T
HERE has been considerable excitement in Mayo and across the North-west following the announcement last week that Pope Francis will visit Knock Shrine on Sunday, August 26th, as part of his visit to Ireland. Pope Francis will arrive into Ireland West Airport on a specially chartered Aer Lingus flight from Dublin on Sunday morning from Dublin and travel by motorcade the 20-kilometre route along the N17 to Knock Shrine. As part of his visit he will say prayers at the Apparition Chapel and return shortly before noon to Dublin via Ireland West Airport. Latest reports indicate he will spend approx. 90 minutes in Knock. 43,000 tickets will be made available free of charge on line from June 25th to provide access to the grounds. Apart from this there will be no other opportunity for the public to meet Pope Francis. Major preparatory work will take place in Knock village over the coming weeks and a large Garda presence is expected around the area in the lead-up to the pope’s visit. Major traffic restrictions will be imposed. Since the event will be the subject of world-wide focus it will provide a major boost for both the shrine and Knock International Airport. As most of us recall it was following the first ever Papal visit to Ireland in 1979, when Pope John Paul II visited Knock Marian Shrine, that Monsignor Horan began his campaign to build an international airport in Mayo close to the Shrine. 39 Years later the airport is now the fourth busiest in the country and with record passenger numbers of close to 800,000 expected this year it’s a fitting tribute to his legacy that the airport will welcome Pope Francis this year. Ballina to come alive in September with “Other Voices”
O
n Friday September 28th and Saturday September 29th, 2018, the vibrant town of Ballina will provide a stunning backdrop to Other Voices, the internationally acclaimed music television series and arts festival, which has travelled countless roads over the past 17 years. From Dingle to Derry, New York to Belfast, Texas to London, Berlin and beyond, Ballina joins the global network of towns and cities that map the rich and diverse musical journey of Other Voices. At the end of September, the Mayo town will explode into life with song, story, conversation and debate, a weekend of live music, creative partnerships and diverse discussions with artists and speakers from across the world, joining together to raise their voices. The Other Voices live TV recordings will take place in the 250-year old St. Michael’s Church in the heart of Ballina, while the Other Voices Music Trail will run across a multitude of venues, bars, pubs and clubs throughout the town. Ireland’s Edge Ballina, an extension of Ireland’s Edge, the renowned annual culture and creativity conference, will be a mixture of debate, performance and discussion that aims to contribute to the positioning of Ireland, particularly rural Ireland, as a viable, dynamic location and environment for world leading developments in creative technology industries. Also taking place during the Other Voices Ballina weekend will be the annual Food Fleadh Ballina, hosted by Ballina Chamber of Commerce at the Old Military Quarter in
the town centre. Other Voices Executive Producer Philip King, who spoke at the launch, said: “All of us were delighted to accept the invitation to bring Other Voices to beautiful Ballina in Co. Mayo. We have strong connections with the county, Other Voices producer Tina O’Reilly is a Westport native and, in a way, producing Other Voices in Ballina is bringing it all back home for us.” The Other Voices Open Call Ballina 2018 is now accepting submissions. This year, Other Voices invite artists of all genres to submit one track to be considered for a perfor-
mance slot on the Other Voices Ballina Music Trail in September 2018. For details and submissions see www.othervoices.ie Other Voices Ballina 2018 is made possible with the support and partnership of Mayo County Council, Mayo.ie, Ballina Chamber, Mayo North, Ballina.ie, Wild Atlantic Way, Coca Cola, Ballina Arts Centre, The Jackie Clarke Collection, Music Generation Mayo and Core Music Hub. The recordings taken at Other Voices Ballina 2018 will form part of the Other Voices music TV series, which will be broadcast on RTÉ in early 2019.

Mayo resident leads publication of Loneliness Taskforce report Senator Keith Swanick, originally from Castlerea in County Roscommon but now living in Belmullet in County Mayo, from where he runs his GP practice, was the prime mover behind the Loneliness Task Force Report just published. He lives in the north Mayo town with his wife, Aislinn and son Julian. Keith is a member of the Seanad since 2016 on the cultural and education panel and is the FF spokesperson on Health and Mental Health. He has previously served as the Secretary of the National Association of Irish General Practitioners which represents 1,200 of this country’s GPs. His primary interest in politics is around community empowerment and primary healthcare. Senator Swanick says his day to day

interaction with people as a GP is the main reason behind his decision to launch the Loneliness Taskforce Report in the first place. ALONE, the organisation that supports older people living on their own in their homes, has been working with the Fianna Fail Senator and the Loneliness Taskforce to study the situation in this country and offer solutions to it. The report, launched last week, offers recommendations to government on how to deal with loneliness across all age groups and calls for an action plan to be put in place to combat the isolation felt by many people. Senator Swanick says he has seen the results of this social epidemic first hand in his GP surgery for many years now. return to the festival’s river roots, an extensive, exciting children’s programme and a nod to nostalgia, are just three of the highlights awaiting visitors to Ballina for the 54th Ballina Salmon Festival. The festival runs this year from Sunday 8th to Sunday 15th July, and with over 70 events planned over the course of the week, this year’s programme is set to excite and delight young and old, locals and visitors alike. A number of fun events for all ages will focus interest on the iconic River Moy, including a Fly Casting Open Day by the Game Angling Instructors Association in conjunction with Inland Fisheries Ireland, a three-hour exploration workshop incorporating science, fishing, water safety and more by the recently formed River Moy Trust, canoeing and stand-up kayaking workshops for older children, salmonthemed workshops in the Jackie Clarke Collection and a display on the Moy showcasing our river activities on the opening day of the festival. The much-loved Moy Swim will also resume this year and is set to attract a large participation. PRO of Ballina Salmon Festival, AnneMarie Flynn said: “Ballina Salmon Festival has always been about celebrating the people of the town and our story, and this year, we wanted to move the focus back to the River Moy, where it all began in 1964. Ballina is known as the salmon capital of Ireland, and we wanted to acknowledge our heritage and connection with the river by acknowledging our old traditions while providing new and enjoyable experiences for those attending the festival.” The children’s event committee this year has put together an incredible programme of over 50 events, designed to give children of all ages and interests something to enjoy during festival week. From film-making to first aid, children’s yoga to martial arts, sports, SUP sessions
and dance, this is the most diverse children’s offering yet. A major new musical addition to the programme this year is “Those Were the Days - A Night of Dance Hall Nostalgia” on Monday, July 9 in the Military Quarter - a night to journey back in time to the romance of the ballroom days. Staged by local Liam Brennan of Soundman Entertainment, the night will feature legendary acts like Judd and Jack Ruane of the world famous Jack Ruane Showband, PJ Duffy, The Conquerors band featuring Tony Maher and Frankie Collahan, Keith and Lorraine Showband Show, Shaun O'Dowd and Frankie McDonald. Another musical highlight will be the Hothouse 30th Anniversary Party on Friday July 13, where DJ Dermot Rice of the iconic Hothouse club night will team up with Longnecks NiteClub DJs Sean and PJ to celebrate Ballina’s halcyon club nights of the 80s and 90s. Sean Keane will also perform in
the Twin Trees hotel on Friday, July 13. Old favourites return too such as National Heritage Day, a journey back in time to an old fair day, which will once again this year feature the incredible Garda Band, A Night at the Proms, the Choral extravaganza featuring MC George Lee of RTÉ, which wowed over 600 attendees on its 2017 debut, Country and Western Night featuring an exciting guest performer and of course, the festival Mardi Gras street party and fireworks extravaganza. This year, Ballina Salmon Festival hasalso launched a new online ticketing system, allowing visitors from outside the region to access tickets to sought-after events in advance. A full festival programme and tickets will be available on www.ballinasalmonfestival.ie from this week, with new events and news added daily. Significant Yeats Portrait Exhibition at the Model
T
he Model arts centre in Sligo is the home for a special exhibition exhibition based on a number of significant portraits of the Yeats family. The portraits are on long-term loan from an anonymous collector. The collector bought the portraits at last year’s auction of paintings, drawings, prints, letters, furniture and other personal items relating to the painter John Butler Yeats and four of his children William, Jack, Lily and Lolly and William’s daughter Anne. All of the items came directly from the Yeats family. Emer McGarry, acting Director of The Model, said the collector was motivated to buy the portraits because of one painting in particular, a self-portrait by John Butler Yeats in New York, which he feared would leave the country if he did not step in. The paintings are on long-term loan to the centre, and are the focal point of the ‘Portrait of a Family’ exhibition. The anonymous donor also gifted nine model boats and a wooden storage case which belonged to Jack B Yeats. The case is unique in that it is lined with 19 watercolour drawings by Yeats. They are in need of conservation and are not currently on display. The exhibition also includes portraits from the National Gallery of Ireland and from the centre’s own Niland collection.

At 3pm, Nakupelle will keep audiences spellbound with his brilliantly funny and physical performance of The Trap; described as ' slapstick in the very best tradition of Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton' 'Innovation, Imagination and Improvisation at its best!'. Throughout the day families can enjoy mind-boggling magic by multi-award winning entertainer and magician Joel M; storytelling sessions by Wayne O'Connor; science experiments with Yvonne Lang. “Horrible” vandalism as fairy houses destroyed
V
andals were at work in Claremorris in recent weeks when extensive damage was wreaked at the award-winning Clare Lake/McMahon Park in the town The much-loved local amenity, which included beautiful “fairy houses” added recently, attracts over 4,000 visitors weekly. Many of the fairy houses were broken up and some thrown in the lake – a terrible spectacle for young children who come there to enjoy them. It is understood Gardaí have since identified those involved in the vandalism. The recently added ‘Fairy Houses’ were broken up, with many of them thrown
into the lake, making for a harrowing spectacle, particularly for young children. The ‘Fairy Houses’ were constructed with the help of several entities, including the Men’s Shed, schools, the show committee and other interested parties. Several other areas of the amenity suffered wanton vandalism, which is difficult to comprehend given the enjoyment people derive from visiting it on a weekly basis. Clare Lake/McMahon Park has been gradually upgraded to meet the demands of the situation over the years, with the committee constantly aware of the need to respond to the wishes of
the public. The amenity is used by people from near and far, many of whom make a day out of visiting the park, the newly opened MUGA pitch, and the adjacent children’s playground. The committee of Clare Lake/McMahon Park wishes to acknowledge the help they have received over the years from various politicians, councillors, Mayo County Council, and of course members of the general public who have responded when required in various ways. It will take some time to repair and replace the items that are damaged, but the committee are determined to bring the facility back to its former glory.
Ballina Fringe Festival Ballina is eagerly looking forward to a brand new festival, launched on Friday, June 15th at the Ice House, Ballina. It was officially launched by Pearse Farrell of the Ice House, main sponsor. Ballina Fringe Festival itself takes place 6-15 July 2018 in Ballina, Co. Mayo, running alongside Ballina’s famous Salmon Festival. Ballina and North Mayo have a proud heritage in the arts, and our rugged wild Atlantic landscape has provided the inspiration for countless artists through the years. Ballina Fringe Festival seeks to channel this creativity and enhance access to highquality Arts content in Ballina and
North Mayo in an ambitious, sustainable way over the coming years. 25 years after North Mayo saw the creation of Tír Sáile – the North Mayo Sculpture Trail, the largest public arts project undertaken in Ireland, the time is right to embark on a new celebration of our proud heritage. A small committee, with the support of Ballina Arts Centre, has put together a programme of carefully chosen events that will bring high quality arts content to new audiences in North Mayo. It is the ambition of the committee to develop Ballina Fringe Festival into a distinctive identity and standalone
event to be delivered outside of the peak tourism season, delivering a quality, invigorating and inspiring arts programme to new and existing audiences and enhancing our attractiveness as a region to potential visitors outside of the summer months. The committee looks forward to simultaneously welcoming visitors to this beautiful region to experience life at the edge of the Europe along the Wild Atlantic Way, providing them with memorable experiences and in the future, developing content that will help them to explore the many ways in which this magnificent, unforgiving, landscape manifests itself in the arts.

S
EVEN town centres are set to become free public wi-fi zones thanks to a unique initiative which will give locals and tourists unlimited access to speeds of up to 100mps. Included in the mix will be Westport, Knock and Sligo. Supplied by Magnet Networks and supported by local authorities and business groups, the ground-breaking scheme will also see free high-speed broadband installed in Carrick-onShannon and Monaghan with two further locations set to be announced in Kerry and Donegal. The scheme, which costs the local towns nothing, involves local businesses allowing Magnet Networks to install access points on their premises, providing seamless connectivity within the town centre. Carrick-On-Shannon was the first of the six towns to go live this weekend with Sligo, Knock and Monaghan commencing in June and the remaining towns going live by August. Each access point in the town has a 150m range, so that users will always be
in range of a high-quality signal. “The beauty of Magnet Networks’ free wi-fi is that you only need to register once, so tourists coming to different towns along the Wild Atlantic Way, for example, will automatically enjoy free connectivity at no cost in a range of towns,” said Magnet Networks CEO Mark Kellett. “As the project is financed by giving local businesses the opportunity to sponsor the wi-fi and send promotional offers, tourists can then be directed to attractions or places to eat and drink. “For example, if a local restaurant sponsored the wi-fi, they would be able to send out a coupon at a set time to everyone who has logged on that day giving them 10% off,” said Kellett. “This will be a great way for local businesses to stand out, which is particularly useful in towns such as Carrick On Shannon and Westport where there are so many options for tourists to choose from. “Magnet Networks has a strong track record in providing world-class wi-fi services to public spaces such as the
new smart city at Wembley Park in London, and events such as the NFL games at Wembley and the X Factor finals. “Our aim is to extend this service throughout Ireland, and we are asking interested towns to get in touch though wifi@magnetnetworks.com.” This initiative follows on from the success of Magnet Networks’ publicprivate partnership in Galway – the first of its kind in Ireland – which brought local businesses together to create a high-speed digital corridor from Spanish Arch to Eyre Square. Free public wi-fi by Magnet Networks has been operating in Galway City Centre for over a year now, and is an integral part of the city’s business and tourism offering. “Magnet Networks’ wi-fi adds to the already vibrant experience that only Galway City can offer,” said Alfie Jones, ICT Manager at Galway City Council. “We are delighted with the response from the business community and look forward to watching the service grow to more areas of the city.”

10 steps to cheaper silage - Rising diesel prices mean higher silage bills, but bulk buying and planning ahead can help cut costs keep going while tractors and trailers are coming and going. The ideal is to have a drive-through system with no reversing to slow things down or get in the way of the loader. Needless to say, milking time should not hinder the activity. 7 Get the basics right Before cutting silage, ensure effluent tanks are empty. Clean effluent channels and make sure pipes leading to tanks are clear. Check the pit base and walls to see that they are structurally sound and clean the pit base to avoid costly contamination of forage. When the pit is covered make sure effluent is trapped by the channels, under the polythene, and all clean water off the polythene is directed away in the clean water drainage system.
M
achines all over the country are on the move with the 2018 first cut silage campaign now in full swing. It’s an exciting time of year and after a slow start, grass now looks to be in plentiful supply. However, silage-making is a notoriously expensive job for farmers. An unexpected downpour of rain leading to botched quality silage, or a mower getting banjaxed thanks to a “UFO” (unidentified field object), are just some examples of what can go wrong. Much has also been written about the rising price of diesel this year compared to last, and at least part of that cost will be passed to farmers. But is there anything that can be done to negate the rising cost of silage-making? We’ve come up with the following ten suggestions for a healthier looking silage bill. 1 Take a walk There can be no excuse for not making it your business to walk every acre to be mown before allowing a contractor onto the land. This really is in your own interests. Many contractors are using selfpropelled mowers and harvesters worth north of €250,000 plus the VAT. The last thing you want on your farm is an expensive breakdown caused by running into trouble on your watch. Warn contractors and their staff of hazards they may encounter on your farm. You may have the same contractor every year but don’t assume they will remember the
place well enough from a safety point of view because drivers change year in, year out. 2 Don’t be mean, treat them keen Let there be no doubt that contractors and their weary drivers certainly appreciate a meal if they are working long hours and days. The tradition of bringing a contractor and his team into the kitchen for “spuds” seems to have all but vanished. It doesn’t take a big stretch of the imagination to see how, when it comes to writing the cheque, the well-fed and watered contractor will be more inclined to negotiate. But is it a dying tradition? Contractors say it is, and that often it is the smaller farmer who tends to offer a meal. 3 Have help at hand for the pit For pit silage, be sure to have plenty of hands assembled in order to get the pit covered quickly and efficiently. There is nothing more annoying for a contractor than to have to spend hours covering the pit while the next farmer customer is anxiously waiting for the team to arrive before the weather breaks. So plan ahead, have the cover unfolded and all tyres ready to be placed. Ask your relations or neighbours to help out and return the favour if possible. 4 Prompt payment pays Every contractor’s favourite customer is the farmer who insists on paying “going out the gate”. Not everyone can afford to do this, but
if you can it’s often very worthwhile because most contractors offer a discount for prompt payment. It is often possible to knock €10-€15 an acre off the average silage quote if the farmer pays the contractor at the gate. If you have 50 acres of silage charged at €110 an acre, that comes to a €750 saving. The contractor benefits as well because it keeps an amount of early cash flowing in to meet his staff, fuel, maintenance and insurance bills. 5 Plan ahead for additives Additives are not used as much anymore, with many farmers opting to wilt instead. If you’re using one, a bit of advance planning is needed - whether it is getting the grass tested for sugars, or ordering, collecting and having it delivered. Some of the powder type additives have to be mixed in water and left for a day before they are ready for use. The barrels should be transported to the fields and left so that they are easy to load onto the harvester. Having the contractor sitting waiting for the additive to arrive will lead to hefty charge for wasted time. 6 Set up a “drive-through” Plenty of space is needed around the yard while the pit is being made. Where new facilities are being planned, leave ample room for working in front of silage pits; 12-15m between silage pits and sheds. The silage-making process will be more efficient and safer if the loader operator has room to
8 Less is more For baled silage, two ways to lower the bill are to reduce the number of bales made per acre by wilting the grass properly, and to produce denser bales. Research at Teagasc (see table 1) has proven that fewer but denser wilted bales reduce the costs of baling, plastic wrap and transport, all of which will lower your contractor’s bill
when the job is done. This approach also results in well-formed, solid bales that better retain their shape during storage. 9 Buy in bulk If you are supplying your own bale wrap (as opposed to the contractor supplying it), a good idea is to form a buyers group with a few other farmers in your area. A group of ten farmers have much more clout ordering from the local co-op than you can ever expect to have on your own. 10 Never short change on farm safety Last but certainly not least, never cut corners when it comes to farm safety. This is a classic case of false economy because it could end up costing you your life. The months of May and June are statistically the most dangerous months on the farm. Silage-making machinery has been implicated in lots of farm deaths over the past ten years so there can be no excuses for things like damaged PTO shafts, shoddy trailer lights and untrained drivers. For baled silage, two ways to lower the bill are to reduce the number of bales made per acre by wilting the grass properly, and to produce denser bales.

John Deere to launch futuristic sprayer with carbon fibre boom
J
ohn Deere’s futuristic new 5000-litre capacity R4050i self-propelled sprayer will be demonstrated for the first time in the Sprays & Sprayers arena at Cereals 2018 in England next month. Able to spray at widths of 18 or 36m, Deere says the highperformance carbon fibre spray boom is considerably lighter than steel or aluminium designs. However, Deere engineers say the carbon fibre material used in its construction is around 5.5 times stronger than steel and is able to flex, which relieves the boom structure from the stress that can cause fractures in metal booms. The carbon fibre boom is specially designed to withstand the high dynamic loads created at high application speeds of 20-30kph, even with very wide booms. The R4050i is powered by a 6.8litre John Deere PowerTech engine producing 235-rated hp (255hp
maximum). This engine meets Stage IV emissions regulations by incorporating Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). The sprayer is also equipped as standard with the John Deere GreenStar 3 2630 touchscreen display with full FieldDoc spray documentation and ISOBUS compatibility. It comes AutoTrac-ready and with a free JDLink Ultimate subscription for one year, which enables a range of additional precision farming solutions including new Remote Display Access and Wireless Data Transfer. Other standard features include a multi-functional control lever, electronic sprayer control for automatic filling, mixing, spraying and rinsing, and a 50-litre inductor for safe transfer of crop protection chemicals into the main tank. The PowerSpray solution system features a unique dual-circuit design with two solution pumps, each
optimised for a specific function. A new, purpose-designed waterproof keypad and digital display at the sprayer’s operator station enable full control of automated filling, spraying and agitation. The industry exclusive Active Pause function enables the solution tank to stop filling while still providing clean water under high pressure for rinsing out chemical containers. This means the typical race against the filling solution tank is eliminated, and operators have all the time and clean water they need to complete chemical filling without stress. To reduce input costs by minimising overlaps or skips, John Deere’s automatic Section Control system switches individual boom sections on and off when entering or leaving predefined areas, including headlands, while LED boom lights help to maintain high productivity at night.
Could this be Ireland’s smallest calf? Good things come in small packages, or at least that’s the case for one farmer who claims to be the owner of Ireland’s smallest calf. John Foley keeps eight cows at his farm in Wexford, while working in construction and was shocked to find one of his Belgium Blue cows had given birth to a Charlorais bull calf 58cm (23 inches) in height on May 13. While prematurity can sometimes be the reason for small calves, John told FarmIreland.that the bull calf was born close to its due date. “It’s very rare and unusual. I’ve never seen the likes before and wasn’t expecting it,” he said. John said that he keeps the calf with its mother and in the field with his other calves, but that he is worried about the calf’s health. “It has no problem sucking off the mother but I am worried that one day I’ll go down in to the field and it’ll be dead because even though it has grown it is still very small and I wouldn’t say it is thriving,” John said. John says he plans to rear the bull calf over the winter months and will hopefully sell it next summer. Teagasc statistical geneticist Donagh Berry said that there are numerous reasons why a calf can be born small in size but that it is a “very rare” occurance.

Garda warning after farmer loses €5k in online tractor scam
Gardai have issued a warning after a farmer lost a significant sum of money in an online tractor purchase scam. The County Longford man was recently defrauded of €5,000 when attempting to purchase a tractor online from a trading site in the UK. After agreeing a price online with the owner he lodged a €5,000 deposit in a foreign bank account with the balance due on delivery. The tractor never arrived and seller cannot be located. Farmers are strongly advised not to wire or lodge monies to unknown seller’s accounts in advance of seeing the goods being purchased. Figures from the CSO show 4,263 tractors were licensed for the first time in Ireland last year, with 2,453 of these imported while the remaining 1,810 were new tractors. According to the latest statistics, the number of new tractors being licensed in Ireland has gradually declined in recent years, dropping from 1934 in 2016 to 1,810 in 2017. Buying secondhand tips It is important to check out the machine fully before buying. If you are not familiar with cars then you should get an independent mechanic to look it over for you. When you are test-driving, turn off the radio and air-conditioning and make sure there are no strange noises or smells of oil, petrol or diesel.

Vigilance from farmers called for to avoid water pollution F armers have been urged to remain vigilant during the summer months – especially when harvesting silage and spreading slurry – in order to avoid water pollution and the loss of nutrients into rivers, lakes and other watercourses. This appeal by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) follows a major fish kill discovered in Claremorris, Co. Mayo, last week – where over 1,000 wild brown trout, along with other fish species, were killed due to suspected agricultural silage leak. At present, farmers are busy replenishing their respective supplies of forage ahead of next winter. These silage-cutting operations will remain ongoing throughout the summer months. Silage effluent has the potential to cause “devastating pollution” in streams and rivers, IFI stated. Such effluent is a significant polluting substance, starving fish and invertebrate life of oxygen – resulting in potentially massive fish kills if it enters a watercourse, it added. Farmers were warned that even a small leak can cause huge damage, especially when water levels run low during the summertime – reducing the dilution capacity in the process. IFI is advising farmers to follow its “simple” six-point plan to ensure good farmyard management and reduce their risk of polluting. The six-point plan encourages
farmers to: Use round bales as the most environmentally friendly way to store silage; If a silage pit is being used, ensure it is properly sealed to prevent leakage from under the slab; Carry out slurry spreading in dry weather and never when heavy
rain is forecast; Never spread slurry close to a watercourse, be aware of the slope of land to the watercourse; Do not clean tanks beside any watercourse, stream or a river; Do not allow any effluent or washings to enter any rainwater gully. Commenting on the appeal,
the head of operations at IFI, Dr. Greg Forde, said: “Warm summer weather can magnify the impact of even the smallest leak of silage effluent, with potentially devastating consequences for the environment. “Inland Fisheries Ireland is grateful to the farming community for their continued
consideration and vigilance. “Good farmyard management can help to prevent accidental runs of polluting substances and protect the local environment. This will have a significant and lasting positive impact on valuable wild fish populations in an area,” he said.
‘Think road safety’ - Gardai warn farmers to strap down bales A tractor and trailer carrying silage bales was stopped by Kilkenny Road Policing Unit last week. Gardai said no straps were applied to the load and that the vehicle was grounded until straps were applied and load secured. “It only took a few minutes to secure this load, think road safety,” gardai said. Under road traffic law the bales must be properly loaded so that they are not liable to fall off, drag or cause danger and the load must be distributed in such a way that it is not likely to destabilise the vehicle. There is no height limit for baled produce (e.g. hay, silage, straw etc.), however the load must not exceed the vehicle’s design gross weight and/or individual axle weight limits. Shane O’Loughlin, Chairperson of Wicklow ICMSA has appealed to all road users to exercise caution during this time. “Over that period there will be a very significant increase in the number of tractors and other farm machines on rural roads and it was incumbent on all roads users - whether farmers, contractors, car users, cyclists or pedestrians - to take additional precautions to ensure that silage can be harvested safely and without any accidents on roads,” he said. Mr O’Loughlin noted that agricultural machinery has got bigger over the years and particularly on narrow rural roads, it is critical that all road users take extra care and ‘expect the unexpected’ over the next six weeks.

oes spring have you sniffling and sneezing? Tips for easing the pain of seasonal allergies. Spring has sprung. Trees have burst into leaf, flowers are budding — and for millions of allergysufferers, sneezing, congestion, sniffling and itchy eyes have become a way of life. The major culprits? In early spring, it’s the wind-borne pollen from trees, and later on, grasses cause even more trouble. For most people, allergy symptoms are worst during hot, dry or windy days when there’s a lot of pollen and mold in the air. And while you might not be able to completely avoid allergy symptoms, you can take steps to ease the pain. Here are some tips from The Mayo Clinic. Reduce your exposure to pollen There are several ways you can reduce your exposure to allergy triggers: Stay indoors on windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps to clear pollen from the air. You can also get a heads-up on out door allergens by checking the pollen forecast and air quality index in your local weather report. Delegate yard work, such as mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and other gardening chores. If you do work outside, wear a dust mask and avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest. Keep the outdoors outside by closing your windows (including car windows). Remember that your window screens cannot protect you from microscopic pollen and mould spores. Allergens also have the
annoying habit of sticking to clothing, so shower and change immediately after outdoor activities, and avoid drying sheets or clothes outside. Also, avoid tracking allergens all over your home by leaving your shoes at the door — preferably on a rubber mat that won’t trap particles and can be cleaned easily. Ban your pets from your bed or couch since pollen clings to pet fur. When pollen counts are high, consider taking your allergy medication before symptoms start. Keep indoor air clean Here are some ways to help eliminate allergens from your home: Use the air conditioner in your house (and car). Install a micron allergy-grade filter in your ventilation system. Use a dehumidifier to help keep indoor air dry. Consider using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom. Clean floors with a vacuum cleaner that has a small-particle or HEPA filter. And last but not least, don’t skip the spring-cleaning! If you’re allergic to dust mites, you may want to take these extra steps: Encase mattresses, box springs and pillows in allergy-proof covers. Wash sheets and blankets in water temperature of at least 130 F (54 C). Vacuum floors frequently (at least weekly). Consider replacing your carpets with laminate flooring or another hard material that won’t collect dust mites and other allergens. (This is especially important for your bedroom). Swap your old dust rag for a microfibre clothe that will trap dust

better. Consider wearing gloves and a mask while doing chores that stir up dust — like vacuuming or dusting. Medications for relief of symptoms A number of over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications can help control seasonal allergy symptoms, including: Nasal corticosteroids. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are considered an effective medication for seasonal allergies and are often prescribed for more troublesome symptoms. Antihistamines. Antihistamines help relieve itching, sneezing and runny nose for many allergysuffers. (They are less effective for allergy-related congestion.) Decongestants. For help with congestion, these medications are available in both over-the-counter and prescription liquids, tablets and nasal sprays. Note : Always consult your doctor before taking any medications. (According to the Mayo Clinic, oral decongestants
Westport Foot Clinic
can elevate blood pressure and worsen prostate problems.) Decongestant nasal sprays should only be used for a few days, since prolonged use can make nasal congestion worse. Other treatments for seasonal allergies include allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), and nasal irrigation (which involves flushing out mucus and irritants from your nose with a squeeze bottle or neti pot). Alternative therapies Some people also seek allergy relief from various herbal remedies, including extracts of the shrub butterbur, cat’s claw, choline, goldenseal, stinging nettle, belladonna and bromelain. And some claim that locally produced honey helps reduce allergic reactions by boosting the
immune system. Other alternative therapies include use of probiotics, acupuncture, hypnosis and “allergy removal” programs. However, most medical experts warn there’s no solid scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of these treatments. When to see a doctor For many allergy-sufferers, avoiding allergens and using overthe-counter medications or other treatments provide enough relief to make it through the season. But if your symptoms persist or make you extremely uncomfortable, you may need skin tests or blood tests to find out exactly what allergens trigger your symptoms. In some cases, congestion and other unpleasant symptoms could be food-allergy related rather than environmental.

Easy Aces THEATRE
Mayo Manchester Tradfest Gala Concert IT may be early June but many are already looking forward to the annual Mayo Manchester Tradfest Gala Concert returning to Ballina on Saturday 4 August to stage their special 6th anniversary show. The event is to be hosted by Alan Keegan ‘The Voice of Old Trafford’ and MUTV presenter from Manchester United Football Club.
Wed 27 June, 12.45pm Wed 25 July, 12.45pm €10/5 u18s (lunch €5 from 12.15pm) The Hawk’s Well We present the second in our series of summer lunchtime
theatre episodes of the old time radio sitcom favourite Easy Aces; Witty, light, and small enough to fit into your lunch break, join us for a celebration of the golden age of radio. Duration: 45 mins
Soccer Camp in Skreen/Dromard The Sean Davis 4-day outdoor summer Fun Soccer Camp Academy takes place a Skreen/Dromard Community Centre from Monday, July 23rd to Thursday, July 24 for boys and girls. The cost will be €55. Times: 10 a.m . – 3 p.m. daily. Contact Sean Davis, FAI, IFA, FA, European A licence coach on 00443871263044 or Ann Marie on 087-6649635.
The concert will feature performances by The Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band who are celebrating their 70th anniversary. The Manchester based award winning band is one of the few bands in the world to have the honour of playing at both the 50th and 100th Irish Independence celebrations in Dublin. Joining the band from Manchester is Irish Singer, Dancer and multiinstrumentalist, Joe Keegan from the hit BBC Show, The Voice. Joe has just released his new album ‘Pick Myself Up’ and has over 30,000 followers on social media. More information in July issue.
Cairde Sligo Arts Festival & Hawk's Well Theatre FLOOK Fri 13 Jul 2018, 8pm €20/18conc./10u18s The Hawk’s Well Theatre The flutes of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, the guitar of Ed Boyd and the bodhran of John Joe Kelly weave and spin traditionally rooted tunes into the breathtaking sound of the groundbreaking band Flook. This group possesses a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. Though their first release, Flook! Live! (1997), was already heralded as "the ultimate modern flute album" by The Irish Times, Flook only properly burst onto the international music scene with the release of their debut studio album, “Flatfish”, in 1999. "Rubai", released in 2002 and nominated for
BBC Folk Album of the Year, was universally applauded by both journalists and fellow musicians and cemented Flook's reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative bands to emerge from the English/Irish folk scene, and they went on to win the coveted award for Best Group at BBC Folk Awards 2006. There is no shortage of virtuosity amongst the members of Flook, but the unique impact of this band stems from the wholly intuitive, almost symbiotic, exchange between the various flutes, frets and skins. Flook announced that they were taking a prolonged pause from live performance at the end of 2008, but, due to overwhelming popular demand, they're now back playing live and firing explosively on all four cylinders.
The California Feetwarmers
Wed 11 July 2018, 8pm €18/9 u18s The Hawk’s Well Theatre Masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing, this Los Angeles based seven-piece are renowned for an earthy
depth of character that sets them apart from others who have followed that throwback path to New Orleans, circa 1920. Their boisterous on-stage antics are solidly underpinned by playing that is as close to the source as it can be.
