for me. The fact that somebody would have enough trust in me to marry me and to take on my name is a huge vote of confidence," Mr Page, who is now a social worker, told the Irish Independent. Sean Page who is a former curate of St Anne's parish in Sligo, hit the headlines ten years ago after he decided to leave his celibate life behind him and move in with a local mother of seven. He recognises that relationship was doomed to failure and after all the publicity he turned his back on Sligo and moved to Britain. Con’t on Page 2

Former local priest to wed mother of five who he met online continued from page 1 "I notice you have been making the headlines again recently," wrote Dr Jones. "Sean, I would be grateful if you would write me a letter requesting laicisation. It is important, in the interests of all concerned, that your situation in relation to the church be regularised." To this day Sean Page remains a strong opponent of celibacy, saying that he did not see any point to it. "I couldn't stay in the church and feel like a normal person. When you see all the clerical child sex-abuse scandals that have hit the church, my situation is nothing in comparison" he was quoted as saying Following their wedding, the happy couple plan a simple buffet reception with a DJ in a local pub before travelling to Ireland, where they will spend a few days in Dublin and Galway.

Traditional is still trendy for Irish weddings
A recent survey has revealed that 71 per cent of Irish people want to get married in Ireland and in a church. Despite the fact that people attending mass has seriously declined in the past decade, it is still important for many people to exchange their vows in a church. For the 29 per cent who do choose to get married abroad, Italy is the most popular destination. In a long list of wedding etiquette no-nos, laughing during the vows is the most unpopular mistake at 48 per cent. Close behind that was bringing a crying baby to the ceremony and arriving late. Only four per cent of those who took part in the survey thought it rude to take photos throughout the ceremony. At the reception, Irish people think speeches should be short and snappy at less than 15 minutes, and they want the best man to be polite to the bride, to thank the parents, and to complement the guests. On presents, porcelain figurines are deemed the most useless of all, but cash and vouchers scored well. The majority of those who participated said they felt a cash gift of between €50-100 was normal.
Hargadons Bar picks up top award ONE food premises in the North West scooped up awards at this year’s Food and Wine magazine awards, with Hargadons bar and restaurant in Co Sligo picking up the Good value award. The prestigious award is a great honour for the Sligo town pub, who pride themselves on serving good quality, locally produced food. Food and Wine Magazine is a well known publication among foodies and an award from its esteemed panel of judges is a privilege for any restaurateur. Considering that Hargaons use only locally and organically produced food where possible, the Good Value award is especially impressive.

Worker who dumped medical files identified
WHILE the HSE suffered further embarrassment last week, following the finding of patient records from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ballina, in a bin at Connolly Street, it is understood they have identified the worker they believe dumped the medical records of 100 patients in a bin outside Roscommon County Hospital. According to media reports last weekend, a person who works in the health service in Mullingar dumped the records of patients from the Midland Regional Hospital in the bin. It was reported that a single individual has been identified and is currently being interviewed by HSE officials over the scandal. The HSE has declined to confirm this information, as it is part of an ongoing inquiry. In a response to a query from another newspaper in the region, the HSE declined to comment on the reports of an individual having been identified; stating only that the matter remained under investigation.
10% of Mayo’s Community Nursing beds to close AFTER much speculation towards the end of last week, the HSE has confirmed that more than 10 per cent of the beds in public nursing homes and district hospitals in Mayo will be closed on a phased basis. The confirmation came following the disclosure of an internal document which revealed that 59 beds from a total of 409 across eight community units would close. The document in question proposed the closure of nine beds at McBride Nursing Home, Westport, six at St. Augustine’s in Ballina, 10 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, 6 at Swinford District Hospital, 19 at Belmullet District Hospital, but none at Belmullet Community Hospital. Nine will also go at the D’Alton Home, Claremorris, with none in St. Fionan’s in Achill. The following is the text of the statement issued by the HSE: “There are over four hundred public beds in eight Community Nursing Units in
County Mayo. Various issues impact on the number of beds that can safely be provided in these units, including HIQA standards in relation to the physical environment and space and the staffing levels required. The difficulty in replacing staff who retire or resign has an inevitable impact on the number of beds that can be maintained safely. The intention in County Mayo is to gradually reduce the number of beds on a phased basis, by 59 across the Community Nursing Units. Many of these beds are vacant in any event, including nine of the beds identified in Belmullet Community Hospital. “Our primary concern is to ensure that we can deliver a service to our patients to the highest standards in our Community Nursing Units. We will not be transferring any patients as part of this process, given that the beds concerned are already vacant in many cases. We are keeping this under review on a continuous basis.”

Weekly Farm Fun Summercamps from 19th July'
EXCITEMENT is mounting ahead of RehabCare’s inaugural fundraising ride-out, The Trek, taking place on Saturday September 3 at 12 midday. The trek will start at the RehabCare resource centre in Aughamore Far and will continue to Union Wood before later returning. The event is unique in seeing Sligo’s equestrian community come together for the first time – all in support of a very worthy cause – and the community is being urged to join in the fun by registering their interest and bringing along their own horse or pony. RehabCare operates a wide variety of responsive health and social care programmes which reach into communities the length and breadth of Ireland. Choice, quality and personalised services are the cornerstones of RehabCare, which prides itself on the flexibility of programmes in meeting the individual wishes and requirements of each client. In Sligo, RehabCare currently provides a range of services to more than 65 people from all around the county, including a resource centre in Aughamore Far for people with disabilities and those on the autistic spectrum, an outreach after-hours service for people with disabilities living in the community, and supported accommodation services in Sligo town. “The Trek is a unique opportunity for Sligo’s horsey folk to get out and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with family and friends,”
says Eamonn Wheeler, Community Services Manager, RehabCare. “We are looking for riders of all ages to register with us, bring along their horse or pony, and take a sponsorship card to raise as much money as they can for our local centre. After The Trek we are hosting a BBQ in the Aughamore Far resource centre and all are welcome. This will get underway at 5pm and promises to be a great social occasion!” “The Trek has already been warmly received and supported by a wide variety of groups in the Sligo equestrian world who will be providing volunteer stewards and marshals. Benbulben Riding Club, Sligo Hunt Pony Club and Sligo Harriers are encouraging their members to get involved either by riding or by volunteering. We are also being well supported by our local community and would like to say a special word of thanks to the local landowners who have given us permission to cross their land and to Coillte for facilitating the use of Union Wood.” “So I would encourage everyone to come along and support The Trek in whatever way they can – they’ll be supporting services for people with disabilities in their own community while having a great day out at the same time.” For further information on The Trek and to register your interest, contact Leah McNulty on 086 7714138 or email leah.mcnulty@rehabcare.ie

Halting of Road Projects – Taoiseach under pressure AN Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, certainly knows what it’s like to be under pressure in his own region over political promises and expectations. First there was the 24/7 commitment for Roscommon Hospital. Now, he will be put under pressure for completion of roadworks on the N5 despite the announcement by Transport Minister Leo Varadkar that works on all major road projects be suspended. Mayo County Council is to be told to get all the necessary paperwork up to date in respect of the €40m N5 Castlebar to Westport route. The long-awaited new road between the two major towns of west Mayo is one of 45 road proposals being shelved. But the latest postponement of the project represents an embarrassment to the Fine Gael party in the county which gave a commitment on the matter in advance of last February’s general election to get it started. However, sources close to Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister of State Michael Ring have revealed that ‘the N5 has not
been abandoned completely’. “Whatever level of priority it can be given by the Fine Gael party, it will be given. That includes advising Mayo County Council to have the scheme ready to roll because some funding is coming down the line,” stated the spokesperson, who did not wish to be named. While such a statement will be interpreted by the public as mere political spin, there is growing pressure on Deputy Kenny to rescue the proposal in some shape or form. Many observers of the local political scene are already questioning the benefit of having a Taoiseach who is not in a position to deliver major investment to the county. Certain assurances in respect of upgrading the N5 were given by Fine Gael to Mayo industrialists who highlighted the problems being consistently posed to their operations by an inferior road network. Minister Varadkar confirmed he had ‘instructed the NRA to rein in spending on planning and preparatory works’, a move

that would have been approved in advance by Deputy Kenny. “Specifically, the NRA is taking all road projects to the end of their current stage of planning and will suspend them at that point,” added the minister.

'Noose tightening' in Facebook ownership case
A judge has given Facebook access to the personal email accounts of a man suing for half ownership of the social networking website and ordered him to explain why he cannot produce documents its lawyers believe are evidence. Proof that Paul Ceglia's case is a fraud has been sitting on a Chicago law firm's email server since 2004, Facebook lawyer Orin Snyder told the federal judge in New York on Wednesday. An email that Ceglia sent to a former business associate at the firm includes a scanned version of the two-page contract he and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg
signed, Snyder said. Unlike the one Ceglia filed, it does not mention Facebook, only a street-mapping database Ceglia had hired Zuckerberg to work on, he said. "The noose is tightening around the neck of this plaintiff, and he knows it," Snyder said during a four-hour procedural hearing that had each side accusing the other of dirty tricks. Snyder said Ceglia had artificially aged his "phony" contract with light and chemicals, backdated computer files and transferred others to portable storage devices, which he had probably destroyed.
Ceglia's lawyer, Jeffrey Lake, countered that Facebook had tried to "poison the jury pool" by releasing what should have been confidential documents and implied Facebook had planted damning evidence on Ceglia's computers, a statement he backed away from after the hearing. In the end, Facebook gained access to Ceglia's personal email accounts and additional ink sampling from the contract. US magistrate judge Leslie Foschio also denied Ceglia's request for a set of relevant Zuckerberg emails and ordered Ceglia to explain why he cannot produce five portable storage drives that Facebook's experts believe contain the scanned version of the contract. Ceglia says he lost them, his lawyer said. "Asking me to produce them will be like asking me to produce a unicorn or a leprechaun," Lake said. Ceglia has been waiting out the case in Ireland and was not at the hearing. The man's lawsuit claims that

Irish Post newspaper to close THE Irish Post newspaper, based in London, is to close with the loss of 10 jobs, it was announced last week. The weekly newspaper has been owned by Thomas Crosbie Holdings (TCH) since 2003. Last Wednesday’s publication was the papers final edition. Dan Linehan, Chief Executive Officer, Regional Newspapers at TCH, said the decision to close the Irish Post was taken as a result of the severe economic downturn and significantly reduced advertising revenues. “I would like to pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of the staff at the Irish Post. They have been part of our Group for eight years and they have tried very hard to make the newspaper work. Regrettably, persistent trading losses and the current economic climate have made the title unsustainable”. The newspaper was established in 1970 and was previously owned by Jefferson Smurfit.

A gallant Roscommon minor team may have lost out to Tipperary on Sunday in Croke Park, but the team’s success to date has helped raise much needed funds for a worthy cause. Over two thousand euro has been raised for the people of Somalia as part of a special auction of the Roscommon Minor Jersey on Shannonside FM last week. Bidding started off at 300 euro on the Breakfast show and remained steady throughout the day.
Patrick Mollaghan from Mollaghan Transport in Ardagh, County Longford, was the highest bidder for the signed jersey at one thousand and fifty euro. Another person, who wishes to remain anonymous and who had offered one thousand euro has agreed to still donate the money despite losing out on the jersey. Therefore, just over two thousand euro has been raised as part of the special auction held in conjunction with the Somalia Urgent Relief Fund.

A new study has found that thin children are more likely to be carrying ‘good fat’, which helps them burn energy. The research revolves around the role of so-called ‘brown fat’, which is present in large numbers of children but only a few adults. Brown fat is different to normal ‘white’ fat because it metabolises energy, rather than storing it as more fat reserves. Some 44 per cent of children were found to carry brown fat in the study published by the Journal of Pediatrics which effectively
showed that thin children have more brown fat, while overweight ones have less. The study’s authors said their results could provide a way to fight rising child obesity. Obesity is a growing problem in Ireland, with more than a quarter of men and one in five women clinically obese. “Increasing the amount of brown fat in children may be an effective approach at combating the ever increasing rate of obesity and diabetes in children,” the study’s senior author Aaron Cypess said.

Survey shows Donegal and Longford residents not ‘Culture Vultures’ on hols THE results of a light-hearted poll carried out by AA Travel Insurance which examines whether Irish tourists are predominantly “culture vultures” or “beach bums” when visiting foreign shores has revealed that people from Sligo, Mayo and Leitrim are more likely to try and soak up the local atmosphere than their counterparts from Donegal and Longford. A significant majority are now willing to tear themselves away from the pool or beach to go in search of cultural enrichment and to experiment with the local language and food, it shows. Although most people are open to new experiences while on holidays, people from Donegal and Longford appears to be a bit more reluctant to fully embrace the travel experience. Residents of Longford and Roscommon were among the least likely to forgo inhibitions and try out the local language, while one in three Donegal natives said they would seldom or never try the local dishes. They were also found least likely to venture away from the main thoroughfare in search of a cultural experience. Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo residents were found to be more likely to try local foods, attempt simple phrases in the native language, swot up on local history before taking off and take at least one cultural day trip.

Orion spaceship set for new tests
technology news & science
Third of teachers 'bullied through internet' A spaceship that could carry the next wave of astronauts to an asteroid or beyond is being prepared for a new round of tests at a Lockheed Martin facility near Denver. Engineers have attached a launch-abort system to the nose of the capsule and will subject the combined spacecraft to a series of experiments to see if it can withstand the rigours of blast-off, Lockheed Martin said. The launch-abort system, essentially a rocket attached to the nose of the capsule, could lift the capsule off its booster rocket and carry it to safety if a problem developed before or during launch. Lockheed Martin, of Bethesda, Maryland, is building the capsule, called the Orion MultiPurpose Crew Vehicle, under a 7.5 billion dollar Nasa contract issued in 2006. The capsule was originally part of President George W Bush's 100 billion dollar programme to return astronauts to the moon, called Constellation. President Barack Obama cancelled the programme last year, saying the US would concentrate on developing new rocket technology instead. Mr Obama then revived the Orion portion of the programme amid criticism that his plan lacked details and put US space leadership at risk. Orion does not yet have a destination. Nasa has said it could service the space station in low Earth orbit or take four astronauts on more distant missions of up to 21 days. Lockheed Martin officials have said Orion could explore the far side of the moon, land humans on asteroids or take them to one of the moons of Mars, where they could control robotic instruments on the surface. In the next round of tests, the capsule and launch-abort system will be subjected to sound vibrations at a Lockheed Martin facility in Waterton Canyon south of Denver. The 55-foot (16.7-metre)-tall assembly will be lifted by a crane into a tall, lift shaft-like chamber. Inside, more than a dozen horns powered by compressed nitrogen will create a thunderous low-pitch noise at 150 decibels. That will trigger vibrations like the ones generated by a launch or deployment of the abort system. The abort system was successfully tested in May 2010 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. An Orion mock-up was rocketed about a mile into the air at speeds of about 450 mph in just 2.5 seconds. The capsule then deployed parachutes and floated to the ground. It landed about a mile north of the launch site. After the vibration tests are finished, the spacecraft will be taken to the Nasa Langley Research Centre in Hampton, Virginia, for landing tests. It would land in the ocean.
MORE than one-in-three teachers has been subjected to bullying online, with more than a quarter being carried out by parents, according to a new report. Facebook and Twitter are among the websites being used to intimidate teachers who give children bad grades or whom they simply do not like, according to research by academics working for the UK Safer Internet Centre. More than a quarter (26%) of the online bullying was being carried out by parents. Their study even found one headteacher who had been driven to the brink of suicide by a year-long online hate campaign. Andy Phippen, professor of social responsibility in IT at Plymouth Business School, who carried out the survey, said: "You expect a little bit of abuse from children. But when parents launch 12-month campaigns of abuse you have to think 'something has gone wrong here'. "Parents are saying 'you gave my child a bad grade, I'm going to give you a slating on Facebook' - it is something that is growing and growing." More than a third (35%) of 377 respondents to an anonymous internet-based survey said that either they, or their colleagues, have been subject to some form of online abuse. Abuse was most likely to come from pupils (72% of incidents) but parents were responsible for 26% of cases. The report noted: "It seems to a subset of the population the teacher is no longer viewed as someone who should be supported in developing their child's education, but a person whom it is acceptable to abuse if they dislike what is happening in the classroom." One headteacher told the team: "A parent set up a Google group and devoted it to saying unpleasant things about me. I started off as "the Head" and then he started referring to me just by my surname. He invited other parents to join in but only one did."
Criminals target of Facebook scheme
Criminals can now be reported to the police on Facebook under a new scheme. Lothian and Borders Police`s 'Made From Crime' initiative will allow internet users to report their concerns online, anonymously if they wish, using the popular social networking site or via Bluetooth to link directly to the Crimestoppers website. 'Made From Crime' is the first Proceeds of Crime Act scheme of
its kind in Scotland, and has the backing of both the Scottish Government and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. It is designed to make full use of the Act, which allows officers to seize assets that have been purchased through criminal activity. Assistant Chief Constable Iain Livingstone said: "We know there are people living beyond their means on the proceeds of crime, be it through the purchase of flash
cars, designer clothes or expensive jewellery, and that communities are suffering from the side effects of drug dealing, violence and other associated crimes. "I personally appeal to local communities who have any information to come forward immediately, either to Crimestoppers or to Lothian and Borders Police. Similarly, I would assure people who are trapped by those threatening them with violence or retribution, either associates or partners, that we will help them and tackle the violence and criminality they face. We will act on intelligence and bring offenders to justice." Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "Lothian and Borders Police, like Scotland's other police forces,
is taking the problem of dirty money obtained through criminal activity very seriously. "Those who make a comfortable or cushy living from activities such as drug dealing are not only deceitful to hard working and honest members of the public, but are involved in despicable acts that cause great harm to our communities. They should simply not be able to evade the law. "More than ÂŁ41 million has already been seized from crooks such as these through the Proceeds of Crime Act and through the Scottish Government's Cashback initiative. We are seeing it reinvested in fantastic new community projects in Edinburgh, the Lothians and across Scotland." Solicitor General Lesley Thomson QC said: "We have vast powers available to us through the proceeds of crime legislation and I am delighted that this new initiative will allow people to use social media to report anonymously those who they see flaunting illgotten gains before them."

They're the shoes every blooming bride should make a bee-line for - unless she suffers from hay fever. Florist Nikola Mihailovic, 29, is rushed off his feet providing wedding day shoes for brides which he painstakingly decorates with real flowers. "Every girl wants to look like a princess on her wedding day and I've found a great way for them feel that way," he said. "It started when I did them for a friend and people kept asking and asking." Mr Mihailovic, from Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, travels to every wedding personally with a small battery powered fridge to keep the blooms fresh until the moment the bride walks down the aisle. "I have customers all over the world and had to send a pair to Egypt recently with a freezer because of the local heat," he added.

Drink driving conviction for Motability scooter drunkard A pensioner has been banned from the road for drink driving, after falling of his Motability scooter at 4mph. The embarrassed drunkard, 75-year-old Arthur Dick, was three times over the drink-drive limit when he fell of his scooter on his way home from a pub. The pensioner, from Elgin in Scotland, was found mid-afternoon on the floor next to his scooter. Police were called and he was breathalysed. Speaking to 'The Sun' newspaper, he said: "I only went in for one pint but friends kept buying me vodkas. I thought I was sober enough to drive home. I can't remember anything about the accident. My mates are winding me up something rotten." Mr Dick, who has held his licence since the age of 17 and never had a single penalty point in that time, uses the scooter get about because of circulation problems. He'll be 78 by the time he gets his licence back, although it shouldn't prove too much an issue because it's not a legal requirement for Motability scooter ownership. He has, however, been advised not to "go on outings to the club" on his scooter by local Sheriff Susan Raeburn.
Huge snake found in engine during Test An 11-year-old boy called police in Germany to complain that his mother keeps making him do chores during his summer school holidays. "Hello. My mother is putting me into forced labour," began Leon, not his real name, during a five-minute call to emergency number 110. "What do you have to do?" the police officer answering the call asked the boy. "I have to clean up the terrace. I've got to work the whole day," said Leon. The boy's mother, who was standing next to him, explained to police that Leon had been threatening to report her for weeks. "Just now, when he was told to pick up a few bits of paper lying round on the floor, he wanted to ring the police," she said. "Actually, he plays the whole day long. Whenever you ask him to tidy away his own mess, he reckons it's forced labour. So I thought, just let him try." Police in the western city of Aachen released an edited transcript of the call before closing the case.
A British mechanic got the shock of his life during a routine inspection - he lifted the bonnet of a customer's car and found a five-foot long boa constrictor nestling underneath. The five-inch thick snake was curled up in a space in the engine bay of a blue MINI Cooper. The car was about to undergo an MOT test at Carringtons of Oxford. Mechanic Wayne Hunt, said: "We immediately called the RSPCA to collect the snake, since it didn't belong to the customer and we had no idea who owned it. "We also wanted to make sure we didn't harm the reptile in removing it, as we're more used to working on brakes than snakes!" According to the RSPCA the snake looked thinner than a normal sized boa constrictor, which suggests that it had been nestled under the bonnet for a while. It's thought to be the first incident of its kind in the UK, and no-one knows where the snake came from.

Improve Your Hearing
HEARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional. Here are five assorted tips and drills you can do to make sure you maintain your hearing ability.
€159
Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill, and irritating noises every day such as power tools in your workplace or road-works are detrimental to your hearing. Avoid them at all cost. Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose & throat) Check-ups Add visiting an EENT doctor to your list of bi-annual check-ups alongside your usual ones, like visits to the dentist and general medical check-ups. This helps maintain all your senses, not just hearing. EENTs can give you preventive medications to treat any mild problems you may have with hearing before these worsen.

Vitamins and Medication There are four vitamins and medications that have been tested and proven to help in the maintenance of hearing. These haven't been noted to significantly enhance a person's hearing acuity, but they have been known to prevent the deterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg a day), AlpaLipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day). Sound Source Location Exercise Here is the first drill for sharpening your hearing. This helps your ear's directional sense and requires a partner. Get some small noisemaker like a horn or even a small radio speaker. Go to a large room with very little acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do
this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passerby so you might want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you. Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made. Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then

later throw in a third... you get the picture. This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear. Keeping Your Ears Clean Bacteria, (known as “wax”) builds up in ears very fast. Although this is the case, a small amount of bacteria is actually good for your ears. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from other bacteria, fungi, insects and water. But excess wax can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing. That is why it is essential to use ear-buds or sprays to clean your ears twice or three times a month. Avoid cleaning your ears everyday as this will irritate your ears.

7 Ways to Prevent Spots & Blackheads By Megan Fennell
We all know how frustrating it can be when a blackhead or whitehead begins to show up. But there are simple ways that we can reduce them or get rid of them. Exfoliate The simplest way to keep the pores clear is to exfoliate regularly, followed by a product which will help peel away blackheads. Look for medicated products containing resorcinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. There are ranges of CLEARASIL® products that help prevent black heads or exfoliate the skin. Clean Hair Keep your hair away from your face. When greasy hair touches or rubs off your skin it causes bacteria to build up and can spread infection. UV Rays Sunshine or ultra-violet light encourages skin peeling, and so helps to clear blocked pores. So sunbathing or use of sun-beds in moderation can be helpful.
skin's surface, infecting the surrounding tissue. Bad spots need a doctor's advice, and he/she may suggest antibiotic or even hormone therapy. Whiteheads are plugs of sebum under the skin which are cysts in sebaceous or sweat glands. You can treat them yourself by pricking with a sterile needle (dip in boiling water) and squeezing out. Then apply antiseptic cream. If in doubt, seek professional treatment. Rehydrate Your Skin Drink plenty of water to keep the healthy oils in your skin working. Also, if you’re sweating this causes water to excrete from the body leaving the skin dry and agitates it. Also avoid too much sugar in your diet as it increases your risk of getting acne. To Squeeze or not to Squeeze? If blackheads look ready to pop out, you could try removing them gently by using a blackhead extractor. This is a neat little instrument with a hole at one end, available from chemists. Pressure around the blackhead helps it to pop out through the hole. Use tissue not your fingers to prevent bacteria spreading from your hands. Steam your face first to soften both the skin and the material blocking the pores. Then wrap your fingers in tissues and gently roll against either side of the blackhead. If it won't budge easily, leave well alone, as too much pressure will bruise and break the skin, making your face red and blotchy for days to come, and possibly leaving tiny broken veins. Finish by applying a medicated cream to the empty pore. Only ever squeeze a spot with a definite head that looks about to burst - pressure on an unready infected spot spreads bacteria below the

PUZZLE TIME ACROSS
By Megan Fennell
History of Toothbrushes Toothbrushing tools date back to 3500-3000 BC when the Babylonians and the Egyptians made a brush by fraying the end of a twig. Tombs of the ancient Egyptians have been found containing toothsticks alongside their owners. Around 1600BC, the Chinese developed “chewing sticks” which were made from aromatic tree twigs to freshen breath. Egyptians are believed to have started using a paste to clean their teeth around 5000BC, before toothbrushes were invented. Ancient Greeks and Romans are known to have used toothpastes, and people in China and India first used toothpaste around 500BC. Ingredients used included a powder of ox hooves' ashes and burnt eggshells, that was combined with pumice. The Greeks and Romans favored more abrasiveness and their toothpaste ingredients included crushed bones and oyster shells. The Romans added more flavoring to help with bad breath, as well as powdered charcoal and bark. The Chinese used a wide variety of substances in toothpastes over time that have included ginseng, herbal mints and salt.

Anfield Football Grounds Anfield, now home to one of Englands most successful and historic clubwas originally home to Everton Football Club. However the rising rent at Anfield, prompted Houlding, a football legend, to suggest that Everton FC should buy Anfield. The price seemed high and the cluns committee members said no. The on-going deadlock over this situation resulted in the vast majority of the Board and players of Everton F.C. walking out to build a new ground. Houlding, as the ambitious businessman he was, saw a great future for the club. He wanted the club to have its own home ground and wanted them to buy land so the club could expand in due course. Most of the Everton FC board members failed to share his forward thinking and lacked confidence. They wanted a long term rent deal on all the land, but Houlding wanted a rent at a price considered too high for the Club. The official split between Anfield and Everton took place on the 12th of March 1892. At a members meeting one of the opponents George Mahon, led the meeting when John Houlding unexpectedly turned up. Mahon stood up to give the club's President the chair. But surrounded by "enemies" Mr. Houlding said the famous words: "I'm here on a trial, and a criminal never takes the chair". He then left the club with 18-19 other members. On the first of September 1892 Liverpool AFC played their first match at Anfield and Anfield has been their home ever since, its connections with Everton almost forgotten. Dream On.... Research shows you cannot snore and dream at the same time. Adults dream off and on, for a total of about an hour and half to three hours every night.e In a lifetime. the average person will have spent a quarter of a century asleep, of which six years or more will have been spent dreaming—and almost all of those dreams are forgotten upon waking The average person has about 1,460 dreams a year with about four per night.

So far, 591 people have been charged but as the Police continue their arrests these number looks set to multiply. "Can you blame them?" they're doing something criminal but they're also trying to get attention. We can carry on ignoring them for as long as we like but it's not going to fix the problem” the courage in the words of this London bike mechanic who admits will probably never open his business again due to such immeasurable losses he endured in the last few days is admirable. Like him, the government must recognise and try to alleviate the cause of this obvious tension. It is highly unlikely that such rampage was based solely on the opportunity to obtain “free” TV’s there must be although not obvious some unease within the British society. As a spokesperson confirmed "the violence that we've seen ... it's not only against individuals but it's destroying the very fabric of society, not just for now but for years to come, and that's why the government has to get a grip of this”. While many of the persons involved in these days of turmoil will have perfect records and considered valued members of society it is vital that every single individual who played a prat regardless of how minor in these riots are punished. It is estimated that by the time recovery has been completed and courts finished the past five days will cost the British Government £200million. That is £200million that is so badly needed in so many sectors of Britain’s economy yet it will prevent the country’s development for a number of years to come. The real tragedies of this week were the five men who lost their lives. Five British citizens who were attempting to protect their livelihoods, restore peace and resume normality yet because of the infantile antics of a minority of the British public families are today forced to wake up without a father, a son, a husband, a friend. On Saturday morning Britain woke up to a world that noone could have imagined seven days ago. Charred buildings, shattered glass, empty business premises, courts forced to sit for 24hour days, widows and orphans portray just how cruel and thoughtless mankind can really be.

MARY NOONAN EXHIBITION AT THE LINENHALL
One Chance. One Shot. Fight Night. No Excuses. The gripping story of a boxing comeback is brought vividly to life in the dynamic “Fight Night”, a one-man play featuring a remarkable performance by Aonghus Óg McAnally, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 8th September at 8.00pm. Now, after the birth of his son, Dan takes the first tentative steps on his road to redemption. Written by Gavin Kostick and directed by Bryan Burroughs, this fastpaced and engaging solo performance by Aonghus Óg McAnally combines intense physicality with a classic Dublin wit in a storytelling experience that will leave audiences both exhausted and exhilarated. Winner of both Best Actor and the Bewley’s Little Gem Award in Dublin’s ABSOLUT Fringe 2010. Production presented by Rise Productions in association with Lisa Richards Agency. “CHASING SHADOWS” THE FULL IRISH PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION This coming week is the last chance to see “Chasing Shadows” is a fascinating exhibition of black-and-white photographs at the Linenhall Arts Centre by Dublin musician and photographer Danny Diamond that celebrates Irish traditional music “in its continual evolution and flux”. Danny has been exhibited in Ireland and in the United States. This is Danny’s 3rd solo exhibition, and is presented as part of THE FULL IRISH Traditional series at the Linenhall Arts Centre.
Continuing for the month of August at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is the latest exhibition by Claremorris-born artist Mary Noonan. Entitled “The Narrow Limitations of Common Sense” and comprising mixed media drawings and sculptural works, according to Mary herself, “This work is a reflection of my research into Irish folklore and superstition relating to ‘fairy-faith’, particularly from the late 19th and early 20th century. It also has a direct relationship to my own upbringing on a farm in Mayo. The materials and processes I use, such as tearing and cutting the paper, become a metaphor for psychological aspects of uncovered narrative. The work is informed by a sense of the uncanny and explores ideas relating to identity, landscape and cultural history.” Mary Noonan has both a BA and MFA in Painting from NCAD. Currently based in Dublin, she has exhibited widely since 2000 including COE Claremorris Open Exhibition (2006, 2007, 2010), RUA Annual Show (2008) RHA Annual Show (2010) and was an invited artist at TULCA 2010. This is Mary's 6th solo exhibition. The exhibition runs until Saturday 27th August.
