Sam Green & yMusic Hofesh Shechter Company The Measure of All Things Political Mother A new live-cinema performance from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green, who narrates his latest documentary live on stage, accompanied by New York-based classical ensemble yMusic. Loosely inspired by the Guinness Book of Records this project weaves together a series of portraits of record-breaking people, places and things to create a poignant meditation on fate, time, and the outer contours of the human experience.

.. TARAF DE HA I DOUKS

Hofesh Shechter presents his critically acclaimed work Political Mother, that brims with emotional and gritty complexity. Pulsating live music, extraordinary ensemble sequences and cinematic editing make Political Mother a dance experience like no other.

“Part dance show, part heavy-rock gig, Hofesh Shechter's first ever full-length work is an audio-visual marvel”

The multi-award winning acknowledged master of psychological illusion is back on tour in 2015 with a brand new one-man show, Derren Brown: Miracle. Having confessed that performing live on stage gives him the greatest pleasure, Derren is, once again, looking forward to the challenge that comes with being acknowledged as one of the world’s most renowned live performers; a dark manipulator of magic and mind control. This will be Derren’s seventh show since 2003. Since then he has toured every year and been watched by an estimated audience of over one and a half million people. He has won two prestigious Olivier Awards, for SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (2006) and SVENGALI (2012). His last show, INFAMOUS, was universally acclaimed by critics and audience alike. We’re proud to be one of the few theatres in Britain hosting David Hare’s THE ABSENCE OF WAR in the leadup to the 2015 General Election. Let me put it in context. Tolstoy said that there are only two stories in the world: a wo/man goes on a journey, and a stranger comes to town. War and Peace is both. But modern stories have an extra element, particularly in a world whose furthest extremities are only a click away, where international horrors and dangers seem to loom over us every minute. This extra element is politics – how the elected representatives of the people shape the way we live our lives – how they protect us, tax us, educate and infuriate us, and how every so often we get to vote on the expertise and direction of the work they do on our behalf. I don’t think there has ever been a time in my life when British politics were so febrile, so uncertain. Even – perhaps especially - at times of national tension in the past, issues have been clear on both sides, and there have in general only been two sides. But the landscape now is more confused, with paths leading off in more than two directions on any number of issues. Only one aspect of our current political world is more definite than in the past, and that’s that we know the date of the next General Election. This has a single major ramification that has never applied before in the domestic context. The political parties should be able to shape their manifestos with greater consideration, taking more care over the content and the style of delivery, which means that by the time the public gets to read these documents they should – should – be more watertight, more focussed, better tested and with a greater understanding of consequences than has been possible in the hectic whirl of the old three-week election cycle.

That whirl comes under forensic scrutiny in David Hare’s great play THE ABSENCE OF WAR, the third part of a trilogy examining the institutions of the United Kingdom that he wrote for the National Theatre (the others being RACING DEMON, about the Church of England, and MURMURING JUDGES, about the legal profession). In THE ABSENCE OF WAR David writes forensically about internal political machinations during an election campaign, taking his cue from Shakespeare’s history plays by placing individuals, their weaknesses and ambitions carefully in a political landscape. The play is funny, personal, shockingly frank about political ruthlessness, and realistic in its assessment of both the imperfection and longevity of institutions. The company presenting THE ABSENCE OF WAR is Headlong, until recently led by Rupert Goold, whose production of ENRON was such a huge success in 2009. Headlong, which also produced 1984 and CHIMERICA in the West End, is now led by Jeremy Herrin, whose latest productions are the RSC’s internationally acclaimed WOLF HALL and BRING UP THE BODIES in the West End, shortly to be on Broadway. This is a distinguished company with a declared ambition to address current issues. I don’t think I’ve ever written at such length about a single production, and I do it now because the chance to see THE ABSENCE OF WAR, a play about a fictional General Election, in the runup to an actual General Election, may never come again. As ever, if you have any comments about anything at the Theatre Royal, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive

Education

Education “The education department provide a first class service with the staff, children and parents recognised and valued.” Teacher As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal regards education as central to its function, as shown by our charitable objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the production of educational plays and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music and to formulate, prepare and establish schemes therefore.” These pages give an indication of the range and scale of that education work.

“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 17th year this biannual project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with professional musicians which leads to a performance on stage at Theatre Royal.

THEATRE ACCESS PROJECT We’ve produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the ongoing Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project has been developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities. The film acts as a guide for teachers to show schoolchildren what a trip to Norwich Theatre Royal will be like and how to behave whilst there. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the DVD. Alternatively, you can view/download the 6 minute film, directly from our website.

“I found it inspiring and hope that you are involved in future school activities” Pupil BACKSTAGE TOURS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the technical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A tour can also be followed by a talk about other areas of the theatre’s operation, such as its history, marketing, customer care and careers.
