerning their vocation takes several months and, often, years. True discernment takes place in an atmosphere of prayer over a period of time. “A soul receives much light and knowledge by means of the interior consolation it experiences, as well as through the discernment of spirits." St. Ignatius. Always remember that throughout your period of discernment that you are seeking to understand God’s will for your life. You are trying to discover how your talents and gifts can be used to serve God and others.

"FIND a job you love and you will never have to work a day again in your life” That's pretty good advice! And it has stood the test of time. Those words come from Confucius in 500 BC! Most people who hear it appreciate the wisdom that it contains. Rather than search for a 'job you love' it's much more fruitful to discern instead your vocation in life. A vocation in life is more than just the "job you love". A vocation is a call from God. But God’s call is not something which can be heard with our ears. And it is unlikely that there will be a bolt of lightning from on high. Instead, we discover our vocation through prayer and through a deep awareness of the presence of God in our lives, especially in ordinary daily events. Figuring out one’s vocation in life is a tough task but it is the key to answering the question, “what will I do with my life? ” Discovering Your Vocation "You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you." – John 15:16 Finding your vocation is quite different to

Here are some practical tips for discernment: Firstly, get into the habit of praying daily. Try to establish a period in the day when you can find silence. Be still and become aware of the presence of God. An ideal way to do this is to attend Mass daily. Try this discernment exercise: Having established a routine of daily prayer imagine that you have decided to enter religious life. Imagine that this is your final decision. Live with that for a few weeks. What feelings do you experience when you do this? It often helps to write down or “journal” your emotions. This simply involves keeping a diary where you record your feelings. Now, even if, after this, you have decided that you do not want to enter religious life, do the following- imagine that you have made a decision not to enter religious life. Live with this decision for some time. What feelings do you experience now? Compare this experience with the other. Which decision gives you the greatest sense of peace? This is a useful guide to where your vocation may lie.

History of the Alexian Brothers ST Alexis or Alexius was chosen by the Cellite Brothers as their chief Patron saint in 1469. They subsequently became known as the Alexian Brothers. The Congregation of Alexian Brothers is a religious brotherhood within the Catholic Church. We were founded in 1334 and emerged from an earlier group or brotherhood known as Beghards. The old Rule Book of the Brothers called us "Alexian or Cellite Brothers". Many streets today in Holland and Belgium still bear testimony to the existence of the Brothers prior to the Reformation; almost every large town or city, including Amsterdam, has a street named "Cellabroeder Straat" To recapture the early Alexians (or preAlexians) we have to go back in imagination to medieval Europe centering on the great cities of Aachen, Cologne and Antwerp. It was pretty well a scene of 'survival of the fittest' in the early thirteenth century-the 'big, and ugly and the bad'. In the middle of this scenario there existed several groups of monastic brothers who begged for bread and thus became known as Brot-Beghards. These Beghards were the 'pre-Alexian Brothers'. Beghards lived a communal life in small cells within their respective monastic communities, hence the name Cellites the title which is still retained in our Constitutions. Although monastic in character these Beghards served a specific function in that given at this time in the social fabric there

was an increase in aristocracy in both Church and State due to the increased population of the city centres and a selective distribution of varied talents. As a result there was an increase in capitalism and as an inevitable consequence an increase in the number of urban poor. The Beghards were active in the lanes of urban poverty, nursing the sick, burying the dead and preaching the Gospel by word and deed. In amongst all this the Beghards were inspired by a new spirituality, Scholasticism, introduced by a German Dominican, Meister Eckhart (1260-1327) 'God's foundation is my foundation and My foundation is God's foundation. Here I am on my own ground, just as God is on his own ground. Actions spring up from the ground Without asking why?' the Beghards were inspired by this because of the identity between the believer and God with Beghards and Christ. Already the spark underlying the Alexian charism and spirituality had begun. Black Plague: Between 1347-1383 there were four major outbreaks of the Black Plague (Bubonic Plague) in Europe. Without the medical knowledge and preventative measures and modern drugs people in medieval Europe died in their thousands. Within three years, 1347-1350, twenty

million people died, twice the number of those who perished in world war 11. In amongst all this the Alexian Brothers made their significant impression on the history of mankind. We must remember that the early Alexians were still Beghards. It was not the response to the needs of the plague that originated the early Alexians. The distinguishing hallmark came as a response to those struck by the plague, a task very few had the courage to perform. Ultimately, this was a result of their roots in their unconscious charism. Whereas before they had responded to need without asking why, these Beghards saw their actions as a response to a religious need. This seems to have come about by their pondering on the nature of man and the human person. The person, is a tangible part of God. So when a person is dying they are reaching the limit of their earthly existence. The Beghards aimed to assist the dying person through nursing, caring and thus prepare the person for eternal life. Even after death the ministry had not concluded because there was a ritual to ensure a Christian burial which the Beghards carried out to ensure proper completion. It was the Beghards commitment, dedication, endeavour and willingness to risk, even to the point of loosing a number of their own community, during the Black Plague that brought about their recognition in Rome. By 1472 they were declared a reli-

gious Congregation by Pope Sixtus 1V. It was about this time the Beghards choose St Alexis (or the Latin spelling St Alexius) as their Patron Saint. TheRule of St Augustine was also adopted at this time. After the Black Death the Alexians were engaged in a variety of ministries, but the most common and unifying ministerial expression was the care and burial of plague and pest victims. By 1600 the Alexians were well known for their care of the mentally ill, pestilence and plague victims. Many other Alexian communities remained tied to burials, home nursing and plague care until the nineteenth century. Today the brothers work in a variety of ministries. Professionally we are trained to work mainly within the health field. St Alexius Knock The community at St Alexius Knock, Co. Mayo was set up in 2008. At present the house serves three purposes. Administaration of the Region House of Formation Hospitality and befriending We live a simple life style and work on our small holding growing vegetables in our garden and polytunnel. We also keep hens and ducks which supply the house with fresh eggs and we have three goats. We aim to have the house as environmentally friendly as possible. We have a ground source heating system and the water is heated by solar.

Notre Dame Folk Choir to visit Attymass T

he Notre Dame Folk Choir under the direction of Mr. Steve Warner will visit The Fr. Peyton Memorial Centre, Attymass and perform in Attymass Church on 30th May 2012. Fr. Patrick Peyton C.S.C. was a graduate of Notre Dame University, Indiana; and is their most famous and world wide known graduate. It is indeed a privilege to welcome the choir to Attymass so that they can experience the home land of Fr. Peyton C.S.C. The Notre Dame Folk choir began singing in the late 1970s, during a time of great changes in the liturgy. With the advent of the 1980s, the choir moved far beyond the conventional definition of a “folk group.” There are now more than four dozen men’s and women’s voices, flute, organ, violins, guitar, string bass, Celtic harp, cello, and bodhrán in the choir.

About the Choir Primarily the choir is an undergraduate organisation; the choir serves the University as one of its principal liturgical choirs. However, an increasing number of graduate students, faculty, and professional staff from the University have joined in recent years. This summer, from May 21 to June 4 2012, the choir will sing their way across Ireland and Scotland including the areas of Edinburgh, Wexford, Galway, Attymass and Dublin. Starting in the mid-1980's, the Notre Dame Folk Choir began to make national and international tours as a part of its regular ministry. It was Notre Dame's first liturgical choir to tour overseas when it traveled to Ireland in 1988. The choir returned to Ireland in '90, '92, '94, '97, 2000, '03, '04, and '08. They included England in

their 1992 and 2000 tours, performing for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Reverend George Carey, and their 2008 tour took them to Scotland for the very first time before they journeyed back once again to Dublin to sing a Mass at Trinity College with His Eminence Seán Cardinal Brady, Archbishop of Armagh. Their regular trips overseas have taken them to parishes rich and poor, from the cathedrals and

churches of Canterbury, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and Galway. In August 1993 the folk choir was one of a handful of American choirs invited to sing for World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado and for His Holiness John Paul II at the concluding Papal Liturgy. Nationally, the folk choir visited the major cities of the Great Lakes region in 1991, New England in the spring of 1995, and the Pacific Northwest in

2006. In 1993 the choir began taking shorter, more condensed mini-tours during breaks in the academic year. These trips, spanning a long weekend, have taken them to Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the greater Chicago area. All of these tours form part of an important service of collaboration with the parishes and liturgy centers of the Church beyond our campus.

50th International Eucharistic Congress coming to Dublin

A

fter more than two decades of scandals, declining Mass attendances and religious vocations, and an apostolic visitation by the Holy See, 2012 might not seem to be the best year for an international religious festival on the “island of saints and scholars”. Yet that is exactly what is happening this coming June when the 50th International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) will take place in Dublin, Ireland, having as its theme “The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with each other”. What is an International Eucharistic Congress? It is a gathering of Catholics, and indeed of some non-Catholics, from all over the world to promote the centrality of the Eucharist for the Church, im-

prove understanding of the Eucharist and its celebration, and draw attention to its social dimension. Dr Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin and primate of Ireland, in choosing a theme of communion, focuses attention on an element of Eucharistic theology found especially in the writings of St Paul. This aspect had not been so prominent in the reflections of the Church for many centuries and it is a suitable theme given the painful period which the Church in Ireland continues to traverse. The first sign for many Irish Catholics that IEC 2012 was coming to Ireland was news of the arrival of the (Dominican) Congress Bell in their area – to their parish or cathedral church. The last IEC held in Ireland was in 1932 and included the ringing of the fragile bell of fifth century St Patrick, apostle to the Irish. Unfortunately, St Patrick’s bell cannot be rung as part of IEC 2012. It is said that the use of church bells originated in Irish monasteries and from there spread throughout Western Europe eventually being accepted by the Eastern Churches. The bell associated with IEC 2012 in Dublin did not come from a monastery but served nonetheless for many years as the bell of an Irish religious community – the Dominican convent of Portstewart, Northern Ireland. The congress bell has been travelling Ireland and elsewhere as an invitation to Catholics to come to IEC 2012. Tens of thousands have even been given the opportunity to ring the bell themselves with Pope Benedict himself not letting the chance pass him by when the bell was in Rome.
