HIS Friday, 25th May, the country votes in what has possibly been the most divisive, nuanced and emotionally charged referendum in the history of the state – something which is acknowledged on both sides of the argument. Also, whether or not the outcome of the vote will be for the betterment of society here in Ireland we’ll probably never know. Many things have changed in Ireland since 1983 when the Eighth Amendment was inserted into the Constitution. It guarantees to protect as far as practicable the equal right to life of the unborn child and the mother – and prohibits abortion in almost all cases. A significant turning point in that campaign was when the bishops stated that a person could no longer be a Catholic if they did not support the referendum. That was that. Thirty-five years on, the influence of the Catholic Church has waned and there is a significant section of Irish society which supports liberalisation of abortion laws to an extent not thought possible even up to five years ago. Many of those now campaigning for repeal of the 8th Amendment were also involved in the same sex-marriage campaign in 2015. That was an exuberant, feel-good campaign that developed unstoppable momentum. The evidence so far, however, is that the Repeal campaign was not a simple re-run of that referendum. For some voters at least, what’s on offer now represents an uncomfortable choice. The retain side’s position is too inflexible for them, not allowing for exceptional cases such as pregnancies as a result of rape or incest, or fatal foetal abnormalities (which mean a child cannot live outside the womb). There is also the question of the rights balance between the mother and the unborn child. (Continued on Page 2)

Mayo tourism operators on biggest ever sales mission to China

ourism Ireland’s biggest ever sales mission to China is taking place this week. A delegation of 29 senior representatives from 24 Irish tourism enterprises, including the Glen Keen Farm, Westport House and Hotel Westport, is taking part in the targeted mission to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong – to grow our share of this rapidlygrowing tourism market. Next month sees the

commencement of two new flights to Dublin from Beijing and Hong Kong – eight direct flights, representing around 1,700 airline seats each week, for the first time ever from the Asia Pacific Region to Ireland. This week’s sales mission involves meetings with representatives of both Hainan Airlines in Beijing and Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong, to discuss how to drive demand for and maximise the promotion of

both services. Tourism Ireland aims to grow Chinese visitor numbers to 175,000 per year, by 2025 (+150% on 2017). The mission also involves meetings with hundreds of leading Chinese travel agents and tour operators. As well as highlighting the new flights to Dublin, a key message for Tourism Ireland this week is the British Irish Visa Scheme – which allows Chinese nationals to visit

both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, using a single visa. Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “China is the largest outbound travel market in the world and one that Tourism Ireland is committed to growing over the coming years. In 2017, we welcomed an estimated 70,000 Chinese visitors to the island of Ireland; the introduction of direct flights from Beijing and Hong Kong is a major game-changer and offers a real opportunity for us to build on this number. We are confident that we are in a strong position to grow this emerging travel market in 2018 and over the coming years.” Tourism Ireland has a strong network in China, with offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu. The organisation’s activity in China involves establishing and building relationships with influential intermediaries, including the travel trade, airlines and media – highlighting our natural attractions, cities, castles and proximity to Britain. In conjunction with Fáilte Ireland and Tourism NI, Tourism Ireland has developed and successfully piloted a new ‘China Ready’ training programme – with more than 20 tourism operators around the island of Ireland participating to date, to learn about the specific requirements and needs of Chinese visitors.

To Repeal or Not – that is the question! - Continued from front page Yet, the alternative, unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks (which the Government has said it intends to legislate for if the Eighth Amendment is repealed), seems a step too far for many voters, according to those who have canvassed

them. For them it seems to be heading uncomfortably close to abortion on demand. There also seems to be a city/country divide – the urban voter favouring repeal with the rural voter having particular difficulty with the 12 weeks.

It is a complex debate with many ethical, social and moral factors. We urge you to go out and vote on May 25th and have your say on an issue which will have important implications for Irish society in the decades ahead.

ligo Tidy Towns has appealed to the Tourism Sector for support this year. Chairman Peter Tiernan made the appeal in his address at the launch of their Historic Plaques Walk and Information brochure last Wednesday 2nd May. “Next to the people of Sligo, Tourism and Hospitality are the main beneficiaries of Sligo Tidy Towns,” he told guests at the launch in the Glasshouse Hotel. “Of course visitor numbers leads to increased business for everyone. We therefore would welcome any support at all from the Tourism sector in Sligo. We did not receive any so far,” he said. The completion of the plaques erected at historical points around the town

allowed for the information brochure to be launched. Among those to have plaques erected in their memory are Dracula author Bram Stoker’s mother Charlotte Matilda Blake Thornley at Old Market Street, next to the courthouse. Other Sligo figures on the plaques include 19th century Alderman Bernard Colleary and 1916 volunteer William Partridge who fought alongside Countess Markievicz in the GPO. There are 20 plaques in all, funded by Sligo Tidy Towns and the brochure is available in Sligo Tourism Office. “The walking tour includes twenty sites of historical interest and will provide an informative walk for tourists and locals alike,” said Peter Tiernan. Sligo Tidy Towns has

applied for grant aid to Leader Sligo to re-instate to original condition the 150 year old gates and railings at Sligo Old Cemetery at the top of Pearse Road.Separately, they’ve received a grant approval for funding from the Heritage Council to carry out a professional survey and recording of the Cemetery graves. “There are many well known people buried there, and the Cemtery has been describ3ed as the “Glasnevin of Sligo” said Peter Tiernan. Sligo Tidy Towns will then place on display a map of the graveyard to be agreed with Sligo County Council. “Sligo old Cemetery is a very sensitive area of protection and we are working with Sligo County Council staff every step of the way,” he said. “We can only start to

exploit the potential of the cemetery when the gates are re-instated for health and safety reasons. “So witout the leader funding nothing else can happen there,” said Peter. Sligo Tidy Towns is also planning to erect a piece of artistic public art (not a statue) at a place yet to be decided. “We have the tentative agreement of Sligo County Council for this project but unfortunately we don’t have the money so far, but we haven’t given up yet,” he said. Two further additions to the Yeats Trail plaques will be erected on Wine Street in the coming weeks. The Maud Gonne mural at Lidl is being replaced near Decorplan and a further sculpture piece is to be unveiled shortley at the old Clarence Hotel.

HSE delays on Cath lab will impact cardiac services in Sligo – Scanlon Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon says further delays to the establishment of a permanent Cath Lab at Sligo University Hospital will have serious implications on the recruitment of an additional cardiologist for the hospital. New correspondence received by Deputy Scanlon reveals that the HSE has set up a review group to examine the provision of Cath labs across the country, which will further delay the establishment of a Cath lab in Sligo. “I am deeply frustrated by this latest information from the Saolta Hospital

Group, which clearly outlines the intention to set up a permanent Cath lab at SUH, but which explains that “a National Review of Specialist Cardiac Services is currently being undertaken”. This will undoubtedly delay the provision of the Cath lab at SUH”, said Deputy Scanlon. “The current system, whereby a mobile unit visits the hospital once a week, is not providing the range of services that are so badly needed. Patients are forced to travel to Altnagelvin in Derry, Dublin or Galway for procedures. “The lack of a permanent Cath lab will

also create recruitment issues for the hospital. SUH is currently advertising for a second cardiologist and it will soon be seeking a replacement for a current post. If we want to attract the best candidates it’s crucial that we have a Cath lab. “The HSE should not be standing in the way of Saolta’s current plan, which proposes a fixed Cath lab in Sligo. I am calling on Minister Harris to end the delay and approve the existing plan so that patients in Sligo and across the North West have access to a full service cardiology facility”.

T could be described as a bold move by Westport publicans but they are set to make history by becoming the first town in Ireland to replace plastic straws with biodegradable ones. The environmental initiative will come into place on June 1, when the plastic straws will become a thing of the past in all Westport pubs and hotels. The decision to phase out plastic straws was made following a suggestion by Westport Tidy Towns to the local vintners, in an effort to reduce the amount of plastic generated in the town. Seán O’Grady, the outgoing Chairman

of the Westport Vintners’ Association, said: “We have been working with the Tidy Towns for a number of years, and we play our part in keeping the town tidy by cleaning outside our premises. It was mentioned to us about doing away with plastic straws, and we all agreed that it was the right thing to do. We are phasing it out at the moment and we should all only using biodegradable straws by the end of May. We are delighted to do it,” he explained. Mr O’Grady explained that changes in drinking habits and culture meant that the use of straws have become a lot more

common in recent years. “Once, the only time you would use a straw was when you were giving a mineral to a young person. But the trend has changed in recent years, and they are used more and more, especially with women drinking cocktails. It suited publicans too because lipstick was not staining glasses, which can be difficult to wash,” he said. The idea was the brainchild of Westport’s Junior Tidy Towns. Members of this group are running an awareness campaign called ‘Unwrapped’, encouraging people to reduce unnecessary use of plastics and excess packaging.

Liam Campion, the Chairman of Westport Tidy Towns, said he was delighted that the Westport Vintners agreed to the initiative and that Westport is leading the way in reducing plastic waste. “We asked the vintners to come on board, and we were delighted that they all agreed to do so as one group. Westport will be the first town in Ireland where all the vintners introduce biodegradable straws. We hope that with the vintners now using biodegradable straws, other premises like coffee shops and take-aways will follow suit,” he said.

Castlebar flying the flag for Europe PARTICIPANTS of Welcome to Work in Castlebar have marked Europe Day (May 9) with a celebration promoting the benefits of the EU. The event was hosted by Seetec at its offices in at N5 Business Park, Moneen Road, Castlebar, last week (May 9th) and is part of a European-wide campaign called ‘EU in my region’. As part of its Welcome to Work programme, Seetec has been working with new communities in Castlebar to help unemployed legally resident migrants into employment in Ireland. The programme is part supported by the Irish government and the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014 -2020. The programme’s purpose is to increase employment

opportunities for participants through a comprehensive 13week course, including language training, social skills, and mentoring that will assist to gaining long term employment or further training. Seetec staff and participants of the Welcome to Work programme gathered to share European culture, including traditional music, as well as a general knowledge quiz on Europe. The EU in my region campaign seeks to raise awareness of EU-backed projects regionally and nationwide such as Welcome to Work. Vicon Fertiliser Spreaders

he Vicon range of twin disc fertiliser spreader hosts a wide variety of models to suits all requirements and applications. The most popular being the RO-C and RO-M models. The RO-C is a very compact spreader that will fit behind every tractor. Available in 700 & 1400 litre capacity the RO-C can spread up to 18 metres. Using 4 vanes per disc and the RotaFlow system, fertiliser is treated in a gentle way and is spread in a triangular shaped distribution pattern with double overlap. Hydraulic control of the shutters is standard while left and right shut off can be fitted as an option. Both lights and a cover can be fitted to individual requirements while a fine application kit is standard fitment which allows spreading of small seeds. The best seller the RO-M is

medium in size and volume, but can spread up to 24 metres and comes with the RotaFlow system as standard. It also comes with 8 vanes per disc for the same spreading quality as the bigger spreaders. It is available in 1100, 1550 & 2000 litre capacity. By simply adding on aluminium hopper extensions of 450 litre capacity the total capacity can be increased. The RO-M spreader can be operated hydraulically as standard but electric control via the Comfort Control II computer can be chosen as an option. LED lights, cover, left & right shut off along with the TrimFlow border spreading kit can be added to suit individual requirements. And like the smaller RO-C, the RO-M also comes as standard with the fine application kit. All Vicon spreaders feature the RotaFlow principle. This unique system results in no impact, no fragmentation

and therefore no dust of the fertiliser. Smooth acceleration and centrifugal force accelerates fertiliser up to disc speed before it reaches the vane and along with a double overlap spreading pattern gives unrivalled accuracy. Coupled to that the 4 vanes per disc on the RO-C or 8 vanes per disc on the RO-M results in minimal wind influence to give a consistent spreading pattern, while also guaranteeing accuracy on slopes as the fertiliser always contacts the vanes at the same point. For those who require more precision the RO-M is available as a weight cell machine in the form of the RO-M EW to give the advantages of speed related spreading while the RO-M GEOSPREAD provides full GPS section control for even greater precision and accuracy.

tudents from both St. Mary’s Secondary School,in Ballina, and Our Lady’s Secondary School, in Belmullet, have taken home awards at the Student Enterprise Programme National Finals in Croke Park last week, organised by the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) for secondary schools. The students from the two schools have received the Intellectual Property Award in the Intermediate and Senior category respectively, and were presented with their awards on stage by the Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen T.D. and Sheelagh Daly of the Local Enterprise Offices. The winning students at the Senior level were: Eiméar Winters, aged 16. Maelíosa O’Hara, aged 16, Erin Gannon, aged 16, Mary Gilvarry, aged 17, Holly Kenny, aged 16, and Nicola Lowther, aged 16 from St. Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina, who worked under the guidance of their teachers, Mark Barrett and Claire Kelly. The student enterprise team,‘Back 2 Basics’developed grammar books for students in Irish, French and German, a study aid for all levels of education. The winning student in the Intermediate category was Catriona Batty, from Our Lady’s Secondary School, Belmullet, who worked with the support of her teachers, Colm Doyle and Lisa Connolly. Her student enterprise company was called: ‘Comfy Hands Healthcare’ and she created a padded fabric cover with a Velcro fastening system. The aim of the product is to bring comfort and support to the hands of anyone who needs to use mobility

aids, whether it be through disability, chronic illness or temporarily after an accident. Representing the county in the Junior Category on the day was: Aine Dixon, Alannah Concannon, Katelynn Cosgrove, Leah Gaughan from Our Lady’s, Belmullet. The student enterprise was called: Life Charms, unfortunately the team did not receive an award, but they did receive a lot of recognition and encouragement for their concept, from the judges. The team created Life Charms that could be used as an emotional aid; that would help young people to express their feelings and promote positive mental health. All teams received a great deal of support and advice from their mentor Peter Hopkins; who worked tirelessly to help the teams and encourage them to attain the best result they could from the Student Enterprise Programme. The programme, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the LEOs, had a total of 230 teenage entrepreneurs, aged between 13 and 18, from 77 different enterprises, competing at last week’s National Final, with every local authority area represented. This year’s Student Enterprise Programme attracted 23,600 student participants from 480 secondary schools around the country. Starting every September, the enterprise education initiative gives studentsthe skills and practical knowledge to run a real-life business. Congratulating this year’s winners and their schools, Minister Breen said: “Whether it’s generating business ideas, developing markets or selling to customers, students taking part in the

Student Enterprise Programme throughout Ireland have consistently shown a passion and flair for business and enterprise. Entrepreneurship is the backbone of the Irish economy and initiatives such as the Student Enterprise Programme are key to developing Ireland’s future enterprising culture. Feeding Summer bedding plants use a lot of energy to keep flowering and although there is fertiliser in the compost, a bit of supplementary liquid feeding is beneficial to keep your plants healthy and fizzing with flowers right through the summer and into autumn. For best results use liquid feeds such as Tomato Food or Baby Bio Outdoor about once every week in summer.

Here are some tips to get the most from your summer containers. Colour theme or glorious riot? There’s nothing wrong with a riot of mixed colours, but a good colour theme will instantly give your containers more impact. Remember, pots have a colour too and can help reinforce your theme. The style of house can be reflected and augmented with the style of planted pots too. A modern or contemporary designed home for instance would benefit from simple containers and chic planting whereas a traditional cottage would. Keeping it in proportion Height is very important when choosing plants as large pots will look flat and boring unless you choose at least one relatively tall specimen. Shrubs with an architectural shape such as a cordyline, astelia or phormium work well, or you could use a box or yew plant, which have been clipped into a pyramid, sphere or lollipop shape. Standard fuchsias, tall dahlias and marguerite daisies are also superb centre pieces for pots and flower all through the summer. Supporting Roles Once you’ve chosen the main plant for your pot, smaller plants can now be selected for

creating the next layer. You’ll have a great choice here from geraniums, begonias, scented pinks, fuchsias and many more. Again, choose varieties to enhance your colour theme. Most bedding plants are in flower when you buy them so it’s easy to mix and match. Remember to include some trailing plants for tumbling over the edge such as Surfinia petunias, trailing begonias, bidens, bacopa and ivy-leaved geraniums. You can also put in some trailing foliage plants such as helichrysum and variegated nepeta, to enhance the overall display. Planting This is the fun part, but there are some things to remember before you start to plant. Firstly, always choose a good quality compost. For containers we recommend Professional Multi-purpose compost which has the addition of slow release fertiliser. We also recommend mixing some Westland Water Saving Gel granules through the compost of summer containers to act as a reservoir in dry spells. Of course, all pots should have a drainage hole to allow excess water to drain away too! Fill the pot with compost and position the plants on top so you can play around with the design before planting. Aftercare Watering containers is vital in the summer to keep your plants flushed with flowers. Even allowing containers or baskets to dry out once may set them back for the whole summer. Watering in the cooler part of the day (mornings or evenings) is best as it allows your plants time to soak up the water.

Dead-heading A few minutes spent picking off old faded blooms every couple of days will keep your containers in pristine condition. It also prevents the plant setting seed which encourages it to produce even more flushes of blooms. Frost Protection Have some Horticultural Fleece ready to protect young bedding plants from any late frosts. Smaller containers can simply be brought inside on a cold night.

eats Society appoints Harvard fellow and IFTA-nominated writer Alice Lyons inaugural poet-in-residence The appointment, made to mark Poetry Day Ireland, is welcomed by WB Yeats’s granddaughter Caitríona Yeats Poetry can help young people to move beyond the ‘surface’ and superficiality of an always-on smartphone culture, to discover deeper things about themselves such as a sense of adventure, fun and fearlessness. That’s according to Irish-American poet Alice Lyons who was unveiled as inaugural poet-in-residence of Yeats Society Sligo, the organisation which celebrates and promotes nationally and worldwide the work of Nobel Prize winner WB Yeats. It is the society’s first time ever appointing someone to the role, illustrat-

ing its strong commitment to supporting the tradition of poetry in Ireland. “I was delighted when I heard that the Yeats Society had decided to appoint a poet-in-residence and that the initiative was launched today, 26 April, on what is Poetry Day Ireland,” said Yeats. “It is a wonderful idea and a great addition to all of the other activities that the society has run and supported down through the years.” The appointment complements the legacy left by WB Yeats and the encouragement and support he offered poets in his time. He networked with many poets, both famous and less famous. Like Yeats, Alice Lyons works to increase the accessibility of poetry and offer it in new contexts, media and communities with a particular focus on bringing it to young people.

Lyons said: “Our children and young people are bursting with creative energy that often has little place to grow or go deep or be real. Their lives are squeezed by so many surface demands: the surface of surfing their screens, the surfaces of the social network and its superficialities, the surfaces of a school curriculum that often rewards compliance over risk. “Poetry can be a place for children and young people to venture out into the deeper night-sea waters of their lives to plumb, to play, to discover. The hope is to offer Sligo a place, as young Yeats had, to open up to fun, fearlessness and adventure through the medium of poetry.” Susan O’Keeffe, Director of the Yeats Society, said the organisation is delighted to name its inaugural poet-inresidence.

Save the 8th Amendment By Fionnuala Woods, Sligo On May 25th the Irish government is asking me and you, the Irish people, to remove the last remaining right that unborn children in Ireland have, that is, the right to life. They are asking us to get rid of this fundamental and most basic human right, upon which all others rest, and to adopt a liberal abortion-on-demand proposal. This proposal, at it's very minimum, would allow for abortions to be carried out on healthy babies of healthy mothers up to the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. In Britain where a supposedly ‘restrictive’ abortion plan was introduced it has led to 1 in every 5 babies being aborted with over 90% of babies who

have a diagnosis of Down syndrome before birth being aborted. The Irish government is asking us to bring this type of abortion legislation to Ireland, a country which values life, which values diversity, which values people of all abilities. With this proposal, the government is asking us to trust them, and only them -- to legislate on abortion in whatever way they chose. If the 8th Amendment is repealed, it will be the politicians who will make the legislation for abortion in Ireland for the next 6 months, the next 6 years, the next 60 years and so on. During a time when the government, specifically the health sector, has failed women time-and-time again. Why would we give them the power to

do whatever they like with regards to abortion? If the government truly cared about women's health, compassion, and care, they would work on fixing what is broken instead of focusing on pushing something like abortion. I've done my research and I've followed the issue, and the recent debates on abortion. And to me it's become absolutely clear that Ireland is a better place with the 8th Amendment, a place where mothers and unborn children are cared for and protected. A place where children of all abilities are encouraged to thrive and to embrace life to the full. A place which respects human rights, most importantly the right to life. This is why I will be voting No on May 25th.
