Set during World War II, the story is seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and devastating consequences. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel takes him from innocence to revelation, revealing the poetic irony that through a child’s eye everyone can appear the same.

The Hot Sardines + John Etheridge

Abdullah ibrahim

Riotous Romanian folk from the world’s greatest gypsy group. The clattering virtuosity and passionate gypsy rasp will steal your breath away.

The Hot Sardines have a distinctive recipe for making musical magic: take a blustery brass line-up, layer it over a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein and tie the whole thing together with a front woman who has the style of a 30s cabaret diva and a voice from another era – oh and don’t forget the tap dancer! The Sardine sound is steeped in hot jazz and gypsy swing – a slice of between-the-wars Paris via New Orleans and New York – transformed into living and breathing music for this century.

Charismatic South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim plays a special concert that celebrates his 80th year, bringing together echoes of the township jazz he grew up with, a stunning solo piano set, and the lustrous colours of a brand new trio. There’s nothing in music quite like the atmosphere of an Abdullah Ibrahim concert – a riveting live performer, weaving his own atmospheric spell of heart-stopping melody and delicately propulsive grooves.

Thursday 8 - Friday 9 October The 3 Dancers, and other works Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired Picasso’s masterpiece, The Three Dancers. Rambert springs Picasso’s painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life his vivid Cubist imagery. Didy Veldman’s The 3 Dancers, with orchestral music by Elena Kats-Chernin, forms the centrepiece of Rambert’s programme for Norwich. The triple bill also features Terra Incognita, created by ground-breaking dancemaker Shobana Jeyasingh. Set to Gabriel Prokofiev’s driving score, Rambert’s dancers journey to unknown lands in an atmospheric piece that evokes the sense of mystery that inspired ancient sea-farers. The programme is completed by Frames, choreographed by British dance’s hottest property Alexander Whitley. Dissecting the process of making theatre, dancers skilfully animate metal structures that grow, transform and combine to create a stage within a stage. Packed with thought-provoking drama, sumptuous live music and world-class dancing, this is Britain’s national dance company at its most captivating. Friday’s Insight matinee features an introduction by Mark Baldwin (Rambert’s Artistic Director), and performances of The 3 Dancers and Terra Incognita.

Don Pasquale, photo: Donald Cooper

‘A Christmas cracker by a star company’ Sunday Express

Tuesday 17 - Saturday 21 November Don’t miss Glyndebourne’s return to Norwich Theatre Royal with three diverse operas, stunning costumes and imaginative productions, all underpinned with breathtaking music and performances from the next generation of opera stars. Tues 17 (7.15pm) & Thur 19 (2pm) Donizetti’s Don Pasquale Sung in Italian with English supertitles This vivacious comedy is about an old bachelor flattered into seeking a younger wife in the hope of taking revenge upon his nephew. The story is brought to life with opulent period staging and joyful music. A revival of Mariame Clément’s ‘handsome and clever’ (Daily Telegraph) production. Wed 18 & Sat 21 (7.15pm) Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail Sung in German with English supertitles The fiancé of a young Spanish noblewoman, in the clutches of a Turkish despot, sets out to rescue her. The opera’s East/West clash and its surprising resolution defies all stereotypes and strikes a startlingly contemporary chord. Fri 20 (7.15pm) Handel’s Saul Sung in English with English supertitles An evening of massive choruses as well as magnificent solo singing. Saul, the first King of Israel, crumbles before our eyes as he watches with increasing despair, the young hero David winning everyone’s heart – including that of his own son. Uncle Drosselmeyer’s curious box of performing toys captivates the children and adults alike, but it is the wooden Nutcracker doll that enchants young Clara most. Share in Clara’s adventures as she is swept away by her Nutcracker Prince into a magical winter wonderland of dancing snowflakes and the famous Sugar Plum Fairy. Performed to Tchaikovsky’s enduring score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, David Nixon’s The Nutcracker has everything you’d expect from this traditional favourite. For those of us who want the Theatre Royal to be an even stronger, more secure, more vibrant and more confident home for high quality touring productions, the immediate future looks as rosy as any time I can remember. Here’s why. The Theatre Royal has for many years been an active and leading member of the Touring Partnership. The TP is a loose consortium of independent theatres that share programming ambitions. It comprises the Theatres Royal in Newcastle, Norwich, Nottingham and Plymouth, the Festival and Kings Theatres in Edinburgh, the Crucible and Lyceum Theatres in Sheffield, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, the Lowry Theatre in Manchester, and more recently Curve in Leicester. Although musicals have for the last thirty or so years been the staple of all our programmes, woman and man cannot live by song and dance alone. We were formed to fill, by co-producing collaboratively, perceived gaps in the regional provision of large-scale classic drama and lyric productions. Over the years since our inception in 1993, the TP has materially supported the work of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Edward Hall’s Propeller companies, and has encouraged best practice in every aspect of theatre management. It’s a proud record, and one that looks set to continue with increased vigour thanks to active encouragement from the new senior teams at the National and the RSC. Both Rufus Norris (NT) and Catherine Mallion (RSC) have been open to discussions as to how their productions can be brought to a wider audience than can travel to London or Stratford.

Then there’s the question of money. You may know that there have been a couple of excellent reports recently pointing out that the regions outside the M25 have been for many years getting less than their fair share of national arts funding. So Adrian Vinken, Chair of the TP, and I as vice-Chair, and our TP colleagues have written to our local prospective parliamentary candidates in the forthcoming General Election, asking them to support a Select Committee recommendation that significant funding should be diverted towards the regions. So far we’ve had assurances from Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem candidates that they’re willing to consider making a manifesto commitment to fairer distribution, especially of massive Lottery funds. This is what we want: more money for more high quality productions to come to Norwich. And it looks – fingers crossed – as though we may get it. As always, if you have any comments about the Theatre Royal, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive

Education

Education “The education department provide a first class service with the staff, children and parents recognised and valued.” Teacher As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal regards education as central to its function, as shown by our charitable objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the production of educational plays and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music and to formulate, prepare and establish schemes therefore.” These pages give an indication of the range and scale of that education work.

“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 17th year this biannual project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with professional musicians which leads to a performance on stage at Theatre Royal.

THEATRE ACCESS PROJECT We’ve produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the ongoing Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project has been developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities. The film acts as a guide for teachers to show schoolchildren what a trip to Norwich Theatre Royal will be like and how to behave whilst there. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the DVD. Alternatively, you can view/download the 6 minute film, directly from our website.

“I found it inspiring and hope that you are involved in future school activities” Pupil BACKSTAGE TOURS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the technical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A tour can also be followed by a talk about other areas of the theatre’s operation, such as its history, marketing, customer care and careers.
