Christmas came early for the Norwich Lanes when we were announced as winners of this year’s Great British High Street Award. The surprise of that announcement (particularly as when the judges came to visit, there seemed to be a torrential downpour so it wasn’t exactly the most welcoming kind of morning!) meant plenty a cork was popped on the eve of the news.

As the fresh Winter frost gathers on the rooftops and our coffee shops keep up cosy, we look to the year that past’. New neighbours have become new friends bringing hope for the continuing vibrancy of our community. We rediscovered Jack Valentine back in February and enjoyed an even bigger Summer Fayre this year in July thanks to support from Norwich Business Improvement District (BID).

As we look to 2015 there are plans in place for greater collaboration with our members, more events and press activity to increase the number of tourists that visit our beloved Lanes. New doors are opening every day. From all of us in the Norwich Lanes we wish you all of our thanks for the year past and all of our best for the year to come…

WELCOME TO THE NORWICH LANES

GREAT BRITISH HIGH STREET OF THE YEAR

On November 7th 2014, it was announced by the Department for Communities and Local Government, that the Norwich Lanes had won the city category in the Great British High Street of the Year Awards. Here we take a look at how and why we won, what it means for the area and the city as a whole.

The story starts in September when our main sponsor, the Norwich Business Improvement District (BID), called the Norwich Lanes Association into a meeting to give us word of a new national high street competition and to tell us they would like to nominate the Lanes. A pot of tea later and some ticking of boxes, it was quickly decided to give it a go.

Following a successful nomination and taking a good look at the impressive opposition, it was decided the best way to get shortlisted for this prestigious award was to take our campaign to social media to influence the judges online. In true Lanes fashion, we took the #GBHighSt hashtag and made it our very own, all with a little help from our influential friends.

boutiques and smaller stores. Glasgow Style Mile is often referred to as a ‘Shoppers Paradise’ packed to the brim with the biggest brands, major retailers and independent boutiques. A high calibre of competition indeed.

Later that month the judges came and went after a stroll in the Lanes and a chat to a few of the shopkeepers on their way. Then on November 7th, we got the call. The Norwich Lanes had won the city category in the Great British High Street of the Year Awards! Cue the popping of corks.

So where does this leave the Norwich Lanes and the city as a whole? The award has brought in unprecedented media coverage both nationally and internationally and also once again, it helps Norwich to maintain its position as one of the top ten shopping destinations in the UK.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID

The judges were impressed with the leadership exhibited by Norwich Lanes Association, describing them as a team of media savvy business leaders, who are working in partnership with traders and Norwich BID to develop a strong brand, organising a series of innovative events and marketing campaigns. The enthusiasm and passion of the volunteer ambassadors, prolific throughout the town, was another reason why the judges chose Norwich Lanes as the winner in this category.

The Lanes Association demonstrated real innovation is in the use of digital tools, one example being Droplet, a mobile payment service allowing people to buy goods using their smartphone – giving a much needed boost to small traders.

In early October it was announced that the Norwich Lanes had been shortlisted for an award alongside Park Street Bristol and the Glasgow Style Mile. Park Street Bristol is a traditional high street, with international brands sharing spaces with eclectic

All in all, a job well done. It just goes to prove what a bit of collaboration between a few small businesses can achieve. It also provides clear evidence, that there is life in the independent retailers yet. Taking on global brands, national chain stores and beating them at their own game.

Last but by no means least, we’d like to thank you all for your continual support and congratulate everyone in the Norwich Lanes. They say that variety is the spice of life and we have it by the bucket load.

The judges were also delighted to see how Norwich Lanes had adopted and promoted the #GBHighSt branding – demonstrating the real passion behind this entry.

George Plunkett

(1913 –

2006) devoted most of his adult life photographing street scenes in Norwich, the ever-changing architecture and civic ceremonies.

As a tribute to George, we have chosen just a few of his wonderful images of the Norwich Lanes, which show the dramatic changes of life in the twentieth century.

Today, thousands of George’s photographs can be found on a website dedicated to his extraordinary work. For more information and to view other images, visit www.georgeplunkett.co.uk

Barista Recommends

“My festive coffee picks would be the Aricha Natural Process Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or the Rocko Mountain Reserve. Once the coffee beans are picked, they are left to dry in the sun with the fruit still attached. This gives a far fruitier flavour than most washed coffees. With notes of red fruit, hints of blueberry and rich chocolate laced with alcohol, these are perfect Christmas blends.”

– Alex Sergeant, Strangers Coffee House.

The Coffee Beans Alex recommends are £8.50 for 250g.

Jarrold – The Deli

For anyone that has visited The Deli at Jarrold, you would agree that it’s a treasure trove of delicious delights. Here we highlight some of our must haves for the festive period, whether it’s for gift giving or a little treat for yourself.

Just mix 1 part syrup with 8 parts wine, (adding more or less to taste), gently heat allowing the amazing spicy aroma to infuse the air and let the party begin!

norfolk at the Pictures

Did you know that there used to be more than one cinema in the Norwich Lanes area?

In fact in Norwich alone, there have been over a dozen cinema venues since the invention of Moving Pictures in the 1890s.

Cinema City’s education charity Cinema Plus are busy researching the history of these buildings and the Norfolk people who worked in and visited them for a Heritage Lottery Funded project called Norfolk at the Pictures.

The project is part of a new development at Cinema City to create an education space and exhibition area (The Screen Heritage Centre), where visitors will be able to learn about and enjoy their local cinema history and heritage. The Centre will display some of the best photographs and stories from those that are currently being collected. The project will also be creating a map of cinema sites in Great Yarmouth and Norwich so you can visit some of the sites of these buildings yourself.

Anyone can get involved in the project by submitting their own memories of the buildings or the films they watched in them or by donating programmes, posters and photographs. The best pictures and stories will be featured in a magazine, documentary film and the Screen Heritage Centre at the end of the project. There are also a series of special screening events at Cinema City celebrating innovative and memorable films from the last century of cinema-going. Look out for these in the Cinema City brochure.

Cinema City

St Andrews Street, 1978

Cinema City is a thriving cultural cinema venue within a beautiful and historic medieval hall. Alongside showing films the cinema also runs education projects, school events and has a successful restaurant/bar attached. Films have been shown here since its restoration aided by the Colman Family in the late 1920s. Cinema City was established in 1978 as a Regional Film Theatre, part of a government initiative to expand the work of the National Film Theatre in London (originally the B.F.I. Southbank)

Theatre De Luxe

St Andrew’s Broad Street, circa 1910

1910 saw the arrival of the Theatre De Luxe (Pronounced locally as the Theatre-de-loo!) to St. Andrews Street, established by Electric Theatres, this was the first purpose-built cinema building, and it also brought with it the practice of saying “cinema”, rather than “cinematograph”. After its initial success, it was expanded in 1920 to accommodate the growing cinema audiences

in the city. The last to convert to talking films in 1931, it was however the first to screen 3 dimensional films. Cinema screenings stopped around 1957, and the building was demolished in 1970.

The Hippodrome

St Giles, 1903-1960

This cinema and theatre was officially opened in 1903 as the Grand Opera House before changing its name to ‘The Hippodrome’ several years later. Located in St Giles, it initially showed live performances. The Hippodrome officially opened as a picture-house in 1930 and functioned as a cinema for the next seven years until it stopped screening films and reverted to putting on stage shows. It became a cinema once again in the late 1950s but this was short-lived, and it closed in 1960 and was demolished.

There’s been an abundance of activity bubbling behind the scenes at SHhhh. With moving into a new studio space, a new collection due to launch and exciting collaborations in the works we are set to surf into 2015 on a positive vibe!

Unit 15 / SHhhh x Kinsu Bags

We recently moved into a new shared studio space ’Unit 15’ where we now work alongside a stimulating cluster of creative talent. Moving here has been a real game changer for us and has presented a new perspective and a more productive workflow. Although our practises and products are contrasting, that simple itch to create and progress bonds us together. Unit 15 houses ourselves, artist Harry Newman (@Nukof), artist Anmar Mirza, photographer Emily Jane Morgan and Kiran Harper founder / designer at Kinsu. Over the past few weeks we have been working on a collaborative duffle bag with Kinsu. After undergoing vast fabric research and testing we decided to make the bags from a high performance waxed British cotton. Each bag will be hand made right here in Norwich and these will be available to buy early next year via both www.shhhh.co.uk and www.kinsu.co.uk

THE WINGMAN NORWICH

Our friend, Ninnie Lear, recently launched The Wingman– Norwich’s finest crispy succulent chicken wings; twice cooked, coated with the ‘Wingman’ Korean sweet, spicy sauce, topped with chilli and spring onions. Their debut pop up event was huge success. Ninnie and his team smashed it! Look out for more wingman wonders at the birdcage New Years Eve party. New Collection / “New Yarns For a New Year”

We’re always looking for ways to develop our products so we can bring you unique items that look good, wash well, and last longer. In a world filled with consumerism in which so much of the product is designed to break and be replaced, we believe its important to challenge this and not become a contributor to these inconsiderate wasteful ways. Our new collection is better cut, pre-washed and made with a heavier cotton built for longevity. We’ll be introducing our new range of bamboo/cotton blend t-shirts and a range of premium organic cotton t-shirts that have a much softer feel and minimal design. Let us introduce you to the new line up:

Bamboo

As well as being a great material for construction, medicine and many other uses (found a bamboo bong at a bamboo river house in Thailand once) it’s also a great sustainable textile. Fast-growing with no need for pesticides or fertilisers and with environmental credentials far outweighing cotton we believe Bamboo to be quite simply, very dope.

It feels soft as silk and benefits from kind-to-skin properties. Perfect for those with sensitive skin, it

keeps you warm in the cold and cool in the sun. Not only this but bacteria doesn’t live well in this fabric. So it doesn’t hold odour even after several days, unlike synthetic fabrics and cotton. The unique properties of bamboo clothing make it perfect for an incredibly wide range of activities, great for the gym, skating etc.

Organic Fair Trade Cotton

We have been using organic cotton and fair trade garments for many years so this is nothing new. However this season welcomes a whole new quality of t-shirt. Our new organic t-shirt range have been put through an enzyme wash treatment for a super soft finish.

Recycled

This collection also welcomes our new recycled polyester t-shirts. They are made from 50% organic cotton / 50% recycled post consumer polyester. In a nutshell…turning plastic bottles into something you can wear.

SHhhh is an exhibition on garments and these are our new canvasses for the art. The collection will be hitting the Dogfish shelves on Saturday 20th December.

Collection Launch / Party

To celebrate the launch of our new collection we are hosting a pop up shop and Christmas party at the Birdcage on Saturday 20th December. As well as showing the new collection we thought it would be a nice opportunity to showcase and sell the work of our friends and creatives that have collaborated with us other the years. So alongside the clothing expect to see art, prints, zines and other artisan items from a diverse cluster of local creatives. A perfect chance to pick up unique gifts and last minute stocking fillers.

The shop opens at 11am and closes at 7pm. Following this will be the SHhhh Christmas party and the collective DJ’s will be digging out the grooves for a festive boogie ‘til midnight.

DECK THE HALLS

2014 has seen for the first time a consistent run of exhibitions at THE BIRDCAGE. The pub has two designated areas for art; the corridor known as The Bridge which changes monthly and the events space known as The Ballroom where the walls are the canvas.

Working directly with artists, either commissioning new work specific to the space or presenting existing work, the priority is to expand the public reach of emerging talent. Being at the very heart of the Norwich Lanes enables us to continuously provide opportunities for artists and collectives to be visible.

To conclude the year they invited all the artists who have exhibited at The Bridge & The Ballroom in 2014 to produce festive-themed pieces, which you can see here. In addition these works have been made in to a set of 12 Christmas cards which are available to purchase from the bar at The Birdcage. All profits made from sales will be donated to The Big C: Norfolk’s Cancer Charity via the fundraising of one courageous lady Oa Mackdonald. Like many others she is on a tough journey but despite that still has the strength to support others. A true inspiration.

Now they’re coming to the Norwich Lanes to play OPEN and present their 9th studio album, ‘Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance’ which blends electro-glide, baroque balladry and giantsized Europop hooks. Unique, unpredictable and fiercely loved, tickets for this gig are in high demand.

Lanes B&B Makes The Telegraph

It was great news for 38 St Giles in November as the Telegraph deemed the Boutique B&B as one of the four best hotels for Christmas shopping in the UK. Praised for being ‘friendly and well run’, the Telegraph highlighted the location of the guesthouse with its closeness to 10 different Christmas markets, the independent department store Jarrold and ‘medieval lanes for independent shops’. Not only that, 38 St Giles are celebrating being one of the few B&Bs listed in the Michelin Guide 2015.

Norwich Arts Centre: Britain’s Best Small Venue

Huge congratulations go to the Norwich Arts Centre as they were crowned Britain’s Best Small Venue 2014 by NME.

The 290 capacity venue, situated in a renovated church in the Norwich Lanes, beat competition from 10 other venues on the shortlist for this year’s award. Speaking to NME about the venue’s victory, venue director Pasco-Q Kevlin said: “As a venue it’s something that the city loves. Artists love it too, because it’s intimate. The stage is almost half the floor space, so it’s a real upfront experience for an audience and for a band. It’s a bit belt-and-braces, but it’s special”.

Hoskins Hair

Say hello to Hoskins Hair, now open on St Giles Street. A destination for the creative community, where individualism flourishes and independents thrive, Hoskins fits right in as a concept salon, opened by Jamie Hoskins, an established London stylist.
