Strawberry stalls are “unfair and dangerous” W

Protester feels the pain

E’VE all noticed them, from time to time, particularly close to major towns – the strawberry stalls, often in dangerous locations and usually manned by young teenagers. Then we see vehicles pulling in abruptly, double parking, people throwing open cars doors with mobile phones stuck to their necks.

The traders concerned are allowed to operate at particular times of the year, without having need for a permit or the requirement to pay a licence fee to anyone.

This issue was raised by Independent Councillor Mary Kelly at this month’s meeting of Ballina Town Council when she claimed the roadside stalls are unfair and potentially dangerous. She sought clarification from council management as to why this practice is allowed, while anyone trading at the Farmers’ Market pays a fee to the local authority, or those trading in the Market Square pay a fee for a trading permit.

Speaking to North West Express Councillor Kelly said: “These are national roads, not market places.

Not long ago Mayo Co. Council banned the advertising of cars for sale because of the obvious danger to people trying to read the contact details”.

A

gigantic Shell Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which left Dublin docks on Sunday en route to Mayo was stranded in Glenamoy on Tuesday night, to the extent that Mayo Co. Council was considering the construction of a temporary road for motorists.

One lady told North West Express she had to travel to Crossmolina in order to get to her place of employment in Belmullet Shell had brought the TBM on a 320km journey to Rossport to bore a

4.2m tunnel through Sruwaddacon estuary. The convoy, under heavy Garda escort, travelled through Sligo, enduring protests in Sligo town, Ballina and Bellacorick, where there were some reported incidents between Gardai and Shell to Sea protesters. Traffic chaos was reported in Ballina at 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington said: "This tunnel boring machine means the rape of the environment and the rape of our natural resources. That Shell is using armed

protection from the state means we live in a banana republic. Where you have occupation you have resistance."

News of the TBM's arrival in Dublin Port leaked resulting in a 90-minute delay as protesters descended on the port in an effort to stop the 160 ton unit on its passage to Mayo. The significant Garda security operation then swung into operation, to question the protesters. Traffic chaos ensued at Ballisodare and the main Dublin-Sligo dual carriageway was closed for a time to facilitate the move.

Strawberry stalls “unfair and dangerous” Continued from front page In 2004 Mary Harney deemed these vendors exempt from the Casual Trading Act, 1999, whereby they would need a licence. The period of exemption is from May 1st to September 30th and is restricted to growers, their agents or servants.

Councillor Kelly said that subsequent to the meeting she learned about the exemption. However, there are items that don’t fall under the exemption, such as jams and juices which most of them are selling regardless.

“Also, they are not allowed to erect signage and all of them have signs placed heralding their stalls and beside their stalls”.

“I am aware of several business people who have had signs removed from the roadside. The most important issue is safety. Cars sometimes pull in suddenly onto the hard shoulder, giving little or no warning, when they see

the stall, and exit later when cars are travelling at speeds of 100 km per hour. To me it is just an accident waiting to happen”.

A Sligo businessman also told this paper that there seems to no consistency when it comes to rules on signage on the roadsides. A lot of business people had to remove signage similar to that used by the strawberry sellers.

Many have been fined for placing such signs on the roads. “I pay over €14,000 per year in rates and have been prosecuted for advertising my business while these guys seem to be getting away with it”, he said.

Councillor Kelly was disappointed that nobody from the RSA had contacted her or commented after she raised the matter at the Town Council meeting. In a statement to North West Express, Brian Farrell of the RSA said: “The most recent edition of the Rules of the Road (Revision No. 2 – March 2010) at page 116 visits the sub-

ject of ‘No Parking’. It lists the circumstances in which you must not park. For example, it stipulates ‘You must not park in any way which interferes with the normal flow of traffic, or which obstructs or endangers other road users’.

“In any circumstance where someone is concerned for the safety of any road user, they should contact their local Gardai whose duty it is to investigate such matters and enforce the law as it applies to the prevailing situation.”

The fruits and vegetables covered by the exemption are: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries, blackberries, tayberries, currants and potatoes having loose skins and which have been harvested prior to maturity.

With the continuing increase in traffic levels close to major towns and the emphasis placed on road safety at all levels, this is a matter which is expected to gain further attention.

Judge Devins sparks controversy over “Social Welfare” remark DISTRICT Court Judge Mary Devins is receiving criticism, particularly from the social media, following her reported remarks at a court hearing on Friday last when she referred to “social welfare” as being a suitable Polish charity to which a defendant should donate €1,000.

Judge Devins made her remarks at Castlebar District Court after hearing evidence in an adjourned case, where the defendant had appeared previously before Judge Gibbons on a public order charge.

In the previous hearing Judge Gibbons had a problem with the “quasi-racist comments” of the defendant and

had adjourned the case to the Friday sitting, ordering him to pay €1,000 to a suitable Polish charity in lieu of a conviction and fine.

But Judge Devins said she was somewhat baffled by the suggestion of a Polish charity and that time was given to decide if there was a suitable one.

“There is, it’s called social welfare”, she said.

The Polish Chaplaincy was suggested. But Judge Devins said she would prefer a local charity and adjourned the case to the District Court on August 1st, before Judge Gibbons.

N5 Longford bypass opens to traffic on Friday THERE'S good news for motorists heading to the West, or, indeed, those heading eastwards from the West this bank holiday weekend with confirmation that the N5 bypass of Longford Town will open on this Friday, 3rd August.

It's the end of heavy trucks causing traffic congestion in Longford town as Longford County Council has confirmed the unofficial opening will take place after 16 months of construction and 2 months ahead of schedule.

The new 2.6 kilometre single carraigeway route will cut the average journey times for people travelling to the West by around 25 minutes at peak times.

It will also remove up to 5000 vehicles per day from the town centre - something the Mayor of the Count Sean Farrell is welcoming saying it will benefit not only businesses but the whole community.

Mayor Farrell also commended the contractors, Wills Bros Ltd., as well as the County Manager, the National Roads Authority and everyone who worked on the project.

Family of Creggs accident victim seeks answers before being diverted to the main trauma hospital for the region, UCHG. Ms Curley was just 15 minutes away from Roscommon County Hospital when the accident occurred. However. the closure of the A&E facility there meant she had to go to Galway, having been directed from Portiuncla Hospital in Ballinasloe because of her injuries.

The issue was raised in the Seanad last week by Roscommon Senator Terry Leyden, who said that Ms Curley was the victim of Government policies.

“She is the first real, declared tragedy of the decision by the Government of Deputies James Reilly and Enda Kenny, who gave commitments and promises to the people of Roscommon that the Accident and Emergency Department at Roscommon County Hospital would be retained.

HE efforts of the Roscommon Hospital Action Committee to keep their cause to the forefront has been boosted by the efforts of the family of the Creggs teenager who died on the road to Galway Hospital last November after being seriously injured in a car crash only a few miles from Roscommon Hospital.

The heart-broken family of Elaine Curley are demanding answers from An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, and Health Minister James Reilly after she died on the two-hour journey from the scene of a car crash to University College Hospital Galway, a journey that should have taken approximately an hour and 20 minutes.

Tragically, Elaine died in the ambulance 13 minutes before it arrived at the hospital in Galway last November.

“The family want to meet with either

Enda Kenny or Dr James Reilly to get an explanation as to why this new system, which resulted in their daughter being in an ambulance for more than two hours, is preferable to having a A&E at Roscommon County Hospital open. They do not want something like this to happen to any other family and must be commended for their bravery in speaking out,” John McDermott of the Roscommon Hospital Action Committee said last week.

“Creggs is only few miles from Roscommon Hospital, but because of the closure of the A&E last July, Elaine had to be brought to UCHG. The delay in getting Ms Curley to hospital occurred when the ambulance crew initially took an indirect route through a bogland road. They then brought the seriously ill patient to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe

Ashwoods Golf Centre under new Management

ow under new management, Ashwoods Golf Centre, situated on the Sligo Road a mile from Enniskillen town offers a range of facilities to golfers of all abilities.

Perry under fire after court settlement

ligo F.G. Deputy and Junior Minister for Small Business, John Perry, has refused to comment further following a court settlement over his alleged failure to pay a €1.3 million debt owed to a Galway widow relating to the lease of a hotel.

According to the national media John Perry is the second govern-

ment minister to face court action over a disputed debt.

Mrs. Hilary Burke, from Kinvara, Co Galway, sued Mr Perry and his wife, Marie Perry, last year as the personal representative of her late husband Padraic Burke, who died in 2010. It is understood the dispute related to a leasing agreement in respect of the Coach

House Hotel in Ballymote, Co Sligo.

The case came before the Master of the High Court, Ed Houlihan where the parties settled the action before it was assigned for hearing by a High Court judge.

Master Honohan did not read the terms of the settlement to the court and both legal teams refused to discuss the terms of the deal afterwards.

Mr. Perry said the court case had no relevance to his role as a TD and minister.

"The proceedings involving John Perry, TD, which were settled today, relate to a private commercial matter. They have no bearing or relevance whatsoever to his role or function as a public representative or minister of state. Accordingly, Deputy Perry will be making no further comment on the matter," his office said in a statement.

Mr. Perry also declined to respond to a question from the media about whether the Taoiseach is aware of the court action. The Sligo-North Leitrim TD is known to be a loyal supporter and friend of Mr Kenny. During the infamous Fine Gael heave, he was rock solid behind the party leader.

The Ballymote man topped the poll in the last general election and is now a TD for 15 years.

His appeal as a candidate came from his involvement in local business and a variety of community

organisations, including Sligo's first Community Enterprise Board and he was named Sligo Person of the Year in 1993. Mr Perry has run a number of businesses in Ballymote.

He is also noted for his friendship with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg whom he got to travel to Sligo in 2006 to dedicate a monument in Ballymote to New York's "Fighting 69th", the famed largely-Irish regiment from the American Civil War, and its most famous commander, Michael Corcoran, who was born in the area.

Galway’s Shopping Centre roundabout to go next month

Bluebird brings some good jobs news THERE’S good news on the jobs front this week with 75 jobs planned for counties Sligo and Mayo.

Home care provider Bluebird Care has launched a recruitment drive for care staff and specialist nursing roles following their recent appointment as an HSE approved provider for homecare packages.

The positions will come on stream over the next six months and will be open to care workers, live-in care workers and support workers throughout Co. Sligo and Co. Mayo.

NAMA to install security in Roscommon's Loughglynn House LAST week NAMA announced that it was recording a profit for the previous year. The National Assets Management Agency also announced that they are to install a security system as Loughglynn Convent in Roscommon.

The announcement comes as concerns were voiced by local Sinn Fein councillor Michael Mulligan over the dilapidated state of the listed building which was being targeted by thieves and vandals.

IT is one of the most difficult roundabouts in the West to negotiate. However, this will all change in August when work to remove the Galway Shopping Centre Roundabout will commence with Clare Civil Engineering the contractors lined up for a project, estimated to cost in the region of €2 million.

City Council Director of Services, Ciarán Hayes, said that the project was now set to start in August – ‘after the Races’ – and scheduled for completion by November.

Motorists can expect some traffic disruption through the construction period but most of the ‘heavy work’ will be take place during the nighttime period. Work on the Shopping Centre (Bodkin) Roundabout had been scheduled to have been completed earlier this year before the staging of the Volvo Ocean Race event, but had to be deferred when the ‘preferred bidder’ withdrew.

AIB customers and staff were left reeling last with the news that nine of the bank’s branches in Connacht are to close The changes were announced as part of the bank’s half year results.

In addition, AIB has announced it's raising its standard variable mortgage interest rate by half of one per cent.

For owner-occupiers, the rate will now be three-point-five per cent.

Four branches will close in Mayo: Ballyhaunis, Belmullet, Charlestown and Kiltimagh. In Sligo the Collooney branch will close. In Roscommon the Boyle and Ballaghaderreen branches will close, while in Galway Carraroe and Portumna branches will close.

In total across the country 45 sub offices will close and six branch amalgamations will take place from October.

There will be a further 16 branch closures next year.

Call for conservation plan for Croagh Patrick IN the aftermath of another successful Reek Sunday, in which crowds in the region of 15,000 scaled Mayo’s holy mountain, thoughts turn to the serious concerns expressed last week by a local priest about the overuse of Croagh Patrick.

The concern was revealed last week by the administrator of the Westport Parish, Father Charlie McDonnell, who has serious misgivings with the use of Croagh Patrick by all sorts of groups and “there is now a huge problem with it”. “We are custodians of Croagh Patrick for future generations and I must say there is an element of recklessness in its present use,” he said. “But this is not about ap-

portioning blame, the various partners need to sit down – and that has already started – and make a plan for its future conservation and sustainability.”

Father McDonell said the group must up-the-ante and, for example, prioritise signage and safety regulations, as well as compel climbers to be responsible for their own rubbish.

“I think everyone who uses the mountain needs to respect its Christian and pre-Christian heritage. If you look at old photographs from the 1950s, there is one clear path going up the mountain, from the Taobh na Cruaiche side, now it looks like a hodgepodge of many different paths,”

Father McDonnell said.

He noted that more erosion has occurred in the last 50 years – ‘and some would even say in the last six or seven years’ – than over all the previous centuries. There had been speculation in recent weeks of a helicopter landing pad being constructed on Croagh Patrick, and it is understood that these discussions have involved An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. However, the plans are at an early stage as other stakeholders, who are involved in devising a sustainability plan for the mountain are not prepared to make a public comment on this. However, there are general concerns about the issue of safety on the holy mountain.

he O’Carolan Harp and Traditional Music Festival and Summer School, Keadue Co. Roscommon has established itself over the years as one of Ireland’s leading musical events.

The 2012 Festival which is held under the auspices of Comhaltas Ceoltori Eireann and in memory of the great harper and composer Turlough O’Carolan who is buried in Kilronan Cemetery will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend from August 3rd – August 6th.

A Summer School in Traditional Irish Music, Song, Set Dancing and Sean Nos Dancing took place this week before the Festival from July 30th. To Aug 3rd.

Free Pre-School Year Guide for Parents to the free Pre-Schol Year in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) What is the free Pre-School Year in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)?

The ECCE is a new scheme designed to give children access to a free Pre-School Year of appropriate programme-based activities in the year before they start primary school.

Participation in a pre-school programme provides children with their first formal experience of early learning, the starting-point of their educational and social development outside the home. Children who avail of preschool are more likely to be ready for school and a formal learning and social environment.

Will my child be eligible?

The ECCE is open to all children aged between 3 years 3 months and 4 years 6 months on 1 September each year. To avail of the free preschool year in January 2010, children must have been born between 2 February 2005 and 30 June 2006. To avail of the year in September 2010, children must have been born between 2 February 2006 and 30 June 2007.

How is the pre-school year funded?

Services participating in the scheme will be paid a capitation fee for each qualifying child enrolled.

In return, the service will be required to provide an appropriate programme of activities in early childhood care and education (ECCE) which will be free to parents. While the pre-school year will normally commence in September of each year, a shorter period will apply for those attending from January 2010.

How will the pre-school year be provided?

Children attending a full or part-time service will normally receive pre-school year sessions for 2 hours 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week over 50 weeks. To facilitate parents whose children attend a full or part-time service for only 3 days a week, the service may provide 3 weekly sessions of 3 hours 45 minutes each day. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be €48.50. Children availing of the free pre-school year during January to August 2010 will receive 35 rather than 50 weeks of free pre-school.

Children attending a sessional playschool service, typically provided for about 3 hours each day, will normally receive pre-school year sessions for

3 hours a day, 5 days a week over 38 weeks.

Sessional playschool services which are unable to open 5 days a week, can apply to provide the pre-school year in the form of 3 hours 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week over 41 weeks. Children availing of the free pre-school year during January to August 2010 will receive 23 rather than 38 weeks of free pre-school. The weekly capitation fee in these cases will be €64.50.

Some sessional playschools may choose to open for 50 weeks in the year rather than 38, in which case they will provide daily sessions of 2 hours 15 minutes, and full or part-time services may choose to also provide sessional playschool services in which case the 38 week model will apply.

Will parents have to pay additional charges to the service for the free Pre-School Year?

No, services which participate in the scheme must provide the pre-school year free to parents. A service may charge parents for additional services as long as (a) these are provided on an optional basis and (b) appropriate programme based activities are provided to children not participating in an optional activity.

Dealing with indigestion

I

NDIGESTION, also known as dyspepsia, is a term used to describe one or more symptoms including a feeling of fullness during a meal, uncomfortable fullness after a meal, and burning or pain in the upper abdomen. Indigestion can be caused by a condition in the digestive tract such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, cancer, or abnormality of the pancreas or bile ducts.

If the condition improves or resolves, the symptoms of indigestion usually improve.

Sometimes a person has indigestion for which a cause cannot be found. This type of indigestion, called functional dyspepsia, is thought to occur in the area where the stomach meets the small intestine. The indigestion may be related to abnormal motility—the squeezing or relaxing action—of the stomach muscle as it receives, digests, and moves food into the small intestine.

Most people with indigestion experience more than one of the following symptoms: * Fullness during a meal. The person feels overly full soon after the meal starts and cannot finish the meal. * Bothersome fullness after a meal. The person feels overly full after a meal—it may feel like the food is staying in the stomach too long. * Epigastric pain. The epigastric area is between the lower end of the chest bone and the navel. The person may experience epigastric pain ranging from mild to severe. * Epigastric burning. The person feels an unpleasant sensation of heat in the epigastric area.

Other, less frequent symptoms that may occur with indigestion are nausea and bloating—an unpleasant tightness in the stomach. Nausea and bloating could be due to causes other than indigestion.

How is indigestion diagnosed?

To diagnose indigestion, the doctor asks about the person’s current symptoms and medical history and performs a physical examination. The doctor may order x rays of the stomach and small intestine. The doctor may perform blood, breath, or stool tests if the type of bacteria that causes peptic ulcer disease is suspected as the cause of indigestion.

The doctor may perform an upper endoscopy.

After giving a sedative to help the person become drowsy, the doctor passes an endoscope—a long, thin tube that has a light and small camera on the end—through the mouth and gently guides it down the esophagus into the stomach. The doctor can look at the esophagus and stomach with the endoscope to check for any abnormalities. The doctor may perform biopsies—removing small pieces of tissue for examination with a microscope— to look for possible damage from GERD or an infection.

How is indigestion treated?

Some people may experience relief from symptoms of indigestion by * eating several small, low-fat meals throughout the day at a slow pace * refraining from smoking * abstaining from consuming coffee, carbonated beverages, and alcohol * stopping use of medications that may irritate the stomach lining—such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs * getting enough rest * finding ways to decrease emotional and physical stress, such as relaxation therapy or yoga The doctor may recommend over-the-counter antacids or medications that reduce

acid production or help the stomach move food more quickly into the small intestine.

Many of these medications can be purchased without a prescription. Nonprescription medications should only be used at the dose and for the length of time recommended on the label unless advised differently by a doctor. Informing the doctor when starting a new medication is important.

Antacids, such as Alka-Seltzer, Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids, and Riopan, are usually the first drugs recommended to relieve symptoms of indigestion. Many brands on the market use different combinations of three basic salts— magnesium, calcium, and aluminum—with hydroxide or bicarbonate ions to neutralize the acid in the stomach. Antacids, however, can have side effects. Magnesium salt can lead to diarrhea, and aluminum salt may cause constipation. Aluminum and magnesium salts are often combined in a single product to balance these effects.

Indigestion makes you feel tired and ill. It is hard to do anything if you are suffering from indigestion. Indigestion's can make getting through the day a challenge. Indigestion is uncomfortable and inconvenient for you and everyone around you. If you have indigestion there are some natural methods you can try to relive the indigestion.

Herbal tea If you like tea you can try some herbal tea for indigestion. One such herbal tea in mint tea, it is easy to make and has a pleasant smell and taste. Mint tea can relieve you of indigestion and discomfort of the stomach. If you want to make mint tea just add a tablespoon of dried mint to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for ten minutes. Then strain out the mint from

the water and you have mint tea left in the cup. You can drink mint tea several times a day for relief of indigestion.

Soda Drinking a soda can help you feel better if you are having indigestion. Cola is a known cure for indigestion but some people prefer a white soda to combat their indigestion because it is milder then cola is. Baking soda can help you feel better if you have indigestion. You can take half a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of lemon juice in a half cup of warm water. Drink it slowly and see if it helps you feel better. If you are vomiting with your indigestion leave out the lemon juice.

Gentian This extremely bitter herb is used to improve digestion, relieve flatulence, and stimulate the gallbladder and liver. It is also a powerful antioxidant. By stimulating the action of the stomach, many symptoms associated with a weak digestion such as gas, indigestion, and poor appetite are relieved. Improving stomach secretions helps to increase the absorption of nutrients. Gentian aids the absorption of a wide range of nutrients, including iron and vitamin B12, and is therefore useful for iron-deficiency anemia.The herb also acts as a stimulant on the gallbladder and liver, encouraging them to function more efficiently.

Gentian is useful in almost any condition where the digestive system needs toning. Use with extreme care if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure.

Garlic If you have an intestinal infection you can try to have garlic. Garlic is an old and much used aid for a wide variety of intestinal disorders.

Garlic can stimulate digestion. If you feel garlic may be good for what is ailing you try to add a clove or two of garlic to your cooking.

Garlic can help minor upset stomach.

Cinnamon Cinnamon warms and stimulates the digestive system, useful in weak digestion, colic, griping, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, wind and distention. Good Oral Health They will usually just go away on their own.

Unfortunately there is no known way of stopping them from recurring.

Abscess An abscess is a collection of pus (infected fluid) surrounded by a thick wall. Abscesses can occur in almost any part of the body.

‘Boils’ are abscesses in the skin. Soft tissue abscesses occur in the tissue just beneath the skin. Abscesses can also occur in the abdomen, liver, brain, anus, rectum, kidney, lung, tonsils, ovaries, heart, pharynx, spleen, vagina and mouth.

Occasionally, infection may spread from an abscess to surrounding tissues.

A tooth abscess is usually a result of dental decay. As the bacteria multiply in the skin or soft tissues, the body responds by forming a wall around the area to keep the bacteria from spreading. The bacteria in this pocket (abscess) continue to multiply, the middle of the abscess turns to liquid and the area becomes more swollen and painful.

Symptoms include swelling, redness, tenderness, fever and shivers. A tooth abscess usually causes severe toothache. This may be a sharp or throbbing pain that gets worse on chewing. There may also be a bitter taste in the mouth and bad breath. Abscesses in other parts of the body such as the liver or brain are less obvious because they are not visible. However, there may be pain in the affected area, accompanied by fever, sweats, chills and general aches and pains.

Abscesses in the brain or spinal cord can cause drowsiness or confusion and require urgent medical attention.

Mouth Ulcers For most people, mouth ulcers are a minor problem that needs minimal treatment. For some, the pain of ulcers can be very severe and difficult to control. Mouth ulcers are usually caused by damage from food, teeth or dentures, or are sometimes due to infections.

Most will heal within a week or two but ill-fitting dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. After removing the cause these ulcers are best treated with an antiseptic mouthwash such as chlorhexidine (Corsodyl).

Treatment The treatment of mouth ulcers depends on their type and cause. Many over-the-counter preparations sold for treating mouth ulcers

may irritate the lining of the mouth. They may reduce the pain of the ulcer but may make it last longer.

Chlorhexidine mouthwash is safe and fairly effective. It is used for one minute, twice daily.

It is important to brush your teeth before using chlorhexidine, as it will stain the plaque on teeth. It is advisable to use chlorhexidine at least half an hour after using toothpaste since the foaming agents in most toothpastes stop chlorhexidine from working. It is also important not to swallow the mouthwash after rinsing. For best results, avoiding rinsing the mouth, or drinking, for 10 minutes after using chlorhexidine. Mouth ulcers may take up to two weeks to fully disappear. The most painful phase usually ends after three or four days.

What is the treatment for an abscess?

Antibiotics do not work because they cannot penetrate the abscess wall. However, they may sometimes be used if the infection has spread. An abscess is treated by a surgical procedure called Incision and Drainage. This is a minor surgical operation where the abscess is cut open and the pus allowed to drain out. For abscesses in other areas such as the liver, lung or brain, complicated surgical drainage procedures may be necessary.

Prevention: Washing your skin at least once a day with water and soap.

Google set to challenge Kindle Fire

GOOGLE will sell a small tablet computer bearing its brand in a challenge to Amazon's Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, the online store that sells films, music, books, apps and other content - the things Amazon also sells for its tablet computer.

Both tablets have screens that measure seven inches diagonally, smaller than the nearly 10 inches on Apple's popular iPad. The Nexus 7 will also be light - at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound. The iPad weighs 1.44 pounds.

The Nexus 7 will ship in mid-July starting at 199 dollars (£128) - the same price as the Kindle Fire. By contrast, iPads start at 499 dollars (£320). Customers can start ordering it through Google today, initially in the United States, Canada and Australia.

The Nexus 7 has more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera. It will run the next version of Google's Android operating system, called Jelly Bean.

Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q. It sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device", will be available in July in the US initially and sell for 299 dollars (£192).

Google made the announcements during a keynote speech to open its annual conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Google also demonstrated its futuristic, Internet-connected glasses by having parachutists jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above San Francisco. The audience got live video feeds from their glasses as they descended to land on the roof of the Moscone Centre, the location of the conference.

Google is making prototypes of the device, known as Project Glass, available to test. They can only be purchased - for 1,500 dollars (£963) - at the conference this week, for delivery early next year.

Google is also giving all 6,000 delegates a Nexus 7, Nexus Q and Google Nexus phone for free.

The internet porn industry is worth an estimated £3 billion a year but campaigners have argued it is too easy for children to access explicit adult content.

Children's minister Tim Loughton said the internet industry needed to raise its game to help families control what their children saw online.

It comes as more than 100,000 people signed-up to a Safetynet campaign calling for the Government to introduce legislation to ensure internet service providers filtered pornography at source.

"We have always been clear we would turn up the heat on industry if it did not make fast enough progress," Mr Loughton said.

But bringing in an automatic filter risks "lulling parents into a false sense of security", he

warned. "There is no silver bullet to solve this. No filter can ever be 100% foolproof. There can never be any substitute for parents taking responsibility for how, when and where their children use the internet. The answer lies in finding ways to combine technical solutions with better education, information and, if necessary regulation further down the line."

The 10-week consultation will ask parents and businesses for their views on the best way to shield children from internet pornography and other potentially harmful sites, such as those which promote suicide, anorexia, gambling, self-harm and violence.

Views on preventing online sexual grooming and cyber-bullying will also be sought, the Department for Education (DfE) said.

Nick Pickles, director of the Big Brother Watch campaign group, said: "The consultation appears

to rule out a UK-wide filter, something that we have campaigned against as Government should not have the ability to control what we can see online.

Parents do need more help installing and using online safety tools, but using them and what to prevent access to are decisions for parents."

Google map helps in dog owner case A TAIWANESE judge has used a Google map showing an unleashed dog to hold a man responsible for his neighbour's bicycle accident.

A defendant surnamed Lee denied being the dog's owner and causing injury through negligence.

The victim, surnamed Peng, testified that he became scared after the dog began pursuing him while he was riding his bicycle last July. He said he fell off the bike and injured his forehead.

Judge Song Kuo-chen said that a two-year-old Google Street View picture showed the dog standing in Lee's yard which meant that Lee was its owner. Police had earlier said there were no other dogs in the rural neighbourhood in Miaoli County, south of Taipei, where Lee and the victim live.

The judge fined Lee 59,000 Taiwan dollars (£1,267)

Couples compete in Wife Carrying World Championships

German mayor designates 'more challenging' parking spaces to men

Couples from across the globe went head-to-head at the annual Wife Carrying World Championships in Finland.

T

aking on a 250 metre assault course, 34 teams headed to the Finnish outpost of Sonkajarvi to take part in the event, attended by an estimated 8,000 spectators.

Loving husbands travelled from countries including Australia, Russia and Estonia, to lend some much-needed support to their partners throughout the day.

Darth Vader and a team of smurfs were just some of the fancy dress costumes on display, as contestants navigated their way through neckdeep pools of water and obstacle-filled sand pits.

This year's championship was won by Finnish lawyer, Taisto Miettinen and his wife Kristiina Haapanen, who completed the course in one minute and 22 seconds.

Four-time World Champion Miettinen explained the secret of his success, saying: 'In last autumn, I started running in the track, one hundred, two hundred and four hundred meters.

'I think that it helps that I am now a little bit faster than last year.'

The first wife carrying competition was held in the Sonkajarvi in1992, becoming the official world championships three years later.

This year's event was accompanied by a pageant to celebrate the village's 90th anniversary.

The event forms part of several unorthodox summer events held in Finland, including swamp football, cell phone throwing and sauna sitting.

Emily said: 'Hannah and I thought of the idea together and it suddenly became reality when mum liked it too. 'We wanted to do something different and I really loved Barbies when I was little.' Emily's mother Christine spent ÂŁ250 on materials and worked for two days creating the 6ft x 2ft boxes. She made them from wooden batons, adding hand-painted flowers and fairy lights decoration. On the night of the party they were loaded onto a trailer, with the girls taking their place inside and took a tour of the local area before making their grand entrance. Christine was not completely satisfied with her handiwork, however, saying she could have come up with something even better if she had more time. The 39-year-old said: 'It was just an idea to begin with that developed into reality, they looked fantastic. 'I've never had any experience making anything like this before, I'm just one of those mums who likes to have a go at everything.

'I still think I could have done a better job though if I'd had more time but that may just be me being pedantic!'

A GERMAN mayor's controversial new parking policy has raised a few eyebrows after he designated the town's 'more challenging' parking space to male drivers.

Mayor Gallus Strobel hit the headlines this week after unveiling the new car parking plan for motorists in the small German town of Triberg.

Under the new system, each space in the town's main car park been painted with a male or female symbol, depending on its difficulty rating.

While female drivers have been assigned wider and well-lit spaces located closer to the exit, male drivers will need to pull in at more difficult angles and avoid cement pillars.

The 58-year-old mayor wants to 'challenge political correctness' with his new policy, claiming the tight spaces will be an 'attraction' for ambitious drivers.

'Men are, as a rule, a little better at such challenges,' the 58-year-old told German newspaper SĂźddeutsche Zeitung.

Strobel has denied the new policy is sexist towards women, claiming he has received mostly positive feedback for his 'equal minded' new parking programme.

He added: 'Of course, there are also great women drivers! They are, of course, most welcome!'

The mayor also argues that the move has been good advertising for the town, while he has also been contacted by motorists interested in travelling to Triberg to take on the parking challenge.

Carrick has become a progressive centre of commercial activity helped to a large

extent by the regions favourable tax designation status. Among its biggest employers are Bank of America and Masonite.

The lively market town has a strong retail and services sector, attracting numerous prestigious companies to its soil. Notably; Supervalu, Heatons, Woodies, Bay, Oasis, Menary’s, Supermacs, KFC and Esquires. Carrick-on-Shannon offers great support services with a number of mortgage brokers, insurance brokers and solicitors based in the town.

Leitrim County Development Board and the Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce work hard to ensure that the town thrives as a commercial hub and an attractive place to live and work. The County Development Board incorporates 'The Economic Development Group', which is comprised of enterprise development agencies and chaired by the County Manager. The group focuses on overseeing the implementation of economic development projects, as well as working on joint initiatives to promote investment,entrepreneurship and job creation in the county.

A town seeped in history Carrick-on-Shannon is steeped in history, dating back to the ancient strongholds of the O'Rourkes of Breffni and old time rivals O'Raghnaills of north Roscommon. Carrick-onShannon was granted a Royal Charter and named a borough with its

own seal in 1607. It's historic background is so strong, that Carrick-onShannon has a sign-posted historical walking tour of the town, which allows visitors to discover its historical buildings, in particular The Famine Graveyard, Workhouse and Garden of Remembrance. Leitrim was one of the worst affected counties during the famine, losing a huge proportion of its population to disease, starvation and emigration. The Garden of Remembrance, which was opened by President Mary McAleese, remembers the thousands of Leitrim people who perished in the great hunger of the late 1840's.

Carrick-on-Shannon is a mecca for historical architecture, with preserved buildings from earlier centuries such as The Court House, built in 1821 and the Protestant Church built in 1827.

The old Courthouse was the creation of Architect William Farrell, who also designed Colebrook House, Co. Fermanagh, the residence of Lord Brookborough, former Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.

It is not now seen to best advantage as the removal for safety rea-

sons of four massive Doric pillars and the rest of the portico has left it with a rather bare appearance. Since its erection it has been the centre of local government and administration for Co. Leitrim.Leading from the Old Courthouse is the Town Clock and St. George's Terrace. As the name suggests, Carrick-on-Shannon has had a long association with the St. George Family. The St. George Family resided at 'Hatley Manor'. The Georgian home was erected in 1830 and can be seen along the trail.

The Costello Memorial Chapel is based on Bridge Street and is the smallest chapel in Europe and the second smallest in the entire world.

It was built in the 19th century by a rich merchant named Edward Costello as a memorial and burial vault for his wife, Josephine. The 16 foot long, 12 foot wide and 30 feet high chapel holds the two coffins on each side and covered with slabs of reinforced glass. Carrick-on-Shannon was the home of Carrick Castle, but sadly no more. However, the remains of Carrick Castle can still be seen on the N4 bypass, near the Carrick Bridge.
