ARMERS everywhere certainly have a lot on their plates right now. Against a background of widespread claims that agriculture is an energy-hungry industry and a major contributor to the climate change challenge and consumers being urged to move towards plant-based diets, not even mentioning Brexit, Irish farmers on the ground have been struggling to get their “fair share” of the revenue accruing from their labours on the farm. Beef farmers who have been protesting outside meat factories around the country for more than two weeks over low stock prices have finally agreed to sit down with all the stakeholders, which includes the state and Meat Industry Ireland, who had been threatening legal action if the farmers refused to removed their blockade. The protests have been organised nationwide by Beef Plan, a movement founded last October, which currently has in the region of 1,000 members in Mayo alone. The protest witnessed outside the Dawn Meats Plant in Ballyhaunis last week (which initiated 200 temporary lay-offs) was part of this campaign. Beef Plan aspires to set up its own co-ops to handle the slaughtering of cattle and market their own beef products. They claim the Government’s €100m Brexit aid measure is only a “fraction of what the industry needs now”. Essentially, the group wants more money for the beef they are selling to factories before it ends up on shop shelves. They say retailers should take more responsibility for low beef prices at the moment. Continued on Page 4

Bishop criticises adults who give alcohol to teens T he Bishop of Elphin, Kevin Doran made headlines recently when he hit out at adults responsible for supplying alcoholic drink to teenagers. A report in the Irish Independent quotes the bishop and the diocese: “The streets of Sligo were full of young people having "a laugh" and "enjoying the atmosphere" at the summer festival. “Some groups of young teenagers were walking around openly with cans of beer". It added that one particular group had taken over a dilapidated building for an "impromptu party". "Adults who should know better are clearly sourcing alcohol for minors or selling it to them illegally, and without any consideration for the consequences," the diocese said. "If we expect our young people to behave responsibly and safely, then we have to begin by behaving responsibly ourselves."

Roscommon wheel theft condemned by IFA IT may sound like a simple thing but the theft of a sets of wheels from a Roscommon farm can be costly and extremely inconvenient for the farmer afflicted. The county’s IFA Chairman has condemned the recent theft of a set of dual wheels from a tractor. The theft occurred in Cloonshannagh, Roosky sometime between 7 p.m. on July 29th and 8.00 a.m. on July 30th. Gardaí say the property was valued at €4,000 and that the thief or thieves knew what they were doing. Roscommon IFA Chairman Jim O’Connor appealed for people to come forward if they had information. “The reality is that with so many criminals loose around the countryside, property is at risk,” he said. He urged anyone with information to contact the Gardaí and hoped those responsible would be brought before the courts.
The sentiments were backed up by Fr. Bernard McGuckian of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. He said such adults were “seriously irresponsible”. The Jesuit priest, who retired last year as director of the Pioneers, spent 50 years working with up to 700 secondary schools in Ireland, the US, Canada and New Zealand promoting abstinence among teenagers under 18. Speaking ahead of the Leaving Cert celebrations this week, Fr McGuckian said the real concern was the amount of drinking that now happens among Junior Cert students celebrating. "Teachers tell me they are more concerned about 15 and 16-year-olds children - drinking over their Junior Cert results." He said that in the 1970s the concern had been teenage drinking, but by the 1980s it was teenage drunkenness and by the 1990s it had become drink and drugs.
Croagh Patrick used as dumping ground MOST locals and the wider community have been shocked by the news that a section of the “holy mountain”, Croagh Patrick, has been used as a dumping ground for significant levels of litter and other unwanted rubbish for some time. It was revealed in a video posed on Facebook by a concerned citizen, Larry O'Rourke,
IBS Publications Limited ,Office 3, Unit 7, North West Business Park, Collooney, Co. Sligo. F91 NX0T Riverview House, Barret Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo. F26 K2E0
highlighted the scandal. This has caused outrage among those who viewed it. It revealed an extensive amount of rubbish being buried under large stones close to the summit. It is understood the dumping of plastic bottles, cans and other items has been going on for some time. Mr. O'Rourke, who resides in
Westport, said he has brought the matter to the attention of local councillors and other community representatives. “I was shocked by what I discovered. Among the rubbish I found a crisp packet with 15p on it. That told me how long some of it has been there. I have started a clean-up. But it could take a long time.” Martin Keating, director of environment services at Mayo County Council, said the matter will be investigated by Mayo County Council's enforcement team. "The video will be studied to establish whether it is waste or litter. If we are satisfied that dumping of waste has taken place in this case, then we will seek to establish who is responsible with a view to a prosecution." Speaking as chairman of the Croagh Patrick Stakeholders Group, Mr. Keating said a Leave No Trace policy has been in place for some time and efforts are being taken to appoint volunteers to ensure this policy is enforced.

School Lunchboxes Made Easy! Top Tips to Start the Year Well
G
ood nutrition is not only essential for your child’s growth and development but is also important in keeping them adequately fuelled for the long school day. Whether starting school for the first time, progressing from primary to secondary school or returning to a familiar routine; this transition is a busy time for kids, teens and parents alike. Back to school marks a fresh beginning and structure for the next 9-10 months of your family’s year, so take this time as an opportunity to encourage healthy lifestyle routines and habits from the get-go. Lunchbox Checklist – what to include: Typically, a packed school lunch should contain all of the major food groups. Examples:
1 portion of starchy carbohydrate (e.g. wholegrain bread, pittas or wraps, brown rice/pasta) 1 portion of protein food (e.g. chicken, fish, egg, pulses) 1 portion of dairy [e.g. yogurt (125g), cheese (25g) or milk (200mls)] 1(+) portion of vegetables (e.g. carrot sticks, peppers, sweetcorn, lettuce, onion) 1(+) portion of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear, kiwi) A drink of water and/or milk Paula Mee, Independent Dietitian, Assistant Lecturer and Author advises “It’s worth investing in a lunchbox that has multiple layers or compartments. They are widely available, tend to be
very durable and really encourage you to prepare a varied lunch that is both delicious and appealing to the eye - you could include a sandwich in the bottom layer and fill the top layer with a selection of delicious eats such as cheese cubes, grapes, mandarin pieces, raspberries, strawberries, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, sugar snap peas, pepper slice, humus or carrot batons”. Below are some tasty lunchbox ideas to try: Sandwich fillers: Tuna and sweetcorn mix; Chicken, mixed salad and tomato relish; Turkey, grated cheddar cheese and tomato; Salmon, cream cheese and spinach leaves. Sandwich alternatives: Pesto pasta salad with chicken and peppers; Mild spiced couscous with roasted vegetables and chickpeas; Brown rice salad with mixed diced vegetables and sliced hardboiled egg; Homemade soup and brown bread. Snacks: Carrot and red pepper sticks with hummus; Cubed cheddar cheese with grapes; Fruit salad with yogurt and seeds; Fresh fruit smoothie made with milk or yogurt. Did you know? The Department of Health’s Healthy Eating Guidelines recommend 3 servings from the ‘milk, yogurt and cheese’ food group each day as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Between the ages of 9-18 years, 5 servings per day are recommended due to the increased calcium requirements at this life stage. Examples of
one serving include a 200ml glass of milk, 125g pot of yogurt and 25g of hard cheese e.g. cheddar cheese. Caroline Gunn, Nutritionist with the National Dairy Council says “Milk is one of the best dietary sources of calcium, a nutrient that is well recognised for its important role in normal bone growth and development. Childhood and the adolescent years are particularly important for forming healthy bones.” “In addition, people often forget that there is more to milk and dairy than calcium, with one glass of milk also providing us with protein, potassium, phosphorus, iodine, vitamin B2 and vitamin B12 – each playing a variety of important roles for our health. For example, iodine contributes to normal cognitive function; vitamin B2 assists with the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; while vitamin B12 plays a role in immune function”, explains Caroline. The National Dairy Council is now taking registrations for the School Milk Scheme for the 2019/2020 school year. Only children registered in participating schools can avail of this fantastic service. If you would like your child’s school to avail of School Milk please contact the National Dairy Council on 01 290 2451 or email schoolmilk@ndc.ie. Farmers’ Protests - Tip of the Iceberg continued from front page They want to regain control of an animal from its birth to when it’s slaughtered and implement a minimum cost of production plus a margin. Currently, prices are set by the factories. The person who takes 100% of the risk, the primary producer, has no power in the matter. Beef prices are down 45 cent per kilogram from last year, according to the
IFA. (who are not directly involved in the protests). EU prices are also down 6% on last year. The current steer base price for beef is €3.45 per kg. According to Beef Plan if the consumer spends €10 on beef, the retailer gets €5.10, the factory gets €2.90 and the farmer gets €2. While it is hoped the talks will bring a
resolution and prevent further lay-offs at factories the current protest environment is just the tip of the iceberg when we see what’s coming down the tracks for the farming community. When we throw Brexit, climate change, EU plans to import Argentinian beef, rural decline and other factors into the mix the future for the beef industry here is challenging to say the least.

Sligo’s Geraldine becomes Local Hero after Knock campaign
S
ligo woman Geraldine Lynch has been named the county’s Local Hero by Sligo Retail Park for her work in championing the plight of people with invisible disabilities at Ireland West Airport, Knock. Geraldine, whose mission is to eliminate stigma and discrimination for those with invisible disabilities, topped the search for
Sligo’s most deserving community worker. Sligo Retail Park’s asset manager Sigma Retail Partners launched the Local Heroes competition as part of their 2019 ‘Do Well by Doing Good’ corporate responsibility programme. And Geraldine was adjudged the most deserving of the award for her campaign at
Ireland West Airport, Knock, to ensure accessible toilet signage highlighting that not every disability is visible. She has now received a prize of €1,000 from Sligo Retail Park towards her work. A brain haemorrhage victim, Geraldine campaigns for awareness around those with disabilities that cannot be seen. “People with invisible disabilities have faced stigma and discrimination when using accessible toilets because others perceive them to look well and therefore not entitled to use these facilities,” said Geraldine. “For these people, the fear of being confronted for using an accessible toilet in public can be a major cause of anxiety, particularly when travelling. “I started the project because I had a brain haemorrhage myself which leaves me with an invisible disability. “So, I wanted to create an awareness around people like me and have lots more work to do to improve life for people with invisible disabilities.” According to Sigma’s Paddy O’Connor, asset manager at Sligo, “Geraldine is a most deserving winner and we are delighted to back her wonderful work.” With big name brand stores, located at Carraroe, just a few minutes from the town centre, Sligo Retail Park offers a wide range with ample car parking.
New Home First Team supporting Older Persons at Castlebar Hospital The Home First Team in Mayo University Hospital (Castlebar) is a specialist team supporting patients over the age of 75 who are treated in the Emergency Department (ED ) and the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU ) of the hospital. According to MUH, the team meet and assess patients in the ED and AMAU to identify any needs that would delay them from leaving hospital after treatment, in order to minimise any delays. The team includes a Physiotherapist, an Occupational Therapist, a Medical Social Worker, a Clinical Pharmacist and a Clinical Nurse Manager. Mairead O'Boyle, Clinical Nurse Manager 2 with the Home First Team explained: "The Home First Team evolved from the work which was commenced by the Frail Elderly Assessment Team in 2016. We are a specialist team whose role is to provide early assessment and intervention for older people by ensuring they receive high quality safe effective care and support for discharge home." The Home First Team aims to: (1 ) Involve the patient in the decisions that affects them when they are leaving the hospital and ensure patients are supported to make fully informed decisions in all aspects of their healthcare both in hospital and upon leaving hospital; (2 ) Work with colleagues in the community to support a plan for patients leaving hospital and identify patients who are suitable to attend the Integrated Day Hospital in Castlebar Primary Care Centre instead of having to return to the ED or AMAU. The Integrated Day Hospital is led by a consultant and multidisciplinary team that specialises in the care of older people; and (3 ) Support elderly patients who are ready to leave
hospital and go home and make sure that decisions made are focused on the patients’ needs. Catherine Donohoe, General Manager, commented: "As our population ages it is important that we have greater supports in place to ease the journey through our hospital for our older patients. In particular we need to have a greater emphasis on working with our community colleagues and this is what the Home First Team in the
hospital is aiming to achieve. "Ensuring we have processes in the hospital and in particular in the Emergency Department to assist in meeting the needs of our older populating is a priority for the hospital and we really hope that this will significantly start to improve their experience. The Home First Team are very proactive and patient-centred and we are very proud of the work they have done to date."

Nicole from Mayo is Rose favourite
Mayo Rose of Tralee hopeful Nicole Loughlin pictured with two local children on her visit to Malawi last summer
P
EOPLE from the village of Shrule in County Mayo will be hoping that history will repeat itself before the end of August when native girl Nicole Loughlin will make her bid to become the 2019 Rose. It is just five years since Maria Walsh, representing Philadelphia, did her village pride when she took the tiara in the Dome back in 2014. Now, Boyle Sports are
backing Nicole to take the coveted title. The 22 year old has been involved in a fundraising campaign which will see a primary school built in Malawi and says she grew up watching the Rose of Tralee with her family and can’t wait to experience it first-hand. But things could be getting even better than taking part for the Maths and
Education graduate as she was the subject of some sustained support from the west over the past few days. That has seen her odds of winning crash into 7/2 from 16/1 with Boyle Sports, making her the favourite to succeed last year’s winner representing Waterford, Kirsten Kate Maher. Nicole returned from Malawi just last month, having first visited in August of last year. “My journey began last August where I visited Malawi to explore its beauty and volunteer in Open Arms Infant Home which caters for orphans and vulnerable children from newborn to two years old. My visit completely opened my eyes and enlightened a perspective that changed my outlook on life. “This experience ignited a fire in me, I couldn’t simply return to my day to day life without doing something to help these wonderful people. That’s when I began to fundraise for the building of a school there to help the young people of Malawi. “From there, my campaign ‘Let’s Make it Happen’ grew rapidly, involving local schools and businesses, raising awareness to our young people and helping those less fortunate. Thanks to the generosity of the people in the west of Ireland, we have opened one school block with plans well underway to further develop the area.” You can see Nicole live on RTÉ television on Monday and Tuesday, August 26th and 27th.

Achill’s Keem Bay among world’s top beaches
CAFOLLAS
TAKEAWAY AND RESTAURANT
LAST week brought good news for Keem Bay in Achill when it was named among some of the world’s most popular and best beaches. Travel website, Big 7 named Keem Bay as the eleventh best beach in the world after releasing its annual list of the 50 Best Beaches in the world for 2019. The beaches were placed using a combination of readers’ votes, aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team. Commenting on Keem Bay, Big 7 stated
that its gleaming white sand rivals anything the top tropical islands have to offer. “Keem Bay is a breathtaking rural and sheltered beach surrounded by cliffs on Ireland’s largest island – Achill Island. Its gleaing white sand rivals tropical islands and the water is superbly clear,” they wrote. “The sun might not always be shining, but when it does it’s world-class. And yes, it’s beautiful even on a rainy day.” Keem Bay was the only Irish beach to make the top 50 beaches with the vast
majority of the beaches located in sunkissed locations such as the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Pacific. The five beaches directly behind Keem Bay were located in South Africa, Spain, Fiji, Hawaii and French Polynesia while Pig Beach in the Bahamas beat the Achill beauty spot into the top ten. The website named Zlatni rat (Golden Horn Beach) in Brac, Croatia as the number one beach, beating off the world famous Whitehaven Beach located on the Whitsunday Islands in Australia, which was named as the second best beach.

nniscoe House and Estate has been owned by the same family for 13 generations. In that time, it has been part of the fabric of North Mayo and its history. This exhibition is a celebration of the generations of families, faces and memories connected to Enniscoe House and Estate. The exhibition will be officially opened on Saturday 10th August at 3pm by Professor Terence Dooley. Admission is free and open to all and runs until the 15th September. Professor Terence Dooley teaches in the History Department at Maynooth University, where he is also founder and
director of the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates. He has written several books on country houses, land questions in Ireland, and the Irish revolution, including The Decline of the Big House in Ireland (2001); 'The Land for the People': the Land Question in independent Ireland (2003). He is presently editing a collection of essays (with Chris Ridgway) on The Country House: sport and leisure which will be published later this year. Susan Kellett; owner of The Enniscoe Estate added; ‘It is over thirty years since I took over the ownership and
management of Enniscoe House and Estate. In that time we have set about the restoration of the house and gardens and and redeveloped the estate into a community focused destination for this rural and regional community.’ Enniscoe House dates from the mid 18th Century which was built by the Jackson family as a large farm house using stone from the old castle at Inniscoe and oak trees recovered from the nearby bog. This building was a tall single gabled building of five bays and is still perfectly preserved as it is incorporated into the present house.
Lough Key to Boyle cycle path commences The news some weeks ago that The Lough Key to Boyle cyclepath was about to start construction was met with a mixture of joy and relief. The start date was conveyed to members of Boyle Town Team at a regular update briefing with Roscommon County Council on Monday last. €500,000 was allocated to the project by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme last November. The contract for the cycle path, which forms part of the Boyle 2040 plan for the town, has been awarded to well-known company Harrington Concrete and Quarries and it is hoped that it will be completed by October of this year, according to Boyle Today. The tarmacadam surfaced cycle path will travel from Lough Key Forest Park to the First Gate of Rockingham before turning right down Drum road, across the Woodenbridge to meet up with the walkway along by the canal. From the Marina it will head into Boyle
via the Woodenbridge and Sligo roads before crossing the N61 and into Boyle via Military Road. This crossing has been the subject of discussions with Transport Infrastructure
Ireland as it involves a national secondary road. The news has been welcomed by Boyle Town Team who applied for the funding for the cycle path in conjunction with Roscommon County Council.

The
Burns Car Sales ŠKODA welcomes Done Deal Motor Industry Report
B
urns Car Sales ŠKODA has welcomed a DoneDeal Motor Industry Review that has placed the ŠKODA Octavia in the top spot for holding the strongest residual value in the Irish car market for the third consecutive year. Strong residual values have always been a major considering factor when selecting new or used vehicles. The DoneDeal report is one of the few sources avail-
able to the public where they can acquire unbiased information on resale values and trends in the Irish motoring landscape. Senior Marketing Manager at DoneDeal.ie, Martin Clancy, commented on the report, stating that: “For the third DoneDeal Motor Industry Review report in a row, the ŠKODA Octavia maintains its position as the Irish car that retains its value the most in the
Motor market with an average depreciation of just 33%. From its new sales value after 3 years the Octavia has proven time and again that it is not just one of the most searched for cars on DoneDeal but is also a real hit with Irish consumers.” When asked why the Octavia succeeded in maintaining strong residual values; John Donegan, Brand Director – ŠKODA Ireland said “Put simply the Octavia has proven itself over the last 21 years as a durable and efficient all-rounder with build quality and reliability few competitors can rival” Donegan added: “the DoneDeal Motor Industry Review report will give confidence to our customers who invested in a ŠKODA personal contract plan; these customers can be confident of their vehicles maintaining some of the best trade in values of any car brand after three years”. The ŠKODA brand has gone from strength to strength in Ireland, breaking into the top five car brands in Ireland with 7.9% market share. ŠKODA delivered 6,449 vehicles to customers of which 2,209 were Octavias. Further success is anticipated with the new Octavia Soleil that was launched earlier in June. With 0% Finance and decent specification, ŠKODA is likely to maintain fifth position in the market until year

Ten young people from Mayo joined 250 teenagers from India, the USA and all over Ireland in Kildare recently for Foróige’s Leadership for Life Conference. The conference, which was launched Monday morning (29/7/19) on the grounds of NUI Maynooth, brings together teenagers, aged 15-18, to learn how to become leaders in their own lives. During the week-long conference they learn crucial life skills such as empathy,
decision making, communication skills, critical thinking and team-work. Seán Campbell, CEO of Foróige, said “The Leadership for Life programme enables young people to develop the skills, inspiration, vision, confidence, and action plans to be effective leaders. “Great leadership is grounded in respect and the ability to inspire. In the week ahead these young leaders will uncover the greatness within themselves and their own unique leadership style.
“Young people have a greater role to play now, more than ever before, in the issues that really matter. Youth activism and community action is a central part of our Leadership programme, and I’m both delighted and in awe of what these young people achieve when given the opportunity.” The 250 delegates, aged 15 to 18, will graduate on Friday morning (August 2nd) having completed various stages of the leadership programme.

St Angela’s College continue to offer University accredited programmes here in the North West!
S
ince founded in 1952, St. Angela’s College has developed significantly and continues to broaden its range of programmes in response to local and national trends. With increasing student numbers, Dr Anne Taheny, President of St. Angela’s College, explains ‘Unprecedented growth over the last decade places the College in an excellent position to continue to offer the highest quality University-level programmes with modern campus facilities, small classes and a strong community spirit.’ She continues ‘As we focus on the year ahead, we invite students to consider our innovative programmes in the areas of Nursing (General /
Intellectual Disability); Home Economics Teacher Education; Home Economics; Nutrition, Food and Business Management.’ Bachelor of Nursing Science (General / Intellectual Disability) students at St. Angela’s contribute not only to the campus but to the local community with many placements at Sligo University Hospital as well as other HSE clinical settings here in the North West. BNSc students enjoy Clinical Placement each year of the programme and gain valuable experience in a variety of hospital and community settings. In just four years, BNSc students can register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and
education t!aining &
become fully recognised nursing practitioners. The College continues to be the sole provider of Home Economics study in the country. With Home Economics Teacher Education as popular as ever, the College strives to meet this demand on a national level. This five-year programme will see graduates complete a BA which is then followed by a Professional Masters in Education (PME). Graduates will also be qualified to teach in a second elective subject (Biology, Religious Education or Irish). In September 2019, the College will offer a new four year BA in Home Economics focusing on the three core disciples of Home Economics; Food Studies; Textiles,
Fashion and Design; Family Resource Management. Graduates of this new BA will become Home Economists and will acquire the skills and knowledge to work in the Community (advocating sustainable health and wellbeing of individuals, families and community groups) as well as the Food Sector (food advisors, product development). Graduates of the new BA in Home Economics may also explore teaching, through further postgraduate studies at NUI Galway. With an emphasis on food and nutrition, combined with business management modules, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management continues to
produce graduates who gain employment in Ireland’s many food and beverage companies, as well as abroad. The four year B.Applied seeks to prepare individuals for the challenges of producing foods safe for human consumption, developing more nutritious, healthier food options for dynamic, ever-changing markets. A five-month placement in year three proves pivotal for many students who happily return to their placement company for fulltime employment. For more detail of these and all programmes offered by the College see www.stangelas.nuigalway,ie/progr ammes

SMALL LIVING ROOM IDEAS HOMES
How to decorate a cosy and compact sitting room, snug or lounge
& GARDENS
I
f you are looking for small living room ideas, take inspiration from our gallery of beautiful small space designs to unlock the potential of your compact living room. When you are redecorating, one of the easiest ways to make a small living room feel more spacious is to inject soft, pastel shades into your design scheme to keep the room warm and inviting.
SWAP YOUR SOFA FOR A SNUGGLER
A bulky sofa can gobble up living room space quickly, so if you have an especially tiny room, ask yourself if you could manage with an equally comfy but far less invasive ‘snuggles’. Otherwise known as a 1.5 seater, it can easily accommodate a parent and child – or a cuddly couple. This room also employs another neat trick that’s genius for small rooms that back onto gardens – a botanical decorating scheme. ‘Pretty florals are perfect for blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors,’ says our Senior Features Editor Stephanie Durrant. Creating this visual link will draw the eye outside and again make the rom feel bigger.
AVOID A CORRIDOR EFFECT WITH A CORNER SOFA
This reception room is quite long and thin, and previously the owners had a long dark sofa, which only added to the corridor effect. By swapping it for a pale L-shaped design, they’ve created a cosy corner and opened up the space. There’s now also room for more seating by way of large floor cushions.
INVEST IN MULTIFUNCTIONAL FURNITURE
When it comes to small living rooms, hard-working, multi-functional pieces of furniture are your friends. Take this coffee table, which doubles as a storage bin, allowing you to clear away any clutter at a moment’s notice. You could also invest in lidded stools, or even a sofa with storage under the seat. Add wall mirrors and furniture with reflective surfaces into your design scheme to maximise the amount of natural light in your living room to make it feel bigger and brighter.
DRAW ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE DOOR USE STOOLS AS SEATS
The first thing you should never do if you have a small living room is cram in too much furniture. Instead, choose a sofa that’s proportional to the size of the space, and if you’re still in need of more seating, use stools. They’ll take up far less room than bulky armchairs, and can be easily manoeuvred. If you like your living room cute and cosy, try clustering colourco-ordinated objects together – from pictures to cushions – to create a coherent look. Make the most of natural light in the room by keeping window dressings simple. If you are lucky enough to have high ceilings, full-length curtains are a good choice as they’ll draw the eye upwards and create the illusion of space, even if the square footage in your living room is a bit meagre. Subtle stripe designs add to the feeling of extra depth. If you do choose curtains, make sure they can be swept away from the window for light or alternatively go for Roman or roller blinds.
Whether it’s a bijou country cottage or a studio flat, it can be tricky to create a relaxing bolt hole when your front door opens straight into your living room. Take the emphasis away from the entrance by creating a focal point with thoughtfully arranged seating. Here, a neat twoseater and comfy armchair have been placed at a 90-degree angle to a slim side table and lamp. A cool neutral palette works beautifully with the rustic plasterwork and the roller blind makes the most of a recessed window to add extra square inches to the room.

MY DAD’S BLIND Play at Ballina Arts Centre Wednesday 18th September, 8pm Centring on a dysfunctional relationship between a blind father and his sighted daughter, My Dad’s Blind uses audio recordings, irreverent comedy and real-life memories to explore a father-daughter relationship and all the awkward, embarrassing and ridiculous ways the two of them struggle to navigate a sighted world... with the help of a guide dog which has just had a stroke. Written by Anna Sheils-McNamee, the play stars Steve Blount and Anna Sheils-McNamee. Directed by Gemma Aked-Priestley. Winner “Best Production” - Dublin Fringe Festival 2018. Supported by The Arts Council of Ireland. "At its core lies an astringent comic sensibility and a lively theatrical imagination, brought to life by the energetic performers. All in all, a singular vision of a potentially difficult subject." - The Irish Times “Feels more authentic than anything this reviewer has seen at the Fringe in years.” – The Reviews Hub Tickets: €18 / €16. Protect yourself from the Sun
W
E are now well into the summer season and it is high time we started thinking about sunscreen. Ireland may not be blessed with a tropical climate, but that does not mean that the sun cannot do damage to our skin. More often then not, the only time Irish people buy sun lotion is when they are going abroad. What people do not realise, is that even in Ireland, the sun can do damage to the skin, causing all signs of premature aging such as; wrinkles, pigment spots and sagging skin. Deeper in the skin, it can
cause changes that increase the risk of skin cancers. This damage can be permanent and irreversible. The answer however is not simply to become a hermit for the summer. After all, sunshine is needed to stimulate the formation of D-vitamin, strengthen our bones and other structural tissues in our bodies including skin. Dermatologists recommend that you protect yourself from exaggerated sun exposure by wearing sunglasses, hats and using sun cream. A sun protector factor (SPF) of at least 15 is needed to give you the protection needed from the Irish sun. You should apply 20 minutes before going outside, we often fail to remember this and as a result only apply when we have already basked in the sun. Not all SPF's are suitable for your skin, so be diligent when purchasing sun lotion. If your skin tends to be on the sensitive side
Mon-Thu 9.00 - 6.00pm Fri 9.00 - 5pm Home and hospital visits catered for Garden/Tone St, Ballina Tel: 096-72189 087-6389500 email: begley.john2@gmail.com
opt for a natural chemical-free sunscreen. Ask in your local pharmacy for the most suitable product for your skin. You should apply a lotion with a SPF of 30 or higher if you are getting above-average daily sun exposure on the face and body. By using higher-rated products, sunbathers and outdoor enthusiasts can safely remain longer in the sun. Make sure that you give protection to the parts of your body that get the most exposure (Nose, ears, neck, shoulders, face, hands, forearms and top of head). Pay particular attention to skin near the edges of clothing such as straps and necklines, which are easily missed. If you are outdoors for long periods, do not forget to reapply. Try to avoid exposure around midday. A general rule of thumb is if your shadow is shorter than you are, you’re more likely to sunburn. After sun exposure, you should always moisturize your skin.
Westport Foot Clinic Westport, Co. Mayo
Chiropodist: Martin Mc Nally Tel: 087 222 6260
Look for sun products that contain moisturizers, such as vitamin E and aloe to replenish the lost moisture after sun exposure. Dermatologists maintain that Irish people should be wearing a form of sunscreen all year round. They recommend that even on a cloudy or overcast days you should have a form of sunscreen on since 80 percent of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist and fog. Also, incidental exposure, the kind received unintentionally such as while gardening or walking the dog, accounts for 80 percent of lifetime exposure. Everyone loves a hot summer, but it is important to remember that babies and young children are at risk of becoming ill during very hot weather. Dehydration, heatstroke, and sunburn can all have serious effects on your health.
It can be very expensive and time consuming trying out different treatments to get rid of head lice. Our single treatment takes up to 90 minutes and removes all the head lice and their eggs. Phone: 087-0967525
