Welcome to the Theatre Royal It has never been more important for the arts to remain international in their outlook, so I am delighted to introduce to you a new season at Theatre Royal with a particularly international flavour. We are hugely excited to be welcoming global dance superstar Carlos Acosta to Norwich for the very first time in 2018. I am delighted that Carlos will bring his new company Acosta Danza, made up of young dancers from his native Cuba, to Norwich and even more thrilled that he will also be dancing alongside them. This will be a very special moment for Theatre Royal, for Norwich and for Norfolk. More international contemporary dance comes from our partnership with Norfolk & Norwich Festival and the return of internationally-acclaimed Hofesh Shechter’s company with his latest work, Grand Finale. The Festival line-up at Theatre Royal also features other fantastic international artists Ladysmith Black Mambazo from South Africa and alternative-rock singer-songwriter Ben Folds from America. Comedy features strongly this season as well, with visits from Stewart Lee, Jon Richardson, David Baddiel, Danny Baker and Ross Noble who will all provide food for thought as well as plenty of laughs. Other not-to-be-missed performers are Derren Brown, who returns with his Greatest Hits show and the wonderful Sheridan Smith, one of the country’s finest female

actors and musical performers, here for one night as part of a limited tour. For families, we have the thrilling Cirque Berserk and a new production of The Jungle Book from the Children’s Touring Partnership, makers of Running Wild and Goodnight Mister Tom. We can also now unveil that next year’s Pantomime will be Aladdin. In other parts of our programme, we’re offering more opportunities to local young people with our Youth Theatre Company’s production of the hugely popular musical Grease and the return of English Youth Ballet with an innovative take on Cinderella, which will provide amazing opportunities for younger ballet dancers. In Stage Two, following the success of our first Creative Matters season in September, our next season in January focuses on men’s mental health in partnership with Norfolk County Council, with a mix of performance, film, workshops and discussion. It’s a critically important issue and we hope to be able to engage a wide range of people in an environment of discussion, exploration and support. Stephen Crocker Chief Executive

A world stage premiere from the pen of one of the world’s greatest thriller writers.

Following the sold-out and critical success of The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty, New Adventures return to Norwich Theatre Royal with one of their most popular and beloved productions, Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella – a thrilling and evocative love story set in London during the Second World War.

When Sandor snatched little Joe from the path of a London tube train, he was quick to make clear the terms of the rescue. “I saved your life”, he told the homeless youngster, “so your life belongs to me now”. Sandor began to tell him a fairy tale: an ageing prince, a kidnapped princess, a missed rendezvous... But what did this mysterious story have to do with Sandor? Joe only understood his own role - he was a Gallowglass, the servant of a chief...

CILLA - THE MUSICAL is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, by BAFTA award winner, Jeff Pope (Philomena, Little Boy Blue).

LIVERPOOL ECHO

BILL KENWRIGHT & LAURIE MANSFIELD PRESENT

The story follows the extraordinary life of the ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White, and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the ’60s, including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had A Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, The Beatles’ Twist And Shout, California Dreamin’ by The Mamas And The Papas, and many more.

KARA LILY HAYWORTH plays Cilla. Following weeks of open auditions countrywide, Kara fought off thousands of hopefuls to be cast as Cilla in the first ever musical about the star’s life. Executive Producer and Cilla’s son, Robert Willis, said of Kara: “I knew she was the one my mum would have wanted!”. In the role of Brian Epstein is TV and stage favourite ANDREW LANCEL, best known for his portrayal of Frank Foster in Coronation Street.

WITH US YOUR PROPERTY AND BUSINESS TAKE CENTRE STAGE

Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End this extraordinarily prescient play takes on a new importance in the current political climate. Are we in the midst of a political revolution? Can the country stay united? Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs. Directed by Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall), This House gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics. Eves 7.30pm, Mat Thur & Sat 2.30pm a) £28.50

GRAND FINALE

After the success of Political Mother at the Festival in 2015, we are delighted to welcome back internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter with his latest work, Grand Finale, a spectacularly bold and ambitious new piece featuring 10 dancers and six musicians. Grand Finale is at once comic, bleak and beautiful, evoking a world at odds with itself, full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. Filtering this irrepressible spirit, Shechter creates a vision of a world in freefall: part gig, part dance, part theatre and wholly original

“I was sure about sending my daughter from the day we went to visit. She just got stuck in and loved it – there’s always such a good atmosphere.” “My daughter actively relishes every day and can’t stop talking about all the things she has learned.”

Friday 25 - Saturday 26 May Set in the glamorous era of 1950s Hollywood movies, this lavish production draws its inspiration from the film star Grace Kelly who met Prince Rainier of Monaco at a press party and later married him. Cinderella is a seamstress on a film set and the Fairy Godmother is her late mother - a former movie star of the 1930s. Her wicked sisters are Hollywood starlets competing with each other for starring film roles. The Prince meets Cinderella at the press party but at midnight she flees from the scene leaving a sparkly silver pointe-shoe as the only clue to her identity. The music unusually combines Shostakovich jazz suites with tunes from Hollywood films Tea for Two, Chinatown and Dancing in the Dark. This promises to be a dazzling production with stunningly striking costumes and wonderful dancing, with international principals in the leading roles.
