With daughter Laura returned from Africa, widowed but not alone, they prepare for the latest social gathering. Rodney Ackland, who adapted the play from a short story by Somerset Maugham, has recently seen a huge resurgence in the popularity of his work, which is much admired by such artists as Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and originally Dame Edith Evans and Sir John Gielgud. Tom Conti is one of the most respected and celebrated actors of his generation. Unforgettable as the leading man in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and Shirley Valentine, he has also appeared as myriad characters on Friends & Corporate Club: screen and stage. He was recently voted Most Popular Actor in the Half price first night West End alongside Dame Judi Dench.

Thursday 8 - Friday 9 October The 3 Dancers, and other works Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired Picasso’s masterpiece, The Three Dancers. Rambert springs Picasso’s painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life his vivid Cubist imagery. Didy Veldman’s The 3 Dancers, with music by Elena Kats-Chernin, forms the centrepiece of this enthralling triple bill of dance. The programme also features Terra Incognita, created by Shobana Jeyasingh. Set to Gabriel Prokofiev’s driving score, Rambert’s dancers journey to unknown lands in an atmospheric piece that evokes the sense of mystery that inspired ancient sea-farers. Completing the line-up is Frames, choreographed by Alexander Whitley. 12 performers skilfully manipulate 70 interlocking metal bars, forming shapes, structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing in a different light. Packed with thought-provoking drama, superb live music and world-class dancing, this is Britain’s national dance company at its most captivating. Friday’s Insight matinee features an introduction by Mark Baldwin (Rambert’s Artistic Director), and performances of The 3 Dancers and Terra Incognita. Eves 7.30pm, Mat Fri 1.30pm

The plot revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. When young screenwriter Joe Gillis accidentally crosses her path, she sees in him an opportunity to make her comeback to the big screen. “You used to be in pictures – you used to be big?” Joe Gillis asks, to which Norma responds, “I am big… it’s the pictures that got small!”. Their subsequent passionate and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion.

“The company has barely looked on more optimistic form” Guardian
Thursday 4 - Friday 5 February Fresh from celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Richard Alston Dance Company leaps into its third decade with characteristic panache, and a programme of works bearing the Alston hallmarks of musicality and sculptural grace. Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance, creator of Theatre Royal favourites Madcap and Burning, brings his latest work Gambit. Made to an explosive percussive score by Julia Wolfe, Gambit sees all ten dancers leap, turn and light up the stage.
Monday 1 - Tuesday 2 February The World Premiere of a brand new musical. ‘The Hoff’, iconic star of BAYWATCH and KNIGHT RIDER, plays an extrovert, party-going DJ and night club owner in Ibiza. His teenage daughter arrives to stay for the summer and he has to cope with being a single parent to a girl who wants to meet boys and live the party life. Suddenly his motto is “do as I say, not as I did!” Underscoring this coming of age tale of love, laughter and friendship are a string of hits from the epic collection LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE from record number one Everything I Do I Do it For You to MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This to Ride on Time, back to a Saturday Night when Things Can Only Get Better, and The Only Way Was Up. Girls wanted to Spice Up Their Life and friends promised I’ll Be There For You. We dare you not to dance! From the makers of Dreamboats and Petticoats and Boogie Nights comes a heart-warming and hilarious story promising to be the party night of the year!
“Gambit is a cracker… the energy is so high you barely draw breath until it’s over” Guardian Alston’s newest work Mazur is a tribute to the music of Chopin, particularly his Mazurkas, in which he expressed his longing for his Polish homeland. Mazur received a 5 star review in the Financial Times on its premiere in London.
“The evening was given wings by Mazur… a fascinating, echoing in the memory work” Financial Times Brisk Singing celebrates the music of Jean Phillippe Rameau, genius of the French baroque. Alston has revived this uplifting dance for 8 dancers, carried along by the warmth and lightness of spirit in Rameau’s music.
“Alston’s response to the helium-buoyed rhythms of Rameau’s Les Boréades of 1764 is all joy.” Independent on Sunday

THE SNOW MAIDEN
THE NUTCRACKER
The Snow Maiden
GISELLE
The Russian State Ballet of Siberia The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet Thursday 18 – Saturday 20 February The acclaimed ballet company return to Norwich following their sell-out season earlier this year Giselle, Thursday 18 February at 7.30pm The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score. The Snow Maiden, Friday 19 February at 2.30pm & 7.30pm Based on a traditional folk-tale, set in the snow covered landscape of rural Russia, this seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. When finally she surrenders herself completely and warms to love, her heart melts in a tragic embrace. The Nutcracker, Saturday 20 February at 2.30pm & 7.30pm This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. When midnight strikes we are swept away to a fairy-tale world where nothing is quite as it seems, toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king and his mouse-army battle with the Nutcracker Prince and we travel through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins... The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, the prince ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule? Directed by the Almeida Theatre’s artistic director Rupert Goold, this ‘bracingly provocative and outrageously entertaining new play’ (The Independent) explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain's most famous family. Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 May When The James Plays premiered in Autumn 2014, the critical and public impact was extraordinary. Described by The Telegraph as ‘better than Shakespeare’ and ‘Rona Munro's thrilling trilogy could be the finest history plays ever penned’ The James Plays sold out their run at the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre in London. Now returning for a high-profile UK and international tour, these plays represent theatre-making at its very best. Please note the trilogy is only available to book as a complete whole.
By Rona Munro Directed by Laurie Sansom Exhilarating and vividly imagined, The James Plays bring to life three generations of Stewart kings who ruled Scotland from 1406 - 1488.

Prisoner of England for 18 years, James is delivered back to his homeland, with an English bride, to reign as James I of Scotland. Returning to a troubled nation, he faces terrible choices if he is to save himself, his Queen and the crown.

All being well, we’re going to build an Education, Skills and Training Centre just behind the Theatre Royal. It will have a mission: to be the muscle that will offer the work of the Theatre Royal to thousands of people, especially the young, raising their ambitions, enthusing them to participate in the world of performance, training them to cooperate and collaborate, influencing their attitudes to the world beyond Norfolk, and expanding their mental landscape. It will work through David Lambert’s Arts Courses, through the doubling of Jason Raper’s and Victoria Abraham’s education team, through our special relationship with Hellesdon High School and Arden Grove Infant & Nursery School, through the Norfolk Schools Project, through the Theatre Access Project, generously sponsored by Norse, and through projects, schemes, initiatives and activities that we haven’t even thought of yet. It will complement the brilliant work with young people already being done at and by The Garage, enabling people of every age to take the fullest possible advantage of the possibilities of both performance and skills training. It will bring world-class expertise to unlock creativity, innovation, leadership, communication and confidence in businesses across Norfolk. And above all it will be the visible symbol of the Theatre Royal’s commitment to place its stability, vision, commercial skills, wide reach, artistic integrity and energies at the service of its charitable function to improve the worlds in which it operates by focussing on placing the arts within reach of every child. We have asked our Trustees to trust that the team who transformed the Theatre Royal in time for its 250th birthday will deliver the same high standards, and that this project will also come in on time and on budget.

We have received generous contributions from many local and national Trusts, and from some individuals and businesses. So we’ve already raised a substantial sum towards the Centre, and at some point this autumn will be asking for public support from individuals who share our passion for a better future. The plans for the Centre will be on our website shortly, but if you want to see the actual site itself, you’ll only have to look behind the Theatre Royal, to the site on Chantry Road where the dilapidated schoolroom of the Chapel that used to be on Chapelfield once stood. The building has been gradually falling to pieces for many years, and though it would have been marvellous to have used it in some fashion, the needs of the Centre are so specific that it would have severely hampered our ambitions. We hope to start work this summer and finish in good time for the autumn term at the end of 2016. If you want to know more, please write to me. And, as always, if there’s anything about the Theatre Royal that you’d like to criticise, praise or question, just let me know. Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive

Education
Education “The education department provide a first class service with the staff, children and parents recognised and valued.” Teacher As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal regards education as central to its function, as shown by our charitable objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the production of educational plays and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music and to formulate, prepare and establish schemes therefore.” These pages give an indication of the range and scale of that education work.
“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 17th year this biannual project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with professional musicians which leads to a performance on stage at Theatre Royal.
THEATRE ACCESS PROJECT We’ve produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the ongoing Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project has been developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities. The film acts as a guide for teachers to show schoolchildren what a trip to Norwich Theatre Royal will be like and how to behave whilst there. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the DVD. Alternatively, you can view/download the 6 minute film, directly from our website.
“I found it inspiring and hope that you are involved in future school activities” Pupil BACKSTAGE TOURS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the technical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A tour can also be followed by a talk about other areas of the theatre’s operation, such as its history, marketing, customer care and careers.
