One of the joys of theatre is to be able to reflect contemporary issues in a cultural context. This is at the core of one of the flagship performances in this new season as we become one of the first venues to present 10 Soldiers. Created by Rosie Kay, the choreographer uses intense and athletic dance theatre to depict how the human body is very much on the frontline of conflict. We are able to bring this to the Theatre Royal as part of our growing national and international reputation as a venue for Dance and it’s wonderful to feature it here alongside the previously-announced Pepperland, from the New York-based Mark Morris Dance Group, which pays tribute to the Beatles’ iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

Still with the contemporary, Homelessness comes into sharp focus in our next Creative Matters season, our month-long programme of work which aims to explore issues creatively in a safe space. The full programme of work is still being developed, but we are delighted that this will include a newly-commissioned play based on the real experiences of homeless people in Norwich and Norfolk. We have plenty of great drama lined up as the acclaimed Regent’s Park Open-Air Theatre production of To Kill a Mockingbird returns to us. The Critics' Choice of six national newspapers, the production also entranced audiences and brought Harper Lee’s story memorably to life. Some spectacular staging is promised when The Girl On The Train, a modern-day Hitchcockian-style suspense thriller that is already a hit novel and movie, comes to us. That other great theatrical
hit The Mousetrap is also heading back to us and Theatre Royal Bath production of the Noel Coward play A Song at Twilight will see the fantastic pairing of stage and screen legends Jane Asher and Simon Callow. We are also very excited to offer plenty in the new season for younger people with Horrible Histories, The Worst Witch and Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom are all part of our new programme and will offer an introduction to live performance for many. We are delighted to announce that our Pantomime for Christmas 2019 will be Cinderella although, if you haven’t got your tickets for Aladdin 2018, don’t miss out. At Theatre Royal we have a profound belief in inspiring a sense of magic in all those who see our performances and ensuring that everyone who comes here has a brilliant experience. That is what I am hoping all of our new season will provide and I look forward to welcoming you to share these experiences with us.

La Fille mal gardée Giselle Cinderella
Monday 14 – Wednesday 16 January 2019 Russia’s acclaimed ballet company returns to the UK for its 2019 Tour.
La Fille mal gardée
Mon 14 Jan 7.30pm One of the oldest ballets still regularly performed, with plenty of ribbons, romance and rivalry, La Fille mal gardée conjures up a world of pastoral simplicity where a farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s daughter and they find inventive ways to avoid her mother. A masterpiece of comedy.
Giselle
Tue 15 Jan 7.30pm The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score.
Cinderella
Wed 16 Jan 2.30pm & 7.30pm The world’s favourite rags to riches fairy-tale is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score, lively choreography and colourful costumes. Whilst her mad/bad stepmother and her ill-mannered daughters prepare for the Royal Ball, graceful Cinderella can only dream of dancing with the dashing Prince…

BRITTEN SINFONIA: ELDER CONDUCTS BRAHMS AND MAHLER
Britten Suite on English Folk Tunes Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Brahms Symphony No. 2 Sir Mark Elder conducts Brahms’s radiant and bucolic 2nd symphony, in the second year of an acclaimed four-year symphony cycle. The cycle borrows from the spirit of early performances of the works, by performing them with the musical forces that Brahms intended. The concert also traces a poetic line from Brahms’s symphonic Romanticism to more intimate evocations of poetry, love and nature in Mahler’s emotionally charged Songs for a Wayfarer, and Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes. "In Elder's hands and with Britten Sinfonia's relentlessly incisive tone, Brahms' much celebrated First Symphony sounded astonishingly fresh." BachTrack "The playing, with every solo line beautifully teased out and an instinctive sense of ensemble give and take, was exemplary throughout the evening." The Guardian

“War from a female perspective packs a punch taut, visceral, compassionate” The Observer
Tuesday 4 June Rosie Kay Dance Company Presented in Association with The British Army A thrilling and humane portrait of army life telling the stories of men and women serving on the front line. In 2008, choreographer Rosie Kay joined the 4th Battalion The Rifles, to watch and participate in full battle exercises, and visited the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. What came of these observations was the award-winning, five-star work 5 SOLDIERS. Ten years on, Rosie Kay expands the work for the large stage with 10 Soldiers. Now a full Army squad, 10 Soldiers takes a fresh look at life in 2019’s British Army including issues of equality and diversity. Charged with Kay’s trademark intense athletic dance theatre, 10 Soldiers explores how the human body - with both fragility and incredible inner strength - remains on the frontline of war.

KARL MINNS: SORTABIOGRAPHY
THE BIG CHRIS BARBER BAND - 70TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
Nimmo Twins writer and performer Karl Minns looks back at his life and asks some serious questions; how did I get here? Where am I going? What happened to all that hair? Find out as Karl takes you through stories, standup comedy, songs and an underwhelming Powerpoint presentation as he fruitlessly tries to make sense of the 47 years he’s spent bimbling around looking for meaning.
Celebrating an incredible 70-years as band-leader, Chris takes to the road alongside the Big Chris Barber Band - a band that he rates as the best of his career- for a Europe-wide concert tour. Inspired by the 'King Oliver Creole Jazz Band', Chris formed his first Band in 1949 at the age of nineteen and has since gone on to become not only Europe's most successful and influential bandleaders, but a bona fide jazz legend.
Comic and moving, expect stories about love, courage, death, despair, the kindness of strangers and an arrest for a crime he absolutely did not commit. Age 16+
The Big Chris Barber Band combine all these ingredients into an exciting, and often moving, evening of world-class jazz. A perfect Valentine’s evening.

Airborne uses a variety of movement based theatrical styles of work such as physical theatre, commedia, contemporary dance, clowning and martial arts. Combined with the use of music, digital art and spoken word, participants will have opportunities to create stunning performances. Some experience in at least one of the disciplines is necessary.

FOOD & DRINK
We’re a 20 minute walk from Norwich Railway Station (greateranglia.co.uk), and just a ten minute walk from Norwich Bus Station (travelineeastanglia.co.uk).
For a delicious pre-show supper or light lunch, Kemp's Restaurant serves a seasonally changing menu based on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Or one floor up, our Circle Bar offers freshlyprepared sandwiches before every performance, a lunchtime buffet before all our matinees, and a hot buffet before every evening show.
There are cycle racks outside and opposite the Theatre. If coming by car, our postcode for your Sat Nav is NR2 1RL. We recommend that you allow plenty of time to park if you’re coming to a performance. The nearest indoor car parks are The Forum and intu Chapelfield, and there are pay and display outdoor car parks nearby at Chantry Road, Assembly House and Chapelfield East. Blue Badge holders can park opposite the Theatre on Theatre Street; there’s a drop-off layby to the right of our main doors.
Priority on these seats is given to people with restricted mobility, using a wheelchair or transferring from one

Seats towards the ends of rows may have a restricted view. This is reflected in the price of these seats.
If you’re coming with a party, there is parking for coaches and minibuses on Lower Clarence Road behind Norwich Railway Station and at Harford Park & Ride. Minibuses can also park at surface car parks on Rouen Road and Chantry Road.
Our Adnams Bars stock a great selection of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks. You can enjoy a drink with us before the show, pre-order your interval drinks, or pop in for a drink whenever we’re open, whether or not you’re coming to a performance.
