Friday 8 - Saturday 9 April English National Ballet and English National Ballet School present My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty, an enchanting version of the fairy tale ballet created especially for children aged three upwards. As a baby, Princess Aurora is cursed by the evil Carabosse: on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Her godmother the Lilac Fairy alters the spell so Aurora will not die but will sleep for 100 years, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss. From Aurora’s christening in the grand hall of the palace, to her jubilant wedding celebrations, the popular fairy tale comes alive on stage. With a narrator to help the young audience follow the story, and a shortened version of Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous music, this is the perfect introduction to the beauty of ballet, and a fantastic family day out. This unique collaboration between English National Ballet and English National Ballet schools is created by English National Ballet’s Associate Artist George Williamson and performed by second year students from English National Ballet School. Since its creation in 2012, 150,000 people have enjoyed our My First Ballet series.

Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 May Described by The Telegraph as ‘better than Shakespeare’ The James Plays are a modern trilogy of history plays bringing to life three generations of Stewart kings who ruled Scotland from 1406 - 1488. Each play stands alone in its own right, but viewed together they form a very special, truly epic piece of theatre created by an ensemble of 20 actors including Blythe Duff (Taggart) and Steven Miller (Casualty). The language is contemporary, the action fast-moving and the narrative compelling and urgent. You can either book for the whole trilogy or for the individual plays. Monumental, rich and utterly riveting, this is historical drama for a contemporary audience. Gripping writing, royal power battles and a world-class cast and production make this event theatre as addictive as any box set.

LISA FISCHER

MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR By equal parts a musical showpiece and a creative sonic experiment, The Analogues take their name from their dedication to recreating the complex and layered sound of The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, playing the same instruments that the Fab Four used to record the album at Abbey Road Studios. Sidestepping all digital effects, songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever, Across the Universe and All You Need is Love, as well as other gems from the band’s catalogue, are supported by beautiful vintage instruments and managed by as many technicians as musicians on stage recreating music which The Beatles themselves never performed live.

Hailed as the most influential composer of his generation, British electro-acoustic artist Max Richter is inspired equally by Bach, punk rock and ambient electronica. Richter’s sonic world blends a formal classical training with modern technology, with work including scores for the award-winning films Waltz with Bashir and Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.

The star of the Oscar-winning Twenty Feet From Stardom, Lisa Fischer is best-known as the woman who sings her heart out with the Rolling Stones – the YouTube of her Gimme Shelter duet with Mick Jagger has had millions of hits. This is her first UK concert in her own right – as the Huffington Post said “she is deeply in love with the act of singing, utterly and blissfully present in the welling-up of each note, in the zone of the sublime”.

£199 per night Thursday 9 – Saturday 11 June Written by Carol Harrison A trans-generational musical experience celebrating the unique sound of the iconic Mod band, THE SMALL FACES. Including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, All Or Nothing, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes The Nice and Itchycoo Park. In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded on to the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. THE SMALL FACES encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed, and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion: their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues.

THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE ROCK N ROLL MUSICAL DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER LUSCOMBE

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”

Following the global cinema and TV release of the LIVE West End broadcast which hit No1 in the UK Box office charts, this new 2016 tour of Richard O’Brien’s classic continues to smash records in theatres across the country.

As the Bennet sisters haplessly search for love in Jane Austen’s ultimate romantic comedy, it is Mr Darcy who unwittingly finds his match. A sell-out during its original run at Regent’s Park Theatre, creators of the recent smash-hit To Kill a Mockingbird “it’s Austen…still dazzling after 200 years” (Observer).

Bursting at the seams with timeless classics, including Sweet Transvestite, Damn it Janet, and of course, the pelvic-thrusting Time Warp, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show is a non-stop party!

Tuesday 22 - Saturday 26 November With two of the world’s most beloved operas and an enlightening introduction to this unique art form, this is a season not to be missed. Tues 22 & Fri 25 (7.15pm)

Mozart’s Don Giovanni Sung in Italian with English supertitles Don Giovanni swings restlessly between comedy and tragedy to startling effect. Mozart’s irresistible music follows suit, its famous highlights ranging from Don Giovanni’s sparkling Champagne aria to the seductive duet ‘Là ci darem la mano’. Jonathan Kent’s sleek and suspenseful production, last seen here in 2010, captures this duality brilliantly. Wed 23 & Sat 26 (7.15pm) Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly Derived from a true story of a Japanese geisha married and abandoned by an American sailor, Puccini’s popular masterwork unfolds as a disastrous clash of East and West. In Glyndebourne’s first-ever production of Madama Butterfly, director Annilese Miskimmon delves deep into the humanity of the ill-fated Cio-Cio San and the American naval officer who marries her. This is Italian opera at its melodious and moving best.

Monday 14 - Saturday 19 November Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and so memorably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the iconic 1961 film, is being given a new lease of life as a stage play with music in a sparkling, sophisticated production starring Georgia May Foote (Runner-up - Strictly Come Dancing, Coronation Street) as Holly. This is vocational training for people with some prior experience of musical theatre, which will enable them to learn at a faster pace. Concentrating on process and development, it will nurture your versatility as an actor and singer and prepare you to take your next steps towards more extensive professional training, hone your existing skills more finely, or simply give you a deeper understanding and increased enjoyment of musical theatre. Course Deviser: Tim Welton Tim studied Languages at Durham University before training at RADA. He subsequently acted for a number of years before concentrating on directing. He has been associate director on

the West End and touring productions of Sleeping Beauty (Barbican Theatre and New York), Tintin (Playhouse Theatre) as well as Cabaret with Will Young (Lyric Theatre, Savoy Theatre and National Tour) and the award-winning London Road (National Theatre). More recently he was resident director for Bill Kenwright Limited working on, amongst others, the West End and touring productions of Blood Brothers, Evita, Dreamboats and Petticoats and The Pitmen Painters. Sun 7 – Sat 13 Aug 2016 Course fee: £350 Accommodation and refreshments not included. Will include one or two evening sessions. Participants must be aged 17 or over. To book, call the Theatre Royal Box Office on (01603) 63 00 00, or visit theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk/stagetwo.

TECHNICAL THEATRE SUMMER SCHOOL All participants will receive an introduction to and orientation in the theatrical disciplines of lighting, sound and stage management over six days. Working alongside theatre professionals you will gain hands-on experience through exploring each area both practically and theoretically. You will then be able to put your skills into practice by choosing a specialism to work within on the Musical Theatre Masterclass performance. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to see how the dark side of theatre works, whether you want to polish your skills further or just gain an insight into technical theatre. The course aims to accommodate and tailor the content to suit your level of experience, knowledge and interest.

Current & recent credits include: SPILL 2012, Arts Admin: Pilot Festival, SPILL 2014, A Midsummer Night's Dream (Lakeside Theatre, Outdoors). Film: On Landguard Point (London 2012 Cultural Olympiad). Nikk is never happier than when she is introducing people to the amazing possibilities of what can be achieved technically on a stage. Sun 7 – Sat 13 Aug 2016 Course fee: £350 Accommodation and refreshments not included. May include one or two evening sessions. Participants must be aged 17 or over. To book, call the Theatre Royal Box Office on (01603) 63 00 00, or visit theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk/stagetwo.

Welcome to the Theatre Royal May 2016 brings to Norfolk a pair of special productions jointly sponsored and presented by ourselves and the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. I give them prominence because they lie outside both of our normal spheres of activity and so deserve special mention.

We know that Norfolk’s audiences are ambitious for the best.

Here at the Theatre Royal we will be presenting, over the weekend of May 14 and 15, two complete cycles of the mighty JAMES PLAYS. Co-produced by the National Theatre of Scotland, the English National Theatre and the Edinburgh International Festival, the JAMES trilogy is heading off for a year-long world tour after playing a small handful of UK dates.

Early reports from their opening in Edinburgh in February suggest that everyone who books for THE JAMES PLAYS is in for a theatrical treat that will test and reward in equal measure.

We are privileged to be one of them. Together with our colleagues in the Touring Partnership we decided that this spectacularly original and ambitious production was a theatrical event that would resound for many years, and we would be craven to pass it up. Personally I’m proud that we have taken the risk, as it is always tempting to depend on the kinds of production that we know will sell tickets more easily. William Galinsky, the indefatigable Director of the NNF, will be directing THE TEMPEST, Shakespeare’s great romance about rage, revenge, self-discovery and peace. He’s persuaded Tony Guilfoyle, one of Robert le Page’s regular actors, to play Prospero, and has engaged the designer of the National Theatre of Scotland’s ‘Black Watch’ as his creative collaborator. The venue for William’s production is Peter Jay’s magnificent Hippodrome Circus in Yarmouth, not only an atmospheric marvel but also the only surviving total circus auditorium in the world, with its remarkable and unique water tanks into which the stage can – and will, I’m sure – sink.

Photo: Garlinda Birkbeck

Brochure 72 (01.03.2016).qxp_Layout 1 10/03/2016 16:32 Page 57

So I hope that you will consider these two productions with care.

And though William’s TEMPEST is still in the planning stage, those of us who have watched the Festival’s growing engagement with the unusual and the quirky – especially in unusual venues - are sure that it will be a special evening. On another front STAGE TWO, our new learning and participation centre, is taking its considerable shape behind the Theatre Royal and will be handed over to us by Carters in June, ready to be fitted out and open properly in time for the academic year. You can find out more details about what we hope to achieve on our website. This is a good opportunity for me to thank all those who have contributed to STAGE TWO, on whatever level, and to encourage those who may have delayed their contributions to help us to bridge the financial gap that we have promised to cover within five years. Please help if you can. As always, if you have any observations, comments, criticism or praise for anything at the Theatre Royal, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. Peter Wilson MBE DL Chief Executive

Education

Education “The education department provide a first class service with the staff, children and parents recognised and valued.” Teacher As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal regards education as central to its function, as shown by our charitable objects: “To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the production of educational plays and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music and to formulate, prepare and establish schemes therefore.” These pages give an indication of the range and scale of that education work.

“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher THE NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 17th year this biannual project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with professional musicians which leads to a performance on stage at Theatre Royal.

THEATRE ACCESS PROJECT We’ve produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the ongoing Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project has been developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities. The film acts as a guide for teachers to show schoolchildren what a trip to Norwich Theatre Royal will be like and how to behave whilst there. Please contact us if you would like to receive a copy of the DVD. Alternatively, you can view/download the 6 minute film, directly from our website.

“I found it inspiring and hope that you are involved in future school activities” Pupil BACKSTAGE TOURS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the technical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A tour can also be followed by a talk about other areas of the theatre’s operation, such as its history, marketing, customer care and careers.
