S students prepare to return to college, and some may be embarking on the experience for the first time, the last thing they want is to become the victim of a rental scam. In this regard Gardaí are advising people to be wary of such scams. While rental scams occur throughout the year, and are not confined to students, there is a spike due to a new generation of 3rd level students seeking accommodation. The scams may fall into three broad categories; (1) the scammer claims to be out of the country and can’t show you the property and requests a deposit, (2) the scammer is living at the property and shows a number of people around, gets a deposit from several people and disappears with the money; and (3) the transaction appears normal until the renter finds that the keys don’t work and the landlord has disappeared. Therefore, people need to establish that the house exists and is available for rent and the· identity of landlord /agent, and is he/she authorised to rent the property. 1. Ideally only do business with established bon-fide rental agencies. 2. Always meet a prospective landlord in the accommodation to be rented. 3. Ask for identification, a driver’s licence or Photo identification of landlord or letting agent. etc. (Take a photo of the document on your phone) 4. Pay the deposit to the Landlord and not the persons leaving the property or another intermediary. 5. Use cheques or bank drafts to pay the deposit and keep copies of receipts of payments and any correspondence. 6. Ensure keys fit, open door lock and sign rental contract prior to paying a deposit. The Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) rent index provides students with important benchmark information and is an authoritative guide as to the actual rents being charged by landlords adjacent to all Universities, ITs and other Third Level colleges. www.rtb.ie. Beware, also, if the rent sounds too good to be true.

More than 100 people with disabilities on Mayo social housing waiting list Kathleen O’Meara
T
HE Government needs to take urgent action to address new figures which reveal at least 122 people with disabilities are on social housing waiting lists in Co Mayo, according to one of the country’s largest charities.
Rehab, Ireland’s largest independent charity for people with disabilities, says the Government is failing people with disabilities by not providing them with their basic human rights. Access to appropriate social housing remains a major stumbling block for people with disabilities. A lack of availability and choice makes housing a significant issue for the 600,000 people with disabilities living in our communities. Furthermore, more than 3000 people with disabilities are still living in institutions. This figure does not include the 1,200 people under 65, most of whom have disabilities, inappropriately placed in nursing homes. These people housed in inappropriate setting are being deprived of the basic human right to live in the community and play an active role in society. The Government’s delay in taking responsibility for funding of appropriate housing, demonstrates a complete lack of priority for people with disabilities. The organisation, which supports over
20,000 people, has now reiterated its call for the Government to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Ireland is the only country in Europe which has still failed to ratify this vital international agreement, which would afford people with disabilities the same basic human rights as everyone else. Article 19 of the UNCRPD specifically provides for people with disabilities to live independently in their communities. Kathleen O’Meara, Rehab’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs said: “Ireland really needs to get to grips with how we support people with disabilities to live in their own homes. These figures show the Government is failing our most vulnerable members of society. The right to a home is a critical human right outlined in the UNCRPD. “If the convention was ratified, the Government would have to be accountable. These worrying figures show that people with disabilities continue to be treated like second class citizens . . . ” Ms O’Meara added.
Celebrations at Station House Hotel official opening Proprietor Gerry Moran thanked the numerous people who contributed to the successful launch. The hotel, which includes a unique cocktail bar, wonderful facilities for weddings, parties, meetings and a whole range of other events, is a welcome addition to the range of hotel options in Ballina for a growing tourist market. Indeed, “welcoming” is an apt description for this fine hotel, which adds a bright new dimension to Kevin Barry Street, at the entrance to Ballina. Look out for further pictures and details on this hotel and the official opening in the September issue of Mayo Now magazine.

HERE was music, fun and laughter – and a wonderful sense of celebration - at the official opening of Ballina’s newest hotel, the Station House, on Friday, 4th August. For owners, Gerry and Siobhán Moran, it marked the culmination of many months of hard work to create a bright, colourful and professionally-presented new venue at
the main Dublin Road entrance to Ballina. The official launch, performed by local singer/actor Tommy Fleming, was covered by the local Mid-west Radio and the events of the day included fine performances by local musicians and singers, including Pamela Gilmartin and her band, Lady of the Moy Therése Ní Láimhín and, of couse, Tommy himself.

Parents forced to fork out for new books IT’S the perennial problem. Even in the days of computers and a major growth in online learning the bill to families for new books still a remains a problem.A second-hand book shop owner in Sligo says many parents are forced to buy new school books because of updated and new editions required at schools. Catherine Masiacz of the Red Book second-hand store in Sligo says that she has thousands of books that she cannot sell because they are an old edition. She says that parents can save a lot on second hand books that can cost almost €40 new. They also sell second-hand uniforms which she says parents can save significantly on. But speaking to Ocean FM News as people prepare their children for school next month again, she says some parents are disappointed when she tells them she cannot sell old editions. All this means that some parents, who may not have the money, have to borrow for books that are an essential part of a particular course.

Workers Rights Welcome Centre opens in Sligo New ‘Drop in’ centre for information on workplace issues Jack O'Connor, President of SIPTU
A
Workers Rights Welcome Centre, which is open to all workers who wish to ‘drop in’ for information on workplace issues, was launched by SIPTU General President, Jack O’Connor, recently in Sligo. The Centre was opened on July 28 in SIPTU Office, Hanson’s Retail Park, Cleveragh. Workers’ Rights Welcome Centre (WRWC)
project manager, Rachael Ryan, said: “Our staff are committed to providing up-todate confidential and accurate information on workplace issues to workers who visit our centres” “Centres already operate in Dublin, Tralee Navan and Cork where Advocates and Information Assistants already provide advice and representation to workers every
day. In many incidences they have saved the jobs of workers or satisfactorily addressed their grievances.” She added, “Workers in the Sligo/Leitrim/Roscommon area who are suffering unfair treatment at work and who want to talk to someone face to face in a confidential and empathetic setting, will be able to drop in to the Centre, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Workers can also ring the Centre on 071 - 9161841.” The WRWC network is complemented by the Worker Rights Centre website and dedicated helpline number of 1890 747 881. These services are provided by the trade union SIPTU, in solidarity to all workers (members and non-members) who need them. SIPTU Sectoral Organiser, John McCarrick, said: “Many workers are employed in precarious, intolerable and inequitable situations, while others simply want to improve their pay and conditions, this makes it critically important that they organise themselves and join a union.” Head of the WRWC, Tom O’Driscoll, said: “The forerunner to the WRC was established in 2010. The WRC is the single biggest user of the State’s employment rights bodies recovering close to €25 million in compensation for workers.”

P
lans are well underway for the 5th Annual Des Flynn Tractor Run which is scheduled for 20th August this year. In its first year it attracted 128 vehicles and this has grown to just over 300
in 2015 and 2016, making it the biggest Tractor Run in Connacht. Since it’s inauguration in 2013 a total of €19,385.00 has been raised for The Irish Heart Foundation and Castleconnor
Defibrillator Fund. In addition to providing the funds for ongoing training and maintenance of the existing defibrillators in Castleconnor, the funds raised has enabled the purchase of an additional defibrillator in February this year. This defibrillator has been erected in Killanley, just 100 metres from the cemetery. Registration for the Tractor Run takes place on the day from 12 noon - 1.45pm. Registration fee €20.00. The route departs Castleconnor Community Centre and passes Des’s home place in Carragun, on through Main Street Enniscrone and back to the Community Centre via Frankfurt and Castleconnor Church. Route takes approx. 90 minutes. Refreshments, music, face painting and football on the big screen follow in the Community Centre. The family and friends of Des Flynn would like to thank everyone for their continued support. This has been a fantastic community effort and a great day for local families and the farming community. The 5th Annual Des Flynn Tractor Run is expected to generate major interest on Sunday 20th August. Please come out once again and show your support. Any queries to (087) 2450116.

Corballa, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo Ballina Lions Club President Vinny Duffy welcomes An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar on his arrival at Ballina’s Great National Hotel to launch Ballina Lions’ “Message in a Bottle” project.
I
T was his first official visit to Mayo and, in fact, his first official function here. An Taoiseach, Mr. Leo Varadkar officially launched the Ballina Lions Club initiative, “Message in a Bottle”, on Saturday July 29th 2017 at 5pm in the Great National Hotel, Ballina. The project is designed to assist the most vulnerable people in our community, people who are older, living alone, with disabilities, allergies or compromised in any way. It is primarily designed to help the various frontline services – Ambulance, Paramedics, Gardai, Fire Brigade – who come to assist those people in an emergency situation. In the event of an accident or an incident, within the home, the first emergency service on the scene will be alerted to the bottle by a green sticker on the back of the front door. The bottle can then be located by the attending service in the fridge. When opened it will contain all the necessary information concerning the
person needing help – name, DOB, photo, medical card no. (if relevant),medical condition, allergies, pharmacy name, doctor’s name, where medicines are kept – all the necessary information to enable to provide assistance to the person in need. The Scheme is FREE to the public, funded by Ballina Lions Club and you can obtain ONE bottle from your local GP’s surgery, local participating pharmacies, Ballina Lions Club and St. Vincent de Paul, Ballina. The emergency services will locate the bottle in the fridge and use the information inside to ensure treatment is obtained quickly and, possibly, save lives. Local pharmacies where the bottles are currently available are: Patricia Grimes, Enniscrone; in Ballina: Foody’s Pharmacy, Hennigans’ Pharmacy, McLoughlins, Maloney’s Lifestyle, Bunree Road, Garden Street and Crossmolina; Quinn’s, Ballina and Crossmolina. Local district nurses will also be asked to keep a supply.
Rod Tobin (HSE Ambulance Service ) John Mc Cormack, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Senator Michelle Mulherin & Vinny Duffy (Chairperson Ballina Lions Club).
The following local emergency services and organisations attended the launch: St. Vincent de Paul, Order of Malta, Ambulance Service, Fire Brigade, Active 55 Club and Moy Valley Club. Project leader John McCormack thanked all of those who had come in to support the initiative and provided the attendance with a comprehensive outline of how the “Message in a Bottle” system works, the information to be included in the bottle and how it can be located by the emergency services, who will be aware of its presence as soon as they see the green stickers. An Taoiseach, Mr. Varadkar, launching the project, lauded the work of the local Lions in getting the project off the ground. Being a medical doctor himself, he was acutely aware of the need for such a service. In a medical emergency every second counts and decisions have to be taken quickly, so access to the medical history, allergies and the like is vitally important. Too often when a person is brought to a hospital emergency department they may not be conscious or able to provide a medical history. The scheme has the potential to improve outcomes and save lives. He was delighted the Scheme is being supported by so many sections of the community in Ballina, praised the Lions Club for their initiative and their commitment to serve. Ballina Lions President Vinny Duffy, who welcomed and introduced Mr. Varadkar, also introduced Rod Tobin of the HSE National Ambulance Service, who addressed the gathering. He thanked Senator Michelle Mulherin for inviting An Taoiseach to Ballina and complimented project leader John McCormack for his trojan work in getting the project off the ground and seeing it through. Look out for further updates on “Message in a Bottle” in future issues of Mayo Now.

A
gricultural Shows are an important part of cultural life in country towns and villages throughout Ireland and Enniscrone & District Agricultural & Industrial Show is the longest running event in the town, with the first show taking place back in 1940. This year the show moves to a new location, the Sports Complex in Castleconnor, on Saturday, 26th October. Because of the major work involved in running a modern show – exhibiting the animals, equipment, sports and recreation and the requirement to provide lots of affordable family entertainment to attract spectators there was, for a time, some fears for the future of this major event in Enniscrone. After the 2016 show the committee were facing the fact that the show as it was could no longer continue. A fresh approach was needed, with more help to implement ideas. Together with this, the show received correspondence that the Castlefield in Enniscrone would no longer be available to host the show due to plans to build a running track in the field. Fortunately, one of the longest serving committee members, Donie McKeon, was not prepared to give up, having revived the show previously in 1990. Though named Enniscrone & District Show, Donie decided to examine the possibility of moving it to a different location. An approach to members of the Castleconnor community was met with a very favourable response and after many discussions and meetings the decision was made to move the event. Survival of the Show was paramount. Donie is now delighted to be able to announce that the show’s future looks
very bright and will form the foundation for a bigger and better event. For a show like this, which celebrated its silver jubilee in 1964, it would have been heartbreaking for many if it had ceased to continue. There is now such support and enthusiasm for this year’s show, to be held in the Community Centre in Castleconnor and the surrounding fields, that the committee has grown to over 50 people. Everyone is putting their shoulder to the wheel to ensure that it will be a huge success. Chairperson Donie McKeon, together with the Enniscrone Show committee, wish to thank the Castleconnor community for their support. Because of the additional committee members the show can now introduce new events. The anticipation and excitement was palpable at the launch night in Muddy Burns on July 26th. They also wish to say a big thank you to the land owners who have given the fields around the Community Centre to host the 2017 show; this means a great show is in the making. Alongside the schedule of classes for horses, ponies, donkeys, cattle, sheep, sheep dog trials, goats, poultry, dog show and home industry there will be an extensive entertainment programme. Thank, also, to the many sponsors who have come on board to make the event exciting and competitive for all those participating. The line up includes: • Dance with music provided by Mick Flavin, with dance competitions • Storytelling and drama for children • Children’s activity and entertainment area

Maura McKeon adds: “In total Enniscrone & District Show has been running for 57 years. We need to celebrate this. It may have been easier to fold the show but instead the decision was taken to build a more modern, forward-looking event for our community”. Maura McKeon was also one of the original people in 1990 that revived the show in Enniscrone and said: “We are keeping alive what our past generation started and they would be proud. Show day, Saturday the 26th August in Castleconnor, will be a day to meet neighbours and friends, have a cuppa, view the exhibits, enjoy the family entertainment, music and dance and raise a glass to Enniscrone & District Agricultural & Industrial Show. We look forward to seeing you all there”. The Showjumping Section of the Show will be run off at the Ard Chuain Equestrian Centre – Saturday, 2nd Sept 2017.

Michael McGoldrick, John McCusker & John Doyle Thurs 14 Sept, 8pm / €18/9u18s / The Hawkswell John Doyle, John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick first crossed paths as teenagers. A quarter of a century later, the fired-up folk live-wires are set to celebrate their friendship, and musical kinship, with their first studio album, The Wishing Tree. A thrilling trip through traditional, contemporary and original jigs, reels, ballads and more, it sees them branch out musically, while tracing the roots of their tunes and acquaintance. All three musicians have gone on to global acclaim: John Doyle (Dublin – vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandola) is an Irish music linchpin and a founder member of acclaimed group Solas, who has worked with Joan Baez, Linda Thompson and Mary Chapin Carpenter. BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner John McCusker (Glasgow – fiddle, whistles, harmonium) has played with The Battlefield Band, Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan, recorded with Paul Weller, and recently produced albums for Eddi Reader, Heidi Talbot and Kris Drever. Mike McGoldrick (Manchester – flute, whistles, Uileann pipes, bodhran, clarinet, congas) is a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner, founding member of Lúnasa, and current member of Capercaillie, who has worked with Mark Knopfler, Eddi Reader, John Cale. Although they'd bumped into each other over the years, all three really hit it off when they started playing as part of the BBC's annual Transatlantic Sessions in 2007 . “That felt like it was a real coming together of the three of us,” McCusker says. “It's always been really natural to play together, and as pals, it always feels really natural to hang out. That's how the idea of us doing this as a trio came about: after The Transatlantic Sessions, we didn't want the fun and the music to stop. So we said, 'Well, why don't we just keep going?'” And so they did. Doyle, McCusker and McGoldrick have performed as a trio since 2009. They released a live album in 2009, and continue to tour together regularly. “We try and keep it as fresh and exciting as we can,” McCusker says. “Live, we'll often go onstage with no set-list, just to try and keep that energy up, that freshness. It's about flying by the seat of your pants, about playing from the heart, about not over-thinking things. We wanted to approach this album in a similar way.”

Musicians Kyle Hampson, Róisín Croinin and Elisha Leonard who between them play the accordion, flute, tin whistle, bodhran and guitar, will accompany dancers Lisa Lavelle, Shannon Gallagher, Aoife Kelleher and Laura Naughton to the beautiful Udinese region of Blessano, in Northern Italy, close to Venice. Foxford Riverfest - Fun for all the family
Foxford RiverFest 2017 gets underway on Friday 18th August and continues through to Sunday 20th, with what promises to be a great weekend for all the family. The festival is a family oriented event that offers a wide range of activities and entertainment on and around the River Moy. It is a celebration of the river and the beautiful surrounding countryside. There is a packed programme of events on offer, which includes the return of some very popular activities and competitions from
previous years’ festivals, as well as some new events that have been added for 2017. For children, there will be plenty to keep them busy, with seed-bombing, face-painting, storytelling, a fish-making workshop, duck race and more. In addition, there is a lot of knitting and crocheting going on in the hopes of yarn bombing Foxford in time for the festival. There was a great turnout and lots of activity at the last session, so, I'm sure they will succeed in coloring the town in time for the festival.

What is Tantric Massage T
antric massage is a type of massage that uses sexual energy to achieve a higher state of consciousness. Skilled tantra massage therapists, or lovers who study the art, use specific sensual touches such as lightly running fingertips along the entire body to awaken a dormant energy field within the body. When awakened, this energy field is believed to unite lovers in an ecstatic experience and allow trapped physical and mental pain to escape from the body. Choose a professional tantra therapist who has a solid, professional reputation to teach you and your partner the correct way to perform tantra massage on one another to fully experience the benefits of this ancient healing art. When done correctly Tantra can help with premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction in men which can be very common. It can also help with women who have problems achieving orgasms. Theories/Speculation Tantra, from the Sanskrit root word tan, translates to expand, manifest, show or put forth. Tantra massage sets out to unwrinkle blocked energy throughout the body and awaken the Kundalini, a energy that lies in rest at the base of the spine. When the Kundalini rises from its restful state, it spreads out along the spine and precipitates healing throughout the body. Methodology No two tantra massages are alike. The goal of the tantra massage therapist is to awaken the seven chakras, or energy centers, along the spine of the body in an effort to nudge the sleeping Kundalini from its rest. The tantra massage therapist may begin the session with relaxation methods and move along into centralized chakra energy building techniques, then accelerate into personalized Kundalini arousal techniques.
Benefits 8 Reasons Why Everyone Should Experience a Tantric Massage The art of Tantra has been practiced for over 9,000 years. It’s origins have been traced back to the Himalayan Mountains in India, where religious leaders believed that ritual was the path to a higher form of ecstasy and liberation. Today’s tantric massage takes the teachings of Tantra and translates them into a full-body experience. A traditional massage is heightened by incorporating breathing exercises and genital stimulation. The tantric massage is a must for anyone looking for complete mind and body relaxation, with the added benefit . Here are eight reasons why every man should book a tantric massage the next time he visits the parlour. 1. Relax Your Body A tantric massage relaxes much more than just your aching back and shoulders. Every part of your body is meticulously cared for, not one area being ignored. Many first timers are surprised that they can remain so relaxed while getting aroused at the same time, but tantric massage seeks to satisfy and relax your entire being at once.
2. Improve Your Breathing Tantric massage incorporates many breathing techniques that have been proven effective for centuries. The breathing methods you will use during your massage will help to enhance the overall experience and moreover teach you how to use breathing to control your natural bodily responses. 3. Emotional Healing Tantric is first and foremost aimed at your emotional well-being. While there are wonderful physical attributes, you can expect even greater results emotionally. As you learn to receive pleasure, self-esteem and self-worth are heightened, leading to a better overall happiness. 4. Experience Pleasure Pleasure comes in many forms during the tantric massage. You will have pleasure from your muscles relaxing, pleasure from the spiritual balance it brings and pleasure from your energy being replenished and fulfilled. Most of the time the arousal experienced
during the massage, which is welcomed but not the overall goal. 5. Become Self-Aware There is no better way to become aware of your very self than by giving up complete control in every aspect to another person. A tantric massage requires you to abandon inhibitions and insecurities and lay them at the hands of the masseuse. As every part of your body is given complete attention, you will get to know yourself in new ways and discover parts of your inner-being that you weren’t previously aware of. 6. Better Health The tantric massage will improve your circulation, emotional wellbeing, and decrease your stress levels. All of these things will leave you in better health, with an improved physical and emotional outlook going forward. 7. Curb Impulses The breathing techniques that you acquire during a tantric massage will help you to control your most natural human impulses. Many find that issues they once had, such as are significantly helped once they learn how to refocus their minds and enjoy
pleasure in the present moment rather than as a means to an end. 8. Fight Stress Any massage will help those dealing with stress, but the tantric massage takes it one step further than simply relaxing your body. Since tantric focuses on your emotional, physical, spiritual and sexual health all at once, you will leave with a renewed sense of self and lowered stress as a result of it. If you are considering a tantric massage, the benefits are
obviously much more than simply helping pain or stiffness in your body. You may have never experienced a prolonged feeling of arousal, but the end result will likely be more powerful than you ever could have imagined. Full Body Tantric Lingam or Yoni Massage with 4-Handed Massage being an option as are Men and Women Masseuses Give yourself the gift of unsurpassed pleasure and book your tantric massage today with Love Dakinibelle 0866053298

C
hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea
of what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private
Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee, Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on
your abroad location as there are some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been
issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

Taking the Stress Out of College Meeting Roommates & Making Friends In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommate aren't much alike. A different perspective on things may be helpful. In fact, it's probably wise not to expect that you'll be best friends with your roommate to avoid disappointment. Katie came to college expecting to be best buddies with her roomies. But over time it felt like the two of them made her the third wheel. With a switch in roommates and a change in attitude about what to expect, she ended up having a blast. Not everyone can switch roommates, though. That's why it helps to start with the idea that you'll respect your differences no matter what. If you and your roomie don't get along, it can help to find someone you do feel understands you — which should be easy on a campus with plenty of people. Giving new students an opportunity to meet is one idea behind freshman orientation. And many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests as you. You'll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm. If you're really having roommate or friendship troubles, make a stop at the school counseling centre. All colleges and universities have one, and first-year fears are something the counselors know well. The counselors will either talk to you one-on-one or if there is a peer group for students who are feeling like you, you can choose to join it. Talking to others who are in the same situation can be comforting. Some students turn to alcohol, heavy partying, excessive sleeping, smoking, or drugs to deal with their first-year problems. Unfortunately, students who resort to getting wasted all the time to cope with their new situation often find that too much partying
brings lots more problems, like interfering with their ability to keep up with assignments, papers, and exams. In the worst case, it may mean getting in trouble with the college judicial department.
Staying Healthy Away From Home Sore throats, sprained ankles, and wisdom teeth that act up are as common among college students as homesickness. It's very easy, especially in a dorm environment, to catch bugs like the flu. People come in and out of your room all the time, and some of those who are sick may pass it on. And who has time to go home to the doctor when they get sick? With this in mind, universities have created health centers staffed with doctors, nurses, dentists — even nutritionists and counselors — ready to tend to your needs. Check out your student orientation packet or your school's website to find out more information about the health
Prevention Tips It's great to be prepared if you get sick, but better yet, how can you prevent getting sick in the first place? The usual measures, like washing your hands frequently, also apply at college. But you'll also have to think about community bathrooms, shared computer terminals, and cramped living quarters, all of which make germs way too happy. If you spend time in the school computer labs, it's a good idea to carry some antibacterial hand lotion in your backpack. When your roommate gets sick, use a germ-fighting solvent to occasionally wipe down shared things like doorknobs, telephone receivers, and remote controls. And don't underestimate the power of eating well and getting a good night's sleep. As always, the best defense is a good offense.

Detox your Liver
T
he liver is one of the most important organs that help the natural detoxification process within the body. Human bodies need healthy livers to fight against the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing the immune system and is an important part of digestion. The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glucose by the body in times of need. It can store quantities of glycogen enough for up to 24 hours.
The liver is one of the natural detoxifying agents of the body. The human body is exposed to toxins every day. Hormones influencing physical and mental wellbeing are activated in the liver. The liver further breaks them down into water-soluble substances and they are passed out through stool and urine. Excessive storage of toxins in the body hampers the natural processes of the liver. Some of the most common symptoms are a chronic fatigue, headaches, and a diminished bile flow. Impaired liver functions can cause viral infections of the liver and alcohol induced fatty deposits.
Mon-Thu 9.00 - 6.00pm Fri 9.00 - 5pm Home and hospital visits catered for Garden/Tone St, Ballina Tel: 096-72189 087-6389500 email: begley.john2@gmail.com
The best time for a liver detox is spring. The warm weather is the perfect time for a diet full of filtered water, raw fruits and vegetables. A liver flush is one of the most simple and popular types of cleansing techniques. It is used for the elimination of excess fatty acids and other toxic substances from the liver. The liver flush can be described as a regimen of light exercise supported with an intake of herbal teas and the liver flush mixture. The liver flush mixture is a mixture of freshly squeezed citrus and lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a small amount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon of olive oil. A natural food diet has to be consumed for the rest of the day. This regimen should be taken for at least ten days. The liver cleansing formula should be taken for at least two weeks. Milk thistle is a natural herb that has been known to have strengthening and healing powers over the liver. It is an antioxidant and can protect the liver from radical damage. The herb is available in tablet form and in major natural foods stores. Milk thistle can be consumed after performing the liver flush. Detox provides detailed information on Detox, Detox Diet, Drug Detox, Alcohol Detox and more. Detox is affliated with Drug Detoxification.
