THE NEW ELECTRIC LEAF

N

issan has launched a new longer-ranged version of its Leaf electric car that can be driven by just one “e-Pedal” for both accelerating and braking. The new Leaf can travel up to 235 miles between charges under European driving conditions and can be fully charged in 40 minutes with fast chargers, although electric cars typically run 20-25% shorter distances under real-world driving conditions. Nissan says that its new e-Pedal, which drives the car forward when depressed and brakes when pressure is released, should increase driving efficiency and be all that a driver needs to operate the vehicle for around 90% of urban driving. The Leaf will slow to a halt and can hold itself steady on an incline without the need to depress a brake pedal, of which one is included for emergency or aggressive braking. The restyled 2018 Leaf is lower and more sculpted than its bulbous predecessor, billed as sleek and aerodynamic to maximise range. It also comes with optional new “ProPilot” semiautonomous driving features that can keep the car centred in a motorway lane and stop it from hitting objects in front, as well as being able to park itself. The new Leaf also has 38% more power, increased to 147 horsepower reaching a top speed of

89mph, which again falls well below specification offered by rivals. The Leaf remains an important part of Yokohama-based Nissan’s branding as a symbol of the company’s commitment to the environment. “It’s more about an effort to make a better society, so we are looking at a decade or two decades ahead,” said Sugimoto.

25 YEARS

NORTON WAY CORPORATE • ISSUE 37 • OCT 2017

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Honda’s iconic racer for the roads: the Civic Type R. Unleashed to the world in 1992, the performance brand reaches new highs in its respective class and take the Honda brand to legendary status.

 READ MORE HERE

Celebrating a quarter century of the Type R at Rockingham in September, Honda UK gave a select group of guests the chance to ride all variants of the Civic Type R, the Accord and the Integra.

History of Type R

The first ‘R’ was the NSX-R, and it set the template: motorsport-inspired engineering upgrades, powerful highrevving engine, focused suspension and, of course, the famed red Honda badge on the nose. Originally called NSX-R: the internal ‘R-type’ designation was later formalised as Type R. The first to land on UK shores was the Integra DC2 in 1998, quickly followed by the Accord. But it was 2001 that was the breakthrough year with the EP3 making its debut and bringing the hot hatch to the masses. Almost 21,000 were sold over six years until 2007, making it the most successful Type R to date. The FN2 followed hot on its heels and continued the strong Type R sales in the UK. But then the global recession hit in 2011 and the Type R brand was put on hold. There was to be a break of over three years before the FK2 made its debut. Launched late in the life of the standard Civic, there are less than 2,500 FK2 on the

roads; Honda expects the car is set to become a collector’s piece. And now 2017 sees the latest incarnation hit retail forecourts. Engineered from the ground up alongside the standard Civic, the FK8 joins the product line up very early in the Civic family life cycle and is famous for being the only hot hatch that puts more than 300PS through the front wheels.

Five Type R facts:

1. At maximum revs, the 1998 Integra Type R’s pistons moved up and down faster than a contemporary Formula 1 engine when run at maximum revs 2. The second-generation Honda NSX-R featured a speedometer that read up to 300mph 3. The FK8 Civic Type R is the first ever Type R product to ever be officially sold in the US 4. There are less than 2,500 FK2 Civic Type R on UK roads, making it a future collector’s item 5. Type R vehicles traditionally have a red Honda badge and Championship White paint as an option, as a tribute to their first winning F1 car

ALL NEW HONDA

ALL NEW HONDA CARS SOLD IN EUROPE TO FEATURE ELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY Honda has confirmed that electrified technology will now feature in every new car model released in Europe. Honda Motor Co. President and CEO Takahiro Hachigo made the announcement during his conference speech at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Honda aims to have electrified technology in two-thirds of all new cars sold globally by 2030. For Europe, however, the target is five years earlier. “Here in Europe, we see this move towards electrification gathering pace at an even higher rate than elsewhere,” Hachigo-san said. Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’ is officially coming into focus.

URBAN EV CONCEPT

Hachigo-san also unveiled Honda’s brandnew electric vehicle, the Urban EV Concept. The Honda emblem on the concept is backlit in blue, which previews a new styling feature for the company’s future EVs. Built on a new platform, the car showcases sophisticated tech in a simple yet elegant design. But this isn’t just a vision of the future; a production version of the Urban EV Concept will be released in Europe as soon as 2019.

CR-V HYBRID PROTOTYPE Philip Ross, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, followed Hachigo-san by introducing the new CR-V Hybrid Prototype. “On sale from 2018, this vehicle will be the first Honda hybrid SUV sold here in Europe,” he said. The CR-V Hybrid powertrain delivers real-world efficiency and effortless driveability. The i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) twomotor system does not need a conventional transmission – instead, a more compact multi-mode unit with a single fixed-gear ratio delivers torque seamlessly to the wheels.

POWER MANAGER Ross also debuted Honda’s new Power Manager concept – a fully integrated energy transfer system that distributes electricity to and from a main power grid, directs power flow from renewable sources, and manages the interaction between an electric vehicle battery and the home or business to which it’s connected. “When appropriate, Power Manager can draw on energy from the EV battery to power the home and minimise the demand from the main grid,” Ross said. “It even allows energy stored in the EV to be sold back to the grid to generate income for the owner.” Honda is participating in a trial in western France, where Power Manager units will be installed in a pilot scheme, as part of the development of a regional ‘smart grid’ to be completed by 2020. 9

The all-new Mazda CX-5 awarded five-star Euro NCAP rating  CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION

T

he all-new Mazda CX-5 has been awarded the maximum fivestar safety rating by Euro NCAP. Based on their rigorous independent crash testing, plus evaluation of Mazda’s sophisticated driver assistance systems, Euro NCAP’s five-star rating is comprehensive endorsement of the all-new CX-5’s passive and active safety. On sale in the UK since June, the all-new Mazda CX-5 is equipped with Mazda’s advanced and innovative i-ACTIVSENSE driver-supporting safety technologies that deliver class-leading active safety performance. As you’d expect the all-new CX-5’s high strength SKYACTIV-BODY also ensures passive safety is exemplary, too. Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe, said “the safety of the people who drive our cars, and those around them, is very important to Mazda. This five-star rating is a tribute to the outstanding work of Mazda’s designers and engineers who refused to compromise during the development of the all-new Mazda CX-5. It illustrates how, thanks to Mazda’s Proactive Safety philosophy, SUV drivers can enjoy both class-leading safety and stunning looks courtesy of Mazda’s KODO: Soul of Motion design.” With a body that absorbs and disperses impact force

efficiently within the engine compartment to more effectively suppress cabin deformation during a collision, the all-new CX-5 features optimally shaped reinforcement at the base of the A pillars. Enhancing side collision performance, a solid H-shaped ring structure joining the roof and B pillars to the underbody combines with two side impact bars in each front door and one in each rear door to prevent cabin deformation. The all-new CX-5 is fitted with six airbags – dual front, side airbags and full-length curtain, while three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters and ISOFIX child seat anchor points equip the left and right rear seats, completing the standard safety package. With meticulous attention paid to lowering the risk of pedestrian impact injury, the all-new CX-5‘s safety reach extends to other road users, as well. Holes and cutouts within the bonnet reinforcements create an easily crushable structure that helps mitigate injury to a pedestrian‘s head in the event of an accident. In addition, the cowl panel employs an S-shaped structural crosssection that acts like a spring to help better absorb energy. Energy-absorbing foam placed within the front bumper helps limit the degree of injury to a pedestrian‘s legs, while a lower bumper stiffener helps prevent the legs from sliding under the front of the car. 10

Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE intelligent active safety technology supports day-to-day use, delivering a level of driver support that’s perfectly aligned to Mazda’s ‘Love of Driving’ approach. Standard across the range Advanced Smart City Brake Support (Advanced SCBS) uses a forward sensing camera to automatically stop or reduce the speed of the car when there is a risk of collision with the vehicle or pedestrian in front. An £800 option on Sport Nav Diesel models, Mazda’s Safety Pack adds a host of active safety features including Adaptive LED Headlights, Mazda’s Lane-keep Assist System with Driver Attention Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Smart City Brake Support. In addition, 175ps Sport Nav Auto models with the Safety Pack, can be optionally fitted with Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) with Stop and Go function. Measuring the relative speed and distance of the vehicle ahead it automatically controls the engine and brakes to maintain the appropriate vehicle speed and optimum following distance. With robust passive safety and advanced active safety technology, the Euro NCAP fivestar all-new Mazda CX-5 delivers class-leading safety alongside the driver engagement you’d expect from Mazda.

THIS FIVE-STAR RATING IS A TRIBUTE TO THE OUTSTANDING WORK OF MAZDA’S DESIGNERS AND ENGINEERS WHO REFUSED TO COMPROMISE DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ALL-NEW MAZDA CX-5. IT ILLUSTRATES HOW, THANKS TO MAZDA’S PROACTIVE SAFETY PHILOSOPHY, SUV DRIVERS CAN ENJOY BOTH CLASS-LEADING SAFETY AND STUNNING LOOKS COURTESY OF MAZDA’S KODO: SOUL OF MOTION DESIGN.” Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe

SKODA KAROQ 2017 REVEALED

The Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 saw the world premiere of the all-new Skoda Karoq SUV. Skoda is looking to boost its SUV range with the introduction of the compact Karoq, which replaces the Yeti in the automaker’s line-up.Karoq echoes the popular Kodiaq in terms of style and design, albeit with reduced proportions.

2018 Skoda Karoq SUV interior

The interior will be comfortable, spacious and – if its recent models are anything to go by – well put together. Like the larger Kodiaq, the materials will be pleasant and hard wearing but not as plush as those used in the VW Tiguan. The Karoq features digital dials as an option in a similar fashion to Audi’s Virtual Cockpit – a first for the firm– and a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity. The upgraded infotainment system adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Karoq’s is roomier than the Yeti model it replaces. It offers a 521-litre boot, which jumps to a huge 1,630 litres with the rear seats down. You can also remove the rear seats entirely, leaving a van-like 1,810-litre capacity. An optional rear-seat setup made up of three individual chairs lets you slide and fold each individually – allowing you to prioritise boot space or passenger room as you need it.

2018 Skoda Karoq SUV engines and driving

Powering the Karoq is a choice of five different engine variants, including two petrol and three diesel. The power outputs for these engine range from 85kW (115bhp) to 140kW (190bhp). Displacement capacities range from 1.0, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0-litres with all variants available to be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmissions. The top of the range 2.0-litre TDI diesel powertrain which produces (190bhp) can only be specified with a seven-speed DSG. Four-wheel drive is optional for extra grip in poor driving conditions. An optional off-road driving mode optimises the car’s traction control system to maximise grip in the slipperiest of conditions.

The curtain has finally been lifted on the new Skoda Karoq – the second prong of the firm’s attack on the lucrative SUV market, which started with the larger Kodiaq.

2018 Skoda Karoq SUV styling

The Karoq features Skoda’s recent angular design language inspired, we’re reliably informed, by Czech crystals. It has a chrome-trimmed grille with vertical slats, angular headlights and optional full-LED headlights with daytime running light signatures. It also comes with LED brake lights as standard. Karoq is a compact SUV measuring just 4382mm in length, 1841mm in width and 1605 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2638 mm. These proportions allow a huge boot space of 521-litres, with the seats upright and 1,630 when they are folded flat. This luggage space can be expanded father if the back seats are removed, transforming the Karoq into a van with 1,810-litres of space.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier said: “This car is going to continue our SUV campaign. “It’s got exactly what it needs to be just as successful as Skoda’s first big SUV the Kodiaq which got of a very successful start with almost 50,000 deliveries since it was launch in April. It offers more than you’d expect of a compact SUV.” Entry-level models will cost around £17,000 and the car will go on sale in late-2017.
