ong serving Town councillors in the northwest and west region may be in line to receive up to €16,000 in retirement payments when urban councils are abolished in June of next year. Environment Minister Phil Hogan has put in place a dedicated fund to pay for the cost of the abolition of 80 town councils nationwide. A town councillor who has served a full five year term and is not elected to any new office will qualify for a gratuity of €2,800 according to the report, and the maximum payment for any councillors with 20 years service is capped at around €16,000. He is abolishing 80 town councils before next year's local elections, but councillors on them will be entitled to pay-offs once they retire. A town councillor who has served a full fiveyear term and is not elected to any new office will qualify for a gratuity of €2,800. The maximum payment for those with 20 years' service is capped at around €16,000. "We have budgeted for gratuities because people, in good faith, stood for the local elections in 2009 on the basis that they were going to be there for five years and on the basis that they were going to continue in office," he was quoted as saying in national media. Town councillors will not be entitled to a retirement gratuity if they manage to get elected to a city or county council. Mr Hogan said he could not say how much money had been put aside to pay for the gratuities for this reason. "Some of the town councillors will be able to stand for the county councils and we can't give the final estimate about what it's going to cost," he said. Continued on Page 2

Town councillors are the lowest paid politicians in the local Government system, with annual salaries ranging from €2,281 to €4,181. They will only get paid their retirement gratuities once they reach 50 years of age. Mr Hogan's 'Putting People First' document setting out reforms to local government does not contain a cost estimate for gratuities, but they should be "quickly recovered" through savings. The overall reforms are due to save €40m to €50m after all costs are paid.

Walk raises €3,550 for suicide prevention A special fundraising initiative organised by Leitrim woman, Roisín Kenny, has raised €3,550 for charities, Aware and STOP. The Walk for Talk, a 6km walk/run from Cloone to Aughavas, was held on Saturday, 27th July. The fundraiser had two intentions, firstly, to raise funds for STOP, the suicide awareness and prevention charity based here in Co Leitrim and well known national charity, Aware and secondly, to get people talking about and raise awareness of mental health issues and the help that is available out there. Organisers were blessed with the weather and over 200 people came out on the day, walking, running and rolling their way along the course. A special cheque presentation was recently held and Rosin was joined by other volunteers for the official handover of the funds.

Newport woman returns from Successful Operation Smile Mission completely changes children’s lives, one smile at a time. Every three minutes, somewhere in the world, a child is born with a cleft. These children typically have difficulty eating, speaking, socialising and smiling. They are often shunned and rejected by their communities. InIreland, corrective surgery is easily available, but in the developing world 75% of cases go untreated. Without outside help, thousands of children with facial deformities worldwide will never have the medical care they need to live a normal life. It can take as little as 45 minutes and €240 to perform the lifechanging surgery that will change a child’s life forever. After the mission Anne had this
to say; ‘No words of mine would adequately describe the poverty and need in this part ofIndia. The need for cleft lip and palate surgery is huge. The mission was one of many similar missions now provided inIndiato the poorest of the poor by Op Smile. Every cleft lip surgery on a child changes their lives forever. It's a simple operation with certain outcomes. The joy of seeing this transformation in each patient makes the hard work of the mission so worthwhile I am humbled to have been part of this mission.’ For further information on Operation Smile, please log onto www.operationsmile.ieor call Operation Smile Ireland at 01 6676659.
IT’S good news for students waiting for grant applications to be processed. The student grants body SUSI says it has completed, on schedule, it’s initial assessment of all first time applications received before the August 5th deadline for priority processing. Last year, thousands of students were forced to wait for their grants to be processed due to delays of up to six months. Caroline Erskine, Spokesperson for SUSI says this years sucess is down to a number of changes to the system.

Walk in the Cotswolds with Bóthar
T
his November, why not join development aid agency, Bóthar in the magical Cotswold Hills in the border regions of England and Wales? Tire yourself out among breath-taking scenery and then relax with a cool local brew in the company of new friends… and all while supporting the work of Bóthar. The Cotswolds hills are crisscrossed with dry stone walls. The picturesque Cotswold landscape is hall-marked with hidden river valleys and distinctive market towns and villages made of the famous Cotswold stone. Many Cotswold villages have enigmatic names such as The Slaughters, Stow-on-the-Wold and Guiting Power. Centuries ago the
Cotswolds was made wealthy by the wool trade, and the results of that wealth can be seen in the many fine manor houses and churches throughout the area. The Cotswold area is well loved as the ideal place to escape for a few days. Cotswold summer days are relaxed and long, but log fires in winter, spring bluebells or autumn colours are all good reasons why visitors come to the Cotswolds at any time of year. Bóthar founded in 1991, specialises in the use of livestock such as dairy heifers and dairy goats in it aid programmes overseas. Through time, poor families are empowered to experience a better life through training and sustainable micro

farming projects. Currently, Bóthar is desperately trying to raise enough funds to complete the creation of a small creamery for an impoverished community in in Rusizi, Rwanda, which is among the poorest communities in the world. The families there are already recipients of Bóthar dairy heifers airlifted in recent years but now they are ready for the next stage of development; their new creamery. This will allow the families there to not just add shelf-life to their dairy products but will also allow them increased income. Bóthar animals are now assisting communities and families on their road to a better life; a life containing new possibilities in terms of health and education. Rwanda is one of many countries where the spectacular gift or an Irish cow can make a world of difference. The simple basic task of looking after the animal gives a form of ‘employment’. Then the food supply that follows in the form of milk production and ancillary dairy products ensure better nutrition and well-being. Through time, an extra animal can create an income providing education for the children of the family. Most families in such situations become independent of the project in a five year period at which time they can continue unaided on their road to empowerment. Challenge treks in renowned
historic and farming tradition locations are a feature of Bóthar fundraising events. Locations such as the Yorkshire Dales and the olive groves of Umbria in Italy have proved successes in the past. Pat McCarrick, Fundraising Projects Director with Bóthar said, “In an effort to maintain funding to established projects and in order to create new opportunities for poor families, we have to put fundraising events in place but we like to create win/win events. We feel our livestock projects deserve support but we also make our events as interesting and rewarding as possible. Walking in special locations meets this demand for us but more importantly, it provides a great opportunity for our supporters.” If you like to walk, need an autumn break or simply admire the work of Bóthar you are encouraged to get involved in this inaugural event. An all-inclusive price of €950 per person is required. This includes flights, accommodation, food and expert local guides as well as your fundraising contribution to the charity. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this event. The event takes place from November 4th to 8th inclusive. For further information on this event, please contact the Fundraising Projects office of Bóthar on 071 9120100, email events@bothar.ie or visit www.bothar.ie.

“Supersize” classrooms
Mundy to headline GMIT Mayo campus re-union concert

LMOST one-in-three school pupils in some parts of the country is now in a "supersize" classroom of more than 30 children. As primary-school enrolments rise, average classes are getting bigger almost everywhere throughout the country, with a spike in the number of pupils in classes of 30 or more. But some communities are being hit much harder than others, according to the latest figures from the Department of Education. Children living in areas of rapid population growth on the outskirts of
Dublin, and neighbouring counties, are also among the worst affected. In contrast, class sizes are generally stable, or falling, in many rural areas and in cities, reflecting trends in population. The average class size rose to 24.7 in 2012-13, up from 24.5 the previous year. It compares with an EU average of 20. In Sligo the total number of pupils in primary school education are 7,002. 15.2% of pupils are in a class of up to 20, 52.3% are in a class of 20 to 29 and 22% are in a class of over 30 In Mayo the total number of pupils in

Celebrities and Cancer parents Light It Up Gold for Childhood cancer Awareness Month SEPTEMBER is Childhood Cancer awareness month and Gold is the official colour. Celebrities have been raising awareness for childhood cancer by wearing the Light It Up Gold t-shirt to show their support for the inaugural ‘Light it Up Gold’ initiative to raise awareness of childhood cancer. Among Irish celebrities showing off the gold ribbon this week were Roseanna Davison, Katie Taylor, Mikey Graham, Keith Dufy, Mary Black and cast members from Fair City as well as international rugby stars. Aoife Clarke of the Light It Up Gold campaign states, ‘We are surprised and delighted with the support given by celebrities so far. They have been so generous with their time and are more than willing to help raise awareness of childhood cancer. We really appreciate the boost they are giving to our campaign.’ Set up by a group of parents of children with childhood cancer, Light it Up Gold will run for
the first week of September, the official month of childhood cancer awareness, in a bid to raise much needed funds to finish the St. John’s cancer ward in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, where 1200 childhood cancer patients are treated every year. The main focus of the campaign is lighting landmark buildings around Ireland gold in order to shine a light on the existence of childhood cancer. Aoife Clarke continues, ‘This campaign is to raise awareness nationally and internationally of childhood cancer. Childhood cancer is rare but sometimes that rarity is perceived as nonexistent. It does exist. Childhood cancer has a devastating ripple effect and our campaign is to raise awareness of its existence. Through this awareness we will hopefully create funding to help provide better facilities and treatments to give our children a better future.’ The week will culminate with the “Golden

Some of our celebrity supporters will be in attendance. Tickets are E60 and are still available. All funds from the ball will help to fund completion of St John’s Cancer ward, Our Lady’s Hospital, Crumlin. Prof. Owen Smith, Consultant Haematologist states that “It shouldn’t be up for debate – children should be given the best treatment and the best healing and recovery conditions. In terms of the physical conditions in St John’s ward, they’re 50 years behind the level of care we are providing” Please join the Light It Up Gold team on 7th September to raise awareness of childhood cancer while raising much needed funds for children’s cancer services in Ireland.

From village parties in
?
the early 1900s right down to their current international profile in the new millennium, each new generation slots seamlessly into the groove of their forebears. Since 1995 the band has made five albums. Their CD’s “Set on Stone” 1997 achieved Platinum status and “Live in Lisdoonvarna” 2002 was awarded “Traditional Album of the Year”. To coincide with the band’s centenary in 2009 the band was awarded a Hall of Fame award. The band has travelled extensively, visiting Britain, Northern Ireland, Europe and the U.S. They have performed at Glastonbury twice and in 2009 headlined on the Acoustic
Stage. The band has also performed concerts in Milwaukee, Lincoln Centre New York, Ireland’s National Concert Hall and Cork Opera House to name but a few. The Kilfenora features fiddles, bass, cello, flutes, banjo, concertina and accordion, with what "Folk Roots" magazine called "one of the tightest rhythm sections in the world". 2012 saw the launch of this band’s current album, aptly called “Chapter 8”, it being the eighth since the formation of the band in 1909. As Earle Hitchner of the Wall Street Journal states,“..It is that ultimate rarity among céilí band albums: a feat for the feet and a feast for the ears.”

Irish Fertility Clinics Forced to Self Regulate
THE National Infertility Support and Information Group (NISIG) will call for urgent government action on the report of the Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction at their National Conference on September 14th. There is currently no governing body for Irish fertility clinics in Ireland and NISIG believe a set of regulations, guidelines or standards urgently need to be implemented by the government for the protection of both Irish clinics and patients. The report, published in 2005, was thorough and detailed, however it needs to be updated and… implemented. The National Conference on Infertility will take place on Saturday September 14th in Thomond Park, Limerick. Hosted by NISIG, the conference will address: Irish legislation – There is currently no governing body in Ireland for Human Assisted Reproduction, therefore Irish clinics have had to self-regulate. Infertility - A hidden epidemic – 1 in 6 Irish people are affected by fertility issues. Psychological issues facing patients and those surrounding them who have problems conceiving The medical problems that may cause fertility issues in both men and women Personal stories detailing two different struggles with infertility Infertility tourism - many Irish patients are seeking treatment abroad for various reasons Donor conception Recurrent Miscarriages and Immune Issues Implantation Failure Mindfulness Optimising IVF Outcomes Genetic Screening in IVF Secondary Infertility Leading Senior Embryologist Mr Declan Keane, Director ReproMed clinic and independent ambassador to NISIG says; ‘Ireland lacks significant legislation regarding infertility treatment. Irish clinics have been forced to self-regulate over the past number of years, as the Irish government have yet to put in place a set of guidelines.’ Helen Browne cofounder of NISIG states that Irish people should be able to access (a) the list of registered infertility practitioners in Ireland, (b) the services provided by each practitioner, (c) outcome data by just visiting ONE website. Sub-group analysis, Audit and Quality assurance is critical for all stakeholders involved in this very complex field of medicine.

40-Not-Out : Reynolds To Face Unbeaten Trainor For Celtic Title F orty-year-old Sligo boxer Stephen 'Block' Reynolds is looking to turn back the years as he faces unbeaten 25-year-old knockout artist, Declan Trainor, for the Celtic Nations cruiserweight title in only his third appearance in the pro ranks on the packed 'Celtic Clash' bill at the Devenish Complex in Belfast on Saturday, September 14. In his opening year as a professional boxer the veteran earned a hard fought points win over Uganda's Moses 'The Black Mamba' Matovu in Belfast, and last time out Reynolds floored Lithuanian tough-nut, Ruslan Bitarov, four times on route to a spectacular second round knockout victory which boosted his ranking in the Irish Cruiserweight division from 9th to 5th place in a period of just six months. “I got a great start to the pro game but it all went quiet in the last six months due to shows being called off and quality opponents not being available, but that’s all changed now and I’ve got the biggest challenge of my boxing career ahead of me against Declan Trainor for the Celtic Nations belt," said five time Irish amateur champion Reynolds, “My opening fight versus Matovu was a real eye opener to be honest. I knew the jump from amateur code to the pros was a big one and I learned on my debut not to underestimate these guys or it could be lights out. “I knew what to expect when the Bitarov fight came around. We decided not to give him a second of peace, and to whip in the body shots from the first bell. Luckily we got some video of him from a contact in Europe and we knew he didn’t cope well with an assault to the body. “The plan worked to perfection, but fair play to Bitarov because he was game and really came to win. He could’ve easily quit after he went down from the first knockdown, but he kept getting up and coming at me. It was over quickly but I trained hard for that fight because it was a step up in class and a step up from the four round to six round level. I’ll have to work even harder again for this fight in Belfast as
its another step up to 8 rounds which leaves the door open for an Irish title shot then,” added the Ballinacarrow Boxing Club coach. “I’ve watched a bit of Trainor on YouTube, he’s a ferocious all-action puncher with accurate hands and fast feet. He has won all his fights by first round knockout so I’ll have to have my wits about me from the opening bell. He started his pro career in Australia and stopped one of their champions in the first round. That was just Declan’s debut and is still the only fight that his opponent has ever lost, so you can imagine it sent a bit of a shock wave through the scene,” outlined Reynolds. Trainor carried on in Ireland where he left off in Australia with first round demolition of Hungarian brawler Tamas Danko in March of this year. “I know it’s a risky fight and a lot of people are making Trainor a favourite to beat me in Belfast but I haven’t got the time to hang around and fight soft opponents. At my stage I haven’t time to waste, I want the best in Ireland and I want them now. It’s a really evenly matched fight but I know my strength and experience will be enough to overcome Trainor’s speed and youth on the night,” explained unbeaten Reynolds. “Stephen has been a revelation since turning pro,” said manager Leonard Gunning. “No one comes into a pro ring in better condition than Stephen and I know how hard he works to get himself in that shape. We know he hasn’t got another 10 or 15 years left in his career like regular boxers who turn professional, so his acceleration through the ranks is on fast forward. “It makes exciting viewing for the droves of supporters that travel from Sligo to watch his fights. This is a very risky fight for Stephen, he could have taken a much softer fight but built his record up to 10-0 he is always pushing for hard fights and now he has gotten his wish.” The show, dubbed the ‘Celtic Clash’ features two other Celtic Nations title fight and rising talent from across Ireland

Teletubbies say Uh Oh: Farmer floods Dipsy, Laa-laa, Tinky Winky and Po’s home to deter tourists A farmer has flooded the home of children’s TV favourites the Teletubbies – because she was sick of tourists trespassing on her land in Wimpstone, Warwickshire. The hill house used by Dipsy, Laa-laa, Tinky Winky and Po in the CBeebies show has been turned into a pond by the farmer. When the Bafta-winning show, which was shot on the farm from 1997 to 2001, was axed the television set was removed leaving just a gentle grassy slope. But Teletubbies fans kept trespassing on the hill until owner Rosemary Harding moved the diggers in and turned the site into a pond. ‘People were jumping fences and crossing cattle fields,’ said the 63-year-old, who runs an aquatics shop at the countryside location. ‘To be honest, we’re pleased to see the back of it,’ she told the Sunday People. The hill was decorated with a magic windmill, windows and flowers during the show’s four-year run, which is still being shown on children’s TV channel CBeebies. The BBC filmed 365 episodes of the Teletubbies and it went on to be worldwide TV hit. Dipsy, Laa-laa Tinky Winky and Po also topped the pop charts. The show’s theme tune ‘Teletubbies Say Eh Oh’ reached No.1 in December 1997, and sold more than one million copies to stay in the Top 75 for 32 weeks.
Hapless farmer gets cute puppy to look after his sheep – turns out to be a wolf
We all know the story about the boy who cried wolf but a hapless Polish farmer has offered a new take on the classic fable. The agriculturalist was left red-faced after discovering a ‘stray’ puppy he had taken in to look after his flock of sheep was actually a wolf. Embarrassed Zbigniew Pieczyk, 50, from Podlasie only realised his mistake when the young wolf ‘howled all night’. ‘I thought it was a sheepdog pup or a German shepherd,’ the sheepish farmer explained. ‘Then when it started to howl every night I realised I’d made one hell of a mistake and I called the police.’ Thankfully, the young wolf didn’t attack any sheep and is now set to be returned to the wild after his unlikely adventure.
World’s tallest drop ride unveiled: Are you daring enough for the 415ft drop? ACROPHOBICS – that’s those with a fear of heights – will most likely be found anywhere but at the top of this hairraising ride. An amusement park in America is developing the world’s biggest drop ride and at 415ft tall, it’ll take some guts to have a go. ‘Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom’ is expected to open next year in New Jersey’s Six Flags Great Adventure park, and will lift riders to a stomachcurdling height before pinging them back down to earth again at a speed on 90mph. The ride will be attached to the park’s
Hot wheels: Wacky engineer fits flamethrower to mobility scooter! IF wacky racer Dick Dastardly is ever paralysed in a car wreck, he’ll surely be ordering one of these. Lance Greathouse’s mobility scooter – christened Lord Humungous – has a flame-thrower that spits fire 10m (35ft), around the length of a double-decker bus. The dental equipment engineer, who sends disabled people ‘pimped’ wheelchairs, spent a month and $1,000 (£645) building the contraption out of en electric golf cart, a helicopter seat, all-terrain tyres and old dental machines. I love fire and wheelchairs so I thought why not put them together,’ the 52-year-old, from Phoenix, Arizona, said. ‘I would like to see some street gang member mess with someone in one of my chairs.’
Kingda Ka rollercoaster which stands at 456ft tall itself. Riders will experience a free fall sensation while sitting in one of three floorless gondolas with seven others. Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, the park’s president, John Fitzgerald said: ‘You’re going to have the Kingda Ka cars racing around them at the same time. It’s really going to be fantastic. Fantastic views, but also terribly exciting.’ The record-breaking ride is replacing a white wooden roller coaster, Rolling Thunder, that has stood there for 35 years.
Feeling hungry? Britain’s biggest burger contains 25,000 calories
With a name like the Apocalypse Burger, there can be no coming back for anyone brave enough to tackle this giant meat feast. Restaurant owners Dave Cossar and Justin Meaney might need some bigger plates after creating Britain’s biggest burger. The 11kg (25lb) monster meal at JD’s Grill in Plymouth contains 25,000 calories and was created to celebrate the restaurant’s one-year anniversary. It took three chefs six hours to prepare and cook the jumbo burger which contains £150 worth of ingredients. ‘The burger was originally created to celebrate our anniversary but we are looking at how we could put it on the menu,’ explained Mr Meaney. We would have to find a way to bring the price down a little and make it easier to build and cook in the kitchen without compromising on the quality of the ingredients.’ He added: ‘We served it up to about 14 or 15 people and they absolutely loved it. ‘It was one massive burger, and a real sight to behold – but an hour later every last bite had gone.’

Coveney 'must defend funding'

Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney
T
he IFA has challenged the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, to defend farm funding in the upcoming Budget negotiations. In a move which will increase the pressure on Minister Coveney ahead of the Cabinet's Budget 2014 deliberations, IFA president John Bryan accused Minister Coveney of overseeing deep cuts to farm schemes in the last two budgets. "Spending on farm schemes between 2011 and 2013 has fallen by 18pc or €119m, compared to a reduction of 8pc or €60m across the rest of Minister Coveney's department," Mr Bryan said. Mr Bryan said the next EU Rural Development Programme to run up to 2020 would be a major test of the Government's commitment to the sector. "It is hugely important that the Government commits to 50:50 national/EU co-financing with national top-ups to ensure a strong Rural Development Programme supporting vulnerable sectors and regions, through measures such as Disadvantaged Areas and agri-environmental schemes."

armers splashed out more than €20m on combine harvesters this year in an effort to avoid weather delays when harvesting their crops. vesting their badly needed cereal crops. Some 75 new combines were registered in Ireland so far this year, costing between €150,000 and €475,000 each. At an average price of €275,000, the total outlay was €20.6m. Figures from the Farm Tractor and Machinery Trade Association (FTMTA) show that combine sales for this year
are tracking the record figures of 2012, when 78 new combines were registered. FTMTA chief executive Gary Ryan described the sales as "remarkable". "The higher sales seem to have been driven by people looking at the terrible spring and fearing a repeat of last year's harvest, which all had to be done in one week basically," he said.

Landini’s Ideal Stockman Package
T
he Landini 5-H Series which ranges from 74 up to 110 hp is a compact tractor with excellent loading handling ability. There are five models in the range: the 80 model powered by a naturally-aspirated engine, the 90 model powered by a turbocharged engine followed by three turbo aftercooled models, the 100, 110 and 115. The new Perkins 1104D engines fitted on the 5-H are an essential and powerful addition to this excellent weight-to-power ratio series. All models in the series are available in “Top” and “Techno” versions. The Top version features a power shuttle with three powershift speeds and a Shuttle Modulation Control (SMC) function. This function allows
the operator to tweak the reaction of the clutch pedal and power shuttle by settling on a more aggressive setting for some jobs and a gentler engagement for others. In other words the operator can fine-tune the responsiveness of each to suit different working circumstances and personal preference. Both the power shuttle and mechanical shuttle versions feature the same 4350 kg capacity mechanical rear lift and a Dromone telescopic hitch is part of the standard package. The addition of the telescopic hitch makes picking up a trailed implement a treat! All controls are simple to use and in convenient positions in the cab. The front loader joystick is located close to the operators arm rest on the right of the seat. A recent restyling process has added a new one-piece bonnet which, thanks to its new design now reflects the same appearance as on the bigger 4 and 6 cylinder models. The headlamps are incorporated into this new bonnet as well as corner lamps above the headlamps for additional light. Irish farmer’s interest to date on the 5-H Series has been focused on the 100 and 110 models rated at 92 and 102 hp respectively. The new hydraulic circuit provides a maximum total oil flow of 82.2 l/min. The PTO comes with 540 and 1000 rpm as standard. The entry level power shuttle version is available with 12 + 12 (with no powershifts) or with 36 + 12 (with 3 powershifts) speed transmissions. The Techno version (mechanical shuttle) is a 24 + 12 speed box. A creep transmission is available on both Techno and Top versions. In summary, the flagship model; the 5110H combines a stylist appearance with simplicity and compactness to be a powerful Perkins workhorse and an ideal loader tractor.

Talking Timber Marketing Event in Drumshanbo Where Forest Owners meet Timber Buyers
Northwest Express September 10, 2013
Ash Dieback – please remain vigilant!
T
eagasc’s Forestry Development Department is organising a regional Timber Marketing Day on Thursday 12 September 2013 at the Lough Allen Hotel & Spa, Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim. This is a great opportunity to meet with those buying timber in your area and discuss services, options and prices . Most forest owners realise the benefits of timely thinning. However many have queries about how to get the job done. In response this Timber Marketing Day will address the following questions: • Is my forest ready for thinning? How will the thinning operation be carried out? • Is there the potential to co-ordinate thinning with other forest owners? • What is the best way to sell my timber? • What price range can I expect? This free event will run from 10am to 2pm (registration commencing at 9.30am). All welcome. The day will start with an outdoor demonstration, organised by the Irish Forestry and Forest Products Association, on the importance of timber quality for Irish sawmills and the best way to ensure such quality. This will be followed by short presentations from Teagasc, foresters and harvesting contractors. Local Forest Owner Groups will also give their perspective and share their experiences. The most important part of the day will be the ample opportunities for forest owners to talk to foresters, contractors and timber companies who will have stands present. To find out more contact Steven Meyen, Teagasc 074 9131189, 087 6775158 or visit www.teagasc.ie/forestry/events
ASH dieback (Chalara fraxinea) is a serious concern for one of Ireland’s most important native trees. To date there have been more than eighty confirmed findings of the disease in a number of young forestry plantations and other locations. The disease can affect ash trees of any age and can be fatal, particularly among younger trees. The disease has not been found in the wild Ash population. Summer is a high risk time for the spread of the disease and forest and
land owners are asked to be vigilant for the disease. Symptoms associated with ash dieback includes: Wilting shoots and leaves – black/brown leaves may be retained. Stem dieback with brownish to orange discolouration. If you have concerns about unusual ill health in ash please report (with photographs, if possible) any sites where to the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Ma-
rine: by email (forestprotection@agriculture.gov.ie); or, by phone (01-607 2651). Please do not remove any plant material from a site containing suspect trees. For more information on Ash dieback contact Teagasc forestry advisers Noel Kennedy, Mayo/Roscommon 087 9090504 or Steven Meyen, Sligo/Leitrim 087 6775158 or see www.teagasc.ie/forestry or www.agriculture.gov.ie/forestservice

0-6 lead at the break. With Aidan O’Shea and Barry Moran outstanding in midfield, the Westerners were 10 clear (0-17 to 0-7) at one stage in the second half after a run of five consecutive scores, including three from Cillian O’Connor. Dublin manager Pat Gilroy’s decision to risk bringing on the injured Alan Brogan at half-time backfired as the then Footballer of the Year lasted just 17 minutes before being hauled off again with a groin problem. In a frantic finale, Dublin kicked eight points in a row and threatened a monumental comeback, but goalkeeper David Clarke made an incredible save from Bernard Brogan three minutes from fulltime and O’Connor then ended a 22minute spell without a score in injury time before Séamus O’Shea added the insurance point. “We seemed to run out of juice a little bit, and they were coming at us in waves, so it was last-ditch defending but we managed to keep it out, and we showed great character at the end," said Horan.
“Dublin! Dublin in Croke Park, it doesn’t get any bigger. An All-Ireland semi-final with 82,000 people in Croke Park!” The words of the legendary Mayo playmaker Ciarán McDonald, a man who six years earlier had written his name indelibly into the great Dublin-Mayo narrative, summing up what the sight of a Sky Blue jersey in late August at HQ means to any Mayo man. Going into this game against the reigning All-Ireland champions without their captain and attacking fulcrum Andy Moran, few gave Mayo much chance. However, playing some sweet attacking football orchestrated by Alan Dillon, James Horan’s side raced into a 0-12 to
Allianz Football League Division I 2012: Mayo 0-20 Dublin 0-8 The first attempt at this Round 2 fixture was abandoned at half-time last February when fog descended on MacHale Park and forced the referee to postpone the game. Back for a second attempt at the same venue in late March, according to the Irish Times, “Dublin walked down a blind alley and got mugged.” There were more than 12,000 witnesses in Castlebar but many struggled to offer an explanation. Mayo had lost to Cork a week earlier while Dublin beat Donegal by nine points. There was nothing to suggest a massacre. However, with Alan Dillon, Conor Mor-

While there are remarkably few championship clashes between the two to reflect on – nine in total and only two in the last 26 years – there is usually plenty of drama involved whether Dublin and Mayo meet in the championship or the Allianz League. Dublin v Mayo in 1955
The first game was played in a rainstorm and Dublin only earned a reprieve when Nicky Maher, wearing goggles over his spectacles, kicked a late free to force a 1-4 to 0-7 draw and a replay. Although Mayo at the time were considered to be past their best having won back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 1950’51, they once against fought to the bitter end against a Dublin side playing a new brand of ‘modern’ football. However, Dublin, who featured the late Kevin Heffernan, prevailed by a single point on a much more benign day in Croke Park the second time around only to lose to Kerry in the final.

f you’ve been considering planting some of your farm, now is the time to act to have approval for this Autumn/Winter season. Your local Co-op forester can inspect your land and advise you on the Afforestation scheme and the Tax Free annual premium that you would receive (see example below). Like most applications for grant aid, there is a procedure that must be followed. After your application is submitted to the Department it can take on average 3-6 months for approval to be granted, so if your thinking of planting some of your land next season – Act Now. So why consider Forestry? • Tax Free income for 20yrs • Full planting grant – costs you nothing • Retain your Single Farm Payment • Retain 100% ownership of Trees and Land • Timber is a Secure Pension Plan
Forest Premium Example – Say 8 hectares (20 acres) planted on wet rushy marginal land: 8ha x €427/ha = €3416/year for 20 years Tax Free (and you still own the timber and the land and a grant covered the planting costs). When you Clearfell it say 30 yrs later it is returning an average €24,000/ha (x 8ha = €192,000 Lump Sum). If you are considering forestry contact your local Co-op Forester and arrange a free site visit and consultation (see our advert on this page). Western Forestry Co-op have been looking after farmers since 1985. We have a long tradition in farmer forestry and will advise you on the forestry options that are best suited to you. The Co-op ethos of transparency, openness and honesty are the foundation of what we do. Even if you submit an application your are not obliged to plant it if you change your mind.

Horse disposal scheme planned
THE Department of Agriculture has confirmed it is currently examining a number of suggestions relating to a disposal scheme for unwanted horses. The move comes as animal welfare charities warn of a looming crisis this autumn and winter that they say would see thousands of horses die slow and painful
deaths through neglect. Some 6,445 horses and ponies were slaughtered for human consumption in the first half of this year, putting the country on track to slaughter around 12,000 for the full year. However, this is just half the 24,411 horses that were slaughtered in 2012. Strict regulations on the passports of horses for slaughter means thousands of horses are excluded from factory disposal, leaving many with no viable outlet for animals. Barbara Bent of the ISPCA said she could clearly see the need for a horse disposal scheme to prevent unnecessary suffering but added that it was essential the existing horse identification rules were implemented.

focus on farming
Budget 2014 – ICMSA want consolidation measures to continue and protection of farm schemes “PARTLY as a result of intensive lobbying by our association and others there have been some positive measures in the areas of farm transfers and consolidations introduced in recent budgets. We’d particularly recognise the ‘half rate’ 1% Stamp Duty for transfers to close relatives, the extension of the Young Trained Farmers Stamp Duty Relief to 31 December 2015 and the Capital Gains Tax Restructuring Relief as logical and welcome. Those measures need to be built upon if we are to address the continuing problems around farm fragmentation and the possibilities of expansion that will loom large post-quota from 2015 onwards. For a start, the 1% rate for transfers to close relatives due to expire at the end of 2014 must be extended to facilitate expansion and sensible succession planning. The Young Trained Farmer Relief requirement for 50% of normal working time to be spent farming is difficult to establish and verify and should be changed to a five year retention of ownership and use of land qualification. Budget 2013 provided for an increase in the rate of CGT to 33% representing an increase of 65% since 2008. ICMSA totally opposes any further increase and calls for the reintroduction of indexation which was withdrawn in 2002”, said Mr Comer. “ICMSA believes that the reductions in the CAT tax-free thresholds in successive budgets have been excessive and have worked as a disincentive on land transfers.
We believe that the retention of 90% agricultural relief for CAT is absolutely essential to ensure transfer from one generation to the next. We also firmly hold that farm families should be able to avail of the same tax relief for farm leases as non-related farm persons. The current tax code does not allow the same tax relief for land leases to related persons as non-family members which is causing difficulties for farm families that wish to lease the farm to the next generation prior to retirement age. We also urge the Minister to look at a measure for Budget 2014 that will permit stock relief whereby if the receipts from the forced disposal of stock this year due to the fodder crisis are reinvested in livestock in 2014 or 2015, the farmer concerned can claim stock relief at 100% with proportionate reductions if the farmer does not invest the full amount received from the forced disposal of live stock”, he continued “ICMSA draws attention to the National Farm Survey Preliminary Estimates 2012 that indicate that family farm incomes fell by 15% in that year. The cuts to farm schemes contained in successive budgets have contributed to this fall and the fodder and consequent financial crisis experienced in 2013 should alert the Minister to the requirement to fund fully the farm schemes on which so many families depend”, concluded the ICMSA President.

Waterproof boxer shorts let you keep gadgets in your pants
This week in tech: iPhone 5S release date, Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch and Kinect S
tuff, the world’s best selling gadget magazine, fills us in on the hottest tech news from the week including the iPhone 5 release date and a Google Nexus 4 price drop.
IF you’ve ever jumped into a hotel pool and had that sinking feeling your mobile was still in your pocket then you probably need to change your pants. A revolutionary pair of boxer shorts could be the answer. They allow you to take a dip and to keep your valuables safe and dry next to your, erm, valuables. The lightweight briefs have two airtight pockets to store your passport, cash and credit cards and are waterproof to 60m (200ft). Nigel Clifford, co-founder of Adventure Underwear, said: ‘Before I went travelling to South America, I was warned about pickpockets and thieves by all my friends. ‘One of them mentioned that women are OK because they can keep their cash and credit card in their bras but guys don’t have that option. ‘So I made my first prototype pair of underwear before leaving for South America and kept my passport, cash and credit card in it at all times.’ Mr Clifford, 26, of Perth, Australia, added he decided to add the second, waterproof pocket when his friend’s camera was stolen on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. He is now working on a women’s version of the Merino wool pants and hopes to have them on the market in November, just in time for summer in the southern hemisphere.
No deep impact here! In a reminder that we mere humans are as fragile as a bubble, Nasa has released a map of all the known asteroids that are passing Earth with just a whisker between us. The 1,400 asteroids, whose orbits are given a web-like appearance in the spirograph, are considered fairly dangerous but are not expected to pose an imminent threat for at least another 100 years. The ‘potentially hazardous asteroids’ (PHA) are large – estimated at about 460ft or 140m in size – and can reportedly pass within 4.7million miles of the Earth’s orbit. In these terms – that’s pretty close. ‘This “potential” to make close Earth approaches does not mean a PHA will impact the Earth. It only means there is a possibility for such a threat,’ said Nasa on its website. ‘By monitoring these PHAs and updating their orbits as new observations become available, we can better predict the closeapproach statistics and thus their Earth-impact threat.’ In February of this year a PHA known as 2012 DA14 passed Earth within a margin of 17,200 miles, which is closer than some satellites in geosynchronous orbit. The asteroid was 150ft in diameter and passed safely.
Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to be revealed September
iPhone 5S release date slated for September 20
The iPhone 5S and budget iPhone 5C could be released on September 20 according to the latest whispers to come out of the iRumour mill. The speculated date has arisen after TmoNews’ mystery sources told the site that US T-Mobile employees have been forbidden to go on holiday from September 20-22.
Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy Gear smartwatch September, according to an executive from the company. Confirming reports that the Galaxy Gear would launch alongside the Galaxy Note 3, Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung Mobile, has announced that the Galaxy Gear will be revealed at Samsung’s pre-IFA briefing in Berlin. Apple to invite you and your friends to an iPhone-powered silent disco? Apple has filed a patent that describes a method of creating, essentially, your very own silent
disco using little more than a bunch of iOS devices and some headphones. Apple’s patent details a system that works slightly differently, because there is no central device acting as the DJ and broadcasting the same

tune to every other user. Instead a collection of networked iPhones, iPod Touches or iPads will share tempo information, which means everyone in the group can listen to different music but at (roughly) the same BPM.
A new software prototype from the Computer Graphics Laboratory ETH Zurich aims to change that using facial recognition and the Xbox 360’s Kinect camera. The camera and software isolate the caller’s face and rotate it slightly, creating the illusion of eye contact. Only the face is moved, and done so seamlessly – the rest of the image remains untouched.
One in ten children ‘have mobile by fifth birthday’ WE’VE become used to the daily sight of obsessive commuters hunched over their smartphones – but parents are getting their children hooked early with almost one in ten given their first mobile phone before they are five, a study shows. ‘As well as arming kids with mobiles for emergencies and peace of mind, I’d imagine that many parents have bought their kids smartphones just to stop them commandeering their own when bored,’ said telecoms expert Ernest Doku at uSwitch.com. Children spend an average £11 per month on their mobiles, compared with their parents who spend £19. Parents are also likely to spend more money on their firstborn’s phone and bills than on younger siblings. However, more than one in ten youngsters have higher charges than their mother or father. But, despite the costs of additional data and minutes, more than four in ten adults do not pay attention to their child’s phone bill. Only one in four cap their youngster’s contracts. Fewer than one in 20 disable the data function on their child’s phones so they are only able to use them to call and text. Mr Doku recommended parents place caps on their child’s mobile bills. There have been several stories of children running up big bills by accessing in-game paid-for add ons. ‘Make sure that when they’re at home, your kids are browsing the web using wi-fi instead of consuming data by connecting to the internet via 3G or 4G,’ he added. Some 1,420 parents with children aged under 16 were consulted for the uSwitch study.

AND ROVER has released details of its first production hybrid SUVs, which will be capable of 44mpg and be rated at 169g/km of CO2. The figures, shared across the Range Rover Hybrid and Range Rover Sport Hybrid, are a significant improvement on the standard diesel drivetrain’s 37.7mpg and 196g/km in the latest Range Rover, but the firm claims that the new system offers performance on a par with the exceptional SDV8 models. Power is put to the road through an eight-speed ZF gearbox. The entire hybrid system weighs 120kg, making it relatively lightweight for its type. It produces 125lb.ft of torque to add to the engine’s

output and can even power the car independently. Using a driver-selectable EV mode, the Range Rover Hybrids will be able to drive at up to 30mph on electric power only for a range of up to a mile. As such the hybrid system is designed only as a supplement to reduce load on the engine, reducing fuel consumption by making life easier for the diesel V6. The drivetrain’s combined output is 336bhp and 516lb.ft, the latter coming between 1,500rpm and 3,000rpm. Both models will accelerate to 62mph in less than seven seconds, while top speed is 135mph, or 140mph for the Sport. The latest generation models
were designed with the integration of a hybrid system in mind. The liquid-cooled battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle in a protective boron-steel cradle without impacting on the cabin or luggage space. The larger vehicle has the same five-seat capacity and luggage space as the standard Range Rover and retains the fullsize spare wheel, and the Range Rover Sport Hybrid’s 5+2 layout is also unchanged from the standard model. To prove the new system's reliability, three Range Rover Hybrids are set to drive from the Solihull factory to Mumbai, India, on an old trade route known as the Silk Trail.=

Game-changing hybrid Peugeot 208 concept unveiled
P
EUGEOT has created a non-plug-in hybrid 208 supermini capable of returning just 49g/km of CO2 while being able to hit 62mph from a standstill in eight seconds flat. The way cars are built could be completely redefined if technological
achievements made by Peugeot are adopted into the mainstream. Currently only plug-in hybrid cars are able to record such low emissions figures, but Peugeot has employed an amazing series of existing technologies and fresh thinking to
present a largely realistic emissions-reducing platform. The 208 Hybrid FE has no power steering but rides on slim 145-section 19-inch tyres. It’s wrapped in a mixture of carbon fibre body panels and part-polycarbonate glazing, and uses a revolutionary suspension system that saves kilograms of weight at each corner. Working with companies including Hutchinson, CCP Composites and fuel refiner Total’s polymers division, Peugeot has been able to bring together a radical new car concept that could entirely reshape the way cars are built. Many now-traditional systems are done away with altogether, like power steering and servo-assisted brakes. The thin tyres, light weight and energy recuperation braking make additional assistance un-
necessary, and the result is a much more analogue car than modern drivers are used to. The remarkable 208 Hybrid FE needs no home charging station. It uses a self-managing hybrid system and cannot be plugged in to the national grid, in the same way as the ultrasuccessful Toyota Prius. Connected to a frugal 1.2litre three-cylinder petrol engine – actually a modified version of Peugeot’s 1.0-litre unit – is a superefficient motor that weighs just 7kg. It uses ordinary 95 RON unleaded fuel and achieved the 49g/km target using standard fuel. It also promises to be a completely normal driving experience, potentially turning production cars that use the Hybrid FE’s technology into industry-wide game-changers. Volkswagen joins electric car fray
V
OLKSWAGEN has entered the electric car race with two production-ready models: the e-Golf and the e-Up. The two new models use similar drivetrains, with the e-Golf’s largely just an up-scaled version with a more powerful motor and larger batteries. The 113bhp (85kW) electric motor in the Golf should provide a range of 118 miles, while the Up’s system generates 81bhp (60kW) and a 100-mile range. VW has designed the drivetrains from scratch, producing them entirely in-house to maintain quality control and developmental freedom. In a press release accompanying news of the new electric duo’s arrival, Volkswagen claims that the e-Up sets an efficiency benchmark with 62 miles potentially costing less than £2.60; half what the same mileage would cost even in a very efficiently-driven petrol-powered Up. The same mileage in the e-Golf will cost around 10% more. The technology involved should be familiar to anyone well acquainted with the Nissan Leaf or any of Renault’s electric Z.E. models, albeit with a rather more complex arrangement of driving modes.
MK Tyres
Two principal options labelled Eco and Eco+ join four modes that offer enhanced braking regeneration from the motor: D1, D2, D3 and B. These are designed for use in differing traffic conditions and down hills, where the motor might be used as the main brake to recover as much energy as possible. Direct current (DC) quick-charging is an option, with 80% of a full charge for the e-Golf coming up in around half an hour, in the same way as for the Leaf.

RIVERS may be forced to have their cars fitted with technology which keeps them within the speed limit under new road safety rules being considered by the EU. New cars would have to feature systems capable of detecting limits through cameras or satellites and automatically applying the brakes. Existing cars could be forced back to the garage to be fitted with the devices, which would mean that no car in the UK could go over the 70mph speed limit for motorways. But Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has instructed officials to fight the move after he was asked for his views ahead of formal proposals by the European Commission (EC) this autumn. A Goverment source said: "It is definitely something that he is keen to resist and he has told officials that it is something we don't want to do. "To be forced to have automatic controls in your car amounts to Big Brother nannying by EU bureaucrats." The EC's Mobility and Transport Department wants to roll out the "Intelligent Speed Authority" (ISA) technology in an attempt to cut the death toll from road collisions by a third by 2020. More than 30,000 people die on the road in EU countries every year and 1.5 million are injured, with 120,000 left permanently disabled. But Mr McLoughlin has told officials that the UK has one of the best road safety records in Europe, with deaths down from 1,901 to 1,754 last year -

the lowest figure since records began in 1926. French roads saw 3,645 die in accidents last year, while Germany suffered 3,657 fatalities. ISA technology can use satellites which beam limits automatically to cars from a database or cameras which are able to read road signs. The AA said that while an audible speed alert would be a welcome new feature, limiting speed automatically could create dangers of its own. A spokesman for the motoring association said: "It could take away people's ability to get themselves out of trouble with a quick burst of speed, such as in overtaking situations where the capacity to accelerate can avoid a head-on collision." A spokesman for the EC told the Mail on Sunday: 'It is part of the Commission's job - because it has been mandated to do so by member states, including the UK - to look at, promote research into and consult stakeholders about new roadsafety technology which might ultimately save lives. This is done in close co-operation with member states and the UK has generally supported such efforts.' "There is a currently consultation focusing on speed-limiting technology already fitted to HGVs and buses. "Taking account of the results, the Commission will publish in the autumn a document by its technical experts which will no doubt refer to ISA among many other things."

wo regional Timber Marketing Days will take place during September 2013 in counties Limerick and Leitrim. The events are organised by the Teagasc Forestry Development Department, in association with the Forest Service and the Irish timber industry. These Timber marketing events will take place on Tuesday, 10 September 2013 at the Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine, Co Limerick and on Thursday, 12 September 2013 at the Lough Allen Hotel & Spa, Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim. Both events will run from 10am to 2pm with registration commencing at 9.30am. Teagasc Forestry adviser, Tom Houlihan who is organising the Limerick event provided some background “Most forest owners realise the benefits of timely thinning. However many have queries about how to get the job done. Feedback from forest owners has also highlighted the need for a suitable forum to engage with key players involved in the harvest and purchase of timber. That’s why Teagasc has organised these Timber Marketing Days to facilitate forest owners with thinnings coming up to make contact with timber buyers. The day will also give forest owners a better appreciation how the timber selling process works.” Steven Meyen, Teagasc forestry adviser who is organising the Leitrim event explained what people can expect on the day: “The day will start with an outdoor demonstration organised by the Irish Forestry and Forest Products Association

Liver Detox
T
he liver is one of the most important organs that help the natural detoxification process within the body. Human bodies need healthy livers to fight against the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing the immune system and is an important part of digestion. The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glucose by the body in times of need. It can store quantities of glycogen enough for up to 24 hours. The liver is one of the natural detoxifying agents of the body. The human body is exposed to toxins every day. Hormones influ-

Excessive storage of toxins in the body hampers the natural processes of the liver. Some of the most common symptoms are a chronic fatigue, headaches, and a diminished bile flow. Impaired liver functions can cause viral infections of the liver and alcohol induced fatty deposits. The best time for a liver detox is spring. It is used for the elimination of excess fatty acids and other toxic substances from the liver. The liver flush can be described as a regimen of light exercise supported with an intake of herbal teas and the liver flush mixture. The liver flush mixture is a mixture of freshly squeezed citrus and lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a small amount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon of olive oil. A natural food diet has to be consumed for the rest of the day. This regimen should be taken for at least ten days. The liver cleansing formula should be taken for at least two weeks. Milk thistle is a natural herb that has been known to have strengthening and healing powers over the liver. It is an antioxidant and can protect the liver from radical damage. The herb is available in tablet form and in major
natural foods stores. Milk thistle can be consumed after performing the liver flush. Detox provides detailed infor-
