IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Our ambitious new artistic strategy strengthens and gathers pace this season with self-assured new work, bold, invigorated revivals, and the fresh material of favourite established performers. Creativity, challenge and collaboration are at the heart of this season. One of the joys of theatre, for me, is that it is inherently current. Every performance is a new experience, and even the most classic text is open to fresh interpretation. So I applaud our national partners the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company for proving, once again, that Shakespeare’s great tragedies are not museum pieces, with Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet given dynamic new resonance. We also have powerful contemporary theatre in Still Alice, from the new-writing hot house of Leeds Playhouse; a classic chiller, The House on Cold Hill, from the pen of Peter James; and a revival of Tom Stoppard’s stylish comedy, Rough Crossing, starring Anthony Andrews. This season we are proud to present the work of leading contemporary dance artists from either side of the Atlantic - Mark Morris, one of the most influential choreographers in the world, and Richard Alston, here celebrating 50 years in dance. Rambert return with a captivating full-length work, and the brand new Rambert2 will follow the main company early next year, providing an exciting opportunity to witness emerging dance talent on our Playhouse stage.

New talent, new insights and new partnerships feed a healthy arts sector and inspire new audiences. It is therefore with huge excitement that we welcome Norwichbased theatre company Curious Directive back to Theatre Royal, following their extraordinary production, Frogman, at Stage 2 in April 2018. The world premiere of their new show Gastronomic, co-commissioned by us, promises to take us on a multi-media and culinary adventure! Our next Creative Matters season will, for the first time, see us showcase the work of Black and Minority Ethnic artists, in a series of events celebrating and exploring black British identity, and including a first ever visit to Norfolk by Cassa Pancho’s acclaimed Ballet Black, seeing Creative Matters expand to our main stage. Adventure happens every day at Theatre Royal with people of all ages exploring their creativity through our Learning and Participation work and many more children and young people being introduced to theatre through our Pantomime and family shows. Theatre Royal is a place for all - there are more ways than ever to get involved and there are always new things to try. It is our pleasure to put this season together for you.

An outstanding programme from one of the world’s most renowned period instrument orchestras and choirs presents three masterworks in praise of St Cecilia, Patron Saint of music. Henry Purcell’s delicious, limpid Ode of 1683 and Benjamin Britten’s brilliantly-crafted miniature of 1942 preface one of Handel’s greatest works, filled with magnificent choruses and solos, concluding with a paean of praise to music and harmony.

Britten Suite on English Folk Tunes Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Brahms Symphony No. 2 Sir Mark Elder conducts Brahms’s radiant and bucolic 2nd symphony, in the second year of an acclaimed four-year symphony cycle. The cycle borrows from the spirit of early performances of the works, by performing them with the musical forces that Brahms intended. The concert also traces a poetic line from Brahms’s symphonic Romanticism to more intimate evocations of poetry, love and nature in Mahler’s emotionally charged Songs for a Wayfarer, and Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes.

"In Elder's hands and with Britten Sinfonia's relentlessly incisive tone, Brahms' much celebrated First Symphony sounded astonishingly fresh." Thursday 25 October Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and grace in specially commissioned pieces. As part of their latest double bill, renowned British choreographer Cathy Marston choreographs a new ballet based on Can Themba’s moving fable The Suit. This is the first dance adaptation of the affecting short story. Completing the evening is Arthur Pita’s Olivier nominated A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The production mixes classical and contemporary to distil the essence of Shakespeare’s comedy, unfolding to the eclectic sounds of Eartha Kitt, Barbra Streisand, Yma Sumac and more. Age guidance: 12+ due to a scene in The Suit that is unsuitable for younger children and which some audience members may find upsetting, as it deals with suicide. The evening contains adult themes.

La Fille mal gardée Giselle Cinderella

Performed by The Russian State Ballet of Siberia Accompanied by The Orchestra of the Russian State Ballet Monday 14 – Wednesday 16 January 2019 Russia’s acclaimed ballet company returns to the UK for its 2019 Tour

La Fille mal gardée

Monday 14 January 7.30pm One of the oldest ballets still regularly performed, with plenty of ribbons, romance and rivalry, La Fille mal gardée conjures up a world of pastoral simplicity where a farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s daughter and they find inventive ways to avoid her mother. A masterpiece of comedy.

Giselle

Tuesday 15 January 7.30pm The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score.

Cinderella

Wednesday 16 January 2.30pm & 7.30pm The world’s favourite rags to riches fairy-tale is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score, lively choreography and colourful costumes. Whilst her mad/bad stepmother and her ill-mannered daughters prepare for the Royal Ball, graceful Cinderella can only dream of dancing with the dashing Prince…

Tuesday 22 - Saturday 26 January Following their tremendous success with Top Hat in January 2018, the Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society return with a brand new production of the magnificent Guys and Dolls. This Tony and Olivier award-winning musical comedy is set amidst the hustle and bustle of 1950s New York. The show follows larger than life characters as they sing, dance and bluff their way through a host of exploits. Professional gamblers, petty crooks, belligerent cops, earnest missionaries and enchanting dancers cavort through the colourful and vibrant New York underworld, as they pursue love and luck, from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba. With some of the best show tunes ever, including Luck Be a Lady Tonight, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat and I’ve Never Been In Love Before, it’s a sure bet that you will leave the theatre with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Friday 22 - Saturday 23 February Richard Alston has been making dance for 50 years and is recognised internationally as one of the most important dance-artists of our time. His Company returns to Norwich with a celebratory triple bill of his trademark, deeply lyrical choreography. In Alston’s newest work, Brahms Hungarian Dances, his dancers swoon with gypsy abandon, borne along by Johannes Brahms’s hugely popular music that inspired the dance. In contrast is the cool and serene Proverb (pictured), danced to music by Steve Reich. Alston has specially revived Proverb for the first time since it was created as a seventieth birthday present for Reich in 2006. Mid-Century Modern selects outstanding dances from Alston’s half century of creativity. From his earliest existing solo of 1970 to more recent works, these extracts beautifully demonstrate the development of an extraordinary talent, performed by one of the world’s finest dance ensembles.

THEY SAID THE DEAD CAN’T HURT YOU... THEY WERE WRONG

Monday 25 February – Saturday 2 March Remember the 80s? Hair was big. Shoulders were padded. Mobiles weighed a tonne. And the music was irresistible… Welcome to the Club Tropicana Hotel - the 1980s answer to Love Island, where the whole family is invited to a vibrant holiday musical. This nostalgic feel-good show features some of the most iconic, chart-topping pop anthems of the 80s, including The Look of Love, Fantasy Island, Relax, Take on Me, Church of the Poison Mind, Up Where We Belong and many more – all performed live on stage. When our budding bride and groom get cold feet, they decide to jet off to sunnier climes, but little do they know they’ve checked into the same hotel… Will our young lovers decide to go through with the wedding? Will the hotel inspectors finally get their way and close the resort, or will the staff save the day? All will be revealed in hilarious style, to an irresistible soundtrack!

Tuesday 2 - Saturday 6 April Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake returns with a fresh look for the 21st Century.

Monday 25 - Saturday 30 March BAFTA award-winning star of stage and screen, Anthony Andrews, leads the cast in one of Stoppard’s most hilarious and brilliant plays. Two famous but desperate playwrights are stuck on an Ocean liner headed for New York, feverishly trying to rehearse their latest show before reaching land, and opening night. But they are constantly distracted by their delicate composer’s attempts to end it all, having overheard his lover confess her feelings to the leading man. Add an absurdly unorthodox waiter, a mistimed lifeboat drill and a vanishing glass of brandy and soon the sharp Atlantic winds turn to world-class gales of laughter as these colourful characters become tangled up in a typically Stoppardian string of absurd events. Anthony Andrews is best known for his award-winning performance in Brideshead Revisited and for playing the title roles in Ivanhoe and The Scarlet Pimpernel.

The

Choreographer Mark Morris, hailed by the New York Times as ‘The most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical’, returns to Norwich with Pepperland, a unique tribute to the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Held at The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral, by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter

MUSIC THEATRE

A joyous new work that kicked off Liverpool’s season-long festivities in 2017, Pepperland features an original score by Ethan Iverson. Arrangements of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, With a Little Help From My Friends, A Day in the Life, Penny Lane and other tracks from the album are interspersed with original pieces, composed to complement Morris’ profound understanding of classical musical forms and the blues. A chamber music ensemble of voice, theremin, soprano sax, trombone, keyboards and percussion, teases out and elaborates on Sgt. Pepper’s non-rock and roll influences. Pepperland resounds with the ingenuity, musicality, wit, and humanity for which Mark Morris Dance Group is known, and the production is a riot of suitably psychedelic colour.

JULIAN CLARY - BORN TO MINCE

RICH HALL'S HOEDOWN

‘Are you ready for some filth? I know I am. It’s been a while since I sallied forth to pleasure the provinces with my particular brand of saucy innuendo. Let me at them!’

There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There’s ‘blissfully funny’ (The Guardian) - stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, sh*t-kicking good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe. Likely to be swearing and adult content. Age recommendation 14+

In this outrageously camp new show, Julian Clary will bare his soul as never before in the interests of light entertainment. He’ll murder some well-known songs, read you a sneak preview from his next memoir A Night At the Lubricant ,and make withering remarks about punters foolish enough to sit in the front row. You know the kind of thing. It’s the only life he knows. Don’t miss out. This might well be the final mince… 16 +

Creative Matters are a series of month-long activities, focusing on issues which affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Each Creative Matters season features a mix of performance, film, exhibitions, workshops, activities and events, which aims to stimulate discussion and make connections through creativity. Creative Matters 2018 features a series of events across our three venues that celebrate and explore what it means to be Black British today. These events are presented as part of, and supported by, Norwich Black History Month.

THE HEAD WRAP DIARIES Uchenna Dance Friday 5 October, 7.30pm Hair – long, short, wavy or in braids – is the subject of this funny and uplifting dance theatre show. Blending the club dance styles of House, Waacking and Vogue with African and contemporary dance, The Head Wrap Diaries explores community, heritage, womanhood, friendship, and most importantly, hair! Stylists Linda and Riyah take you on a journey that will have you laughing out loud, while thinking about your own (and everyone else’s) hair, all from the hairdresser’s chair. £12/£10

Post-show Head Wrap Bar An informal opportunity to meet the company, share experiences and try different ways of tying head wraps. Bring your own piece of fabric, or experiment with those provided; this is a fun opportunity to explore your personal style, create your own crown and maybe learn a new skill. Free for Head Wrap Diaries ticket holders

Friday 12 October, 8pm NELSON T GOMBAKOMBA JNR. AND GUESTS Norwich-based comedian Nelson T Gombakomba Jr. leads an evening of comedy, spoken word, music and debate celebrating Black consciousness. A comedy circuit favourite, who has performed at London’s Comedy Store and Top Secret Comedy Club, Nelson was also the runner up in the 2017 Piccadilly New Comedian of the Year competition. Age 18+ £10/£8 Thursday 18 October 2018 2.30pm BELLE (Film PG) This film is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay. Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife, Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin excludes her from participating fully in the traditions of her noble family. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar’s son who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice in the movement to end slavery in England. Released in 2013 and directed by Amma Asante, Belle stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the title role, with a cast including Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson and Penelope Wilton. Free, tickets required ROOTS AND CULTURE JAMES BELL This exhibition charts James Bell’s journey as a photographer investigating Afro Caribbean identity. A deeply personal project (Bell was born of Caribbean parents and grew up in foster care), the exhibition explores Britain’s relationship with West Africa and the Caribbean, alongside symbolism associated with the ‘Roots’ of Caribbean identity, and ongoing narratives of the African Diaspora. Drop in during all Creative Matters events. Free.
