I owe a great debt of gratitude to my predecessor, Peter Wilson, whose passion for this theatre and this place means that I take on the leadership of an organisation that is firmly rooted within both Norwich and Norfolk, and is also an integral part of the UK’s cultural landscape, with a phenomenal range of artistic partners who have made Norwich one of their regional homes. I am hugely enjoying meeting our loyal and dedicated audiences and what is clear to me is that you expect a programme characterised by both high quality and wide range - I could not agree with you more! Within this new season we are delighted to feature productions ranging from Shirley Valentine to Hedda Gabler, and from Glyndebourne to our much-loved Theatre Royal pantomime.
I am particularly thrilled that we are staging our first ever International Classical Concert series, with three orchestras coming to perform on our stage, and our first ever Dementia Friendly performance with the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company.

I am delighted to at last be in Norwich and it is a pleasure to welcome you to my first full season as Chief Executive.
Familiar artists and companies such as the National Theatre, who will bring no less than three productions to Norwich in 2017, culminating with the acclaimed Hedda Gabler in November, have pride of place in this season alongside new artists, new performances and some very special events.

Welcome to the Theatre Royal We are also delighted to have an additional visit from English Touring Opera with a new two-part production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare. And, as part of our partnership with Norfolk & Norwich Festival, we have a week of world-class performance spanning music, contemporary circus and dance, including a return to Norwich for Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson, who have chosen Norwich Theatre Royal as the only venue outside London on their UK tour. Away from the main stage, we are also continuing to develop and expand our work in Stage Two, our new Learning & Participation centre. I am passionately committed to our work with schools and local community groups and I look forward to sharing more of this valuable work with you over the coming years. Thanks to the fantastic team at Theatre Royal and to all of you for the warm welcome that I have been given here. I am so excited about the years that lie ahead for this wonderful theatre. All best wishes, Stephen Crocker Chief Executive

Consumed by his desires, Casanova lived every minute in a whirlwind of scandal and excess. But there’s more to the man. This original ballet will expose a story so sensational you won’t believe it’s real. This spine-tingling spectacle of 18th century decadence will flood your senses and take your breath away. "The most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter" Daily Telegraph. Continuing its record breaking run at the Fortune Theatre in London’s West End, The Woman in Black returns to Norwich Theatre Royal as part of a major national tour. Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This gripping production, directed by Robin Herford, is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled Friends & Corporate horror. Club: Half price first night A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds.

Tuesday 25 – Saturday 29 April For Lilly, going to Indonesia isn’t just another holiday with mum. It’s a new start, and the chance to ride an elephant called Oona. But then the tsunami hits – and Oona charges into the jungle, with her young rider desperately clinging on. Directed by Timothy Sheader and Dale Rooks with puppetry design and direction by Finn Caldwell and Toby Olié, both previous Associate Puppetry Directors on War Horse, this epic and spectacular production tells an emotional and moving story of love, loss, loyalty and of living for the moment.

It weaves together a playful story of a boy who dreams of becoming a dancer, and of a mythical child who angers the forest gods by collecting their forbidden honey.
DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER
American Style
A fantastic live performer, Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of today’s leading female jazz vocal stars. A Grammy and Tony Award-winning artist, producer and UN Ambassador, Dee Dee Bridgewater counts Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon among her list of past collaborators. She will be performing songs from her new album Memphis; offering ground-breaking reimaginings of American blues and R&B classics
+ Bill Laurance (Snarky Puppy)
Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson have collaborated through the years on various live and recording projects. They have only recently come together to create a new evening. First performed in 2015, the evening has grown and developed into a unique piece of art. Trading songs and improvising, Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson approach the work with a loose and inventive feel, blending to create entirely new music. American Style is the empathetic resonance of two very different styles finding one musical language. It is a collaboration with the ghostly and majestic spoken performances and words of their dear friends Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen among others. Laurie Anderson’s visual work punctuates the evening.
Developed from Akram Khan’s Olivier Award-winning autobiographical show DESH, this is a show that can be enjoyed by everyone aged 7+.

Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 September Written by Willy Russell, the legendary BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Eves 7.30pm, Mats Wed, Thur & Sat 2.30pm

‘The audience loves Beautiful’ (Daily Mail) and critics agree! Called ‘slick and beautifully played’ (The Times), the ‘amazing story of the songwriting talents of Carole King told through laughter and tears’ (BBC Radio 2), critics are celebrating this ‘tapestry of greatest hits’ (The Guardian). Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman, Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might As Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and Locomotion. Tues 17 Oct Part 2: Cleopatra’s Needle
One of the greatest heroic operas ever written, Handel’s Giulio Cesare is a thrilling story of passion and revenge in the midst of bitter power struggles over the succession to Egypt’s throne.
Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (O’Neal) wrote his first letter to Melissa Gardner (MacGraw) to tell her she looked like a lost princess; they were both seven years old. For the next fifty years, through personal triumphs and despair, through wars and marriages and children and careers, they poured out their heartfelt secrets to each other. They defied a fate that schemed to keep them apart, and lived for the one most meaningful thing, their undying love for each other.

Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece, Ghost Dances, is possibly the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death – in the form of the iconic “ghost dancers” – interrupts the daily lives of a series of ordinary people. Created as a response to political oppression in South America, it uses imagery from the Day of the Dead Friends & Corporate and bewitching traditional music to create a moving, intensely human Club: Bands A & B £7.50 work. A new work by Andonis Foniadakis, Artistic Director of Greek National Opera Ballet, completes a programme showcasing the dynamism and virtuosity of Britain’s national dance company. Monday 27 November - Saturday 2 December Following its critically acclaimed West End revival at the Haymarket, London’s funniest comedy of 2016 embarks on a national tour. Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair but their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery, with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, after which the future of all three couples seems in jeopardy… The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor ROBERT DAWS (The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger) opposite CAROLINE LANGRISHE (Lovejoy, Holby City and Judge John Deed), MATTHEW COTTLE (BAFTA-nominated Game On) who transfers direct from the West End production, and SARA CROWE, (West End credits include Absurd Person Singular and The Constant Wife, and on the big screen Four Weddings and a Funeral). Linked specifically to music at Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum in terms of Listening, Composing and Appraising, workshops are followed by a programme of activity involving residential work in schools with theatre professionals which leads to a musical performance on stage at the Theatre Royal.
The Theatre Royal is an Arts Award Supporter. Attending our performances, or participating in our courses and activities, could contribute towards your Arts Award. Head to the ‘Take Part’ tab on our website where you will find Discover, Explore and Bronze log books which can be completed in your own time, or join our Arts Awards Club on Thursdays at 4pm. Details on website.
“This project has made a seemingly inaccessible art form a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the children. THANK YOU!” Teacher FILM GUIDE We produced a film ‘How to behave at the theatre’ as part of the Theatre Access Project (T.A.P), a partnership between Norwich Theatre Royal and Norse Group. The project was developed to encourage primary schools who do not normally visit the theatre, to see a production and take advantage of the accompanying educational opportunities.
