3 RUGBY PLAYERS 3
What happens when you “I think I’m going to be try to teach three rugby terrible” players how to ride a motorcycle in one day? JUSTIN / Second Row, Southgate RFC
Surely nothing scares rugby players? They choose to spend their free time smashing into fridge-sized opponents, and often getting their features rearranged in the process, so you’d think it’d be pretty hard to put the frighteners on these oval-ball warriors. And yet, as Richard, Justin and Jack of Southgate RFC were about to ride a motorcycle for the first time, they weren’t exactly brimming with confidence. “I’m a bit nervous,” said Jack. Find out how they got on.
Honda likes a challenge and, what’s more, we love getting people riding. We took three rugby players from Southgate RFC to Honda School of Motorcycling. They’ve never ridden motorcycles before. Could we get them out on the road – in just one day?

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. There’s only one style of helmet for each type of bike
2. You don’t need a helmet in hot weather or for short journeys
3. A dirty helmet will slow you down
4. Passengers should carry their own helmet
5. You can wear anyone’s helmet so long as it slides over your head
6. Small-fitting full-face helmets will squish your nose and cheeks

TRUE
FALSE! Styles are open face, full face and flip up. Each has its own merits depending on the kind of rider you are, what weather you ride in and whether you need to frequently take your helmet off. No one helmet is required for one bike. Choice is purely based on personal lifestyle.
FALSE! It’s illegal to ride a motorised bike without a helmet in the UK (except if you’re Sikh). If you’re someone that runs warm, then you can opt for an open faced-style helmet, but you must wear a helmet regardless of how long your journey is.
TRUE! Ride like the wind with a clean helmet. It’s got nothing to do with aerodynamics, but rather being able to see better actually gets you there quicker – plus, you’re less likely to crash. So, clean with a soft cloth and return to it’s bag after use.
FALSE! It is true that pillion passengers must wear a helmet if sitting behind you, but if chivalry isn’t dead, you might want to carry one you can lend. However, it has to fit — more on this in the next point.

TRUE! As you ride, wind pressure will push the helmet into your face, so if a full-face helmet touches your nose you need to try a bigger size. There shouldn’t be a gap between your temples and brow pads with any style of helmet, so test with your finger.

W ABOUT MOTORBIKE HELMETS
7. ECE 22 05 and BS 6658:1985 are the only codes you need
8. Four wheels are better than two because they don’t require a helmet.
9. Buying a brand new helmet is the best value you can get. Every time
10. If chin straps cut your skin, you can leave them undone
11. There’s only one way to lie a bike helmet down
12. The police will let you off if you don’t want to ruin your hair

FALSE! We’re fans of cars and bikes. When it comes to quad bike, you don’t actually need a helmet by law. We’d still recommend one though.
TRUE! Though the cost of second hand helmets may seem appealing, you don’t know if they’ve been damaged. If their effectiveness is compromised, so is your safety. It’s just not worth the risk.
FALSE! Chin straps have a purpose. There are different fasteners so test which you’re most comfortable with. ALWAYS have them done up and adjust slightly if they feel uncomfortable. It should be no looser than two-fingers’ space.
TRUE! Placing a bike helmet down on its side, i.e. the bit that’ll be working the hardest in the event of collision, could cause minor damage. Always carefully place the helmet down on the flat side where your head fits through.
FALSE! If we hadn’t made it clear already, you’re expected to wear a well-fitting helmet at ALL TIMES while riding in the UK. If you don’t, you could face a fine of £30 if the police catch you flaunting the rules. The only exception is for those of the Sikh faith who wear turbans. No one else.

and upgrades including a lightened stronger frame as requested directly from race teams, lightened suspension and vastly improved technology. It’s thought that the bike will be available with the far lighter and more efficient Bosche 9ME Plus ABS system which delivers improved combined antilock braking with traction control, anti-wheelie, and Motorcycle Stability Control. These alterations bring the new bike back into the forefront of
superbike technology and are thought to have made the bike around 5% lighter. In terms of design, the sleek new redesigned fairing exposes more of the frame giving the bike sharper, more aggressive lines and detailing, all of which will be aiding aerodynamics. The bike is expected to be unveiled at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany in October 2016, and the track ready version shortly after.
