“Forget Strictly - come see these wonderful dancers in exhilarating form.” Herald (on the premiere of Tangent) September 2016 Chacony, Alston’s newest dance, is inspired by the powerful Chaconne of Henry Purcell. Every bit as powerful but much more stringent is the Chacony from Britten’s String Quartet No. 2, conceived as an overt tribute to Purcell. Alston juxtaposes these two pieces to make a dance that gets under the skin of the richness and nobility of Purcell, reaching into darker places before reaffirming hope for humanity. NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT Now in its 19th year, this project aims to break down the barriers associated with the arts and theatre in general, and opera and dance in particular. Free music workshops are offered to both teachers with music skills and to non-music specialists. Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with theatre professionals which leads to a musical performance on stage at the Theatre Royal.

The Theatre Royal is an Arts Award Supporter. Attending our performances, or participating in our courses and activities, could contribute towards your Arts Award.Head to the ‘Take Part’ tab on our website where you will find Discover, Explore and Bronze log books which can be completed in your own time or whilst taking part in fun, engaging activities at the theatre.

THANK YOU!” Teacher FILM GUIDE We produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project was developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre, to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities.

ADVICE AND SUPPORT Career talks and advice for individual students of Drama, Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, Education Studies, from GCSE to postgraduate level, who wish to complement their studies with professional support.

WORK EXPERIENCE Week-long placements can be arranged for students with an evident, active interest in theatre. We recommend that you allow a minimum of 8 weeks for your application, prior to your chosen date. Details of how to apply can be found on the education pages of the theatre website. To date, over 950 young people have participated in week long work experience placements at Norwich Theatre Royal, both in our Front of House and Backstage/Technical departments. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Organised activities in conjunction with visiting companies, such as Matthew Bourne, Northern Ballet, National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Rambert and Richard Alston Dance Company. Resource packs for teachers, Page to Stage events, exhibitions, pre/post show discussions and company meet and greets are among the activities widely available to visiting groups and often open to individuals too. WORKSHOPS and EVENTS Offered to schools and other community groups to explore the practical side of theatre and can be tailored to suit your needs. A workshop can take place in-school, in a hired studio or sometimes on stage.

Showing friends, supporters, funders, politicians and anyone else who’s expressed an interest in STAGE TWO around the building itself has reminded me that nothing happens without individual effort. The initial impetus to bring the Arts Courses back into our orbit started with David Lambert and his team. The pressure on our other educational work to find spaces that could be used to accommodate school visits and the burgeoning work of that department was created by Jason Raper and Victoria Jenkins. In senior management we had the inspirational idea that the derelict building opposite the stage door occupied a space that could be utilised to give our learning and participation work an extra great muscle. Trustees examined the project from every angle, including several that I hadn’t anticipated, and finally gave consent. Alan Hepburn and Jon Nelson, our friends from the 2007 refurbishment, guided us through the whole project, executed by RG Carter. Other departments have played their parts. Jane Claridge has tirelessly guided the whole project with strong support from Will Hill and Ian Greeves and our brilliant technical team. Charles Landry, who created the concept of the creative city, points to Norwich as the paradigm of a place that punches above its weight. It’s compact enough to react to a few inspired individuals; big enough to make a difference; far enough away from London to have its own identity; close enough to be part of the bigger picture. The same could be said about the Theatre Royal. It’s not so big that it can only take the huge shows; nor so small that it can’t pay its way; it feeds from the national touring supply and has enough confidence to take a leading part in – for instance – the Touring Partnership, in discussions with the RSC, Glyndebourne and the National. And in combination with STAGE TWO and the Playhouse, for which it has managerial responsibility, it represents a unique force in Norwich, Norfolk, East Anglia and the United Kingdom. The Box Office is open from 9.30am-8.00pm Mon to Sat. On non-performance days the Box Office closes at 6.00pm.

Generally, we will reserve tickets without payment for five working days, or up to 40 minutes before curtain up, whichever is sooner. If uncollected they will be released for resale. Where few tickets remain available for a performance, full payment may be required sooner.

Driving eco-friendly cars within their fleet. Blue Badge parking is available opposite the theatre in Theatre Street and a drop-off layby can be accessed to the right of the doors on Theatre Street. Coaches and Minibuses can park at Lower Clarence Road situated behind the Norwich railway station and Harford Park & Ride, situated on the A140 Ipswich Road and A47 junction. LATECOMERS Latecomers will be seated at a suitable point in the performance which will be designated by the visiting production company. TV monitors will relay the show to areas of the foyers.

CHILDREN For certain shows, babies and children under 3 are welcome free of charge and may share a seat with you. For shows which do not display this advice, we regret children under 3 are not admitted to the auditorium. For Ben & Holly and Milkshake! Live children under 1 are welcome free of charge and may share a seat with you. There are baby changing facilities available in toilets on all floors. A children’s menu and high-chairs are available in the restaurant.

GROUPS Ice creams and interval drinks may be ordered in advance if bringing a group. Order forms will be sent to you when your booking is confirmed.

THEATRE TOURS Theatre tours with backstage visits are available. These must be booked in advance with the Education Manager on (01603) 598623.

SAFETY AND SECURITY The Theatre Royal premises are monitored by CCTV. The Theatre Royal reserves the right to remove anyone creating a disturbance, whatever the cause.
