STUDENTS ADVANCE TO WORLD F1 IN SCHOOLS FINALS

JCI HONOURS MAYO’S TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG PEOPLE

RESTRICTIONS TIGHTEN AS COVID-19 CASES RISE A

S we go to press the country is bracing itself for the reversal of some of the plans to re-open the country. As the west and north-west has been “relatively” free from Covid-19, compared with other counties in the east and midlands, this will be unwelcome news for those who have behaved admirably during lockdown and people involved in sport. It will also be disheartening for older people who have “cocooned”, played by the distancing rules, in addition to those on the front line who are exhausted after months of extreme pressure, to hear about the tightened restrictions. If the older, vulnerable, demographic are to be asked to limit their time outdoors, indoor gatherings reduced to 6 and outdoor groups reduced to 15, it will be a sad development for them and all the population who have complied with coughing etiquette, hand-washing and maskwearing for close on five months now. It also looks like sporting events will be almost completely behind closed doors for the time being. Undoubtedly, it is causing confusion at government level where some cabinet ministers are questioning whether the Nphet advice is out of kilter with that of

public health experts in other EU countries. In places where there is a similar or higher level of infection to Ireland, schools and bars are open, international travel allowed and gatherings of thousands are permitted. The current concern has been a consequence of the sharp rise in cases in recent weeks and how best to deal with it. Speaking to Ocean FM recently, Ballymote native Professor Ivan Perry, Dean of Public Health at University College, Cork, supports a much tougher line with the virus. He is a member of the Zero Covid Ireland group of experts calling for stricter measures. He advocates a ban on all non-essential travel, testing and tracking of all incoming people and more active case-finding and contact tracing. He says it is vital that everybody get the flu vaccine this year. Professor Perry said that controlling the virus itself is what matters. That’s not happening at present. He says that without a fundamental change in the current strategy of attempting to deal with the virus, we are sleepwalking towards a major surge of infections in October/November this year. We hope Professor Perry’s fears are not realised. But let’s all work and act to ensure none of this happens.

Mayo students advance to World F1 in Schools Finals

S

tudents from St. Muredach’s College in Ballina have qualified for the F1 in Schools World Finals in Melbourne next year. Their team ‘Annex Racing’ beat off stiff competition to take fourth place in the national finals held earlier this year. F1 in Schools is the only global multidisciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered cars made from the F1 model block. Annex Racing consists of Team Manager Niall Treacy, Ben Maloney, Cian Newcombe and Harry Regan. Team Manager Niall Treacy said: “I have benefited enormously from this competition. At the beginning a managerial role was new to me and this competition has allowed me to develop my leadership and communication skills through interaction with sponsors and other parties. I have also learned a variety of new software including InDesign which I used to create the portfolios.” Design and Manufacturing Engineer Ben Maloney said: “F1 in Schools provides an excellent challenge to young aspiring engineers like myself. It has enabled me to push both my design and engineering skills to their limits allowing for rapid improvement of my abilities which I believe will stand to me later in life. It has also improved my communication skills through many meetings with our manufacturing partners.” Aaron Hannon, Co-Founder of F1 in

Through participating in the challenge, the Annex Racing team have earned a once-in-alifetime trip to represent Ireland at the F1 in Schools World Finals, where they will

As such, we encourage all schools to contact us or visit f1inschools.ie to learn more about entering the 2020/21 F1 in Schools season.” The F1 in Schools World Finals will take place in Melbourne in March 2021.

Ballina man rescues young boys in Enniscrone A Ballina man came to the rescue on Monday at around 8 pm in Enniscrone, saving three youngsters from possible drowning, writes Catherine Gilmartin. Stephen McCauley, who works at Connolly Motors in Ballina, was driving towards the seaweed baths when he saw three youngsters in trouble in the sea. He stopped, jumped from his car, removing his clothes while he crossed the road to grab a surf board. In a few minutes he had jumped into the choppy sea to see them all back to safety; if he had not done so there is every chance that these lives would have been lost. Well known Enniscrone lady,

Christine Kilcullen, who saw it all, said: “People need to be aware that it’s a treacherous place to go swimming and there are so many other safe and sandy areas on the beach to swim.” There is a very strong rip tide current by the seaweed baths and a number of people have come close to

The Gaelic Masters Association which promotes competitive inter county Gaelic games for senior players in the Over 40 age group have decided not to run with their championship for 2020. The Executive, following consultation with all associated counties and weighing up all pertinent factors, have decided that the running of a Masters Championship this season isn't in the best interests of the

membership. Amidst the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, the decision was made after balancing the desire to provide and play football for members with a duty of care to the membership. Considerations, including members' age profile, members' parents, and pressure on playing facilities also came into play. The Gaelic Masters Association would like to thank the GAA clubs and Community pitches who have facilitated

drowning there in recent years. There have been some fatalities there in the past. Said Councillor Joe Queenan: “I will be arranging for bigger and better signage straight away to ensure that people are aware of the dangers here and to prevent a serious accident happening ever again.”

Half of Connacht / Ulster parents troubled over schools opening N

4

early two thirds (57%) of parents in Connaught/Ulster find covering the cost of back to school a financial burden while 30% are likely to get into debt in order to cover the costs of back to school for their children. This is higher compared to the national finding of 27%. Of those who will go into debt, over a third (34%) said they will incur debt of over €500, higher than the national figure of just over a quarter. Connaught/Ulster parents are the biggest spenders in the country when it comes to school trips and extra-curricular activities for both their primary school and secondary school children. 48% of primary school parents have an average spend of €50-€100 on school trips, while 36% spend an average of €50-€100 on extra-curricular activities. Among secondary school parents, 32% spend on average of €100€150 on school trips while 29% spend the same amount on extra-curricular activities. The findings were revealed in the annual Republic of Ireland school-costs survey commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) and carried out by i-Reach Insights in June 2020 when 948 parents of school going children were surveyed. When it comes to methods of payment 75% of Connaught/Ulster parents use their general monthly income to pay for back to school supplies (70% national average), with 25% drawing on their savings, lower than the national average of 34%. The use of credit cards at 20% is in line with the national average with 9% taking a credit union loan, the highest of any group of parents in the country. More parents use the back to school allowance (21%) in Connaught/Ulster compared with the national average of 14%. Interestingly no parents reported taking a bank loan while 4% said they would turn to a moneylender. 64% of Connaught/Ulster parents said they shop online for back to school supplies as they find it more convenient (71%) get better deals (69%) while 55% said they do it to save money. COVID-19 findings The ILCU survey also highlighted concerns of parents brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly a quarter (24%) of parents in Connaught/Ulster reported that there has been a reduction in their household income as a result of Covid-19, higher than the national average of 22%. A fifth of parents (21%) are finding the extra cost of feeding their children when homeschooling to have had the biggest effect on household finances. 43% are struggling with balancing work commitments with home schooling. When it comes to children going back to school, 56% of Connaught/Ulster parents

believe there will be a mix of home schooling and classroom for the new term while nearly half (49%) said that they would carefully consider the measures put in place in schools before deciding whether to send their children back to school. These figures are in line with the national findings. 44% of Connaught/Ulster parents are worried about their child’s mental health for the upcoming term if children do not return to school in a full-time classroom setting with a further 41% concerned about their children catching up on missed teaching. 45% are already concerned that their children have fallen behind in class as a result of home-schooling during the lockdown. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, 39% of Connaught/Ulster parents feel their children are spending too much time watching TV or on mobile devices (35%) as a result of being homeschooled. These figures are slightly higher than the national average. If schools do not reopen or only partially reopen, 41% of Connaught/Ulster parents stated that they are lacking resources for proper home schooling. These include technology, such as laptops (38%), printing (29%) with 41% citing poor broadband coverage as a major concern in delivering

effective home schooling. Commenting on this year’s findings, Paul Bailey, ILCU Head of Communications said; “Of concern from the survey results is the amount of debt that parents are getting into to cover back to school costs with an average debt increase of €40 compared to last year. While the majority of parents fund back to school purchases from their general household income, the use of credit cards has increased from last year. I would encourage these parents to explore cheaper forms of finance such as a credit union loan as 9% of parents in Connaught/Ulster are already doing. “It remains to be seen if schools will reopen fully in September and this brings a number of challenges for parents in trying to manage home schooling and to balance work and child care commitments. Our survey shows a substantial number of parents are concerned that they don’t have the necessary resources for home schooling, including adequate broadband, in the event of schools remaining fully or partially closed. I would encourage any parent concerned about the costs of home schooling or back to school costs to contact their local credit union to see how they can help.”

I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

allina Community Cleanups, the group that has virtually transformed the town with a whole range of voluntary activity to enhance the community and visitor experience, has been announced as the latest weekly winners in the GIY and Energia Get Ireland Growing community initiative. Following the announcement of the nationwide Get Ireland Growing initiative on June 30th applications from all across the country have flooded into www.GetIrelandGrowing.ie to be in with a chance to win a Community GROWBox. Ballina Community Cleanups’ application for a Community GROWBOX was submitted by member Aurora Blanquier on behalf of the group and stated: ‘BALLINA COMMUNITY CLEAN-UPS is a group of volunteers who believe in diversity and biodiversity. The volunteers recently redesigned an area near the river and created the #beelieveinballina trend, which consists of promoting and implementing biodiversity throughout the town. A bee & bugs hotel was built as part of the first project, and the team is in the process of building more in the four corners of the town. The group has also started to paint derelict buildings with colours to brighten Ballina town and its people - including the latest Mural dedicated to Jack Charlton. The group is also working to transform unused grass areas in the town and along the roads and

“WE really BEELIEVE”!!’ The Community Clean-Up group has been in existence since March 2019 but they have seen a swell in volunteer numbers over the last two months as the communities in the North Mayo capital have come together in the face of Covid19. The Beelieve in Ballina campaign captured public imagination with their rejuvenation efforts for Ballina and use of recycled materials. Over 100 people have come out to support the group’s weekly clean-up operations at different locations around the town and the group has a number of future project underway and planned for Ballina. Locals are becoming justifiably proud of their town with its derelict buildings enhanced and painted in bright inviting colours, unwanted shrubbery and weeds removed and some positive structural improvements in some cases. A Community GROWBox is a bespoke ‘seed library’, and once filled with the contents of the Community GROWBox it offers a community library of 100 packs of vegetable, herb and wildflower seeds all freely available to interested growers. These community growers are also encouraged to return seeds that they don’t use, along with others of their own that might otherwise go to waste. It is hoped that each Community GROWBox will enable several hundred people to grow their own and in addition provide more food for pollinators this summer. Through this initiative, Energia has supported 257 community groups with grants totalling €220,000. The recipients include schools, NGOs and Not for Profits, community gardens and allotment groups, GIY groups, hospitals, crèches, direct provision centres and men’s sheds all across the country. HOSE of us who recall the mid-seventies in Ireland may remember darker times when the Northern conflict impacted the whole of Ireland to an extent. For people from Ballina and North Mayo memories of the funeral of a Ballina (Ardnaree) man who gave his life for a cause he sincerely believed in were rekindled last week. Residents of the Healy Terrace area of the town and others gathered for the unveiling of a mural and plaque in memory of Michael Gaughan, a Republican hunger striker who died in Parkhurst Prison in the Isle of Wight, England in 1974. Depicted in the mural is a portrait of Gaughan inscribed with the words “Take Me Home To Mayo”, a phrase from the well-known song written in his honour, while the plaque contains the final words before his death: “Let there be no bitterness on my behalf, but a determination to achieve the new Ireland, for which I gladly die.” Michael was aged 25 when he died on June 3rd, 1974.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mayo Sinn Fein Deputy Rose Conway Walsh read out a number of letters Gaughan had sent from prison to friends and family. These had never been made public before. Well-known GAA pundit Joe Brolly (guest speaker) talked about the history of hunger strikes and their place in the commemoration of Irish history. “No one should apologise for this beautiful memorial. Many young people will come here and say, who is this person? They will investigate the

background and make up their own minds about what happened” The committee behind the mural, as well as so many other good developments in Ballina in recent times, the Ballina Community Cleanup team, is hoping Gaughan’s legacy will live on through the mural, so beautifully painted by Leslie Lackey with the plaque designed by Gerry Ginty. Michael Gaughan was the eldest of a family of six, who lived with his family in Healy Terrace and attended St. Muredach’s College. A friend

and one of the main instigators for the mural, Davy McDonnell, said: “I’m proud as punch of this mural. It is a great way to remember our friend as we knew him”. McDonnell, a wellknown musician, led the gathering in a rendition of “Take Me Home to Mayo”. Councillor Mark Duffy said such murals are essential in keeping the history of the town alive. “We live in a peaceful environment but it’s important to remember all our different historical figures as we approach the 300th anniversary of the town in 2023.”

TOYP Winners (Nigel O'Reilly, Tara Rafter, Anne-Marie Flynn, Sharon McNamera. (Front L to R) Joan Mulloy, Laura Beston, Aaron Hannon, Padraic Rocliffe, Helen Gavin) JCI Members, Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh & Cllr Mark Duffy

t’s not every day that you have young people from such remarkable, niche backgrounds in one room but on Tuesday 11th August 2020, the TOYP winners from Mayo gathered in the stunning Mount Falcon Estate for the ‘Ten Outstanding Young Person’ (TOYP) Awards. The TOYP Awards is a global initiative of Junior Chamber International (JCI) which concentrates on formally recognising young people who are making giant strides in their chosen fields and creating a positive impact on other people, their community and society at large. In previous years all the nominees from across the county gathered with their family and friends for a big celebration, but this year things had to run differently. Originally scheduled to take place in April, these awards were postponed and with limited numbers allowed, a small intimate ceremony was held, but it didn’t make it any less powerful. It was a special evening that celebrated the outstanding

accomplishments of these young people in a number of different areas (business, technology, culture, medical innovation and more). Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh and Councillor Mark Duffy both attended and got the opportunity to learn about the amazing things that these young people are doing. JCI Mayo President Áine Mc Manamon commented “There are many young people from Mayo who are going above and beyond in different areas, and all contributing in various ways to creating positive change in their communities. At JCI Mayo we are proud to be able to share their stories and play our part in getting these outstanding young people seen and recognised.” JCI Mayo was honoured to present this diverse set of winners an award supplied by Oliver Kelleher Trophies Castlebar: Fully certified award winning Life Coach, Tara Rafter teaches people techniques to better manage the emotional stress of everyday life. her vast coaching experience, she began to notice patterns in those who succeed and wanted to create a tool that really made a positive impact in people’s lives. She set about creating the goal setting journal ‘My Life Compass’ and since her nomination has also released the ‘My Soul Compass’ journal. In achieving her dream of becoming an astronaut, Dr. Norah Patten hopes to inspire and encourage the children of Ireland to dream big and reach for the stars! Having a keen interest in education and STEM, Norah founded her own company, Planet Zebunar, which is launching a new series of STEM products designed to encourage, inspire and motivate the next generation of engineers, astronauts,

Helen’s vision for her business is to stimulate economic growth in her community, town and county by using her marketing skills to enable businesses to connect with their markets faster and build their market share quicker. Westport woman, Joan Mulloy, launched her professional solo sailing career in 2018 and is now competing at the highest levels of her sport. Joan was the first Irish female competitor in the gruelling

piece and the cultural and traditional aspects that you see in every design. Anne-Marie Flynn is an active volunteer in her community in Ballina, assisting with festivals, events and fundraisers. She has contributed to current affairs and debate programmes on RTÉ and Newstalk, and is one of the founding members of Mayo Club ’51. Anne-Marie is also a volunteer board member of the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre, which oversees the operation of the Centre and works to support the Director there in operations, fundraising and PR. Despite his tender years, Aaron Hannon has a strong history of medical innovation. His medical device innovation journey began when he designed an automatic shaving device (Enable Arm) for his grandfather, who suffered from severe post-stroke paralysis. He is currently dedicating his time to the needs of patients battling COVID-19. Aaron uses his design, engineering and entrepreneurship background to keep patients at the centre of the design process and improve their quality of life.

He believes in giving back to his community by providing STEM education opportunities to young people. He was recently selected as one JCI’s ten outstanding people in the world. Padraic Rocliffe, Founder of Shine A Light, is everything we look for in an inspiring leader. He regularly gives keynote speeches on overcoming adversity and giving back to those who need it most. This initiative is underpinned by a focus on a series of previous life experiences and challenges associated with depression, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, a near death experience, long rehabilitation process, a spiritual awakening and the use of physical activity to combat many of these tribulations. Laura Beston got involved in activism and charity from a very young age as her family had a big focus on disability and supporting others. She believes that while raising money and supporting charities is important, working towards a long term effect through policy can make a much bigger and more sustainable

impact. Laura recognises the progress in how society views mental health, but believes there is still a lot to be done until it becomes completely destigmatized. Castlebar woman, Sharon McNamera, quietly dedicates her time and effort to helping charities and initiatives supporting women and children. Organising a collection of female sanitary products to be donated to the residents of the direct provision centre in Ballyhaunis, hosting fundraisers and volunteering for the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre and campaigning for environmental changes, she is a true leader that inspires and encourages everyone around her to want to do the same After this amazing Top Ten was selected, the judges had another difficult task of selecting which nominees would go on to the National Awards run by JCI Ireland. The virtual awards ceremony will be held on August 29th and we wish the Mayo nominees that were put forward the best of luck.

“Wingman” seeks volunteers with a dream

P

resented by Baz Ashmawy, Wingman see's Baz meet a person with something missing from their life and acts as their "wingman", opening their mind to new possibilities and showing them what could be. The producers are seeking to find a real character that maybe is a club member in the county that has always had a dream or ambition, something that they've never had the chance to in their life - until now! It could be an artist, comedian, conquer a fear, learn to dance - the list of opportunities, ambitions & dreams is endless Or perhaps there is a frontline hero that someone would like to nominate after all of the help over the last couple of months and reward them for all their work in the community during the recent and ongoing pandemic. Do you reckon it's time for a big change in your life but you need some help? Baz Ashmawy is always a good guy to have on your side. As we get out of the traps of lockdown are those dreams and unfulfilled ambitions waiting to be unleashed, albeit with a little helpful nudge - in the

form of Baz Ashmawy! Now this is your chance! Seize the moment and do something extraordinary for yourself - or for someone close to you in your life! We all know someone who is in need of a WINGMAN. Having guided farmer Jimmy onto the stage in front of a local sell-out crowd, helped Emma overcome her fear and battle her way into the octagon, and brought Conor and Joe on the Ultimate Lads Lads Roadtrip. Baz is looking for new participants to take under his wing and fulfil their ultimate dream in a new series of Baz Ashmawy: Wingman. The series is about helping people to achieve a dream / ambition, to do the thing they always wanted to do before life got in the way.It might be to learn a skill or experience something they have always wanted to do. Wingman Baz now wants to help make those lockdown ambitions come to life. This isn’t about something you can do yourself, but that burning dream ambition that has been out of arms reach until now! Baz will be with you every step of the way to encourage you, to mentor you, to push you across that

47% of managers in Ireland believe their employees may be at risk of burnout, following a change in work pattern or behaviour bought on by Covid-19. Over a third (36%) of Irish employees stated that their mental health & wellbeing has suffered as result of working longer hours during Covid-19. Those working remotely recorded a 35% increase in productivity, and an overwhelming 87% of these respondents have felt the pressure to keep productivity levels consistently high to prove the case for working from home post-Covid. The findings come from a new report published this week by leading global recruiter Robert Walters: Burning the Candle: Strategies to Combat Workplace Burnout.

Medical Diagnosis Despite ‘burnout’ not being a new phenomenon — identified as early as 1974 – the World Health Organisation (WHO) has only officially recognised burnout as a legitimate medical diagnosis in its eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in May of this year. According to WHO; burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and reduced professional efficacy. Suzanne Feeney, Director at Robert Walters Ireland comments: “There is no denying that mental health & wellbeing has been on the agenda for most employers – even pre-Covid. “Increasingly we were seeing offices be re-designed ergonomically, work health insurances enhanced to provide mental health support, and training provided to managers to help understand and deal with employees suffering from poor

mental health. “Many of these policies were geared around personal mental health issues – such as depression and anxiety – which have an impact or were exasperated by work. “Burnout is an entirely different and recently recognised condition which, unlike other mental health issues, can be directly linked to work. As a result, employers have a crucial and central role to play in order to ensure their staff do not reach the point of burnout.” Whilst two thirds of Irish professionals (61%) believe that wellness policies are important, just a third of companies offer what is required by law. According to the Robert Walters’ Burnout Guide, there are six key areas which can lead to or exasperate workplace burnout. Unmanageable workload expectations Since remote working began, 21% of Irish professionals claim that the pressure to deliver results has caused a negative impact on their mental health or wellbeing.

Lack of autonomy and control Over a quarter of Irish professionals (26%) stated that more autonomy whilst remote working was a key factor in their increased productivity. When asked about expectations for the future of work, 29% stated that they would like more autonomy and trust given by the management team. Suzanne Feeney adds: “Only 18% of the professionals we surveyed strongly agree that their roles and responsibilities were conveyed appropriately to them in the job description and during the interview process. “This is troubling because a major cause of burnout for many employees is feeling a lack of control in the workplace – whether it be a lack of autonomy in how they do their work or even a lack of control over their future career prospects.” Lack of recognition According to a Robert Walters survey; less than 7% of professionals have a clear

idea of what it would take to be promoted or to receive a bonus, and nearly a third feel that they are not paid competitively. Suzanne Feeney adds: “Ensuring your employees feel they’re rewarded fairly for their contributions is a key way to improve job satisfaction and help them avoid workplace burnout.

Poor company culture 73% of Irish professionals stated that they feel it’s important that their company organises team bonding activities. However less than half (43%) of businesses take the time to plan such activities or days. 80% of professionals also highlighted the importance for managers to have an open-door policy in order to prevent frustrations building up; however over a third felt that they could not approach their leadership team on mental health related matters. Suzanne Feeney adds: “People want to come to work and be amongst colleagues who they enjoy and respect. While hiring for culture fit raises its fair share of problems (as it can undermine diversity), there are other ways to ensure your business has a sense of community where everyone belongs.”

Lack of equal opportunities and fairness 33% of Irish professionals believe that their company is not demographically representative, with a further 52% believing that they have experienced unconscious bias at work. A fifth of professionals believe that lack of diversity in senior management positions holds back their own progression. Suzanne Feeney adds: “More than a third of those surveyed said that employees weren’t treated fairly in terms of reward in their workplaces. Allowing ambiguity for promotion within your business could easily lead to situations that may be interpreted as unfair. Burnout can easily occur for individuals who feel they are a minority within their workplace.”

HAT started in Achill turned out to be so popular it is now set to be replicated in other communities around Ireland. ‘Splendid Reflections’ on the “What’s On in Achill” Facebook page showcased musical and artistic talent on Achill and has had over 350,000 views since the first broadcast at the start of July. Over the course of the month, a total of 24 episodes were broadcast, with the final episode featuring Francois Colussi of Pure Magic playing an accordion while sitting on a paddle board in the middle of Keel lake broadcast on Wednesday, the week before last. The series was produced by Seán Molloy and Emmet Callaghan of Blue Flag Media, who confirmed that following the success of ‘Splendid Reflections’, they have been asked to produce a similar series for Tory Island in Co Donegal.

They both admitted that they stumbled across the format of filming the musicians playing in the Achill countryside as something to do during the current pandemic and did not believe it would be the success it was. “The idea behind it was to acknowledge musicians and give them a platform,” Seán explained. “During the lockdown I thought it might be something which would be nice to do and I asked Achill musician Diarmuid Gielty if musicians would be interested and he said he’d make a few phone calls. I was hoping in the beginning to get six or eight for the entire series but we got six done in one day.” Seán and Emmet pre-recorded the music and edited it around shots they took of the island, using drone footage before putting it all live on the Facebook page. Seán admitted he did not expect the

viewers figures they got but with many Achill people unable to travel home this summer, he feels the series provided them with a link to home. With no venue for the musicians to play during the current pandemic, Seán said that this allowed them a platform to play while also showcasing the natural beauty of the island.“When I thanked the musicians for doing it there were quite a few who said it was great to play music for somebody. A lot of them are musicians who regularly play in pubs and do gigs and that was taken away from them. They can’t do their job. One musician told me he was always told if you could play a musical instrument you will never go hungry. But he said that is different now there is no outlook for artists.” All 24 episodes of ‘Splendid Reflections’ are available to view on the What’s on in Achill Facebook page.

HORMONAL HEALTH THE KEY TO YOUNGER SKIN I

t’s a little known fact but we wear our hormones on our face! You can get all of the face work and Botox in the world but hormonal health is how to keep your skin looking as young as possible. Too little hormones will leave you looking (and feeling) tired. Estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, Growth Hormone, melatonin, and the adrenal hormone DHEA (the most abundant hormone in us), keep our skin bright, supple, moist and less wrinkled. The small creases that crowned my upper lip convinced me to become an anti-aging medical physician. When I was a mere 43 years old I was plucked from the audience as an example of “premature aging.” To my surprise, the lines on my face told the story of what was happening inside…my thyroid was underactive,

my adrenal glands were too stressed to make enough DHEA, my ovaries were not making much estrogen and testosterone, and growth hormone and melatonin were no longer pulsing in me. I was literally drying up.Here’s a brief list of what happens to your skin and hair when certain hormones are too low: Low Estrogen: fine lines form around your mouth, your skin and eyes become dry, your hair thins, crow’s feet form, and forehead wrinkles multiply Low Testosterone: causes facial wrinkles to increase at a faster rate Low Thyroid: you’ll notice dry, scaly skin, thinning eyebrows–especially the outer brows, your hair becomes brittle and thin, and your face/eyelids can look puffy DHEA: the plus side of low DHEA is less leg and underarm hair, but with

that your skin and hair is depleted of its natural oils, losing sheen and healthy glow Melatonin: in addition to poor sleep, low melatonin makes you look generally older than your age Growth Hormone: lack of growth hormone causes your upper lip to thin and makes the jaw line look smaller. It also causes deeper skin wrinkles. Hormones have been given bad press but it’s time to set the record straight. Did you know that the WHI study which damned hormones did

NOT show any increase in breast cancer in women taking only estrogen? Only the women in the WHI study who used synthetic progesterone (Provera) had an increase in cancer. Despite the safety of natural hormones, the media hype surrounding this 2001 study caused hormone backlash. Millions of women stopped all forms of hormones causing epidemics of bone loss, insomnia, depression, and sexual dysfunction, not to mention a lot of sad skin and bad hair days. Ask your doctor to measure these hormones: DHEA-S, for adrenal DHEA TSH, free T3 and free T4 Thyroid hormones

IgF-1 for growth hormone Sex hormones such as Estrogen and Testosterone are safe to use if you use bioidentical forms, in a balanced way, (always use progesterone with estrogen). Never eat estrogen, take it by the skin. Melatonin and DHEA are available over the counter in most pharmacies. European studies have shown that using bioidentical estrogen by skin lotion, balanced with natural progesterone was safe. Educate yourselves and your doctors about safe uses of hormones so that you can look and feel even better after 50.
