Broadcaster Bryan Dobson (second from right) presents (left to right) John Gallagher, representing the Erris community, Chris Reynolds, Director, Irish Coast Guard, and Dr Keith Swanick, representing the Erris community, with a People of the Year Award. The 43rd Rehab People of the Year Awards 2018, which were broadcast live on RTÉ One television from Dublin’s Mansion House, and hosted by Gráinne Seoige and Aidan Power, saw ten winners recognised for their heroic deeds and remarkable achievements.
T was a proud occasion for many individuals and communities from the western region who were honoured with People of the Year Awards in the Mansion House, Dublin on Sunday last. Among the recipients was the community of Erris and Irish Coast Guard who were jointly honoured, with special recognition for the crew of Rescue 116 which was lost off the Mayo coast in March of last year. The honour at the 43rd People of the Year Awards, organised by Rehab, was presented by broadcaster Bryan Dobson in recognition of the heroic work of the men and women of the Irish Coast Guard in risking life to assist maritime and coastal communities, while the people of Erris were recognised for their contribution to the search for the missing crew. The Awards were broadcast live on RTÉ One from the Mansion House. Volunteer member Caitríona Lucas, who lost her life off the Clare coast during a separate operation, was also honoured. Early on the morning of March 14, 2017, that Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 disappeared off the north coast of Mayo. On board were Capt Dara Fitzpatrick, Capt Mark Duffy and winch team Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith. Hundreds of volunteers, fishermen, and colleagues supported the emergency services in combing the area for the missing crew, going above and beyond in a bid to recover the lost heroes. The bodies of Dara Fitzpatrick and Mark Duffy were recovered in the subsequent searches. Sadly, however, the bodies of Ciarán Smith and Paul Ormsby have yet to be recovered. Continued on Page 2

People of the Year Award recipient Catherine Corless pictured after receiving the Bar Association Human Rights Award last year. Continued from front page Erris men John Gallagher and Dr. Keith Stanway accepted the award on behalf of the community. Irish Coast Guard Search and Rescue Operations Manager, Gerard O’Flynn, said: “The selfless actions of those who put their lives on the line, for the safety of others, means Caitríona, Dara, Ciáran, Mark and Paul will remain an inspiration to us all . . . “I would like to pay tribute to the community of Erris who left no stone unturned in supporting one of the most extensive search and investigation
operations ever conducted in the area. Every possible assistance was provided, ranging from the fishing community providing local knowledge and advice, shoreline searching and, in particular, the huge catering operation that was put in place to provide valuable sustenance to all participants. It was indicative of the longestablished bond between coastal communities and the Coast Guard services. We are humbled to receive this award which honours the bravery of all of our colleagues and pray that their bereaved families will take courage from this recognition.” A total of ten awards were presented at
the ceremony which was hosted by Gráinne Seoige and Aidan Power and the west was represented with pride. Members of the community in Ballaghaderreen received an award for their work in welcoming Syrian refugees to the town of Ballaghaderreen and making them part of the community. Tuam’s Catherine Corless again received a standing ovation from the audience in the mansion house when she received her award for tireless endeavours to expose the injustice of the Tuam Babies Scandal and her continued efforts to give the deceased a “voice” and provide as many as possible with Christian burials. Still keeping it in Galway, the honouring of the All-Ireland hurling winning team was probably the icing on the cake for the west, particularly the presence on stage of Shannon Keady, daughter of former player Tony Keady who died a short time before the team’s All-Ireland success. Ireland’s longest-running and most prestigious awards event, each of the winners is nominated by members of the public, with Young Person of the Year, Community Group of the Year, International Person of the Year and Sports Person of the Year, among the categories awarded. Mo Flynn, Rehab Group Chief Executive, organisers of the Awards, said: “We have services throughout Ireland that support thousands of people with disabilities. Every day our teams in communities across the country meet people who are also doing great work, but they do not seek the limelight or get the recognition they deserve. The Awards serve to highlight all that is good about Ireland and honours those whose courage, resolve and bravery is boundless.”
Ballina man heads Irish beef mission in China
James O’Donnell WITH the positive news earlier this week on the granting of access for Irish beef to China North West Express has learned about a local angle to the news story. We recall the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny providing a guided tour for some Chinese representatives to a farm in Mayo and providing them with a taste of quality beef in the process. However, the man responsible for the work at the
coal face, Bord Bia’s Asia Director, James O’Donnell, is from Ballina in County Mayo and has lived in Shanghai for the past number of years. He has been working to promote brand awareness and educating Chinese consumers about the benefits of Irish beef, in addition to a range of other Irish food products. According to Bord Bia, China officially imported more than 700,000 tonnes of beef in 2017 – a

figure expected to double by 2020. In China, annual per capita beef consumption is low at 46kg, compared to 19kg in Ireland. However, consumption is on the rise. An average annual increase of just 1kg per capita equates to an additional 1.38 million tonnes of beef per annum, and by 2020, it is estimated Chinese consumers will eat close to 9 million tonnes of beef. Bord Bia CEO Tara McCarthy said: “Bord Bia, and in particular, our Shanghai office, has been actively planning and preparing for today’s breakthrough, and we are now well-positioned and ready to maximize this significant opportunity for Irish beef exporters. Today’s timely announcement follows just days after we hosted the China Meat Association and 17 senior representatives from leading Chinese meat importers as part of our Marketplace International event. visiting Chinese delegates had the opportunity to visit Irish beef farms and processers, giving them a first-hand experience and insight into Irish food production.” “Ireland’s agri-food industry already enjoys a strong trade relationship with China. Exports were valued at almost €1 billion last year, while China is our second largest export market for dairy and pork, behind the UK. The opening of Irish beef access is testimony to our industry’s strength, reputation and proven track record in the Chinese market.” Total Irish agri-food trade exports to China reached €974 million last year, more than doubling since 2013. China is now our third largest market overall. Dairy exports reached €667 million and pigmeat exports were over €100 million in 2017. Food and drink is Ireland’s most important export category to China, contributing nearly 80 percent to the total value of exports.

Strand Racing June spectacle in Lacken
T
HE ever-popular Lacken Strand Races, revived in 1997 after a 44year lapse and continued annually until 2012, returns this year on June 3rd (1 p.m.) and takes place on the spectacular beach vista at Lacken Strand, near Killala, along the Wild Atlantic Way. In the 16-year period since its revival the event has become hugely popular, establishing itself as one of the leading horse and pony events in the country. Proudly sponsored by local businesses this year’s event again promises to be a wonderful day out for all the family. After a three-year break the Races returned again in 2016 and once again proved to be very popular with large fields of horses competing on the day. The race organisers now see the event growing to even greater heights than before and is attracting huge fields of horses from all over Ireland. The Races are run by the Irish Horse & Pony Racing Association. It is a far cry from 1953, the last recorded year for the traditional races, which were very different from the modern-day racing on the strand. In those days, working farm horses and half-breds from the surrounding parishes would gather for the races. Nowadays, Lacken Strand Races sees thoroughbred horses and ponies come from some of the top stables and leading bloodlines in the country. There are bookmakers on site so those attending can have a flutter. Those attending this year can look forward to eight races with fields of up to
18 horses (though for health and safety reasons the numbers running in any particular race may be confined to 14 which means some races may have to be divided), providing a fantastic colourful spectacle and a great day of competitive racing. There will be amusements (chairo-plane, cup and saucer rides, bouncing castles, etc.), in addition to athletics for all ages, with toys, prizes and medals presented to all participants in the children’s age groups. There will be prizes for best dressed lady, etc. Hot and cold
food will be available all day. All races take place along a six-furlong oval track. The horses are never more than a couple of hundred metres away from you and the thundering of the hooves of these magnificent beasts on the golden sand as they pass you by at high speed just adds to the spectacle. The organisers appreciate the tremendous support of sponsors and this year are increasing the advertising spend. They will feature main sponsors in all of the advertising and are determined that those supporting the event will get maximum value for that commitment. The spend is necessary and in current economic conditions it has become increasingly difficult to raise the sponsorship needed to fund the event. The prize money payout is in excess of €6,000, which attracts the leading horses from throughout the country. The event will be covered extensively by the local media. The committee are seeking €600 for race sponsors, €350 for main sponsors, and €130 and €65 for full page and half page Race Card sponsorship. Chairman Noel Flannelly can be contacted at 0868139501 or noelflannelly@gmail.com. For punters the Lacken Strand Races present a fine opportunity to kick off the Summer. Good weather will always be an advantage, though weather conditions will have little impact on the racing surface and an enjoyable afternoon is guaranteed no matter what the conditions are.

HOW do robots work? Are comic book heroes really possible? Can a car transform? You can find out the answers to these fascinating questions as IT Sligo hosts Sligo Engineering Expo 2018. The fourth Sligo Engineering Expo is coming to the Knocknarea Arena, IT Sligo on Thursday, May 3 between 10am – 7pm and admission is free. The Engineering Expo is an exciting collaboration between IT Sligo and industry that provides an interactive, information sharing day which is open to the public and openly encourages public engagement throughout the event. The Expo, which is headline sponsored by AbbVie, is a chance to see the superheroes of engineering display innovative, cutting-edge
technologies to inspire future generations of engineers. How do robots work? Are comic book heroes such as Iron Man really possible? Can a car transform? How is Virtual Reality used in the real world? How are engineering technologies being used in industries such as Manufacturing, Medical Devices, Pharmaceutical, Precision and Tool Making Engineering, Agricultural, Construction, ICT and Food Industries? At the Sligo Engineering Expo, as well as interactive demonstrations, you will be able to gain career path information and talk with captains of industry, indigenous industry leaders and companies of all sizes from across Ireland. Bernard Murray, Engineering Manager with
AbbVie in Ballytivnan, said: “As a global company, we offer opportunities for engineers in automation, manufacturing, controls, quality, science and technology, metrology and validation disciplines at locations all over the world. Locally, we are mindful of the importance of connecting with Engineering Students at Sligo IT to offer them an understanding of the technologies and capabilities of our Ballytivnan site. “Developing a pipeline of potential employees who would be suitable to join, support and optimise our work at all sites is critical to the future success of our organisation, clients and our patients. It is important we support the North West community where we can by ensuring we also have a local
focus when we concentrate on identifying this future talent.” Some 45 industry representatives will be at the event, including SL Controls; Abbott; Kilcawley Construction; Ward Automation, JFC Manufacturing; Kuka Robotics; and GW Plastics. And IT Sligo students will also demonstrate final year projects in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Precision and Civil Engineering as well as Construction, Electronics and Computing. Una Parsons, Head of the School Engineering and Design at IT Sligo believes the Expo is “unique and a fantastic opportunity to see an extensive range of activities on show that include student projects, industry exhibits and a variety of interactive activities. This major event is aimed to inspire future engineers, showcase our graduates, provide job opportunities, and promote the extensive range of engineering and technology employment in the North West.” The Engineering Expo is fully supported by IT Sligo President, Dr Brendan McCormack, who said: “The Expo reflects the close working relationship between IT Sligo and employers in all aspects of engineering across the region and provides a real opportunity for forthcoming graduates to meet, discuss and engage with their future employers. It is particularly gratifying to see so many employers from the North West at the Expo, all wanting to employ our graduates – we are seeing employment opportunities for engineering graduates in the North West at a very high level this year.” To find out more, visit www.itsligo.ie/engineerin gexpo

‘My Sligo’ gets much attention on social media W HAT does Sligo mean to you? There’s so much going on in the county that it means a lot of different things to different people. ‘My Sligo’ is a clever initiative from tourism network South and West Sligo launched on 10th April 2018. My Sligo invites people to upload their photos or videos online saying what ‘My Sligo’ means to them and using the hashtag #MySligo so everyone can find the videos and enjoy them. Every video or photo uploaded using that hashtag can be seen all over the world – people in Sligo, in Ireland, the Diaspora can join in. It’s a great way to celebrate the scenery, sights and diversity of this incredible county. Kickstarting the campaign is a dramatic short video from Lothar Muschketat of Eagles Flying in Ballymote. Unsurprisingly, it’s birds of prey and wildlife which float his boat and his video is a dramatic swoop by Linda the eagle, as she dives towards his leather clad arm. “Birds of Prey have been part of my life since I was a teenager – I just love them”, said Lothar who has lived in Sligo for almost 20 years, ‘My Sligo’ is all about introducing this wonderful, fascinating world to other people”. Do you live for golf on one of the superb courses around the county? Is it cycling on quiet country roads or cantering your horse down the beach? It could be organic gardening, the heritage and history of Carrowkeel or the Caves of Keash ... the sky is quite literally, the limit. If you are on social media, you are invited to take a photo or make a short video and say what ‘My Sligo’ means to you. It can be uploaded on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and as long as the hashtag #MySligo is used, People can find it and share it with the world. What a wonderful way to let everyone know the amazing variety within this compact county. What is your Sligo? Food, fishing or football? Sailing, SUPping or surfing on the Wild Atlantic Way? Maybe cycling, climbing or crafts. Whatever it is, this is your chance to share it. #MySligo.

Climbing Croagh Patrick walking backwards was no joke
F
OR most of us, the task of climbing Croagh Patrick may seem daunting at the best of times. To climb it walking backwards is another thing. That is what Westport councillor Brendan Mulroy and fellow Westport man Sean Quirke achieved on Good Friday. It started off as a joke about Mayo winning the All-Ireland last September but it became a
reality when the two Westport men achieved their objective – reaching the summit by waling backwards. The men set out at the foot of the Reek at 7am on Good Friday and while at all times facing Clew Bay, they managed to reach the summit some three hours later. “It was very difficult,” Brendan admitted after successfully
completing the climb. “The body is very sore but otherwise it went very well and was enjoyable. The toughest part was at the cone which was really difficult and physically very challenging.” Regular updates and videos of the climb were shared on Brendan Mulroy’s Facebook page during the climb. The two men were accompanied by eight others who acted as their support and took turns to walk in front of them, and with the help of a walking stick, they guided them up the mountain. They were Shane Moran, John Walshe, Alan Mulroy, Kieran Lally, Michael Killeen, Kenneth Lavelle, Danny Coughlin and Declan Ryan. Cllr Mulroy, who is also a care assistant with Western Care, said that without their help and support, they would not have
been able to complete the task and both himself and Seán appreciated all their help. The idea of walking up the Reek backwards originated back in September when Cllr Mulroy said he would take up the challenge if Mayo won the AllIreland. “There was a lot of banter online at the time with Dublin supporters but sadly Mayo did not win. Despite that we decided to hold out on it and do the challenge anyway and make it a fundraiser for Mayo Mountain Rescue. We just had to get the right support and logistics in order and once we did that, we decided to do it,” he said. Donations for Mayo Mountain Rescue can be made by clinking on a link on Brendan Mulroy’s Facebook page.

I
reland has an abysmal record in the care of the 12,000 people diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease and compares very badly with the rest of the West of Europe. This was stated by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she addressed a protest meeting organised by the Parkinsons Association of Ireland at Leinster House on Friday, March 30th. A number of members from Co. Mayo Parkinsons Association attended the protest. While western European countries had a target of four Parkinsons Nurse Specialists for every
500 patients, Ireland had a total of just five Nurse Specialists, with four positions filled at present, to service 12,000 patients, she said. For every patient diagnosed with Parkinsons, early diagnosis coupled with appropriate medication was crucial to limiting the severity of symptoms and helping to maintain a reasonable quality of life for them, she emphasised. “Today I spoke to Parkinsons patients from all over Ireland, and their carers, and I was shocked to hear of their neglect by the Department of Heath”, she said. In the absence of any
government funding it was left to voluntary fundraising to provide the vital safety net for so many Parkinsons sufferers, she stressed. “As a member of the Parkinsons Support Group in the European Parliament I am fully aware of how Ireland falls down on service provision and I will continue to try to ensure that programmes like Horizon 2020 will respond in a positive way to the research and treatment initiatives required to deliver the specialist needs of Parkinsons patients”, Marian Harkin MEP concluded.

RISH Rail have announced they will review their security arrangements on trains following two separate incidents on the Westport to Dublin service last week which resulted in people being arrested. On Thursday evening of last week the Dublin to Westport train was delayed by 95 minutes at Claremorris after a man allegedly assaulted a female and the train driver. The incident occurred when the train driver responded after the communication button was pressed by a distressed teenage girl. The male passenger, who is in his 30s,
is alleged to have punched the train driver in the face and it is understood that passengers had to intervene. The man was arrested and later taken to the Mayo Adult Mental Health Unit. The driver was the only member of staff on the train at the time and was later brought to Mayo University Hospital for treatment. A second incident occurred on Saturday evening when four men in their 20s were arrested at Sallins train station after they were involved in an incident on the Westport to Dublin train. It is understood a fight broke out on the train after the service stopped
at Tullamore and at least one person was injured. Two of the men were charged with public order offences while the two others were remanded in custody to appear in court in Naas. Following the two incidents, Jane Cregan of Irish Rail said the company was reviewing security on Intercity train services. She added they were currently in the process of recruiting onboard customer service agents for intercity services, and they hope to have an agent on each intercity service within months. Her statement came after some criticism of Irish Rail by a local councillor.

Investment in heritage sites a boost along Wild Atlantic Way Fáilte Ireland, in partnership with the Office of Public Works (OPW), last week announced a major investment of €4.3 million in four key heritage sites along the Wild Atlantic Way, which will enhance the visitor experiences at
Carrowmore Megalithic Tomb
each location. Three of these are based in Sligo, Mayo and Galway. The investment, which forms part of Fáilte Ireland’s strategic partnership with the OPW, will significantly enhance the visitor experience and
views at key locations, with new exhibitions and major upgrades. Fáilte Ireland is providing up to 75% of the funding for the projects from its Capital Grants budget, with the remainder of the funding being provided by the OPW. The four heritage sites to benefit from this investment are: Carrowmore in Sligo (Total investment of €350,000 with Fáilte Ireland grant support of €262,500); Blasket Island Visitor Centre in Kerry (Total investment of €2.25 million with Fáilte Ireland grant support of €1.69 million); Céide Fields in Mayo (Total investment of €1.15 million with Fáilte Ireland grant support of €862,000); Inis Mór in the Aran Islands, Galway (Total investment of €600,000 with Fáilte Ireland grant support of
€450,000). The visitor exhibition at Carrowmore in Sligo will be improved and updated with information about the monuments at Carrowmore, as well as the nearby ancient sites at Knocknarea and Carrowkeel. This will enable visitors to use the Carrowmore Centre as a hub to explore the archaeology of the area. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin T.D., visited the Blasket Island Visitor Centre recently to see firsthand the way in which the new signature viewing point will transform the site. He said: “We are very lucky in Ireland to have such breath-taking natural scenery and heritage, and the Blasket Islands, Céide Fields, Inis Mór and Carrowmore are some of the finest examples of this.

S the 82nd US Masters winds up in Augusta, Tourism Ireland launches its latest golf campaign in the United States. It includes a 30-second ad, which features Enniscrone Golf Club, which will air to an estimated 6.5 million households over the coming days on the hugely popular NBC Golf Channel. And, a further 1.2 million people will see messages about golf in Ireland online, on golfchannel.com. Tourism Ireland aims to build on its successful ‘Home of Champions’ campaign, reminding golfers across the US about our fantastic golf courses
where our champions – including Rory McIlroy, Pádraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell and Darren Clarke – honed and perfected their skills. This evening (5 April), Tourism Ireland will host its annual ‘Meet the Irish’ media event at the US Masters – highlighting our worldclass golf to influential golf journalists from right around the United States. Key messages will include the fact that Ballyliffin is home to the 2018 Irish Open and that Royal Portrush will host The Open in 2019. To view Tourism Ireland’s new TV ad, click here. The ad will also air in the US
later this year, around other Major championships and around relevant TV shows. Promoting golf holidays on the island of Ireland is a major focus for Tourism Ireland in the United States. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “Tourism Ireland has an extensive marketing programme under way this year, to highlight our world-class golf and encourage more Americans to consider a golfing vacation in Sligo and Ireland. Our message is that Ireland offers American golfers the complete package – with some of the very best links golf in the world, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes. “Tourism Ireland has prioritised North America for 2018, as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. Our aim is to deliver a +5% increase in visitor numbers and +7% increase in revenue from North America this year. A number of factors are working in our favour, including more airline seats than ever before from the US, as well as the strength and competitiveness of the vacation experience right around the island of Ireland. Tourism Ireland is also promoting our superb golf courses on Ireland.com and through social media. The organisation has invited influential American golf writers to visit the island of Ireland this year; and had a significant presence at the PGA Show, earlier this year in Orlando.

The Glens Centre is delighted to present Green & Blue by Kabosh Theatre Company which explores painful and humorous realities faced by the individuals who patrolled the border during the conflict in and about Northern Ireland. Based on an oral archive of RUC and An Garda Síochána officers, the
production fuses theatre and film to look at the person behind the uniform. After the one-hour performance there will be an opportunity to engage with the Playwright Laurence McKeown and Director Paula McFetridge about the play. “At one point we took on a role that
became an identity and that identity now defines us. We’re a uniform, not real people”. The Green and Blue performance takes place in Kiltyclogher Holiday Centre, Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim, on Tuesday, 17th April. at 7.30 p.m. and an event not to be missed.

re Galway the next big deal? We’ll find out as the summer progresses, though it shouldn’t be all about winning or losing for them. They need to put in a performance against a top team in Croke Park, something they have failed miserably at in the past, last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final against Kerry a prime example. They’ve had a soft centre for a decade or more now and it’s time they dispelled that perception of them for good. Kevin Walsh and Paddy Tally are trying to instil a bit of steel and seem to
GALWAY INFO:
have built a sound defensive structure. The Tribe were a shambles at the back for too long. They’ve found a reliable full-back in Sean Andy O Ceallaigh while Gareth Bradshaw is doing what a centre-back should do first and foremost – defend. They’ve a solid midfield and lots of exciting talent up front, with the decision to make Damien Comer captain one of the best Walsh has made. Shane Walsh is one of the most electrifying forwards around but he needs to lose the rawness that dogs his game. He lacks the composure of the very top forwards, particularly in and around
the scoring zone. Worryingly, he is repeating the same mistakes and undoing brilliant build-up play all too often. He needs to work on his decisionmaking and just pop the scores. The connacht championship is the ideal platform for him to go and do that. Galway need to keep the errors to a minimum. Kevin Walsh is in a nice position going into this game, having made seven changes for the last meeting a fortnight ago while still earning a draw. He got game time into players to keep the panel happy and didn’t show his hand.
Manager: Kevin Walsh 2017 form: Winning Division Two of the Allianz Football League offers encouragement. Galway’s Championship form, though, was mixed. Victories over Mayo and Donegal illustrated Galway’s potential. Defeats to Roscommon and Kerry supplied a reminder of the distance that still must be travelled. Player to watch: Sean Andy O’Ceallaigh A masterful performance in the All Ireland Under 21 Final loss to Dublin means the emergence of Sean Andy O’Ceallaigh will be monitored with interest. Other members of that team such as Peter Cooke, Sean Kelly, and Robert Finnerty may also be afforded game time in the League. 2018 prospects: Having fought so hard to return to Division One Galway they cemented their status at the top tier which was their initial target. They palyed well in the final against the dubs so should be able to take a lot of positives into the first game against Mayo For the past two campaigns Galway have reached the All Ireland Quarter-Final stage. Another Connacht Championship clash with Mayo beckons in May. It will be a revealing encounter for both teams.

Brian Talty admits he was disappointed to miss out on Galway top job in 2004 Talty, a six-time Connacht Championship winner with Galway, was interviewed for the post after John O’Mahony stepped down in 2004 Brian Talty has admitted his disappointment at not getting a shot at managing Galway. Talty, a six-time Connacht Championship winner with Galway, was interviewed for the post after John O’Mahony stepped down in 2004 having built a decent reputation in coaching circles in Dublin, the highlight being guiding St Sylvester’s to what remains their only county title in 1996. However, he was passed over and shortly afterwards linked up with the Dublin senior management team under Paul Caffrey. He explained: “I was coaching in Dublin and coached a few teams that won championships and stuff like that. I was a qualified PE teacher which is the S&Cs of today, if you know what I mean. “They gave it to Peter Ford so I wasn’t overly happy that it was given to another Mayo man again! “Maybe they thought they’d continue that and continue being successful but after that then I just lost interest and got over it. “It was a lot of travelling to be done at that stage and I had a young family as well so I didn’t go for it after that. “That was disappointing, I have to say. “I was interviewed by people who had been at county board level when you were playing yourself and knew the kind of commitment that you gave to play as well but lookit, that was it then.” Although Galway won an All-Ireland under-21 title and a Connacht Championship in Ford’s first year, his reign didn’t go down as a particularly successful one and years of mediocrity followed amid several managerial changes.
Mayo-Galway clash expected to be a sellout Next month’s eagerly-awaited Connacht SFC quarter-final between Mayo and Galway is expected to test Elvery’s MacHale Park’s capacity. Galway’s surprise run to the Allianz Football League final last month has swelled interest in the tie, which is heading for a 28,000 sellout. The 2017 and 2016 championship meetings of the old rivals drews crowds of 22,046 and 21,784 respectively, but those figures will be surpassed this year based on ticket demand. “There’s always big interest in Mayo against Galway, but it’s even bigger than usual this year. People are expecting it to be a great contest, especially after Galway doing so well in the league and running Dublin close,” Connacht Council secretary John Prenty told the Irish Independent.

Northwest Express April, 2018 LEITRIM INFO:
Manager: Brendan Guckian 2017 form: Won four and lost three in the League, but Leitrim weren’t ever in serious promotion contention. In the summer London caused Leitrim some problems, but the visitors pulled through. Roscommon were too potent and powerful and Carlow then ended Leitrim’s campaign on July 8 at Netwatch Cullen Park. Player to watch: Ronan Kennedy Ronan Kennedy was prominent in Leitrim’s three Championship matches in 2017. Kennedy is an accurate attacker, who Leitrim will be looking to for inspiration. Leitrim introduced a raft of players to the senior arena in 2017 and they will be hoping to develop further in the League. 2018 prospects: The League carries huge significance for Leitrim and Brendan Guckian carried out some impressive work. eitrim manager Brendan Guckian has revealed that their full focus is now on the Connacht SFC opener against New York in four weeks’ time. Following an abrupt conclusion to their NFL 4 campaign, which saw them finish on a high after they defeated Wicklow, Leitrim can now firmly focus on their clash with the Exiles in the Big Apple. New York have produced some decent performances in recent times and Guckian will only be too well aware of that. He recently spoke to the
Leitrim Observer about how the preparation will go over the coming weeks. “Six weeks to New York. They have three weekends in a row with their clubs, which is great because they will be getting game time,” said Guckian. “It will freshen them up as well, getting back with their clubs, they will obviously be training with us during the week. “But they are getting game time and then we will obviously be looking at one or two challenges in the lead up to New York. I think the performance
against Limerick was good and the performance against Wicklow, we started slowly, but again, when we went at Wicklow, we played very well. “We’ll have to rely on challenges going forward and for the next three weekends, the lads are involved with their clubs and we’ll be encouraging them to perform as best as they can with their clubs because obviously it is important that they get game time, whether it is with their clubs or with us, it is very important that they get game time.”

Manager: Cathal Corey 2017 form: Sligo narrowly lost a gripping Connacht Under 21 final and they were quietly confident about making a summer impact. Mayo proved too strong for the Yeatsmen before Sligo recovered to defeat Antrim. Meath, though, shaded what proved to be Niall Carew’s last game in charge by 0-14 to 1-9. Player to watch: Kevin McDonnell On the comeback trail from injury Kevin McDonnell, still a student in NUIG, has been afforded the Sligo captaincy by new manager Cathal Corey. Gerald O’Kelly-Lynch and Kyle Cawley are other footballers with serious potential. 2018 prospects: It will be interesting to see how Sligo fare under the highly rated coach Cathal Corey. Attaining Division Two status was a bridge too far and in the end they were lucky to stay in Division 3, which was very strong this year Sligo face a trip to London in the Championship and considering Ciaran Deely’s charges have seven home matches in the League this year that could be be a dangerous game

ondon held off a late Sligo fightback to knock the Yeats County out of the Connacht Championship and secure a first win in the province in 36 years. Lorcan Mulvey’s goal put London on the way to a famous win in the first half as a slack and wasteful Sligo side trailed by four at the break. Padraig McGoldrick, a Sligo-man that missed a penalty in the first half for the home side, was sent off to give Kevin Walsh’s side hope early in the second period. Sligo battled back to within a point but when they struck the crossbar in the final minute of added-time, it meant London secured a shock 1-12 to 0-14 win to set up a semi-final meeting with Leitrim. It is London’s first provincial triumph since a 1977 win over Leitrim, the same county they will face in a Connacht semi-final on Sunday, June 23. The visitors actually opened the scoring with just 30 seconds on the clock when a shot from Adrian Marren was pushed over the crossbar by London goalkeeper Declan Traynor. However, it was the 20th minute before Sligo scored again. Mark Gottsche levelled the sides with a free from 50 yards out, before London found the net in the 13th minute to move into a lead that they would never relinquish. After some good work by Greg Crowley, Ciaran McCallion surged through the Sligo defence before offloading to former Cavan player Lorcan Mulvey, who finished neatly beyond Philip Greene in the Sligo goal. Marren finally broke Sligo’s barren spell and Mark Breheny added another point from a free with 23 minutes on the clock, after which Gottsche put London back into a five-point lead with a ‘45’. London had former Sligo player Padraig McGoldrick at corner forward, but he had an afternoon to forget. After Greg
ligo U21 captain in 2017, Darragh Cummins played a key role in the team’s run to their first Connacht final since 2012 last year. He posted four points in a man-of-thematch display from midfield in the semi-final win over Roscommon, but Sligo were well-beaten by Galway in the final. Cummins was a talented rugby player in his teens and spent five years playing with Connacht’s underage teams as a powerful inside centre. He even featured for Ireland at U18s, but the lure of the Sligo jersey saw him turn his back on the oval ball in favour of Gaelic football. Cummins made his mark with DCU in the Sigerson Cup campaign, while new Sligo boss Cathal Corey handed him his senior debut in the league campaign.

Sligo manager Cathal Corey admits that retaining their NFL 3 status for another year is a massive relief to the county. With Offaly defeating Westmeath, it was a case of the loser being relegated in the clash between Sligo and Derry at Markievicz Park. The Yeats County arguably produced their best performance of the year so far to claim the coveted two points and thus preserved their status in the league’s third year, while sending Derry down to Division Four for the 2019 campaign. Corey was more concerned about his own troops and he told the Sligo Champion that staying in Division Three is a huge boost to them ahead of the Connacht SFC. “We’re over the moon,” he enthused. “We probably would have felt a bit of pressure coming into this one. It’s my first year involved with Sligo and you don’t want to be relegated in your first year. “We knew coming into this game that at the end of the day, we had to win. Derry are a really strong side and they knew they needed to win too, which made it a bit of a dog fight. But it was a great game of football and thankfully we came out the best.” He added: “The confidence around the table is a lot better now. It would have been hard to go back to training had we been relegated. So now the pressure is off you’d like to think the atmosphere will be better going into the London game

Crowley was brought down by Philip Greene, the Sligo goalkeeper made amends by saving McGoldrick’s penalty. Breheny and ex-London defender Charlie Harrison added to Sligo’s tally either side of a Cathal McGee point to leave the visitors trailing by 1-06 to 005 at the interval. In perfect conditions for Championship football at Rusilip, the breeze behind Sligo in the second half was not strong enough to be a decisive factor and they fell further behind through an early McGoldrick free. Breheny hit back for Sligo but London again began to pull away, kicking three without reply – from McGee, Gottsche and Barry Mitchell – to lead by 1-10 to 0-06. But Sligo were thrown a lifeline 15 minutes into the second period when McGoldrick was given his marching orders after being shown a second yellow card for a foul on Neil Ewing. McGoldrick’s dismissal eventually sprung Sligo to life and they hit eight points in the final 17 minutes – two from Harrison, three from Tony Taylor, one each from Breheny and Pat Hughes, as well as an outstanding effort from substitute Niall Murphy. Gavin’s dominance, both Dublin and Mayo know that and you’d have to think that even Kerry should know it too after they were outplayed twice in Croke Park by the men from the west in last year’s semi-final. But the bookmakers have Stephen Rochford’s charges out in third to win the All-Ireland, a significant way behind Kerry’s chances, according to Paddy Power.

Northwest Express April, 2018 MAYO INFO Manager: Stephen Rochford 2017 form: Another drama filled and epic Championship adventure. Mayo overcame Sligo and then responded to the loss against Galway by beating Derry, Clare, and Cork in the Qualifiers. Roscommon and Kerry were outfoxed
following replays. A substantial display was delivered in the All Ireland Final, but Dublin still survived. Player to watch: Conor Loftus The splendid goal and contribution against Derry showcased Loftus’ considerable ability. A cool
Mayo Under 21 outfit won the 2016 All Ireland with Diarmuid O’Connor and Stephen Coen already making an impact from that outfit. Some other members of that panel will be afforded opportunities in the FBD League. 2018 prospects: When the Championship reaches the
Croke Park stage Mayo can deliver. The awkward early assignments can be troublesome as Galway punished their neighbours twice in 2016 and 2017. It mightn’t be at the very top of the priority list, but Mayo will still want to sample glory out west once again with Galway and Roscommon stirring.

Best Wishes to the Mayo Team from all at Cafollas
The Might of Mayo Mayo were lucky to stay in division one with a late point by Kevin McLoughlin. Further on, the chance to win the Connacht title needs to be taken in order to avoid facing the qualifier circuit for a third successive year. They survived it twice but a third attempt might be too much.
Strengths If resilience won All-Ireland titles, Mayo, rather than Dublin, would probably be bidding for a four-in-a-row. Predictions of their demise flourished when Galway beat them in the 2016 Connacht semi-final in Castlebar and resurfaced when they suffered a similar setback in Pearse Stadium last year. Yet, in both years, they recovered and reached the All-Ireland final, twice losing by a point and also drawing with Dublin. Their capacity to remain stubbornly defiant after suffering so much misery is a massive strength. Weakness. Kerry are integrating youngsters into their team so why can’t Mayo? Up to this year at least, the longestablished players have been sure of retaining their places because the younger generation weren’t good enough to oust them. That’s not healthy. Mayo have rightly received lots of credit for their durability but the fact remains they have no title to show since 2015 (Connacht) and are relying essentially on most of the same players. Also, their failure to close out the All-Ireland deal can’t help their state of mind.
opportunity to make a statement? Winning the Allianz League title would have been a significant boost, banishing the perception that, for whatever reason, they cannot win finals. In the end though Dublin have won the league and
Threats The threat level comes in two strands. Galway have beaten them in the last two years so they will head for Castlebar on May 13 with a confident mindset. If Mayo lose to Galway, it would take nine games to win the All-Ireland. Granted, they reached the final via the long route over the past two years but it would be asking an awful lot to do for a third time. If Mayo win Connacht, the on-field threats will be same as in other years, only heightened by the psychological dimension, arising from having lost so many finals.

McStay feels Rossies will improve
R
oscommon manager Kevin McStay is confident that the best is yet to come from his charges. The Rossies lifted national silverware last Sunday afternoon when they defeated Cavan in a pulsating NFL 2 final that was end to end and gave reason to believe that there was some hope for the future of the
game. Speaking to the Westmeath Independent, McStay believes that better ground will suit his players as preparations turn to the Connacht senior football championship. “We’ve a lot of good footballers in our squad and I think as the weather improves and the ground hardens, we will improve with it,” stated McStay. “We’re not naïve about the
championship and we understand the way the game is played as well, but we’ve work to do. It’s great we got promoted, we won the league, we have the cup and we still have tons to work on.” Roscommon will be favourites to see off either New York or Leitrim in the Connacht SFC semi-final which is scheduled for Saturday, May 26th.

Northwest Express April, 2018 ROSCOMMON INFO:
Manager: Kevin McStay 2017 form: The Allianz Football League brought relegation and pain before the pleasure of securing a Connacht title. Winning the provincial title was a significant boost for Roscommon. The subsequent All Ireland Quarter-Final replay defeat to Mayo hurt, but Roscommon tasted two Championship days at Croke Park. Player to watch: Diarmuid Murtagh There has been no shortage of budding talent in Roscommon in recent years. Several exciting forwards have been unearthed, but Diarmuid Murtagh showed signs of his class last year. Murtagh remains a smooth finisher. 2018 prospects: Roscommon will feel that reaching the last eight is an attainable target once more. Having won Division Two of the Allianz Football League they will feel that the team are maturing as a unit. An interesting campaign awaits.
5 things we learned from 2018 NFL Roscommon’s lethal attack Roscommon forwards are now among the best in the game. They put up some huge totals in the league this year and added another 4-16 in the final. To be able to call on players of the quality of Cathal Cregg, Enda Smith, Fintan Cregg and Shane Killoran off the bench is an indication that Roscommon’s strength in depth up front is impressive by any standard. The form of Niall Kilroy, Conor Devaney, the Murtaghs and Donie Smith has been outstanding and Ciarán Lennon is developing as a top class target
man all the time. Defensive woes There have been some good displays but any team who succeeded in running straight at the Roscommon defence at pace found that there were gaps. In the championship good teams are at full fitness and always have pace. It’s something that Kevin McStay and his management team will have to sort out. Roscommon panel strength The last time Roscommon were in
BEST WISHES TO ROSCOMMON FROM
Division One the lack of strength depth caught them out and the huge effort they put in to do well in the league meant that the team was burnt out when it came to the championship. Now there are up to 30 players who are capable of pulling on the county jersey at senior level and that will be needed if Roscommon want to stay in the top division and be competitive in the championship. Connacht football is strong When was the last time that three Connacht teams were in Division
One of the league? Football in the province is going through a really good spell. Mayo showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with as they survived in Division One once more. There is a renewed fire in Galway’s belly. The way they put it up to Dublin last Sunday in the Division One final will give them great hope and belief. The forthcoming Connacht championship will be one of the most hard fought in many years. The Galway v Mayo game on May 13th will be a thunderous affair.

Liam Irwin in action for London against Waterford at McGovern Park by Damian Dolan
L
iam Irwin is used to expectation. A two-time All Ireland winner with Mayo, at U21 and Minor, the forward announced himself for London by scoring a point with his very first touch for the Exiles. It almost went unnoticed amidst the disappointment of London’s defeat to Waterford. But the way Irwin cut inside, bouncing off one Waterford challenger, before firing over instinctively, will no doubt have struck a chord with Mayo and Breaffy GAA fans alike. It should come as no surprise he’s
taken little time to settle into London life after transferring to North London Shamrocks two months ago. Born in Greenford, West London, Irwin has family living in Ruislip, Hounslow and Greenford. His parents lived in London for 20 years before moving back to Mayo when he was a year and a half old. “It was always in my mind to move here at some stage,” Irwin told the Irish World. “I’d always thought about going to London because of my family over here…..I can relate to it. “I just didn’t think it would happen so quickly. It’s flown by and I’m
enjoying every minute of it.” Irwin’s 2-2 in the 2016 All Ireland U21 final helped Mayo to lift the Clarke Cup for the first time in ten years, but he certainly doesn’t seem like a man carrying the weight of being an All Ireland winner. “I don’t get worked up over pressure - you thrive off it. I wouldn’t look at articles. It’s nice for the family to look at back in Mayo, but I wouldn’t feel any added pressure,” he added. “I’m just another one of the lads, and there are guys there who are definitely showing me up in training. I have to work harder.

Northwest Express April, 2018 LONDON INFO:
Manager: Ciaran Deely 2017 form: It was a strange League campaign for London, who played all seven matches away from home due to the redevelopment of McGovern Park in Ruislip. London only secured one win in the competition, but Ciaran Deely’s charges produced two gutsy Championship displays. Leitrim and Carlow, though, both left Ruislip with victories. Player to watch: Liam Gavaghan An eight point haul, including five from play, against Leitrim underlined Liam Gavaghan’s importance to the London cause. London are eager to develop homegrown talent with Philip Butler and Gavaghan now established inter-county players. 2018 prospects: London were enthused about the fact that all of their League games were at home at McGovern Park in Ruislip. Ciaran Deely is carrying out good work in London and will be excited to be facing Sligo on May 6. This will be another important day for London.
“Obviously Mayo are at the top end, but there are quality players here. I’ve learnt a lot in the last few weeks.” Having made the breakthrough into
the Mayo senior panel during last year’s National League, his omission from Stephen Rochford’s championship panel raised an eyebrow or two. “I was disappointed, but the standard is seriously high. Especially for guys trying to break through,” he said. “Maybe I just wasn’t ready for it. I thought I might have been ready for it this Christmas, but I didn’t get the call. Life goes on. “I’m happy to still be playing intercounty level albeit not for Mayo. I’m playing football at the highest level I can and I’m happy enough with that.” Irwin watched on as his Mayo teammates went on to lose to Dublin by a point, and having exited the Mayo club championship with Breaffy
at the quarter-final stage, thoughts began to turn to London. “I was hoping like every other lad around Mayo that I might get a shout in November or December. It didn’t come and you have to be man enough to deal with that,” said Irwin. “I felt my chances of playing for Mayo in 2018 were gone.” He added: “It wasn’t a decision I had to make. It was February and I hadn’t got a call. It wasn’t me that made the decision. “I definitely wouldn’t rule out playing for Mayo again someday, but if the guys went on and won [the All Ireland] it I’d be delighted for them.” For Irwin the target is Sligo on May 6 at McGovern Park, and should the Exiles prevail a semi-final with the winners of Galway and his native Mayo.
London’s McMahon in Sligo fitness race by Damian Dolan London senior footballer Fearghal McMahon will see one of Europe’s top shoulder specialists in Dublin in a

defeat to Waterford on March 25 in Ruislip, as London pressed for a late equalising goal. McMahon suffered a strain of the acromioclavicular joint of the shoulder, the normal rehab time for which is 8-12 weeks. The former Monaghan U21 star, who has transferred to St Brendan’s from Monaghan Harps, has impressed in his four National League appearances for London and would be a loss for Ciaran Deely’s side. “We are not confident at this stage that Fearghal will be fit to play Sligo,” Deely told the Irish World. “But myself and the medical team will be doing everything possible to give him every opportunity to be ready for Sligo.” He racked up three points on his debut to help London to victory over Wicklow, and followed that with a 1-1, including a penalty, in the dramatic draw with Limerick. He added two points against Antrim, and three in the loss to Waterford. McMahon won Ulster titles with Monaghan at Under 21 and Minor.

Do Not Panic! Breathing Techniques Can Help You Exercise
I
f you've got chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it's more important than ever to get some exercise—it can save your lung function and slow down the progression of COPD. The
problem? The shortness of breath that comes with exertion can make it tempting to move less than you did before. This sets up a vicious cycle: shortness of breath leads to inactivity, which leads to a decline in fitness, which leads to further shortness of breath and inactivity. To get out of the rut, Michael Berry,
Mon-Thu 9.00 - 6.00pm Fri 9.00 - 5pm Home and hospital visits catered for Garden/Tone St, Ballina Tel: 096-72189 087-6389500 email: begley.john2@gmail.com
PhD, chair of the department of health and exercise science at Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, N.C., recommends walking, stationary biking, and elliptical training. They work well for people with COPD, but strength and resistance training are playing an increasing role in patients’ regimens. As we age, people—particularly those over the age of 60—lose muscle fibers, according to Berry. Healthy people lose fast-twitch muscles, which are used for short bursts of energy. But individuals with COPD tend to lose slowtwitch muscles, which are used for endurance activities as well. Weight training helps to improve skeletal muscle function so patients can remain active longer. Exercise of the lower legs—frequently walking or cycling—is the main focus of any organized exercise program for COPD, says Gail Weinmann, MD, the deputy director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s Division of Lung Diseases, but exercising the upper arms through resistance training is also helpful. (Like anyone starting an exercise program, a person with COPD should be cleared for exercise by a health care provider, Dr. Weinmann cautions.) If you have COPD, another advantage of exercising the respiratory system is to learn how to cope with the panic that can occur with shortness of breath. “I have heard it described as when someone is hit in the stomach and can’t get their breath,” Berry says. “Exercise teaches people how to deal with that sensation, to work through it. They

know they are going to get up the steps, and they will get short of breath, but now they know, ‘I’m not going to keel over and die.’” Breathing techniques can fight panicky feelings Mike McBride, a COPD patient from Arvada, Colo., who racewalks with oxygen in tow, says the first time he walked around his neighborhood for exercise, he thought he was going to have to call someone to pick him up. Over the years he has had setbacks and has learned his limits, but he continues to exercise at the gym and walks at least three times a week. “Learning to deal with the panic is the first thing to get past,” McBride says. Respiratory therapists offer two common breathing techniques: pursed lip and diaphragm breathing. Pursed lip breathing is performed by inhaling through the nose and then exhaling through pursed lips (as if one is going to whistle). The exhale should be longer than the inhale, but air should not be forced out. This breathing helps people relax and reduces the amount of air
trapped in the lungs. Diaphragm breathing helps to strengthen this important muscle and is accomplished by lying on one’s back with knees bent and making the stomach, rather than the chest, move out while inhaling and in while exhaling. Patients are typically introduced to breathing exercises only when they visit a respiratory therapist or participate in a pulmonary rehabilitation program, Berry says, mainly because timecrunched primary care physicians focus on exercise and smoking cessation. McBride’s insurance would not pay for respiratory therapy, so he utilized breathing techniques he learned during Lamaze classes years ago. He visualizes wringing out a towel when he starts to panic and concentrates on breathing out twice as long as he breathes in. “A lot of people don’t want to do anything because they are afraid of getting short of breath," he says. "It doesn’t scare me anymore because I have had enough experience with the distress part.”

‘The Shelly River Chorus’
The Shelly River Chorus started serious preparation in March for the first ever World Mixed Barbershop Chorus Contest in Munich at Easter. Having competed, for the first time, in a Mixed Barbershop Chorus Contest in Cork in October, the Shelly River Chorus, made up of members of the two Sligo Barbershop Choruses, Tone Cold Sober and No Half Measures, were delighted to discover that their score and performance qualified them to
represent Ireland in the first ever World Mixed Chorus Contest at the Munich Barbershop Musikfest. Twenty three members are registered for the event in Munich and their rehearsal venue is the Embassy Rooms courtesy of Kevin Quinn Shelly River Chorus will be ambassadors for Sligo, representing the best of volunteerism, culture, community and the spirit of our region at a major world music event.

Thurs 10 May, 8pm €15/7.50 u18s The Hawk’s Well Theatre Ten years on from their celebrated debut album, Music from the Atlantic Fringe, The Unwanted returns with Pay Day, a collection of songs and tunes showing that their time has been well spent, continuing to comb the varied shores of the Atlantic for musical treasures. Pay Day offers a selection of gems including polkas from Sligo,
fiddle tunes from the Appalachian Mountains, a traveller song, a child ballad, blues from the Deep South and even a song from Irish blues/rock hero, Rory Gallagher. All interpreted and performed by three musicians who each have spent a lifetime honing their craft and pursuing the music they love, no matter where it comes from. This is an album from the heart that speaks to the heart and is, in itself, a pay day of the richest kind.

DANCE BLASY PRESENTS “MOVE IN SYNC
Michael’s left testicle when he was a teenager. That’s more than a can of coke. He should have told someone sooner, but who could he turn to? His dad died ten years ago and besides, school is full of rumours about what the giant bulge in his trousers actually is. Who wants to stop that?
Friday 27th, Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th April, 8pm This is certainly an event to look forward to. After the success of last year’s sold- out musical, Tracy’s Fame, Danceblast are going to showcase more of their talented students’ material that they have been working on over the past couple of months. This show will be full of surprises and is guaranteed to be a great night’s entertainment for both the young and old. Come along to join in the fun! Tickets: €12 (adults), €7 (children). Early booking advised.
